Route 66

Route 66 is one of the most iconic highways in America. It runs from Chicago to Los Angeles, and for many years was one of the main routes used by westward-bound travelers.

The highway has been immortalized in song, literature, and film, and continues to hold a special place in the American imagination. But where did Route 66 come from?

The highway was first established in 1926 when the U.S. government created a system of numbered highways. Route 66 was assigned the number 66, and it quickly became one of the busiest routes in the country.

In 1938, the highway was paved from end to end, making it even more popular with cross-country travelers. During the height of its popularity in the 1950s, an estimated 200,000 people used Route 66 each year.

Although it has been largely overshadowed by newer interstate highways in recent years, Route 66 still holds a special place in American culture. In some parts of the country, the highway has been preserved as a historical landmark, and it continues to beckon travelers with its promise of adventure .

Chicago – St. Louis / driving distance: 300 mi / 480 km

This morning, pick up your rental car and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the then and now of America along historic Route 66. This legendary old road passes through a variety of pure Americana landscapes and takes in some of the country’s biggest, oldest and most peculiar sites along the way. Begin your journey by following the traditional east-to-west path of Route 66 from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri, cruising through endless cornfields and flat prairies. En route, don’t miss Wilmington’s most photographed “citizen”, the larger-than-life green Gemini Giant, and Atlanta’s Bunyan Giant, a 19-foot statue of Paul Bunyan holding a giant hot dog. In Springfield, stop at the Cozy Dog Drive-In, the birthplace of the corn dog, and explore the legacy of Abraham Lincoln with a visit to the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Once in St. Louis, the largest city along Route 66, you can follow in the footsteps of legendary explorers by visiting the historic sites found throughout the city including the Gateway Arch, the nation’s tallest monument.

Continue through the Ozark Highlands of southern Missouri to Springfield, recognized as the birthplace of Route 66. En route, stop at Meramec Caverns, an extensive set of natural limestone caves whose formations and colors are as unique as they are beautiful. En route to Oklahoma City, stop to view the beloved 20-foot tall cement Blue Whale in Catoosa, a landmark along Route 66, and the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge in Tulsa, honoring the “Father of Route 66’s” memory and connection to the historic highway. Albuquerque – Santa Fe – Albuquerque / driving distance: 116 mi / 186 km

To get a true sense of the Old Route 66, today you will detour to New Mexico’s state capital, Santa Fe. Founded on the ruins of an abandoned Indian village and steeped in history, Santa Fe is the oldest Capital in the U.S., and although it lost its place on Route 66 in 1938, it remains one of the most picturesque cities in the state. At one time this was the end of the old Santa Fe Trail, the earliest trade route linking the American frontier back east with the far west. Plan to visit one of Santa Fe’s famous art galleries, art markets, or museums full of traditional and contemporary art, including works by their own Georgia O’Keeffe, or shop for authentic creations you just won’t find anywhere else.

Do I need a visa to travel to the usa?

In most circumstances, no visa is required for travel to the USA for any British Citizen passport holder and many other European passport holders, whose countries qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This program permits entry for up to 90 days for business or leisure purposes. Everyone must apply to use the VWP via the online Electronic System of Travel Authorization (ESTA).  Advice states this should be done online at least 72 hours prior to departure. On payment of the $14 fee this system usually issues an electronic confirmation within minutes but this is not guaranteed and there are certain criteria travellers must consider before applying via ESTA to use the Visa Waiver Program. Once granted the VWP authorization is valid for 2 years.

It is essential that everyone who plans to travel to the United States reads the information contained on the following page –  Visa Waiver Program

Please note : From 21st January 2016 The United States implemented changes to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) as part of the Terrorist Travel Protection Act of 2015. One of the major changes implemented in January excludes any British National who has travelled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen since March 01st 2011 from using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Full details are contained on the above link but those affected will need to apply for a Visitor Visa with the U.S. Embassy before booking their travel arrangements.

You are advised to complete your ESTA prior to confirming any travel arrangements.

To use ESTA now please only use the following website – Official ESTA Website

Complete North America Limited cannot be held responsible for cancellation charges incurred by travellers who have booked travel and are subsequently unable to travel as part of the VWP or who are unable to obtain a Visitor Visa. If you have any questions after reading the information supplied above please speak to a member of our team.

Do I need a visa to travel to Canada?

British Nationals and travellers from other European countries can enjoy visa-exempt travel to and via Canada but must first use the online Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) at a cost of CA$7.00 per person. Most online applications are approved with minutes by email but the process can take longer particularly if supporting documentation is requested. An eTA is valid for 5 years and allows you to travel for up to 6 months on any one visit.

You are advised to apply for your eTA prior to confirming any travel arrangements.

For applications and full information on the scheme please only visit – Official Canadian Government eTA Website

Complete North America Limited cannot be held responsible for cancellation charges incurred by travellers who have booked travel and are subsequently unable to travel as part of the eTA scheme or who are unable to obtain a Visitor Visa. If you have any questions after reading the information supplied above please speak to a member of our team.

Gilligans

26-Day, Guided Group Tour – Pricing INCLUDES flights!

Unlike some others tour companies around  – our tour actually starts at the beginning of old 66 in Chicago – and finish at the end in LA.

“Gilligans provides the very BEST tour of Route 66″ available.”

We’re not being boastful – that’s what many of the business owners along Route 66 tell our guests. Why?

Simply because we work hard to offer a unique insight into this old highway. Route 66 is more than tail-fins and chrome, or burgers and drive thru’s. Much more…

Our fully guided ‘Official Tour’ provides guests with a comprehensive 26-day tour of Route 66.

We include flights to Chicago (returning from LA) from major cities across the world!

Following 3 nights in Chicago, you will be allocated a fantastic rental car for each couple, along with a well detailed Route book and navigational technology that’s produced by Gilligans, exclusively for our guests.

*Subject to availability

TOUR FORMAT:

Following breakfast, your day usually starts with a morning briefing to outline the day ahead, give an overview about the areas visited and to answer questions.

The group generally departs around 8:30am, and often arrives at the hotel at about 4:30 each afternoon. Some days are shorter – others slightly longer. Time spent driving is approx 2.5-3hrs per day, which allows more time to see what you came to see: Route 66!

Along the way, guests use our GPS platform and extensive Route Book to learn about towns and notable sites as you drive.

We travel as a group – although not in a ‘convoy’ as such – giving guests more freedom to stop for more or less time (dependent on interests) at the places we visit.

Your guide/s also have a few stops planned each day of the tour that really will add value to your Route 66 experience!

2024 Tours: SOLD OUT!

NASCAR & Route 66 has been added for a SELF-DRIVE option with up to 10 other couples / cars.

Day 2 Chicago

This morning you will enjoy a panoramic city tour of Chicago and visit the intersection of E. Adams and S. Michigan in Downtown Chicago - the official starting point of Route 66.

Day 3 St Louis

Today you hit the open road. Travel west to Pontiac, home of the Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum. Enjoy the nostalgic exhibits, then have lunch on your own. Next stop is Lincoln’s tomb, the resting place of the 16th President. Pull into St. Louis late this afternoon.

Day 4 Branson

This morning you will ride a tram 630 feet up to the top of the St. Louis' Gateway Arch, located at Gateway Arch National Park, then set off for Branson, the “Live Music Capital of the Universe.”

Day 5 Oklahoma City

Travel from Branson to Oklahoma City by way of Galena, Kansas. Route 66 goes right through Galena’s historic district. Oklahoma City, known locally as OKC, is renowned for its cowboy culture and excellent barbecue. Visit the Oklahoma City Memorial before checking into your hotel.

Day 6 Amarillo

National Route 66 & Transportation Museum. Enjoy lunch on your own in the charming town, then pull into Amarillo, TX for an included dinner at The Big Texan Steak Ranch.

Day 7 Albuquerque

Stop by Cadillac Ranch, one of Route 66’s stranger art exhibits. Cadillac Ranch consists of ten graffiti-covered Cadillacs buried nose deep in the hard dirt. After a short pit stop in Adrian, Route 66’s halfway point, arrive in Tucumcari for lunch on your own, before heading to Albuquerque.

Day 8 Flagstaff

Enjoy lunch on your own in Gallup, home to the flamboyant Hotel El Rancho that hosted many Golden Age movie stars while they shot classic westerns in the surrounding desert. Continue to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park. The landscape is full of windswept buttes, barren mesas, and breathtaking vistas.

Day 9 Flagstaff

The beauty of the Grand Canyon is the complex and breathtaking result of billions of years of geographic tumult. It is a dramatic, dynamic display of earth’s power. Spend most of the day exploring the Grand Canyon on your own. Return to Flagstaff in the evening.

Day 10 Las Vegas

Your first stop today is Seligman, the “historic birthplace of Route 66." Kingman, Arizona, is full of murals dedicated to Route 66, and is a great place to grab lunch en route to Las Vegas. Arrive in Sin City this afternoon, and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 11 Las Vegas

This morning enjoy a photo op at the Las Vegas sign followed by a tour of the Las Vegas Strip. Then, enjoy an optional tour or spend the day at your leisure. Perhaps explore the reinvigorated downtown, or spend some time at the world famous Strip.

Day 12 Los Angeles

After lunch in Barstow, visit Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch — one of Route 66’s quirkiest roadside attractions. Elmer Long created over 200 trees and cacti — artful eye-catching when illuminated by the hot desert sun.

Day 13 Los Angeles

Today we take a guided tour of Los Angeles and Hollywood, seeing many of the highlights of the City of Angels, including the Sunset Strip and Hollywood and Highland. Enjoy an included farewell lunch on the Santa Monica Pier, the end point of Route 66. Celebrate your trip by looking out at the ocean and up to the sign marked, “End of the Trail.”

Day 14 Depart Los Angeles

Say goodbye to this incredible Route 66 Escorted Tour! Take a transfer to Los Angeles International Airport and enjoy your flight home.

Adventure Tours Route 66

Travelling in small travel group and minibus on Route 66

Good news for all USA fans. Reuthers also designed a USA roadtrip on and along the legendary Route 66 for those who want to take the trip with a minibus. As a led Adventure Tour, the tour has all the highlights in the program that are usually a classic in the saddle of a Harley-Davidson. The roadtrip comprises eight states. Starting point is - following the historic direction from east to west - Chicago. The goal of the tour is Santa Monica in Los Angeles.

The USA trip on and along the legendary Route 66 can hardly be beaten in versatility. Fans of history get their kicks in the adopted home of former President Abraham Lincoln and reverently walk through the "Gateway to the West" in St. Louis. Those who aim high, can take a gondola to the top of the Gateway Arch's. The unique outlook is just as breathtaking as the colorful rock formations of the Grand Canyon - that is explored with a helicopter.

The Reuthers USA roadtrip offers along the Route 66 more than the classic highlights: True insider secrets from Reuthers - especially of culinary nature - line the way along the Route 66. Leather armchairs, hamburgers and steak lure you into the American Diners along the route. And everywhere the Reuthers community is warmly welcomed.

The highlights on the Route 66, however, are incredibly versatile. The Cadillacs projecting into the air in front of the Cadillac Ranch west of Amarillo are absolutely worth seeing. But also the famous bridge that crosses the Canadian River with whopping 38 arches, is a remarkable highlight in the context of Reuthers USA roadtrip along the Route 66.

Make sure you have comfortable shoes! This tour requires a lot of walking.

Orange luggage tags are provided and are to be placed on your “checked luggage” (large bag). You do not need a tag for your carry-on bag, for which you will be responsible for taking on and off the coach. There is limited space in the cabin of the coach, so unless you require your carry-on bag while traveling, we will stow it in the luggage compartment.

On the first and last nights of this tour, you are welcome to pack your carry-on bag with essentials that would enable us to leave your “checked bag” on the coach. This will facilitate faster check-in and luggage delivery. This is not a requirement, merely a suggestion; we will deliver your “checked bag” to your room on the first and last night if you desire, just like every other night of the tour.

Important Information

Each reservation requires a $250 per person deposit planning fee (exceptions may apply) to be credited toward your final payment. Some or all of your deposit may be non-refundable per our cancellation schedule noted in these Terms & Conditions below. We are happy to accept cash, check (preferred) or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) for your deposit.

Throughout 2021 we limited capacity on all our tours. This policy was so overwhelmingly popular by Sunrise travelers, we have made it permanent. In 2022 and beyond, we will limit the capacity on our motorcoaches to 80%. Most Sunrise Tours travel on 50-seat coaches with extra legroom, which means guests will enjoy extra legroom AND at least 6-8 empty seats. In the rare cases when we charter a 55-seat coach, there will be at least 10 open seats on the bus.

Our popular on-board refreshment service on travel days will feature a variety of soda, beer, wine spritzers, juices and sparkling water choices served in recyclable aluminum cans. This is a safe and eco-conscious way for us to deliver the ever-popular Sunrise Tours “happy hour” on tour. We do not typically serve bottled water and ask that while on tour you be responsible for your own hydration and consider the Sunrise Tours drink service a welcome refreshment.

Itinerary and Trip Changes

Two Lane America does not guarantee any particular activity, meal, hotel, or experience listed in the itinerary. Places can open, close, and change at a moments notice. If something changes, we'll always try to replace it with something comparable. We firmly believe we handle any changes fairly and with an extreme emphasis on guest satisfaction.

What are the hotels like?

We stay in a mixture of different “brands” of hotels, but each has been hand-selected from our years of experience. Each hotel includes hot breakfast. Some hotels feature full, sit-down buffets while others are hot breakfasts, but less robust. Most are 3 or 4-star properties and many are less than 5 years old or recently renovated.

Whenever possible, the hotels are all within close walking distance to restaurants, nightlife, etc.

We do not stay at any vintage motels, but we do VISIT multiple vintage motels on the trip such as the Blue Swallow, Roadrunner, Wagon Wheel, and more.

How is this trip different from the guided car caravans?

The only major itinerary difference is that instead of going to Oatman, AZ and Amboy, CA, we detour to Las Vegas, NV for a night.

Obviously, the other main difference is you don't need a vehicle! We handle all that.

The maximum group size for the bus tours is also higher at roughly 40-50 people versus 25 with the car caravans.

I’m part of a club or large group, and we’d like to do the trip as a group! Do we need to register each personal individually?

We love groups! We happily offer group rates and can even offer custom dates if the group is large. Email [email protected] for more info.

Is there porterage at each hotel?

Porterage may or may not be available at each hotel. The larger hotels, yes, you will have included porterage for one suitcase per person.

For the hotels without porterage, the properties are smaller so it won't be too much of a hassle.

What if it rains?

The weather, is, well, the weather. As a general rule, we will roll each day- rain or shine. If incliment weather impacts safety, your tour director may take a break until the weather clears.

What's the bus like? How much luggage can I bring?

The bus will be a later model motorcoach with a bathroom on board.

Everyone can bring 1 "checked bag" i.e. full size suitcase and 1 "carry-on" plus any personal items you'd like with you in the seat while traveling. (FYI The "overhead bins" on coaches are often a little bigger than on airplanes.)

What happens when we get to LA?

After our farewell dinner, we return to the hotel. The next day, you can either fly home, stay in LA later, or make your way home anyway you'd like. You're on your own, but we're happy to help you route a fun trip home.

Can I bring my pet?

We love pets, but sadly, no. Not all of our hotels allow pets.

How much of Route 66 is still there, and how much of it do we drive?

Roughly 80% of Route 66 still exists. We split time between it and the interstate to help us see as many attractions as possible.

Have more questions? Email [email protected] .

Route 66 fun without having to plan a thing! Our Route 66 Bus Tours are great for making lots of friends, seeing all the sights, and not worrying about a thing along the way.
