Crowded House have shared details for the rescheduled North American leg of their ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’ tour, now set to commence in 2023.

Kicking off in Canada at Vancouver’s Orpheum on May 2, Crowded House will then undertake a further 17 shows throughout the month, including two back-to-back performances at Los Angeles’ Wiltern. You can check out all the date below.

The North American leg was originally due to commence in Philadelphia last month, but was postponed after drummer Elroy Finn sustained a “painful” injury to his lower back.

At the time, frontman Neil Finn said: “We are advised that there may be some risk in the recovery process for him to play shows at this time. The good health and future well-being of the band members has to be our priority.”

Tickets for original show dates remain valid for the new run. Remaining tickets are on sale now for all new shows.

The tour comes in support of (and is named for) Crowded House’s seventh album , last year’s Dreamers Are Waiting . The release marked Crowded House’s first album in 11 years, heralded by its lead single, “To The Island”.

Crowded House’s ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’ 2023 US tour dates are as follows:

The new lineup of Crowded House, including Finn’s sons Liam and Elroy

Neil Finn on the return of Crowded House: ‘I am ultimately very optimistic about the world’

As the band release their first record in a decade, the New Zealand songwriter reflects on their influences – from Fleetwood Mac to Donald Trump

Neil Finn, New Zealand music’s jovial elder statesman, is remembering his best friend and bandmate Paul Hester.

He recalls the Crowded House drummer holding Finn’s baby son Liam up to the heavens, recreating a scene from the 70s TV show Roots; how Hester taught Liam’s younger brother, Elroy, to play the drums. But Hester’s gone now – he took his own life in 2005.

“Paul is a very constant presence in my life – I think about him all the time,” Finn says over Zoom from his home in Auckland, New Zealand. “A lot of the good memories and good associations with Paul resonate easily as much as the sadness of losing him.”

For Finn, Hester’s spirit lives on in Crowded House’s new lineup, which officially includes Liam and Elroy (now in their 30s, the brothers have played solo, together and with their father for years); founding bass player Nick Seymour; and longtime producer Mitchell Froom, who joined the band after decades of convincing. Together they’ve released Dreamers Are Waiting, the band’s first album in more than a decade.

“I know Paul would be delighted,” Finn says. “It would have made perfect sense to him, because everyone in this [lineup] has got a really strong connection to the whole history of Crowded House, the whole ethos, the humour and the musicality. In some ways it’s a return, as much as it’s a new phase, to a spirit that existed from the very beginning.”

With just one international hit, 1986’s Don’t Dream It’s Over, international readers may not fathom the occasion of a new Crowded House album; how thoroughly the band’s 80s and 90s catalogue is entwined in the cultural fabric of Australia and New Zealand. In 1996 more than 100,000 bereft fans packed the Sydney Opera House’s forecourt steps to farewell the band’s original lineup of Finn, Seymour and Hester. (When told of this assignment, one colleague texted me: “I would crumble. He is a god to me.”)

For antipodeans, those early albums are akin to Graceland or Born in the USA, with the prolific Finn our version of Tom Petty. Since starting in his brother Tim’s beloved new wave band Split Enz (Tim played in Crowded House for a time too), Finn has released seven Crowded House records and at least a dozen others.

Two charity albums corralled lauded admirers including the Smiths’ Johnny Marr, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Radiohead’s Phil Selway and Ed O’Brien, Wilco and KT Tunstall. And it was the attention of another famous and longtime fan, Mick Fleetwood, that spurred the creation of Dreamers Are Waiting. When Fleetwood Mac’s longstanding lead guitarist Lindsey Buckingham was ousted, Finn was unexpectedly called to their ranks for a tour of North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

“It was just crazy really – although it’s amazing how things become normal,” says Finn. “[You’re] standing in rehearsal and singing with Stevie [Nicks] and Christine [McVie]; with John McVeigh and Mick Fleetwood, one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time. But within a week or two, you’re just making music with people. It was an unfamiliar role for me … being a part of the machine.”

Neil Finn, centre, flanked by John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and Mike Campbell

Playing Fleetwood Mac’s propulsive songs kickstarted Finn’s desire to record an “outgoing”, rather than introspective, album; and a move to Los Angeles for his new gig aligned a nexus of collaborators. Liam was living in LA with his wife and young sons, and Elroy and Froom had moved there too – with Seymour travelling from his home in Ireland. Rehearsals began in mid-November 2019, the very day after the 13-month Evening With Fleetwood Mac tour finished.

“There is momentum when you come off the road … there’s a good energy for music. You’ve taken a lot in, absorbed a lot. Somehow there’s this willingness to express yourself and aspirations are set high, because you’re fresh from the sound of applause,” says Finn, poking fun at his profession’s desire for adulation.

Dreamers Are Waiting is a richly textured record about treasuring loved ones and securing their future, the myths we indulge to make it all seem OK. “Our generation being in control has really fucked things up,” Finn says. Recording it in the US, in the final year of the Trump presidency, has woven threads of anxiety and portent through it.

The gossamer Show Me the Way, for instance, is filled with vivid imagery Finn says crept in subconsciously: handguns under pillows, red and blue, sugarcane plantations and burning crosses. The album is bombastic, absurd and hilarious at points too, with Finn playing the exasperated town crier, bewildered at society’s ambivalence to its impending doom. And on Whatever You Want (the video for which stars Mac DeMarco) he tears down charlatans and their enablers:

‘This is not right; this man is a fake!’ But they will follow him down to the edge of the cliff And if he tells them to jump They will jump right in.

“It’s not just the obvious big orange one in America,” Finn says. “It’s not new. People who achieve power through dubious means are usually surrounded by a coterie of arse lickers who love their little piece of the power structure, who hang on to it and do anything they can to be in that mix.

“I don’t normally venture into those areas [lyrically] because far better minds than me are able to express it … but I was compelled, and that song just found its way out.”

Nine-tenths of the rhythm tracks were recorded in those LA sessions, at Valentine Recording Studios – a treasure trove of analogue vintage equipment and perfectly preserved 70s interiors. Eventually though, surging Covid-19 cases forced the band to retreat to their corners of the world.

For Finn, that meant finishing the album remotely in New Zealand, affording him “the time to ruminate and dream away with [the songs]”, dismantle and reassemble them, before adding in contributions from the band – flourishes of lockdown-induced tinkering – like French horn samples sent in by Seymour that Finn says may not have materialised under a recording studio’s time constraints.

Dreamers is not a “pandemic album” but its songs have an uncanny relevance to today’s cataclysms, particularly in relation to New Zealand – a place its people (including Finn) once clamoured to leave for opportunities abroad, it’s now perceived as a progressive, Covid-free, island-sanctuary of Hobbit holes and billionaire apocalypse bunkers.

But like anywhere, New Zealand has its dualities. The Indigenous Māori culture is resurgent but wildly overrepresented in prisons and poverty statistics; it has a low population and a crippling housing crisis; agriculture is poisoning its waterways; and Finn sees growing isolationism and a fear of immigration.

“Come to the island / Where we can save our souls / It’s just the right size / The world is beyond us / It’s too enormous / But oh the island is just right,” sings Finn on To the Island, an uneasy reverie of shimmering fantasias.

“I’m not downplaying what is important in ordinary people’s lives, but some of the bigger picture items – you would expect New Zealand to be doing much better at,” Finn says. “Like the environment, poverty and mental health, and acknowledging the incredibly important role of teachers and nurses.

Neil Finn

“All the right noises are being made here now, but I think there’s a really big readjustment that needs to take place for New Zealanders to really feel proud, in a holistic sense, of where we are in our development.”

Which isn’t to say Finn doesn’t love the country, even if he rejects its conservatism and jingoistic flag waving.

“It’s my home, and I feel it when I’m in the presence of nature – there is something elemental and essential about it, that’s not imagined,” he says. Having grandchildren gives him resolve.

“The great thing about having these two beautiful boys to consider is that you have to be optimistic. You can’t just overindulge the morbid thoughts. I am ultimately very optimistic about the world, because I know so many amazing young people and there are just so many good brains out there.”

Finn’s in his 60s now and on Playing with Fire’s first verse you can hear the anxiety of living in a world that feels worse than the one he entered: “ Lately I’ve been lying frozen in my bed / feeling like the end isn’t far away. ” But by its end, it seems his capacity for hope hasn’t been entirely engulfed by flames:

And some may say We’ll turn it round If you believe such a thing I’ll believe such a thing.

Crowded House Announce 2022 North American Tour

crowded house tour members

Today, iconic multi-platinum selling band CROWDED HOUSE officially announced their highly anticipated North American tour that follows on the heels of both sold-out Australian and European legs of the tour along with their seventh studio album Dreamers Are Waiting. The new music as well as the tour features founding members Neil Finn and Nick Seymour along with producer and keyboardist Mitchell Froom, guitarist and singer Liam Finn and drummer Elroy Finn.

“Crowded House are delighted at long last to be able to play shows in North America. We have been picking up the pace recently as the world opens up and can’t wait present the show with this band lineup in absolute top form to the good folk of North America, from sea to shining sea,” said Neil Finn.

Crowded House is a long standing and much-loved vehicle for the song writing talents of Neil Finn. Formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985 out the ashes of New Zealand’s Split Enz by Neil, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour, their eponymous self-titled debut album on Capitol Records went on to global success with the hits “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Something So Strong”. Those songs and many that followed are still resonating with audiences today, the former in particular being one of the most covered songs of the last 20 years. The band’s first incarnation lasted from 1985 through 1996 with 4 studio albums and enjoyed much success worldwide, becoming particularly beloved for their freewheeling and interactive live shows. This lineup said Farewell to the World on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in 1996 with a now legendary performance in front of 150,000 people.

In 2007 following the tragic death of Paul Hester, Neil and Nick felt emotionally compelled to bring Crowded House back, to put some more good history, as they described it, into the story of the band. Drafting in new drummer Matt Sherrod and with long time touring member Mark Hart they released the album “Time On Earth” to critical acclaim and toured the world. Another album, ‘Intriguer”, was recorded in 2009 and Crowded House was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2016, at the same time reprising its Farewell shows at the Sydney Opera House with 4 nights of stunning performances.

Crowded House reborn: Neil Finn talks ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’, their most experimental album in decades

How touring the world with Fleetwood Mac and the maelstrom of 2020 led Neil Finn to revitalise the beloved band

Crowded House album 2021 Dreamers Are Waiting Neil Finn Fleetwood Mac

“We’re not going to sit here like dorks,” Neil Finn recently declared to media who’d assembled virtually and in-person in Auckland’s Roundhead studios to hear Crowded House’s first album in over a decade. The band, Finn said, would not adopt what he called “the Nick Hornby model with sad old wankers staring at the floor”.

“We will play along – it’s a good rehearsal for us, really,” he assured the media coterie.

A man ran to the corner of the room to drop the needle on a vinyl copy of ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’, and Crowded House crackled into life. Gone was the orchestral grandiosity of 2010’s ‘Intriguer’ – replaced by the sound of a band simply “playing in a room”, as Finn put it. That’s no doubt in part due to how Crowded House’s new members aren’t all that new, after all: Finn’s two sons Liam and Elroy have joined on guitar and drums, respectively, as well as Mitchell Froom – the producer of the band’s first three albums – on keyboards.

More rehearsal couldn’t have hurt, either, since it was a day before the start of Crowded House’s 12-date New Zealand To The Island tour, their first live shows since 2016’s ‘Encore’ Sydney Opera House concerts – a greatest hits victory lap marking 20 years since they broke up in 1996. The band went on an “indefinite hiatus” after that, and it almost looked like Crowded House would be consigned to history when Finn accepted an offer to replace Lindsay Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac in 2018.

But as it turns out, working the glitzy global tour circuit with Stevie Nicks actually prompted Finn to return to his band from the Land of the Long White Cloud. “I started thinking differently about what classic bands could be: they could be vital and not nostalgia,” he explained.

Vitality is the elemental force behind ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’, easily Crowded House’s most experimental record since ‘Woodface’ in 1993. When the ever-affable Finn calls NME from a “bright-ish” Auckland two months later, the 63-year-old is practically effervescent after their nationwide tour previewing the new material.

“We found out on the tour… that the five of us sound really, really good,” he laughs down a hissing phone line. “There will be a live special that we recorded and filmed, which we’re just mixing now, and it’s blowing me away a little bit to hear it.”

That special is Live From The Island, an upcoming Crowded House livestream of a New Zealand concert they filmed in March. Taking place June 12, it’ll be the first opportunity for most of the world to see the newest iteration for Crowded House – sans former drummer Matt Sherrod and keyboard-guitarist Mark Hart.

Sherrod, who’d played with Crowded House since 2007, and Hart, who’d been a member since 1993, were dismissed without much public explanation. “That was a tough call,” Finn muses. “Mark is a good friend, a great player, and was obviously a big part of Crowded House for a number of years. Probably to some of the fans, that was a great mystery.”

Finn reveals that after the 2016 Opera House shows, the band tried working on some new music “and it just went around in circles a bit. And to be honest, it didn’t feel like we had a new direction. And I don’t mean that to sound harsh about any of the people in the band, but I just wasn’t feeling it… I think there wouldn’t have been another Crowded House record at this point [with the old line-up].”

“There’s some really lovely things that happen only when a band plays all at once”

‘Dreamers Are Waiting’ came about through the collision of traditional record-making with the warped circumstances of 2020. Sessions began in the classical fashion at the ageing Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles.

“It looks like a timepiece, it’s got lime green carpet on the walls,” Finn recalls. “It isn’t an easy place to get a great sound. But once you get the room working and everybody set up in the right positions, it really came down to using some old skills about balancing in the room.”

Those old skills, as it turns out, refer to shunning headphones and click tracks in favour of the ad hoc magic of a band counting in and playing live.

“There’s some really lovely things that happen only when a band plays all at once. That just doesn’t seem to happen in another context,” Finn says, with a quick caveat lest he be perceived as a grouchy rockist: “Not to say that modern record-making has anything wrong with it.”

But when the pandemic hit, liveness had to be substituted for strangeness. Finn lived in LA with Liam and Elroy throughout the first wave of lockdowns, and worked out of a single room in their home, interrupted only by hummingbirds fluttering outside his window. The band agreed to push the album’s release past 2020 so Crowded House could return to the stage to introduce it – giving them time to make “radical changes” to the material.

Finn embraced his tinkering spirit during this period – something he says comes through particularly on ‘Show Me The Way’. “I actually had quite a strong inclination to destroy the work I’d been doing for the last few days, in the thrill of watching it float to the ground, grabbing the best bits and making something new out of it,” he explains.

In the March listening session, Finn tried to underline the joy ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’ offers amid global sadness – but contemporary paranoia still eats away at its songs. “ Let’s all be quiet / The next generation’s talking / We’re behind the wheel / We’re driving straight to the wall ,” he cries on ‘Playing With Fire’ .

“We’ve got the celebratory feeling about having the band back together. But, you know, I’m one of those people… when things are going really well, there’s just a hint of worry about impending doom” Finn admits. “At the moment, I think we’ve all got that feeling a little bit. We’re emerging, possibly, from this pandemic, and a little bit of hope is starting to creep back – but then there’s this sense that there are bigger problems ahead.”

He halts mid-explanation. “Anyway, I don’t want to dwell on that as a message for the song.”

“I’m fully aware of my own limitations and I’ve decided at some point to make the most of it”

But again, it leaks out. In ‘Whatever You Want’, Finn rails against the “ cult of yes men ”, from the music industry to demagogues in the age of misinformation. The singer is never didactic, however, in large part because he can’t affect narrative songwriting, instead exploring big ideas and feelings with free association.

“I’m fully aware of my own limitations and I’ve decided at some point to make the most of it,” he says. “If I allow myself to be a bit free, and not pinned down by having to be linear, then I can come up with some great lines.”

A vivid example is in ‘Sweet Tooth’ – “ There were six of us / Somehow / Now there’s 17 ” is a vignette of bringing a bag of chips to school, and seeing more and more “friends” asking you to share. It’s a comforting callback to the non-sequiturs that riddle some of the band’s old hits (think ‘Chocolate Cake’). Evidently, the chaos of modernity and a personnel shake-up aren’t enough to erase the wry Crowded House DNA.

But will the band fall into another indefinite hiatus? Not if Finn can help it. Unprompted, Finn says another album from the renewed group might be possible next year, declaring they will “move through the next phase much quicker”.

“I think we’ll make some great gains from having done this touring. It really feels like we’re poised with this great energy and a sense of purpose. We are reborn.”

Crowded House’s ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’ is out now. On June 12, the band will stage Live From The Island. Get tickets here

About Crowded House

Crowded House is a long standing and much-loved vehicle for the song writing talents of Neil Finn. Formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985 out the ashes of New Zealand’s Split Enz by Neil, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour, their eponymous self-titled debut album on Capitol Records went on to global success with the hits “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Something So Strong”. Those songs and many that followed are still resonating with audiences today, the former being one of the most covered songs of the last 20 years.

Drafting in new drummer Matt Sherrod and with long time touring member Mark Hart they released the album Time On Earth to critical acclaim and toured the world. Another album, Intriguer, was recorded in 2009 and Crowded House was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2016, at the same time reprising its Farewell shows at the Sydney Opera House with 4 nights of stunning performances.

Their debut album ‘Lost Friends’won the prestigious J Award for Australian Album of the Year, and they achieved a top 5 ARIA Chart result for ‘Today We’re The Greatest’ earlier this year.

At Centennial Vineyards’ A Day On The Green , Crowded House will be joined by special guests, Teskey Brothers, whilst at Mt. Duneed Estate, Angus and Julia Stone and The Waifs join the lineup and Bimbadgen will welcome Courtney Barnett and The Waifs.

Crowded House unveiled a new lineup last year, featuring founding members Neil Finn and Nick Seymour, along with producer and keyboardist Mitchell Froom, guitarist and singer Liam Finn and drummer Elroy Finn.

Dreamers Are Waiting heralds a further chapter in the Crowded House story. A new generation has grown up and connected with their songs and will now get to experience the band live as they perform legendary anthems from the band’s 35-year career, along with fresh new music.

The closest thing to a bat signal for stoners is the blue lettering of the Cookies logo. When a new storefront comes to a strip mall or a downtown shopping district, fans flock to grand-opening parties, drawn by a love of the brand — one based on more than its reputation for selling extremely potent weed.

People often compare Cookies to the streetwear brand Supreme. That’s accurate in one very literal sense — they each sell a lot of hats — and in other, more subjective ones. They share a penchant for collaboration-based marketing; their appeal to mainstream audiences is tied up with their implied connections to illicit subcultures; and they’ve each been expanding rapidly in recent years.

All of it is inextricable from Berner, the stage name of Gilbert Milam, 40, Cookies’ co-founder and chief executive, who spent two decades as a rapper with a sideline as a dealer — or as a dealer with a sideline as a rapper. With the company’s success, he is estimated to be one of the wealthiest rappers in the world, without having ever released a hit record.
