Complete List: Here’s What Happened to the Star Cruises Fleet

  • March 15, 2023

SuperStar Aquarius

With the sales of the SuperStar Aquarius and the SuperStar Gemini in late 2022, the entire Star Cruises fleet has had its fate sealed.

Here’s what happened to the ships operated by the cruise line before its collapse:

SuperStar Aquarius Year Built: 1993 Capacity: 1,529 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

In November, the SuperStar Aquarius became the latest cruise ship formerly owned by Star Cruises to be sold to a scrapyard.

Renamed Arius, the 1993-built vessel spent several months laid up in Sri Lanka before departing on its final voyage to India – where it’s currently being dismantled .

SuperStar Gemini Year Built: 1992 Capacity: 1,472 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

The former SuperStar Gemini also ended up beached for scrapping in November. Like its sister ship SuperStar Aquarius, the 1992-built vessel spent several months docked in Sri Lanka before heading to India.

Renamed Gem, the former Norwegian Dream is now being recycled at the Alang Shipbreaking Yard , with its building materials and fixtures being sold off or repurposed.

Star Pisces Year Built: 1991 Capacity: 1,384 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

In mid-2022, the Star Pisces became the second cruise ship of the former Star Cruises fleet to be sold to a scrapyard.

One of the company’s original vessels, the cruise ferry ended its 31-year sailing career after being beached at India’s Alang Ship Breaking Yard in July .

The Taipan Year Built: 1989 Capacity: 64 guests Location: Singapore Fate: Sold for further service

In May 2022, the Taipan became the only cruise ship in the former Star Cruises fleet to find a new operator.

Previously being used for charters and incentive cruises in Southeast Asia, the 32-cabin mega yacht was acquired by OM Ships , a German religious organization who plans to transform it into a missionary ship and floating bookshop.

SuperStar Libra Year Built: 1988 Capacity: 1,494 guests Location: Aliaga, Turkey Fate: Scrapped

The SuperStar Libra was also sold for scrapping in 2022. After ending its public operations in 2018, the former Star Cruises vessel arrived at the Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard in May .

Before ending its sailing career, the 1988-built cruise ship spent its last years serving as a floating hotel at the MV Werften – a Genting-owned shipyard in Wismar, Germany.

Firstly, its unwavering commitment to luxury and comfort ensures an unforgettable experience for all who step aboard. From meticulously designed accommodations catering to every preference to a plethora of dining options serving delectable cuisine from around the globe, the ship's dedication to excellence is evident in every detail.

SuperStar Gemini History

The cruise ship now known as the SuperStar Gemini had a long and varied history under different names and owners. It began its life in 1992, built for Norwegian Cruise Line and christened the Dreamward. In 1998, the ship underwent a significant lengthening process and was renamed the Norwegian Dream. Finally, in 2012, the ship joined the Star Cruises fleet and received its last name, SuperStar Gemini. From then, it primarily operated in the Asia-Pacific region, sailing out of Singapore. Unfortunately, the SuperStar Gemini's journey came to an end in 2022 when its parent company, Genting Hong Kong, faced financial difficulties amidst the pandemic, and the ship was sold for scrap.

Built : 1992 Operator : Star Cruises Capacity : Accommodating up to 1,532 passengers and 720 crew members. Length : 230 meters (754.59 feet) Width : 29 meters (95.14 feet) Number of Cabins : 765 Speed : Average cruising speed of 18 knots, maximum of 20 knots Gross Tonnage : 50,764 GRT

Other Facilities

Why the SuperStar Gemini is No Longer in Service

Here's a deeper dive into why the SuperStar Gemini is no longer in service:

Genting Hong Kong's Collapse : The primary reason for the SuperStar Gemini's demise was the financial collapse of its parent company, Genting Hong Kong. The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a devastating blow to the cruise industry, and Genting Hong Kong was particularly hard hit. In early 2022, the company filed for liquidation.

Liquidation of Assets : During a liquidation process, a company's assets are sold to repay debts. Sadly, the SuperStar Gemini was amongst the assets put up for sale.

Sold for Scrap: Due to the age of the ship and the depressed state of the cruise market at the time, the SuperStar Gemini did not find a buyer interested in continuing its use as a cruise vessel. Ultimately, it was sold for scrap metal.

A Changing Market : The SuperStar Gemini's fate highlights the harsh reality of the cruise industry. Older ships can face challenges in an increasingly competitive market focusing on new, larger, and more feature-packed vessels. The pandemic accelerated this shift, leaving older ships less desirable.

It's important to note: While the SuperStar Gemini is gone, Star Cruises still exists with other ships in their fleet. The cruise industry is gradually recovering, and if you're interested in cruising, there are still many options available.

Sold for Scrap : Due to the age of the ship and the depressed state of the cruise market at the time, the SuperStar Gemini did not find a buyer interested in continuing its use as a cruise vessel. Ultimately, it was sold for scrap metal.

Note: The current fleet of Star Cruises ships is operated by Resorts World One under the name Genting Dream Cruises.

This Small-ship Cruise Line Just Announced 2 New All-suite Vessels Will Join Its Fleet

Windstar Cruises is scheduled to launch Star Seeker in 2025 and Star Explorer in 2026.

Boutique small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises is growing its fleet, adding two 224-passenger vessels — both acquisitions from Mystic Cruises —  in the next two years. Star Seeker is slated to make its debut in December 2025 and Star Explorer is scheduled to follow a year later in December 2026.

Star Seeker is under construction, while Star Explorer is currently sailing as Quark Expeditions' World Explorer. B oth ships will be reworked to include signature features of Windstar ships, from a watersports platform to Owners Suites with wraparound balconies to a whirlpool on the bow.

Dining, in particular, will be a main focus on the ships, as Windstar has a partnership with the James Beard Foundation. The ships' dining options spaces will be expanded to include the on-deck Star Grill, the casual Yacht Club café and lounge, and a re-imagined Amphora main dining room, which will now have outdoor seating.

“Our goal was to ensure these ships are unmistakably Windstar, and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this,” Christopher Prelog, Windstar Cruises’ president, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We are thrilled for this expansion, building on the success of our game-changing Star Class in small-ship cruising with guests and travel partners, while offering new experiences. This growth reflects the dedication of our incredible crew and team, allowing us to broaden our destination portfolio and even bring one of our Wind Class sail ships back to Tahiti.”

Though both ships have ice-strengthened hulls capable of sailing in the polar regions, Windstar doesn't currently operate such itineraries, focusing primarily on the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific Islands. But these new ships may open doors to adventures in the years to come.

“As part of our company’s expanding portfolio, Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future ahead," Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of parent company Xanterra Travel Collection, said in a statement. "We’re excited about the possibilities of where Windstar will sail and the opportunities it brings our officers, crew and staff, and our guests.”

Itineraries and booking information for Star Seeker will be announced in June 2024. You can sign up for updates at windstarcruises.com/newships .

Windstar Cruises is excited to announce that we’re expanding our fleet with not one, but TWO new all-suite Star Class ships. Coming Dec. 2025, Star Seeker will be our first-ever Star Class new build, followed by Star Explorer in Dec. 2026. Serving 224 guests, each ship will feature 112 suites with full private verandas and infinity windows. They’ll also come with two new Owner’s suites with wrap-around balconies, perfect for evening cocktails or a private dinner.

Each ship will include a Watersports platform, a cozy Yacht Club café and lounge, and a two-story spa and fitness facility, among other amenities. Plus, both ships will have ice-strengthened hulls, unlocking access to new destinations. Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future ahead. We’re excited about the possibilities this opens up for our officers, crew, staff and especially our guests. Here’s to a future of sailing 180 degrees from ordinary!

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

Norwegian Cruise Line's second Prima-class ship Norwegian Viva arrived to Miami on Nov. 28, 2023 as it began its first Caribbean sailing season. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

RICH HERITAGE

Barayan: cruise ship tourism unexploited frontier.

  • Fort Jesus and Old Town Mombasa remain two of the most underdeveloped tourist attractions in Mombasa.
  • In Stone Town Zanzibar, there are not less than 21 places to stay in of differing costs while in Old Town Mombasa there is none.

star cruises ship

One of the unique pleasures of Mombasa is that there are places of leisure that people visit for the same reason irrespective of social status, amount of personal wealth, state of one’s health, ethnic background, age, religious persuasion or gender.

One such place is Mama Ngina Waterfront. When one sits there within a short time one will see a speck on the horizon grow and grow, finally evolving into a massive ship of similar height to a six-storey building or more as it sails through the Likoni channel into the Port of Mombasa.

Not all ships that sail into the port bear cargo, some are cruise ships which bring tourists. Cruise tourism involves catering to the sightseeing, recreational and entertainment needs of passengers travelling on ships with multiple destinations and ports of call.

Cruise tourism products largely fall into three broad categories—contemporary, premium and luxury—with an estimated average daily cost of $200 (Sh 26,010) , $350 (Sh 45,518) and $500 (Sh 65,025) respectively.

At a port of call such as Mombasa, the cruise ship tourist spends an average of $190 (Sh 24,710) per day, which is significantly more than the $107 (Sh 13,915) the normal foreign tourist spends. Last year, according to Kenya Ports Authority records, there were about 12,000 such tourists, which is less than 10 per cent of the total 130,000 foreign visitors received.

To attract more cruise ship visitors we need to understand them and their requirements.

Statistics show that 93 per cent are from North America and Europe with an average age of 46 and 83 per cent married. Some 65 per cent are educated to college level, 72 per cent employed, while 21 per cent are retirees. Active adventure is the main excursion attraction of 62.5 per cent of these visitors.

The average duration of stay at a port of call is estimated at three days, which means that the excursions have to have minimal transfer time to the active site for the visitor to receive full value of money. Fort Jesus and Old Town Mombasa remain two of the most underdeveloped tourist attractions in Mombasa.

Fort Jesus, built between 1593 and 1596 to secure the safe passage of Portuguese ships to India, was fought for and lost nine times before the Omani Arabs took full control from the Portuguese in 1698.

Its rich history does not end with the imposing fort overlooking the entrance to the old port, but below the water where ancient shipwrecks lie.

Dr Bita, the head of underwater archaeology at the National Museums of Kenya, and Prof Castro, the only renowned scholar of Vasco Da Gama era shipwrecks worldwide, have made remarkable findings at Fort Jesus and along the Kenya coast giving Mombasa a solid foundation to build underwater diving as a tourism product.

The Santo Antonio de Tanna sunk in the 1697 siege of Mombasa and lies underwater at the foot of Fort Jesus, while one of Vasco Da Gama’s ships that hit the reef at Ngomeni and sunk has also been identified.

Old Town Mombasa has faced great difficulty keeping its authenticity with the changing socioeconomic needs of the resident community. Only recently the visit there by King Charles of England brought again into the limelight the existence of the oldest mosques in East and Central Africa founded in 1570 that has not only never once closed its doors to worshippers in all these centuries, but is one of the only two mosques in the world to have two mihrabs.

Despite the existence of such rich history and culture, there is a glaring difference between Old Town Mombasa and Stone Town Zanzibar in the development of the hospitality industry. In Stone Town Zanzibar, there are not less than 21 places to stay in of differing costs while in Old Town Mombasa there is none.

One such ready market for exploitation is Portugal, which unlike Spain is not within the top 30 origins of tourists to Kenya. Some 16,400 Spanish nationals visit Kenya annually despite the country having no significant historical ties with Kenya yet both countries have similar minimal wage rates.

With products tailor-made for cruise ship tourists and Kenya Port Authority maintaining its exemplary efficiency, the potential target of 140,000 cruise visitors annually could be attainable.

Windstar's newest cruise ships - Star Seeker & Star Explorer

CruiseMapper logo

Windstar Cruises unveils plans to broaden its fleet with the introduction of two all-suite superyachts - Star Seeker and Star Explorer.

The initial vessel, Star Seeker, currently under construction at WestSEA shipyard (in  Viana do Castelo )  is slated for delivery in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026.

Each ship boasts 112 staterooms, all with private step-out balconies and infinity windows. Additionally, two aft-facing Owner’s Suites with wraparound terraces, providing ideal settings for evening gatherings or private dining.

With a max passenger capacity 224 and staff-to-guest ratio of 1:2, the yachts cultivate an intimate ambiance, promising personalized service throughout.

Guests can indulge in several Windstar guest favorites, including the iconic Watersports Platform with new staircase access, the inviting Yacht Club cafe and lounge, a two-story spa and fitness center, a secluded forward whirlpool on the bow, and an expansive open deck perfect for sunbathing and al fresco dining.

As the designated Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation (JBF), Windstar maintains a dedication to exceptional cuisine. The redesigned main dining venue, Amphora, offers a range of upscale and innovative dishes, including rotating selections from James Beard Foundation–affiliated guest chefs. Al fresco dining options are available at both Amphora and the Star Grill, complemented by a specialty restaurant and 24-hour room service.

Star Seeker and Star Explorer feature ice-strengthened hulls, granting access to new destinations. Equipped with cutting-edge safety , propulsion , and navigation technology, including pump jet thrusters and forward-facing Sonar, the ships prioritize safety and efficiency. To minimize environmental impact and uphold sustainability commitments, the vessels are outfitted with tier III Nox-rated Rolls Royce engines and shore power connectivity to reduce port emissions. Advanced wastewater treatment systems meet global standards, demonstrating the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

The fleet expansion enables Windstar to reintroduce the beloved Wind Class ship, Wind Star , to Tahiti, where it will join Star Breeze in 2027, meeting the rising demand for French Polynesian voyages. With over 36 years of experience navigating the islands of French Polynesia, Windstar offers travelers a choice between sailing aboard Wind or Star Class ships.

Full itineraries and booking information for Star Seeker will be released in late June 2024.
