Motorcycle ride around Australia (Harley Davidson)
Exploring a new country, regardless of the mode of transportation, is always an incredible experience. However, crossing Australia, a country as vast as England 31 times, on a motorbike takes adventure to another level. Riding across deserted expanses, following straight lines that stretch as far as the eye can see, and cruising along golden sand beaches make the journey an adventure in its own right. Quentin, a 25-year-old pastry chef, embarked on his first Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand before deciding to tour Australia on a motorbike. In this article, we share his experiences and offer practical advice to help you prepare for your motorcycle road trip.
Table of Contents
Preparing for a ride around Australia on a motorcycle
To embark on a motorcycle tour of Australia, it takes more than just a love for motorcycles and riding for 10 hours a day. You must also be willing to live without too much comfort and have experience riding a motorcycle. Australia is a wild country, with unsealed tracks, animals jumping on the roads, road trains, and other challenges . Any biker will quickly realize that they’ve left their comfort zone. In some isolated areas, help can take 4-5 hours to arrive, so you must be aware of the risks.
To fully appreciate the experience, you must also enjoy traveling solo , although you’ll still meet plenty of people who will be interested in your trip, especially in the Outback if you’re friendly and approachable. Planning your trip according to the seasons is also crucial , as you can’t be in the mountains of Victoria in winter, the Outback in South Australia, or Southern Western Australia and New South Wales in the summer. Additionally, the wet season and cyclones make northern Australia difficult to navigate from October.
You must love riding and exploring, as Australia is a huge country. And you have to be ready to ride in all kinds of weather conditions, such as rain, wind, cold, or heat. However, you should plan your route wisely according to the seasons. If you don’t enjoy riding, it may take you two years to complete the tour of the country!
Invest in quality camping gear, such as a mattress, tent, and sleeping bag. After riding 800 km on a motorcycle, a good night’s sleep can be very useful. Additionally, this equipment can be resold or brought back with you to Europe.
My experience on a Harley Davidson
When he arrived in Australia, he worked for 5 months. Giving him time to plan his trip well and save money. Below, he answers our few questions and tells us all about his road trip of Australia on a Harley Davidson.
During my time in Australia, I worked in NSW and VIC during the spring and summer months, which allowed me to explore the Great Alpine Road, the Great Ocean Road and other scenic routes in the area on my days off. After that, I headed towards WA along the coast and then went up to Darwin in the winter before finally reaching Alice Springs. In the end, I returned to Cairns and then to Sydney to sell my bike in the early spring, which is the ideal time to sell as it is easier to find buyers.
Being on a Working Holiday Visa was a great compromise as it allowed me to travel for 2 or 3 weeks at a time and then work for a month before continuing my travels. Working in various areas of Australia allowed me to discover the different cultures and lifestyles. Locals were always eager to share advice on less touristy places to visit, which was a great way to explore the hidden gems of Australia.
Touring Australia on a motorcycle: A project that had been in my head for a long time
Since I started traveling, I became immediately hooked on the idea of traveling by motorcycle . The feeling of freedom that comes with it is incomparable. Going around Australia had always been a tempting idea, but I was hesitant at first because it is such a big project. However, I eventually realized that it was now or never and decided to go for it. After all, we often regret the things we never try!
Getting ready â How did you prepare for this experience?
To prepare for my motorcycle trip in Australia, I made sure to have prior experience riding motorcycles. After that, I scoured forums for advice and tips from other riders who had been to Australia. I also reached out to people who had ridden there before to gain a better understanding of what to expect. Additionally, I invested in a biker Atlas , which I highly recommend to any rider in Australia. The Atlas provided a list of the top 200 trips to take in the country. It was an invaluable resource during my trip â it was my Bible! ( Australia Motorcycle Atlas with 200 top rides â Hema maps )
Living conditions on the road
On the mechanical side, I was fortunate to have had almost no issues, except for a puncture at the start. I made the decision to purchase a 2017 motorcycle with only 3000 km on the clock . This reduced the likelihood of mechanical problems compared to an older bike. It’s important to maintain your motorcycle regularly, which includes oil changes, air filter replacements, and other necessary upkeep.
When it came to accommodations, I primarily used a tent. Except when I was able to find an affordable hostel or backpacker lodge. I recommend investing in a good quality tent that is lightweight, easy to set up, and provides adequate protection from the elements.
In terms of packing, there are a few essential items you’ll need for your motorcycle trip, such as oil, coolant, and a lock. If you plan on traveling through the Outback, you’ll also need a 5-liter can of gasoline , and a minimum of 5 liters of water , as drinkable water may be scarce or expensive in certain areas. For food, I packed canned goods, fresh fruit, and cereal bars. You may also consider bringing a portable gas cooker for more comfortable cooking, but be aware that it will take up additional space and require more water for cooking and cleaning.
When it comes to camping gear , a good quality tent, sleeping bag, and inflatable pillow are essential. You’ll want to travel light, so make sure to choose lightweight and compact equipment. Keep in mind that comfort may be limited, but the freedom of the open road and the stunning scenery of Australia more than make up for it.
My favourite region
Australia offers a vast array of breathtaking landscapes that are worth exploring on a motorcycle. Although the Outback may seem monotonous, it’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else. Imagine being alone in the middle of nowhere, with no hills or mountains in sight, and having a roadhouse every 200 kilometers. It’s a unique feeling that is hard to describe. The Great Alpine Road in Victoria offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains and lush greenery. Riding through the winding roads of Cape Tribulation in Queensland is an unforgettable experience. And who could forget the enchanting feeling of riding around Uluru – Ayers Rock on a motorcycle? Finally, I can’t miss mentioning the thrill of riding on the pristine beaches of Lucky Bay in Western Australia. All in all, there is something special to be found in every corner of Australia, making it the perfect destination for motorcycle enthusiasts.
Why did I chose this motorcycle model?
When I was planning my trip to Australia, I initially considered getting a trail bike since many parts of the country are known for their off-road terrain. However, after researching more, I realized that there are plenty of long, straight stretches of tarmac where a more comfortable custom-type motorcycle would be better suited. Especially when covering distances of up to 800km in a day. Of course, a trail bike would be more practical on gravel and dirt roads, but traveling alone in remote areas can be dangerous. It’s also recommended to carry a satellite beacon in case of emergencies.
As for choosing a Harley-Davidson , the prices in Australia were much more affordable compared to Europe. Making it a good opportunity for me to take the trip around the country on one. Back home, I ride a Kawa (kz650 from 1980), but I wanted to try something different for this adventure.
My plans for the future
My next big project is to travel around the world by motorcycle! I’m headed to Canada soon, where I’ll be working and preparing for my upcoming adventures. My first project is to go heli-skiing by getting dropped off in the backcountry via helicopter. Then I plan to cross Canada on my motorcycle. After that, I have my sights set on the rugged terrain of northern India , where I hope to explore off-road with a guide.
A few tips while riding around Australia
In Australia, the roads are generally well-maintained. But it’s important to be prepared for various road conditions, especially if you venture off the main roads. Here are some tips to keep in mind while on the road:
- Drive on the left-hand side of the road in Australia.
- Observe the speed limits . The maximum speed limit on highways is typically 110km/h, although it can vary in certain areas. In built-up areas, the speed limit is usually 50 km/h.
- Highways in Australia are typically toll-free. Except around major cities like Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne where electronic tolling is in place. It’s important to pay the toll online, as there are no payment counters on the road sections.
- Be aware of road trains , which are long transport trucks that can be several kilometers long. These vehicles can create significant wind gusts and take longer to stop than regular vehicles.
- Avoid driving at night , especially in rural areas, as wildlife tends to be more active and can pose a hazard to motorists. It’s also important to be aware of the road conditions and hazards, including unpaved roads, flooding and weather conditions.

Road trip in Australia â Where to camp
Thanks Mate I too am planning to ride a lap of Australia in September..no matter what the conditions are..I am 70yrs old and finding the right bike took some doing, on a pension..The lap is mainly sealed road, so even though a CB500x would be the go, the price was beyond me..I am flying in from Siam to see family in Perth. I am also planning a world trip Bangkok to Vladivostok and across to Iran and then back down thru India and Myanmar ..So I thought I would practise on a lap of Australia,, I have settled on a used Honda 1100cc as it has the cruise look of it, rather than the cafe racer look and feel,,and finding a cheap trail bike within a month was just not there..I have a CB1300 so know abit about big road bikes..though I have been riding for over 50yrs and owned everything from a 50cc scooter to a Harley. Thanks for the tips..Always good to hear other stories and routes..take care on the road Mate.. Never know might pass you in mongolia or somewhere..

Whether you are taking a guided motorbike tour or a self guided tour, this type of itinerary is for the mature and senior traveller who are experienced riders. Enjoying a unique motorcycle tour
Odyssey Traveller has assembled a collection of unique motorcycle tours Australia for your riding experience inthe states of Australia. The type of motorcycle trip offered to EXPERIENCED riders is typically between 7 to 21 days whichever of the three different tour type suits you trip to Australia. Our knowledge and experience of the Australian outback allows us to offer to you some of the best locations to visit on a motorcycle tour as well as experiences from breathtaking scenery to learning and appreciating the Aboriginal timeline that runs back to possibly over 120,000 years of settlement and the two hundred years of British and European history. For Odyssey the best riding experience is far from the crowded highways. It is knowing how to share with you the stunning scenery of the diverse landscapes of the outback with stories.
Australia is a big empty continent to explore, once several hours from a major metro then a population of 50 people begins to seem like a major settlement when you arrive to re-fuel and take a break. This is simply riding through stunning scenery where the landforms start as dot on the horizon to become something substantial, where Emus may choose to race you alongside the road or a solitary tree with shade becomes the oasis under which to draw breath and reflect on the triptaken.
The days are long, simply because this is a big country! The riding experience is very different from that of the leading riding experience of Europe whether in Spain, Italy or France, or down to Morocco or riding in New Zealand. The Australian outback even on the unsealed roads is often straight for tens of kilometres at a time, the topography undulating and the gaps between settlements significant. Small group Guided motorbike tours with Odyssey will travel from 60 to a maximum of 650km. On a very rare occasion the tour may require you to ride for 850-900km in a day though this is the exception.
The traffic in regional and outback Australia is little and infrequent. However a 54 metre long road train on a sealed road is unique to the outback. Encountering the road train on a unsealed road in any direction is a riding experience not easily forgotten!
But the road train is ok, it is managing your ride to be off the road, some 30 minutes before dusk and starting the following about 30 minutes after sunrise in the outback to manage the risk of encountering wildlife on the roads. Safety in the outback whether enjoying one of our guided motorbike tours or a self guided motorcycle holiday is key to your enjoyment and we will provide good advice on how to enjoy this adventure from the provision of equipment from Air bag jackets to written comentary on outback safety to ensure you have a positive motorcycle rental experience.
How to plan a motorcycle tour
Odyssey Traveller will manage as your tour operator the majority of the planning logistics for guided motorcycle tours or self guided motorcycle tours in New South Wales , Queensland , the Northern Territory , South Australia , Western Australia or Tasmania and Victoria . Providing you with a bike tour that exceeds your expections from the accommodation, the bikerental and riding gear and local tour guide. You need to bring your helmut, gloves, boots and motorcycle license.
Contact with riders planning a motorcycle trip typically commences 6 to 18 months in advance. Initial enquiries to Odyssey Traveler are about what you think you would like to do and then we begin to share and the decision to take one of the three options. If you simply wish to enjoy winding roads then there are better motorcycle tour companies to contact.
Tour group options for motorcyclists
We have built up a collection of unique motorcylce tours with bikes for the mature and senior experienced rider to enjoy a rich tapestry in the itinerary to interesting places with a history and breathtaking scenery along the road less travelled to be enjoyed ending each day ingood accommodation, good food and drink to be enjoyed as you reflect on the day often with your tour guide.
Many of our rides are a mix of sealed and unsealed roads (paved and upaved roads), this experience is difficult to be avoided in the outback. The unpaved or unsealed road is to be enjoyed , considered as part of the total riding experience. Odyssey would assist the mature and experienced rider with a 1/2 day instruction on riding on unsealed road surfaces as part of its tour program as we leave Sydney for example. This is not off road riding instructions to enable you to âgo bushâ but instruction on being competent on different surfaces such as a range of gravels, sand and red dirt that make the regional road network in Outback Australia. As senior or mature riders we do not provide a support vehicle on our motorcycle tour programs, you are comptent riders on the open road and there is no need for a support vehicle. However, we will on private self gjuided tours provide satelitte based technology to ensure in the event of an emergency all parties can be contacted. And if your wish is to ride one way then we can accomodate these requests and others in the tour prices.
For the mature and experienced rider we offer three motorcycle rental options.The options are;
For the experienced rider this is independent tour where your partner is travelling with a guaranteed tour for up to 3 weeks and each day you ride independent of the coach either solo or with an associate to the destinations on the tour.
Guided motorcycle tours with a tour leader and several other riders who follow a small group tour program.
These Motorbike only tours travel the same program as the escorted small group tours though with their own luggage (We will provide a suggested packing list to assist you in managing space). These programs also start with a 1/2 day instruction on riding on unsealed roads of the outback. Typically there are upto 6 riders plus your tour leader.
Private tour using GPS and minimal support from Odyssey to enjoy a self guided tour.
This type of self guided tour is independent. Beyond your chosen bike we provide, outerwear, panniers, gps with tourprograms and information and safety equipment to allow you to enjoy your adventure into the outback. Before you can commence the motorcycle rental period for a private tour you would need to also attend a 1/2 day briefing on riding on unsealed roads in Outback Australia. On this type of motorcycle holiday Odyssey would have assisted with booking your accommodation, supplying the bike and equipment including panniers.
Prices of motorcycle tours
Whether booking a guided motorcycle tour or one of our self guided motorcycle tours there is pricing that reflects your be-spoke requirements beyond just the motorcycle rental.
In addition to the quoted price for the chosen option as detailed in the tour selected then the additional costs are as follows;

Your program leader not only should be knowledgable about the motorbike ride but the history of the places to be visited, supporting the local guides meet knowledge so as you ride on your understanding of this ancient country is extended beyond the contemporary. Your curiosity is awakened.

Chances are, most motorcycle tours in Australia will start in Sydney, the countryâs oldest city featuring the famous Opera House designed like white sails overlooking the sea. Home to iconic places such as the Bondi Beach, the Darling Harbour, and the Harbour Bridge, Sydney is an excellent starting point for your motorbike tour. Hunter Valley Located just north of Sydney, Hunter Valley is Australiaâs major wine region. Dating back to the 1800's, Hunter Valley wines are best known for the distinct Shiraz and Semillon varieties, and local winemakers happily offer wine tasting experiences and vineyard tours. Whether youâre on a rental bike or joining a guided motorcycle tour in Australia, Hunter Valley is a must if youâre a wine lover â just make sure youâre keeping it within the limits! Blue Mountains Heading West from Sydney, youâll soon begin to wonder at the sandstone plateaus and mountain views as you climb the twisties into the Blue Mountains. This is where the roads seem to have been built with motorcyclists in mind: endless curves and bends with dramatic, rugged scenery unfolding before you and revealing forested slopes, eucalyptus trees, waterfalls, and towering cliffs as well as the famous Three Sisters sandstone rock formation similar to the landscapes of Arizona and New Mexico. The breathtaking wilderness of the Blue Mountains is a bucket list experience on any of the motorcycle tours in Australia. Uluru/Ayers Rock Easily the most recognizable landmark in Australia, the Uluru/Ayers Rock is a massive sandstone rock towering 863 meters above the sea level. Situated just a little over 200 miles southwest of Alice Springs, Uluru is a sacred place for the aboriginal communities, whereas for foreign visitors, itâs simply an astonishing sight to behold. If you have the time to explore the area, bush walks are available here revealing rock art, cave paintings, springs, and waterholes. Uluru is especially spectacular during the sunset when the last rays of the setting sun dye the rock glowering red. Just sixteen miles west of Uluru lies another geological miracle, the Kata Tjuta, better know as Olga or simply, The Olgas. A rock formation of dome-shaped humps, the Olgas are also best viewed at dusk when they change color; there is easy road access and a parking lot with a view of both the Olgas and the Uluru nearby. If youâre thinking of choosing one of the motorcycle tours in Australia, make sure Uluru and the Olgas are on their itinerary â these sites are not to miss while traveling the Down Under. Grampians National Park Australia may be the most famous for its deserts and the remote outback, but it also boasts a majestic mountain range contained within the Grampians National Park. One of the most popular mountaineering and hiking destinations for holidaying Aussies, the Grampaans offer views of the rugged mountains, sandstone rock formations, and pristine, untouched wilderness. Alice Springs The Mecca and Medina for all off-road motorcycle fanatics, Alice Springs is a town located in the very heart of the Australian outback. The off-road racing capital where Australian rider Toby Price emerged to later win the Rally Dakar several times, Alice Springs is the one place you simply must visit on your motorbike tour in Australia. Located in the desert, Alice Springs is also the starting point or a basecamp to explore the nearby Uluru/Ayers Rock and the Devils Marbles, a Mars-like collection of round red rocks balanced like giant bowling balls in the desert. Great Barrier Reef One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef on the East Coast of Australia is the Earthâs largest coral reef, so vast itâs visible from space. Located right off the coast of Queensland, Great Barrier Reef can be reached via airplane to Lady Elliot Island, from where you can take a glass-bottomed boat or go snorkeling to see the Reef up close and personal. Even if you prefer to focus on the roads and the scenery on your motorcycle tour in Australia, seeing the Great Barrier Reef is simply a must.
Practical Information for Touring Australia
Because Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons here are reversed, and the most pleasant time to travel here is April through to September. June, July, and August are the busiest months, and the outback territories see extremely hot temperatures during that time. Your best bet is to choose motorcycle tours in Australia that take place in September and October when you can enjoy the sunny days on the beach as well as explore the desert regions. Australia is one of the more expensive countries to travel: here, expect to spend around $100-150 a day for food, fuel, and accommodation. However, most Australia motorcycle tours offer inclusive packages, so you may save some costs by going on a guided tour. Australia is a very safe country to travel, but be sure to hydrate well and keep in mind that some of the areas, such as the roads leading to Alice Springs, are very remote. Be prepared, carry some tools and spares, and adventure carefully. When it comes to motorcycle choices for Australia, there is no wrong bike. If youâre planning to stay on tarmac, anything from a Harley-Davidson to an adventure bike will do the job perfectly. However, if you intend to get off the road or are tempted to try Australian off-road racing, pick a smaller, lighter dirt bike or a medium-sized dual sport.

Motorcycle Road Trip Through Australia: 4 Top Destinations
(Article by Mike Ray*)
Few countries promise such fantastic motorbiking opportunities as Australia. With endless kilometres of the open road and some spectacular vistas, it’s little wonder that many people come to the nation to enjoy the ultimate motorcycle road trip.
Recently we’ve seen an explosion in the popularity of motorbiking. Motorcyclists and their clubs have been frequently portrayed in movies and the media generally, giving rise to a “biker culture”. This has gone out to influence anything from the looks of other sub-cultures such as punk and heavy-metal to tv shows like Sons of Anarchy and legendary games like GTA. Its influences have even been felt in the iGaming industry too, where a great deal of online pokies in Australia feature slot games that are trying to embrace this feeling of liberty and give players a taste of adventure. So it’s no wonder that more and more people are answering the call of the open road to feel the wind on their faces and observe different sceneries zoom past their eyes.
But what are the must-see destinations in your Australian motorcycle road trip?
Western Australia – Walpole To Albany
We have already revealed that there’s no shortage of great rides in Western Australia . This vast state is packed full of beautiful destinations for a good bike trip. But there’s little denying the fact that the route from Walpole to Albany offers perhaps the best ride.
This trip takes you all the way down the South Coast Highway, and you’ll get to check out numerous quaint small towns on your way. Keep your eye out for oddities like the Denmark Dinosaur World, but ultimately this bike trip is all about the beach.
By the time you get to the coastal city of Albany, you’ll be ready for the perfect picnic on excellent beaches such as Middleton Beach or the quieter Little Beach. After all, you’ll have travelled well over 100 kilometres from Walpole, so you’ll need a break.
Queensland – The Lions Road
The Lions Road is one of the most famous motorbike rides in Australia, so there was no way that we were going to miss this road from our shortlist.
After all, it’s an endlessly enjoyable ride through nearly about 50km of the stunning scenery that takes you across the Queensland/NSW border. The Lions Road was initially built to help farmers move produce but now also serves travellers exploring the lush forests of the Scenic Rim .
There’s plenty of fun to be had in navigating the twists and turns as you pass through the Border Ranges National Park. Just don’t forget to stop off at top cafes like the Shed Cafe at Rathlogan Olive Grove or the Bean To Cafe in Beaudesert.Â
New South Wales – Kangaroo Valley
If you are willing to take your motorbiking up a level, then you should definitely consider heading out to Kangaroo Valley. This twisty route will take you between the imposing Cambewarra and Barrengarry mountains, and the stunning rainforests and surrounding countryside will make the trip a ride to remember.
Some of the highlights include the Hampden Bridge that crosses the Kangaroo River but don’t forget to check out the 822-metre Fitzroy Falls. You can only get here by navigating through the single-lane Illawarra Highway, but it’s all part of Australia’s most beautiful valley and is perfect for a good bike trip.
Tasmania – The West Coast
Tasmania is one of Australia’s overlooked gems when it comes to motorbikes. But there are many reasons to head to the island, as everything from the agreeable weather conditions to the well-kept roads and relative lack of traffic make Tasmania a biker’s paradise.
There are many places to enjoy on this island state, but we’d recommend taking a trip down the wild and astonishing West Coast. As soon as you leave Hobart via the Derwent Bridge, you’ll be treated to magnificent waterfalls, old mining towns, and some seriously unique landscapes.
We’d recommend taking a slight detour through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park . This is home to endless mountains, gorges and tranquil rivers, and would make for the perfect stopping off point for yet another relaxed picnic on the road.

5 Tips To Tour Australia On A Motorcycle During (Their) Summers
Exploring the vastness of Australia from coast to coast is one of those special things that you must try at least once in your lifetime, and if you love touring on a motorcycle, the open stretches of Australian road will not disappoint you. The best time to visit Australia is during their summers (December to February), which is winter in the northern hemisphere, and that also makes for a great winter escape vacation if you reside above the equator. Here are 5 of the most important tips that you need to know about touring Australia on a motorcycle.
5 Tips for Australian Motorcycle Tours
1. stay hydrated and protect your skin.
Summer temperature in Australia can reach as high as 35 degree Celsius, and we strongly recommend that you donât venture outdoors during the middle of the day especially if you are not used to such high temperatures. According to the travel advisory issued by the Australian tourism department, the summer sun can burn your skin in less than 15 minutes! So, always make sure to cover your skin with a high SPF (>30) sunscreen lotion and stay hydrated by drinking water whenever you get the opportunity. Look for symptoms of dehydration such as headache and lack of focus and take necessary precaution to avoid being under the sun unnecessarily. A good way to avoid the strong sun is to plan your rides early in the morning, and stay indoors during the mid-day till 3:00 PM. On average, the sun sets by 7:30 PM during summer, which means you get quite a lot of time to cover ground even if you resume your ride after the hottest time of the day.
2. Plan your rides (especially if you are touring the âTop Endâ)
The Northern Territory of Australia, also commonly known as the Top End, is famous for its waterfalls and bustling tropical wildlife that comes alive during the summers (from the beginning of November). Tourists love to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site – Kakadu National Park, famous for glimpses of aboriginal culture and amazing biodiversity. Apart from Kakadu, the Top End draws tourists to its other national parks, namely, Elsey, Nitmiluk and Gregory â all of which are great spots to explore. Being on a motorcycle, you need to be prepared for the tropical rains in the region during this time. Be sure to keep your luggage covered and have appropriate tires on the motorcycle to tackle the occasional muddy patches of off-road sections. Itâs also a good idea to find out whether the roads exist because rain water often submerges unpaved roads here.
3. Watch for the speed cameras
Speed limits in Australia are strictly reinforced which means you need to keep an eye on your speed limit and stay within the demarcated maximum. One thing that trips travelers from the United States and Europe is that speed limits are kilometers per hour instead of mph. If you fail to abide by the speed limits there are speed trap cameras placed all along the highway which will definitely catch you and penalize you.
4. Brush up your outback survival skills
The Australian Outback is a particularly challenging place and it is very sparsely populated, which means if you get into trouble it’s all guts & wits that will get you out of trouble! Most of the road related injuries in the Outback happen because of unpaved road surfaces so you need to have a motorcycle that is worthy of tackling those challenges. Also, it is a good idea to never ride alone and have somebody accompany you on your trip to the Outback, preferably someone with camping skills and who knows his or her way around motorcycles. Make sure to get updated maps (youâll need paper maps, because the internet connectivity is iffy at best) and plan your route accordingly. Carry a motorcycle repair kit, and enough food and water to last you at least a couple of days even if you do not plan to be out for more than 9 hours at a stretch.
5. Learn a little about Australian motorcycles
The Australian automobile landscape is completely different from what you would expect if you are an American or a European visiting Australia for the first time. While you might get quite a few common automobile brands, there is a vast difference in the models and makes of vehicles available here. BMW GS1250s, Tiger Triumphs, Africa Twins or Yamaha Teneres may not be as easily available as you might expect, which means you will need to find a compatible machine if you do not already have your own motorcycle. It is also a good idea to acquire an international driving license from the Automobile Association in your country before arriving here with intentions of riding or driving around.
Last but not least, getting the basics right can completely change your travel experiences. One of those is getting the best accommodation in Australia for your budget, and the second is staying safe during your motorcycling trips, which is why we strongly recommend that you wear the proper riding gear such as a Safest Motorcycle Helmet , gloves and a pair of riding boots.

Planning your motorcycle trip around Australia
Most Aussies love to trip around Australia towing their camper trailer or caravan. Bike riders however, couldnât think of anything worse than being cooped up in a 4WD or a caravan. Not when you have the open road ahead of you and all the time in the world to enjoy it on your bike.
Travelling around Australia on your motorbike isnât for the fainthearted, but if you love discovering our wonderful country and you donât mind roughing it a bit at night (though you could pull into a motel!), then a road trip on your bike is one of lifeâs little pleasures.
Tips for your Aussie bike trip
Itâs always sensible to plan your route, particularly if you want to travel in the heat of the summer or during the wet season in the Top End. You can plan your entire trip or just a vague route in the general direction you want to head. You can even make it up as you go along, chatting to other road users and taking side trips as the feeling takes you.
Sometimes you want to cover a big distance, just for the fun of being on the road and other times you will want to explore a certain area and discover the local sights. Whatever your route, you need to take the right type of clothing for your trip, something lightweight and breathable is fine. Donât forget sunblock and as much water as you can carry, as well as your camping gear â swag, tent and some basics for cooking on the road. Bush camping or pulling into free campsites along your route is the best way to see our lovely country and save your money for fuel!
Depending on how long you will be away, at some point you will need to head for a shower and even a laundry for clean clothes. Most paid camp sites have these facilities and the fee for a non-powered site is usually very minimal, so it pays to book in along the way and treat yourself to a shower and clean clothes.
You can also use free WIFI at libraries and McDonalds along the way, which is useful if you need to keep in contact with your family or business. This is also an easy way to keep on top of your spending, because you can access your online banking and your credit card to make sure that you have enough funds to finish your trip in comfort.

5 of the best motorcycle rides in Australia
This article was originally published in June 2018 and updated in June 2023.
Many Aussie roads feel purpose built for motorcycle riding, but some stand out. From scenic bends across mountain ranges, adventures through rainforests and cruising alongside the ocean, these are our top picks for an unforgettable ride.
1. The Oxley Highway from Wauchope to Walcha, NSW
This 163km stretch features exhilarating hairpin turns up and over the famous Great Dividing Range through thick rainforest and trees entwined in vines.
This ride not only offers breathtaking scenery including mountain views, it also offers a variety of corners making it a truly enjoyable ride.
Late spring or early summer is likely to offer ideal riding weather for most looking to take this bucket-list trip. This timing usually not only offers a comfortable warm temperature but is also likely to be early enough to beat the start of the rainy season.
2. The Great Ocean Road, VIC
Our team votes this as one of the most beautiful roads in Australia with around 120km of smooth asphalt stretching from Torquay to Glanaire, past the 12 Apostles.
While beautiful, it can be challenging for some riders. Look out for congested convoys of tourists stopping and starting along the way for photo opportunities. Roads are narrow, and the buses can be wide, so riding carefully and staying alert to vehicles is key.
3. The Black Spur, VIC
Famed for its lush tall rainforests and giant ferns lining the road, this 30km ride lies between the towns of Healesville and Narbethong and is part of the Maroondah Highway.
Sweeping corners and thick surrounding foliage offer an unforgettable ride for motorcycle riders looking for a unique experience. On this road, riders navigate directly through the middle of a rainforest, underneath a canopy.
This can be a popular spot though and attract more drivers during weekends and summer months. So, stay alert in the tight turns if you’re riding in peak times.
4. Kangaroo Valley, NSW
There’s a couple of pretty routes to Kangaroo Valley that are also fun to ride. But riding via the Macquarie Pass will offer a view of an 822m waterfall that can add a truly special highlight to your trip.
The 8km section of the Illawarra Highway is a climb up a single-lane, twisty road that takes you the lookout at Fitzroy Falls.
5. The Lions Road, Scenic Rim, QLD
The Lions Road is a stunning 96km link from Beaudesert to Kyogle in the Scenic Rim region of the Queensland hinterland, and is well known in the bike world.
This trip is ideal for adventure seekers. It takes riders through local towns, the rainforests of Border Ranges National Park and Running Creek and Grady’s Creek.

Ride around Australia
Everything you need to know to circumnavigate Australia. BYO Map
M y copy of Scenic Wonders of Australia was published in 1976, only three years after the opening of the Sydney Opera House â an edifice that immediately shot to the top of the list of attractions to visit, bumping the Sydney Harbour Bridge to number two.
A quick scan of the internet recently confirmed my suspicion that very little has changed in the past 40 years.
The must-sees are as they were, jiggling up and down the same top 10 list: Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, the Kimberley, Melbourne, Kakadu, the Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains and Daintree.
And all these scenic wonders, bar Uluru, are virtually on the same street â our National Highway 1.
For the most part itâs a relatively safe, sealed and signposted route that runs over 15,000km circumnavigating the continent. Along the way there is a wide choice of accommodation, from five-star resorts to free overnight rest areas. Good food is generally available, and at worst youâll be able to score a microwaved meat pie at a 24/7 servo. And, while itâs wise to refuel whenever your tank falls below half, a fuel range of 300km will (mostly) keep you mobile.
But there are a few things you should think about before you set offâŚ
Iâve often been asked what motorcycle would be the most suitable to lap Oz. Most adventure bikes with dual-sport tyres will be comfortable over the long stretches and tractable in the parks and forests. But around-Australia rides have been done with a Hodaka Combat Wombat, a 1972 Harley Sportster, postie bikes and Honda Goldwings, so donât get hung up on the choice. The BMW GS range has an enviable reputation for quality and reliability, from the original R80/GS to the latest R1200GS Rallye X. Even the smaller F800GS will handle anything that our harsh land can throw at it, and the reason you see so many Kawasaki KLR650s and Suzuki DR650s in the outback is because they can be relied on to cover maximum country at minimum cost â leaving more coin for a good steak and a good bottle of red.
Take advice on tyre choice for your particular model. While youâll want something with stability in the gravel, you donât need aggressive knobbies that will shred after two days on the blacktop. Beyond the black stump, your biggest potential problem will be a flat tyre. This can usually be prevented by fitting ultra-heavy-duty tubes before departure. Take a spare set with you, and donât forget tyre levers and a hand pump. For tubeless tyres, take a repair kit and know how to use it.
Itâs essential to test your set-up before you head off. You shouldnât be carrying so much additional weight as to need major suspension adjustment, but monitor tyre pressures and static sag. Then spend two full days on your bike riding at least 500km. If your arse aches you need a more comfortable seat, and if youâre a touch sore across the shoulders consider fitting handlebar risers. If youâre not fighting fit after a two-day ride, youâll be a wreck after a week in the saddle. An upright riding position is the key to comfort over long distances.
I keep seeing images of large adventure bikes toting aluminium panniers and topboxes; and advertisements boasting more than 100 litres of luggage capacity. Disregarding the potential weight penalty, all I can remember about riding such beasts is the wind resistance and buffeting in high wind areas; and the sphincter tightening when facing down a road train on a narrow beef development road. My reckoning is that if you canât fit all your kit into a pair of soft panniers that rise no higher than your seat â leaving room on the rack for a fuel bladder when necessary â then youâre on the wrong form of transport. And while I realise that riders in advertisements never drop their bikes, I find it hard to believe they never dent or scratch the panniers.
These days thereâs a great range of do-it-all gear. There are three-in-one jackets incorporating a lightweight waterproof outer and a warm removable fabric inner that combined to give you one warm, waterproof jacket. Helmets can adjust to various conditions, just make sure your lid is perfectly comfortable. And make sure your boots are waterproof, cos a few days of wet feet sucks â and hurts! Clothes-wise, all you really need is a pair of lightweight quick-dry shorts, the same in longs, a polo, a jumper and a pair of runners. Anything else is superfluous, though you should note that runners are not considered suitable footwear in the discoteque at Fitzroy Crossing.
Accidents happen, so itâs in your best interests to carry a personal first-aid kit, even if youâre travelling alone â which, incidentally, is not such a good idea. Even when youâre staying on the bitumen there are some long and lonely stretches of highway, and should you come to grief you would much rather have a compos mentis mate seeking assistance on the phone than being forced to wait for assistance. If you do insist on going on your Pat Malone, emergency beacons are very affordable these days, but do your research to make sure its frequency will work where youâre going.Â
Annual Leave
With a few shortcuts, itâs possible to ride the full length of Highway 1 at legal speeds in a fortnight. However, to really appreciate the experience takes at least six weeks. And you still wonât have passed within 1000km of its spiritual centre â Uluru. Nor ridden the fabulous mountain passes of our countryâs extremities in Tasmania. And you also wanted to take a quick look at Kangaroo Island, and that Auto Museum at Birdwood, and the Super Pit at KalgoorlieâŚ
Donât leave it until youâre actually rolling to discover youâve run out of time. Although a GPS and a SpotTracker are life-savers once youâre out there, no electronic device will match an outline plan with the aid of a good map. HEMA maps are excellent, and Aussie company Westprint has good detail maps of legendary outback tracks such as the Birdsville and Strzelecki.
Fly out, fly in
These days there are many transport companies that will move your bike around the country reliably and economically between major centres â especially if thereâs a group of you needing transport â and you get to fly, avoiding the unnecessary boring sections. Of course there are those riders who will claim there are no boring bits on a bike, but my guess is that not many of them have spent more than 20 consecutive eight-hour days in the saddle. No matter how scenic the ride, it can become âsame old same oldâ.
Lap sectors
I have friends who are currently on their third year of a âround the world ride. Twice now, when winter has effectively closed the northern hemisphere, theyâve stowed their bike for a few months and flown home to Australia. With relatively inexpensive airfares connecting most population centres, a lap of Oz could take the same form. And make the most of the weather, particularly when we live on a continent where riding above the Tropic of Capricorn between November and March is unbearable and often impossible, and riding across the Great Australian Bight in mid-winter is insufferable. Breaking your lap of Oz into several three-week, 3000km slices makes it easier to digest. For those of you living on the east coast, a sojourn in the Apple Isle in November or March would be an ideal rehearsal. And for a finale thereâs always The Red Centre.
Sleeping arrangements
Accommodation  .
While camping retains an aura of rugged romance, thereâs actually very little to be said for it, particularly if you have to do it yourself.
In the âolden daysâ some country accommodation wasnât much better than camping, and was difficult to book ahead with any reliability. Now booking pub accommodation is really easy; negotiating rates, checking photos of the pub, confirmation and payment can all be done online.
In my opinion, camping really is just natureâs way of promoting pubs.
Caravan parks Â
One thing the grey nomads have done for us all is improve the quality and services offered by camp grounds and caravan parks â quality that once varied considerably.
Now most caravan parks are oases in the wilderness, with clean facilities, mini-supermarkets and many with dining facilities, bars and swimming pools. What more could a camper ask for? Well, you could ask for a cabin â to sleep two, four, six or eight â and probably get one judging by most of the establishments Iâve visited. All with your own refrigerator.
It just demonstrates that even camping ground proprietors realise that camping is for the birds.
Of course itâs possible to lighten the load and take a back-up vehicle for support. Somewhere to stow all the swags, a huge tent, camp chairs and a table, eating utensils, an entrenching tool, lots of food, a huge water tank, and a brace of 12V batteries to keep the piss cold for days on end. You can set up camp anywhere with almost all the facilities available at the average country pub. But when thereâs a pub already there, why bother? Particularly when you donât have to pack it all up and take it with you the next day.
Home stays Â
Over the past decade, more and more property owners have been offering accommodation to those who venture off the beaten track. Usually these facilities are self-contained cabins set up for families who take their own food and bedding. That is, thereâs generally no catering â and certainly no bar. However, if youâre seeking a different experience, many of these station stays will provide dinner and breakfast by prior arrangement. Pre-pay and your hosts might lay on a supply of icy cold beers and have a campfire waiting for the flick of your match.
Should a station stay not be advertised, itâs worth asking if the homestead can lay on a barbie, a few beers, some sort of bed for the night and top up your tanks the next morning. Just donât expect them to accept cards.
But wait there is more
Not only are nine of Australiaâs 10 âmust seesâ within cooee of Highway 1, so is my own short-list. Heading clockwise from Gassit HQ in Melbourne, thereâs the Head of Bight (near Nullarbor), closely followed by whatâs left of Eucla. Then itâs around to The Pinnacles on the western seaboard, and inland to Karijini National Park. In the north-west, Cape Leveque has more going for it than any other remote seascape, then thereâs Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles) and Australiaâs inland sea, Lake Argyle. On the Gulf, the lost city near Lorella Springs is no longer lost (and thereâs a similar rock formation near Cape Crawford on Highway 1). Over on the Pacific coast, Karumba is the only place to fully enjoy a plate of gulf prawns and a schooner of NQ Lager; Cairns is the hub for the ride up to Karumba, the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas, and the Gillies Range Road to Atherton. The Pacific Highway between Brisbane and Sydney has been largely supplanted by expressway, but the âold roadâ is a riderâs delight. And, while neither are near Highway 1, youâve not done Australia until youâve ridden around Mount Panorama and done the same at Phillip Island.
