This boutique lodge is tucked away in a secluded valley in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy. It’s the perfect starting point for (private) game drives and guided nature walks led by the lodge’s Masai guides and trackers.

It doesn’t get much more intimate and secluded than this. Saruni Mara Safari Lodge consists of five charming thatched cottages, one private villa and a family villa, all perched against a forested hillside. The view from each of the cottages and villas is stunning. The positioning of the lodge gives guests just the right vantage point for the most breathtaking sunsets. The lodge is one of only a few safari lodges in the Mara North Conservancy , just north of the Masai Mara National Reserve. It’s the smallest permanent lodge in the Masai Mara ecosystem and it was designed to blend in with its surroundings. Just south of the lodge lie endless fields of gold and a lush green forest lies to the north. Saruni Mara is ideally situated for game drives, nature walks and for witnessing the epic annual migration of wildebeest and zebra through the region.

Each of Saruni Mara’s cottages has been beautifully styled according to its own specific theme. In general, each cottage is furnished with beautifully polished wooden floors, colonial antiques, African art and Persian carpets. Even in the heart of the wild there are plenty of creature comforts to enjoy such as 220-volt electricity, large Italian design bathrooms with hot and cold running water and a canvas front that can be opened allowing you to shower with a magnificent view if you want to. Here’s an overview of the cottages and villas available to you:

• The Observatory: this cottage is inspired by the endless starry skies above the Masai Mara. It’s outfitted with a vintage brass telescope, a moon map and a variety of materials with a celestial theme. It also has a wonderfully large front deck perfect for stargazing.
• The Photographer’s Studio: this cottage is inspired by photography and its styling pays tribute to the beautiful snapshots that have been taken in the Masai Mara. An old box browning camera, an antique photographic equipment catalogue and the many fascinating prints on the walls all add to the ambiance of this classic cottage. And the view from the front deck… picture perfect!
• The Artist’s Studio: this cottage will inspire creative guests to paint their next masterpiece. The cottage is equipped with an easel, paint and a desk filled with drawing materials. A stylishly decorated en-suite bedroom leads out to a large front deck overlooking the secluded valley below. Just beyond the valley the endless plains of the Mara await.
• The Literary Room: this cottage is inspired by the dreamers, the great writers and the poets. It’s not hard to imagine the cottage being the secluded getaway of a literary great. With its vintage typewriter, comfortable leather reading chairs and writing desk, the scene is set for writing your own epic safari adventure. Prefer reading over writing? Simply grab a chair on your front deck and enjoy.
• The Love Shack: this cottage is also known as Saruni Mara’s honeymoon suite. The neutral colours, elegant stylings and stunning view of the valley are perfect for a romantic getaway. The cottage’s spacious bedroom opens up onto a wonderfully large front deck, just right for a private dinner for two.
• Private Villa: Saruni Mara’s private villa is named ‘Nyati House’. It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room, a lounge, a kitchen and a large deck. The villa is situated in a private valley at a five-minute driving distance away from the rest of the lodge. It’s the ideal place for groups or families who want to get away from it all. The private villa comes with a private safari vehicle and guide. All meals are served in the comfort of the villa’s own dining room. The villa is stylishly decorated and its wooden features give it a very natural look and feel. The villa’s two spacious bedrooms overlook the Masai Mara plains. The villa offers you your own private safari paradise.
• The Natural History Suite / Family Villa: the lodge’s family villa is also known as ‘the Natural History Suite’. This new villa has two en-suite bedrooms, a spacious lounge with dining area and a very cosy fireplace. The spacious villa is tastefully decorated with antiques and vintage prints. The villa’s name comes from its selection of books on (local) wildlife and nature. For those who prefer the real thing, the front deck overlooking the wild awaits.

Saruni Mara food experience

Foodies are in for a very special treat at Saruni Mara. The lodge’s chefs take their meals very seriously and use farm fresh organic produce to whip up the most delicious meals. Among the lovely meals prepared by the lodge, you can even enjoy fine Italian cuisine based on the Italian owner’s own family recipes. Lovely meals are served at long wooden communal tables. However, you can also opt for a bush breakfast deep in an acacia forest or on the banks of the Mara River. At the end of the day enjoy an al fresco bush dinner beneath the stars or even a very private and romantic candlelit dinner on your own cottage deck. If you’re in the mood to share a few safari stories with fellow guests, the Kuro House has a few comfortable chairs and fireside drinks waiting for you.

Activities at Saruni Mara

Saruni Mara offers a wide variety of activities for its guests. Start your day off with an early morning Land Rover game drive with a Masai guide and tracker or join a Maasai warrior on an adventurous bush walk through the hills. The Maasai have ancestral knowledge of the Masai Mara ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabits it. They will help you make the most of your safari activities. The lodge also offers excursions to local Maasai manyattas (villages).

For a more extreme safari adventure, you can also opt to take to the skies on a hot air balloon safari . Please note that although game drives/ nature walks are included in the price of your stay, hot air balloon rides require a surcharge.

During your downtime, you can visit the lodge’s award-winning spa – the ‘Masai Wellbeing Space’. The spa’s specially trained Masai staff provide treatments inspired by ancient Masai customs using local plants. Each cottage receives one complimentary half-hour classic back & neck massage. The spa’s serene olive tree and cedar forest surroundings are sure to help you relax and unwind.

For a more hands-on activity Saruni Mara offers a program called the ‘Warriors Academy’. This program is especially fun for families with children. In the course of a few days guests are taught Masai warrior survival skills such as how to track animals and how to make tools out in the wild.

Accommodation.

Saruni Mara has 5 cottages, 3 x doubles and 2 x twin rooms (that can become double), each ensuite, a family villa and a private villa, for a total capacity of 18 guests. All cottages and villas have fantastic views over the surrounding hills and the Mara plains below. They are carefully furnished in a personal, elegant way with unique objects of classic style that evoke the golden days of African safaris. Cottages and villas are all very spacious, each cottage and villa has a different theme and all allow private dining, if required. They have verandas, and roofs made of African hand-made “makuti” tiles.

The four cottages are build on a hill overlooking the Masai Mara plains. Beautifully furnished and spacious, with a bedroom and a en-suite bathroom, the cottages have a large front deck for relaxing in the day and star gazing at night. Each cottage is furnished with a traditional theme.  They are large, comfortable and overlook the valley where the lodge is located, surrounded by pure nature

This is the perfect romantic retreat, simply and elegantly designed for long hours of relaxation. The honeymoon cottage is a wonderfully secluded cottage, with elegant furnishings and beautiful antiques create a feeling of classic elegance and romance. The bedroom is very spacious, and opens out onto a large verandah with a magnificent view of the valley leading onto the Masai plains – the perfect private dining area.

This unit is Saruni Mara’s family villa. The stylish new villa has two en-suite bedrooms, a large lounge complete with dining area and big, welcoming fireplace. There is also an impressive large verandah overlooking the magnificent scenery of the Masai Mara. The villa is decorated with a selection of antique and vintage prints.

Maasai warriors guide you throughout, sharing their ancient wisdom of the area and animals and their fascinating way of life.

There are 120 rooms, from standard guest rooms to the grand Equatorial Suite, where Sir Winston Churchill used to stay. It’s split in two by the equator, so your room mate could be sleeping in the southern hemisphere while you doze in the northern. All rooms have views of either the gardens, the forest or of Mount Kenya, and have a country club atmosphere, with wood-burning fireplaces, large, indulgent beds and luxurious furnishings. The marble bathrooms have separate WCs and rain showers and plenty of Fairmont products. Many also have separate bathtubs.

Deluxe View Room

The Deluxe View room offers breathtaking views of the majestic mountain. One can relax with a steaming cup of tea as you watch the sun rise against the poignant mountain backdrop. The room is spacious, luxuriously furnished with a sitting area and features a cozy fire place. It’s complemented with a plush King sized bed and furnished with a 32” Plasma screen, a dressing table and built-in wardrobes. Mawingo Suite

Aptly named after the ‘love nest’ of the first owners of the club, the stunning suite is fashioned with a luxurious five-piece en suite bathroom, a spacious lounge with a beautiful stone fire place and a private terrace overlooking the garden. Additional amenity includes a separate vanity room adjacent to the bedroom.

Garden Suite

The cozy and inviting suite provides all the comforts of home. The spacious lounge is separated from the bedroom with a beautiful stone fire place that can warm you up from the comfort of the lounge or the bedroom. Located within walking distance from the main building, the suite has a five-piece en suite bathroom and a private terrace overlooking the beautiful lawn gardens and coffee bushes.

Raymond Suite

The Raymond Suite is luxuriously furnished to give the suite a comfy and inviting atmosphere. Signature Suite

Similar to the Manor Suite, the Signature Suite offers a stunning view of the majestic mountain and is located on the historical block of the resort. Named after the founder, the William Holden Cottages reflect the history and charm of the original residence. The stunning cottage has two adjoining bedrooms which can be closed off for individual privacy or sold as a one or two bed roomed suite, each furnished with all the suite features and amenities.

Located on the river side and 2 minutes drive away from the main building, the suite is uniquely situated, providing a magnificent view of Mount Kenya from a tranquil seclusion. Riverside Deluxe Suite

There’s also Zebar, the cosy lounge in which to sit by the fire with a cocktail before dinner. Enjoy an elegant dining affair at the Tusks Resturant, one of the most exquisite restaurants in Nanyuki. It offers a sophisticated indoor set up which extends onto a terrace, with a great view of the majestic mountain. Adjacent to it is the Zebar, a great spot to unwind after a day of adventure, whilst the Swimming Pool Bar is perfect for a tranquil rendezvous. The Mawingo room is popular for hosting private dinners and cocktail parties.

Facing the snow-capped Mount Kenya and overlooking the property’s beautifully manicured grounds, the signature restaurant boasts a menu abounding with the incredible variety of foods that are farmed in Central Kenya. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, this elegant setting features terrace and indoor dinning around the original grand fireplace. Breakfast and lunch are served as buffet offering the best of what Kenya has to offer, dinner is served as a four course’s set menu with vegetarian options. Tusks Restaurant offers fantastic views on to Mount Kenya forest and snow caped peaks, in the evening, the original fire place will provide a warm and cozy atmosphere. Seating capacity is 120 people.

Zebar features large windows overlooking the gardens, snow covered peak of Mount Kenya and beyond. In addition to offering a relaxed lounge atmosphere, Zebar, resting on the equator, is one of the few places in the world where your server will have to cross from the southern to the northern hemisphere to retrieve your order. The menu includes choice of liqueurs, beers, soft drinks, cocktails, wines, spirits, tea and coffee, as well as a bar snacks.

Swimming Pool Bar

Relax by the pool, while your waiter serves you a refreshing cocktail crafted at the Zebar. Liqueurs, soft drinks, cocktails, tea and coffee, as well as a snack menu are served from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm.

Saruni Camp is in a private and exclusive 74,000-acre wildlife concession, making it the perfect place to enjoy uninterrupted peace in style and comfort. It is the smallest permanent lodge in the Mara ecosystem.

Centred around the unique private lodge, the accommodation includes five cottages, a family suite and a private house. All of the cottages are beautifully decorated and individually themed. There is also a private villa with two bedrooms - one of the few properties in the Mara offering this. The accommodation boasts incredible views of the Mara plains, en-suite facilities and plenty of interesting features to enjoy through the evenings for couples and families. The food has an Italian touch, the use of local ingredients such as vegetables and fish is important. You can eat in a communal dining area to share safari tales, or enjoy a more intimate atmosphere by eating in your cottage. There is even a tame eland that was orphaned as a baby and raised by cattle, who lives in the camp and regularly wanders through inquisitively, munching on the lawns and greeting the new guests

Two daily game drives take place with the option of spending a day with Masai warriors, who will share their knowledge of the wildlife and secret corners of one of the most celebrated reserves in Kenya. You also have the option of a night vehicle safari in the conservancy too. Afternoons can be spent relaxing at the well-being spa, where guests enjoy a complimentary massage. There is also a small gift shop at the camp.

Children and families might like to take part in the special Saruni Mara Warrior Academy, a great way to combine fun and learning with wildlife and culture, and perfect for all the family. This interactive experience gives a fascinating insight into the Maasai tribe, and guided by the 'Moran', or warriors, participants will find out about the lives of these colourful people, and take part in activities such as learning how to use bows, arrows and spears, how to bead traditional artefacts and hearing some tribal stories and songs. The Warrior Academy can be easily combined with regular safari activities, and can last from half a day up to three days.
