Why should I pack a cruise capsule wardrobe

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

Before we get into how to put together a cruise capsule wardrobe first we are going to go through why you pack a capsule wardrobe for a cruise for those that are on the fence.

For those of you who are first time cruisers it it worth pointing out that cruise cabin staterooms are not renowned for being large. By packing a capsule wardrobe you will be taking up much less space in your cabin which is always a plus.

Also by packing a capsule wardrobe you will be able to use less bulky luggage. As you have to store your luggage in your stateroom it is always an advantage to be able to use less busy luggage. This is particularly useful if you are going on an extra long cruise i.e. a world cruise (please check out this how to pack for a world cruise or transatlantic cruises posts for more information on packing for longer cruises).

Capsule wardrobes for river cruises are also especially important as river cruises tend to have even smaller cabins than their ocean going counterparts.

Also there is a chance (depending on how good you are and how much of an over packer you are you may be able to do a cruise with carry on only.

Now capsule wardrobes are great not only for cruises but for other types of travel and for those who want to minimise their wardrobe more generally. For information on how to pack a minimalist capsule wardrobe check out this post.

As such there are a few main capsule wardrobe rules or principles that you should try to abide by when putting together your cruise capsule wardrobe

The main rules for putting together a cruise capsule wardrobe are:

Only take beloved items

Now by this I mean only take items that you are absolutely 100% sure that you want to wear. If there is something that is on your maybe pile or an item of clothes that you find yourself not wearing much at home my advice is to leave this at home.

If you don’t wear it at home it is unlikely it will be come a go to item on a cruise ship.

Everything must work in more than one outfit

Don’t pack anything that can only be worn in one way. Everything you pack must work in several outfits and be dressed up or down with different accessories.

Pack less but get more

In the theme of the above the whole principle of capsule wardrobes, its tagline if you will is pack less get more outfits.

You could also try using the 5 4 3 2 1 Packing Method .

Color schemes

Now this isn’t necessary in all capsule wardrobes but I like to pick a color pallete to that everything I wear goes with several other things.

So now we have discussed why you should pack a capsule wardrobe and the basics about packing capsule rules we will turn our attention to how to put together a cruise capsule wardrobe.

Note : This cruise capsule packing lists is designed to be used on wherever you are going on your cruise however some cruises do require some adjustments based on the weather and activities you may be doing on your cruise.

Cruise Capsule Wardrobe Packing List

T Shirts are a staple of any cruise capsule wardrobe. If you are cruising somewhere hot then t shirts should be included on your Caribbean cruise capsule wardrobe packing list as they are cool and if you are going somewhere such as Alaska or Iceland they are a great base layers.

I take several usually one for each day of the cruise.

Tailored shorts are perfect for hot weather cruises. Pick a color that matches most of your tops to make sure it is interchangeable.

I normally take one slightly more Casual pair and one slightly smarter.

Capri Pants / Long Trousers

Briggs New York Womens Pull On Capri Pocket Casual Pants, Cobblestone, 16 US

Capri pants or long trousers in a versatile color are a must for any capsule wardrobe. They are great for locations where you need to wear long length trousers i.e. the Middle East or religious sites but also can be used on smart casual evenings in the main dining room dressed up with some wedges or pashmina and top.

I normally take one smarter and one more casual pair of trousers with me on every cruise.

LookbookStore Women's Casual Cute V Neck Mesh Panel Blouse 3/4 Bell Sleeve Loose Top Summer Flowy Work Shirt Nautical Blue Size XX-Large

A blouse again is the perfect day to night transition item. During the day it is perfect for day’s when the weather is cooler or you need a more conservative outfit i.e. in places like Qatar with a strict dress code .

It can also be dressed up with jewellery and a pashmina for a smart casual evening in the dining room.

Amazon Essentials Women's Twist Front Maxi Dress, Cobalt Blue, Medium

Maxi dresses are another great transition item for day to night wear. Maxi dresses are great in hot weather during the day especially if you pick a cotton fabric (which we recommend you do as irons are a cruise prohibited item and firmly on the what not to pack on a cruise list ).

Then again they can be dressed up with a pashmina or jewellery.

Ciormis Shawl Wraps for Women, Silky Jacquard Paisley Pashmina Scarves for Bridal Formal Dresses(US-Light Blue)

A pashmina is a great way to turn a day time look into a night time look. It helps dress ups any outfit and it is a vital item to protect you from the ship’s air conditioning which can be fierce.

This can be either real or imitation. Personally I don’t wear my nice jewellery when in port but use on the cruise in the evening to dress up outfits and then leave it in the safe for when I am on shore.

Wedges for me are the perfect evening shoe. They are dressy enough for formal nights but also can be worn as a daytime sandal too.

If you are anything like me you will do a lot of walking on your cruise excursions. Make sure you have a really comfy pair with you that you have already worn in.

These are perfect for round the pool deck, on beach excursions and fi you pick a pair with good arch support they will also be great for walking in.

Click here to shop sandals with good arch support

This is an essential if you are planning on using the gym on the cruise ship or taking a class like a yoga class. Ideally you will be able to use this on one of your more active shore excursions too.

Ok, it is hard to have swimwear that has more than one purpose but you will definitely want to take this with you.

Beach Cover or Sarong.

If you are doing lots of beach excursions or plan on spending lots of time on the pool deck you will want to add a beach cover or sarong to your packing list. I personally like a sarong as it is a bit more versatile that a sarong as it can be style in a couple of different ways to make the outfit look different.

We recommend packing a smarter hat rather than a baseball cap as these can be used in more places and as part of more outfits.

A must for any cruise as the sea can get dazzling.

Click here to shop our favourite sunglasses.

Depending on the cruise and expected weather I will probably add a jacket that goes with most things to my packing list.

For cold weather destinations and for those that get cold in air con I would also add a cardigan in a versatile color

Cross body bag

Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag, Black, One Size, 8.5 x 8.5 x 2

A cross body bag in a neutral color that works with all your outfits is perfect for shore excursions. As with any tourist destinations around the world there can be pick pockets looking to prey on unsuspecting tourists.

Make yourself a harder target by using a cross body anti theft bag instead of a backpack or other type of purse.

How to Build the Perfect Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

One of our very best packing tips is to fill your closet (and suitcase) with reliable staples you can rewear again and again. Of course, those essentials will vary slightly by season. When building a winter travel capsule wardrobe, timeless basics and layering pieces are key. Instead of panic-buying trendy outfits you'll wear once before every vacation, focus on adding a few high-quality pieces to your wardrobe that pair effortlessly with your existing favorites and will last for years to come.

If you think you really have nothing to wear for your next weekend away, we've got you covered with all the basics needed to build your very own winter travel capsule wardrobe from scratch. These are the thermal layers, comfortable shoes, and practical dresses that'll work whether you're headed on an après-ski trip with friends or exploring a new cold-weather city. From cashmere sweaters and cozy matching sets to packable puffers and sleek leather bags, you can count on these multi-purpose must-haves to keep your outfit options endless.

Must-haves for a winter travel capsule wardrobe:

The perfect long-sleeve, the cashmere sweater, the matching set, the tailored pant, the dark wash jean, the winter legging, the packable puffer, the chic city coat, the durable boot, the everyday sneaker, the leather bag.

Dressing for cold weather is all about layering. The perfect base for every winter outfit: a soft, basic long-sleeve shirt that can be easily layered underneath jackets and vests , and be worn on its own, too. Neutral colors are your best bet—they can be tucked into just about any pair of pants you pack and can be reworn with almost any outfit.

What's better than slipping on your favorite cozy sweater and curling up by the fireplace? Cashmere sweaters look extremely polished when dressed up with a skirt and tights, and work just as well with simple jeans and loafers . The material is known to be ultra-soft, warm, and supremely timeless—you'll be wearing these sweaters for winters to come.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

Every traveler understands the importance of cozy loungewear , especially when it comes to long-haul flights . The secret to dressing comfortably at the airport while still looking put together is a monochromatic matching set. Slip on either of these sets from Buck Mason or Lulus with a pair of white sneakers, baseball cap, and long coat over top and you'll be serving effortless airport style instantly.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

Just because the temperature drops doesn't mean we have to swear off dresses for the season. In fact, simple dresses that can be worn with a pair of tights or tall boots are a great way to elevate your look without sacrificing too much warmth. Below, you'll find a few of our favorite styles to wear this season, from long-sleeve turtle necks and cozy sweater dresses to the viral Soft Lounge dress from Skims. Toss any of these options in your suitcase for your next getaway and you'll be covered for fancy dinners, parties, and any other dressed-up events.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

A sleek pair of pants like these from Abercrombie & Fitch and Everlane are so versatile—they transition from the office to a dinner date effortlessly. Pair them with your favorite loafers or a plain white sneaker and you're ready to go.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

We all need that one favorite pair of jeans. While I love my light-colored jeans most of the year, a dark wash is much more fitting for winter months. We don't need to tell you just how often you'll be wearing these this season. I always pack a high-waisted, straight-leg jean without any rips like the pair below from Madewell in my suitcase—even in the summer months, just in case.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

If I'm not traveling in a loungewear set, I'm rocking my go-to pair of black leggings . This time of year, I trade them in for an extra-warm pair of winter leggings . These are typically lined with a soft material like fleece and offer added insulation for those frigid, snowy days. Thermal leggings especially come in handy for outdoorsy winter trips—whether you're skiing, snowboarding, or just cabin-bound, these will be your new BFF.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

Don't underestimate the power of a packable puffer . Styles like these from Girlfriend Collective and Patagonia offer a surprising amount of warmth for how lightweight and seemingly thin they are. The best part? These compressible jackets can be packed down into a small bag, making them a must-have for travelers with little suitcase room traveling from a warm-weather destination, or bringing multiple coats along.

Image may contain: Clothing, Coat, Jacket, Overcoat, Person, and Adult

If you're headed out for a day of sightseeing, you'll want to throw on a chic long coat that offers equal parts warmth and style. These wool coats are great to wear over a sweatshirt, sweater, or light jacket, and lock in plenty of heat for a full day of exploring.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

If one's things for sure: We'll always rely on a durable boot for the winter. Whether you want something sleek to dress up an outfit, a waterproof workhorse that can take on uneven terrain, or a shearling-lined boot for those extra-windy days, we've got you covered. While boots certainly aren't the most packable shoe you own (if possible, wear them on the plane), they always prove worth it!

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

The year-round essential we're packing no matter what: a classic white sneaker . These comfortable kicks from Adidas, Veja, New Balance, and Reebok will match any outfit in your carry-on, whether it's a pair of jeans, leggings, slacks, or a casual dress. When you're walking around a new city clocking upwards of 20,000 steps, you'll definitely want a trusted sneaker you can wear all day long, blister-free. The New Balance 547 Core sneakers have accompanied me on countless trips, from weeklong cruises and winter cabin escapes to European walking tours.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Sneaker

We all know the importance of an ultra-soft, warm scarf to protect our necks from extreme temperatures. Made of winter-ready materials like wool, cashmere, and alpaca, these lightweight scarves are the great for travelers, whether you're commuting to work, headed on a ski trip, or want something to wrap around you on a chilly plane ride. The options below are just as chic as they are practical.

winter cruise capsule wardrobe

Rounding out our list of the best winter wardrobe essentials for travelers is none other than a leather bag—the kind you'll wear anywhere and everywhere this season and beyond. We've gathered a few of our favorite styles, from trendy Poléne and Coach bags to last-forever options from Madewell and Cuyana. These crossbody, shoulder, and tote bags are perfect for day trips, museum openings, and dinner dates. I try to save packing space by bringing along a black or brown leather bag that will match any outfit in my carry-on and suit any occasion.

Packing a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Just getting dressed warmly in winter can feel like a chore, much less packing up all the layers ahead of your vacation. Most of the time, I travel with carry on luggage only – even in winter. For longer winter trips (over 10 days), I’ll add a suitcase for a fun coat or a really good pair of winter boots – it’s not worth being cold or feeling bland on my trip just so I can say I didn’t check a bag!

Regardless, no one likes to lug heavy suitcases around when they’re trying to enjoy a new destination, so I always pack a Travel Capsule Wardrobe . If you’ve been around for a while, you know the drill: put together a well-edited, remixable collection of clothes to pack ahead of time. Then, on your trip, your luggage load is lighter and you can get dressed on autopilot and still feel stylish (and warm). Packing Light for Winter

Because winter calls for so many more accessories (hats! mittens! scarves!), this 17-item/10-outfit capsule is what I’ll be packing for my cold weather trips that are less than ten days. Using my favorite packing cubes , this should all fit nicely in your carry-on luggage . Don’t forget to wear the bulkiest pieces ( coat , sweater , jeans , chunky boots ) on the plane to save space!

A mix of fun and basic ( a turtleneck, but make it stripey ), cozy ( a big soft sweater ) and polished ( this cheerful floral blouse ).

Notably less fun, but they’ll go with everything: modern black denim sans hem , a warm knit skirt , and classic winter white pants .

How to wear a pretty printed dress in winter? Add fleece-lined tights and tallllll boots . If it’s really cold, upgrade to a base layer or pants with stretch . More cold weather outfit hacks right this way .

Three pairs of shoes can see me through almost any length of trip: low white boots for lots of walking, patent platform brogues for lighter days, and tall black boots (they roll up nicely for packing!) for an extra layer against the cold.

When your coat is all that most people can see during the day, it’s nice to have a fun one. I’ll stick with one solid wool coat , but for longer trips add a printed coat , too!

ACCESSORIES

To keep warm: a black pom beanie , cozy alpaca scarf , and non-boring mittens . To carry things: a cheery crossbody bag (for exploring) and a more-than-basic tote (for travel and market trips). Don’t forget fleece lined tights – they’re a winter miracle.

If you feel like you never know what to wear or struggle with keeping your packing at a minimum, consider converting your closet into a capsule wardrobe filled with stylish and versatile staples instead. If you didn’t know, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of garments that can be mixed-and-matched together for endless styling capabilities, which means less time stressing over what to wear. These collections often consist of pieces like comfortable trousers , basic T-shirts , and easy-to-style shoes in neutral yet timeless hues to ensure that they'll always be in style.

Curating a capsule wardrobe is especially important when packing for trips as it simplifies your closet contents, and can actually save you money by sticking to the basics instead of following the trends (which will need replacing come next season). If you’ve been hoping to get started but haven't known where to start, you’re in luck because this fashion-loving, New York City-based travel writer has gathered a list of some of the top winter travel pieces at Amazon right now. These capsule wardrobe must-haves include everything from the perfect pair of jeans to warm puffer jackets , and are guaranteed to help you pack and dress with ease (while still looking great, staying warm, and feeling comfortable) this season.

Tronjori Women’s Palazzo Trousers

You might be surprised to find just how versatile a pair of wide-leg trousers can be. Perfectly relaxed and polished, they can be worn from the office to the airport, all while keeping you looking seamlessly put-together and, of course, feeling comfortable. In fact, one shopper hailed this specific pair as “the best pants [they] own,” and further gushed that “these pants are perfect. I wear these at least every other day and will be buying another pair soon.” If you don’t already have a go-to pair in your collection, consider grabbing these trousers while they’re on sale for $33.

Amazon Essentials Women’s Crewneck T-Shirt Set

The key to never running out of things to wear is stocking up on versatile pieces that go with everything. And few items are as matchable (and layerable) as a solid T-shirt that you can pair with jeans, trousers, leggings, and really any other garment that your heart desires. Plus, it can add extra depth to your favorite sweaters, blazers, and cardigans when worn as a base (and double as a workout top or pajama shirt when needed). We found this top-rated set with more than 33,000 five-star ratings for just $20, and you should really snag them ahead of your next trip.

Adar Uniforms Women's Long-Sleeve T-Shirt Set

While T-shirts are year-round staples, if you want something with a bit more length and warmth, you should make sure that you have a few reliable long-sleeve shirts in your stash. They’re just as easy to style as a T-shirt, but have the added warmth to keep you cozy this season. And better yet, you can snag this set of three for $33 at Amazon.

Thermajane Women’s Thermal Fleece Set

To avoid cluttering your wardrobe and suitcase with various mismatched fleece-lined leggings and tops, consider streamlining your gear all into one convenient thermal set instead. It’s winter and it’s only going to get colder from here on out, so if I were you, I’d snag this cozy set for just $29 to have handy for your outdoor adventures or extra cold days.

Levi’s Women’s Low Pro Jeans

A cute yet comfy pair of jeans are one of the pillars of any good capsule wardrobe, and when I think of a great pair of jeans, Levi’s comes first to mind. And I’m not the only one, according to one especially happy shopper , the brand's Low Pro Jeans deserve a spot in everyone's closet. They wrote, “Finding flattering jeans is a nightmare. But when I pulled these on — [oh, my God,] they slid on perfectly… I feel hugged and supported, instead of squished and constricted.” Try a pair out for yourself while they’re double discounted down to $56 today (make sure to clip the on-site coupon to unlock the extra savings).

Dr. Scholl’s Women’s Time Off Sneakers

A comfortable pair of shoes are travel and capsule wardrobe musts, and if there’s one that I’ve recommended over and over again, it's these incredibly supportive, versatile, and podiatrist-approved sneakers. They go with virtually everything in my wardrobe and have even been the only pair of shoes that I’ve packed for trips. Do yourself a favor and try them out for yourself — you won’t regret it.

Soda Pilot Women’s Chelsea Boots

If you’re looking for affordable cold-weather shoes that can be worn to the office, while running errands, and beyond, allow me to introduce you to the Soda Pilot Chelsea boots. And if you’re worried that they won't be comfy with their lug soles and leather construction, don't be; they're teacher-approved. One wrote , “These boots are great… They slide on super easily and are comfortable to wear all day teaching.”

Amazon Essentials Women's Heavyweight Puffer Coat

One sleek, high-quality puffer jacket is all that you need to brave the winter; after all, very few things are as uncomfortable as wearing a stiff, bulky coat on a travel day. Consider shopping this durable, insulated, and water-resistant jacket as your go-to winter coat to keep you warm and stylish all season long. It's sporty enough to wear on hikes or out in the snow, but still fashionable enough to put the finishing touches on your outfit for the day.

The Gym People Women's High-Waist Leggings

You can almost always find me in a comfortable pair of leggings, especially on travel days. And this specific pair is not only an Amazon best-seller , but shoppers who have tried them gushed that they’re the “ best pair [they’ve] ever owned. ” And, it doesn’t hurt that this pair is also stocked with spacious side pockets to hold onto a few of your personal items. If it were up to me, every outfit would revolve around these leggings, which can be worn on their own for workouts, under jeans for extra warmth, at bedtime as pajamas, and with a nice top and booties when you want to be dressy but comfy.

Lillusory Women’s Crewneck Sweater

Building a successful capsule wardrobe hinges on gathering essential pieces that you genuinely enjoy wearing. In line with that, I suggest adding this cozy sweater to your collection. In addition to making a stylish top for casual outfits, this sweater can easily be dressed up with a skirt or trousers when needed. Plus, it's the perfect amount of oversized to double as a sweatshirt on long flights. With all of these styling possibilities, I recommend stocking up on a few different colors like black, gray, and white so you’ll never find yourself without this versatile option in your outfit rotation.

Allegra K Women’s Breasted Winter Coat

Most suitcases aren't roomy enough to pack multiple jackets. So, if you find yourself in need of a versatile outerwear piece, this formal and warm option from Allegra K will get a lot of use. Its breasted lapels give the same level of professionalism as a blazer, while its longline hem and slightly relaxed fit allows it to pass for a casual coat when needed. And, it's fully lined for warmth but still relatively lightweight compared to puffers and down coats, so it'll be easier to wear and potentially pack.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime

During the day, the main thing is ensuring your cruise clothes are comfortable for relaxing on board or exploring ashore. Normal resort wear is perfectly acceptable during the day.

Cruise daytime wear is typically broken up into two categories:

  • Sea days, where you’re on the boat all day
  • Port stops, where you are exploring the latest destination at which you’ve arrived

what-to-pack-for-a-cruise-vacation

Sea Day Outfit

On most cruises, you’ll have at least one sea day. This means you’ll be on board the ship all day while you sail to the next port.

Deep V-Neck Cover-Up Maxi Dress

Typically, these are the most relaxed and casual days. Be sure to pack a swimsuit and cover up or sarong. You’ll also need a hat, flip flops, and sunscreen if you plan to sit by the pool all day.

Quince 100% European Linen Shorts

No matter what you plan to do on your sea day, there’s no need to dress up. Shorts and a tank top or t-shirt are ideal if you plan to spend more time taking part in activities inside the ship, such as cooking classes or art auctions.

Port Stop and Shore Excursion Outfit

For beach stops, you can repurpose the same outfit you wore around the pool on your sea day. But if you’re planning to stroll through town or take a ship-sanctioned shore excursion, you’ll want to wear something a with a little more coverage.

You’ll also need a sturdy pair of walking shoes, such as Skechers Go Walks or Birkenstocks , depending on your level of activity. It’s also a good idea to take a scarf or light sweater in case there’s a cool breeze.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Evenings

How much to dress up will depend on the type of cruise. These days, there’s no need to bring formalwear on most cruises, unless you want to. However, there are still some that have formal dinners.

what-to-pack-for-a-cruise-vacation

Loveappella Faux Wrap Top

Some people also really enjoy dressing up. If that sounds like you, a cocktail dress and heels is about as dressy as most women get. But if you prefer to keep it casual, dark wash jeans and a pretty blouse are perfectly acceptable.

Take one or two white or solid-colored blouses and a variety of scarves and necklaces you can use to make different combinations each night. No one will even notice you’re wearing the same thing.

Yosi Samra Samara Ballet Flats

Pair your outfit with ballet flats or bejeweled sandals that are easy to pack and versatile. I like Yosi Samra because they come in lots of fun colors and patterns, fold up to fit better in your bag, and are super comfortable.

Casual Dinner Outfit

On most ships for casual dinner it’s acceptable for ladies to wear a casual resort wear summer dress, pants or dark jeans and a nice top. You can even make it dressier by trading in jeans for trousers or adding a dressy scarf or necklace to your look.

Cruise Packing List

This cruise packing list is based on what I (Emma) would take for a week long cruise in a warm climate:

  • Three sundresses that can be worn both for casual dinner and during the day
  • Two pairs of shorts for daytime – one denim and one classic
  • Three tank tops for daytime – solid colors
  • One smart-casual skirt that can be worn for casual dinner and by day
  • One long sleeve shirt of light material
  • One tunic – perfect for relaxing by the pool on board or by the beach ashore
  • One light jacket
  • Two bathing suits
  • A Little Black Dress – this never goes wrong for evening wear and would be perfect to for a smart-casual dinner
  • One cocktail dress – cocktail dresses can be a little more fun than formal gowns but are still suitable for formal dinner.
  • One formal gown – a full length gown in a solid color always looks beautiful. Opt for classic elegance and it’ll never go out of style.
  • One pair of fancy heels – stick to a neutral color that will match multiple outfits
  • One pair of nice sandals – perfect for smart-casual evenings
  • One pair of tennis shoes or any comfortable walking shoes
  • Complimentary jewelry and bag to match your formal outfits, as well as a practical bag for daytime
  • Mascara , foundation , sunscreen and lipstick for a touch of glamour

This list was so helpful for my very first cruise!!! Thank you so much!!!💕

Anna

This is so helpful! Going on my Caribbean cruise in a few weeks, no idea how I can put everything in 1 luggage))) When it comes to dresses and formal dinner, how many dresses should I pack? Thanks

Alex

Hi Anna, A good place to start is to take a look at TFG’s Four Signature Packing Lists for ideas for a capsule wardrobe and how many clothing items you could pack – then depending on your preferences, you can choose more bottoms, fewer dresses, more tops – you can adjust the combination based on your needs: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/functional-and-fashion-packing-list/

Start with 10 items focusing on the absolute essentials – the core – and then decide if you need additional items or if you could do with less. If you carefully select your travel clothing choices and, for example, pack 6 tops and 4 bottoms, you’d have 24 ensembles on rotation. That’s 3 weeks’ worth of travel outfits with just 10 pieces of clothing!

I don’t know how I missed this when looking for help on my last cruise?!! I’d love to see packing lists for “over 50” women! 😉

Christina

I think the items would be the same, just the style might be different depending what you’re comfortable with. For example, the skinny pants might be swapped for a more classic cut and the short short demin shorts for a slightly longer pair. Or not, depending on what you like.

Upcoming Mediterranean cruise leaving Barcelona April 1, preceded by 10 days in London then Paris, followed by 3 days in Venice. Trying so hard to visualize packing less, less, less…

Wow that’s quite the European adventure! This 10 Step Packing Guide should help 😉 https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-europe/

Nancy Brewer

Susan, for many European cruises, the itineraries are pretty port intensive and formal nights may not be your thing. On our last we were lucky to get back and eat dinner in time before collapsing into bed to prep for the next day! A simple piece like a long skirt (maxi or midi) that can be dressed up or down with tops or accessories has always worked for me. It saves space to not have to pack a formal dress ( or suit for husband) you are only going to wear 2-3 times. Plus it doubles for coverage if you are going to places that require more modest dress.

Sandy

Would love pictures of casual & smart casual. Not sure that I know the difference!

Casual wear, I’d define as jeans, tanks, shirts, sundresses, etc. While smart casual has a slightly more polished look. Think what you’d wear to casual Friday in a formal office. Slacks, blouses, put together but not quite business attire. This post: https://travelfashiongirl.com/business-trip-packing-list-for-minimalist-fashionistas/

In the bottom-most graphic, the casual look could even be considered smart casual, but the after-work cocktails look and work attire are definitely smart casual! Hope that helps Sandy!

P.

Can you update the photos? I don’t see the photos any more. I love your site so so very much!

alex

Thanks! I’ll have to write another post as the photos have been removed by their original source. Thanks for reading!

Rachel Bell

Thanks for showing pictures with your examples! It can get so tricky knowing what clothing falls into what categories.

great! glad to help 🙂

How to Pack a Wardrobe Capsule for a Cruise

Facebook

I love your blog and have been reading it for a quite a while now, I love receiving my emails with your latest posts with tips and tricks.

I have a question which I thought might be interesting on your blog as we come into the Xmas holiday season, it relates to what to pack on a cruise, but may be relevant to people who are holidaying over the silly season!

I am going on a 2 week Xmas cruise at the end of the year and struggling with what to pack. I love your idea of capsule wardrobes and now use it for all my travels but for the cruise I seem to need so many different types of clothes.

Clothes/shoes suitable for sightseeing at our destinations Clothes for relaxing around the pool/boat 3 outfits + shoes for formal nights and smart clothes for dinner each evening.

Any advice on where to start would be most appreciated.

What to Pack for a Cruise

Firstly, you will need a couple of ‘evening’ gowns, most cruises do have a night-time dress code that often includes a formal night or two. Then you may dressier dinners the rest of the time.  For this I’ve chosen to work with two patterned skirts with colours that relate to each other.  I think two ‘formal’ outfits is enough, people remember much less about what you were wearing the other day than you do!

Following up on my post on how to style a patterned skirt 9 ways , which is ideal for travel, you can see that I’ve taken the colours in both the skirts and used them in tops, some more formal, some more casual which can be worn with both skirts to dress up or down, plus the tops can also be worn with the shorts for sightseeing or for the more casual elements of the cruise.

You will need shoes you can walk around the ship in, plus shoes for sightseeing which are comfy. I didn’t include your swimmers, but you’ll need these for the pool! You may want to take a sarong as a cover up and don’t forget to pack a sun hat!

I’ve included a couple of shrugs in case it’s cool in the evenings, and a dressier shoe that goes with each of the outfits.

This capsule will make you an easy 24 outfits – which is more than enough for a 2 week holiday!

Have you been cruising? What do you recommend as your essentials?

Great capsule wardrobe! I love how you have used a small palette of colors and have massive variety in the styles of each piece of clothing. A very interesting & versatile wardrobe.

I always take a scarf with me and a hat. A bathing costume is important, too. Don’t forget your sunglasses. Have fun! Either you will love or don’t like it. And I love cruises!

I always take 2 swimming costumes…that way, you always have a dry one to put on. I also skip the heels and go for a flat shoe for dinner. No one sees them anyway!

You’re a fashion genius! I absolutely love your choice of clothing and colors.

As a frequent cruiser, let me add that the ship is almost always too cold, and you can’t adjust the temp of your cabin. Be sure to take a jacket just in case. You may also need something warner than a shrug in the dining room. The last cruise we took, which was a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise, I took a nice cropped jacket that could be worn over all of my dresses. There were 2 formal nights on that particular cruise. I wore more casual dresses on the other nights. Many women don’t bother to wear dresses on every night of the cruise, but my DH and I dine in the formal dining room every night because the food is better. If you’re going in there anyway, why not look nice?

Thanks for your tips

I come from a background where you never wear heels on a boat or ship. I prefer flat shoes and sandals and a resort look with kaftans and colourful cotton clothes. For the evenings, when a long dress is called for, it can be a long colourful maxi rather than a strictly formal lace or satin dress. Some sporty clothes for the mornings, some resort clothes for the rest if the day and dress-up clothes with a tropical or Asian vibe (eg Ikat print) would be my choice. Comfortable, breathable, colourful, holiday things with a cover-up or two for when you’re in air con.

While I have never been on a cruise I see a lot of tourists that come from the cruise ships that stop in Progreso and take a day trip to Merida. A lot of these people look like they are headed for a day at the beach instead of going to visit the state capitol. I think a little research before packing may help make better choices. climbing pyramids in flip flops isn’t safe (I’ve seen it attempted at Uxmal).

I suggest that if you are visiting someplace warm like the Yucatan, bring a hat (or buy one as a souvenir and wear it) and something to cover up, like a loose long sleeve shirt or at least a tee shirt. I’ve seen tourists in skimpy low cut tank tops getting bright pink in places that they probably don’t usually expose to the sun. No one enjoys a sunburn.

Unless your thighs rub, I think a skirt is much cooler than shorts and looks nicer.

I really like your capsule wardrobe.

regards, Theresa

Thank you for this article. I am heading off on a transatlantic cruise with a girlfriend at the end of this month – of course it will be winter but will apply the same principles as you have and see what I can come up with.

Hi Imogen, Thanks so much for featuring my question. This is a fantastic capsule. I love the colour & interest in the outfits. I will definitely take 2 formal dresses and heels of the formal nights, we will be travelling over Xmas/New Year and I love a chance to really dress up. My husband is packing his tux so why not? I love the idea of the mix and match skirt and tops for dinners on the other night and then also been able to use the tops with the shorts. Thanks, this has helped me immensley.

Pleasure – hope it helps you pack!

Just searched for cruise, and found this articlle. I have to cover up scars on my lower leg – so wondered if trousers can be worn for a formal dinner, or are maxi skirt or dress the only option ? Any suggestions please. Obviously I would concentrate on dressing my portrait area to deflect from my legs.

I would wear a long dress – I believe that pants are not really appropriate – though I’ve never been on a cruise!

Imogen-I’m going on my first cruise with the family (4 kids under age 15). We’ve never cruised before and I’m wanting some advice on how to pack all the formal wear? My 15 year old and I probably can both wear something more formal and then the dresses for each night of dining…I have 3 girls!! I just don’t know how I’m going to get all of that dressy stuff into our suitcases! My little girls don’t have the ability to have mix and match except for their excursion and “ship-wear” so I’m just trying to figure out the best way to carry it all. AND, my son, poor guy doesn’t own a nice jacket. As a 12 year old, could he make it in a nice shirt and tie? Thanks for all your help! I’m a little worried…

I’d be trying to pack capsules wardrobes for them each. And then think about “formal wear” capsules for those dressy nights (no reason why you can’t wear the same thing more than once, or a variation of it). I believe cruises are formal (but not super formal) much of the time from clients who have told me their experiences. I wouldn’t think the kids would have to be quite so formal. Yes I’m sure just a collared shirt and tie would be fine for a 12 year old boy.

Since this thread has staying power, I would add that cruise formal ranges from what might be called “Sunday-go-to-meeting” clothes to full on formal, but the trend has been to less dressy than a cocktail dress. Honestly, a top with sparkles or shimmer, and palazzo pants is more dressy than some wear. If you’d wear it to a holiday party, it’s probably dressier than most so that’s a good guide.

Please skip the higher heels — although some women wear them — because formal nights are almost always on sea days and you are on a moving ship! Wedge or kitten heels are fine, as are flats. I sometimes wear metallic flats on formal night.

Men can get away with shirt and tie on the more casual cruise lines, and even a sports jacket on the mid-level. I don’t know about Cunard etc. Check with the cruise lines or even CruiseCritic.com as some ships no longer even have formal night but suggest you can dress up if you like!

thanks for sharing your experiences Robin

Another thought I had after posting that: please, please do NOT bring “formal” wear that has glitter glued to it. Every formal night you will find little piles of glitter in the ladies’ rooms. You will also find glitter in everything else in your cabin and suitcase. (this is the voice of experience!)

Having been on quite a few cruises now, wearing a pair of trousers is fine for formal night. I have a black pair that I wear with a fancy top, or a plain top with a standout piece of jewellery. Lots of women prefer trousers over dresses & you can wear them at other times with other tops

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Your Key to Leveling Up Your Vacation Style

P recision packing is a true art form. We all know packing for vacation can be stressful. You want to have options for everything on (and off ) your agenda, but you don't want to overpack and overwhelm yourself. Luckily, there's a formula that makes packing a breeze—no matter where you're headed.

Enter the travel capsule wardrobe : your key to balancing practicality with style options to fit your entire itinerary, thanks to versatile pieces that transform seamlessly from outfit to outfit. Of course, how you'll curate this depends on where you're headed and what kind of vacation you're taking, which is where we come in. Ahead, see our guide to building the ideal travel capsule wardrobe for six vacation types , complete with insights from two fashion experts.

Meet the Experts

  • Audree Kate López  is a professional fashion stylist and editor based in New York City.
  • Caroline Maguire is the fashion director at Shopbop.

"It's about choosing the right pieces that are practical yet on-trend/fashionable. I always like to write down my outfits by day to see what I can wear multiple times to save room on packing." — Caroline Maguire, fashion director at Shopbop

On the Road Again

If your road trip finally made it out of the group chat (congrats!), the next step is deciding what outfits you want to wear on your grand adventure. If you've ever spent hours sitting in the car, you know comfort is key, but that doesn't mean style is out of the question. Grab your favorite pair of dad sneakers and pair them with either a matching set or a full-body onesie and oversized jacket ( see a few standout options here )—you'll be enviably cozy while emanating chic athleisure vibes. "I love dressing up, but you will never catch me in tight denim or a restricting top during a road trip," López tells us.

Oceanside Style

Packing for a tropical vacation is slightly easier than a winter getaway, as swimsuits and lightweight dresses take up less space than a puffer coat and snow boots. Still, if you're looking to simplify your packing list, focus on different accessories to change each look. Whether you love a good pair of sunglasses, a bucket hat (we rounded up a few standout options to wear in the sun ), a belt, or jewelry, accessorizing goes a long way.

For a beach getaway, the best travel capsule wardrobe comprises pieces that take you from poolside to dinner with ease. A linen shirt ( check out a few of our favorites here ) doubles as a coverup and looks great tucked into jeans with sandals, while a one-piece bathing suit—a poolside staple—also works as a bodysuit when paired with a miniskirt . "There is no need to pack a ton of extra tops or styling pieces when your swimsuits can be used as a top, bodysuit, undergarments, or layered under a sheer dress," says fashion stylist Audree Kate López.

If you only want to pack one handbag, you can't go wrong with a basket bag to fit all your necessities. "A beach tote can be used during the day at the pool/beach to carry essentials, towels, a book, etc., but can also be used as a carry-on personal item on the plane," López tells us.

Max Elevation

Packing for a mountain getaway may seem daunting, but we have the ultimate outfit formula to stay warm on the slopes and feel chic as you head straight to the lodge for an après-ski hot chocolate. The key to packing for a winter vacation is base layers. "You need to layer up in the mountains, so opt for fleece pullovers and warm hats, plus cute and cozy pieces you can mix and match throughout your stay," says Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire.

For a ski trip or other winter travel, you'll obviously need practical outerwear like a down jacket and snow boots, but don't forget to put thought into your base layers to maximize your style options. A turtleneck bodysuit ( see a few of our favorite bodysuits ) layers well under winter gear, plus you can elevate it for nighttime with chic trousers and a cardigan . As for pants, we love the below moto puffer style by Alo, as it works overtime as both regular cargo pants and a ski option.

Take On the City

The key to versatile and stylish packing for a city trip is channeling quiet luxury , proving the trend's staying power yet again. Think Sofia Richie Grainge 's style, including tailored basics and understated accessories. Rather than packing five different bags, choose a style with straps that you can adapt between shoulder and crossbody styles, like the below option from Brandon Blackwood. Pack a comfortable pair of black booties (the lower the heels, the better, since you'll be doing a lot of walking). "Avoid uncomfortable 'trendy' shoes and pack items that you can wear pretty much all day without needing to go back to the hotel and change," López tells us. A good pair of leather boots— like any of these —can go with any look.

Lastly, a city travel capsule wardrobe is best with a good coat and blazer to style with any outfit. Then you'll be able to swap out basics like a white tee, jeans, and a little black dress to create a range of sophisticated ensembles to fit everything on your agenda.

High Seas Fashion

When you're about to set sail on the trip of a lifetime, what do you pack? While you'll probably be soaking up a lot of sun on a cruise, it's important to remember that after the sun sets, it can get pretty chilly. Thus, a lightweight cardigan (we love these cashmere options ) will be your go-to from day to night when you need an extra layer. Additionally, a lightweight matching set like the one below from Abercrombie is an ideal option for packing light amid changing temps, as you can wear it together or separately to create a whole range of looks. "Pack easy day-to-night styles—things you can lounge in during the day by the pool or on [an] island, and then dress up easily for dinner and a show," Maguire advises.

One with Nature

Whether you're an outdoorsy type who loves camping or prefer the glamping experience, you'll want to be prepared to face the elements, and you can absolutely do so in style. A raincoat or windbreaker (ideally a two-in-one jacket) is a necessity, and these days, the market truly has all-weather pieces to fit every taste—the below water-resistant parka from Totême is a sophisticated, versatile option. You'll also need a good pair of sneakers for hiking , and it's a bonus if they're also waterproof.

"I am a glamper myself and love it," Maguire tells us. "You'll need layers for a camping trip. Go for an oversize flannel button-up and your favorite pair of denim —even overalls could be fun here." Look for moisture-wicking items for practicality and layer them with trend-forward pieces like a plaid flannel shacket.

Here’s Everything You Need To Build Your Dream Spring Capsule Wardrobe, According to a Shopping Editor

Trust me, your closet will thank you when you add these staple pieces to your collection..

Shop Spring Capsule Wardrobe

We independently selected these products because we love them, and we think you might like them at these prices. E! has affiliate relationships, so we may get a commission if you purchase something through our links. Items are sold by the retailer, not E!. Prices are accurate as of publish time.

From my many years working as a fashion editor-turned-shopping editor , it's safe to say I know my way around building a capsule wardrobe . While I often dip my toes into timely trends that probably won't be around for very long, my way of investing and experimenting in fashion is by sticking to wardrobe essentials . I can't express enough how many times I've impulsively bought pieces that either A: I let sit in my closet for ages with tags on, or B: wore once then never touched again because I was already on to the next trend. But as one learns, less is sometimes more, and building a capsule wardrobe is your way to stay looking trendy by mixing and matching different core pieces from your closet and always having something to wear. Yup, it'll prevent all those breakdowns many of us have when we "have nothing to wear".

Since springtime is officially here and many of us are in full spring-cleaning mode, it's time to also transition our capsule wardrobe. The best part? You're probably already halfway there without even realizing it since many of these staple pieces can be worn year-round. Just think: classic white T-shirts , white sneakers , cute flowy dresses to beat the heat, and lived-in jeans . But beyond these staples, I'm here to show you a few new fashion trends that'll add that extra special touch to your spring wardrobe. And while they may seem timely, these are pieces you can actually style for many more years to come—like cropped trench coats , modern ballet flats , and chic statement belts .

So, if you're ready to curate the ultimate spring capsule wardrobe with a handful of pieces you'll never want to stop wearing, keep scrolling for my top picks.

The white T-shirt

Leset margo cotton-jersey t-shirt.

The main building block of a capsule wardrobe is a high-quality white T-shirt. Made from 100% cotton, I love the boxy fit on this tee from Leset , making it perfect for every type of torso.

SKIMS Cotton Jersey T-Shirt

If you're looking for a form-fitting tee, I recommend snagging this SKIMS cotton jersey T-shirt ASAP. Even though I own this shirt in eight other colors, I find myself reaching for this white one to wear underneath oversized shirts during springtime.

The white sneaker

Superga unisex trainers.

A pair of versatile sneakers that have both athletic bones and can be worn casually is another wardrobe essential that belongs in your closet. These Superga trainers are the perfect blend of running shoes and everyday wear type of sneakers.

The ribbed tank

Madewell supima rib '90s tank.

There's just something about a classic ribbed tank that instantly elevates any outfit. While neutrals are usually the way to go when it comes to building a capsule wardrobe, during spring I love to venture out with a pop of color, like this Madewell '90s tank .

The midi dress

Anthropologie the tommie cap-sleeve smocked front-zip shirt dress.

As the days start getting warmer, midi dresses should make their way back into your rotation. I'm currently loving this buttery-yellow shirt dress from Anthropologie that'll keep you cool at any formal event.

Abercrombie & Fitch Emerson Off-The-Shoulder Midi Dress

For more casual events, reach for this off-the-shoulder midi dress . It comes in five colorways and can be paired with ballet flats, sandals, or white sneakers.

The straight-leg jean

Madewell the perfect vintage wide-leg crop jean.

While bootcut or skinny styles may come and go, there's no cut more timeless than the straight-leg/wide-leg jean. These cropped ones from Madewell are some of the best I've ever worn, featuring a worn-in comfy feel and a butt-lifting design.

Abercrombie & Fitch Ultra High Rise 90s Straight Jean

12 Spring Capsule Wardrobe Essentials to Refresh Your Style for a New Season

In This Article

As we transition from winter to spring , it's a great time to give your wardrobe a refresh. As you bring in new clothing and accessories , consider a bit of spring cleaning to simplify your life and make getting dressed more enjoyable. A spring capsule wardrobe isn't so different from your year-round capsule, featuring basics like white sneakers , basic tees, and your favorite lived-in denim . To make the season's constantly unpredictable weather easier to navigate, we've added practical staples like a transitional trench and a lightweight cardigan. The key to creating a versatile and functional capsule wardrobe is investing in pieces you can wear time and time again, styling many different ways. Looking to refresh your spring style? Ahead, see 12 essential pieces for a spring capsule wardrobe, complete with spring cleaning tips from two style experts.

Meet the Expert

  • Allison Bornstein is a stylist and wardrobe expert and the author of Wear It Well.
  • Mathilde Mader is the chief creative officer at Everlane. She also has prior experience at brands including Sonia Rykiel, Marni, and Kim Jones.

Transitional Trench

Spring's weather can be unpredictable, which is why a trench coat is key for layering. "A transitional trench coat is a versatile staple for any spring capsule wardrobe because it offers a touch of sophistication that effortlessly transitions between casual and elevated looks," says stylist and wardrobe consultant Allison Bornstein . Jacquemus's Le Trench Bari ($1485) is the ultimate splurge-worthy staple, crafted from water-repellent cotton canvas to keep you dry and stylish in April showers. Anine Bing's Randy Trench ($500) and Nichole Lynel's On Watch Plaid Detail Trench ($153) are other great, versatile options available for a more accessible price tag.

Pro Tip: "A trench coat also serves as the perfect outer layer for the 'three layer rule,' a styling method Stitch Fix coined for creating outfits with three distinct layers that will help you stay stylish while accounting for varying temperatures and weather forecasts for seasonal transitions like spring," Bornstein tells us.

Linen Dress

As spring approaches, we start reaching for lightweight materials like linen and cotton and steer away from heavier fabrics. "At Everlane, we design our pieces to be a part of your 'forever wardrobe,' and I really try to buy items for my own wardrobe thoughtfully and rework or restyle them as the seasons change and what’s in fashion evolves," says Everlane's chief creative officer, Mathilde Mader . "At the moment, I love layering: draping a sweater over the top of your blazer —or something more daring, like wearing a shirt over or under a linen shirtdress to create a double collar—can completely transform an item that might have been languishing at the back of your closet." We're loving Gap's Linen-Blend Midi Shirtdress ($90) for layering. If you're looking for more of a statement piece, opt for something with floral detailing, like Reformation's Amorette Linen Dress ($178).

Tailored Top

A tailored top or button-down shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can have in your wardrobe. "You can wear it open with a tank or tee in the spring and summer to get a little structure and tailoring while still feeling breezy," Bornstein says. The Row's Attica Oversized Cotton Shirt ($1150) is a great layering piece and comes in a light brick color, while Re Ona's Linen Oversized Shirt ($190) is a classic white button-down with an airy, warm-weather-ready twist.

You can always have fun with proportions when styling a button-down shirt. The Aknvas Flor Button Down Shirt 2 Roses ($450) adds dimension to any look. "If your top is more fitted, try styling it with a relaxed bottom, like a flowy skirt or wide leg trousers," Bornstein tells us. "If you’re opting for a tailored top that’s more oversized, such as a menswear-inspired button-down, and you want to create some balance, try a slim trouser for contrast."

Coco and Breezy

When curating a spring capsule wardrobe, consider investing in a few items you'll have for years to come. Sunglasses are a chic accessory that can instantly elevate a look without breaking the bank. Coco and Breezy's Nelson-102 Sunglasses ($99) are beautiful, affordable, and pair well with all spring essentials, so take your look from the beach to the bar and throw on some gold jewelry to tie everything together. If you're looking for a splurge-worthy pair, we're swooning over Miu Miu's Glimpse Rectangular-Frame Acetate Sunglasses ($530).

Modern Ballet Flats

Mansur Gavriel

You don't need to reinvent your wardrobe every season. A capsule wardrobe makes it easier to transition your style with pieces that are wearable whether it's warm or cold out. "I love a good Mary Jane for spring, and you can wear them in the fall over socks for a cute cold-weather look," Mader says. Mansur Gavriel's Square Toe Ballerina ($395) is a cult-favorite, and available in a variety of colors—flamingo pink is a stunningly fitting choice for spring. You can also have fun with the trend and style something more daring, like Toteme's Knitted Ballet Flats ($600).

Little White Tee

"A white t-shirt is a great styling tool," Bornstein says. "Style your white tee underneath a leather blazer and finish the look with your favorite pair of jeans, giving you the perfect blend of casual and elevated." Re Ona's Signature T-Shirt ($69) is a staple in our spring wardrobes, offering the perfect amount of comfort and stretch. Good American's Super Stretch Baby Tee ($59) is another great option.

Everyday Jeans

Tove Studio

Jeans are quintessential to creating a capsule wardrobe for any season. Everyone needs a few pairs of go-to pants that you know fit just right. Most of us are guilty of having items in our closet we don't wear anymore, so this spring, narrow down your denim collection to styles you'll actually wear on repeat. "If you are truly ready to part ways with the piece, consider having a clothing swap with a friend or donating it to give it a new life," Mader says. While you're spring cleaning, consider trying a new style—Mader tells us that "barrel leg jeans are having a real moment and might seem scary at first, but are actually so fun and easy to style." The oversized fit is fun and easy to style, but if you aren't ready yet, opt for a classic option like Tove Studio's Sade Jean ($436). Another style I reach for every season is Agolde's Dame High Rise Wide Leg ($258).

Lightweight Cardigan

Everlane x Marques' Almeida

A lightweight cardigan can easily and practically pull together any look, and this season, we're seeing delicate pieces with lace or mesh detailing. "A sweater is always a great layering piece," Mader tells us. "I love throwing it over my shoulders during the day and then putting it on overtop of my outfit as the evening gets cooler. With the weather shifting from cold mornings to warm evenings, it’s essential to invest in your spring layers."

Consider adding some sunshine to your wardrobe with Coach's Lace Knit Cardigan ($295). Also, Everlane recently collaborated with Portuguese design duo Marques’ Almeida on a capsule collection using only liability fabric that otherwise would have gone to waste. From the collection, we're loving the Alpaca Mesh Cardigan ($148).

Woven Shoulder Bag

"Adding a woven or raffia texture is a great way to signal spring," Bornstein tells us. Raffia has become a spring and summer staple, and brands are incorporating the fabric in bags, shoes, accessories, and more. Khaite's Medium Olivia Hobo Bag ($1350) is one of the most coveted bags of the season. You can also opt for a more affordable yet equally on-trend style, like Staud's Moon Woven Bag ($295). Bornstein loves a raffia bag for a transitional weather look, and DeMellier London's Tokyo Bag ($640) grounds the warm-weather-ready material in classic black leather. Style your bag with an oversized blazer and ecru jeans for a chic spring look.

Everyday Belt

Scanlan Theodore

Belt trends come and go, but an understated thin style is timeless. Not only are belts a functional accessory, but they have the power to change a look completely. The Scanlan Theodore Pointed Buckle Belt ($250) layers well over a tailored dress, while the Khaite Bambi Belt ($380) looks great with a good pair of jeans. If you have a little white dress in your closet that needs a facelift, you can revamp the look for spring with this elegant accessory.

Although mini skirts are trending for the warmer months (the tinier, the better), there's nothing quite like a classic midi skirt to elevate everyday basics. The A.L.C. Maia Cotton Midi Skirt ($495) is made from crisp cotton fabric and features a paper bag waist with a front slit. "You can pair it with tall boots, or wear your midi skirt with a pair of sandals and a white tee for a great minimal spring look," Bornstein says. The COS Embellished Circle-Cut Midi Skirt ($220) is a beautiful option if you're looking to add a fanciful touch to your spring wardrobe.

White Sneakers

New Balance

White sneakers offer versatility to your wardrobe, and let's be honest: There's nothing quite like a fresh new pair of kicks. "White sneakers are a great way to add a little sporty edge to your spring looks," Bornstein says. New Balance's 480 Sneakers ($90) offer both durability and style and can go from day to night with a few tweaks to your look. If you're looking for a mix of glamour and functionality, look no further than Stuart Weitzman's 5050 Lace Up Sneakers ($275).

If you are cruising to the Greek Isles in the fall, a summer wardrobe like the one I posted for the Mediterranean in summer won’t do. Temperatures are much cooler in November, so I took that into account for the actual Greek Isles cruise capsule wardrobe I wore on our recent trip.

Read on to see how I pulled the capsule wardrobe together, and where you can find the items I wore.

Save For Later 4

What Is A Capsule Wardrobe

Simply put, a capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing carefully curated to make the greatest number of combinations possible.

Packing for a cruise is the perfect time to practice creating a capsule wardrobe because you are limited to the capacity of your suitcase. Plus, you want the most outfit combinations possible without having to launder anything while on the cruise ship. For each item I packed, I planned to wear it multiple times during the trip.

Trip Parameters and Itinerary

This trip was thirteen days total in early November, including a ten-day cruise to the Greek Isles and Italy, plus exploration in the home port of Rome. Excursions were in the early morning, when temperatures are lower. The forecasts for Rome and our port stops called for temperatures around 70 with a good chance of rain, so I brought along a lightweight packable rain jacket and a travel umbrella.

Always the planner, I packed at least a week before we’re scheduled to leave. The day before we left for the trip, though, I checked the weather again and added a few long-sleeve or short-sleeve tops as needed, based on the updated forecast.

Greek Isles Itinerary

The Color Palette

To start, choose a color palette of a dark neutral, a light neutral or two, plus a limited number of accent colors that will all work together.

Normally, I would stick with a single dark neutral, either black or dark blue, but this time I wanted both. The majority of this capsule wardrobe is neutral, which is what I was going for, and I also decided to go mostly with solid colors rather than patterns.

For this trip, I chose the following color palette:

Where I Shopped

Wanting to do something a little different this time, I chose the clothing for this cruise capsule wardrobe from my own closet. Because of that, not everything I chose is available anymore. In those cases, I made substitutions for items currently available. The stores I shopped included Old Navy, Chico’s, Wool&, Land’s End, Amazon, and Allbirds.

Store inventories are fluid, so you may click on an item to shop it and find it’s no longer available. In any case, you can see the look I was going for.

The Bottoms

I like to have a nice choice of bottoms on a cruise, so I chose five casual pants and one dressy, deciding to forgo bringing a dress this time.

I love chinos for a cruise because they are comfortable, durable during excursions, and can easily be worn more than once. So, I chose four pairs of chinos and one pair of jeans for casual wear, and a nice pair of dressy pants for more formal dinners.

Old navy khaki chinos

Short-Sleeve Tops

Recently, I ordered a few tops in merino wool from Wool& , intrigued by its long-wearing odor-resistant qualities. It’s also thin and lightweight for packing, and easy to wash in the sink and hang to dry because it dries so quickly. It’s the perfect fabric for travel.

This trip involved a lot of walking and way too many stairs on excursions, so I knew I would probably be wearing short-sleeve tops for most days in port.

So, for short-sleeve tops, I chose four merino and four cotton tops.

Long-Sleeve Tops and Tunics

For cooler weather and chilly restaurants, I chose long-sleeve tops and tunics. Plus, I tend to get cold on cruise ships, so these light sweaters will be perfect.

Chicos black and white tunic

For this trip, all my shoes came from Allbirds because I have to wear flat, comfortable shoes these days. After breaking both my ankles several years ago, I can no longer wear any type of heel and must stick with flats. My Allbirds provide comfortable all-day wear, which is a must on an excursion-heavy cruise like this one.

For an extra layer, I brought along my trusty jean jacket and a merino cardigan, plus a lightweight packable rain jacket from Land’s End.

The Jewelry

With simple daytime outfits, I needed to accessorize with eye-catching jewelry, so I pulled from my collection of handmade natural-stone jewelry created by Anne Vaughan Designs. Note that some of these pieces are one-of-a-kind or have been discontinued, so cannot be shopped, but I have included links for those that are still available.

I have quite a bit of this jewelry, so I’ve made cheat sheets for myself for each collection to help me quickly choose the best jewelry for any outfit. Some have selfies wearing the jewelry to remind me of the length of the focal necklace in that collection.

POSTER BLUE MOON copy

For evenings, I picked out some Chico’s jewelry that would look fantastic with the outfits I chose to wear to dinner for this trip. Unfortunately, I didn’t place the order in time, so I missed out. Since I’ve been home, though, I’ve ordered a few of these pieces for future trips.

The Outfits

This cruise was ten days, plus three more days for travel and exploration, so I planned for thirteen days. Most days, I would only need one casual outfit that would take me from day to night. For some evenings, we dined in specialty restaurants, so I planned for that as well.

Casual Outfits

For day, I created the following casual outfits, some for days in the 60s, where I chose longer sleeves and maybe added a jacket or cardigan, and others for days in the low 70s. These outfits would be perfect either for excursions or sea days.

Dressier Outfits

For dinners at specialty restaurants, you will want to dress nicer, so I created five outfits that would be appropriate for specialty dining.

Travel Outfits

I needed two travel outfits, keeping in mind comfort and flexibility in temperature, so layering was a must. I tend to wear my jean jacket while traveling since it is bulkier than a sweater to pack.

Additional Items

In addition to tops, bottoms, and outerwear, I packed a couple of swimsuits with a coverup, underwear, pajamas, and a few accessories from Amazon.

I always travel with this Travelon canvas tote bag with security features. It’s large and roomy with all the right pockets, and it fits perfectly beneath an airline seat.

Whenever we go to Europe, I’m sure to take along my Travelon crossover purse, plus a packable sun hat (just in case) and a travel umbrella for each of us. Bring sunglasses too; the sun in the Mediterranean can be bright, even in fall.

What I Packed vs. What I Actually Wore

Here is a visual of the clothing and shoes that I originally packed for the cruise.

Greece packing list square 3

At the last minute, I made a few changes before we left for the airport, so what I actually wore was slightly different. It turned out that I didn’t want to dress up as much as I thought I would, and I never needed the swimsuits that I packed at all.

Here’s what I actually wore on the trip. I wish I looked as trim and young as the models, but most of us don’t in the real world, do we?

What I Wore November 23 pg 1

For my next trip, I’ve decided I’m going with more patterns. All the solid colors were more versatile, but I felt a little blah.

The merino wool tees from Wool& were fabulous, by the way. I wore them over and over between travel, pre-cruise exploring, and the cruise itself, and they were still as fresh as when I’d packed them. Simply amazing. They’re also very lightweight and resist wrinkling.
