This wonderful book follows a little girl who draws a magic door on her bedroom wall. Through it she escapes into a world where wonder, adventure and danger abound. Red marker pen in hand, she creates a boat, a balloon and a flying carpet which carry her on a spectacular journey … who knows where?

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

  • Use the title as the starting point for your own story. What might your own story about a ‘Journey’ include?
  • Look at the illustrations on the front, back and inside covers. Discuss what you think it might be about.
  • As you explore the illustrations in the book, try to find features that might be clues about the rest of the story.
  • Think of your own captions, speech / thought bubbles to add to the illustrations.
  • Make a word bank that includes words you could use to describe the people, places and events in the story.
  • Create a narrative version of the story. Could you turn it into a playscript?
  • Imagine that you had a pen that could be used to draw (and create) real objects. What would you draw? Could you write a new story based on this concept?
  • Write a character profile about the girl. What do you know about her? How would you describe her?
  • Retell the story from the girl’s point of view. Could you write a diary entry for her?
  • Write a prequel to this story that explains where the magic red pen came from. Who owned it before the girl? Who made it? Why does it have special powers?
  • Choose one of the settings in the story. How would you describe it?
  • Write a newspaper article about a girl who goes missing through a magical doorway in her bedroom.
  • Write a newspaper article about the girl who arrived in the city in a red boat.
  • Stop reading when the girl first arrives at the city. Should she go in? Why (not)? Share your thoughts with others and vote on what you think should happen next.
  • Why is the purple bird being hunted by the people?

  • Create a game in which a girl has to rescue a special purple bird.
  • Create a video that shows the illustrations in the book and is accompanied by your own narration / speech.
  • Watch this trailer for the book. Could you use multimedia software to create your own book trailer?

Design Technology

  • Create a model of one of the airships in the illustrations.
  • Imagine that you could draw a magic door from your classroom / bedroom wall into another world. Draw the view to the other side.
  • Create a picture that shows what the girl can see at your favourite point in the story.
  • Could you create an additional page (or group of pages) that tells a different part of the story? Could you draw a sequel to this book?
  • The illustrations were created using watercolour paints. Can you try to paint using a similar style?
  • Look at the different characters in the story. Can you create your own illustrations of them? This video has some tips from the author / illustrator:

  • Compose a theme tune to accompany a movie version of this story.
  • Draw a map of the city the girl encounters.
  • How many different forms of transport can you find in the book?
  • Imagine that you had a flying carpet. Where would you travel to? Why?
  • Plan your own ‘Journey’. Where will you go? How will you get there? What will you need to take?
  • Find out about famous journeys, explorers and expeditions from history.

Religious education

  • Why do people sometimes go on special journeys as part of their religion? Can you find out more about these?
  • Look at the body language of the characters in the illustrations. What might they be thinking / feeling? How can you tell?

Journey by Aaron Becker – KS2 cross-curricular planning

Carey Fluker Hunt

Three-page PDF featuring KS2 cross-curricular activity ideas

Art & Design , English

If a picture paints a thousand words, it’s easy to see why picture book Journey by Aaron Becker tells such a fantastical, epic tale.

With so much to look at and think about, Journey by Aaron Becker is a book that you can read on many levels. As Becker says in a mini-documentary on his website : “Each page has to answer questions from the previous spread as well as introducing whatever might be happening next”.

Taken as a whole, his illustrations provide a rich and memorable reading experience that will inspire much in the way of thinking and talking , and make a wonderful starting point for creative projects of all kinds.

What is Journey by Aaron Becker about?

A lonely girl draws a door on her bedroom wall and steps into another world. Aided by her magic crayon she travels through this strange, new place. Shifting landscapes give way to a remarkable city where there’s a villain to confront, and the girl needs all her courage and resourcefulness in order to survive.

She does, of course, and goes home with the greatest treasure of all – a friend.

In this glorious – and completely wordless – picture book, the timeless appeal of Aaron Becker’s story is more than matched by his illustrations, which crackle with so much expressive energy that readers barely notice the absence of text.

Becker worked as a designer in the film industry before creating Journey. His experience is evident in the book’s grandly conceived, yet intimately detailed, spreads.

Executed in watercolour, a demanding medium that requires a delicate balance between control and ‘letting go’, the resulting artwork is gently memorable yet utterly compelling.

Carey Fluker Hunt is Creative Projects Manager at Seven Stories , the National Centre for Children’s Books in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a two-week Whole School Writing Root for Journey by Aaron Becker. The resource has been designed to be used by an entire school to foster a shared learning experience around one text and to engender written outcomes – some with the same audiences and purposes, some not – that are ‘at pitch’ for each phase/stage but that will also aid revision, catch-up and extension where (and in whichever form) needed. We have planned for activities at 3 stages: Reception with Year 1; Year 2 with Year 3 and then Year 4 to Year 6. The resource is intended to form the basis upon which schools and teachers can create and shape a sequence of learning that will work within their context.  The sessions could be added to with art activities and through further learning in PSHE, Science, Geography and History.

This 7-lesson narrative scheme is based on the wonderful wordless picture book, 'Journey' by Aaron Becker. Children will be inspired by the beautiful pictures and engaging storyline to write their own tales of adventure involving the characters in the book!

#TheCompleteSeries7lessons

In the first two lessons, children will become familiar with the story, and will ask and answer questions about the events and characters. The focus is then placed on different aspects that will make their writing more engaging for the reader, including the 'show, don't tell' technique, descriptive language, and direct speech. Using this knowledge and understanding, children then plan and write their own adventure story inspired by the events in 'Journey'.

Please be aware that, for copyright purposes, we are unable to provide any of the images from the book for this scheme of work.

#Lesson1BecomingFamiliarwiththeStory

After predicting what the book might be about from the title and front cover, as a class you will look at the book together, discussing how the story is told in pictures only.

In their independent activities, children use the provided story strips to order the story. Alternatively, they are encouraged to retell the story orally in groups or as a class, using as much detail as they can.

This Journey by Aaron Becker lesson plan pack includes an engaging slide show, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson Plan
  • Activity ideas
  • Story Strips

#Lesson2ShowingUnderstandingofEvents

As a class, children explore the book again, and this time are encouraged to think about the characters, the setting and how the story develops.

In groups or pairs, children discuss a range of given comprehension questions, justifying their answers and explaining their opinions. In the alternative activity provided, children devise their own questions to ask each other about a particular page from the book.

A detailed plan, a set of slides for the teaching input, and differentiated, printable resources are all included in this Journey by Aaron Becker lesson plan pack.

  • Discussion Sheets
  • Challenge Cards

#Lesson3TheShowdontTellTechnique

In this lesson, children are introduced to and explore the 'show, don't tell' technique for conveying characters' emotions.

Children first explore and discuss the different facial expressions and body language for a range of different emotions, then use this knowledge and understanding to write their own 'show, don't tell' sentences for different scenarios and emotions in 'Journey'.

This lesson pack comes with a detailed plan, differentiated activity ideas, PDF lesson slides as well as all the printable resources to support your class as they work independently.

  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Emotions to Actions Help Sheet
  • Emotion Cards

#Lesson4DescriptiveLanguage

In this lesson, children first recap on their knowledge of descriptive language, and the types of words can can be used to add small details to descriptions that help the reader to visualise events more clearly.

After working as a class to improve the descriptive detail of some simple given sentences, children are then tasked with writing an audio description for one of the double-page spreads in the book, aimed at someone who cannot see the pictures.

#Lesson5PunctuatingDirectSpeech

As a class, children recap on the correct use of inverted commas when using direct speech, as well as where to position closing punctuation and reporting clauses.

In their independent activities, children will apply this knowledge by adding the correct punctuation to given direct speech sentences, as well as writing their own based on imagined conversations between the characters in 'Journey'.

A detailed plan, a set of informative slides and differentiated, printable resources are all included in this Journey by Aaron Becker lesson plan pack.

  • Direct Speech Help Sheet
  • Conversation Challenge Sheet

#Lesson6PlanningaStory

In this lesson, children revisit 'Journey' and focus on what they know about the character of the boy, and the purple bird. Children use their skills of deduction and inference to imagine what might have happened to the boy between the first double-page spread of the book, and the last.

Children are then challenged to plan a narrative for the boy's story. In the Fancy Something Different? option, children are tasked with planning a sequel to 'Journey', with the boy and girl having an adventure together using their magic crayons.

Everything you need is included in this Journey by Aaron Becker lesson plan pack - engaging and informative slides, differentiated activity ideas, printable resources, and of course, a detailed plan!

  • Planning Sheets
  • Challenge Sheet

#Lesson7WritingaStory

In this final lesson, children first look at the useful technique of composing and orally rehearsing their sentences before they write them.

After looking at examples of this technique, and exploring how it works as a class, children are challenged to put it into practice when writing their story inspired by events in 'Journey'.

Journey: An Active Kids Yoga Lesson Plan for Storytelling

Journey story yoga lesson plan for kids

Here’s a way to get kids to move and be active while reading and being creative: a kids yoga lesson plan based on the book Journey

Movement and literacy. Active kids and a love of reading. Yoga and storytelling.

The first year I started teaching yoga at a K-4 Charter school that is focused on getting kids to and through college, I didn’t know how to join these things together.

(I’ve gotten quite good at joining yoga and academics since then, though!)

I would read kids a book and  we would try to act it out .

We’d tell a story together as a class with yoga cards and poses. We would read books with yoga poses built in.

All of these things were great ways to give my kiddos some movement and exposure to literacy at the same time.

We found ways to be active and do some movement games and then read part of a book.

But I really hit the yoga lesson plan jackpot when I discovered this amazing book called Journey .

Journey , by aaron becker, is a wordless book ..

journey aaron becker lesson ideas

It has pictures depicting a young girl’s imaginative afternoon in which she journeys into a world of her creation.  She has a nice red crayon that works a bit like Harold’s purple crayon .

Throughout her journey, she draws things that help her get further through the world and accomplish a goal of saving a beautiful bird, which she befriends.

After glancing through the book, I immediately knew that it would work really well as a yoga lesson plan with a good sequence of poses.

I made up a PowerPoint of the yoga poses, and I created a lesson plan to teach my kids the sequence while going through the story.

journey yoga lesson plan for kids, yoga with your child, kids yoga, bow pose for kids, back stretches, backbend, yoga poses for kids

(The next two books by Aaron Becker, Quest and Return, are just as beautiful .)

You can grab the whole trio of books here . They also lend themselves nicely to yoga lesson plans and sequences .

It was fun to plan out the sequence ahead of time, but some kids are completely able to come up with poses as they read or tell the story to themselves .  That is an excellent yoga lesson plan and storytelling goal!

Yoga and Storytelling is a great way to teach kids yoga

This format of teaching, reading books, and doing poses to go along with the story, was one that worked really well for me a couple of years. I found lots of books that were adaptable to teaching yoga lesson plans.

Here are some beautiful kids yoga cards with lots of diverse students. The main set of poses is here, called a Yoga Flow .

Here is a Journey Yoga Lesson Plan with …

  • 24 full-sized yoga poses and descriptions
  • Greeting and Introduction
  • Breathing activity
  • Opening questions
  • Fully scripted story to go with the book, Journey
  • Pose images and descriptions
  • Guided meditation
  • Writing and drawing prompts
  • Teaching tips

Here’s the outline of the kids yoga lesson plan I taught using the book, Journey

Journey yoga lesson plan and sequence of poses, opening question and warm up:.

If you had a magic crayon that could draw you anything, what would you make?

Mime drawing that item, if it’s really big.   Pretend you have a crayon and draw some big things to help you get from place to place.

Introduction to the story

The child in the story we are going to read has this wonderful crayon that opens up a door into a new world. She goes on a Journey into the world and finds some incredible things to do and explore.  Let’s read it together and find out what she does.

Do the poses with me, staying in your own space.

A little girl is feeling very bored one day in the summer.  All of her family members are busy doing things and no one will play with her.

Scooter (pretend to ride the scooter)

She doesn’t want to ride her scooter

Kite (crescent moon pose)

It’s not nice enough out to play with her kite.

Ball (rock and roll on your back)

No one wants to throw the ball around

Door (seated forward fold arms lift to open the door)

So, she picks up her magic crayon and draws a door in the wall, opens it up, and walks through!

seated forward fold, owl pose for my many colored days yoga lesson plan

Forest (tree pose)

She comes to a beautiful forest lined with fairy lights and walks along the path through the trees.

River (upward plank pose)

At the end of the path, she comes to a gently flowing river. Wondering what the river leads to, she decides to follow it.

Boat (boat)

She draws herself a boat to ride in up the river.  As she rides the boat along, she comes to a big walled city, almost like a castle. So, she rides further, looking at all the buildings and waving at the people as they pass by.

journey aaron becker lesson ideas

Waterfall (standing baby backbend to forward fold)

All of a sudden the boat goes over the edge of a big waterfall!

Hot air balloon (dancer pose)

Luckily, the girl is a quick thinker and starts to draw, and draw and finally makes herself a nice safe hot air balloon to ride in. She floats down for a while, and notices something happening below her.

Bird (airplane pose)

A big beautiful bird is soaring below her. And it’s purple! It seems kind of like the red things that she has been drawing, but a different color.

kid doing warrior three pose, yoga pose for kids, yoga at home with kids

The bird is captured (woodchopper action to mime catching bird)

She continues to watch the bird, and is startled when it is suddenly captured in a big net!

Bird in a cage (Eagle pose)

She watches sadly as the bird is put in a big cage, on display for the ones who caught it.

Girl saves bird (running in place)

So, she decides to act. Her hot air balloon lands, and she makes a break for it, running to grab the cage, and just in time she throws open the doors and frees the bird!

The girl is captured (sit with knees up and head down)

Unfortunately, though the bird has been saved, the guards capture the girl.  They put her in a giant cage and throw away her crayon! She is caught! She sits, devastated, locked in the cage looking out at the huge world beneath her.

Bird brings the crayon (jump for joy)

All of a sudden, soaring up from beneath her, the beautiful bird returns to her, bringing her magic crayon with. She is saved!

Magic carpet (locust pose)

The girl and the bird devise a plan, and the girl slowly crafts a large rectangle that turns into a… magic carpet!  She soars out of the cage and is free to fly across the countryside with the bird at her side.

Stars (sanding star pose)

They fly along for a while, day turns to night and the stars start to come out.

kids yoga lesson plan, breathing exercises for kids, star pose for kids yoga, mindfulness, breath

Door (seated forward fold)

In the distance, they spot another door and fly down towards it. They open it up and step through.  Finally, they are home! Back in the little girl’s real world.  And who does the bird belong to?

The girl meets the owner of the bird, another young child with a crayon of his own as well.  Together they decide to create something new, something with one circle, then two…

(Draw to big circles with your arms)

Bicycle (reclining bicycle legs).

And together, they made a bicycle! They can continue on to new journeys and worlds together. Two crayons are better than one 🙂

Closing (savasana, or resting pose)

As you lie here, I want you to imagine what it might be that the two children see together on their next journey .

First, calm your body with a deep breath in through your tummy, and out through your nose .  Put your hands on your tummy, and imagine your breathing helps you ride the bike nice and slow.

Now, close your eyes and think in your brain about where YOU would go if you were on that bicycle.  What would you see?  What would you hear? Would you smell anything new? How would it feel to be riding freely to someplace new?

Think about all those things as you lay still. Imagine those pictures in your brain. Take another deep breath in and out through your tummy. Slowly sit back up and be ready to raise your hand if you would like to share where it is you would go.

So there you have a yoga lesson plan to go with the beautiful book Journey, by Aaron Becker .

Don’t forget to check out the full lesson plan with all the images, meditations, activities, and printables here!

I have done this yoga sequence and lesson plan with Kindergarten through 6th grade, and I have built other lessons on to the end to make a nice unit on creating stories with yoga .

Let me know if you’d like ideas on how to create that plan for kiddos that you work with!

Here is another storytelling yoga lesson plan that I created with all of the pose images and a cute song! Check it out:

This is a 1 day DIFFERENTIATED English plan/ TEACHING POWERPOINT complete with success criteria’s for the task and differentiated scaffolds for the book: JOURNEY by Aaron Becker

The learning objective is making a PREDICTION based on the clues given on the FRONT COVER. The teaching input and questions guide children to making predictions and to give reasons for their prediction, teaching them to pay attention to all the clues given on the front cover. The lesson also includes a grammar focus of nouns and adjectives.

The teaching powerpoint allows you to model answers on the different task pages. It includes a word bank to support EAL/SEN learners.

This lesson gives guidance on the best pedagogical approaches to use in the classroom such as AFL questions to gather what learners’ already know, the use of talk partners to share learning, allowing learners to choose their own task (this works wonders for their self esteem), differentiated tasks that are progressive from MILD to Spicy, Spicy to Hot and from HOT to Extra HOT and assessment at the end of the lesson against the success criteria to assess learning and inform future planning.

A 2014 Caldecott Honor Book

A lonely girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure, and danger abound. Red marker in hand, she creates a boat, a balloon, and a flying carpet that carry her on a spectacular journey toward an uncertain destiny. When she is captured by a sinister emperor, only an act of tremendous courage and kindness can set her free. Can it also lead her home and to her heart’s desire? With supple line, luminous color, and nimble flights of fancy, author-illustrator Aaron Becker launches an ordinary child on an extraordinary journey toward her greatest and most exciting adventure of all.
