Bud cauley's comeback, it's still knapp time, a lurking rory mcilroy and more from friday at 2024 cognizant classic, share this article.

The first two rounds of the Cognizant Classic at PGA National’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, are in the books and we have a clustered leaderboard heading into moving day.

The name leading the way, however, is Bud Cauley, who is making just his second PGA Tour start since returning to action after a three-plus-year absence thanks to multiple injuries, including some from a car accident.

Cauley, who made the cut at the WM Phoenix Open last month, signed for a 6-under 65 on Friday, good enough to get him to 11-under total and the 36-hole lead all to himself, one clear of Garrick Higgo and Austin Eckroat at 10 under.

“I gave myself enough time to prepare at home before I started playing again,” Cauley told the media. “My expectation was to come out and compete, and I felt like my game was in a good spot.

“Saying it is one thing, doing it is another. I’m really happy with how I’ve played. I feel like my game has been trending in the right way. I’ve been hitting the ball well and just needed some scoring things to start.”

He kept the card clean, tacked on five birdies and is now in position to complete one of the best Tour stories of the last decade.

“There were a lot of times where I thought that my career was over. To be back here playing and playing well, it’s nice. It just makes me that much more happy that I kept after it and didn’t stop trying.”

Round 2 was suspended due to darkness – 14 players didn’t finish, but there will be 13 returning because Chandler Phillips withdrew – so third-round tee times are unavailable until play finishes Saturday morning.

If you missed any of Friday’s action, no worries, we have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know from the second day at the Cognizant Classic.

Tom Kim finds consistency

Kim missed the cut earlier this season at the American Express, but has since found some consistency in his game. He’s posted finishes of T-31, T-17 and T-24 in three starts since and is in the mix after two rounds at PGA National’s Champion Course.

Back-to-back 68s have Kim at 6 under, five shots of the lead.

“Obviously this course is very penalizing, and when the wind is up like this, you’ve got to play really, really solid,” he told the media after signing his card Friday. “I feel like I put myself in a lot of good positions, scrambled really well and grinded it out. Pleased with the first two days.”

Kim made birdies on both par 5s on the back nine – his front on Day 2 – and made the turn with a 2-under 34. Despite a bogey at the par-3 seventh, Kim made birdies on Nos. 5 and 9.

Rickie Fowler impresses in the wind

Fowler’s round ended on a sour note with bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8 to close out his day – he teed off on No. 10 – but he managed to make a move on a breezy day with a 4-under 67.

He’s long been known as one of the better wind players on Tour, and he showed that on his front nine, starting with an eagle on the par-5 10th. Fowler added three more circles to the card on Nos. 13, 17 and 18 to go out with a 5-under 31.

Fowler is seven shots back after two days and is hoping the wind hangs around over the weekend.

“Hopefully wind will stay up and that’ll kind of get me back in a good position for the weekend,” he said.

It's Knapp Time (again)

2024 Cognizant Classic

Jake Knapp earned his first career PGA Tour win last week at the Mexico Open and was immediately rewarded with a signature pairing alongside Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds of the Cognizant Classic.

And he went shot-for-shot with him over the first 36.

After a first-round 3-under 68 on Thursday, Knapp made five birdies during a bogey-free round on Day 2 and sits 8 under for the tournament and three shots back of the lead.

Following up a win on Tour is difficult, even more so for a rookie, so what Knapp is doing at PGA National is cool to see.

Rory McIlroy loves being back in Florida

After a win in Dubai, McIlroy hasn’t had his game in two Tour starts. He finished outside the top 60 at the shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and tied for 24th at the Genesis Invitational.

But maybe the warm Florida sun was just what he needed.

McIlroy followed up his opening 4-under 68 with another on Friday and is three shots off the lead. With big names lacking from the top of the leaderboard, all eyes will be on the Northern Irishman on moving day.

Shot of the day

On the par-3 seventh hole, Dunlap hit a cut to a front right hole location, and his ball took one bounce before rolling out and finding the bottom of the cup .

“I loved a 7-iron for some reason, and Hunter convinced me to hit the 8,” he said after his round. “I don’t know if you can hear it on the video, but I said right before, I’m like, Hey, 175 gets there, right? He’s like, Yep, it’s perfect. So all the credit goes to him on that one.”

Rory McIlroy begins his PGA Tour season this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, live on Sky Sports , with the Northern Irishman set for a packed schedule in the run-up to The Masters.

McIlroy said at the start of 2024 that he intended to play more ahead of The Masters and make Augusta National his "ninth or 10th event", an increase on recent years, with the change aiming to increase his hopes of claiming an elusive fifth major.

The former world No 1 opened the year with back-to-back appearances on the DP World Tour, finishing second to Tommy Fleetwood at the Dubai Invitational ahead of claiming a record fourth Hero Dubai Desert Classic victory the following week, but now switches his focus to the PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland poses with his trophy after he won the final round of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024.

McIlroy has only played the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am once in his career, missing the cut on debut in 2018, although returns to feature in a stacked field including Scottie Scheffler, FedExCup champion Viktor Hovland and 14 of the world's top 15 players.

This week's appearance in California marks the start of at least six tournaments over the next 10 weeks ahead of The Masters, where he will once again arrive as one of the pre-tournament favourites to win his only missing major and complete the career Grand Slam.

Relive Rory McIlroy's two wins, which saw him claim a fifth Race to Dubai title, and his starring role in Europe's Ryder Cup triumph.

McIlroy's route to possible Masters success

McIlroy increased his busy early-season schedule by committing to two more PGA Tour tournaments over the past week, the Cognizant Classic - formerly known as the Honda Classic - and the Valero Texas Open, which currently makes The Masters his ninth planned event of the year.

He skipped The Sentry in Hawaii at the start of the season to begin his year on the DP World Tour but will feature in the next two PGA Tour Signature Events, starting with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week ahead of the Genesis Invitational in California from February 15-18.

How McIlroy made history with Dubai win

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland tees off on 8th hole during the final round of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024. (

The 34-year-old will be part of the first mixed edition of The Match when he competes alongside Max Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang, with the 12-hole floodlit skins match taking place at The Park in West Palm Beach on Monday February 26.

McIlroy makes his first competitive visit to PGA National since 2018 later that week for the Cognizant Classic, an event he won when it was called the Honda Classic in 2012, with the tournament the first of three consecutive Florida-based starts.

He will tee it up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (March 7-10) and The Players (March 14-17), which are both Signature Events and tournaments where McIlroy is a former champion, then is currently scheduled to take two weeks off ahead of the Valero Texas Open (April 4-7).

McIlroy missed the cut in his 2022 appearance ahead of his runner-up finish at Augusta National that month, with the world No 2 electing to tee it up the week before a major once again to try and be as sharp as possible for The Masters.

Rory McIlroy 2014 PGA Championship win

"My big thing about Augusta is just to go in there playing well," McIlroy told Golf Digest . "The weeks before are important just to get me feeling like I'm in good form. This year, in fact, I'm going to play more before the Masters. I'll hopefully be a bit sharper and know exactly where my game really is."

What is different at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am?

The tournament's elevation to a Signature Event means a reduced field than previous years, with just 80 players in action and amateurs only included for the first two days.

Max Homa lets his mom down, but Rory McIlroy thrives under lights at ‘The Match’

Mcilroy wins skins game at the park against homa, lexi thompson and rose zhang; $2.1 million and counting to charity.

Change Text Size

Max Homa knew a 3-footer after dark is different. So he tried his best to elude it.

“You guys are bad people … my mom’s watching,” Homa told his fellow competitors as he lined up a short par putt at the eighth hole during Monday’s ninth edition of “Capital One’s The Match.”

“Could you imagine this?” Homa continued. “My mom’s going to watch me three-putt from 15 feet.”

Moments later, his 3-footer lipped out on the left side. “Had that feeling,” he said afterward.

Homa’s mom wasn’t alone in watching her son vexed by The Park’s lighted setup. The Match’s ninth edition featured a 12-hole skins game between Homa, Rory McIlroy, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang, with all proceeds to benefit charity. The foursome didn’t hold back in delivering barbs, whether self-deprecating or toward each other, in a spirited competition under the lights in West Palm Beach, Florida.

McIlroy won six of the first eight skins, but the final four skins carried over, setting up a closest-to-the-pin challenge from 100 yards, worth $1.1 million to charity, to determine the winner. McIlroy went first and stuffed a wedge to 4 feet, an effort that couldn’t be matched by his fellow three competitors. The final tally: McIlroy with 10 skins (worth $1.9 million), Thompson with two skins (worth $200,000).

The Match’s nine editions have combined to raise more than $41 million for charity.

“How much fun it was, being out here with Max and Rose and Lexi, and playing at such a great facility,” McIlroy said, “all these people out here, the atmosphere, it was a really cool night.”

“What we’ve seen with what The Park is doing, and we can feel it here,” McIlroy continued, “so many kids, creating so many opportunities to get into the game of golf, it’s really cool.”

The Park charmed The Match participants in its first major broadcast showcase, less than a year after the former West Palm Beach Golf Course reopened for play – following an extensive redesign by Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and Dirk Ziff. The Park’s 18-hole championship course is complemented by a nine-hole lighted course and putting course, promoting access and inclusivity for South Floridians to fall in love with the game of golf. In contrast to typical Florida marshland, The Park presents minimal water hazards; alternatively, the challenges come via undulating fairways that run off into thick fescue areas, and multi-tier greens.

These greens grew particularly feisty as Monday evening progressed, with night golf’s charms taking the forefront. Green speeds varied as temperatures lowered into the evening; creeping dew made short putts a notably vexing proposition. Nor was course management a straightforward task; although the course was amply lit, players had trouble adjusting to distances and directions – Homa called “Fore, I think?” after his second shot at the par-4 fourth (from a fairway bunker) sailed left of the green. Zhang striped her tee shot down the middle at the par-4 ninth but wasn’t sure of its fate until she received word it was dead center. “Am I chilling?” she asked. “Let’s goooo!” she replied when the answer was affirmative.

Rose Zhang escapes waste area and drills birdie putt at Capital One’s The Match

Not even short-iron shots were safe from the evening’s distance challenges.

“That went long?” Homa asked in disbelief when told he went long-left at the 136-yard, par-3 11th. “I don’t like the groaning.”

It was the continuation of a frustrating stretch for Homa, who was forced to scramble at times but took the adversity in stride, maintaining his trademark dry wit throughout.

“Just give me one cool thing,” Homa remarked after missing a 15-foot birdie try that would have won the par-4 10th.

“Everyone out here is like, ‘Man, this Max guy hates charity. Just giving zero dollars back.’”

His name might not be tied to a direct contribution, but Homa was certainly part of a winning evening at The Park.

Max Homa drains lengthy birdie putt at Capital One’s The Match

“This was amazing,” Homa said afterward. “Here at The Park, this is what golf should be more like … The golf course is amazing in itself, but to see the excitement around this place, I’m really excited for the future of hopefully building more places like this, but this is a tremendous start.”

Here’s a quick look at how the skins were won at the ninth edition of “Capital One’s The Match” …

Thompson won the short par-4 second hole with an eagle, draining a 30-footer from behind the green to win two skins worth a total $200,000 to charity.

After the third hole carried over, the par-4 fourth hole was played as a one-club challenge; McIlroy made a winning par, worth two skins and $200,000 to charity, after selecting 5-wood. He found the fairway and then played a swooping scissor-slice from 175 yards that caught the green’s right side and ran into the fringe. He said afterward that he would have normally played 8-iron. He made do and two-putted from some 50 feet, lagging to 3 feet and draining the par putt; he said afterward that he often practices putting with a 5-wood with putting coach Brad Faxon. It paid dividends here.

Rory McIlroy uses 5-wood to par hole and win skin at Capital One’s The Match

McIlroy won two more skins with an up-and-down birdie at the par-5 sixth, totaling $300,000 to charity, to which Homa replied, “Proud of you.”

Zhang nearly got on the board at the par-5 seventh, draining a 15-footer for birdie before chirping McIlroy that his 10-footer had looked like 5 feet from further back. McIlroy took the shot in stride and drained the putt to match the hole.

Rose Zhang judges slope well to set up birdie at Capital One’s The Match

Then came the eighth, where McIlroy won two more skins, worth $300,000 to charity, with a two-putt par from 30 feet, as neither of his three fellow competitors could match the par. “I sort of feel bad, but sort of don’t,” McIlroy quipped afterward.

Thompson had a 23-foot birdie try to win the 11th, worth three skins and $600,000, but it missed to set the stage for the mega-stakes 12th hole (worth $500,000 on its own) to total $1.1 million.

“Hang in there,” McIlroy asked of his high-draw second shot into the par-5 12th hole. It did, the ball landing on the front fringe and releasing to set up a 25-foot eagle try.

“I can’t understand why people talk to their golf ball,” said commentator Charles Barkley.

McIlroy heard this query through an earpiece and smiled. “I can’t help it, Chuck,” he replied.

McIlroy couldn’t convert his eagle; Homa and Zhang each made birdie to set the stage for a closest-to-the-pin to determine The Match’s ninth winner. As he had for most of the evening, McIlroy stepped up and delivered from 100 yards to 4 feet. Neither Homa nor Thompson could get closer, and Zhang had the last attempt; her ball tracked toward the hole but checked up some 8 feet short, just a bit outside McIlroy’s.

Rory McIlroy 2024 schedule: PGA Tour, DP World Tour and majors

Rory mcilroy's early playing schedule for 2024 has been revealed on the pga tour and dp world tour. .

Andy Roberts's picture

Rory McIlroy's early 2024 schedule is shaping up.

Many believe McIlroy will have every chance to do just that in 2024, especially after he recently decided to step away from his player director duties on the PGA Tour policy board.

McIlroy's new tech-infused TGL with Tiger Woods has also been pushed back to a 2025 start, which will also free up additional time for him to work hard on his golf game.

But as we have already touched upon above, McIlroy will be most eager to bring his A-game to the season's first major at The Masters from April 11-14, as he goes in search of golf history.

Only Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player , Jack Nicklaus and Woods have completed the career grand slam in the modern era.

McIlroy is using a brand new TaylorMade Qi10 LS Driver  in 2024.

McIlroy played his first tournament of 2024 at the Dubai Invitational, where he finished runner-up.

He followed that with his 19th victory on the DP World Tour at the Dubai Desert Classic.

McIlroy is bidding to win the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai for a third straight year and sixth time overall.

He is also going in search of a fourth FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy will fancy his chances of winning multiple times on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour this season, especially with Jon Rahm now having moved over to LIV Golf.

Rory McIlroy, making season debut at Pebble Beach, eager for golf world to reunite

Rory mcilroy is making his debut on tour this week after his dp world tour win earlier this month.

The new PGA Tour season is about a month old headed into the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week, which marks the second designated event of the year.

But the vibes on California's Monterey Peninsula, as more players leave for LIV Golf while a deal between the leagues is still pending, are a bit off. Even winning at Pebble Beach this week doesn’t mean as much as it used to.

“I'd like to win here and stand up with a trophy on 18 green and know that I've beaten all of the best players in the world, so yeah,” Rory McIlroy said Tuesday when asked if a win would feel diminished.

While the field this week is definitely stronger than most, McIlroy’s logic makes sense. England ’s Tyrrell Hatton, who is ranked No. 16 in the Official World Golf Rankings, became the latest to make the jump to LIV Golf this week ahead of its season opener in Mexico . Hatton joined Jon Rahm’s team after he left for LIV Golf late last year.

McIlroy said he spoke with Hatton on Sunday about his decision to go to LIV Golf, and much like he was with Rahm, he was supportive. That’s a big change from how McIlroy was just a few months ago.

“At the end of the day, I think I'm done with trying to change people's minds and trying to get them to see things a certain way or try to see things through my lens because that's ultimately not the way the world works,” McIlroy said. “You know, these are guys that I respect and that I've spent a lot of time with, and if that's what they feel is the best decision for them, then I'm going to, you know, be supportive of that decision and let them go and do their own thing.”

The PGA Tour, LIV Golf, the DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia ’s Public Investment Fund are supposed to be finalizing an agreement for their proposed partnership. They set a deadline for that to be completed by the end of 2023 , though it was extended indefinitely after no deal was reached in time.

The PGA Tour is reportedly close to reaching a $3 billion investment deal with Strategic Sports Group, though it’s unclear how the PIF and LIV Golf would factor into that investment or what it would mean for the future partnership. Although McIlroy isn’t involved in the decision-making process anymore — he stepped down from the Tour’s board last year — he’s more than ready for the deal between the Tour and the Strategic Sports Group to be finished.

“I feel like this thing could have been over and done with months ago,” McIlroy said. “I think just for all of our sakes that the sooner that we sort of get out of it and we have a path forward, the better.”

McIlroy won twice on Tour last season, first at The CJ Cup in October and then at the Genesis Scottish Open. While he failed to win a major championship once again — it has been a decade since he has done so — McIlroy finished inside the top 10 in his last 10 starts to close out the season. He finished second at the Dubai Invitational earlier this month before winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for a fourth time on the DP World Tour.

McIlroy is currently ranked No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings, behind only Scottie Scheffler. There are a number of scenarios in which McIlroy could jump Scheffler and reclaim the No. 1 ranking this week, including with a win Sunday.

But until the sport is all back together, at least in McIlroy’s eyes, that won't mean as much as it used to.

“It would be much better being together and moving forward together for the good of the game. That's my opinion of it,” he said. “So to me, the faster that we can all get back together and start to play and start to have the strongest fields possible, I think, is great for golf.”

Rory McIlroy has an intriguing idea for future PGA Tour events

Rory McIlroy dreams of the day he can just focus on playing golf.

But that day is unlikely to arrive anytime soon.

The truth is, McIlroy’s too deep in it to fully extract himself. Change arrived to the professional golfing world when LIV burst through the door a year ago. The PGA Tour’s multifaceted response has unfolded in the months since then. And few people have been more involved in that response than McIlroy.

The latest chapter for McIlroy and Co. came earlier this week, when the PGA Tour informed its members of a new structure that will make eight of its “designated events” limited fields with no cuts. The announcement has been met with a mixed, if generally positive, reaction. On one hand, the changes further codify an elite tour within the PGA Tour, but on the other, it ensures the best pros will be playing for the biggest prizes.

“I needed a hard reset at the end of last year. I was exhausted,” McIlroy said on Friday after posting a second-round 69 that left him T20 heading to the weekend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational . There’s no doubt his focus has been divided this week, too, finishing off the behind-the-scenes work that led to this point. He finished last season as the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup champion but also as its de facto spokesman. That mantle actually seemed to help his golf — it was one of the most consistent stretches of his career — but also led to exhaustion. That was one reason he missed the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the PGA Tour’s season opener in Hawaii.

Jon Rahm shot 65 on Thursday at Bay Hill — and 76 on Friday.

‘It’s f—– hard’: Jon Rahm comes back to Earth at brutal Bay Hill

How’s he feeling now?

“I think things should quiet down,” he said optimistically. He cited the changes as an attempt to balance top competition with fairness and accessibility. He also acknowledged his role in the process.

“There’s been a ton of phone calls, a ton of meetings, but now that it’s been decided and announced, hopefully it will quiet down on that front a bit for me,” he said.

That still seems like wishful thinking. He only made it one question further before he was asked how the changes would affect the DP World Tour. While the changes have clear benefits for the top players on the PGA Tour, that upside is less obvious for their “strategic alliance” partners across the pond. McIlroy didn’t disagree with that assessment but leaned instead on the argument that a stronger ecosystem is better for every player in it.

“Look, I think everyone knows [the PGA Tour] is the place that you want to play golf, right? It is. People complain about these 10 cards going to the European Tour players that get on this tour, but if I’m a European Tour player, like, that’s brilliant,” he said.

Beginning this year, the top 10 DP World Tour players will earn PGA Tour cards. Critics argue that relegates the former European Tour to a secondary feeder circuit. McIlroy says that’s already the reality of the situation, and access to the top tour in the world is a significant benefit.

“Instead of trying to think about what’s good for the [DP World Tour], think about what’s good for the players that are on that tour. I think that’s where people need to sort of reframe their mind a little bit.”

He seemed to catch himself before further slighting the DP circuit; McIlroy came of age on the European Tour and keeps membership there, too.

“So to have the opportunity to be in the top 10 in Europe and then get over where all the opportunity is, which is here — I’m not saying there’s no opportunity over there, there is. But the one thing I would like to see going forward with this designated events schedule is trying to get some of those tournaments in the mix overseas.”

If you were wondering where all of this was going, well, so was I. But now we’ve arrived at an interesting proposal. Even if it’s just a thought experiment, well, why not? Let’s go thinking. What events would McIlroy have in mind for these overseas designated events? His Irish Open?

“Irish Open. Spanish Open,” he said. “Scottish Open is obviously a co-sanctioned event now [between the DP World and PGA Tours], which is a big step forward. Wentworth [host of the BMW PGA Championship]. There’s a few obvious ones that stick out that you could try to incorporate into more of a World Tour schedule, more so than it just being purely DP World, purely PGA Tour — and trying to sort of combine the two a little bit.”

It’s worth noting that McIlroy is hardly the first one to suggest a “World Tour” extending beyond the boundaries of North America. Greg Norman’s vision for a worldwide tour led to legal disputes and tour drama in the 1990s and preceded the World Golf Championships, which tried to fill a similar void. While the WGCs appear to be on their last legs, the Tour has since established events in foreign countries like Japan, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Dominican Republic and Minnesota ( ba dum tss ) as well as a co-sanctioned event in Scotland. Globalism seems to be a focus on the other side of the fence, too. While the majority of LIV’s events are in North America, they’ve made going abroad a priority — including to Norman’s home country of Australia.

It’s possible that McIlroy was just shooting from the hip. But his comments speak to both the challenges and the opportunities that come with a limited number of big-money designated events.

The challenge is that there are a finite number of rotating events and a large number of places that want to host them. Of the 16 designated events on the schedule, 12 seem locked in — the majors (4), the Players (5), the playoffs (8), the Sentry (9) and the invitationals at Riviera, Bay Hill and Memorial (12). That only leaves four remaining events. There will be plenty of pressure to rotate those among favorite Tour stops and favored Tour sponsors. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, for example, is expected to get a designated event next year. Every big-time event whose sponsor can afford it will want a seat at the big kids’ table. Four events per year can only make four venues happy. That’s the challenge. Some international events provide some additional challenges, too: TV windows are less traditional, sponsor money is less abundant, tournament infrastructure may not exist. There’s also an additional LIV-related complication: as long as LIV golfers have access to DP World Tour events, as they do now, the PGA Tour is unlikely to give them avenues to play co-sanctioned tournaments. So for now, there are plenty of reasons to think McIlroy’s dream won’t happen.

jay monahan greg norman

Critics say new PGA Tour events copy LIV. Are they right?

But behind those challenges lurks opportunity. Other than Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy is the golfer most likely to get something like this done. And because the designated events are scheduled to come in pairs, maybe there’s opportunity there. Perhaps the Scottish Open could receive designated status the week before the Open Championship. Another year a designated Irish Open could be the week after the Open. Is there a way to get the Spanish Open back-to-back with Wentworth? Those would be nods to the strategic alliance with the DP World Tour, and it’s no coincidence that McIlroy mentioned the national opens of the world’s best non-Americans — his Irish Open and Jon Rahm’s Spanish.

There are other exciting options, too, if you dream hard enough. In 2025 perhaps the RBC Canadian Open could get designated status the week before the U.S. Open takes place a couple hundred miles south at Oakmont (and perhaps even sooner than that…). Maybe the Australian Open could follow the Sentry Tournament of Champions another year. (Hawaii’s already most of the way to Australia, right?!) There are ways to serve up major championship-caliber fields and elevate existing tournaments on intriguing courses with storied histories.

If anyone can get it done, it’s McIlroy. Back to the conference room, Rory!

But first, some tournament golf on the weekend.

2024 Cognizant Classic scores, leaderboard: Rory McIlroy, Cameron Young just off pace after Round 1

Rory mcilroy shot a nice 67 on thursday and trails two long shots after round 1.

The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches - Round One

PGA National played easy for how PGA National normally plays on Thursday in Round 1 of the Cognizant Classic. Some of that is due to the fact that the par-4 10th hole has been changed to a par 5, but also because the fairways at this difficult track have been widened.

And even though scoring was lower than most are accustomed to, players still have to beat everybody in the field they're teeing it up against. The only players who did that over 18 holes were Chad Ramey and S.H. Kim, both of whom shot 64s and are out in front of a big pack at 6 under after the first round.

Let's take a closer look at their rounds, who's chasing and what to expect over the next few days of the Cognizant Classic.

The leaders

T1. Chad Ramey, S.H. Kim (-7)

Ramey held the outright lead for most of the day until Kim tied him with a birdie at his last hole of the day, the par-5 18th. Ramey doesn't have a top-10 anywhere in the world since he won the Corales Puntacana Championship in 2022. Throw in 25 missed cuts since that victory, and his Round 1 lead is a bit of a shocker. However, it would kind of fit nicely with what's happened on the PGA Tour so far this year. Almost every winner has been triple-digit odds when the week started. Ramey's number going into this week? Right at 300-1.

Other contenders

T3. Andrew Novak, Ryan Moore, Austin Eckroat, Cameron Young, Chesson Hadley (-6)

T8. C.T. Pan, Billy Horschel, Sam Ryder, Bud Cauley, Chandler Phillips, Erik van Rooyen, Kevin Yu (-5)

Young is the fascinating name in this group. He made 10 threes on Thursday in the first round and didn't even drive it that well. He's had a weird year. Mediocre showings at The Sentry and Pebble, a third place in Dubai and then top-20 at Phoenix and Riviera. He's my not-that-longshot pick to win the Masters, and it would be nice if he found some form right now. Still, be wary of the over three strokes gained with the putter on Thursday. That could go the other way on Friday.

What Rory McIlroy is doing right now must be frustrating. He hit 12 of 14 fairways and led everyone in strokes gained off the tee. He's hitting the driver unbelievably (even for him) but struggling on approach play. He lost a stroke to the field Thursday in approach play, didn't putt particularly well and still shot a 4-under 67, which puts him within three of the lead and leaves him as the favorite.

"Some good, some not so good," he said of his round. "Really good off the tee. That's been a really good thing. I led strokes gained off the tee at Riviera a couple weeks ago, drove it really well again today.

"But a little loose with the irons. Didn't really hole much going out, but I holed a couple on the back nine. Overall, it's a solid start. 67 around here is always a decent score. It was so benign today. You're not going to get this course much easier. Probably could have been a couple of shots better, but overall still a decent start."

If he cleans up his iron play at all, he's going to be a big problem.

Jake Knapp, future star?

Knapp followed his victory in Mexico last week with a 3-under 68 on Thursday while playing with the No. 2-ranked McIlroy. Rory got him in driving distance (two holes) by 8 yards (327 yards to 319 yards) but said he enjoyed the 29-year-old's game.

"He could definitely be a star," said McIlroy. "It looks like he's got the full package. He's obviously got the speed. He can control that speed pretty well. He hit some beautiful shots out there today. Looks like his short game is pretty good. He's got charisma and like we had a good chat out there for a lot of the round. He's in good shape, and he -- if he keeps playing the way he is, he's the full package. He could be a superstar out here for sure."

2024 Cognizant Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via SportsLine consensus

  • Rory McIlroy: 13/2
  • Cameron Young: 15/2
  • S.H. Kim: 16-1
  • Beyong Hun An: 20-1
  • Chesson Hadley: 22-1
  • Andrew Novak: 22-1
  • Min Woo Lee: 22-1

This is an interesting board. I like McIlroy but probably not at that number. To be honest, I don't love anyone here. I'd rather go further down the board and look at Daniel Berger, who is 45-1 after shooting 68 and finishing nearly last in putting. He has a pair of top-fives in his last two starts -- granted, 2020 and 2022 before his most recent injury -- and at 45-1, he's a bit of a steal.

College sports | update: the body of kissimmee teen madeline soto has been found, college sports, subscriber only, college sports | former api champions rory mcilroy, scottie scheffler headline 2024 field.

The 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational will feature a stellar yet smaller field vying for one of golf’s largest purses on one of the PGA Tour’s most demanding layouts.

Many of the ingredients are in place for another for riveting week at Orlando’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, beginning with Thursday’s first round.

But as with everything these days in men’s professional golf, something will be missing, too.

The API is expected to host 18 of the top-20 players in the Official World Golf rankings, including world No. 1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and No. 2 Rory McIlroy , the tournament’s 2018 winner .

Absent and gone to LIV Golf are world No. 3 and reigning Master champion Jon Rahm as well as 2020 API winner Tyrrell Hatton , who sits No. 17 worldwide. Rahm and Hatton joined the rival tour in January, further undercutting the top end of the men’s game and even the Tour’s top events.

Bryson DeChambeau, the 2021 winner at Bay Hill, also is a LIV member.

Current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler holds up the championship trophy after winning the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational golf tournament in Orlando. (AP Photo/John Raoux)

Yet Kurt Kitayama returns with the goal to become the API’s first repeat winner since Daytona Beach native Matt Every in 2014-15 after his stunning 2023 performance marked his Kitayama’s PGA Tour victory.

The journeyman pro earned $3.6 million after the Tour raised the purse from $12 million to $20 million and elevated the 2023 API to one of 13 signature events in response to the  threat from Saudi-back LIV.

This year, the Tour is rewarding the game’s best golfers even more handsomely. There now will be eight signature events with fields reduced to 70-80 players, down from 120 in the API’s case.

The limited-field events do not include the four major championships, the Players Championship March 14-17 in Ponte Vedra Beach or FedEx Cup Playoffs events.

Among the eight, Palmer’s popular and longstanding event will be among just three with a 36-hole cut alongside Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial and Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

The cut will be set at the low 50 and ties, or anyone within 10 shots of the lead. Winners of those player-hosted invitationals will receive $4 million — the payoff for LIV tournament winners.

The 2024 API field will include top 50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings but will not be final until Sunday night based on the Tour’s new eligibility paths allowing trending players to earn signature event starts.

Ten golfers can earn a spot based on the current FedExCup standings through this week’s Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach County. The next five players will get in based on earning the most points at the Feb. 22-25 the Mexico Open at Vidanta and the Cognizant Classic.

But the star often becomes Bay Hill’s brutish setup. The course has been among the Tour’s 10 toughest since 2019, ranking No. 1 in 2020 when Hatton posted a 4-under winning score and No. 4 behind three major championship venues when Scheffler won in 2022.

Tickets are still available, beginning at $35 for each practice round on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Thursday’s first round costs $75 while tickets are $85 each day for Friday through Sunday action. A 10% savings is available for those using a Mastercard, now in its 20th year as tournament sponsor.

Tickets to the White Claw fan deck are $120 Thursday and $140 each of the other three days.

Rory McIlroy proposes new-look world golf tour with 22-event schedule with F1 inspiration

R ory McIlroy has shared his 'dream scenario' following the proposed merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf as he suggests a new global golf tour inspired by Formula One.

The Irishman, who has previously been among the high-profile names to speak out against players who have joined LIV Golf , now sees a chance for a new-look global circuit. Last year, the civil war within golf appeared to be heading towards a ceasefire after the rival tours agreed to a potential merger.

But making a final deal between the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour failed to materialize in the second half of 2023. All parties had vowed to get an agreement signed and sealed by December 31, but this eventually did not come to pass as an extension to negotiations was sought.

Big-name golfers like Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Jon Rahm have been tempted by big money to play golf in the Gulf State for the last two years. This has changed the complexion of the game considerably but McIlroy thinks these changing times now present an opportunity to go back to the drawing board.

Chatting with Golf Digest in Dubai, the world No. 2 shared his dream for the future of golf. He said: "Going forward, if everything is on the table, venues have to be a big part of the consideration. My dream scenario is a world tour, with the proviso that corporate America has to remain a big part of it all. Saudi Arabia, too. That's just basic economics."

He also mentioned the untapped commercial opportunities that have become apparent following the emergence of LIV Golf. He said: "But there is an untapped commercial opportunity out there. Investors always want to make a return on their money.

"Revenues at the PGA Tour right now are about $2.3 billion. So how do we get that number up to four or six? To me, it is by looking outward. They need to think internationally and spread their wings a bit. I've been banging that drum for a while."

The four-time major champion then outlined a detailed proposal for what a new world tour could eventually look like, suggesting a schedule that would take place in various locations across the globe. "Whether they are rotated on the new global circuit, or we go with the same ones every year, I'm OK with either," he added.

He even hinted that the proposed world tour should work similarly to Formula One and outlined a potential plan for a 22-event schedule for the 'top 70-100' players in the world. He continued: "The Australian Open, for example, should almost be the fifth major.

"The market down there is huge with potential. They love golf. They love sport. They have been starved of top-level golf. And the courses are so good. The South African Open is another I'd have in the mix. Then you have places like Singapore and Hong Kong and Japan. What a market Japan represents. That would be another opportunity."

McIlroy also said: "We could end up with something that resembles Formula One, but with a little more of an American presence. Throw in the four majors and you have a brilliant schedule for the top 70-100 guys, whatever the number is. We'd have, say a 22-event schedule. That would look pretty good to me."
