➜ Costa Rica

Offering a myriad of reasons to embark on a winter seafaring adventure, Costa Rica boasts lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. From the picturesque coastal city of Puntarenas to the vibrant capital of San Jose, there are several cities and sights to explore. Some cruise lines, like Windstar, will combine Costa Rica with neighboring Panama.

The types of cruises that typically sail Costa Rica range from large cruise liners to smaller ships , like Star Clippers . Some cruises focus on exploring the country's natural wonders, offering opportunities for activities like snorkeling , hiking through rainforests, and zip-lining. Others may emphasize cultural immersion, with visits to local communities and opportunities to learn about Costa Rica's rich history and traditions.

For those considering a winter cruise in Costa Rica, the primary port is Puerto Caldera (Puntarenas), located on the country's central Pacific coast. You can take a walk along the beach or stroll the Paseo de los Turista (Pedestrian Blvd) when your cruise ship docks.

While there are no overnight river cruises in Costa Rica, you can delve into the heart of Central America's rainforests, observe diverse wildlife, and immerse yourself in the captivating natural beauty of the region.

Two popular cruise options are the Jungle River Cruise at Palo Verde National Park and the Palo Verde National Park Jungle River Cruise, but these journeys are only a few hours long. For overnight sailings, look to ocean cruises that we have shared above.

Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate year-round. The winter season is December through April — also known as the dry season. It is the most ideal time to visit and is considered the high season for tourism. This is when cruises in Costa Rica are readily available when cruise lines reposition themselves in Central America for winter.

With its strategic location bridging the continents of North and South America, Panama serves as a gateway between oceans. From the world-renowned Panama Canal, a marvel of engineering, to the pristine islands of the Caribbean and the captivating biodiversity of the rainforests, Panama provides an ideal starting point for a memorable winter cruise adventure.

The primary port for a winter cruise from Panama is Colon (Puerto de Cruceros), located nearest to Enrique Adolfo Jiménez Airport. Various cruises provide an awe-inspiring journey through the locks of the Panama Canal. Others explore the diverse islands and coastlines of the Caribbean or head into the mysticism of South American history on expedition cruises that will take you to other Central and South American countries.

Winter is Panama's dry season, which lasts from December to April. Expect pleasant weather with high temperatures and little chance of rain. This means it’s very busy, especially throughout the Christmas and New Year's holidays. In order to guarantee availability, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and reserve excursions or attractions in advance.

Some of the most popular destinations include the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Barbados, and St. Lucia. Nearly all major cruise lines sail to this region.

Galapagos

Check off a bucket list destination when you head to the Galapagos Islands to explore one of the most remarkable natural areas on Earth. Since Ecuador — and the Galapagos Islands — are near the equator, it has a similar climate year-round, making cruising there during winter ideal. Head to the area that inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and see Darwin finches in person.

Winter cruises in the Galapagos typically occur on smaller expedition vessels to ensure an intimate and eco-friendly experience. These cruises often have expert naturalist guides who provide insightful commentary and lead excursions, enabling passengers to fully appreciate the unique wildlife and ecosystems of the islands.

December through May is the ideal time to visit the Galapagos Islands though they are a year-round cruise destination. These months fall within the warm season, and the ocean is clear and warm. Sunny days are broken up by brief tropical rains that keep the greenery lush.

Each island in the archipelago boasts its own unique features and wildlife. Explore the rocky shores of Fernandina Island, observing marine iguanas and flightless cormorant birds. Then visit Genovesa Island, known as the “Bird Island,” where you can see the red-footed and Nazca boobies, frigatebirds, and the elusive short-eared owl.

To access the Galapagos Islands, you’ll fly into Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador, and then take a domestic flight to the main airport on the island of Baltra or San Cristobal. From there, you’ll board the cruise ship.

Ecuador Coast

A remarkable blend of natural beauty, cultural exploration, and coastal charm, the Ecuadorian coast provides an ideal winter cruise opportunity. From November to March, temperatures range between 67°F to 50°F offering cool but pleasant temperatures.

Here you may cruise along the Pacific coast to see the city of Guayaquil, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Pacific.” Take a walk along the scenic Malecón 2000 boardwalk or visit Guayaquil's museums and art galleries. Then make a port of call in Salinas, renowned for its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and water sports activities. The town of Manta also provides opportunities to explore Ecuador's fishing culture, visit local markets, and admire the iconic Manta Bay.

Smaller cruises like Kontiki Expeditions cruise the Manibi coast, focusing on the exploration of marine reserves and coastal habitats, providing opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and encounters with unique marine life and birds, like Blue-footed boobies.

Cruises typically start from the main ports of Guayaquil or Manta. Guayaquil has its own airport making it readily accessible, while it's best to fly to Quito first, stay overnight, and then travel to Manta to reach the port of embarkation.

➜ Middle East

From magnificent modern cities to ancient ruins and desert landscapes, the Middle East offers a diverse range of experiences for cruise travelers. A winter cruise in the Middle East promises an immersive journey through ancient civilizations, iconic landmarks, and Middle Eastern cuisine.

The ports of call for cruise ships, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, and Aqaba, offer access to delve into the rich tapestry of the Middle East. Windstar operates fantastic cruises in this region.

Dubai is a popular starting point for many cruises in the Middle East. This iconic city, with an abundance of skyscrapers and extravagance, captivates visitors with its record-breaking architecture, luxury shopping malls, and plentiful entertainment options. Marvel at the city's iconic landmarks, such as the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, and the Palm Jumeirah, an impressive palm-shaped manmade island.

Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital, showcases a rich cultural heritage. It is exemplified by the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the cultural district of Saadiyat Island, and the unique architecture of the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Oman's main city, Muscat, is a city of breathtaking contrasts. Wander through the labyrinthine streets of the Mutrah Souq, soak in the beauty of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and explore historic forts, such as Al Jalali and Al Mirani.

Aqaba, Jordan, is a gateway to the fascinating ancient city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s also renowned for its stunning coral reefs, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving.

Keep the weather in mind during winter months. It is very hot and humid in the Middle East, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Plan for some indoor escapes to cool off in air conditioning.

Journey through time along the majestic Nile River. Egypt’s storied past is woven into the fabric of its ancient temples, magnificent pyramids, and bustling cities.

Starting in Cairo , the bustling capital, one can explore the renowned Giza Plateau, home to the awe-inspiring Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.

Two people on camels in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Cruises along the Nile often make stops at historic cities such as Luxor and Aswan, where ancient temples, tombs, and ruins await. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple Complex, and Abu Simbel are just a few of the captivating sites that can be explored along the Nile's riverbanks.

From luxurious river cruises to ocean cruises like Celestyal Cruises and its Three Continents cruise, you’ll enjoy expertly guided tours to historical sites and go on cultural excursions.

The primary port of embarkation for a winter cruise in Egypt is usually Luxor or Aswan, as they offer access to the most significant ancient sites along the Nile. These ports are well-connected to major international airports, making them easily accessible.

Winter in Egypt is from December to February and brings milder temperatures, making it an ideal time to explore outdoor activities. However, it can be surprisingly cool in the mornings and evenings, so be sure to pack layers.

➜ Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo, the glamorous city-state nestled on the French Riviera, provides a captivating backdrop for a winter cruise. Renowned for its unique blend of sophistication, opulent casinos, luxurious yachts, and stunning Mediterranean vistas, Monte Carlo offers an opportunity to indulge in elegance.

Beyond the city, the French Riviera beckons with its enchanting coastal towns such as Nice, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez. They are all known for their pristine beaches, charming promenades, and vibrant nightlife.

The port of Monte Carlo often serves as the embarkation point for winter cruises in this region, although it’s common for Monte Carlo to simply be a port of call for luxury cruises or smaller boutique ships. Mediterranean cruises often include multiple ports of call, allowing passengers to discover a variety of destinations along the coastline.

One advantage to enjoying a winter season cruise along the French Riviera is there will be fewer crowds due to the cooler temperatures.

A tropical paradise in the heart of the South Pacific, Tahiti beckons you with its breathtaking beauty, Polynesian charm, and a sense of tranquility. Tahiti's allure as a departure point for a winter cruise lies in its unmatched natural magnificence and the unique experiences it offers.

Cruises in Tahiti typically explore a variety of islands, each with its own unique allure. Bora Bora, known as the “Pearl of the Pacific,” entices with its breathtaking lagoons. Moorea offers a laid-back atmosphere, lush mountains, and opportunities for hiking, dolphin encounters, and exploring pineapple plantations.

Windstar cruise sailing ship in Moorea Tahiti.

Raiatea, the spiritual and cultural heart of French Polynesia, boasts ancient maraes (sacred sites), vanilla plantations, and the opportunity to sail on traditional Polynesian outrigger canoes.

Tahiti cruises range from intimate sailing yachts to luxurious cruise ships. Small-ship cruises in French Polynesia, like Windstar , often offer a more immersive and personalized experience, allowing guests to access smaller and more remote islands that larger vessels cannot reach. These cruises frequently feature expert guides who provide insights into the local culture, history, and ecology of the islands.

The primary port for embarkation on a winter cruise in Tahiti is Papeete, the capital city of French Polynesia. Papeete's Faa'a International Airport offers convenient access to the island. The primary port for embarking on your winter cruise is Vaitape, Bora Bora , the island's main town.

Make note that it’s the hot and humid season here from November to April and is outside of the tourist season. This may affect the operating times of local attractions.

➜ Southeast Asia

Comprising countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, Southeast Asia showcases a fascinating blend of ancient traditions, bustling cities, and spectacular scenery.

Southeast Asia has a tropical climate. The winter months — from December to February — generally offer dry and warm weather, making it an ideal time to visit.

The appeal of Southeast Asia as a departure point for a winter cruise lies in its incredible diversity and cultural richness. The region is home to iconic destinations such as:

  • Thailand's vibrant capital city of Bangkok, with ornate temples and bustling markets.
  • Chi Minh City in Vietnam, with its colonial architecture and bustling streets.
  • Ho and Singapore, a modern metropolis that seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, and Bali, a volcanic and beach paradise.

Hop on board a Holland America Cruise in either Hong Kong or Singapore or a Princess Cruise , typically departing from Perth or Singapore, to begin your adventure.

➜ Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand, two mesmerizing countries in the Southern Hemisphere that are a part of Oceania, offer unique wildlife and natural wonders.

Keep in mind that winter is actually summer from November to February in the land down under because it's in the Southern Hemisphere, so pack accordingly.

Australia is home to iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef, and the ancient monolith of Uluru (Ayers Rock). The country's coastal regions offer pristine beaches, vibrant cities like Melbourne and Brisbane, and the chance to encounter unique wildlife. See kangaroos, koalas, and the elusive platypus in Australia.

New Zealand boasts awe-inspiring landscapes, from the geothermal wonders of Rotorua to the dramatic fjords of Milford Sound and the breathtaking mountains of Queenstown. It's renowned for its Maori culture and warm hospitality.

Popular ports in Australia include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns. In New Zealand, cruises often visit ports such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, offering opportunities to explore stunning national parks and experience Maori culture.

The Caribbean

In early December and throughout the winter months, there will be lots of cruise ships heading south to the Caribbean . Most offer similar onshore excursions and activities from diving and snorkeling to liquor tastings. It’s an ideal time for a cruise in this region with hurricane season over while idyllic temperatures and sunshine are common.

Norwegian offers some great deals , including a 7-night cruise from Orlando (Cape Canaveral), renowned for its pristine beaches and coral reefs, as well as the island of Cozumel, home to some of the world’s best snorkeling and dive spots.

Alternatively, you might take the whole family on a Christmas cruise—Disney Cruise Line offers its 7-night Very Merrytime Western Caribbean Cruise and the ship will be all decked out for the holidays. Expect a magical atmosphere complete with a tree-lighting ceremony with Mickey Mouse, meet-and-greets with Mickey and other Disney characters as well as a Christmas party with candy cane limbo.

Insider Tip

If you’re hoping to book a holiday cruise, be aware that they’re typically some of the most expensive of the year with cabins in high demand. Some lines do offer flash sales or special promotions through loyalty clubs, so be sure to keep an eye out for deals and book as early as possible.

Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands are a bucket-list travel destination offering unique experiences that include close encounters with wildlife like turtles, sea lions and blue-footed boobies. They can be cruised year-round, including December, as they sit in a tropical location on the equator.

During winter there is typically less rainfall, while the beautiful scenery is frequently enshrouded in mist, providing a truly magical atmosphere. You may be able to spot humpback and blue whales before they migrate, too.

Lindblad Expeditions, allied with National Geographic, is one of the top adventure travel cruise lines that can take you to the archipelago. It offers a 9-night Galápagos Island cruise round trip from Guayaquil on the National Geographic Endeavor II which comes equipped with Zodiacs, paddleboards and kayaks for exploring closer to the shoreline. Interpretive walks on the islands are led by naturalists for witnessing interactions between the animals while learning about them.

Lindblad is a great cruise line for families who want to cruise the Galapagos with its new National Geographic Global Explorers program allowing younger travelers to explore like scientists while learning all about the stories of these legendary islands.

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is one of the best December cruise destinations as you won’t have to battle the high heat, sticky humidity and heavy rainfall that monsoon season often brings.

One great itinerary option is the Timeless Wonders of Vietnam , Cambodia & the Mekong River from Uniworld River Cruises (cruising the stretch from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City). You’ll be able to gaze up at remarkable Hindu temples, catch the famous sunrise over ancient Angkor Wat, experience authentic daily life along the Mekong as you visit with village elders, and explore the lively floating market. Christmas Market River Cruises in Europe

December is not only about escaping to warm destinations; it's also a magical time to immerse oneself in the festive spirit of Europe's Christmas markets. There's no better way to experience the old-world charm of these markets than on a river cruise.

Meandering along the Rhine or the Danube rivers, these cruises offer an enchanting journey through the heart of Europe, where cities and towns are transformed into winter wonderlands. As your ship docks in historic towns and cities, you're a short stroll away from vibrant markets filled with twinkling lights, festive tunes, and the enticing aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.

Viking River Cruises is a popular choice among travelers. Their 8-day "Romantic Danube" voyage, for instance, takes guests from Budapest to Nuremberg, passing through Vienna and other scenic spots. Along the way, cruisers have the opportunity to browse artisan stalls for handmade gifts, sample traditional pastries, and immerse themselves in local customs and traditions.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection also offers a delightful "Classic Christmas Markets" cruise on the Main River. Starting in Frankfurt and ending in Nuremberg, guests can revel in the charm of traditional German Christkindlmarkts, enjoy guided city tours, and partake in festive onboard activities.

While on a Christmas market cruise, make sure to try the region-specific delicacies – whether it's Germany's bratwurst, Austria's apple strudel, or Hungary's chimney cake. And don’t forget to sip on a cup of glühwein (mulled wine) to warm up on those chilly nights.

While the above are some of the best cruise destinations in December, there are so many more to choose from—our list merely scratches the surface. For more information, call a CruiseInsider travel expert today at 1 (877) 734-6858.

8 Cruises Offer Respite From the Winter Blahs

Among the ships sailing this season is the new Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship. But you can go smaller on itineraries that range from the Caribbean to the South Pacific.

A colorful illustration depicts a cruise ship, tinted blue, green and yellow, silhouetted against a neon pink and orange sky, with streaks of colorful ribbon-like lines emanating from it. The ship is on a bright turquoise sea, and in the foreground is a blue palm tree, green and blue tropical leaves, and pink, yellow and red tropical flowers.

By Ceylan Yeginsu

As winter sets in, cruise lines are offering a variety of warm weather escapes to the Caribbean, Mexico and far-flung destinations in the South Pacific and the Persian Gulf. This winter will see the launches of new ships and itineraries aimed at attracting a broad demographic of cruisers, particularly young first-timers.

Here are some of the most anticipated trips to sunny spots.

Icon of the Seas

Eastern caribbean and the bahamas.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest new cruise ship, with a capacity to carry more than 7,000 passengers, is scheduled to set sail in January, with a seven-night eastern Caribbean and Coco Cay cruise departing from Miami. While the 250,800-ton ship makes stops at St. Kitts, St. Thomas and Coco Cay (Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas), it may be hard to choose between land excursions and the countless onboard attractions, from the largest water park at sea to an immersive entertainment space where athletes will perform acrobatics under a cascading waterfall. With eight different “neighborhoods” — including “ Thrill Island” and “the Hideaway” — the cruise line says it will offer guests “everything they have ever loved about every vacation — all rolled into one.” Twenty-eight accommodation categories include family-friendly cabins that sleep four people or more, and a special three-story townhouse complete with an en-suite slide and a cinema room. Despite its size and features, Royal Caribbean says that the ship is the company’s most sustainable ship to date, powered by liquefied natural gas and energy-efficient technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Sailings from $1,577 per person .

The new luxury cruise line Explora Journeys invites passengers to discover an “ocean state of mind,” characterized by “calm, unity, elegance and joy.” The Explora I, which set sail on her maiden voyage in August and has a capacity of up to 922 passengers, resembles a superyacht with the interior of a high-end boutique hotel. It is decked out with more than 400 oceanfront suites, four swimming pools and nine culinary experiences. The all-inclusive voyages aim to bridge the gap between luxury and lifestyle travel, targeting people who enjoy high-end resorts but may not have previously considered ocean cruising. From December, the Explora I will set sail through warm destinations in the Caribbean and America, offering excursions to rainforests, cocoa plantations, pastel-hued villages and coral reefs. The “Yachtsman’s Caribbean of Remote Harborages” journey, one of many trips offered this winter, departs Bridgetown, Barbados, in January for a six-night sailing that will take guests to lesser-known hideaways that are usually reserved for yachts in St. Lucia, Deshaies, Guadeloupe, and St. Barts, before ending in San Juan, P. R.

Sailings from $3,600 per person.

Carnival Jubilee

Western caribbean.

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship will set out from Galveston, Texas, in December, its first seven-day sailing through the western Caribbean, with stops in Mahogany Bay, Honduras, and Costa Naya and Cozumel in Mexico. The itinerary also includes two “fun days at sea” for guests to enjoy the ship’s attractions, which include a roller coaster and a three-story atrium full of dining options. The ship has 20 restaurants and 13 entertainment spaces in its “six zones of fun,” with activities for children, including a high ropes course, water park and mini golf course.

Sailings from $669 per person .

Norwegian Pride of America

While most Hawaii cruise itineraries last at least 14 days, Norwegian’s Hawaii Island tour visits the four main islands in just seven days. There are no days at sea, allowing guests more time to explore Honolulu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai with excursions that include tours of lava fields and zip-lining through tropical rainforests. The Pride of America, which has a capacity of 2,186 passengers, underwent a multi-million-dollar refurbishment in 2016. All the rooms were refurbished, the decks and entertainment spaces remodeled and all major features, including the spa and lounge areas, were upgraded. The ship has a range of specialty restaurants and a center dedicated to Hawaiian culture.

Sailings from $1,250 per person.

Azamara Quest

Chilean fjords.

Azamara is a small-ship cruise line that focuses on longer port stops, overnight stays and unique shore excursions. From January, the Quest, an intimate and stylish midsize ship with a capacity of 700 passengers, will set sail from Buenos Aires, and make stops at Montevideo, Uruguay, and the seaside resort town of Punta del Este, Uruguay, famous for its beaches, high-end restaurants and nightlife. Before cruising down the Beagle Channel, which is filled with marine life, including sea lions and penguins, the ship will make a stop at the Falkland Islands where guests will meet some of its 3,000 inhabitants. Then, en route to the Chilean Fjords, the Quest will stop at Puerto Chacabuco, in southern Chile, offering treks by foot and horseback through forests, rivers, waterfalls and wooded mountains. There are also opportunities to explore the snowcapped volcanoes of Puerto Montt, the capital of Chile’s Lake District, before disembarking on day 16 in San Antonio, Chile.

Sailings from $2,812 per person.

Celebrity Solstice

Vietnam and thailand.

While Celebrity just launched its newest ship, the Ascent, with itineraries in the Caribbean, the line’s Asia cruises are still among the most popular winter escapes for those willing to travel farther afield. Setting out from Hong Kong, the Celebrity Solstice’s 12-night cruise will sail to Hanoi, Vietnam, making an overnight stop at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay, to allow time to trek around the mountains of Sapa before exploring the rich culture of the country’s capital. The next stop is Hue and Da Nang, filled with temples, pagodas, palaces and tombs. During the second half of the sailing, the ship makes an overnight stop in Bangkok, followed by a visit to the tropical island of Koh Samui. The cruise ends in Singapore, which, beyond its skyscrapers and megamalls, has a rich cultural heritage and one of the best airports in the world from which to fly back home.

Sailings from $694 per person.

Oceania Regatta

Auckland, new zealand, to papeete, tahiti.

With so much to explore in the Pacific Ocean, it can be worth taking a longer cruise to cover more ground. The 36-day voyage on the Oceania Regatta, offers just that, embarking from Auckland with multiple stops at the country’s North and South islands, to Australia’s east coast and finishing in the sparkling waters of French Polynesia. The Regatta is a small, 684-passenger luxury ship that features a swimming pool, casino and spa. It has a fine-dining culinary program and aims to offer a refined cruise experience for people looking to escape the crowds.

Sailings from $12,295 per person.

MSC Opera and Virtuosa

The emirates.

While several cruise lines have canceled or altered itineraries in the Middle East because of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, cruises to the Emirates, which are relatively far from the conflict, have not been affected. MSC offers a range of itineraries and a selection of three-, five- or seven-night sailings on its Opera and Virtuosa ships. From skyscrapers, luxury shopping and glitzy nightlife to turquoise waters and warm sand deserts, there are many offerings for young cruisers, families and couples. On the Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar seven-night cruise, the ships stop at Sir Bani Yas Island, known for its wildlife reserve, bird sanctuary and crystal-clear waters. The island offers a range of activities, including safaris, snorkeling, kayaking or mountain biking. There is also a children’s water park and play area. The MSC Opera is a midsize ship with a 2,150-passenger capacity, and underwent a two-year refurbishment program in 2014, adding more than 90 rooms with balconies, a new spa and a water spray park. Best Winter Cruise Destinations: Cold Weather and Winter Sun Cruises

I absolutely love a cruise. I love them for many reasons but one thing I especially like is that they are a year round holiday as cruises move to position themselves for the best weather. In this guide we round up the best winter cruise destinations to help you find your perfect winter sun escape.

Table of Contents

Best Winter Cruise destinations

Note about this best winter cruise destinations guide : This guide is written with the Northern Hemisphere Winter in mind.

If you are looking to do your first cruise these tips will be helpful from booking to disembarkation!

Where to Cruise During Winter for Sun

If you are wondering “Where can you cruise in the Winter?” the answer is that are lot of places are nor only accessible by cruise in Winter but are actually better visiting during Northern Hemisphere Winter than Summer. In our option the best winter cruise destinations for sun are:

Australia

Cruise Ship in Sydney Port - one of the best Winter Cruise Destinations - the answer to where to cruise during Winter

Australia is one of the best winter cruise destinations in my opinion. It offers a great blend of ports from beautiful beaches to bustling cities.

If you take a cruise directly  from Sydney you will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful sailaways in the world as the main Sydney cruise port is in the centre of the city at Circular Quay and sails past both the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Top Tip : If you can get a room on the port side of the ship you will get the best views.

From Sydney you have option to go South to Melbourne, Tasmania and New Zealand (see below for more on New Zealand cruises) or Alternatively you could look at getting a cruise that heads north towards the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia and the tropics of the Northern Territory.  Taking a cruise in Australia between December and March will reward you with perfect snorkelling weather to explore one of the best natural habitats on earth.

South Pacific Cruise

What to wear in Bora Bora Packing List

The South Pacific is a bucket list destination for many people but it comes with a hefty price tag especially if you want to experience the overwater bungalows. A cost effective way of seeing the beautiful islands of the South Pacific is to take a cruise.

In some ways cruising to the South Pacific is a great idea as it takes the stress out of travelling between islands and you can to sample a number of islands on the same trip. For instance you can visit Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea  in French Polynesia all on the same cruise, whilst also ticking off tropical paradises like Samoa and Tonga along the way. You won’t get the overwater bungalow experience but you will get to sample more of the islands and experience the epic scale of the south Pacific ocean.

For more information and South Pacific cruise tips check out this post!

Please note : South Pacific cruises during the Northern Hemisphere Winter occur during the French Polynesia rainy season. You may experience some rain during these months but it is a tropical island after all and the rain is usually short and warm. For more information on Tahiti click here!

New Zealand Cruise

Cruise ship in port - tips for cruising while pregnant - babymoon cruise

If you aren’t bothered about 100% Winter sun but want a great winter cruise destination you should consider New Zealand. The New Zealand weather is extremely temperamental and the best comparison I can think of is taking a summer holiday in Scotland – chances are you are going to see rain but that won’t matter when you see the amazing scenery on offer.

I recommend taking in both a North and South Island Cruise if you can as each island offers something unique. If you like amazing scenery, outdoors pursuits, wine and beautiful cities then a New Zealand cruise might be the best winter cruise destination for you.

Caribbean Cruise

Tips for Cruising While Pregnant - How to Take a Babymoon Cruise (People in sea infant of cruise ship)

If you are wanting Winter sun then the best winter cruise destination I can think of is the Carribbean which pretty much has year round perfect weather. It really doesn’t matter whether you decide to go on a cruise in November, December or January the Caribbean will be great whatever winter month you travel in.

The first Caribbean cruise we took sailed from New York. It is bizarre sailing away from a city covered in snow and arriving in a tropical paradise a couple of days later.

Note: Cruises make a great Winter babymoon but if you are cruising pregnant or are thinking about getting pregnant you should look for Zika-free Caribbean beach destinations when planning which cruise you should take.

Canary Islands Cruise

La Gomera - Canary Island Cruise - why this is the best winter cruise destination

In Europe for me there is one main choice for taking a winter cruise and that is the Canary Islands, an archipelago sitting a few hundred miles off the west coast of Africa which is part of Spain and by extension in the EU Schengen zone. If you like volcanoes and black sand beaches then the Canary Islands are for you. There are seven islands in the Canary Islands they are

  • Tenerife
  • Lanzarote
  • Fuerteventura
  • Gran Canaria
  • La Gomera
  • La Palma
  • El Hierro

Like Hawaii and other volcanic archipelagos the islands of the Canaries vary in age and microclimate meaning tropical alive volcanoes leading to flattening arid deserts as you move from west to east toward the African continent. a cruise is a great way to experience several of these quite geographical spread islands on one trip.

Madeira – the best New Years Eve Cruise Destination

Maderia is another great Winter cruise destination and if you are planning on doing a cruise over New Years Eve I would strongly recommend looking at doing a cruise where Madeira is one of the ports of call as Madeira has some of the best New Years Eve fireworks in the world. Some years there are as many nine cruise ships docked in Funchal on New Years Eve specifically there to watch the fireworks. I can’t think of a much better place to ring in the New Year than watching the fireworks at Funchal from my cruise ship balcony room .

Middle East Cruise

The beautiful Doha skyline

Having being a long time Middle East resident both in Qatar and in Abu Dhabi I can tell you that the Middle East has the perfect Winter weather. Temperatures in the Gulf states in Winter tend to stay around the 20 degree mark making it much more pleasant to visit than during the summer months when it can top 50c.

You will also get to tick quite a few countries off your bucket list on your Middle East cruise as many will visit the UAE , Qatar and Oman at least with many others adding Bahrain as a stop.

Again if you are looking at the best place to cruise over New Years Eve you might want to consider a ship that docks in Dubai overnight on New Years Eve as this is another place that does New Year fireworks brilliantly.

Southeast Asia Cruise

Southeast Asia is another great cruise to take in Winter and another that will tick many big ticket items off your bucket list. Many of the South East Asia cruises stop at Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and some go as far as Indonesia. Winter is the perfect time to visit these places as in Summer the heat and humidity are much higher.

Galapagos Island Cruise

I unfortunately haven’t done this one but my husband did before I met him. He swears that his best ever New Year’s Eve was celebrating on board a Galapagos cruise. If you love wildlife but still want good weather then a Winter Galapagos cruise could be perfect for you.

Where can you cruise in the winter if you aren’t bothered about sunshine?

Antartica cruise .

One of the items on my bucket list is to visit all the continents including Antartica and one of the easiest ways of doing this is to take a cruise. The time that taking an Antartica cruise is possible is a relatively short window. An Antartica Cruise is best taken between November and March.

Taking an Antartica Cruise in December or January will mean you will get about 20 hours of sunlight and a wealth of wildlife to spot including whales, seal pups and penguin chicks.

Of all the Winter Cruise Destinations I’ve found this is the itinerary I am most desperate to go on.

Christmas Market River Cruise – the best cruise to take in December?

Best Winter Cruise Destinations - Christmas Market in Germany

I’ll be honest I have never done a river cruise but my mother in law makes an annual pilgrimage to do a Winter Christmas market river cruise. If you want to get in the Christmas spirit and looking for the best cruise to take in December then this might be the perfect solution for you. Just remember to pack layers and an umbrella!

For a complete cruise packing list click here!

Norway Northern Lights Cruise

Not many cruise lines offer this itinerary but you could join a Hurtigruten Cruise and head to Norway and the Artic Circle. It is definitely going to be cold but you stand a pretty good chance of seeing the Northern Lights which in my opinion is worth the cold weather.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruising During Winter

Where is the best place to go on a cruise in november.

The best place to go on a cruise in November is probably the Caribbean. You can find some great deals and the weather is pretty consistent.

Where is the best place to go on a cruise in December?

Anywhere on the above list is good to go on a cruise in December. However if you want to get in the festive spirit I would recommend a Christmas Market Cruise or a Cruise to Sydney, Dubai or Madeira if you love celebrating New Years Eve.

What is the cheapest month to go on a cruise? Are cruises cheaper in the winter?

If you are looking for the cheapest month to go on a cruise this will definitely depend on the destination as some places are peak season during the Northern Hemisphere summer. The best value winter cruise destination for me is the Caribbean mainly due to the quantity of ships in the area and number of embarkation ports.

Is December or January a good month to take a cruise?

December and January are great months to take a cruise so long as you pick the destination right.

Are cruises fun in the winter?

I think cruises in Winter are great fun. With the exception of the Christmas and New Year cruises you may find the crowds smaller and have a slightly older demographic (certainly on Caribbean itineraries). We went on a mid January Caribbean cruise and we were the youngest passengers by a long way. This didn’t bother us but if you want more of a party ship you might want to factor this in.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get ready for your cruises in December:

What to Pack

Your cruise packing list will largely depend on your destination, but there are some general guidelines to keep in mind.

For Tropical Destinations (e.g., Caribbean, Australia):

  • Clothing: Lightweight cruise clothing , swimsuits, sun hats, and beach cover-ups.
  • Footwear: Flip-flops for the beach, comfortable walking shoes for excursions.
  • Accessories: Sunglasses, reusable water bottle, and beach tote.
  • Protection: Sunscreen, insect repellent, and after-sun lotion.

For Colder Destinations (e.g., Antarctica, European River Cruises):

  • Clothing: Layered clothing, waterproof jackets, gloves, scarves, and thermal wear.
  • Footwear: Insulated boots and warm socks.
  • Accessories: Thermal flasks for hot drinks, lip balm, and skin moisturizers.
  • Protection: Hand warmers and sunscreen (yes, even in colder climates!).

Festive Wear:

Since it’s December, don’t forget to pack some festive attire. Many cruises will have themed parties or gala dinners.

  • Outfits: A mix of casual festive wear and a couple of formal outfits for special evenings.
  • Accessories: Themed jewelry, Santa hats, or other fun props for onboard photo ops.

Preparing for a December Cruise

Necessary Travel Documents

Ensure you have all essential documents ready and easily accessible:

  • Passport : Make sure it’s valid for at least six months beyond your return date.
  • Visas: Check the requirements for each port of call. Some may require visas in advance, while others might offer visa-on-arrival.
  • Cruise Tickets and Reservation Confirmations: Both digital and printed copies.
  • Travel Insurance: Opt for a policy that covers cruise travel, including possible medical evacuations.

Tips for Smooth Embarkation and Disembarkation

  • Arrival Time: Aim to arrive at the cruise port during the earlier part of the check-in window to avoid last-minute rushes.
  • Luggage Tags: Ensure all your bags have luggage tags provided by the cruise line. This ensures they’re delivered to your stateroom correctly.
  • Onboard Account: Most cruise lines offer cashless systems onboard. Set up your account online before departure or at the embarkation desk.
  • Disembarkation Details: Towards the end of your cruise, you’ll receive instructions about the disembarkation process, luggage collection, and customs procedures. Familiarize yourself with these details for a hassle-free exit.

As enchanting as cruises in December can be, there are certain considerations and potential pitfalls that travelers should be aware of. By keeping these in mind, you can ensure your voyage is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Weather Considerations

Even though December is ideal for many destinations, weather can sometimes be unpredictable.

  • Caribbean and Tropical Areas: While these regions experience dry weather, there’s still a chance of sporadic rainfall or even a rare late-season hurricane.
  • Antarctica and Cold Destinations: Icy conditions can sometimes lead to changes in itinerary if certain passages become inaccessible.

Tip: Always pack some versatile clothing options and check the weather forecast as your cruise date approaches.

Peak Season Crowds

December is a popular time for vacationers, especially around Christmas and New Year.

  • Popular Ports: Some popular destinations might be crowded, leading to longer wait times for attractions or sold-out excursions.
  • Onboard: Ships often sail at full capacity during this period, meaning more competition for amenities like spa bookings or specialty dining.

Tip: Book well in advance, keep an eye out for deals, and set a budget for onboard expenses.

Adjusted Itineraries and Timings

Bahamas Cruise In December Weather: What To Expect

warmest cruise in december

Taking a cruise to the Bahamas in December can be an ideal warm winter getaway. If you’ve wondered what kind of weather to expect on a Bahamas cruise during the last month of the year, this guide has got you covered with everything you need to know.

If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer to your question: December is one of the best months for cruising to the Bahamas thanks to warm temperatures typically in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit, low chances of rain, and calm seas, though be prepared for the possibility of some wind .

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll give you the full scoop on average temperatures, sun and rain expectations, sea conditions, what to pack, plus tips for finding deals on Bahamas cruises in December.

Average Temperatures: Pleasantly Warm

When embarking on a Bahamas cruise in December, travelers can expect pleasantly warm temperatures throughout their journey. The Bahamas, known for its tropical climate, offers a welcome escape from the colder winter weather in many parts of the world.

Daily Highs and Lows

During December, the average daily high temperatures in the Bahamas range from the mid-70s to the low 80s Fahrenheit (mid-20s to low 30s Celsius). This means that you can expect sunny and comfortable weather during your cruise, perfect for lounging by the pool or enjoying outdoor activities.

At night, temperatures tend to drop slightly, with average lows ranging from the low 60s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 15 to 25 degrees Celsius). While it may be a bit cooler in the evenings, it is still considerably warmer compared to many other destinations during this time of year.

Water Temperature

The water temperature in the Bahamas during December is also pleasantly warm, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports. On average, the water temperature hovers around the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 24 degrees Celsius).

This means that you can take a dip in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Bahamas and enjoy the stunning marine life that the region is famous for.

It’s important to note that these are average temperatures, and weather patterns can vary from year to year. It’s always a good idea to check the latest weather forecasts before your cruise to ensure you pack accordingly and plan your activities accordingly.

For more information on the weather in the Bahamas and up-to-date forecasts, you can visit www.weather.com or www.accuweather.com .

Precipitation Outlook: Low Rainfall

When it comes to the weather in the Bahamas during December, one of the things you can expect is low rainfall. December is typically a dry month in the Bahamas, with minimal precipitation compared to other times of the year.

This means that you’ll have a higher chance of enjoying clear skies and sunny weather during your Bahamas cruise in December.

According to historical weather data, the average rainfall in the Bahamas in December is around X inches per month. This low level of precipitation makes it an ideal time to explore the beautiful beaches, go snorkeling or diving, and take part in various outdoor activities without worrying about getting caught in a rainstorm.

Why is December a dry month?

The dry weather in December can be attributed to the Bahamas’ location and climate. The Bahamas is located in the Caribbean region, which experiences a dry season during the winter months. The dry season is characterized by less rainfall and lower humidity levels, creating a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for visitors.

Additionally, the Bahamas lies in the hurricane belt, and December marks the end of the Atlantic hurricane season. As a result, the likelihood of encountering tropical storms or hurricanes is significantly reduced during this time, further contributing to the low rainfall in the region.

What does this mean for your Bahamas cruise?

If you’re planning a Bahamas cruise in December, the low rainfall outlook is great news for you. It means that you’ll have plenty of opportunities to soak up the sun, relax on the deck, and engage in various water activities without any interruption from rain showers.

You can look forward to clear blue skies and warm temperatures as you explore the stunning islands and enjoy the many amenities onboard your cruise ship.

However, it’s worth noting that even though the chances of rain are low, it’s always a good idea to pack some light rain gear or an umbrella, just in case. Weather can be unpredictable, and a sudden shower can occur, albeit rare, during your trip.

For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecast during your Bahamas cruise, you can check websites such as www.weather.com or www.accuweather.com . These websites provide detailed information about the weather conditions in the Bahamas, including precipitation levels, temperature ranges, and other relevant data to help you plan your activities accordingly.

Sea and Wind Conditions: Mostly Calm

When embarking on a Bahamas cruise in December, travelers can generally expect mostly calm sea and wind conditions. This is good news for those who may be prone to seasickness or prefer smoother sailing.

While the weather can vary from year to year, December is typically considered part of the dry season in the Bahamas, which means that conditions are generally more favorable for cruising.

In December, the waves in the Bahamas are usually quite gentle, making for a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience. The calm sea conditions make it an ideal time to participate in water activities such as snorkeling or kayaking, as the water is generally clear and tranquil.

Travelers can look forward to relaxing on the deck of their cruise ship, feeling the gentle rocking motion of the waves as they soak up the sun and enjoy the breathtaking views of the crystal-clear waters.

The winds in the Bahamas during December are typically mild, with average speeds ranging from 5 to 15 knots. This means that there is usually a pleasant breeze in the air, which can be refreshing without being too strong.

The calm wind conditions make it easier for cruise ships to navigate and provide a comfortable experience for passengers. Whether you’re lounging by the pool or taking a leisurely stroll on the deck, you can expect the gentle breeze to add to the overall enjoyment of your Bahamas cruise in December.

3. Consider shoulder season cruises

December falls in the shoulder season for Bahamas cruises, which means that prices are generally lower compared to peak season. By opting for a cruise during this time, you can enjoy the beautiful Bahamas weather while also taking advantage of lower prices.

Additionally, the crowds are often smaller during shoulder season cruises, allowing you to have a more peaceful and relaxed experience.

4. Utilize travel websites

Travel websites can be a valuable resource when searching for deals on December Bahamas cruises. Websites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Cruise Critic often have special promotions and discounts that are not available elsewhere.

By comparing prices on these websites, you can easily find the best deal for your December cruise.

5. Sign up for cruise line newsletters

Cruise lines often send out newsletters and promotional emails to their subscribers. By signing up for these newsletters, you can stay informed about any upcoming deals or discounts specifically tailored for December cruises.

This way, you’ll be among the first to know about any special promotions and can snatch up a great deal before it’s gone.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to finding an amazing deal on your December Bahamas cruise. Whether you choose to book in advance, take advantage of last-minute deals, or explore shoulder season options, you’re bound to have an incredible vacation without breaking the bank.

2023-24 really was Wisconsin's warmest-ever winter, state climatologist confirms

warmest cruise in december

Last week, weather experts confirmed what many have been predicting for the past few weeks ― this was in fact Wisconsin's warmest-ever winter on record.

The Wisconsin State Climatology Office announced Friday that December 2023-February 2024 was the warmest winter in the state since record-keeping began in 1895.

This winter was nearly 10 degrees warmer than Wisconsin's three-month winter normal of 18.5 degrees. The three-month average temperature across the state was 28.3 degrees, more than two degrees warmer than Wisconsin's previous warmest-ever winter in 2001-2002, which saw a three-month average of 26.1 degrees.

Numerous smaller weather records were set during this record-setting winter.

December 2023 was Wisconsin's warmest last month of the year on record. It was the first time the statewide average December temp was above freezing (the month's average was 32.3 degrees), and the month was only about two degrees colder than November.

Thanks to  nine days of well-below-normal temperatures  during  mid-January's cold snap , the first month of the year was only Wisconsin's 10th warmest on the books. Still, this January was 8.5 degrees warmer than normal, on average.

This February was also Wisconsin's warmest ever . The statewide average temp was 31.8 degrees, according to state climatologist Steve Vavrus. This is more than 16 degrees above the average February temperature. Wisconsin's previous warmest-ever February occurred in 1998 with a statewide average temp of 31.6, WKOW 27 reported .

This was also the warmest winter in history in the U.S.

"This was a historically warm winter, not only in Wisconsin but in most of the northern half of the country," Vavrus said.

Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, New York, New Hampshire and Vermont also saw their warmest winters on record. Five additional states recorded their second-warmest winters.

Furthermore, the contiguous United States experienced its warmest-ever winter, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . The country recorded a three-month average temp of 37.6 degrees, more than five degrees above average.

This season's winter weather records include Wisconsin's first February tornado and a 60-degree temperature drop

This winter's unseasonably warm weather set the stage for other notable weather records throughout the state.

These included Wisconsin's first-ever and only February tornado , which touched down near Edgerton and Evansville on Feb. 8. The tornado spun up, in part, due to record-setting warm temperatures. Usually, cold weather prevents winter tornadoes from happening in Wisconsin. The Feb. 8 tornado was one of only five winter tornadoes in the state's recent history.

Interestingly, the National Weather Service issued more tornado and thunderstorm warnings than winter storm warnings and other winter weather advisories in Wisconsin this winter. Five tornado warnings, eight severe thunderstorm warnings and six winter weather advisories were issued this season. NWS did not issue any thunderstorm or tornado warnings in Wisconsin last winter.

Wisconsin also recorded its highest February and highest winter temperature of all time ― 77 degrees in Kenosha on Feb. 27, Vavrus said. This shattered the previous February and winter record by five degrees.

This was quickly followed by a record-setting temperature drop across the state, with temps plummeting 60 degrees in some areas overnight. In Milwaukee, temps tanked from 74 degrees on the afternoon of Feb. 27 to just 16 degrees the following morning.

Why was this Wisconsin's warmest-ever winter?

"The extreme warmth this winter was likely caused by a combination of the El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean and the long-term climatic warming trend," Vavrus explained.

An El Niño event is caused when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean warm to above average for several months. During an El Niño, the polar jet stream is shifted northward, which limits how far south cold-air intrusions from Canada can travel into Wisconsin.

In general, El Niño brings above-average temperatures to the northern United States, which often result in below-average snowfall in moderate-to-strong El Niño years. Last year, the  Milwaukee-area NWS said  this winter's El Niño was on track to be one of the strongest on record.

But what about climate change?

Climatology is the study of weather over time, local NWS meteorologist Taylor Patterson said. So, when it comes to whether a singular event like this season's El Niño was caused by climate change, it's hard to say right away.

When studying climate change, "you look at multiple events over a year or longer," Patterson said. So, regarding the cause of El Niño and this season's incredibly warm winter, "We don't really know, but it's definitely something that we'll be looking back on as we start to look at it in context to previous years and into the future" when studying the climate.

How will Wisconsin's warmest winter on record affect the spring and summer?

Wisconsin is expected to see the "tail end" of the El Niño effect in March, April and May, said local NWS meteorologist Jaclyn Anderson. While exact temps are unknown, this three-month period has a "higher potential for seeing above-normal temperatures" throughout the state.

"The impacts we get from El Niño during the winter will loosen their grip in the summer," Anderson said. "There's not a strong correlation between El Niño and what happens in the summertime."

While the Climate Prediction Center  expects El Niño to become more neutral  in the summer months, it also says there are "increasing odds" of a La Niña effect developing next winter.

La Niña allows more Arctic air to make its way down to the Midwest, Anderson said, and can cause the opposite effects of El Niño ― meaning we could see a colder, snowier winter in 2025.
