I love taking tours when I travel, and I take tours at home when I’m not traveling! Joining tours to explore where you live is like having a special date with a loved one to connect deeper and feel more appreciation each time. 

I consider myself an independent traveler, but I always include a dose of locally operated tours and experiences offered by locals to further explore whatever excites me the most about the destination. 

Asheville is a small city with a population of less than 100,000 – but it has a lot to offer! From its architectural gems and exciting farm-to-table food movement and beer scene to its epic outdoors and talented artists, there is something for everyone here. Asheville is also full of projects, nonprofits, and businesses that form a support network for our underserved communities. 

I’ve compiled a list of tours that reflect all aspects of Asheville’s identity. You’ll see options to explore our city’s history, outdoors , street art, food and beer scene , art shops, and our most famous buildings: The Biltmore House and the Omni Grove Park Inn. But no matter which type of tour you choose, you’re bound to walk away with a deeper understanding of this great city!

The Best Tours in Asheville, NC

1. get to know asheville’s landmarks by taking its most iconic tour.

The purple buses of LaZoom Comedy Tours represent one of the best tours in Asheville and are a city landmark. The first thing I saw when I first visited Asheville from Argentina, looking for a new cool place to live in the United States, was a guy dressed as a nun, riding a bike, and angrily screaming at a purple bus. I instantly knew this was the place for our family to move next. My kids had to grow up near Sister Bad Habit!

These “historical and hysterical” multi-award-winning tours mix comedy, history, and partying on purple buses guided by eccentric characters. The locally owned and operated tour company was founded by two street performers 16 years ago and now offers four tours. 

“Hey Asheville” is a city tour and vaudeville on wheels. “Fender Bender” mixes live music on the bus and beer tasting, making an original, fun Asheville brewery tour. “Ghosted” offers a haunted comedy tour, and “Lil Boogers” is their kid-friendly option (the others have age limits, so please check ahead of time). All the tours are dog friendly!

2. See Asheville’s Top Attractions on the Gray Line Asheville Trolley

The Gray Line Asheville Trolley tour is one of the most popular Asheville tours, and for a good reason. It offers an excellent, award-winning Hop-On Hop-Off Tour that the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County has endorsed. 

Visitors can listen to the live narration and get off the bus at one of the 10 stops (or all of them!) along the 15-mile route to experience Asheville’s breweries, shops, and the urban scene. Also, tickets are valid for two consecutive days!

This locally owned and operated business also offers a fun ghost tour, covering some of our most famous specters (we have plenty!), including the friendly Tim Burton-like ghost of the Pink Lady of the Grove Park Inn and the mystery of the Nazi agents based in Asheville.

The seasonal Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley Tour includes live music and Christmas caroling while driving past festive holiday decorations in downtown Asheville, Biltmore Village, and the Montford and Grove Park neighborhoods.

3. Explore Downtown on an Asheville Walking Tour 

This self-guided Urban Trail Tour is a free audio tour offered by the City of Asheville and is a great way to get to know the city’s history at your own pace. It starts at Pack Place Park and follows 30 stations marked by cool sculptures. 

AVL Free Walking Tours offers a tip-based Asheville walking tour that ends with a free scoop of ice cream at The Hop . Their haunted tour (not free) starts at the Riverside Cemetery in the historic district of Montford and goes all the way downtown. It’s the only ghost tour that covers this super interesting cemetery.

The Asheville Coffee Tour features six of Asheville’s best coffee and tea shops. It includes short stops at Asheville’s landmarks and lots of caffeine! 

The Asheville Music History Walking Tour explores downtown through the stories of Asheville’s eclectic past and present music scene. It covers the Moogseum (which offers its own tour) and the famous venue The Orange Peel , among other local icons.

Did you know that the Jackson Building, the Battery Park Hotel, and a famous restaurant host ghosts? Last Halloween, my kids and I took the Haunted Asheville Ghost Tour , one of the best Asheville walking tours, and we enjoyed getting a glimpse of the city’s past through these dark stories. 

4. Explore Downtown and Its Surroundings on Wheels

Winner of TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice Award, the Tukit Tour Co offers guided tours around downtown on environmentally-friendly, open-air six-seater electric tuk-tuks decorated with LED-lights and equipped with Bluetooth speakers and heated seats. They offer ready-to-go tours and private customized tours. 

The Flying Bike provides electric bike tours around town. The Winter Warm Up E-Bike Tour is perfect for chilly days, and it includes stops at two local restaurants, hot cocoa, apple cider, and a visit to the historic Omni Grove Park Inn. 

Asheville Adventure Company features a scenic Asheville e-bike sunset tour, perfect for photos all year round but especially in the fall. The e-bike tours are kid-friendly if you’re traveling with kids. 

I’ve never taken a Segway tour, but I might because every time I see the Segway riders around my neighborhood, they look so content and relaxed. Moving Sidewalk Segway Tours offers a tour that covers downtown and other areas, like Montford and the greenways in North Asheville. The tour is 10 and up, and training is included!

5. Tour Downtown Asheville while Drinking and Pedaling on an Amazing Pubcycle

Amazing Pubcycle is one of the most trendy Asheville tours. The pedal-powered (motor-assisted) trolleys and their festive, laughing riders are becoming a happy downtown landmark. 

The company offers different tours perfect for parties and celebrations, including fun bachelorette parties, but you can also book individual seats. Guests will bring their own and serve their own beer, wine, cider, or seltzer and drink it on a 15-person pedal trolley driven by a certified, funny, and charismatic tour guide. 

Clients are welcome to wear costumes and bring decorations to customize their ride, so you can imagine what a fun sight these bikes are. The most popular offer is the Pub Tour in downtown Asheville which stops at one of Asheville’s best pubs. 

Also, they’re now offering a Trivia Tour on wheels! Riders have to be older than 12. There are 10 pedal seats and room for five non-pedalers. Yes, you do have to pedal, so enjoy your drink and your workout!

6. Embark on an Asheville Scavenger Hunt Tour

This is a fantastic plan for co-workers, friends, or family! Asheville Detours offers personalized team adventures that will bring you around downtown. You’ll follow clues like solving riddles and unscrambling letters while enjoying tasty treats and drinks and participating in fun group activities introducing you to some favorite local businesses. 

Asheville Detours has four offerings, and they can all be customized according to your preferences: The Bachelorette Tour, the Authentic Asheville Detour, the Family Fun Detour, and the Team Building Detour. Each hunt is self-guided and lasts approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Some stops and treats include eating donuts at the beloved Stay Glazed, tasting honey at Asheville Bee Charmer, group crafting at Fired Up, beer and chocolate tastings, and a champagne toast and private tour at Momentum Gallery.

7. Learn about Asheville’s African American Residents with this Award-Winning Tour

Hood Huggers International’s mission is to “rebuild Affrilachia through art, environment, and social enterprise.” Affrilachia is a term coined by Frank X Walker referring to African Americans living in Appalachia. 

In this context, Hood Huggers offers walking and driving tours that take visitors through the past and the present of African Americans in Asheville. This initiative won TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award.

Two walking tours cover Eagle Street in downtown Asheville and Burton Street in West Asheville, and the driving tour begins downtown and visits different neighborhoods throughout the city. These Asheville tours cover the history of these communities, current projects, and visions for the future. They are aimed at visitors and locals alike. 

If you take these tours, you’ll learn about the history of Asheville, but you’ll also be supporting the economic development of Asheville’s African American communities and businesses. A portion of all proceeds through Hood Huggers International are reinvested in the community.

8. Get a Sugar High at French Broad Chocolate Company

French Broad Chocolate is one of Asheville’s favorite chocolate shops. Locals and visitors love stopping by the iconic blue building of the French Broad Chocolate Lounge in Pack Square and getting something sweet, from housemade bonbons and ice cream to cookies, cakes, and brownies, and a delicious selection of drinking chocolates.

All of the chocolate is made in their chocolate factory, and they offer a fantastic Bean to Bars Chocolate Factory Tour that covers an introduction to a cocoa farm, the company’s story, and an overview of the process of transforming cocoa beans into a chocolate bar. In addition, there are tastings of cacao in its different forms, including, of course, bonbons! 

French Broad Chocolate also offers tastings, so please check their calendar to see if you can catch one of them. This is an excellent tour for kids. I did it with mine years ago. Children under 7 don’t have to pay for a ticket.

9. Explore the River’s Arts District’s Shops and Art Galleries

There are about 200 studios in the 23 former industrial buildings along this one-mile stretch of the French Broad River called the River’s Arts District (RAD). There are different ways to explore this area, which is also home to excellent restaurants, cafés, and breweries. 

Each Saturday, Mountain Mural Tours offers a popular street art tour that departs from the River’s Art District but also includes downtown and West Asheville. You’ll learn about Asheville’s history while seeing some fantastic local art. Your Instagram account will thank you for that photo of a gigantic Dolly Parton!

Flying Bike Tours ‘ West Asheville River Arts District E-Bike Tour stops at some landmarks, including The Marquee, a design center where you’ll find pieces of art of all kinds, and The Peace Garden, an eclectic, beautiful community garden decorated with works from local artists using repurposed materials.

You’ll also love the free, tip-based walking tour offered by AVL Free Walking Tours and the concept of their photo stroll in the RAD, where you’ll relax while someone else takes care of the pictures in one of Asheville’s most photogenic neighborhoods. 

On the second Saturday of the month , there are special events in the RAD and a free trolley to tour the shops.

10.  Splash Around in One of the Four Oldest Rivers In the World

Some of the best things to do while in Asheville are to spend time outdoors, hike, enjoy the views, and play in the water. Did you know that Asheville’s French Broad River is among the four oldest rivers in the world? 

French Broad Outfitters offers a variety of fun French Broad River floating and kayaking experiences. You’ll love to see Asheville from a different perspective on a warm day and join locals in one of the most beloved Asheville summer activities. They also offer an e-bike Asheville breweries tour and SUP yoga classes.  

Asheville Adventure Company organizes guided whitewater French Broad rafting trips that are family-friendly. Wai Maina Asheville SUP Tours provides stand-up paddleboard tours and experiences that the entire family will love.

Zen Tubing will set you up with everything you’ll need to enjoy your lazy river float along the French Broad River like dozens of locals do on warm days. Of course, you’ll need to bring your bathing suit and sunglasses!

11. Take a Photo Tour to Polish Your Photography Skills (or Get Professional Shots)

Asheville Urban Arts Photo Tours offers professional shots in some of the most beautiful urban settings, including Asheville’s cool murals. There are three tours: Downtown Urban Vibe, the River Arts Tour, and the West Asheville Tour. 

The promise is to take you to “the most Insta-worthy art spots in Asheville.” You’ll receive a full gallery of ready-to-post photos in five days!

WNC Photo Tours provides private photography tours and workshops at the most scenic locations. You’ll learn how to take better photos with your camera or smartphone. Some of their options include photographing elks, a fall color tour, and one-on-one post-procession sessions. They also offer professional photo sessions.

Asheville Photo Tours ‘ excellent offerings cover vistas and waterfalls, private tours customized to your desires, and photographing the fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you loved your photo tour so much you want to keep learning, they also offer private coaching sessions to work with you to develop your skills and online photo critiques.

12. Walk, Ride, Kayak, or Float to Asheville’s Best Breweries

Asheville (aka Beer City , USA) has more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States. With an average of 28.1 breweries per 100,000 residents and 100 local beers, it’s no wonder this city is a paradise for beer lovers worldwide.

Recognized by National Geographic and TripAdvisor, BREW-ed’s Brewery Tours offers one of the best Asheville brewery tours. These informative, educational walking tours are guided by Cicerone-certified guides. 

These beer experts will take you to some of the best downtown breweries where, besides tasting the local crafts, you’ll learn about the process of making beer and how Asheville’s beer culture has evolved over the years.

Asheville Brews Cruise is Asheville’s original, 16-year-old brewery tour and promises “an ample amount of beer” in its walking and mobile tours. All tours are knowledge-based and include visits to three or four Asheville breweries, tasting samples, lots of information, and fun guides.

15.  Tour Asheville’s Iconic Biltmore Estate and Omni Grove Park Inn

Visitors with a daytime ticket to visit the Biltmore Estate or overnight guests can participate in the tours offered by the Biltmore . Some tours are self-guided and included with admission, while others have a fee. 

They offer bike riding, wine and chocolate tasting, and rooftop tours. The interesting Biltmore House Backstairs Tour will give you a glimpse of the lives of the people who worked at the house, taking you to the overlooked domestic areas. 

You can visit The Omni Grove Park Inn for the day at no charge (there might be a parking fee depending on the time of the year) and walk around the garden and the buildings, shop around, have dinner, and get to know the history of the most famous Asheville hotel. 

They offer a 45-minute self-guided tour covering the hotel’s early years, the arts and crafts-style furniture collection, and the visit of famous guests (George Gershwin, Harry Houdini, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and even President Obama have stayed here.). Bring your headphones!

From experience, we highly recommend the trolley for both visitors and locals . It’s such a great way to explore Asheville and get the lay of the land. You’ll enjoy the sights, hop around as needed and also learn a little while doing so.

There are ten trolley stops total, taking you as far north as the Omni Grove Park Inn and as far south as Biltmore Village. The trolley tour officially starts in Montford at the Asheville Visitor Center , though, as the name implies, you can hop on anywhere!

Below you will details on the stops along with information about each area.

Trolley Stop 1: Asheville Visitor Center (Montford)

The Asheville Visitor Center is a great place to begin the tour if driving in because you’ll find free parking at the visitor center . You can also pick up local brochures and coupons, as well as get ideas for things to do from the volunteers there.

If you want to stroll a bit, head down Montford Ave to check out the magnificent historical homes on the tree-lined street. You can grab a coffee or bite to eat any time of the day at All Day Darling before heading back to the visitor center for your next trolley stop: The Omni Grove Park Inn .

Trolley Stop 2: Omni Grove Park Inn

What a stop! Whether you are checking in for the night or just want to soak up the view, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Omni Grove Park Inn.

There are restaurants on the premises (make sure to make a reservation), nearby galleries and even an antique car museum. Trolleying in is great because parking can be a bit tricky at times. Don’t miss the mega fireplaces and beautiful views.

Trolley Stop 3: Renaissance & Four Points Hotels in downtown Asheville

After your visit to the Omni Grove Park Inn, you’ll head south on the trolley to the downtown Asheville area. There are actually four stops downtown, so no need to hop off at the hotels unless you are staying at one.

You will get closer to downtown’s shops and restaurants on the next few stops. But bonus points for these hotels being on the tour! It definitely makes getting around the city easier when visiting.

Trolley Stop 4: Pack Square

Welcome to downtown Asheville! There are so many great local shops and eateries here. When the weather is nice you’ll also enjoy the sound of buskers.

The first stop downtown is at Pack Square. You’ll love this stop if French Broad Chocolate is on your must-visit list. And if it’s not, well, add it!

The Pack Square stop is a great place to begin your downtown exploration. There is plenty within walking distance, including Stay Glazed Donuts (they are on our best donut shops in Asheville list !), The Rhu for a breakfast pastry or sandwich and Mast General Store for shopping.

Stop by Double D’s Coffee if having coffee at the top of a parked double-decker bus is on your Asheville bucket list! And if it’s lunchtime and nice out, Salsa’s offers an exceptional meal with great patio seating in the alleyway.

Just across the street from Salsa’s you’ll find Kress Emporium , featuring the work of over 80 local artists. It’s a great spot for fun jewelry finds, art, candles and things you didn’t know you needed but can’t live without.

The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is just a few shops down from Kress. It’s a great stop if you are traveling with kids and need to give them time to burn off energy. You can read about our trip to AMOS with our two kids here !

There are two more stops downtown before the trolley heads to the River Arts District. You can either hop back on the trolley at the Pack Square stop or do a walking tour and meet it again at a stop further down the line.

Downtown is very walkable and you’ll pass by tons of great shops and restaurants if you walk to the next stop, including S&W Market .

The S&W Market

S&W is a food hall and taproom with several great restaurants to choose from. It’s a great stop for groups because everyone can grab their favorite type of food! Trolley Stop 5: Haywood Park Hotel

If you decided to take the trolley from Pack Square instead of walking, you won’t go too far! The trolley stays downtown, stopping again at the Haywood Park Hotel . This is another area of town filled with shops, restaurants, coffee shops, dessert shops, galleries… ok, you get the picture. It’s also another great base for adventuring out.

Don’t miss the Woolworth Walk just across from where the trolley stops. It’s a two-story art gallery and emporium, complete with a nostalgic vintage soda fountain and diner inside.

You’ll find Malaprop’s Book Store just down the way, which is locally owned and filled with great finds. We love their selection of kids’ books! There are also a ton of other local shops around here as well as the iconic flat iron sculpture.

If you haven’t stopped in Moonlight Makers yet, take a quick trip down the hill behind Malaprop’s to do so! We love this gift shop because there are so many great local Asheville finds, as well as punny screen printed shirts, dishtowels and bags, clever mugs, stickers and unique gifts.

Across from the Haywood Park Hotel stop is James Beard Award-winning restaurant Chai Pani . Expect excellent Indian street food and a cool vibe. It’s next to Kilwin’s if you are in need of fudge, ice cream or other sweet treats.

Trolley Stop 6: Grove Arcade

There’s one more stop downtown before the trolley heads to the River Arts District- and it’s a good one: The Grove Arcade.

The building itself is a work of architecture and the shops and restaurants are just as charming. Inside you’ll find tons of local stores, like Asheville NC Home Crafts and the Mission at the Grove . It’s a great place to find a souvenir or two.

There are several restaurants located at the Grove Arcade that have outdoor seating along Page Ave ( Modesto , Burgerworx and Carmel’s Kitchen .) You’ll find great food and excellent people-watching! One of our favorite spots to grab lunch at the Grove Arcade is the Middle Eastern grab-and-go Baba Nahm . You can order online and it’s always fresh and delicious.

Summit Coffee is also located in the Grove Arcade. They are a roaster out of Davidson, NC and have great blends that are always a part of our mornings at home! Oh, and don’t miss Battery Park Book Exchange ! It’s a great spot to grab a book, a latte or a glass of champagne if you’re feeling fancy.

This stop is just down from Haywood Park Hotel and you can easily walk between the two. No need to wait for the trolley to make your way to the Grove Arcade,

Ok, that’s it for downtown stops on the trolley! Next up is the River Arts District !

Trolley Stop 7: River Arts District (North)

The Asheville Trolley stops twice in the River Arts District (RAD), which is great because there are two distinct parts of it. It’s walkable, though, but just…. bring your walking shoes if you decide to do that instead of taking the trolley! We’ll highlight a few things about the RAD here, but if you want all the details then hop over to our full guide to the River Arts District !

The first stop in the RAD takes you to the northern part of the district. Here you’ll find one of my favorites to peek in and watch in awe: the North Carolina Glass Center . Not only can you catch a glimpse of what they have going on, but they also offer classes , like the 30-minute make-your-own ornament or paperweight class. And, of course, you can shop there too!

In addition to the glass center, there are a ton of other studios and galleries around. We love checking out the working Mark Bettis Studio Gallery . There you’ll find paintings, sculptures, glassworking and more. Close by is the Hofman Studios , an artist-owned pottery studio featuring handbuilt porcelain that use antique lace to create patterns. All of the pieces are just so beautiful and unique there. It’s a great place to grab a special souvenir.

As far as eats and drinks go, Ultra Coffee has awesome coffee and breakfast sandwiches! The Bull and Beggar is also in this area, though it’s only open for dinner. Wedge Brewing Company has two locations in the RAD, one of which is in this area. They are open in the afternoons and feature a rotating list of food trucks. If you are looking for a grab-and-go lunch option, check in to the newly opened MOTHER Bread to see if they have a jambon beurre sandwich (ham and butter!) ready to go. They also make great pour-overs.

Explore a new area of the RAD

Now, here’s where you decide if you want to backtrack to take the trolley from where you were initially dropped off in the RAD or if you will continue your walking tour to another mini-part of the area. If you opt to walk, you’ll pass by several more studios and restaurants that you would otherwise miss. We recommend it if you have time!

If you decide to explore, take a stroll down toward the Lyman St traffic circle. Take a right there to check out CURVE studios or continue straight to get to another set of studios and eats. Fresh Wood Fired Pizza , Grind AVL coffee shop and PennyCup Coffee are all located on the way. Psst: both coffee shops are on our best coffee shops in Asheville list ! The restaurant Vivian is also located here and is a great spot for dinner or brunch!

You’ll have to turn around to get to the next area of the RAD, and then you can either hop on the trolley to get to the next stop or walk. If you walk, take the traffic circle from Lyman Street toward Riverside Ave. There’s a river walk there that will take you down to the next area of the RAD. It would be fun on a really nice weather day to stretch your legs, but you may want to skip the walk and take the trolley back. Either way, next stop: River Arts District part 2!! 🙂

Trolley Stop 8: River Arts District (South)

This is such a fun stop on the Asheville Trolley! Here you’ll find art studios, eateries and a ton of large graffiti murals. Woodworking, glassworking, galleries, antique stores and even an indoor skatepark are all within walking distance.

Riverview Station is a large, two-story building that features the work of over 60 local artists, craftspeople and entrepreneurs. There you’ll find jewelry, paintings, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculptures and glass. Marquee is also a great stop for art, antiques, decor and jewelry. Marquee has grab-and-go food and a taproom!

Speaking of eating, 12 Bones Smokehouse (ribs!!), Summit Coffee and Wedge Brewery ‘s second location are all located pretty close to one another in this area of the RAD. We love grabbing a beer at Wedge Brewery at Foundation and a burger from the Chop Shop food truck there. A+ beer, burgers and outdoor seating! Unlike the rotating food truck vendor list at Wedge Brewery at Wedge Studios (north RAD), their Foundation location features the Chop Shop’s truck daily. Further south, you’ll find Rosabees and Plēb Urban Winery .

Whew, what a day so far! Next up: Biltmore Village! Well, kind of….

Trolley Stop 9: DoubleTree Biltmore Village

No need to hop off at the DoubleTree stop unless you are staying at the property! I really do love that the trolley stops at several hotels along the way- it makes it so easy for visitors.

Trolley Stop 10: Biltmore Village

Alright so here’s the real stop for Biltmore Village. You’ll be dropped off right in front of the Olde World Christmas Shop , so be prepared to feel festive.

Biltmore Village is a historic area and just as charming as can be! It’s across from the Biltmore Estate entrance and was originally built to house the employees. Today it is full of shopping and dining opportunities. You’ll find everything from local shops like Dogwood Darlings Children’s Boutique and Provisions Mercantile to bigger stores like Williams-Sonoma and Lululemon . Finch and Well-Bred are both great places to pop in for an afternoon treat, and Cantina has excellent Mexican food!

That’s a wrap!

What a day! This is the last stop of the tour before the trolley heads back to the Asheville Visitor Center in Montford. And then you can do it all again!

Speaking of, did you know your ticket is good for TWO days on the trolley ? This is awesome if you missed something and want to circle back or maybe you just want to try different restaurants this time around. Having two days definitely takes the pressure off of needing to see it all the first time.

The Trolley schedule changes with the season, so make sure to check their site for the most up-to-date info. Below is the schedule as of winter 2023. The exact hours for each stop are listed on their site !

• January-February: Monday, Thursday-Saturday (limited schedule)
• March : daily (limited schedule)
• April-October : daily (full schedule)
• November-December : daily (limited schedule)

They do not offer tours on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Asheville Holiday Parade Day (November 18, 2023), Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

As of winter 2023, child tickets (ages 5-11 years) are $15 and adult tickets are $37. These prices include TWO DAYS and unlimited hop-on/hop-off privileges. Children under 5 ride free.

Are you local to Asheville? Check out the Gray Line’s Ambassador Pass program where locals ride free with the purchase of 2 adult full-fare tickets. This is a great option if you have visitors in town and want to show them around. Full details on their ambassador program can be found on their site .

Short on time but still want to ride the trolley ? Purchase an overview tour ticket instead of the hop-on/hop-off one! The overview tour offers a complete tour of Asheville without hop-on/hop-off privileges. Overview tickets are $32 for adults and $14 for children and must be purchased at the Asheville Visitor Center.

Yes! Kids under 5 ride free and those between 5 and 11 are $15 each. This price includes two days.

Kind of . Service dogs are, of course, welcome to ride! Dogs under 25 pounds and up to date on their vaccinations can also ride in their owner’s laps. According to their site , passengers with pet dogs can only get off at the Omni Grove Park Inn if they are guests there.

Face masks are optional for all tour guests.

What's a groovy tour?

A fun-filled vintage van ride, with expertly curated 60s and 70s music. You will travel in and around Downtown Asheville and based on passenger input we tailor the drive through varied sights and attractions, from the river Arts district, to Grove Park, to funky West Asheville, as well as the many beautiful (and hip!) neighborhoods adjacent to downtown.

Our History

Having lived and worked as a physical therapist in Asheville for 30 years, I found myself, like many other healthcare professionals, overwhelmed and “burning out” as the COVID 19 pandemic ravaged our community. Increasingly, I found myself waking up with the same thought, that I loved what I did but  that maybe it was someone else’s turn to take care of my patients. I decided to open up a new chapter in my life. The idea of operating a groovy bus tour business in Asheville wasn’t a new one, just one that I hadn’t given myself permission to explore as a real business. I think you can understand how “real life “ of kids, jobs, mortgages often put “dreams” on the back burner. 

But I made a decision to follow this long held dream. My wife had seen me look at 1000s of VW buses for sale without buying one and heard endless stories of how much I loved driving the 1972 VW camper I had when the kids were young. Well I finally made the leap, bought a beautifully restored 1974 VW bus and now I am “all-in”.  The “destination” is to develop a successful business, but it’s the journey that lifts my soul everyday and that is everything to me at this point in my life. I am definitely “in the groove” and if you want that same groovy feeling, the Groovy Bus can take you there too..

E bikes are the best way to see Asheville without a doubt. They are quiet, smooth, and with minimal effort, you can cover a lot of ground in very little time. Torin and his staff are safety conscious. I felt cared for and looked after throughout the entire ride.

Great experience! The guide gave us a 20-minute overview on how to operate the bikes and gave us a couple of recommendations for rides.. we never got off the bikes! It was enough time to ride all through Montford, downtown and West Asheville. Loved the experience, will do it again.

High times in the ’70s: A Jew in Asheville

Back in the ’70s, I lived in what was known as Seely’s Castle up on Town Mountain Road. This awesome architectural wonder, sitting right in the center of our community, featured huge rooms that were perfect for hosting charitable fundraisers. And of course everyone wanted to tour the castle, which helped boost attendance at those events.

In a previous installment in this series, I wrote about my trip to Israel immediately after the 1967 war and my momentary local celebrity afterward. At our annual party that year, one of my friends showed up, as a gag, dressed as Moshe Dyan, in full Israeli military garb and sporting the famous general’s iconic black eye patch. Needless to say, he was quite a sensation.

From Israel to Asheville

I mention this because it makes an interesting segue to the next recollections. At that time, Yitzhak Rabin, another famous Israeli general in the Six-Day War, was serving as his country’s ambassador to the United States. And in around 1972, he came to Asheville to participate in an international conference at UNC Asheville.

The Jewish community never missed an opportunity to hold a fundraiser: Rabin was invited to speak, and we hosted it at the castle.

The day before, the Mossad (the Israeli secret service) scrutinized every nook and cranny and even crawled through the tunnels underneath the castle to eliminate any possibility of an assassin or a bomb on the premises. For the next 24 hours, we had armed agents guarding the gate and the driveway, and lookouts toting automatic weapons were posted on the roof.

The event went off without a hitch. The ambassador proved to be a rather soft-spoken, stoic personality, but he was absolutely astounded by the castle’s beauty and architecture. After Rabin completed his presentation, however, I had one more surprise for him. I handed him some notes written in Hebrew and asked him if he recognized the handwriting. He said that they were his notes and asked me where I’d gotten them.

I explained that I had been in Israel at the end of the ’67 war on a United Jewish Appeal mission and that he had made a presentation to our group on the battlefield. Afterward, Rabin had discarded the notes, and I picked them up and brought them home as a souvenir.

He went back to Israel, served two terms as prime minister and was well on the way to helping craft a Middle East peace plan when he was assassinated by a right-wing Jewish zealot in 1995.

A memorable visit

In the early ’70s, my oldest daughter, a social worker, moved to Israel to assist immigrants who had settled there after being driven out of Morocco because they were Jews.

In the course of her work, she became particularly engaged with a poor Moroccan family who were living in cramped quarters in a tiny house. There were five or six children, and one of the boys, whose name was Shmuel Siso, had just finished his army service and wanted to make a short visit to the U.S. before starting college. My daughter asked if he could stay with us at the castle for a few weeks, emphasizing that he was a very special young person. I agreed, and Shmuel came to visit.

He was a skinny little dark-skinned young man with an extremely engaging smile and a million-dollar personality. Siso, as we took to calling him, was amazed by the size of the castle, which had bedrooms that were bigger than the house he’d grown up in.

He immediately charmed our beloved housekeeper, “Miz Beulah,” who promptly took the visitor under her wing. I would guess that he had never seen or at least engaged with a Black person before, but they became great friends.

He had boundless energy and loved to help Miz Beulah with her housework while they watched soap operas on TV.

Shortly after he came to us, Siso asked me if I could help find him a job so that he could earn some money in order to extend his tour across the United States. I asked him if he had any skills, and he said that in the army, his specialty was explosives, so if someone needed something blown up, he was just the man for the job.

Unfortunately, I didn’t know any such person, but I did know a woman who ran a very popular restaurant on Tunnel Road, and she said she could use a dishwasher.

Siso jumped at the opportunity, and he quickly became a celebrity. His fellow workers loved him, but they couldn’t pronounce his name, so everyone just called him “Seesaw.”

The owner of the restaurant was delighted with Siso, took him out at every opportunity and proudly introduced him to all her customers. Among them were some influential politicians. They, too, were completely charmed by this unusual Moroccan-Jewish boy with such a winning personality. Siso eventually went back to Israel, finished college and law school, got involved in politics and became mayor of Kiryat Yam, the seaside town where he grew up. He distinguished himself as mayor and was appointed Israeli consul general to New York and Puerto Rico.

Returning the favor

In 2004, I was going to be in the New York area, and Siso invited me to be his guest at the embassy residence. It was all so impressive: His chauffeur-driven limousine picked me up at the airport, and we spent two days exploring New York.

It just so happened that on the Sunday I was there, there was a Puerto Rican celebration, and Siso was taking part in it in his official capacity. We walked several blocks in the parade, and he knew and was recognized by various celebrities and politicians. Perhaps the most memorable were the boxing promoter Don King in his eye-catching convertible, and Hillary Clinton, who graciously visited with me and had great praise for Asheville and Western North Carolina.

But I still shake my head in wonder, thinking about how this scrawny little Moroccan kid — whose life journey improbably brought him through Asheville and who briefly became “family” to me — wound up holding such an important position and affecting the lives of Israelis and Americans alike.

Asheville Police searching for answers in 2022 homicide case

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Asheville Police Department said investigators are still searching for answers in a homicide case in which a man was fatally shot two years ago.

Officials said on April 12, 2022, 27-year-old Lamichael Shawn Carter was shot in a west Asheville neighborhood. He was found dead in the roadway around 11:30 p.m.

Despite ongoing efforts by detectives, crucial questions remain unanswered, leaving a family shattered and a community searching for resolution.

“My son’s death was a very traumatic event for my family and friends, taking a life is not a choice for us here on earth. Our time comes when God sees it to be”, said Wendy, Mother of Lamichael. “Our communities are being damaged and hurt because of the gun violence that is affecting our people in Buncombe County. We need to come together and support each other and love each other to heal each other. Please, if anyone knows, has heard, or seen anything that night or day, please come forward to APD. My family would greatly appreciate someone speaking up for my son who now has no voice.”

The case remains an active investigation.
