The Best Philadelphia Tours
J. Smith | Courtesy of Visit Philadelphia
The "Rocky" statue is one of the sights you'll see along the Yo, Philly! Rocky Film Tour.
There are so many things to do in Philadelphia that the historic landmarks alone – Independence Hall , the Liberty Bell , the National Constitution Center , the Betsy Ross House – could fill an entire trip. To make the most of your time, consider a guided Philadelphia tour that covers a variety of attractions and experiences, from visiting lesser-known "Rocky" filming locations with a Sylvester Stallone look-alike to tasting your way through the city's best food markets with an expert.
Based on travel expert opinions and recent views from sites like Tripadvisor and Google, these are the best tours in Philadelphia.
The Yo, Philly! Rocky Film Tour
Price: From $350 Duration: 3 hours
Mike Kunda, a lifelong fan of "Rocky" and the winner of a national "Rocky" look-alike contest, leads private tours to "Rocky" filming locations throughout Philadelphia. You'll visit Rocky's apartment from the first movie, the Front Street Gym featured in "Creed," the infamous site of the Tommy Gunn fight in "Rocky V," the Rocky Steps and Statue and more. Kunda will share stories told to him by actor Sylvester Stallone from his time on set during the filming of "Rocky Balboa," "Creed" and "Creed II," and there will be plenty of "Rocky" trivia along the way. Participants praise Kunda's depth and breadth of knowledge and love his enthusiasm.
The tour is limited to private groups of up to seven people for a flat rate of $350. Tours must be booked in advance on the official website.

Big Bus Philadelphia – 1-Day Tour
Price: Adults from $36; kids from $17 Duration: 90 minutes or more
If you're looking for a traditional hop-on, hop-off bus tour in Philly, climb aboard the Big Bus Philadelphia for an overview of the city. If any one of the landmarks along the route pique your interest, hop off to explore and hop back on when you're ready; buses frequent stops every 25 to 45 minutes and there's no limit to how many times you can board the bus over the course of a day. If you decide to stay on the bus, the tour lasts about 90 minutes. Stops along the blue route – Big Bus' only line – include the Betsy Ross House, LOVE Park and the Barnes Foundation . Experienced English-speaking guides offer a comprehensive commentary along the route. While this is the highest-rated Philadelphia bus tour, reviews are mixed. Some travelers note the bus is best for transportation only and not for learning about the history of the city, while others say they were pleased with their guide and the overall experience.
Buses run daily from approximately 9:30 a.m. to around 5 or 6 p.m.; hours may vary in the winter months. Tickets start at $36 for adults and $17 for kids ages 4 to 12. Two- and three-day bus tour tickets are also available.

Despite the spooky content, travelers say the guides are great storytellers and make plenty of jokes. The tour is not appropriate for young children, however.

10 Best Tours in Philadelphia
By Nancy DePalma
Whether it’s munching in Manayunk, toasting on the Tippler’s Tour, or running Rocky-style through the streets of South Philly, you’ll see a different side of the city with tours. Looking for some culture? No problem: Art aficionados from all over the world travel to get close to some of the 4,000 murals on a Mural Arts Philadelphia walking tour; and an architecture tour with the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia will have you exploring the neighborhood of Northern Liberties in no time. From beers to bikes, there’s more than one way to soak up all that Philadelphia has to offer—take it all in with these ten tours, the best in the city.
Philly Bike Tour Co.: Fairmount Park Historical Tour Arrow
Philly Bike Tours meet at the company's HQ, where you’ll be fitted with a helmet and a bike before setting off on two wheels through scenic Fairmount Park. This is a 14-mile bike ride with some hills; your fellow tourees will be seasoned riders and fitness enthusiasts. Jonas, who founded the tour company, will be your fearless leader—he's particularly passionate about what he does, and he's eager to share his knowledge. Even better? Tours are limited to 12 riders.
Chew Philly Food Tours: Authentic Philly Food Tour in Manayunk Arrow
Chew Philly Food Tours runs some of the city's most popular tours, and its two-and-a-half-hour walking tour of Manayunk, one of Philadelphia’s most beloved neighborhoods, is particularly notable. Groups top out at 18, and there's one guide who is well-versed in Manayunk’s history and food scene. These tours, which run from May through November rain or shine, tend to draw local dining obsessives as well as international visitors. You'll taste eight things, and the bites are far from skimpy—so come hungry.
Philly Brew Tours: Original Brew Tour Arrow
The Philly Original Brew Tour explores gives tourees behind-the-scenes access to some of the region’s most popular beer producers. You'll travel by van to a handful of craft breweries, stopping to taste and enjoy a beer-pairing with lunch. Guides are beer-loving bros with deep knowledge to boot, and tours last about five hours, so be sure to clear your afternoon. Rather unsurprisingly, this is a popular tour that often sells out—so book well in advance.
City Running Tours: South Philly/Italian Market Run Arrow
City Running Tours' South Philly/Italian Market run takes joggers on the sidewalks of this eclectic and bustling neighborhood, stopping at South Street, as well as the Italian Market, immortalized as one of Rocky’s training sites. Although the guide ensures that nobody will be left behind, this isn’t a tour for someone who huffs and puffs when carrying in the groceries. Case in point? You'll cover about six miles in 90 minutes.

Mural Arts Philadelphia Arrow
Philadelphia is known for its world-class museums , but few realize that it's also home to one of the world’s great outdoor art galleries, courtesy of its 4,000 (and counting) murals. Mural Arts Philadelphia, the brains behind these public art displays, runs walking tours of the seemingly endless string of outdoor art—but the best way to see it all is, undoubtedly, by foot. Groups of 15-20 meet at PAFA, the oldest art institution in the U.S., before meandering through Center City, and taking in a dozen or so murals. Whether it’s the tile lining the walls of the subway, or the mural brightening a city parking lot, it's not just something we look at; it’s something we live with every day. Guides are professional and passionate; they enjoy showing off the murals, and sharing insight into how they’re created, as well as stories about the program’s outreach to area homeless, incarcerated, and schoolchildren.
Preservation Alliance Architecture Walking Tours: Northern Liberties Arrow
The Preservation Alliance's Architecture Walking Tours help visitors and locals alike dig deeper into a neighborhood by exploring its buildings. Tours last anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours; although you can buy tickets in advance online, you can also join at the spur of the moment if you're paying by cash or check. The tour schedule isn’t consistent, so be sure to check the website. Private tours are also available.
Terror Behind the Walls: Eastern State Penitentiary Arrow
Terror Behind the Walls runs from late September through the first week of November (Wednesday through Sunday nights) inside the historic Eastern State Penitentiary, an abandoned ten-acre prison that once housed Al Capone. Its semi-ruinous state is creepy enough during the day, but come nightfall, it’s transformed into a nightmarish horror movie come to life, with six scripted attractions ranging from prison break scenarios to evil-minded doctors. Tickets sell out and are sold in half-hour windows; once you're in, the experience takes 45 minutes.
Tippler's Tour Arrow
Tippler’s Tour is a mashup between a history lesson and a pub crawl, complete with Colonial reenactors and Ben Franklin himself. Tours meet at Independence Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.; from there, you'll embark on a 2.5-hour walking tour, hitting three modern bars and the historic City Tavern. Since the tours don’t run every day, advance planning is suggested.
Taste of Philly: Reading Terminal Market Tour Arrow
Taste of Philly Food Tour delves into the past and present of Reading Terminal Market, an indoor market brimming with food vendors, butchers, bakers, cheesemongers, and more. The 125-year-old institution, a Philadelphia landmark, is a must-visit, but it can be dizzying; this 75-minute tour makes sense of the behemoth. Tours run Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., and reservations are required.
Laurel Hill Cemetery Tours Arrow
Laurel Hill Cemetery offers a number of self-guided tours by foot or car. The office provides maps, but the best way to explore this 78-acre National Historic Landmark—the nation’s second oldest cemetery—is by downloading the app and selecting a tour from its list. Themes include art and architecture; pop culture and contemporary stories; and lore and legend. All tours last anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. The cemetery is open seven days a week from morning until late afternoon.

The most noteworthy is Independence Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were signed.
Philadelphia's most famous founding father is Benjamin Franklin, a man of many great distinctions. Although he had little formal education, he became an author, publisher, scientist, inventor, diplomat, and statesman. As an entrepreneur, he began a successful printing business and published his annual “Poor Richard’s Almanack”. The same entrepreneurial spirit continues in the city today.
