6 questions travelers need to ask before visiting Japan this year

On October 11,  Japan will finally open its doors to independent travel following more than two years of some of the world’s toughest border restrictions. The country is also bringing back visa-free entry for visitors from more than 60 countries.

Does that mean it will be as easy to visit now as it was pre-pandemic? Sort of. There are still some pandemic-era rules in place, and you might find that locals are still taking many precautions against the virus compared to other nations. Yet at the same time, there’s much excitement on the ground about the return of international tourism, with Japan gearing up to welcome visitors back with exciting new attractions and events.

Eating on trains, embracing bidets and more tips for your Japan trip

1. Do I need to pack a mask?

Yes. Face masks have been a norm in Japan since before the pandemic. People often wear them year-round to protect their lungs from air pollution and to protect themselves and others from viruses, infections and allergens. While Japan has no official mask mandate in place, you’ll find that many businesses still require people to wear one indoors; you’ll also see people with a mask while on a bus, train or taxi, or in any sort of crowded indoor environment. They’re an everyday item for many, and it wouldn’t hurt to have one in your bag or pocket at all times. If you forget to pack one, it’s easy enough to find a surgical-style disposable face mask in airports and pharmacies all over Japan.

2. Have I checked which entry rules apply to me?

Japan has a color-coded classification entry scheme for all countries, which will continue even after travel rules ease on October 11. The system sets out distinct rules depending on what country you’re entering Japan from. Travelers coming from a “blue” country – a list that currently includes the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, Mexico, Thailand and many EU nations – no longer have to quarantine and have the option to show proof of vaccination or negative test results before traveling. Travelers from “yellow” and “red” countries are subject to additional entry requirements, such as testing upon arrival and quarantine. You can view the complete list of countries and categories  here .

3. Have I downloaded the MySOS app?

MySOS is a smartphone app (available for Android and iOS ) that’s used to record your vaccine and health information for entry into Japan. It should help you get through airport security checks more quickly by being a one-stop shop for all of your essential documents. If you’re traveling with kids, their relevant information can be stored in your MySOS app, too.

4. Do I need to apply for a visa?

Japan will reinstate visa-free travel on October 11 for travelers from more than 68 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, Argentina, Singapore, Thailand and more . If a passport holder a country on the visa-waiver list, you won’t need a visa to travel to Japan if you’re staying for less than 90 days.

5. Should I reserve restaurants and museums in advance?

Japan has some of the most sophisticated, creative and celebrated restaurants on the planet. And for many travelers, its cuisine is one of Japan's biggest draws. Getting a table at the top spots has always been a challenge in the capital  Tokyo  (whether it's  Kozue for seafood, Tamawarai for soba, or the two-star Michelin Den , you generally need to express your interest well before showing up), and in cities like  Kyoto  and Osaka  – but since the pandemic, most restaurants across the country require advance reservation, a rule that hasn’t gone away even as the government relaxes its response to the pandemic.

Museums also have new entry systems in place as well, and you’ll likely need to book your spot before showing up. Check the website of the museum you wish to visit ahead of your trip to secure your preferred date and time.

6. What new attractions can I add to my Japan itinerary?

Theme Parks

It feels like there’s always something exciting brewing in Japan. While the pandemic may have paused momentum, it’s now full speed ahead for the opening of some much-anticipated new attractions. After the world's first Super Nintendo World opened in Osaka during the pandemic, the next big thing is  Ghibli Park , a theme park based on the works of animation legend Hayao Miyazaki set to open in Aichi Prefecture on November 1. Unlike traditional theme parks, you won’t find rides here: instead, you’ll walk through the dreamy, watercolor-style landscapes and architecture from Ghibli movies like My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle .

Earlier this year, Ishikawa’s New Prefectural Library opened, featuring 300,000 open stacks of books (and the capacity for two million). It’s quickly become a magnet for anyone who loves books, crafts, art and history, and anyone with even a passing interest in cutting-edge architecture. The building’s exterior resembles the pages of a book being turned, while inside you’ll find craftworks by Ishikawa’s master artisans.

Now that borders are open you can visit a new UNESCO site in northern Japan, open since May 2021. The Jomon Prehistoric Sites  collectively form a Cultural Heritage Site, at which you’ll learn about the culture of the indigenous Jōmon people across 17 archaeological areas.

Bullet Trains

Japan’s public transport system is among the best in the world, its jewel the high-tech, high-speed bullet-train network, which is continuously expanding. If you want to test a new route on your travels, the Nishi- Kyūshū line opened in September, taking passengers on a 41-mile journey between the famous hot spring town of Takeo Onsen in the northwest and the city of Nagasaki (gateway to the Gotō Islands) in just 23 minutes.

Japan's best food and drink experiences

If you’re in Tokyo, check out Okushibu,   the Japanese nickname for “Deep Shibuya.” This once well-kept secret within the shopping district of Shibuya  has now become a go-to zone for late-night cafe culture, as well as some really unique and creative restaurants. Okushibu runs parallel to the new rooftop Miyashita Park , and you can stay in the heart of the action when the new Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park opens in 2023. Expect a rooftop infinity pool with views across the park – and the city.

Japan starts visa process for restart of tourism as COVID worries wane

KYODO NEWS

Japan on Friday resumed visa procedures to accept foreign tourists, taking the first step toward increasing inbound tourism to help turn around its economy as worries about the COVID-19 pandemic wane.

The government is initially limiting eligible tourist arrivals to guided tours from 98 countries and regions deemed as having the lowest risk of infection, including the United States, Britain, China, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand.

Authorities expect full-scale arrival of tourists to start around late June at the earliest as it takes several days at least to complete necessary procedures such as entering applicants' information in a registration system.

tourist visa japan 2022

The easing of entry restrictions follows a step by Japan on June 1 to double its cap on daily arrivals to 20,000 and allow most to forgo COVID-19 tests and quarantine periods. The guided tour participants will be included in the arrival quota.

Since March, Japan has been gradually easing the rules, giving priority to foreign residents, businesspeople, students and returning Japanese citizens among others, while barring the entry of tourists.

"We will make efforts to restore tourism demand by balancing anti-virus measures, and social and economic activities," transport and tourism minister Tetsuo Saito told a press conference Friday, adding the first group of tourists is expected to arrive next week at the earliest.

Still, it may take some time before Japan reopens its borders to individual tourists as the government remains wary of a potential resurgence of infections, particularly as the country prepares for a House of Councillors election expected next month.

Under guidelines compiled ahead of the resumption of travel for tourism, Japan asks foreign tourists to wear face masks and take out insurance to cover medical expenses in the event that they contract COVID-19.

Travel agencies will explain that they may not be able to take part in tours unless they follow the procedures.

Tourists need their travel agencies to enter their travel information such as names, passport numbers and their place of stay on the country's immigration registration website before applying for and obtaining visas, which is expected to take five days or longer.

Major travel agencies such as JTB Corp. expect the first overseas tourists to arrive sometime between late June and early July as it will take some time to train employees and prepare for tours in a way that meets the new guidelines.

The government recently said wearing face masks is not always necessary outside, and it recommends people remove masks when they are more than 2 meters from another person, given the heat and humidity of the coming months and the increased risk of heatstroke.

The agencies will keep records of the tours, including places visited and where tourists sat on public transportation, and participating tourists found infected with the novel coronavirus will be taken to medical institutions swiftly.

The guidelines were announced Tuesday after Japan conducted test tours for inbound travelers from the United States, Australia, Singapore and Thailand. The Thai group's tour was suspended after a participant tested positive for the virus.

At Haneda airport Friday, a 46-year-old Brazilian man who came to Japan on a business trip to buy car parts, said he welcome Japan's policy change.

"Japan's antivirus measures are thorough. I want to come back here for sightseeing with my family on vacation," he said.

An official at an airline company said, "The two years of headwinds may finally be over."

Before the pandemic, Japan had set a target for 40 million foreign visitors in 2020 when it was originally scheduled to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which were postponed for a year.

The estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan in April was down 95.2 percent from the same month in the pre-pandemic year of 2019 at 139,500 people, according to government data released in May.

Business leaders have called on the government to gradually reopen to inbound tourists to help revive the pandemic-hit economy, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has given assurances that Japan will ease border controls "in stages" to bring them on par with other Group of Seven nations.

Naha and New Chitose airports, gateways to popular tourist spots in Okinawa and Hokkaido, will resume accepting international flights by the end of June. Currently, five airports, including Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports, can accept planes from abroad.

Japan Reopens to Visa-free Individual Tourism From October 11, 2022!

More than 2 years and a half!

The Japanese archipelago was closed to foreign tourists during more than 30 months / nearly 1,000 days: an unheard-of situation, especially for such a long time, that frustrated travelers and weakened many tour operators and travel agencies.

However, the wait is closing to the end: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on September 22 from New York that visa-free individual tourism in Japan will resume from October 11, 2022 . As usual, the country took its time to act; it is one of the latest countries in the world to reopen its borders to tourism, and the very last (and late) of the G7.

Let’s review all the aspects involved by this long-awaited good news!

🎌 When will Japanese borders will reopen to visa-free tourism?

Traveling in Japan without constraint as a tourist is possible from October 11, 2022 .

The Japanese government has been working on a borders reopening schedule since April 27 to help revive the economy. The reopening to tourism was very slow and gradual, but there are not any constraint anymore and anyone can travel freely to Japan.

Who can travel to Japan?

Anyone, regardless of citizenship , can go to Japan.

Most of people in the world regardless their citizenship can be admitted in Japan, but only nationals from the blue countries list can do so without constraint. This list is quite large, with 128 countries, including Canada and the United States for example.

For the other colors (yellow and red), some restrictions still apply, such as vaccination / PCR test before traveling, and quarantine upon arrival.

🛂 Is a visa required to enter the Japanese territory

No, getting a tourism visa is not mandatory anymore from October 11, 2022 : a valid passport is enough for any stay shorter than 3 months with touristic purpose.

Tourist visa had been reintroduced on June 2022 and it was necessary to get sponsorship by a travel agent.

From October 11, the visa waiver system between Japan and 68 other countries in the world is restored. From this date on, it will be possible again to stay up to 90 days in Japan, without tedious paperwork at the Embassy or the Consulate: you will just have your passport stamped upon arrival in Japan.

💉 Is Covid vaccine required?

No, being vaccinated against Covid is not mandatory to enter in Japan.

Regardless of the number of vaccine doses you received, you are likely to be admitted in Japan. However, if you got your 3 shots, you will be exempted from doing a PCR test before flying.

Note that having been infected by Covid does not count as a vaccine dose!

Vaccines recognized in Japan are:

  • Comirnaty (Pfizer)
  • Spikevax (Moderna)
  • Vaxzeveria (AstraZeneca)
  • Jcovden (Janssen)
  • Nuvaxovid (Novavax)
  • Covaxin (Bharat Biotech)

tourist visa japan 2022

👩‍🔬 Is a Covid PCR test mandatory?

A negative PCR test shortly before arrival is required only for travelers who did not get three vaccine doses.

The Japanese immigration asks travelers to prove they don’t have Covid-19 . Travelers must submit this completed form after doing a PCR test (with a swab in the nose) within 72 hours / 3 days before departure and getting a negative result. However, people who received 3 vaccine shots don’t need to do a PCR test.

PCR testing upon arrival in Japan has been scrapped since June 2022, greatly improving the procedures for leaving the airport.

Only Chinese citizens or people who transited by China in the 7 days prior their trip to Japan must do a Covid test upon arrival in the archipelago (and a 7-days quarantine if the test comes out positive).

🧒 What about PCR tests / vaccines for minor children?

Minor children don’t need to be vaccinated , and in some cases can be exempted of PCR test.

In mid-September, the Japanese Ministry of Health provided information about babies / children / teenagers traveling to Japan:

  • If the underage child enters in Japan with a parent who got their 3 doses, then the child is also considered being fully vaccinated, even if they are not. The negative PCR test before flying is therefore not required.
  • If a child under 6 years old enters in Japan with a parent who did not get their 3 shots, but do have a negative PCR test, then the child is also considered having a negative PCR test, even if they haven’t done it.

In every other cases, the underage child must either prove that they have received 3 vaccine doses, or provide a negative PCR test made less than 72 hours prior to departure to Japan.

🏨 Is there a quarantine for tourists arriving in Japan?

No, there is no mandatory quarantine or self-isolation after landing in Japan.

It is therefore possible to:

  • Stay a few days to visit Tokyo before going to Hakone , Kyoto or in any other prefecture in Japan,
  • Take the Shinkansen bullet train directly after landing thanks to the JR Pass, or,
  • Just make a stopover at the airport to hop on a domestic flight.

In short, tourists are free as birds as soon as arrival!

🔢 Is there a daily cap for travelers?

No, there is no more entry daily cap in Japan.

Since March 2020, Japan has implemented a daily cap for overseas visitors, that reached 50,000 in September. From October 11, there will be no daily entry cap in the archipelago.

For reference, in 2019, the last "norma" year before Covid, the Japanese territory welcomed on average ~140,000 daily entries, including ~87,000 foreign visitors (~80% were from Asia : ~25% China, ~19% South Korea and ~14% Taiwan).

🧍 Is it mandatory to take part to a package group tour?

No , package group tours were just part of a single test in spring   🌸 2022.

This test was conducted only for a few days overlapping the end of May and early June 2022.

📋 Is a travel insurance mandatory?

Yes , but most of travelers already have one.

Travelers must be covered by their own health insurance. This service is offered to Visa or Mastercard clients with purchases in connection to the trip (flights tickets, accommodation…) made with a bank card  💳 , especially if it is a "Gold" / "Premier".

Naturally, you may want to purchase a cancellation insurance:

tourist visa japan 2022

📱 Do I need to install a specific app to enter in Japan?

No , this obligation was lifted in October 2022.

During Covid, the Japanese government required overseas visitors to install on their smartphone  📱 :

  • MySOS to register information regarding vaccine / PCR test prior to arrival and save time at the airport in Japan ("fast track" system);
  • COCOA for contact cases tracing, but the app was discontinued in September 2022.

It is however recommended to register through Visit Japan Webto save time upon arrival in Japan.

As many Wi-Fi hot-spots have disappeared due to the Covid period, it is all the more useful to book a Pocket Wi-Fi in advance to make sure to always have an unlimited high-speed access to the internet  📶 during your trip:

tourist visa japan 2022

🤒 Is there a body temperature check upon arrival in Japan?

No , this mesure was discontinued before the first easing to tourists at the end of spring.

A health center for foreign tourists is based in Tokyo, and is the reference if a question or problem arised (fever, Coronavirus  🦠 symptoms...)

😷 Is masking mandatory in Japan?

Generally no , but some places may require their visitors to do so.

On a legal basis, wearing a face mask  😷 is not mandatory in Japan. However, in the wake of the reopening, the government allowed hotels  🏨 to refuse customers who would not wear a mask at their premises.

Regardless, wearing a face covering is akin to a social duty in the archipelago. Many Japanese wear one permanently, even in the outdoors. Thus, the Japanese government published a document to sum up all the situations where wearing a mask was a necessity. In addition, many places ( temples , shops, etc.) require that people wear a mask on their grounds.

Therefore, wearing a face mask as often as possible is not required but socially desirable, especially when indoor.

tourist visa japan 2022

🗾 Are there prefectures or places that are off-limits?

No , Japan’s whole territory is opened to travelers.

There is no geographical restriction for traveling in Japan, and the Japan Rail pass is still a convenient asset:

tourist visa japan 2022

🏥 Is it safe to travel in Japan in 2022 and 2023 with the Coronavirus?

Yes, Japan is one of the countries that best resisted against the Coronavirus . It is way safer to travel in Japan than in many other places in the world.

The spreading was contained since the beginning of the pandemic. With only 34 deceased for 100,000 inhabitants, the Japanese succeeded in protecting themselves thanks to basic precautionary measures:

  • The widespread use of sanitary face masks;
  • The natural social distancing; and,
  • An unparalleled civic-minded attitude.

tourist visa japan 2022

Moreover, Japan benefits from a solid and modern health system that can treat with great care the severe forms of Covid, as well as any other disease.

From May 8, 2023, the Coronavirus will be downgraded from Category II to a Category V disease, like the seasonal flu. Which likely means:

  • No more PCR Test required to enter Japan;
  • No more indoor face mask mandate;
  • No more sudden border closure.

❌ Are there places still closed in Tokyo or anywhere else?

No, everything is open as Japan has been resuming usual activities for a long time.

While there has been no lock-down in Japan, some museums or themed parks did close for a few weeks in spring 2020. Events (conventions, matsuri, sports competitions) may have been canceled, aired on line only, or postponed. We have a list of places closed at the moment, but most closures are not related to Covid anymore.

Now, the only difference with 2019 and the previous years are:

  • Wearing a face mask is sometimes mandatory to enter some places;
  • Staff may (seldom) take people’s temperature with a no-touch thermometer at the entrance of shops;
  • Hand sanitizer is often freely available.

But this measures are certainly not specific to Japan.

tourist visa japan 2022

🙇🏻 Are Japanese people welcoming to foreigners?

Yes, Japanese people have an unparalleled hospitality culture .

In Japanese, there is the concept of omotenashi and it encompasses the idea of welcoming the other in a broader sense. Moreover, the tourism industry has greatly suffered since March 2020, as well as the Japanese economy, all the more with the recent inflation.

Many Japanese are eager to welcome back tourism on their country.

💣 What is the impact of the war in Ukraine on the trip to Japan?

Direct flights last 2 more hours.

Since February 2022 and the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s airspace is off-limits to airways flying to Japan. Flights must travel by the southern route, which lengthen the flight  ✈️ duration for a total 14~15 hours for a direct flight (with Air France, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways).

Japanese airways’ suspended connections with Europe (except for London), resumed in early may. Other companies, like Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, are not impacted as they were already using the southern route.

💴 Is it more costly to travel to Japan after Covid?

Yes, unfortunately , due to several factors.

The budget for a trip to Japan increased due to:

  • More expensive flight tickets, due to kerosene costs, longer routes and the rule of supply / demand;
  • Accommodation also rose their prices to compensate the low revenues since March 2020.

tourist visa japan 2022

However, the Yen  💴 has been very weak for a few months compared to Euro and Dollar, which results in unexpected advantages for international travelers in Japan on services such as:

  • The must-have to order before departure: transportation Passes and Pocket Wi-Fi;
  • Private guides: airport guidance and / or bilingual private tours in cities or on excursions;
  • Tickets and admissions to temples, museums and other places to visit;
  • Restaurants;

Now is the good moment to buy Yens before going to Japan.

⚠️ How to postpone an already booked travel?

If your travel was scheduled by October 2022 included, you may need to postpone it .

Do not wait to secure new holiday dates as many travelers are in the same situation:

  • If you booked everything by yourself: you must contact each service provider (airway, accommodation, guide, etc.) to modify every items in your plan, with modification fees to pay;
  • If you booked a full travel with a travel agent: just contact them to change the dates and the agency will take care of all the modifications for you, usually without additional fee (unless you want to lengthen the trip, upgrade or add services).

✈️ How to plan a post-Covid travel to Japan?

It is possible to organize a trip to Japan alone or with a specialized travel agency .

If you have time but a limited budget, you can prepare your travel in Japan by yourself, especially if you use our many articles on Kanpai.

tourist visa japan 2022

However, the experience from the last 2 years and a half has proved that travelers who prepared their holidays alone had a harder time to postpone or cancel their trip.

While it might be a little bit more expensive, reaching out to a Japan-specialized travel agency offers a greatly enjoyable peace of mind as you hire an expert of the destination who will take care of everything:

  • Understanding your needs;
  • Organizing and booking according to what you want;
  • Postponing if necessary, with no additional charge; and,
  • Support if any problem arises.

tourist visa japan 2022

It also helps supporting the tourism industry, that was one of the hardest hit by Covid on economic level, but also the local economy as any good Japan-specialized travel agency is working with sister companies in the archipelago.

Step 2: Determine the Types of Japan Visa You need to apply for

There are a number of different types of Japanese visas which include an eVisa. Japanese Embassies and Consulates are the ones that provide and approve the visas and the application process for eVisa can be done online.

There are mainly three categories into which Japanese visas can be grouped.

  • Family Related Visas
  • Working visa
  • Non-working visa

Since we are talking about tourist visas here, the focus of this article is going to be on short-term stay visas.

Within the Category of Short-term ‘Tourist’ Visa, there are four different types you can apply for. Depending on the kind of visa you are applying for, you get to enjoy different privileges and validity.

  • Single-entry Visas: it is valid for 3 months upon the issue and it is not possible to extend their validity.
  • Double-entry Visas: it is valid for 6 months upon the issue.
  • Multiple-entry Visas: it is valid for 1 to 5 years but will depend upon the purpose of your visit as well as your nationality and the passport you hold. You get to enter Japan multiple times with this visa but your stay cannot exceed the 30 or 90-day period.

Step 3: Prepare the required documents for your application.

During your submission of the application, you will need to submit a set of legally certified documents too. You will also need to meet a few eligibility criteria which are crucial to receiving approval for your application.

Japan visa requirements

To apply for a Japan tourist visa successfully, here is a list of visa requirements that you need to meet.

  • Fill Application form Clearly and Correctly: You need to fill out the visa application form completely and carefully without any mistakes. It is a very strict requirement because even the tiniest error/mistake can potentially result in the rejection of our visa application.
  • Passport: You need to have a passport that has at least 6 months of validity and two blank pages.
  • Photograph: You need to provide a good-coloured photograph of yourself that has been clicked recently ( within the last six months) and not too long ago. This photo should be clicked solely for this application and not be used in any other place. Your photo should be passport-size (45mm × 45mm or 2in × 2in)  and of good quality. Check Japan visa photo requirements here .
  • Certificate of Eligibility (CoE): Some places, you need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility which is a must requirement for all non-residents of Japan to obtain. If you are applying without a sponsor, then it is important that you apply for it as soon as possible. Note: Certificate of Eligibility only require for study and work in Japan and not for tourist visa. Here is a link for how to get CoE
  • Birth Certificate: Sometimes you are also asked for a certified copy of your birth certificate, and you should have it handy just in case. This is mostly asked in Japan embassy in Philippines.
  • Tax Return: Another thing you need to submit is your tax return. But this also not a compulsory one.
  • Proof Of Financial Ability: You should be able to provide proof of financial ability so that it can be proved that you will be able to provide for yourself financially while you stay in Japan. Normally 3 to 6 months bank statement.
  • Certificate Of Financial Situation: You also need to provide a certificate of your financial situation for 6 months prior to submission of the application that is issued by your bank.
  • Marriage Certificate: If you are married and your marriage certificate was issued within the last year then, you need to submit a marriage certificate too.
  • Travel Plans And Reservations: You also need to provide a schedule and travel plans for the trip with your application. Such include reservation of the hotel you are planning on staying at, your itinerary and flight reservation details. You don’t have to book a flight ticket, that is not the requirement but having a flight reservation is what’s crucial here.

Requirements for tourist visa in Japan with guarantor

If you’re planning to visit Japan and have a guarantor, there are certain requirements you need to fulfil to obtain a tourist visa. Firstly, if your guarantor is Japanese, you’ll need an invitation letter from them along with additional documents as instructed by the embassy.

Additionally, you’ll need to provide proof of your relationship with the guarantor, such as your birth certificate or marriage certificate. Meeting these requirements will help ensure a smooth visa application process.

Step 4: How to Fill Out the Japan Visa Application as a Tourist

  • You can fill out the Japan visa application form both digitally as well as by hand. If you are filling this form by hand, make sure you use a black ballpoint pen and use a block letter. Don’t use erasable pens or pencils.
  • If a field doesn’t apply to you, fill in “nil”, “none” or “N/A”. and don’t leave it blank.
  • Print your application form on an A-4 size sheet because other page sizes are not accepted.
  • Avoid cuttings in your form. If it cannot be helped, use double lines to cross it. If there are too many cuttings and crossings, start over with another form.

Here is a sample of a properly filled Japan visa application form correctly. The number indicates the part which you might need guidance for:

  • If you have another name you are known by, for example, a pen name or nickname, write it here. In case, your name uses initials on your passport, write your full name here. Write N/A if none.
  • If you have immigrated and got citizenship in another country, write down your current nationality. If not, fill out N/A.
  • Please be very careful while filling in your passport number. Double-check it and make sure it is correct.

You can download the Japan Visa application here.

Step 5: Book an Appointment at Embassy or Consulate and Submit Your Documents

How to submit your visa application.

The entire process of submitting your short-term tourist visa consists of three main steps. The Japanese visas are provided only by the Japanese Embassy or the consulates abroad for the time being, and during this process, the following things are involved:

1. Find and Contact to Japanese Consulate or Embassy near to you

The first step is to find and contact a Consulate or a Japanese Embassy nearest to you. Contact them to enquire about the opening and closing hours as well as book an appointment. You can also communicate with them via email and correspond with them online. They give you five days, and you have to pick a date out of those days to book an appointment.

2. Submitting documents and going to Embassy or Consulate

Next, you have to submit the required documents along with your Japan visa application. Something that you must prioritise here is that you arrive for your appointment on time. In Japan and for its people, Punctuality is very important. That’s why you should try to reach the Embassy or consulate for your appointment five to fifteen minutes earlier rather than be late.

When you reach for your appointment, you are provided with a token/number, and when your number is called, you meet with the official in charge of your application for an interview. During the application process, officials typically do not ask many questions but instead focus on verifying that all required documents are present.

If any documents are missing or additional information is needed, officials will inform you on the spot. To avoid any issues, it is recommended to double-check all documents before leaving for your appointment.

3. Finally collect your passport and your visa

Then finally, after a few days, which is usually 5 to 7 days, you get an email regarding your application status. In this email, you are asked to pick up your passport and, if approved, to collect your visa too!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long is the application examination period.

The Standard processing time for your visa application is five working days. But for a number of reasons, this time can extend into weeks and even months. That’s why it is recommended to submit your application as early as you can.

How Much Does a Japanese Tourist Visa Cost?

When you apply for a Japanese visa, you are also required to pay a certain amount as a visa issuance fee. This amount of visa fee varies depending on whether you are applying for a single-entry visa or multiple-entry visa and your nationality.

  • For Single-Entry Visa: 3,000 yen
  • For Double-Entry Or Multiple-Entry Visa:  6,000 yen
  • For Transit Visa: 700 yen

Note: Sometimes, you may be required to pay a different amount or not pay any fee at all, and this depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Also, if you are not issued a visa, you don’t need to pay any fee.

It is recommended that you consult with the consulate or the Japanese Embassy you are working with to find out the fee you need to pay because the amount of such fee is subject to change at any time.

If you are consulting a travel agency (Japanese Embassy/Consulate General approved) for your visa application, you will be required to pay processing fees along with the visa issuance fees.

Another thing you need to keep in mind is that the fee is taken in the local currency where your Japanese Embassy or consulate is located. It is to be paid at the time of submission of your application. When done with it, you will get proof of payment as well.

Japan tourist visa for green card holders

If you are a green card holder and wish to visit Japan as a tourist, you may need to apply for a tourist visa before your travel. However, the requirements and process may vary depending on your circumstances and nationalities. Generally, green card holders may need to provide the same documents when applying for a Japanese tourist visa as non-green card holders.

Can a U.S. Green card holder travel to Japan without visa?

No, U.S. Green Card holders are not exempt from obtaining a tourist visa to travel to Japan. They must apply for a Japan tourist visa in their home country or current residence.

What is a Japan Tourist eVisa?

Launched in August 2022, Japan Tourist eVisa is the new program of the Japanese government to meet their goal of reaching 60 million foreign visitors a year by 2030. It is available for US citizens and Canadians, but these nationalities can travel to Japan visa-free again. The Japanese government is working on adding more nationalities to this list soon in the future.

The benefit of this eVisa is that it has simplified the visa application process. You get to finish the form online straightforwardly, and there is no need to visit an embassy or consulate for the completion of the application. All you need is to make the necessary payment via debit or credit card while submitting the application. After all submissions and approval, your visa will be emailed as soon as it is done.

Why was your application rejected?

Your application could have been rejected due to not meeting the criteria for Visa issuance. Some of these are often errors or omissions in the submission documents.

Why are you not informed about the reason for the Visa rejection?

You will not be provided with the exact reason for rejection by anybody because that information cannot become public due to safety purposes . So, if your visa is rejected, you have to restart with a new application and pay the fee again.

What should I do to get a Certificate of Eligibility?

To obtain COE, you need your proxy inside Japan to get a consultation with the Regional Immigration Bureau nearest to them.

Why can’t I reapply immediately after my visa application was rejected?

You cannot reapply your visa application after at least six months because the circumstances for which your application has been rejected wouldn’t have changed, and it would be a waste of resources and time for everybody. But after six months, your circumstances could change, and you get a chance to make your application a better candidate for approval!

What should be your bank balance for a Japan visa?

There is no explicit amount that needs to be in your bank account when applying for a Japan tourist visa. All you need is to provide proof of sufficient funds that indicates that you will be able to support your travel and stay in Japan.

What are the Covid requirements to travel to Japan?

Every person entering Japan after October 11, 2022, needs to provide a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid test certificate that was taken within 72 hours of leaving the country. Fully vaccinated passengers don’t need a pre-travel COVID-19 test.

If you are entering Japan from a country that is evaluated as having a high-risk inflow of COVID-19, then you will be required to stay at a facility secured by the Quarantine Station for at least 3 days. After 3 days, a COVID-19 test will be taken, and if the results come back negative, you can leave the facility but still need to spend another 7 days in self-quarantine. Please see some links useful

Is Japan allowing tourist visa now?

As of October 2022, Japan has opened its borders to tourists and has begun issuing tourist visas. This is exciting news for travellers eagerly awaiting the opportunity to explore Japan’s rich culture and beautiful landscapes.

How do I get a tourist visa for Japan?

To apply for a Japan tourist visa, you will need to submit a completed visa application form, a valid passport, a recent passport photo, proof of financial stability, and a detailed itinerary of your trip. You may also need to provide additional documents depending on your specific situation. Please follow the steps above

Is Japan visa free for US citizens?

Yes. For U.S. passport holders planning a short-term visit to Japan, a visa is not required. This applies to visits lasting up to three months.

How much money do I need to show for Japan tourist visa?

According to the Japanese Embassy, there is no set amount of money that you need to show for a tourist visa. However, you must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover your travel expenses, such as airfare, accommodations, and daily expenses. Having at least $2,000 USD in your bank account is recommended.

Important Note

You have to understand and keep this fact in mind that no matter how good your application is, there is always a possibility that your application might get rejected. No one can guarantee the approval of your application, whether it’s a lawyer or a travel agent or anybody else you are taking guidance from. If somebody is promising you this, then they are seriously lacking or a fraud. You can definitely make improvements to your application because it definitely increases your chances of receiving approval.

Japan is a great country, and I think everyone should get a chance to visit this incredible country. For this purpose, however, you might need to obtain a visa unless your country falls on the list of visa-exempt countries of Japan.

Visa Application needs to be filled out clearly, and carefully and you need to prepare all the required documents that need to be prepared prior to submission of your application, so your application process can run smoothly, and you have a better chance at getting approval for a visa!

I applied for a Japanese tourist visa as an excited returning Japanophile. Here’s how it went

tourist visa japan 2022

  • Japan reopens its borders for tourists. Now all that’s left for us to do is get that tourist visa. Or is that all?

tourist visa japan 2022

I don’t think there’s ever been a moment in my life when I’ve actually (and hotly) anticipated a day as much as today, October 11, 2022.

For nearly three years since this hot mess of a pandemic dropped on us, I have exercised as much willpower as I could to wait for the day when Japan, one of my beloved travel destinations, would finally open up to the world.

Yes, Japan took its sweet time resuming pre-pandemic border regulations (without the need for package tours and bookings via an agency) but now that the day is finally here, we can all heave a sigh of relief.

tourist visa japan 2022

That said, Filipinos still need to secure a visa —contrary to what some may have initially thought after Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made the announcement in September . But if you have a valid multiple-entry visa, then you may skip to the good part.

What are the requirements now?

Based on my experience reapplying for a tourist visa, it’s still pretty much the same.

First, prepare the necessary documents. For tourist visa applicants, here’s a refresher on everything you need (with my little notes):

  • Valid passport (with at least six months validity)
  • Visa application form to enter Japan
  • Passport-sized photo (4.5 x 3.5 cm) taken within six months then write your full name and date of birth on the back
  • Birth certificate issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) within one year (this isn’t required for those who have been previously issued a Japanese visa)
  • Marriage certificate issued by PSA within one year (also not required for those who have been previously issued a Japanese visa and only if applicable, of course)
  • Travel itinerary or your daily schedule of stay that includes the activities you will do as well as the accommodation/s and contact details. If you’re visiting friends or relatives, there are additional requirements that need to be fulfilled
  • Bank certificate that you can request from your bank
  • Photocopy of your income tax return or BIR Form 2316

And that’s it.

But in case you have a guarantor or someone who will shoulder all or part of your expenses in Japan, you will also need a guarantee letter on top of these basic requirements.

tourist visa japan 2022

Remember though that confirmed flights and hotel bookings aren’t required . But if you do have them already, go ahead. A certificate of employment also isn’t listed as a required document, but I threw it in as well for good measure. I can never be too sure regardless if I’m a frequent Japan traveler.

What’s my experience like?

Okay, I won’t lie. As soon as Prime Minister Kishida announced in New York in September that Japan will ease COVID-19 border restrictions and resume individual travel, I immediately gathered all my documents so I can apply as soon as possible.

Don’t worry though since documents are valid for 3 months from the date of issuance. So on a sunny Friday morning, I woke up bright and early and went to my trusty travel agency in Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati to submit my application.

tourist visa japan 2022

I was there 45 minutes early since they issued a statement on Facebook that they’ll implement a strict opening and cut-off system. After having watched scenes on TikTok of Korean visa applications getting out of hand and spilling over to footbridges and the main streets outside the embassy, I wasn’t going to take any chances.

But when I got there, there were no queues (yet). I was one of the first applicants to arrive. “Okay, this feels nostalgic and just like the last time I applied for one in 2016.” That tourist visa has since expired last year.

What I did forget though is to grab a queuing number as soon as the doors opened. Instead of being fourth in line, I was demoted to sixth. Fortunately, the agency staff was all fast (and diligent) when reviewing applications and documents. It didn’t take too long for this woman to call out my number and after several minutes of reviewing my and my parents’ applications, she blurted out, “Do you want to consider reapplying for a multiple entry visa?”

“I could. But I don’t have a letter of request with me right now.”

“I’ll just give you a request form. It’ll just be an additional P300 (a single-entry application costs P1,200) but there’s no guarantee.”

tourist visa japan 2022

In my head, I was like “That’s life for you. And for me. And for everyone else really.”

“Sure. I’ve come this far anyway.”

And in a span of 30 minutes, I was done. Unfortunately, I’ll need to resubmit my parents’ visa applications since the birth certificate I submitted (since I had the noble job of being their guarantor this time) wasn’t issued within one year. (NOTE: PSA-issued birth certificates have permanent validity as of August.)

So that’s one thing anyone should remember. If submitting a birth certificate as proof of relationship between the applicant (parents) and guarantor (me), make sure it’s issued within one year—even if the website doesn’t indicate it.

When everything is done and dusted, just wait. From my previous experiences, Japan visa applications took anywhere between four to five working days before they got in touch with me that the passport is ready for pickup. But who knows how long it’ll take this time around.

My parting thoughts

tourist visa japan 2022

Applying for a Japanese visa again after so many years felt great. Not just because I could be traveling again to one of my favorite countries but also for the thrill of retracing your steps that harks back from a simpler time.

Okay, that was cheesy.

Seriously though, this is just one facet of my potential Japan travel and that there’s plenty more hurdles for me to overcome. But at least Japan has since expanded the vaccines it recognizes to include those approved by the World Health Organization .

Anyway, going back to what I was talking about, I’m at that point in my life (read: age) in which things don’t come easy anymore in the memory department. There are gaps that need to be filled in my Japan memory bank, like remembering the process of navigating the city with my ICOCA card (West Japan Railway Company or JR West’s reloadable prepaid card that can be used on Japan Railway networks and most mass transit systems) or where to exchange the order for a JR Pass.

tourist visa japan 2022

And then there are the new shinkansen regulations such as the size limits and reservations for your luggage . The two that would affect me the most are that the total length, width, and height of the luggage must not exceed 250 centimeters and that they must not be more than 30 kilograms.

For someone who isn’t a light packer (overseas), this is going to be an issue. But I’ve found a nifty alternative in worst case scenarios. Then there’s also the fact that the most reliable timetable search service Hyperdia has been discontinued.

But then again, these are all part and parcel of the return to a country I have loved since I first stepped foot on Japanese soil.

Let’s just hope they want me back real soon, too.

Japan's Immigration Agency sets new guidelines for visa overstayers

Justice Minister Ryuji Koizumi said the guidelines were being revised to provide more examples of positive and negative factors for evaluation in deciding whether to grant an individual special permission for residence.

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency announced new guidelines Tuesday aimed at enhancing transparency around policies on special permission for residence for visa overstayers, as well as a new procedure allowing such individuals to apply for the permit during the deportation process.

The new guidelines will serve as a way to evaluate negative factors, such as the extent to which a person's prolonged illegal stay in Japan violates the immigration control order, while positively considering the following factors:

  • The necessity to protect the interests of children living with their families in Japan and the relationships they have built within Japanese communities, especially if they are Japanese minors, and if they are living under guardianship and care.
  • Whether or not they have sufficient support from future employers or other third parties.
  • A concrete risk to their lives if they are unable to continue medical treatment in Japan for a considerable period of time due to illness.
  • Those who cannot be deported to any country due to their “stateless” status.

Examples of negative factors to be considered would include illegal entry or entry using forged passports, the forging or fraudulent acquisition of residence cards or official documents, the illegal employment of other foreign nationals, violation of laws that incurred penalties, or engaging in acts of prostitution or having others do so.

But the decision to grant or deny special permission for residence is not solely based on individual positive or negative factors, the Immigration Agency said.

Justice Minister Ryuji Koizumi said Tuesday that the new guidelines would not mean the criteria for judgment had been changed but rather the guidelines were being revised to provide more examples of positive and negative factors for evaluation.

“Decisions are made comprehensively,” he said. “But each case is different with various factors at play. ...the guidelines are being revised to increase predictability.”

A legislative amendment that takes effect in June will — in addition to revising the guidelines — allow individuals to apply for special permission for residence during the deportation process. The justice minister, in approving or denying such applications, will also state the reason for their outcomes.

The guidelines, which were originally established in October 2006 before being revised in July 2009 , are meant to consider the best interests of the child or children or family unity, marriage with Japanese nationals or special permanent residents, as well as whether an individual is stateless, according to the Immigration Agency.

In 2022, the justice minister granted special permission for residence to 1,525 individuals.

Japan is launching a digital nomad visa—you'll need an annual income of at least $67,500 to qualify

If living and working in Japan is on your bucket list, mark your calendar.

Japan plans to start offering a six-month digital nomad visa at the end of March, according to The Japan Times . The Immigration Services Agency announced that to take advantage of the visa, digital nomads must make an annual income of  ¥10 million or $67,556.80 USD.

The visa will be offered to visitors from 49 countries and territories, including the U.S., Australia and Singapore. In addition to the income requirement, Japan also requires digital nomads to have private health insurance. Spouses and children will also be allowed to stay in Japan.

Japan will not provide residency cards to those holding a digital nomad visa and visas can't be renewed immediately. Visa holders can reapply but only six months after leaving the country, The Japan Times reports.

American travelers can stay in Japan visa-free for up to 90 days, according to the U.S. Department of State . To take advantage of this option, travelers need a valid passport and an airline ticket out of the country at the end of the 90-day stay.

Last year, Japan announced it would launch a digital nomad visa in an effort to drive tourism back to the country after the covid-19 pandemic. Japan welcomed 25 million tourists last year, its largest number since 2019 .

The capital city of Tokyo is one of the fastest-growing remote work hubs , according to the 2023 report from the Nomad List. The city saw a 67% increase in digital nomads from 2018 to 2022, according to Nomad List.

Conversions from Yen to USD were done using the OANDA conversion rate of 1 Yen to 0.00676 USD on February 8, 2024. All amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar.
