Bible Lesson: Mary and Joseph Travel to Bethlehem

In this creative Bible lesson, kids learn about Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem for Jesus to be born.

Scripture: Luke 2:1-5

You’ll need:

• copies of the “Mary and Joseph Travel to Bethlehem” activity page (1 per child)
• sugar cubes (1 per child)

Travel to Bethlehem

Write children’s names on their pages. Set out the sugar cubes, glue, and crayons. Cut the sandpaper into strips that will fit on the illustration of the road.

Instruct children to color Mary, Joseph, and the donkey as you talk. Tell the story of how Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem (found in Luke 2 ). Explain that God had a special plan for Jesus—Mary’s baby. God had a plan for Jesus to be born in Bethlehem. The only problem was that Jesus’ family lived very far away from Bethlehem!

Show children the donkey in the picture, and tell children how God used the donkey to help Mary and Joseph get to Bethlehem. The donkey helped carry Jesus’ family from their hometown to Bethlehem. Encourage children to glue a sugar cube in Joseph’s hand near the donkey’s mouth to thank the donkey for being part of God’s special plan.

Have children glue the sandpaper on the road as a reminder that God planned a path for Mary, Joseph, and the donkey to take. Remind kids that they can know that God has a special plan for each one of them. Encourage kids to show the “Mary and Joseph Travel to Bethlehem” activity page to their families as a reminder that God has special plans for everyone.

• What kinds of plans do you think God has for you?

Lk. 2:1-5         Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem in Judaea , where Joseph’s family live (see 1 on Map 4 ). The journey takes four or five days as Nazareth is 65 miles / 105 km north of Jerusalem  (in a straight line), while Bethlehem is a hilltop town situated on a ridge near the edge of the Judaean desert , 5 miles / 8km south of Jerusalem .

                The Roman Census

Luke, writing his gospel in 60-62AD for a Roman audience (see Luke 1:3), gives the census ordered by Augustus Caesar (who was emperor from 27BC to 14AD) as the reason why Mary and Joseph travelled from Nazareth to Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus (see Luke 2:1-3 and 1 on Map 4 ). He explains that, as men had to register at their home town (so they could be taxed by the Romans), Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem because Joseph was a descendent of King David and Joseph’s family came from Bethlehem (see Matthew 1:1 & 1 Samuel 16:1&13). Luke states that the census took place when Quirinius was the Roman governor of Syria .

The Jewish historian Josephus confirms that a general taxation was indeed overseen by Cyrenius (Quirinius).  He notes, however, that Cyrenius was appointed as Governor of the province of Syria when the Romans deposed Archelaus (Herod the Great’s son) as ruler of Judaea in 6AD. Judaea was then taken under direct Roman rule and incorporated into the Roman province of Syria . This resulted in a revolt led by Judas of Gamala (‘Judas the Galilean’), a Jewish zealot (see Acts 5:37).

As Jesus was born in 6 or 5BC, this Roman census occurred eleven or twelve years after his birth. As Jesus was born while Herod the Great was King of Judaea , no Roman governor of Syria would have had the jurisdiction to organise a census and general taxation in Judaea at the time of Jesus’s birth.

It appears, therefore, that Luke was mistaken when giving this Roman census as the cause of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem . Whatever the reason, Joseph made the decision to return to his family home in Bethlehem in time for his newly betrothed wife to give birth amongst his close relatives.

Map - Luke 02 - The Nativity routes

Description of possible route(s) taken by Joseph & Mary. Over 2000 years ago, Joseph & Mary made the journey from Nazareth in Galilee (northern Israel) to Bethlehem, their ancestral “home town”, a few miles south of Jerusalem (West of the Dead Sea). Because of the threat of bandits on the roads, it is quite likely the couple travelled with a caravan of other travellers, for mutual support & safety. There could have been other people returning to Bethlehem (& other central & southern villages, towns, cities) for the census.

We don’t know the exact route Joseph & Mary took, since that is not recorded in the Gospel accounts. However, there are two probably ones: Route 01) The Trade Route – marked with a purple dashed line on my map (see below). Route 02) The Jordan River Valley Route – marked with a red dashed line on my map (see below).

Route 01 is shorter (approximately 80 miles (129 km), but the walk would have been more demanding, since it traverses hills in Samaria (in central Israel). There is also the “social landscape” to take into account – in that the Jews hated the Samaritans, & the other route (what I’ve called the Jordan River Valley Route) allowed Jews to circumvent Samaria altogether. The Trade Route would also have exposed the travellers to more arid conditions, due to the elevation of their surroundings.

Route 02 is the flatter way, running as it does through the Jezreel valley into the Jordan River Valley, which would have been easier going for the pregnant Mary. This route is longer, being approximately 90 miles (145 km) in length, but the climate in the valleys would have been more comfortable than the arid hills of Samaria. Joseph, Mary & any others who travelled with them would still have been obliged to make the steep 16 mile (26 km) climb up the road from the Jordan valley near Jericho to the heights on which Jerusalem rests. In Jesus’ time, this section of the road was called “the Way of Blood”, because of the danger from robbers. Incidentally, this section of road is where Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan is set. It ascends 3,500 feet over 16 miles, which makes for quite a steep gradient.

Travelling at about 10 miles per day, it would have taken Joseph & Mary about 8-10 days to reach their destination. Regardless of the route, the journey would have been quite arduous & was probably a scary prospect for the young, pregnant mother.

A note about the Jericho-Jerusalem road. The road from Jericho to Jerusalem is mentioned in the account of King David’s flight from Jerusalem at the approach of his son Absalom, who sought to usurp him (see 2 Samuel 15:13-16:14.) The road is mentioned more vaguely in the following places:

01) 2 Kings 25:4 – King Zedekiah’s thwarted attempt to escape the Babylonians. 02) Mark 10:46-11:1 – The account of Jesus healing the blind beggar Bartimaeus. 03) The road is also the setting for the Good Samaritan parable which Jesus told (see Luke 10:29-37)

The Adventures of Mary and Joseph – The Road Movie  tells the Christmas story in nine entertaining and informative episodes.

The videos, produced as a collaboration between Jerusalem Productions and BRF, are ideal material for use in the classroom to help children explore the impact and significance of the nativity for Christians.

The following lesson outline offers you a way to work through the story in the video with your class group. There are a variety of possible activities. There are also links to other related videos and to further web resources.

View the episode in advance .

Print off a copy of the Bible story as well as the discussion starters and activity suggestions to be used with small groups.

Development

• First Impressions – The journey to Bethlehem

Play this episode to the class. It tells the story of the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem from Nazareth. The demands of the Roman census meant that each head of the household had to return to his place of birth. Joseph was from Bethlehem.

Ask the class:

• What did you like best about this episode?
• What made you smile?
• What did you find surprising?
• What didn’t seem to make sense?
• What would you say was happening in this episode?
• What must it have been like for Mary who was nine months pregnant by now?
• What do you think was on Joseph’s mind during the long, slow journey?
• Which part of this story made the biggest impression on you?
• Group work t when things are tough

Hand out the following discussion starters to small groups.

• What is the hardest thing you have had to cope with?
• How do you react when everything seems to be against you?
• What is the best way that you have found to stay calm in a crisis?
• Talk about a time when you have been stuck for ages in traffic. How did you cope?
• Which is worse, worrying about yourself or worrying about a friend?
• How long can you cope when things are tough before you give up?

Allow ten minutes for this and then ask one child per group to report back on what they talked about and what ideas they came up with.

Read the Bible story for episode 3. You will find this below in the Contemporary English Version (CEV). There is also an easy-to-read retelling of this story in The Barnabas Children’s Bible, story 246.

The Birth of Jesus

About that time Emperor Augustus gave orders for the names of all the people to be listed in record books. These first records were made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to go to their own hometown to be listed.

Talk about the Bible story:

• What is in the Bible story that is not in the video? What is in the video that is not in the Bible story? Does the video help you understand the Bible story better? Which parts of the Bible story do you find puzzling?
• I wonder what it felt like to live under the Roman occupation? I wonder what it felt like for Joseph to have to take Mary on such a long journey in her condition? I wonder how helpless they felt in the face of the power of the Roman Empire and its laws, which had to be obeyed?
• A Carousel of Group Activities
• Paul says something intriguing about the Christmas story in one of his letters. It’s really his only direct reference to Christmas. Read Galatians 4:4.

He says that Jesus came ‘when the time was right’.

List some of the aspects of the particular time and place when Jesus was born that you know of. Why might that make this the right time for God to send Jesus?

• Find out about travel in Roman times, using reference books from the library or the web. How would a poor couple like Joseph and Mary probably have travelled?
• Find a map of modern Israel/Palestine. What might be the route from Nazareth to Bethlehem? What modern cities and towns are en route? Find out about this journey: how far is it? Are there any problems with the route? How long would it take to walk it, averaging about three miles an hour (remember Mary was pregnant) and travelling for about seven hours a day?
• What sorts of dangers might they encounter on the way? Write an illustrated, imaginative diary of the journey. You can choose to write it either from Joseph’s or from Mary’s point of view. In the video, it is clearly very hot weather. Find out from the web what the climate is like in that part of the world. It was in fact probably summer, not winter (when we traditionally celebrate Jesus’ birth) as the Roman census would have been scheduled for the best time of year for travelling.
• Do a survey of your class, finding who would have to travel where, if the rule was that every family had to return to the father’s birthplace to complete an official census. What travel problems might we all face if this really did happen for us?
• Classroom Drama Ideas

Put God in the hot seat – why did God choose the little village of Bethlehem and not some great city or some grand palace for his Son? (Hint: Look up Micah 5:2-5 for one reason.)

In pairs act out the dialogue between Mary and Joseph as they are in the queue of traffic. You could try introducing other characters with their opinions, including the man from the car in front, who has got out and is wandering up and down the line; a passing cyclist; a passing pedestrian.

• Final reflection questions looking back on the session
• How might your life have been different if you had been born elsewhere? Perhaps in another country or at another time in history?
• Why do you think it might be important that the Christian story begins in a stable and not a stately home?
• The majority of the world’s population lives in crowded, urban areas and often in poor housing. Does this help make sense of the Christmas story or does it make it even more irrelevant?
• There is much debate as to exactly where Jesus might have been born: in a cave outside Bethlehem; in the lower part of a peasant Bethlehem home; or at the back of a Bethlehem inn with the animals. Do you think it matters when and how Jesus was born?

Let's All Go To Bethlehem!

To enter into the experience of the shepherds and demonstrate that fears can be overcome.

Preparation and materials

• Familiarize yourself with the story and actions in the ‘Assembly’, Step 3, so that you can focus on making it expressive and compelling.
• Read the story of the shepherds in Luke 2.8–15. An accessible version of this can be read in the ‘Assembly’, Step 2, but is optional.
• A lit candle can be used as a focus during the ‘Time for reflection’ section of the assembly, if wished.
• Ask the children, ‘Have you ever been afraid of the dark?’ Acknowledge that many people feel uncomfortable and frightened in darkness. At night it’s difficult to see. Obstacles cause us to stumble and fall. Noises are startling. Reflect that, away from city streetlights and homes, the open countryside can seem very dark and frightening. 
• Refer to the story of the first Christmas. Shepherds stayed on the hills throughout the night, watching and guarding their flocks. Their only light was perhaps the glow of a fire.  They were terrified when they saw an angel, but, after seeing Jesus, they no longer felt afraid. Read the passage from Luke 2.8–15 at this point, if you wish.
• Invite the children to imagine that they are with the shepherds on their journey to Bethlehem. Encourage them to quickly echo your words and actions, which will work best if delivered with appropriate pace and a sense of fun. Let’s all go to Bethlehem Let’s all go to Bethlehem. (Beckon.) We’ve seen an angel! (Raised arms.) And heard about a baby, (arms as if cradling a baby) a very special baby. (Nod knowingly.) Leave the sheep behind. Baa! It’s so dark! (Look around nervously.) So very cold! (Shiver.) Are you frightened? (Nod head for ‘Yes’.) All together then. (Motion to others.) Quickly down the hill. Follow me! (Stride on the spot.) Across the stream. Splish, splash. (Make small leaps.) Through the prickly bushes. Ow! Ouch! Ow! (Flinch in pain.) Look at that brilliant star. Wow! (Point upwards.) Stop! There’s a stable. (Stand still.) Push open the door. (Push and peer around edge of door.) Tiptoe in quietly. (Tiptoe.) Peep into the manger. (Lean over and look downwards.)  He’s asleep! (Index finger on lips.) Don’t wake the baby. (Whispered.) Tiptoe out softly. (Tiptoe.) Close the door gently. (Pull door to.) A baby has been born! Let’s all jump for joy! (Jump for joy!) It’s just as the angels promised! Let’s all shout hurray! (Shout ‘Hurray!’) His name is Jesus! Let’s tell the others! (Beckon.) All together then. (Motion to others.) Quickly up the hill. Follow me. (Stride on the spot.) Through the prickly bushes. Ow! Ouch! Ow! (Flinch in pain.) Across the stream. Splish, splash. (Make small leaps.) Back to the sheep. Baa! It’s so dark. (Look around.) So very cold. (Shiver.)    Are you frightened? (Shake head for ‘No’.) No! Not at all. (Smile.) We’ve seen the special baby! (Arms as if cradling a baby.)
• Conclude by saying that Christians believe the Christmas story tells how faith in God can help to overcome fear. The shepherds returned to their flocks with joy and confidence.

Time for reflection

Spend some moments thinking of anyone who may be afraid tonight. If you are afraid, remember that there are others who understand how you feel. The following affirmation of faith may also be repeated a phrase at a time. Prayer Jesus is born! (Light the candle, if using.) Light in the darkness.  Peace be with you!
