Rock and roll hall of fame museum makes for an awesome ohio day trips activity.

If you are looking for an activity that is unique to Ohio, then consider heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

It is one of the most incredible things to do in Ohio because it is the only home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The museum is located in downtown Cleveland, right by Lake Erie.

Inside the massive 55,000 square foot building, you’ll find several levels of exhibits dedicated to the history of Rock and Roll.

The I.M. Pei-designed building also houses the offices of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s where the artists who are inducted every year are decided on.

You’ll also find souvenir shops and a cafe, which means you can easily spend the entire day exploring this super-unique museum in Ohio.

The Ohio Caverns are definitely one of the best hidden gems of the Midwest .

Depending on the time of the year, the caverns are open for tours at different times.

Ohio is home to several castles , and one of those is Chateau Laroche.

Chateau Laroche is often called Loveland Castle by locals, simply because you can find it in the town of Loveland, Ohio.

The Chateau is a full-size replica of a European castle and features a mishmash of different architectural styles from different European countries.

You will see influences from English, French, and German architectural styles as well as four turrets, each of which has a different style.

Visit The Pro Football Hall Of Fame In Canton

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton Ohio.

Inside, you’ll find tons of exhibits all relating to American football.

It’s no surprise that football fans travel from all over the world to spend the day exploring this really unique museum experience.

There are interactive exhibits and fascinating tours that teach you all about the history of football and some of its most iconic players.

Step Into History At The National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center

You can find the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

It is specifically located along the banks of the Ohio River because the Ohio River used to be a natural divider between ‘free’ and ‘slave’ states.

The ‘free’ states were those above the Ohio River and the ‘slave’ states were those below the Ohio River.

So it was naturally one of the best crossing points for enslaved peoples looking to escape.

Now you can learn about the history of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio at the center.

The center highlights stories of those who helped enslaved peoples escape to Ohio as well as the stories of those who managed to find freedom in Ohio.

It is an incredibly moving museum.

While we believe that slavery ended in America with the end of the Civil War, that is sadly not the case.

Slavery continues to occur every day in the form of human trafficking, even in America.

Alongside the exhibits about the Underground Rail Road, you’ll also find exhibits that highlight and inform visitors about the modern-day slave trade.

Admire The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves

The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves are an Ohio natural wonder on Kelleys Island.

It is an island just off the coast of Lake Erie near Sandusky.

Kelleys Island is super tiny and you can only reach it via ferry.

So keep that in mind when you are planning this Ohio day trip adventure.

To get around the island you will need to walk.

There are no cars permitted, but at only four miles by two miles, that probably will not be a problem.

You can see a few things on the tiny island, but the most popular is the glacial grooves.

The grooves were created by a glacier slowly sliding on the landscape and carving the grooves over time.

While you explore the park you’ll find gorgeous waterfalls , scenic hiking trails , and unique rock formations dotted throughout the lush forest landscape.

The area around the state park is also full of fun activities. There are shops, restaurants, and historic museums.

If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors for one of your next day trips in Ohio, then you can’t go wrong with a day spent at Hocking Hills State Park.

Explore Ashtabula Beaches And Parks

Ashtabula is an adorable small town, probably best known for its wonderful Lakeshore Park.

The Lakeshore Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie and is about 54 acres of trails, sandy shores, and park area.

What makes the park and the beaches of Ashtabula so popular are actually a few different things.

The beaches are very pretty, and Lakeshore Park is full of amenities.

There are grassy areas where you can picnic or relax and play some horseshoe, a playground for kids, volleyball courts, pavilions, and even a public boat dock.

You could easily spend an entire day in Ashtabula.

Westerville Is One Of The Cutest Small Towns In Ohio

If you are looking to explore one of the cutest small towns in Ohio , head to Westerville.

For those near Columbus, Westerville is just a short 20-minute drive away.

In the small town, you will find a great main street with unique shops and restaurants.

You can stroll through the Sharon Woods Metro Park or the Inniswood Metro Garden if you want to enjoy some beautiful small-town landscapes.

For those that are interested in history, Westerville is a cool place to visit.

A fun fact about the town is that it was called ‘The Dry Capital of the World’ because it continued the prohibition of alcohol long after the US rolled back prohibition laws.

While you are in town, history lovers should also make a stop at the historic Everal Barn and Homestead.

Ready to take a train trip from Toledo? Two Amtrak routes stop at the downtown station : Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited . Both travel to Chicago and the East Coast with stops along the way. To start planning your trip, here are best Amtrak trips that don’t involve middle-of-the-night travel. New York City and Boston did not make this list because of the train schedule, but are additional options to consider.

The home of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend is an easy day trip from Toledo on the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited. Trains depart early in the morning and travel time is only 2.5 hours. It’s a great option if you want to go to an afternoon football game or other event in the city. You can also visit the Studebaker National Museum , go to a show at the beautiful Morris Performing Arts Center , gamble at the Four Winds Casino , sample chocolate at the South Bend Chocolate Company , see animals at the zoo , or view the St. Joseph River via kayak, canoe, raft, bike or your own two feet.

The Capitol Limited is the better option for the return trip as you’ll arrive in Toledo before midnight. This option still gives you plenty of time to explore as you won’t need to head back to the train station until after dinner.

For a vacation full of great food, live music, museums and lake time, head to Chicago . You can book tickets on the Capitol Limited or the Lake Shore Limited; travel time is about 4.5 hours on both trains. It’s a morning arrival in the West Loop and you can walk from the station to downtown Chicago, several  CTA train stations  and a  water taxi  stop. With Lyft and Uber providing additional transportation options, you don’t need a rental car.

Consider planning your trip around one of the many  festivals and events , or visit top attractions including the  Art Institute of Chicago ,  360 Chicago Observation Deck ,  Millennium Park ,  Field Museum ,  Chicago Riverwalk ,  Navy Pier ,  Lakefront Trail ,  Magnificent Mile , and  Wrigley Field . You can return to Toledo on the same day — both trains depart Chicago in the evening, or stay a night or two to see more sights.

If you’re a night person, or fine with midnight train departures, then consider an Amtrak trip to Pittsburgh . The Capitol Limited departs from Toledo and from Pittsburgh around midnight, with a travel time of just over five hours. Roomettes and bedrooms are accommodation options if you don’t want to sleep in a coach seat.

Pittsburgh can be a day trip if you don’t want to stay the night. You’ll arrive around 5 a.m. and have about 18 hours to explore. The city has many museums , a historic botanical garden , zoo/aquarium and plenty of sporting events . For great views of the city, head to the Mount Washington neighborhood , which has skyline overlooks, restaurants and even a cable car .

For a mountain getaway , travel to Cumberland, Maryland on the the Capitol Limited train. You can hike or bike on the  Great Allegheny Passage ,  C&O Canal Towpath and in  Rocky Gap State Park . History fans will enjoy the  C&O Canal National Historical Park ,  Allegheny Museum  and the  Western Maryland Scenic Railroad . For golf, spa and casino, consider staying at the  Rocky Gap Casino Resort .

You can rent a car at the nearby  Enterprise  office — call ahead to arrange a pickup from the Amtrak station. You can also easily walk to downtown Cumberland after getting off the train, where you’ll find shops, restaurants , the Cumberland Railroad Museum and the Alleghany Museum.

Trip time is 9 hours and 45 minutes each way, but you’ll spend most of the time sleeping. The train arrives around 9 a.m. and returns to Toledo in the early evening, so you can technically make Cumberland a day trip. To see more sights, consider staying a night or two. The Ramada Cumberland Downtown is the closest hotel to the train station, and there are many other places to stay that are further away.

Harpers Ferry

Next to the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, Harpers Ferry is full of history and beautiful scenery. The town played an important role in the Civil War, and we recommend a certified guide tour to learn about all that’s happened here. The other must-do activities include visiting The Point (where the two rivers meet), Jefferson Rock and various hiking trails for beautiful river and mountain views. You’ll also find the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Headquarters nearby.

Travel time on the train is about 12 hours and you’ll arrive next to the Potomac River and restaurants and shops in the downtown area. Town’s Inn , Stonehouse Bed & Breakfast and The Ledge Bed & Breakfast are also in walking distance. Plan to stay at least one night.

Washington D.C.

With  free museums , stately  monuments ,  year-round events  and Potomac River cruises , there are many things to see and do in  Washington D.C.  The train trip from Toledo takes about 13 hours via the Capitol Limited, and you’ll spend one night on the train and arrive in the afternoon. Sleeper cars are available on this train, so you can reserve a roomette or bedroom for private sleeping accommodations.

Union Station  has a direct connection to the  WMATA Metro  red line, so you can easily get around without a car. Lyft, Uber and taxis are also available. Plan your trip in mid-March to view the cherry blossoms or in the fall for cooler weather and fewer tourists.

You’ll need to stay at least one night in Washington D.C. There are many hotels near the National Mall if you want to walk to museums. Other popular areas include Georgetown , Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom .

Where to watch the 2024 solar eclipse in Michigan: State, local parks to host parties

Across the state, millions are preparing for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse in southeast Michigan. Luna Pier in southern Monroe County is one of the only places in Michigan to reach totality. 

Now, you just need a spot to watch it. State parks, metroparks and national parks could be the perfect spot to catch the rare event.

Here's a list of parks near the path of totality or hosting a viewing party, that you may want to consider visiting to watch the eclipse.

Michigan state parks and Metroparks

Pass Required: $14 recreation passport

Sterling State Park in Monroe is hosting a viewing party in the beach parking lot from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will provide complimentary eclipse glasses, while supplies last. The park is expected to experience 99.8% of the solar eclipse at 3:13 p.m.

Erie State Game Area in Monroe County is expected to be among the state's top eclipse-viewing locations. The Monroe Co. Convention and Tourism Bureau and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host a viewing party at Dusseau Tract, at the corner of Dean and Bay Creek Roads. A map can be found here .

The Lake Hudson Recreation Area , near the Ohio border in Clayton, is expected to experience 99.4% coverage at 3:12 p.m. and is hosting a viewing party from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free solar eclipse glasses will be available while supplies last.

About an hour drive from Toledo, Ohio, in Huron, Erie Metroparks lies in the path of totality and will experience a total eclipse at each of its 13 parks . The visitor’s information desk at the Frost Center at Osborn MetroPark will have one pair of eclipse glasses for each guest while supplies last. Free entry.

Michigan national parks for eclipse viewing

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will host a viewing party at its iconic Dune Climb from noon to 4 p.m. The eclipse will start at 1:57 p.m., and reach maximum coverage at 86.7% at 3:11 p.m.

Park entrance passes are required and can be bought for $25 at the Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center, Dune Climb, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, and Homestead.

The River Raisin National Battlefield Park is hosting a free viewing party from noon to 5 p.m. with family activities in the Event Center from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
