City Guides

1.  City Guides

What started out more than 30 years ago as a request from the mayor for librarian-led tours of City Hall has evolved into a nonprofit operation with more than 200 volunteers who lead some 50 different walking tours all over San Francisco—entirely for free (though donations are gladly accepted). Guides are local history buffs who live to share their knowledge and wax poetic about their city. Tours cover every niche, nook and cranny of S.F.—from Russian Hill stairways and Alfred Hitchcock film locations to Chinatown tongs and gangs and the 1906 earthquake and fire.  Free

Precita Eyes Murals Tour

2.  Precita Eyes Murals Tour

With more than 200 murals canvasing its walls and back alleys, the Mission District is the city’s mecca for political, cultural and just downright beautiful street art. Since it was established in 1977, the Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center has worked with local artists to create and preserve many of the stunning works. On the third Saturday of every month, founder and director Susan Cervantes leads guided mural walks through the Mission. Learn how the art reflects the changing cultural and physical landscape and tells the story of the nabe's Hispanic heritage. $20

Gourmet Walks

3.  Gourmet Walks

Given the city’s rep as a food mecca, it’s no surprise that there are a glut of “eat your way through…” tours in SF. Gourmet Walks stands out by having a great grasp on what people want, focusing on hip neighborhoods, of-the-moment dishes (think salted caramel ice cream, artisan salumi and fresh-baked breads), and of course, chocolate. Local cooks and culinary aficionados lead tasting tours of Hayes Valley , Russian Hill and Alamo Square that offer plenty of samples, plus meet-and-greets with chefs, cheesemongers, bakers and chocolatiers. $55–$90

AT&T Park Tours

4.  AT&T Park Tours

Regardless of where your team loyalties lie, few can argue about the fabulousness of AT&T Park, which in 2000 kicked off the transformation of South Beach from an abandoned warehouse wasteland into a bonafide five-star neighborhood. Behind-the-scenes tours of the park are offered all year, giving fans a chance to sit in the dugout, visit the clubhouse and press box, soak up the spectacular Bay views and walk on the field where the Giants have taken three World Series victory laps in the last six years. $22 adults, $17 seniors, $12 kids 12 and under

Teas, Temples and Beatniks Tour

5.  Teas, Temples and Beatniks Tour

This walking tour pairs up two of the city’s most visited neighborhoods: Chinatown and North Beach. Start at Chinatown Gate, then venture further into the ‘hood to taste mooncakes at a local bakery, have your fortune told at the oldest Chinese temple in the country and taste freshly made fortune cookies at the factory. Then you’ll head into North Beach to see former hangouts of Beat poets like Jack Kerouac and look up Coit Tower. $66

The Castro Historical Walking Tour

6.  The Castro Historical Walking Tour

Though San Franciscans have lived in the Castro for decades, it didn’t become the thriving LGBTQ community it is today until after World War II, when discharged LGBTQ servicemen settled in the neighborhood. Since then, the Castro has become a hotbed for social and political activism and a symbol of acceptance and diversity for people around the world. Discover the nabe’s history on a walking tour that visits cultural and historic landmarks like the Rainbow Honor Walk, Harvey Milk's residence and the Castro Theater. $25

7.  SF on Tap Tours

Hop heads can quench their thirst for suds on an SF on Tap brewery tour. Guided walking tours take drinkers to three local breweries and craft beer bars in Haight-Ashbury , SoMa or North Beach , where you'll sip complimentary beers as you learn about the city's beer history. Each tour is capped at 12 people, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to pepper your guide with questions about his favorite local brews.  $79

San Francisco Urban Hike

8.  San Francisco Urban Hike

Thanks to the city’s hilly terrain, walking in San Francisco might as well be considered hiking—just in an urban jungle instead of, well, a natural one. Ascend some of S.F.’s steepest hills on this three-hour tour that requires you to wear hiking boots. You’ll climb Kite Hill, ride the Seward Street Slides, discover a hidden eucalyptus forest and summit Twin Peaks. The sweeping views of the city are worth the perspiration. $49

Historic Sausalito Houseboat Tour

9.  Historic Sausalito Houseboat Tour

After World War II ended, the once-bustling shipbuilding operation in Richardson Bay shut down, leaving tons of wood and scrap metal behind. Enterprising locals took the opportunity (and free materials) to build an entire community of floating houseboats in the harbor. Today, Sausalito is still home to more than 200 houseboats—everything from rough-and-tumble shantys to million-dollar properties. Explore the waterfront community that inspired Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay” on this walking tour. $58.83

San Francisco Love Tour

10.  San Francisco Love Tour

Channel the spirit of peace and love that once enveloped San Francisco on this ‘60s-themed bus tour. Instead of a charter coach, the tour uses a vintage Volkswagen van decked out with neon blue seats, shag carpets and beaded curtains to set the scene. You’ll cruise all over town to landmarks like Lombard Street and Golden Gate Park, plus the former homes of counter-culture icons like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. $48

Golden Gate Park Self-Guided Bike Tour

11.  Golden Gate Park Self-Guided Bike Tour

Though 13 million people visit San Francisco’s verdant oasis every year, few of them explore all of the park’s 1,017 acres. Instead of hoofing it, hop on a bike to cover more ground in less time. Cycle to the Conservatory of Flowers, National AIDS Memorial Grove, Beach Chalet, Lloyd Lake, Japanese Tea Garden and other lauded landmarks at your own pace. $32

Barbary Coast Trail

12.  Barbary Coast Trail

If you’re not a tour kind of person, but you still want to find out the backstory of San Francisco’s wild and scandalous Gold Rush past, take yourself down to the Barbary Coast Trail. The walking path was created in 1998 by local historian Daniel Bacon in conjunction with the San Francisco Historical Society. Bacon worked tirelessly for years to install more than 170 bronze Barbary Coast Trail medallions in the sidewalk that trace a 3.8-mile path through the history of gold diggers, shanghai dens, railroad barons and ship graveyards. The best part is you can do as little or as much as you want and you don’t need to go in order. Pick up a printed pocket guide, a Walking San Francisco on the Barbary Coast Trail book or download an audio tour. For the full experience, you can also book Bacon for a guided tour ($25 a person, $400 minimum).

Coit Tower Murals

Tucked away in an unpainted tower on a hill, one of the greatest works of Social Realist art in America lies hidden away. A set of murals created by 26 of California’s best artists, it documented California life in the 1930s from a socialist perspective: romanticizing workers, illustrating inequality, and sometimes even winking at the Soviet Union. It was controversial, sure. But as a work of art? Nobody could deny that it was stunningly gorgeous.

Just as San Francisco quickly rebuilt itself following the 1906 earthquake, SF and tech companies teamed up to encourage the rapid transformation of South of Market after the financial downturn in 2008. SOMA became an architect’s dream: capital and demand were everywhere, and the district became an architectural gallery featuring soaring skyscrapers next to Beaux Arts and postmodern masterpieces.   We'll see how these buildings responded to both earthquake threats, and the stresses of rapid development on the community.

City Hall and the Civic Center

After the original City Hall perished in the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco had a chance to think bigger the second time around. Civic Center is a campus that houses some of the city’s most important governmental and cultural institutions. Minimal walking — but maximum awe.

Cityscapes And Public Places

The 1985 Downtown Plan was one of the most important piece of red tape in San Francisco history. With accelerating downtown development, city officials laid down some ground rules: If you’re going to build here, you’re going to have to pay a little extra to cover the necessary infrastructure improvements. Oh — and you have to devote a portion of your project to a publicly accessible open space. Thus, Privately-Owned Public Open Spaces (POPOS) were born.

North Beach

When you bring up North Beach, most people think of the transformative literature produced by its local beatniks and bohemians in the 1950s. But that does a disservice to its rich history as San Francisco’s Little Italy, where a swarm of immigrants in the 1910s established the authentic Italian character that remains its defining quality. The Beats may get the spotlight — but the Italians made North Beach what it is today. Soak up the unique charm of this delightfully historic neighborhood and — if you can look up from the sights for a moment — see an unexpectedly spectacular view of downtown.

Fisherman's Wharf: A Hidden History

It may not look like it now, but underneath the sleek, commercial facade of today’s redeveloped Fisherman’s Wharf, hundreds of Italian immigrants built an entire industry on the backs of Dungeness crab. Not everything on this tour happens on the water. We'll look at Ghirardelli Square, once the factory of San Francisco's most beloved chocolatier. Passing the Hyde Street Cable Car Turnaround we  discuss San Francisco's cable cars and we'll explain the stories of many of the historic ships anchored at the Hyde Street Pier.  Discover a new side of the Wharf, featuring stories of the Bay that locals themselves don't know.

Mission Murals

Murals first appeared in the Mission in the 1970s and soon became central to the area's identity.  Over the decades artists have used the walls of the Mission, its buildings and even entire alleyways to give voice to matters of social and political importance to the neighborhood. You'll start in beautiful Precita Park and be moved by the stories that inspired the murals and finish in Balmy Alley where you will see a display of powerful works expressing feelings about immigration, war, gentrification, as well as healing and the celebration of women. This is an unforgettable walk, both visually dazzling and emotionally impactful.

Customer Reviews

  • If you only have 1-day to visit San Francisco take this tour! "Our cruise had 1-day in San Francisco and this was really the best way to see it all. In the morning we covered some of the best-known San Francisco neighborhoods, along with tons of photo stops along the way. Our guide had plenty of fun stories and history along the route, which dropped us right back in Fisherman’s Wharf. My family grabbed a quick lunch and enjoyed Pier 39’s sea lions before our afternoon Alcatraz Tour. My kids loved the Alcatraz ferry and the audio tour; I loved the fact that I didn’t have to worry about any of the logistics - Thank you Dylan’s!” Kate S.
  • The most amazing 1-Day tour package, beautiful scenery, perfectly organized! "Everything was exactly as advertised. Our bus was waiting, on time and ready to go. Our tour guide was absolutely awesome. Tons of photo ops. You get to see a lot of the key points in the city, like the bridge, Haight-Ashbury, Little Italy, etc., so much history. After enjoying lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf we explored Lombard Street by foot (as our guide told us the best way to see it), before heading to Alcatraz. No line-ups, no hassle and tickets were ready for us when we arrived. Worth every penny! Total class act!” Moe T.
  • Comprehensive and interesting, 5 Stars "We chose this tour because we only had 1 day in San Francisco as part of a honeymoon tour of the USA. It was perfect, great weather, and our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable and made the whole tour very casual. Lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf was excellent per the recommendation of our guide. Alcatraz was also highly enjoyable. Overall a wonderful way to get a feel for the Bay Area and know where to come back to. We also took plenty of memorable photos!” Andrea T.

How We're Different

We are not a big bus company! It’s very common to see large hop-on, hop-off buses around San Francisco, but we take a much more personal approach. Our guides not only have intimate knowledge and unmatched enthusiasm for the Bay City, but we also use specialized minibuses which are built specifically for city tours. We can literally take you where the big buses can’t go.

Our minibuses have large windows for full view of the city as we conduct the tour and are climate controlled with plenty of room for everyone. We stop several times and provide many photo opportunities.

Alameda is a great place to visit some local wineries and breweries. You will have plenty to see and do for a full and fun day. Plus, if you depart from Pier 41, the Short Hop Ferry is only $1 with a clipper card! Find out more about fares and schedules here . The island of Alameda often has warmer temperatures than the city as well, so a great place to go for some sunny weather. Urban Legend Cellars is a great starting point and has some beautiful views of the San Francisco skyline.

When in doubt, exploring a city through food is always a great option. All throughout San Francisco, there are plenty of food parks. Spend some time outside with friends and eat to your heart’s content. You can find food truck parks throughout all the neighborhoods of the city, but some notable parks include Parklab Gardens and SPARK Social in Mission Bay, District SIX in SOMA, and Off the Grid: Fort Mason Center in the Marina District. Grab a buddy, hop on a scooter, and have a day of eats!

Chinatown Walking Tour

San Francisco is home to the largest China Town in the world outside of Asia. It is about 24 square blocks and a must-visit in the city. There is an endless amount of amazing food and culture. You can find the Dragon’s Gate entrance to China Town at Bush St. & Grant Ave and it runs north from there.

Little Italy Walking Tour

If you continue North past Chinatown, you’ll run into North Beach which is home to the Little Italy of San Francisco. Home to some incredible Italian food and bustling nightlife, this is a great spot to end up. Walking along and around Columbus Ave, you are sure to stumble upon a gem. One of the best spots for nightlife in the area is Green St. You can also grab some pizza and maybe a bottle of wine and head to Washington Square Park for a picnic. This is a quaint park right in the heart of Little Italy / North Beach next to a beautiful St. Peter & Paul Church

Brunch in the Castro before Picnicking at Dolores

So long, #Fogust – let the San Francisco summer begin! See you at Dolores Park this weekend, @KarlTheFog will be on vacation pic.twitter.com/0gnBtZ3NXR — LoveDolores (@lovedoloressf) August 31, 2018

The Castro neighborhood is alive with wonderful energy. It’s a great place to walk around or grab a mimosa or two. There are many top-notch brunch spots throughout the area. Fable on Castro St. is a great option. Then not to far down the way is Dolores Park, one of the best places to get the most out of a sunny day. It will be warmer than everywhere else and full of people enjoying the day. It is the perfect spot for a sunny park hang day.

Giants Game

Now this is an All-Star! @honeymahogany crushed the National Anthem today at the @SFGiants game. So proud!!! 🇺🇸🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ #TransIsBeautiful #PRIDE pic.twitter.com/Cq7prqfpCn — Sister Roma (@SisterRoma) June 6, 2021

What makes you feel the energy of a city more than being surrounded by thousands of other people all full of pride in their city? Not much, and a great way to experience one of those scenarios is to attend a Giant’s baseball game. Even if you are not a big baseball fan, it’s a fun and fairly inexpensive event that is fun to attend. Grab a hotdog and some delicious stadium snacks and just enjoy being around the energy of some fellow San Franciscans.

These are just a few of the countless ways to tour the city of San Francisco, but they are classics for a reason. The best tours are always the ones that are outside, give you an opportunity to have a great time with friends and family, and encourage you to soak in the culture of wherever you are. Hopefully, all of these bring all of that to you. Happy touring!

A woman inspects plants in a floral shop.

A local’s travel guide to the San Francisco Bay Area: what to eat, see and do in three days

The best spots from Oakland to San Francisco to the Pacific coast – and a tourist-free way to admire the Golden Gate Bridge

S an Francisco is widely known for its cable cars, foggy weather and hilly landscapes – but as someone who has lived here for five years, I know there is a lot more to the city than the picturesque postcards would have you believe.

I grew up in Iowa, where life is a little quieter, and I later lived in New York City, which nobody would describe as quiet. The Bay Area is my favorite place I have ever lived, though, a happy medium between a noisy city and peaceful small town – with plenty to do, and beautiful naturescapes never far away.

San Francisco and its surrounding areas have been subject to a lot of bad press recently, but for me, despite the problems (and occasional traffic congestion), living here feels like having access to a sunny playground all year round. If I were offering a friend a locals-only guide, here’s what I would suggest they get up to.

Day 1: The Jewels of Oakland

I love San Francisco, but the entire time I have lived out here I have stayed on the east side of the bay. The neighboring city of Oakland, where it is consistently warmer, more vibrant and, frankly, more fun, is what I call home. In general, I suggest renting a car when staying in the Bay Area. If you are primarily sticking around San Francisco, most activities are easily accessible by public transportation, but having a vehicle will give you easier access to all of the beautiful destinations surrounding the city.

A woman walks by a crowded sidewalk cafe.

Start out your day on Piedmont Avenue, which has a number of must-see spots. Grab a bagel or doughnut at the vegan cafe Timeless Coffee and stroll down the block to the beautiful nearby plant store Crimson Horticultur al Rarities . Just across the street, Spectator Books has an excellent selection that leans heavily on local authors. Vintage stores line the street, and I especially enjoy Mercy Vintage , where I once found an excellent wool skirt covered in hand-stitched ducks . I always love to stop by a picturesque flower stand situated in an alleyway on the same street and pet Luna, the shop dog.

After you get your shopping in, head down to Lake Merritt for a stroll. Historically known as “the Jewel of Oakland”, the lake is a popular meeting or strolling place. On a typical weekend day, expect to see the shores lined with picnicking Oaklanders, stands selling food and locally made goods, and lots of wildlife. The full perimeter of the lake is 3.1 miles (5km). I recommend starting at the pergola on the north end and wandering past the bonsai garden towards the Oakland Museum of California , just a half-block walk from the lake, for an afternoon of art.

Kari Paul on the ferry from Jack London Square in Oakland to San Francisco.

After the museum, you can walk to the Lion Dance Cafe in downtown Oakland. The award-winning, farm-to-table restaurant offers an often-changing menu of Teochew-Singaporean and Cali-Italian family recipes. They do not take reservations or preorders, so prepare to wait in line – it’s worth it! Though they offer sit-down dining, I recommend getting the food to go and driving up to Joaquin Miller Park for a beautiful panoramic view of the sunset over the bay. If you can get there before it’s dark, check out the redwood trees in the park as well. They’re breathtaking.

Day 2: Souvenirs & Splurges

A woman eats a flatbread at a counter.

If you are coming from Oakland and want to get to San Francisco on your tour of the Bay Area, there is no better way to do so than by ferry. Park your car in Jack London Square and take the boat route marked for the Ferry Building in San Francisco. If you arrive on a Saturday, there will be a farmers’ market brimming with local fruits and vegetables. No matter what day you visit, the Ferry Building is full of food stands and other shops. You must stop by Arab street food purveyor Reem’s . The Ferry Building location is an outpost of its main restaurant in the Mission and its menu features its signature varieties of man’oushe (a homemade flatbread). Also in the building is the Fog City Flea Trading Post , a cute stop for vintage clothes, jewellery and San Francisco souvenirs.

Take the train to the Mission District , perhaps my favorite neighborhood in San Francisco. Along Valencia Street you’ll find vintage shops and stores selling goods from local artists. My personal favorite is Paxton Gate , an oddities shop that sells everything from crystals and candles to teeth and taxidermy. While you’re in the Mission, be sure to turn down one of the street-art-filled alleyways for a free outdoor gallery of sorts.

Of course, everyone wants to see the Golden Gate Bridge when visiting San Francisco, but rather than book a touristy bike tour, I recommend seeing it from Lands End – the national park which to me is the most beautiful place in the city. Take an Uber there and wander around the Sutro baths. A now-defunct public recreation center that opened in the late 1800s, the Sutro baths featured massive pools, an ice-skating rink and an amphitheater. Today, all that remains are the ruins, which make for a beautiful place to watch the sunset.

A woman and her children smile on a ferry as a couple look on in the background.

For a dinner splurge, I highly recommend Nari , a Thai-Californian restaurant inside the Hotel Kabuki in Japantown. Afterwards, wander to the neighboring Japan Center malls to buy kitschy toys and eat soft-serve matcha or sesame taiyaki ice-cream (from a fish-shaped pastry) at Uji Time Dessert . Close out the evening at the Do Re Mi Music Studio , across the street, a karaoke spot with private rooms available by the hour.

Day 3: Hit the Road

One of the best parts of living in the Bay Area is how easily accessible beautiful natural landscapes are. There are countless day trips you can take from Oakland and San Francisco, but if I had to choose my favorite it would be Bodega Bay – a stunning unincorporated area in Sonoma county along the coast.

A foggy landscape with green hills dropping into the ocean.

Drive up Route 1 and take the long way, stopping at Point Reyes Station and enjoying the beautiful scenery along the shoreline there. Many hikes and beach walks can be found along the way. Keep an eye out for seals. I highly recommend staying at the Lodge at Bodega Bay – which is a relatively affordable luxury experience with room rates starting at $280. As someone who loves birding, this is truly a dream location for me as the Lodge overlooks a protected nature preserve full of wildlife. Relax in the hotel’s infinity hot tub, take a dip in the pool or enjoy its spa amenities. It also has a great on-site restaurant.

While in Bodega Bay, you can also stop by the church where the classic Hitchcock thriller The Birds was filmed. Of course, you will be in wine country, so if that’s your thing check out some local vineyards. I am always sure to drive a little farther up the coast for a stop in Jenner , a tiny beachside town with great hiking trails and kayak rentals. A must-see is Cafe Aquatica , where you can enjoy a coffee overlooking the water and occasional live music. With spotty cellphone service, sitting alongside the water where the river meets the Pacific Ocean and watching seals play on rocks and kayakers float by will make you feel worlds away from life’s responsibilities. Amazingly, though, you’re less than a two-hour drive from San Francisco.
