About open studios.

Open Studios – Nevada County West is The Center for the Arts’ largest annual visual arts program which serves on average 200+ artists, in both urban and rural studios, with an estimated 5,000 attendees every year. This self-guided tour extends throughout western Nevada County every second and third weekend of October. In addition, The Center’s Granucci Gallery hosts a Preview Exhibition featuring one work from each participating artist, gallery or group studio. To attend the self-guided tour, use this guide and the Preview Exhibition to discover artists you’d like to visit and plan your route.

Nine open studios events to explore on weekends this fall

Nearly every weekend in October and November, artists open their doors in creative enclaves in and around Boston. Fans of fine art can browse paintings, sculptures, home goods, and jewelry, among other media, at the numerous Massachusetts-based open studio events. Some have artist demonstrations, live entertainment, and food.

Brookline Open Studios & Marketplace

Head to Monmouth Park, the Brookline Arts Center, and Station Street for this one-day open studios event, featuring more than 50 local artists whose work encompasses everything from paintings and drawings to ceramics and jewelry making. Enjoy live music from the John Payne Music Center and the Clark Page Project while browsing work from artists like sculptor Liliana Marquez, illustrator Gabrielle Maye, and abstract painter Harry Yu. Western Avenue Studios

Lowell-based Western Avenue Studios hosts a monthly open studios event at their 265,000-square foot facility, which houses some 370 artists in a five-building converted mill complex. They have a special two-day tour planned for October, when visitors will be able to browse new works, watch live demonstrations from the artists, and sample food from Phoenix Rising Pizza and Purple Carrot Bread Company, which will have food trucks outside. 122 and 160 Western Ave., Oct. 1, noon-5 p.m. westernavenuestudios.com

Backroads Studio Tour

In Central Mass., the Backroads Studio Tour features 11 artists and studios, including wood carver and silverpoint artist Abigail Rorer, and leather artist Sylvia Brown, both new to the event this year. The self-guided tour includes studios in Petersham, Barre, New Braintree, North Brookfield, and Spencer. A map of the route and participating studios is available at backroadsstudiotour.org . Roxbury Open Studios

The 23rd annual Roxbury Open Studios tour returns to the Dewitt Center for a two-day event, featuring a variety of original artwork from Roxbury-based artists. Visitors can shop for cards and prints from Afrocentric stationery designer Life’s Paper, and check out comics from illustrator Renford Reid Jr., in addition to browsing paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and other work. Cape Ann Artisans Tour

The North Shore’s 39th annual fall open studios tour features 15 artists throughout Gloucester and Rockport. Visitors can explore everything from fiber arts to paintings to mosaics from artists including Sara Wright, Rob Diebboll, and Pam Stratton during the two-day showcase. Fort Point Open Studios

Head to Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood in the Seaport District for the 42nd annual open studios event, with four organizations — Fort Point Arts Community Gallery, the Gallery at Atlantic Wharf, 249 A Street Artists Cooperative, and Midway Artist Studios — joining forces to feature work from more than 60 local and resident artists. In addition to seeing the work of mixed media artist Lisa Murphy, abstract painter Helen Lee, photographer Samuel Aikins, and many others, visitors can enjoy live music on all three nights. Friday night, Oct. 14, kicks off at the Fort Point Arts Community Gallery’s Assemblage Art Space with a performance from Gretchen Shae & the Middle Eight, with the Savtones playing on Saturday, Oct. 15. Cohasset Open Studios

Wander to any of 18 local artists’ studios in Cohasset’s artistic community at this two-day open studios event along Main Street and adjacent streets. Waltham Open Studios

Waltham Mills, Lincoln Studios, and Metalwerx host this two-day event highlighting more than 60 local artists and artisans. Melrose Open Studio Tour

The sixth annual open studio tour returns to Melrose this fall, with more than 40 artists, including painter and printmaker Kerry Pegoraro and jewelry maker Jenne Rayburn, welcoming the public for a day of community fun. Pop-up events with live demos will be held throughout November, and studios in at least 18 locations will open their doors. Nov. 19, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. melroseopenstudios.org

Moscow City Government Approves Construction of Universal Studios Moscow

Moscow, Russia (December 20, 2012) — Various Russian news agencies are reporting that the Moscow city government has approved construction of a Universal Studios theme park and resort to be built in the southern part of the city.  In April, 2012, Gazeta.ru, a Russian online newspaper, reported that Russian real estate development company BIN Group had announced development of a themed resort called “Galaktika Park,” which would include an indoor Universal Studios theme park.  The resort was projected to be 650-700,000 square meters, with 150,000 square meters being allocated to the park.  Estimated project cost was $2.8 billion, with $500 million going to the park.

The Gazeta.ru article stated that Universal would not have any financial investment in the park.  It quoted Michael Silver, Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs at NBC Universal as saying, “Russia is a very significant and attractive market for us, we see big potential for amusement parks here.”  InPark Magazine has confirmed that much like it did in 2010 with a potential Korean park operation, NBC Universal registered a foreign limited-liability company in Delaware on March 19, 2012 – Universal Studios Moscow Planning Services LLC.

Both Pravda, the paper of the country’s Communist party, and Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Russian government’s official newspaper, are reporting that approval for construction was given on December 13, 2012 by the city’s commission for urban planning and land.  Vedomosti, a Russian business journal, reports that the resort will now encompass 1.2 million square meters (150,000 still be allocated to the Universal Studios theme park), and will will also entail “three-and four-star hotels (120,000 sq. m.), an office complex (160,000 sq. m.), as well as retail space, a winter garden, a water park, a conference center, a music theater, etc. In addition, the investor is obliged to organize parking for at least 10,000 cars.” Vedomosti adds that Silver has “confirmed that [NBC Universal] has reached a preliminary agreement with [BIN Group].” Hlas Ruska (“Voice of Russia”), the national radio broadcasting company, reports that the Moscow park will have the lowest ticket price of any Universal theme park – at US$30.  Universal Studios Moscow is projected to open in 2018.
