Meet The Folk-Pop Music Duo: The Well Pennies

The Well Pennies are based in Des Moines, Iowa. We've been hearing from them live as Morning Edition broadcasts from Smokey Row Coffee Co. during the coverage of the Iowa caucuses.

RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:

So we have had the benefit of live music in our shows this week from Iowa. The Well Pennies have been with us. They're a husband-and-wife folk-pop duo from right here in Des Moines. Their names are Bryan and Sarah Vanderpool, and a lot of their songs are about coming home to the Midwest.

(SOUNDBITE OF THE WELL PENNIES SONG, "DRIVE")

SARAH VANDERPOOL: I grew up here in Iowa - in Des Moines. My parents still live in the same house that they lived in when they brought me home from the hospital as a newborn.

BRYAN VANDERPOOL: I grew up in Boston. We met playing in various coffee shops. And when we met, we instantly had this, you know, musical connection.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DRIVE")

THE WELL PENNIES: (Singing) There you go tapping at my window. There you go rattling my heart.

B VANDERPOOL: We fell in love with each other, moved across the country to California. We lived there for about eight years before moving back to Iowa.

S VANDERPOOL: We were doing music out there. But as anybody knows if they live on the coast, it's very expensive and can actually be kind of - I don't know - draining and a little overwhelming. Iowa, it's just so much more laid-back. It's so unapologetically Midwestern. You know, the whole state comes from farmers. There's a lot of family. It's just very chill.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "NOBODY LOVES ME LIKE YOU")

THE WELL PENNIES: (Singing) Take a breath, little light. Burn it up with me tonight.

B VANDERPOOL: I've always lived on the coasts in cities, in high rises and busy streets. And so to live in someplace where there is huge, wide open spaces and fields that you can't see the end of, Iowa just kind of cultivates a creative spirit.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "OH MY BLUE SKY")

THE WELL PENNIES: (Singing) Oh, my, have you ever seen such a blue sky? Oh, what I would do up so high...

S VANDERPOOL: Coming back to the Midwest, I'm like, ugh, it feels so free to me. Our vibe of our music is we wanted to cheer ourselves up. We want a musical Snuggie to (laughter) cozy with. That's kind of Midwestern - sweet, comforting and calm.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "OOH LA LA")

THE WELL PENNIES: (Singing) Ooh, la, la, la, la. Don't you want to feel it, too?

MARTIN: We are here at Smokey Row coffeehouse in Des Moines with our audience. Everyone alert and enthusiastic...

Leaving Los Angeles: How a Move to the Midwest Paid Off for the Well Pennies

EDITOR’S NOTE:  This story is an extension of the exploration in our summer journal of how people and music migrate and mix. For more stories on the theme we’re calling (Im)migration, check out the summer journal here .

*      *      *

Bryan and Sarah Vanderpool make soft-spoken, big-hearted folk full of lush vocal harmonies and intricate string passages. It’s a sound that translates well to television: their band, the Well Pennies, have had songs featured in The Fosters  and Switched at Birth . But in their Des Moines, Iowa, neighborhood, surrounded by neighbors that include a police officer, teacher, and medical professionals, the fact they make music at all is a curiosity. The married couple is part of a growing enclave of creatives in Des Moines that includes visual artists, musicians, and — as Bryan emphatically adds — a coffee shop that that bests industry tastemaker Intelligentsia.

“Keep calling it a flyover state,” he jokes of the often-overlooked location. “We don’t want any more people. They’re flooding in!”

Although they share an enthusiasm for their adopted hometown, The Well Pennies are very much newbies, having made the transition from California to Iowa in May 2015 after buying a house via a Skype video call with Sarah’s parents, who live near the Iowan capital. (The pair shrug off how crazy this seems, noting that their only real housing goal was a basement with enough room for a studio and “good bones.”)

Although they met in Boston, Massachusetts, where both were living at the time, the duo’s real-life La La Land expedition wasn’t without success. During their half decade in Los Angeles, the Well Pennies experienced several career highlights, including finding their backing band (which they still record and tour with), recording their 2015 debut album Endlings (named for the last creature of any species), and seeing their bucolic folk serve as the theme song for Spanish television show Mi Casa es La Tuya,  which afforded them a notable fan base in Latin countries. (“We’re dying to tour Spain!” Bryan says enthusiastically.)

But working day jobs to help make ends meet, and suffering from the burnout that comes with attempting to multitask between daily life and “living the dream,” it became obvious that in order to grow as artists they were going to have to move. They had hit a wall, both creatively and financially. They also saw the transition as an opportunity to opt out of the creative rat race.

“When you’re in California, you’re working so hard to just physically be there and pay rent,” Bryan muses. “Survive — the music stuff comes later. You’re so exhausted from that, that when you go to write music all that comes are tired, cynical songs … . The desperation got tiring … also I think when you’re surrounded by that many people who are striving to make it, whatever that may mean, there’s this desperation that exhausts you. Everyone is threatened by you. Because they’re all clamoring for the same spot. Everyone is competition with each other. That got old pretty fast.”

Leaving Los Angeles was something that the couple didn’t takelightly. It was only after asking for advice from friends and family, their band, and even their lawyer (the only person who said they should stay put) that the couple moved to Sarah’s hometown. They chose Des Moines from a list of locations that included Seattle, Boston, and Montana. Not only did the move to the Midwest allow them to realize their dream of homeownership — at a price far lower than the rent on their Northern Los Angeles apartment — but it also freed the Well Pennies to pursue music full time. For them that included teaching lessons, renting out their studio, and unexpectedly snagging a slot opening for Diana Krall on a string of West Coast dates. After gigging for bar patrons, the musicians found the shift to older, more attentive fans refreshing, and they took nightly trips to the merch table to meet the audience.

“The first show we did in Ohio, talk about throwing you off!” Sarah recalls. “We got a standing ovation as openers! In the mic I was like, ‘Oh! Okay! Really? Great! Thank you.’ Classy, Sarah! It was surprising. Who gives standing ovations to openers? That’s what we were dealing with most of the time. It was heavenly.”

The transition has also given them time to work on their sophomore album,  Murmurations , due out later this year. While  Endlings  was an introspective album, Murmurations’ overarching theme is about accepting the person you are, and the larger part you have to play in life. “Figure out who you are, and do it on purpose,” says Sarah, echoing the famous Dolly Parton quote.

The first single from that album, folk anthem “The River,” features the telling line, “Go and do / the river is right in front of you,” words that perfectly pair with where the Well Pennies have found themselves. To hear Bryan and Sarah tell it, they would never have found the career they did without ignoring the fear and jumping in. The Vanderpools are content with where they’ve landed, their neighborhood, and their near all-consuming passion to build up their in-home studio. But to hear them tell it, they never once regretted jumping into life on the West Coast, or leaving it behind to find their next adventure.

“I think everything happens for a reason and at a certain time,” says Sarah. “We felt inclined to go to Los Angeles. We considered moving to New York. No, if we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it all the way — to the other side of the coast … . We did the stereotypical thing of throwing it all to the wind and seeing what happens. So, we were there for a time, and we did start to feel a sense of restlessness. Maybe this isn’t feeling right anymore. And then it’s like, it’s time to move onto a new chapter. This just felt right.”

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

Jennifer Lopez  has canceled seven dates of her first North American tour in five years, in support of her new album “This Is Me… Now ” and its pair of companion films.

The dates spanning Aug. 20-31 in Cleveland, Nashville, Raleigh, Atlanta, Tampa, New Orleans and Houston were listed as canceled on Ticketmaster at some point on Wednesday; the Cleveland and Houston dates apparently had been removed from the itinerary earlier, as they were part of the tour’s originally announced itinerary on Feb. 15 but are no longer present on the site at all. An u pdated itinerary can be found on her social media accounts.

The album, tour and two films are part of a self-financed $20 million three-part multimedia project examining, as Variety described in a recent cover article , “Lopez’s life as a serial romantic,” regarding her reunion with actor Ben Affleck, whom she married in 2022 nearly two decades after the high-profile superstar couple originally split in the wake of their flop 2003 romantic comedy “Gigli.”

A rep for the artist did not immediately respond to Variety ’s request for comment; the cancellation notice reads simply, “Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event. No action is required to obtain a refund.”

The cancellations come after Lopez’s new album — her first in a decade — also titled “This Is Me…Now,” debuted at a disappointing No. 38 on the Billboard 200 last month.

The project, which also includes the musical film, “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” and a documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” is apparently intended as a love-conquers-all statement.

“Everybody thought I was crazy,” Lopez told Variety . “And by the way, I thought I was crazy.”

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

There is a lot of history in Moscow to explore!

What a handy guide to get the most of Moscow’s red square! I’ve always wanted to try a walking tour and this looks like the perfect place to start!

I really enjoy walking tours, I think they are a great way to get to know a new place!

You have highlighted all the main sights around and in the Red Square indeed! I have visited Moscow in winter and the atmosphere was magical…even though it was cold 🙂 I’m looking forward to visiting in summer too!

Yes, there is a magical feel during the winter. I have to say I prefer the warmer, brighter summers though 🙂

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. Please check out my other posts as you are planning your trip and feel free to send any questions my way!

I’m a huge fan of taking free walking tours whenever my husband and I travel. We learn more about the history from the local’s perspective. Your walking tour in Moscow looks fun. The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful and would love to see it. Thanks for sharing the must-see places in Moscow!

I’m a big fan of free walking tours too! I completely agree that you get a good perspective and introduction to the history of the city.

' src=

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

' src=

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

St. Basil’s cathedral is definitely a beautiful place to visit. I would also love to stroll by the Alexander gardens and maybe spend some time in the shopping mall call mom maybe visit the theater, also I would love to visit Kremlin and the State Historical Museum. That’s a great list you have managed to provide here.

Never been to Russia, but the country’s history and culture has always fascinated me. Great list of things to do in Moscow’s Red Square. Kremlin is definitely on top of my list!

Russia does have a fascinating history and culture!

Screen Rant

11 greatest misheard taylor swift lyrics that the eras tour movie reminds us everyone got wrong.

Some of Taylor Swift’s most commonly misheard lyrics across her vast catalog of music are from songs that are featured in The Eras Tour movie.

  • Some of Taylor Swift's most commonly misheard lyrics are from songs featured in The Eras Tour movie, such as "he looks so pretty like a devil" in "Cruel Summer" and "Starbucks lovers" in "Blank Space."
  • The actual words to Swift's songs remain unchanged in The Eras Tour movie, but subtitles may reveal commonly misunderstood lyrics, adding surprise for fans.
  • Some lyrics that even diehard Swifties still don't know they're singing wrong include "fake interview" in "Style" and "I touch my phone as if it's your face" in "You're On Your Own, Kid."

Taylor Swift has a ton of misheard lyrics throughout her vast catalog of music, many of which are from songs featured in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour . After an enormously successful theatrical run and a VOD extended cut, The Eras Tour movie finally hit streaming on March 14, 2024, as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) on Disney+ . Along with all the songs from the theatrical version, this release also includes four previously cut songs and four bonus acoustic songs, making for a total of 48 songs in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) .

Across all 10 eras in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) , Swift performs the greatest hits from her lengthy music career, as well as some fan favorites and hidden gems. Although Swift makes some changes to her songs on The Eras Tour by condensing or simply singing them a little differently, she doesn't actually alter any of the lyrics. However, viewers watching Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour on Disney+ with subtitles might still be surprised by what they read on the screen, since some of the songs from the concert movie contain some of her most commonly misheard lyrics.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) is available to stream on Disney+.

The 2 Taylor Swift Songs Still Missing From The Eras Tour Movie (Taylor's Version)

11 “he looks so pretty like a devil” - cruel summer, real lyric: “he looks up grinning like a devil”.

One of Swift's most notoriously misheard lyrics in her whole discography can be heard very early on in The Eras Tour movie —in fact, it's only the second song in the very first era. After opening the show with "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince," Swift greets the audience before jumping right into her late-stage hit, "Cruel Summer." After the second chorus, Swift takes a beat before speaking directly to the audience. She informs them that they've " arrived at the very first bridge of the evening " and asks them to " prove " that they know the lyrics to the iconic bridge.

After she sings " I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard? " at the end of the bridge on "Cruel Summer," Swift shouts out a line in which she compares her lover to " a devil ." When Lover was first released in July 2019, this lyric was widely misinterpreted as " he looks so pretty like a devil ," and many continued to believe that's what Swift was saying here for a long time. However, what Swift actually says is " he looks up grinning like a devil ."

10 “Handsome, Did I Mention With A View?” - Delicate

Real lyric: “handsome, you’re a mansion with a view”.

During the reputation era in The Eras Tour movie, Swift performs the love song "Delicate," which details a romance in the early stages back when Swift was persona non grata and her reputation had " never been worse ." Swift begins the second line of the second verse with the word " handsome " to describe her lover. There are many variations of what people think the full line is, such as " handsome, did I mention with a view? " or the even more accurate " handsome, in a mansion with a view ."

Swift is actually referring to her "handsome" lover himself as the "mansion with a view," a metaphor for his astounding good looks.

While most got the " handsome " and " view " part right, and some even got " mansion " right too, the correct line is " handsome, you're a mansion with a view ." The confusion may stem from the preceding line, " third floor on the West Side, me and you, " as this directly refers to real estate in the literal rather than figurative sense. However, Swift is actually referring to her " handsome " lover himself as the " mansion with a view, " a metaphor for his astounding good looks.

9 "Roaring 20s, Tossing Panties In The Pool” - The 1

Real lyric: "roaring 20s, tossing pennies in the pool".

In The Eras Tour movie, Swift begins the folklore era by singing the album opener, "the 1." On the chorus of "the 1," Swift reminisces about all the good times she had in her past relationship with the subject, whom she hoped would be "The One." She begins the chorus by singing, " but we were something, don't you think so? " followed by " roaring 20s, tossing pennies in the pool. " As indicated by the next line, " if my wishes came true ," this " tossing pennies " lyric is a reference to the act of throwing coins into a fountain to make a wish.

However, a lot of folklore listeners thought Swift said " panties " instead of " pennies, " giving the lyric a much more suggestive connotation. " Pennies " does sound a lot like " panties " when sung, especially with a soft "t." The presumed implication could just be that they were skinny-dipping, but either way, it changes the meaning and imagery of the lyric quite a bit.

8 “Fake Interview, Oh/It’s Been A While Since I Have Even Heard From You” - Style

Real lyric: "fade into view, oh/it’s been a while since i have even heard from you”.

Yet another era opener with a (few) misheard lyric(s), "Style" kicks off the 1989 era in The Eras Tour movie. On the very first verse, Swift sets the scene of the timeless relationship that serves as the subject of the song. On the last line before the pre-chorus, Swift sings, " fade into view, oh/it's been a while since I have even heard from you (heard from you) ." However, the " fade into view " part is commonly misheard as " fake interview, " completely changing the function and meaning of the lyric.

This is one of those lyrics that many wouldn't even think to question unless it was brought to their attention, so it's likely that most misinterpreters never stopped to consider the meaning.

Since "Style" is widely believed to be about Swift's famous ex-boyfriend and fellow pop star, Harry Styles (hence the title), it makes sense that he might give an interview about their relationship. What a " fake interview " would entail is less clear, but this is one of those lyrics that many wouldn't even think to question unless it was brought to their attention, so it's likely that most misinterpreters never stopped to consider the meaning. Maybe the assumption was that he lied in an interview, or that someone was trying to interrogate Styles about Swift under the guise of an interview.

7 "And I Got That Good Girl Thing" - Style

Real lyric: "and i got that good girl faith".

"Style" is once again the scene of the crime of another frequently misheard lyric , although in this case, it's only a one-word difference that doesn't change the general meaning of the line as much. On the chorus of "Style," Swift lists aesthetic attributes about her and her lover that " never go out of style. " For herself, she says, " and I got that red lip classic thing that you like " followed by " and I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt ."

The misheard lyric may be a much more vague descriptor (not to mention lazy songwriting), but it still makes logical sense.

Instead of " faith ," though, a lot of people thought she was just saying " thing " again after " good girl. " Even though "faith" and "thing" sound nothing alike when spoken, the one-syllable words are easy to mix up when sung in a busy pop song. The misheard lyric may be a much more vague descriptor (not to mention lazy songwriting), but it still makes logical sense, which is probably why many still may not realize they've been singing this line wrong since 1989 was released in 2014, even after seeing The Eras Tour movie.

6 "All The Lonely Starbucks Lovers" - Blank Space

Real lyric: "got a long list of ex-lovers".

In The Eras Tour movie, the very next song after "Style" in the 1989 era is "Blank Space," which contains, without a doubt, her most commonly misheard lyric ever. "Blank Space" serves as a satire that leans into the media's portrayal of her as boy-crazy with an overactive love life and pokes fun at this image. In the spirit of this, Swift notes on the chorus that she's " got a long list of ex-lovers/they'll tell you I'm insane ."

"Starbucks lovers" became a cultural phenomenon and remains her most absurd and nonsensical misheard lyric to date, which is partially what makes it so iconic.

When "Blank Space" was first released in 2014, it seemed like the majority of listeners heard some variation of " all the lonely Starbucks lovers " instead of " got a long list of ex-lovers. " Some did hear the " got a long list " part correctly, but the common denominator was " Starbucks lovers ," which caused a lot of confusion, because why would enthusiasts of the popular coffee chain be calling Swift " insane "? Although Swift quickly set the record straight, " Starbucks lovers " became a cultural phenomenon and remains her most absurd and nonsensical misheard lyric to date, which is partially what makes it so iconic.

5 "He’s So Dull And Handsome As Hell” - Wildest Dreams

Real lyric: "he’s so tall and handsome as hell”.

It's almost as if the shock of Swift's official transition into pop music threw everybody off, considering just how many lyrics from 1989 still get misinterpreted. Although "Wildest Dreams" was one of the songs cut from Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie in theaters, it was thankfully restored in the Disney+ release in its proper placement on the set list. Not only was it a welcome addition, but the inclusion of "Wildest Dreams" in The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) was also a reminder of one of Swift's funniest misheard lyrics that accidentally insults the song's subject.

"Wildest Dreams" describes a fleeting romance that Swift hopes her lover will still look back on and remember fondly, even if it's only while he sleeps. At the top of the pre-chorus of "Wildest Dreams," Swift fawns over her lover's good looks, stating that " he's so tall and handsome as hell. " However, many thought she was actually emphasizing how " dull " he is rather than " tall ," making the subject sound like a pretty face with not much else to offer.

8 Biggest Differences Between The Eras Tour’s Theatrical & Disney+ Streaming Versions

4 "i touch my phone as it fits your face" - you're on your own, kid, real lyric: "i touch my phone as if it's your face".

Of the three surprise songs she played on piano while filming The Eras Tour movie , Swift chose to include her performance of the Midnights track, "You're On Your Own, Kid," for the acoustic set in the film. This musical retrospective chronicles Swift's journey as a songwriter and all the " blood, sweat, and tears " that went into building her successful career. On the first verse, Swift recalls a crush from her youth who, it later turns out, " never cared " about her.

Since "You're On Your Own, Kid" plays twice in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) movie, this auditory illusion can be heard again in the new post-credits section called "The Acoustic Collection."

To emphasize how strong her feelings were, Swift sings " I touch my phone as if it's your face " during a phone call with him. Because of how the syllables bleed into the next in this line, it was a common misconception that Swift was actually singing, " I touch my phone as it fits your face. " Since "You're On Your Own, Kid" plays twice in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) movie , this auditory illusion can be heard again in the new post-credits section called "The Acoustic Collection."

3 "I Miss You, But I Miss Spider-Man" - Bejeweled

Real lyric: “i miss you, but i miss sparkling”.

The 1989 era may be the worst culprit of misheard lyrics in The Eras Tour movie, but including "You're On Your Own, Kid" from the acoustic set, Midnights as an album gives 1989 a run for its money. Although the Disney+ release contains a new post-credits section called "The Acoustic Collection," Midnights is the final era in The Eras Tour movie on the regular set list, so naturally, it contains more songs than most eras. One of the songs that Swift performs is the fun-filled "Bejeweled," which includes a wildly misinterpreted lyric right before the second chorus.

After reminding her lover that she can " reclaim the land " of love she gave him, Swift admits that while she does miss him, she misses something else even more. Believe it or not, more than a handful of people thought Swift was saying, " I miss Spider-Man " in this line. However, she's actually saying, " I miss sparkling ," which fits the theme of "Bejeweled" a lot more than the Marvel superhero. This wasn't nearly as common of a misinterpretation as " Starbucks lovers, " but it falls under a similar category and makes about as much sense, too.

2 "Poncho En Fiesta For You It's Not" - Karma

Real lyric: "aren't you envious that for you it's not".

One of the lyrics on Midnights was so misleading that people thought it was in a completely different language. To close out the Midnights era and The Eras Tour as a whole, Swift performs the upbeat track "Karma." The song is all about how the subject will face the consequences of their actions, including their mistreatment of Swift and overall bad behavior, soon enough. Essentially, their karmic debt will cost them in the end, but Swift can't relate, since her karma's never been better.

On the chorus, Swift lists all the ways good karma has manifested in her life. " Karma's a relaxing thought ," she sings, " aren't you envious that for you it's not? " Because of the production, high-pitched vocals, unconventional phrasing, and the emphasis Swift puts on "vious" in " envious ," the second part of this line is admittedly hard to decipher. In fact, it was so deceiving that some listeners heard the partially Spanish phrase " poncho en fiesta for you it's not. " This doesn't make much sense in context, but in strictly auditory terms, it's actually not that much of a reach.

In Swift's more recent shows on The Eras Tour, she's been changing the lyric "karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me " to " karma is the guy on the Chiefs " as a nod to her boyfriend Travis Kelce, who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.

1 "My Panties Made Your Ground" - Karma

Real lyric: "my pennies made your crown".

"Karma" is similar to "Style" in that it contains multiple auditory illusions. However, it's even more similar to "the 1," one lyric in "Karma" is also commonly misheard thanks to the word " pennies ." "Karma" is widely thought to be about Swift's feud with Scooter Braun, who purchased her masters in 2019, which propelled her to re-record every Taylor Swift album he owns to reclaim ownership of her work. On the second verse of "Karma," Swift sings, " my pennies made your crown, " which would apply to Braun.

However, even Swifties who knew about the song's suspected subject's history with Swift didn't pick up on the "pennies" part. Instead, just like in "the 1," many mistook " pennies " for " panties ," and some even thought she was saying " my panties made your ground " instead of " crown ." Like many of the misheard lyrics from songs in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , this wouldn't make much sense if it was the real lyric, but it goes to show that some words are just bound to sound like a different word in song form.

The First Look: Valspar Championship

The First Look

Change Text Size

The PGA TOUR’s Florida Swing reaches its conclusion at the Valspar Championship just outside Tampa, as players cross the state after THE PLAYERS Championship last week.

Several top PGA TOUR pros have made the short trip from TPC Sawgrass to Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course, which features the famed “Snake Pit” trio of closing holes. Taylor Moore returns to defend his 2023 title, with past winners in the field including Jordan Spieth and Sam Burns.

Here’s everything you need to know before play begins at Innisbrook.

FIELD NOTES: Xander Schauffele, fresh off his T2 at THE PLAYERS, will return to action at the Valspar. Schauffele has five top-10 finishes in seven events so far this season. He last played Innisbrook in 2022 where he finished T12 … Brian Harman , who tied Schauffele and Wyndham Clark at 19-under at THE PLAYERS, one shot back of Scottie Scheffler’s winning total, makes the trip to Innisbrook as well. Harman is rounding into form, having gone T12-T2 in his last two starts. But his effort at Innisbrook has been curious over the last decade. He has missed the cut in five of his last six Valspar appearances, but his one made cut resulted in a T5 in 2022 … Sam Burns returns to Innisbrook – a place he’s had plenty of success – looking for another win. Burns went back-to-back at the Valspar in 2021 and 2022 and finished sixth a year ago. He has notched four top-12s in five starts at Innisbrook, and he has yet to miss a cut … Justin Thomas is hoping to turn things around after a missed cut at THE PLAYERS. Thomas finished 10th last year and was third the year prior. He’s missed just one cut at the Valspar in his career … Tony Finau returns to Innisbrook for the first time since 2018. While he’s missed the cut three out of four times at Innisbrook, he did finish fifth in 2017 … Taylor Moore returns to Tampa looking to go back-to-back at the Valspar. Moore has found the weekend in all seven of his PGA TOUR starts this season … 2015 Valspar winner Spieth also returns. Spieth has finished in the top 20 at Innisbrook in five of his six starts, including a T3 a year ago.

SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: Fred Biondi will play for the fourth time this season on the PGA TOUR. He’s back in action after finishing T32 at the Puerto Rico Open. Biondi, the 2023 NCAA individual champion at the University of Florida, has made the cut in all four of his Korn Ferry Tour starts so far this season … Biondi’s University of Florida teammate Ricky Castillo will make his non-major debut on the PGA TOUR. Castillo, who debuted at the 2020 U.S. Open, turned pro last year and has made plenty of noise on the Korn Ferry Tour so far this season. The 23-year-old has made his last five cuts and finished no worse than T20, including two top-five showings … Nick Gabrelcik returns to action at the Valspar. The University of North Florida senior grew up just 20 minutes from Innisbrook and made the cut in 2023. He volunteered at the event as a standard bearer as a youngster. Gabrelick is a nine-time collegiate winner … Kevin Roy will return to action on the PGA TOUR. The upstate New York native lost his TOUR card after 2023 but has made all four cuts on the Korn Ferry Tour this season including a runner-up at the season opener … Rounding out the sponsor exemptions are TOUR veterans Luke Donald and Ryan Palmer.

COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: Shane Lowry moved inside the Aon Next 10 (from No. 11 to No. 9) after his T19 at THE PLAYERS, highlighted by a final-round 66 … Lowry was the only player who made a move inside the Aon Next 10 at THE PLAYERS … The Aon Swing 5 standings remained unchanged. The next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the RBC Heritage in mid-April. The Aon Swing 5 standings for that event starts with the Puerto Rico Open and continues this week at the Valspar Championship, followed by the Texas Children’s Houston Open and Valero Texas Open. With his win at the Puerto Rico Open, Brice Garnett stands No. 1 on the Aon Swing 5 race.

FEDEXCUP: The winner receives 500 FedExCup points.

COURSE: Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead), par 71, 7,340 yards

Located just north of Tampa, the tree-lined, Larry Packard design puts a premium on positioning off the tee. The course, which opened in the early 1970s, features a tough three-hole closing stretch known as the “Snake Pit” – two tough par 4s sandwiched between a bruising 200-yard par 3. Last year the rough height was increased to 3.75 inches from 3 inches in prior years – look for that to be a factor again on the golf course in 2024.

72-HOLE RECORD: 266, Vijay Singh (2004)

18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Matt NeSmith (Round 2, 2022), Padraig Harrington (Round 1, 2012)

LAST TIME: Taylor Moore won for the first time on the PGA TOUR after a Sunday 67 at the Valspar Championship, topping Adam Schenk by one. Moore finished strong, making two birdies in his final four holes. He was waiting for a playoff before Spieth stumbled into the house. Spieth made bogey on the par-4 16th but appeared to be right back in it after hitting his tee ball on the par-3 17th to just 6 feet. He missed that birdie try, however, and bogeyed the 72nd hole of the championship to finish two shots behind Moore’s winning total. Spieth finished tied for third alongside Tommy Fleetwood while Wyndham Clark finished fifth.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. — Epson Tour graduate Gabriela Ruffels raced up the leaderboard on Moving Day at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, carding a 6-under 65 at Palos Verdes Golf Club that saw her make one bogey and seven birdies on a windy day in Southern California.

Starting her day at 1-under, the 23-year-old shot out of the gate, carding four consecutive birdies on holes two through five and then grabbing another birdie on the par-5 7th hole to turn in 31, now sitting at 6-under overall with nine holes to play.

The Australian cooled off on the back nine, dropping her only shot of the day on the par-4 10th hole and making five pars in a row before picking up her sixth birdie of the round on 16. After a par on 17, Ruffels then managed to snag one last birdie on the par-4 18th hole to post a 65, the 2024 LPGA Tour rookie’s lowest 18-hole score since becoming a Tour member and tying her career-low round on the LPGA Tour, which she last shot on day two of the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

“I putted really well out there today. I kind of knew that it wasn't going to be a very low-scoring day with the wind,” said Ruffels, who hit 26 total putts in the third round. “I knew the wind was really going to get up around (noon), and I teed off at 10:30. It was just taking advantage of those calm conditions and weathering the storm as the wind picked up towards the back nine and staying patient out there, which I was really happy I was able to do.”

Ruffels graduated to the LPGA Tour from the Epson Tour after winning three titles in 2023 at the Carlisle Arizona Women's Golf Classic, Garden City Charity Classic and Four Winds Invitational and finishing first in the Epson Tour’s Race for the Card, ultimately earning 2023 Player of the Year honors at the end of last season.

The University of Southern California alum is more than familiar with Palos Verdes Golf Club having played at the venue often during her collegiate career and has been using that local knowledge to her advantage this week in just her third start as an LPGA Tour member. She missed the cut in her rookie debut at the LPGA Drive On Championship, righting the ship with a T15 finish at the Blue Bay LPGA in the People’s Republic of China, and now will be looking to capture her first top 10 of the year on Sunday at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship.

While that pressure would be more than enough to rattle most rookies, Ruffels is no stranger to LPGA Tour success, earning five top-20 results in 22 total starts as a non-member, three of which were in major championships. So, a final round in contention shouldn’t pose too much stress for the young talent, at least until Ruffels has a chance at victory coming down the stretch on Sunday.

But until that chance presents itself, she’s just focused on taking advantage where she can in her last 18 holes at Palos Verdes Golf Club, a strategy that worked well for Ruffels on Saturday in SoCal.

“This course is not easy,” said the rookie. “I think the wind is going to be pretty high tomorrow as well, so just staying patient and trying to take advantage of the first couple of holes out there.”

And Ruffels will also relish the opportunity to vie for her first LPGA Tour title in front of a somewhat hometown crowd on the final day of the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, considering her connections to the Los Angeles area.

“My mom grew up here. This is her hometown, and I'm staying with my aunt this week,” she said. “My whole extended family lives in this area, and I also went to USC. I have a lot of ties to this area and this place. It's cool to be around family this week. I feel very relaxed and at home. It's been fun.”

Stung by Taylor Swift tour snub, Thailand seals deals for music festivals to boost ailing economy

the well pennies tour

After missing out on Taylor Swift’s world tour, Thailand has sealed deals to host Summer Sonic and Tomorrowland music festivals as it pushes event-driven tourism to propel Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

Summer Sonic  will come to Southeast Asia for the first time in its second venture outside of Japan, with dates set for Aug. 24 and 25 in Bangkok after shows in Tokyo and Osaka, according to Thai government spokesman Chai Wacharonke. Thailand will also be hosting dance music festival  Tomorrowland  in 2026, which may be only the first of 10 consecutive editions, Chai said in a statement on Saturday.

The push came after Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office in September, identified measures such as visa waivers for tourists as “quick wins” to stimulate Thailand’s economy, which he has repeatedly said is in a “crisis.” Thailand, which has seen an average growth short of 2% in the past decade in a region where a pace upwards of 4% is the norm, has pushed promotional campaigns to extend holidaymakers’ stay and year-round festivals to boost the number of foreign tourists.

Srettha previously  bemoaned  that Thailand had missed out on Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour, which made Singapore its  only stop  in Southeast Asia due to an exclusive arrangement with the neighboring country.

Tycoon-turned-politician Srettha has called Singapore’s move “smart” and said Thailand should seek to emulate such strategies to bring in tourists and boost its economy.

Thailand’s vital tourism industry accounts for 12% of the country’s gross domestic product. This year, the country  aims  to welcome 35 to 40 million foreign tourists, edging near a pre-pandemic record of 40 million visitors.
