insider-travel-report

Welcome to Cheese Country

Meet your guides at the Woerden train station for a quick transfer to the village of De Hoef. The adventure begins with lunch—perhaps you’ll taste your first bitterballen or Dutch pancake—followed by bike fitting and safety talk. We’ll set off on our first ride, following bike lanes through beautiful landscapes that look the same as when painters captured them in the Dutch Golden Age. Upon arriving in Woerden, check into our boutique hotel for a taste of genuine Dutch hospitality. After a walk in the charming main square, we’ll enjoy dinner at our favorite restaurant in town.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : De Hoef, Woerden Accomplished : 16 miles / 26 km, elevation gain: 220 feet / 67 meters Accommodations : Stadshotel Woerden

Having a Goed Time in Gouda

This morning, we’ll have a typical Dutch breakfast of wentelteefjes (French toast)—perfect fuel for a day of riding! We’re headed to the city of Gouda: synonymous with its cheese, of course, but also known for tasty, sweet s troopwafels and stunning 15th-century Gothic architecture. Cycle on verdant country lanes and typical Dutch polders (dike-enclosed lowlands), followed by a snack stop in a picturesque town along the route. Once we roll into Gouda, switch gears for a scavenger hunt that feels like a game of real-life Pac-Man in the city’s labyrinthine streets. Lunch is served at a favorite local restaurant before we head back to the hotel—either by van or on the bike, if you’re interested in some extra miles. For dinner, we’ll head to our guides’ favorite restaurant in Woerden, a city sandwiched between Amsterdam and Utrecht.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Oudewater, Gouda, Woerden Accomplished : 16 miles / 26 km, elevation gain: 276 feet / 84 meters Longer Option : 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 456 feet / 139 meters Accommodations : Stadshotel Woerden

Utrecht’s Castles

Leave the countryside behind and wave to cows, ducks, and sheep as we cycle north to the vibrant city of Utrecht. We’re in the heart of one of the world’s most famous cheese regions, so there’s no better place to learn the trade! After a lesson in cheesemaking, we cycle to Kasteel de Haar, one of the most beautiful castles in Holland. The first buildings on this site were recorded in 1391, but in more modern times an extensive renovation was funded by the Rothschild family—their wealth has afforded painstaking detail and splendor that’s visible in every aspect of the castle’s architecture. We’ll have a picnic lunch on the castle grounds, then pedal the last eight miles back into the center of Utrecht to check into our hotel. This evening we dine together in Utrecht.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Woerden, Utrecht Accomplished : 15 miles / 24 km, elevation gain: 335 feet / 102 meters Accommodations : Grand Hotel Karel V or Mother Goose

Dutch Canals

Today we’ll trade our bikes for a kayak and paddle through Utrecht’s iconic canals for a unique view from the water. These famous waterways were man-made during the Golden Age to accommodate trade ships and transport, and we’ll follow them all the way to Fort Rhijnauwen. Built to defend Utrecht against attacks, the fort could once accommodate up to 540 soldiers and 105 canons! Our last stop is lunch at Veldkeuken, a restaurant and bakery serving hot, crusty bread along with organic ingredients grown in the onsite garden. Tonight, we’ll head back to Utrecht where you’re free to find a restaurant that appeals to your family for dinner.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Bunnik, Vroeg Accomplished : 4 miles / 7 km kayaking Optional Ride : 9 miles / 15 km, elevation gain: 148 feet / 45 meters Accommodations : Grand Hotel Karel V or Mother Goose

Windmill Loop

Our ride today will take us north, weaving alongside Utrecht’s many waterways and through the quaint villages that freckle the countryside. We’ll stop at a working windmill where our friend Joop shows us around inside and explains how these ubiquitous structures keep the locals’ feet dry by pumping water away from the lowlands. If you’re ready to keep pedaling, head back to Utrecht beside the Rijn river and enjoy lunch at a casual (but delicious!) local spot. Something truly special is planned for our final evening: our friend and local chef Laura will prepare a scrumptious meal in her home. As we say in Dutch, Smakelijk eten !

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Utrecht, Maarssenbroek, Loosdrecht Accomplished : 16 miles / 25 km, elevation gain: 338 feet / 103 meters Longer Option : 28 miles / 45 km, elevation gain: 600 feet / 183 meters Accommodations : Grand Hotel Karel V or Mother Goose

Vaarwel, Holland!

Following a leisurely breakfast, we bid the Netherlands dag and say goodbye to this beautiful country. Your guides will transfer you to the train station in Utrecht and see you off to wherever your travels may take you!

The Netherlands (aka Holland)

Bike-friendly haven

Holland bike tours.

This small country is packed with treasures. From the famed canals and art collections of Amsterdam to the springtime tulip fields, Holland is a bicyclist’s dream.

Revisit the Middle Ages in the country’s many surviving castles and grand estates. The walled towns of Holland’s trade routes are delightful to explore, and the maritime tradition is still seen in its quaint harbor towns.

Pedal on abundant bike paths and experience the bike-friendly Dutch culture. The country is home to many of the most popular bike and boat tours, where you can choose to enjoy the Dutch countryside from two wheels or from a boat deck on the extensive canals and waterways.

“A really enjoyable way to discover a new country. We were fortunate to have a very helpful tour guide, along with a first class chef providing excellent meals as well as very helpful barge staff. Our boat the Anna Anatel accommodated 17 guests and was an ideal group size for this type of activity.”

Family cycling holiday to the Netherlands

Have you ever dreamt of going on a family cycling holiday to the Netherlands, and riding some of the world’s best cycling infrastructure with your children?  It was a dream for Canadian mum, blogger and cycle campaigner Lindsay Bliek – and this summer it became a reality. Lindsay has kindly has send us this wonderful blog telling us all about it……

Sometimes dreams do become reality.

In June 2019, our little family managed to make the trek across the ocean and go cycle touring in the Netherlands for about two weeks. Not surprisingly — but, thankfully — it lived up to our expectations.

My name is Lindsay Bliek and I am a mother, teacher, and blogger at This Mom Bikes . Bicycles have long since been a big part of my life: as a teenager I dabbled in racing, as a young adult I embraced commuting, and as a mother I discovered cargo bikes and what they could do for our young family of four. Somewhere along the way, I learned that my favourite way to travel is by bike and I have always wanted to visit the Netherlands.

Lindsay Bliek Netherlands family cycling blog

My bike riding Dutch Canadian husband, Desmond, loves all things urban planning, including transportation and we had been dreaming and scheming for a while about how we could possibly go bike touring with our two girls, aged 7 and 4. We looked high and low but always came back to Europe, but especially the Netherlands because of its infamous infrastructure.

Planning for our family cycling holiday to The Netherlands

We started practicing on our home turf with small overnight bikepacking trips up old fire roads in the Rocky Mountains, close to our home in Calgary, Alberta, because that is the only car-free infrastructure that we have nearby to tour on. These little trips definitely helped to give us the confidence to travel as a family; we had a chance to figure out what set-ups worked with the kids, what and how to pack, and learn that our children really enjoyed travelling by bike and camping, too.

And then one morning I found a seat sale and a direct flight to Schiphol (AMS) and the ball really got rolling!

Family cycling holiday to The Netherlands

On one hand, buying tickets was easy thanks to online shopping; on the other hand, narrowing down and deciding where to go in the limited time we had was extremely difficult! We did know a few must-dos for our trip:

● We had family to visit in Dordrecht area ● I was intent on making it to the Hoge Veluwe and at least seeing the outdoor sculpture garden of the Kröller-Müller Museum therein ● We had more family to visit in Den Haag ● We wanted to see the sand dunes along the coast ● We decided that we did not really have enough time to do Amsterdam justice, and ● We were determined to keep things simple

We somehow got pointed in the direction of the long distance Landelijke Fietsroutes (LF) and discovered the Natuurkampeerterrein network , so that really helped us to narrow things down. With these tools and the confidence that we could very likely cycle somewhere between 25-40 kilometres per day enabled us to plot out a little route with Google Maps and a spreadsheet.

Lindsay Bliek Netherlands family cycling blog

We had a lovely trip. The Netherlands really did meet our very high expectations and touring with the kids was great. I set myself up with the expectation that it would be a fascinating experience yet a lot of work and quite tiring for me, due to all of the camping and moving about with two young kids, not to mention being unsure of how they would handle the jet lag. However, we found our rhythm and camping was a comfort each night with the same bed and within a familiar space. I came back from our two week tour feeling as rested as I imagine someone who reads books on a beach for their holiday does. I think that camping was a great choice with the kids, too, simply because they did get to sleep in the same bed each night.

Camping with kids on a family cycling holiday

As with most things involving kids, there was the odd hiccup, but nothing drastic and some events were fortuitously timed, like when my youngest got some sort of gastro bug and I tweaked my back running her to the washroom multiple times one night, so we checked in to a hostel for the next two nights and were blessed with tremendous thunderstorms each evening that made me feel quite grateful for having a roof over our heads!

Family cycling holiday to The Netherlands

Cycling in the Netherlands was so intuitive — once I knew what the shark’s teeth meant, at least! We had our LF route maps and hunted for knooppunt all day long, taking in the sights along the way. Admiring the beautiful architecture or the bright array of wildflowers in the median. Navigating to find a grocery store midday to gather whatever food we needed for the next 24 hour period. Easily finding a place to throw stones in the river while my hungry eldest ate her third hard boiled egg of the day! Exploring yet another fantastic playground or kinderboerderij! Seeking out our campground for the night.

It seemed to just ebb and flow. And there were enough route options, ample towns with grocers, campgrounds at attainable distances, and safe infrastructure that it was all a very enjoyable experience, even as a family with young kids.

family cycling holiday to The Netherlands - trailer and two children riding bikes

It took the first third or so of the trip to acclimatize to, but the most striking thing, for me, about travelling to a place like the Netherlands was, overall, this impressive respect for other, and this is evidenced throughout the country via infrastructure but also mannerisms engrained in law, i.e. the driver is always at fault if they hit a cyclist. As was said to us many times over there, chances are all road users, including people who drive, are cyclists at some point in their day or week or they at least know people who are, possibly even their own grandmother is out there. This systemic level of empathy was so refreshing and is something that I can only dream of and will continue to advocate for on my home turf.

How to plan a family cycling holiday to The Netherlands

Europe is a goldmine of family-friendly cycle tour routes and the Netherlands is a wonderful place to test the waters. We are already dreaming of going back and possibly even scheming a sabbatical year overseas!

You can read our daily journals, ogle at our touring set-up, and see our complete itinerary on my blog’s Netherlands page.

01 Welcome ride along canals to Edam and the polders of Beemster

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at Restaurant IJ-Kantine at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You can reach the IJ-Kantine with a 10 minute taxi ride from the city center or with a free ferry service from Amsterdam's Central Station. This former factory on the shores of the river IJ (pronounced similarly to "eye") in North Amsterdam has been converted into one of the most unique restaurants in town. After a short round of introductions, your guides will discuss the rules of bike safety and specific cycling tips for riding in the Netherlands before familiarizing you with your Trek bicycle and ensuring a comfortable fit. Then it’s off on your first ride towards the seashore and along the canals to Edam, well-known for its rich tradition in cheesemaking. Stop here for a sample, but don’t sit too long, as we have several charming Dutch villages to spin through on our way to Beemster and Schermer, both historic UNESCO World Heritage sites. Both are known for the low-lying land that sits below sea level, known as polders, which are bounded by dikes on all sides. We’ll cap off today’s ride with lunch at a local restaurant followed by a shuttle to The Hague, our home for the next three nights, which just happens to also be the home of the Dutch royal family!

02 Experience Keukenhof park, one of the world's largest flower gardens, and tiptoe through the tulips

Wake up to a great day planned for you in the Netherlands! After a delightful breakfast with your new friends, you’ll take off to the coast and ride through a "Dune Park" and picturesque coastal towns to arrive to the flower bulb region. From here, you'll continue through fragrant, colorful fields of tulips and flowers with our eyes set on the biggest and most impressive flower garden of the Netherlands, Keukenhof. Take a stroll and breathe in the floral air, as this garden is a sheer delight for all your senses, and truly a one-of-a-kind destination! Choose to shuttle or ride back along the famous Dutch canals to The Hague through the university town of Leiden, the center of the flower bulb region. This town is at once charming, historic, and important, known for being the birthplace of Rembrandt, and for having more waterways and bridges than any other destination in the country besides Amsterdam. Dinner tonight will be together in The Hague's old town at a charming, locally-celebrated restaurant.

03 Taste the famous Gouda cheese and visit Delft, home to Dutch Royalty

This morning you'll discover windmills, canals, and the Netherland's most famous food on today’s adventure. It starts with a 45-minute shuttle to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk. The canals, mills, and pumping stations of Kinderdijk are a testament to engineering that endures, keeping water under control for 700 years. Choose to ride around the windmills and then get up-close and personal with a visit to the museum mills for the backstory of these marvels. Then, it's off to Cheese Valley to taste the Gouda goods with our local friend and cheesemaker. Together we’ll learn the process of what it takes to make perfectly-aged, rich, delicious cheeses like Gouda. After the cheese tasting and lunch, it’s time to get back on your bike and head toward the cheese capital, the namesake town of Gouda. Stop here for a coffee then continue through rural areas and nature preserves to Delft, home of the Dutch Royal Family and Johannes Vermeer. This town is also known for amazing, hand-crafted pottery and an extremely vibrant town square. Stop and take in the sights before riding all the way back to our hotel. Dinner tonight is your choice in town, and your guides will be happy to provide you with their favorite recommendations!

04 Ride from the sand dunes and seaside of the Netherlands to the Belgian jewel, the city of Bruges

Are you ready to cross international borders by bike today? After breakfast, a two-hour shuttle takes you to Breskens on the Dutch seaside. Begin your ride along the scenic sand dunes, then head inland towards the distinguished city of Bruges. En route, pause at the picturesque town of Sluis, a charming village where you'll enjoy some time to explore and have lunch. From Sluis, you'll soon cross the border into Belgium and continue along a canal all the way to Bruges. This capital city of West Flanders is known for its unique look and feel, with plenty of cobbled streets, canals, and pristinely maintained medieval architecture. Tonight, we’re headed to the oldest family-run brewery in the area, De Halve Maan, where you can taste the unique Brugse Zot beer, which will taste extra-refreshing once you've conquered the 220 steps on your brewery tour! Tonight's dinner is on us as you set off to discover Bruges on your own, with Belgian mussels and other local favourites - ask your guides for restaurant recommendations.

05 Explore the Belgian countryside and visit the Atlantic Wall Museum

Fuel up at breakfast and prepare to explore the Belgian countryside with its black and white cows, green meadows, and polders. This day is yours to decide how to spend it best: You can either pedal through the countryside to the coastal town of Oostende and the unique open-air museum of Raversyde or spend the day in town and explore all the delights Bruges has to offer. If you decide to visit the museum, you’ll get an up-close look at an unimaginable living piece of history, the Atlantic Wall. This imposing structure, built from 1942 to 1945, spans 5,000 kilometers along the North Sea and Atlantic coast. It's a remarkable testament to the German defensive line, featuring over sixty concrete bunkers, passageways, observation posts, and artillery positions. Lunch today is on your own and you can decide to spend it before or after the museum visit, or head back to Bruges and seek out lunch options there. Either shuttle back to the hotel or ride back along the canals to Bruges. Tonight is a special, last celebration of our time together, as we salute our discoveries, accomplishments, and newfound friendships over dinner at a truly unique restaurant experience in Bruges.

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Amsterdam, Netherlands

What will charm you is the city's gezellig , that comfortable ambience that you usually find when sitting with friends. Apart from finding your cycling brethren here — in this city the bike is king — you'll find those cosy places where you can sit and chat with your travel partners, taking in the city that winds by outside your window. When you venture out, you'll have a hard time not running into one of the countless cultural and artistic troves curated here. The Netherlands' artistic nature is captured in the span between the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk. You will want to give this city a few days to visit and enjoy. In central Amsterdam, your destination is never far away, but also try renting a bike from the many on offer for an authentic local experience. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

The Hendrick's Hotel

This popular boutique hotel combines luxury with a high standard of friendly customer service. Rooms are individually decorated and all uniquely inspired and ornate. The charm of the hotel is enhanced by its location in a 17th century monumental canal house facing the IJ waterway that is just a stones-throw from Amsterdam Central Station and easy access to the main points of interest in Amsterdam. There is a shared lounge with a bar, and all rooms offer a sitting area and a private bathroom with rain shower. Guests will also enjoy the full English/Irish buffet breakfast.

Albus Hotel Amsterdam City Centre

The Albus is a luxury Dutch family-run boutique hotel. This environmentally friendly hotel with Green Key Gold certification offers 75 rooms, all equipped with an Illy coffee machine, design furniture, and modern wooden floors. They also feature top amenities such as a rain shower and bath robes and the redecorated corridors feature a selection of modern art. Located at the center of Amsterdam's Canal Belt, main city highlights such as Rijksmuseum and Dam Square can be reached on foot in under 15 minutes while the famous Flower Market is only a few minutes away. Senses restaurant, part of The Albus hotel, is a top fine dining restaurant for true food lovers.

Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam

Set in a former shipping house overlooking a canal, the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam is a century-old, 5-star deluxe hotel located close to the central train station. The rooms are designed in the Amsterdam School style (a variant of Art Nouveau) with warm colours and opulent forms. There are 205 rooms and suites as well as a chic Spa & Wellness center featuring a heated indoor pool, a fitness room, a sauna, and a hot tub. The hotel also enjoys a stylish French restaurant and a cozy bar.

after

After: Brussels, Belgium

Brussels has many charming and beautiful attractions, with deeply ornate buildings on the Grand-Place and the fish-and-crustacean overdose of St. Catherine’s Square. Stroll along and stop in for a drink at one of the many bars on Place St-Géry, or splurge on the trendy Rue Antoine Dansaert. Also consider extending your stay in Bruges, to see even more that this charming town has to offer, or visiting the cultural centers of Ghent and Antwerp, before making your way to Brussels. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel in Brussels:

Le Dixseptième

Le Dixseptième hotel is located in Brussels' historic center and behind the La Monnaie Opera House. Rebuilt in the 17th century, this hotel is a protected monument that once served as the residence to the Spanish ambassador and is now an opulent hotel where you can enjoy the beautiful woodwork and exquisite interior design, mixing a modern country style with featured antiques. Their classic rooms are spacious and some include private terraces. You can also enjoy their refined bar that features a terrace and fireplace, as well as their fitness room and sauna.

Warwick Brussels

Nestled amongst the cobbled streets in the heart of Brussels, the distinguished Warwick Brussels stands just next to the picturesque and world famous Grand-Place. Located just one block away from the Central Train Station, this 5-star luxury hotel is within a short walk of the renowned Antique District of Le Sablon, Mont des Arts, iconic Manneken Pis, and the city’s best restaurants and boutiques. Exuding old world charisma and a long tradition of first class service, this hotel serves as the ideal focal point to explore the best that the city has to offer. Soak in the history of the capital of Europe in their authentic Belgium Brasserie, Chutney’s, or over champagne in the Bubbles Bar.

Hotel Le Plaza Brussels

Featuring French façades, high ceilings, and luxurious tapestries, Le Plaza is an upmarket hotel located in front of the Rue Neuve Shopping district and a 15-minute walk from the central and lively Grand Place. The elegant rooms feature carpeted floors, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and some of the en-suite bathrooms have bathtubs. You can experience their ornate restaurant, Brasserie L’Esterel, and comfortable bar or take advantage of the hotel’s fitness room.

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days

• This was my first experience using travel agency for vacation and I couldn't be more satisfied. I highly recommend using Wise Yatra, they planned a wonderful trip that catered to all my personal needs. • First let's start with the location– Amsterdam is absolutely beautiful! My trip was only 4 days long but Wise Yatra made the most of it. They set up 3 tours within those days that gave the perfect opportunity to see a few of the key attractions within the Netherlands. One day was offered a walking tour through a popular local tour guide company. The guide was very knowledgeable of history and the downtown area, he was also very friendly. Another day offered the opportunity to see the Tulips, windmills and clogs through another local tour company. The company has coach bus accommodations to and from all attractions and meeting locations. The guide presented herself very professionally and also very knowledgeable of the history and attractions themselves. The last event offered through Wise Yatra was the canal cruise which offered an alternative perspective of the town via canal level. • Secondly, I could not ask for a better travel company to book through. Originally I booked this tour believing I would be joining a group. After realizing that was not the case, naturally I was apprehensive about moving forward with the trip. Associates at Wise Yatra reached out to me on a personal level to fine tune details… After expressing my concerns, the associates at Wise Yatra assured me they would be able to accommodate me as a solo traveler. My itinerary was made based on what I wanted, tours were upgraded from self guided to guided, my hotel was upgraded to a better location and I was able to stay in constant communication before, during and after my trip. They even made sure I made it home safe! Some upgrades came with a slight cost, some upgrades did not, however cost of upgrades were minimal and well worth it. The driver booked for airport transfer was local and very respectful. Also, all my questions about documents and information needed overseas were answered promptly and knowledgeable. All in all, Raj, Rachit, Nishchitha, and the rest of the team did a wonderful job. I look forward to using the Wise Yatra service again in the future.

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise) Tour

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise)

We had a wonderful time on this enjoyable cruise in The Netherlands. The itinerary was perfect for our family. The ship's crew were all fantastic: efficient, friendly, welcoming and helpful. And even the weather cooperated. My only (minor) concern was that the information about where and when we could board the ship was not particularly clear, especially as we were traveling independently i.e. we were not met on arrival and escorted to the boat). Fortunately, the public transportation systems in Netherlands are so efficient that this was not a big problem.

The crew, ship and meals were all very good. There was an issue with the wording of one of the tours that I paid an additional amount for and I will take it up with Avalon. Also with the room description I paid extra for the wall to wall windows. It was useless to have done that. Most of the time we were right next to another boat, or to a wall and there was no way we would even keep the curtains opened.

Netherlands Family Trips/Tours Reviews

The tour of Holland was wonderful. Our tour director was great. Our driver was great. The weather was not so good. I think the heavy mist and rain made me ill. It was impossible to find any cold medicine in our busy schedule. Fortunately I brought some headache medicine with me just in case I needed it. I did not want to miss any of the scheduled visits but I was anxious to get home to deal with the symptoms.

Tour director was great. Buffet dinners were not the greatest. Disappointing that porterage has been discontinued. Hotels are a bit out of the way and do not allow for any exploration once you reach the hotel in the evening.

The Netherlands' 11 best cycling routes and locations

Aug 20, 2020 • 4 min read

Mother and children ride bicyles past windmills at Kinderdijk.

Rides in Kinderdijk offer classic Dutch scenery © leoks / Shutterstock

With fabulously pancake-flat, scenic landscapes beckoning along every last dyke, canal, river and coastal shore, two-wheeling in the Netherlands is one of Dutch life's greatest pleasures (headwinds notwithstanding).

While the bike-loving Dutch practically live on their well-worn, beloved fietsen (bicycles) – cycling for visitors is a wonderful means of exploring and getting around. Bike-rental outlets are ubiquitous, and the country is crisscrossed with some 32,000km (19,883 miles) of cycling paths. Here are 10 of the country's best cycling spots.

Editor's note: Please check the latest travel restrictions before planning any trip and always follow government advice.

Amsterdam to Waterland loop

Twenty minutes from central Amsterdam, feel like you've step centuries back in time in Waterland. Cows, dykes, canals and lots of expansive green fields are on full display on this classic Dutch scenic route.

Bossche Broek

Immediately across the Dommel River from the center of Den Bosch , the urban landscape gives way to open meadowland in this 202-hectare (499 acres) nature reserve. It's laced with cycling trails and offers attractive views back towards the city skyline and ramparts. To access the area, take Sterrebosweg, the paved cycle-road that crosses a bridge from the northern end of Pettelaarsweg.

BTdutch-tulips-07201405-132441.jpg

Leiden to Bulbfields loop

The best time to take this route is mid-March to mid-May when the tulips and daffodils are at their peak and the ribbons of bold colors are astounding. But it's a lovely ride at any time, and especially good in summer when you can stop at the beach for a break on the sand and a refreshing dip in the sea.

Ooijpolder route

Cycle along the Waalbrug – the main bridge across the Waal River, Europe's busiest waterway – for breath-stealing sunset views of the old town, water and boats below.

Breda Border Loop

To get away from the city bustle jump on a bicycle and take the LF9 cycle path which meanders through pretty countryside following the Mark River. Visit Breda, a Belgian shrine-village then return through the Mastbos Forest.

Family with two children on bikes, Kinderdijk, Olanda, Amsterdam

Kinderdijk

Join the pedaling masses along the canal-side cycling path in Kinderdijk – an iconic World Heritage–listed site. This stretch of the Alblasserwaard polder encompasses two canals, 19 traditional windmills, a pumping station that's been repurposed as a visitor center and a dual pedestrian and bicycle path between the canals. Two of the windmills – the 17th century Nederwaard and Blokweer mills – function as museums, offering an insight into the past lives of miller families.

The length of the site and back is an easy 5.7km (3.5 miles). A cafe and ice-cream stands are dotted along the pathway. If you're lucky, some of the mills will have their sails spinning – a truly majestic sight.

Scheveningen

Ride north or south along invigorating dunes and Scheveningen beaches to leave the Den Haag crowds behind.

Traditional Dutch windmill along a canal near Alkmaar, Netherlands

Midway between Alkmaar and Edam, the village of De Rijp on the N244 is at the south end of several good rides along dykes that give an excellent feel for just how low the land is compared to the waterways coursing between the earthen walls.

Weerribben-Wieden National Park

A serene and mysterious landscape of canals, ponds and lakes, the Weerribben-Wieden National Park is the largest freshwater wetland in northwestern Europe. Its swampy 10,000 hectares contain centuries-old peatlands, bogs, reed beds dotted with different orchid varieties, forest and a treasure trove of wildlife. Enjoy it all on one of the many scenic cycling trails.

Family cycling through sand dunes in Vlieland, Netherlands

Frisian Islands

The crescent of islands over Friesland – Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog – form a unique natural entity and a distinct Dutch region. A natural barrier between the Frisian coast and the North Sea, they hem in the mudflats of the Waddenzee, a Unesco World Heritage site since 2009. Villages, polders and salt marshes fringe the islands along their Waddenzee shores, while swaths of beach and dunes lace the seaward side. Inland, expect ample forest and heath crisscrossed with hiking and cycling trails.

Sun, sea and Schiermonnikoog: which Frisian Island is right for you?

A private park for the wealthy until 1953, Vondelpark now occupies a special place in Amsterdam's heart. It's a magical escape, but also supplies a busy social scene, encompassing cycle ways, pristine lawns, ponds with swans, quaint cafes, footbridges and winding footpaths. On a sunny day, an open-air party atmosphere ensues when tourists, lovers, cyclists, in-line skaters, pram-pushing parents, cartwheeling children, football-kicking teenagers, spliff-sharing friends and champagne-swilling picnickers all come out to play.

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

The Dutch and Belgians are famous for their love of bikes. And that love of bikes has created an amazing network of bike paths and routes that extend throughout each country. Many of the paths we utilize on this trip are the equivalent of scenic byways, linking quaint villages and big cities alike. Navigating these intricate bike routes may require more attention than usual—expect some stops to ensure you're on the right track!—as well as increased attention to cycling etiquette, laws and traffic as you share the "road" with the many locals going about their business by bike.
