Louvre at night

The Louvre Museum is a beautiful sight to behold at night.

The museum is located in the heart of Paris, France, and is one of the most visited museums in the world.

The Louvre takes on a magical twist when the sun goes down, as the lights illuminate the iconic pyramid and the surrounding buildings.

Grand Louvre, the World’s largest art museum, attracts more than 10 million visitors annually.

And since the Parisian Museum is open only six days a week, that’s more than 30,000 visitors every day.

Louvre Museum decided to stretch their evening hours into the night one day a week to cater to this demand.

The Louvre Museum at night is a beautiful and enchanting experience that visitors to Paris should not miss.

In this article, we share everything you must know before visiting the Louvre at night.

Some tourists say that visiting the Louvre at night is better than during the day.

If you have a choice, we recommend you check out the Louvre after dark.

We present five reasons visitors usually mention as an argument in favor of a night visit.

Louvre Museum is notorious for its long daytime lines.

When you buy your  Louvre entry tickets online , you can avoid standing for hours in the ticket line.

But you still have to go through the security check along with the other visitors.

Fewer tourists at night help you enter the Museum faster.

With fewer people crowding the masterpieces, you can spend more time with popular exhibits such as the Mona Lisa, The Winged Victory of Samothrace, Venus de Milo, etc.

Did you know that Mona Lisa at Louvre Museum gets the maximum number of visitors?

While the Louvre Pyramid does have its charm during the day, its allure becomes manifold at night.

This modern structure stands amid the historic buildings and seems to cast a magic spell on every visitor.

The glass pyramid lights up at sunset, which means the timing varies.

During winter and autumn, when nightfall is earlier in the day, the pyramid lights up early, allowing the visitors to enjoy the splendor for a longer duration.

Before visiting, find out everything about Glass Pyramid at Louvre Museum .

After dark, as soon as the pyramid lights up, the Museum’s Courtyard (also known as Cour Napoleon) becomes an exciting hangout for locals and tourists.

We recommend you finish your Museum visit and then hang around for as long as you want.

Since the Louvre Courtyard isn’t closed, tourists and locals continue to enjoy the surroundings until late in the night.

The Louvre Courtyard with the pyramid in the background is also a great photo opportunity.

Many think that the Louvre Museum uses natural light (because of all the glass pyramids!) during the day, and the artificial lights used at night diminished the art-viewing experience.

This is not true.

Very few Louvre galleries have natural lighting during the daytime.

During your night visit to the Louvre, you enjoy the stunning paintings, sculptures, and other exhibits as well as you would during the day.

Visiting the Grand Louvre at night leaves you with your whole day for other Parisian activities.

You can either have a hectic afternoon, get to your hotel, rest for a while, and then land up at the Louvre.

Or you can check out a few attractions near the Louvre, re-energize yourself at a nearby restaurant, and reach Louvre for your dose of world-class art.

Louvre night hours

The Louvre Museum is open from 9 am to 6 pm every day but remains closed on Tuesdays.

However, on Fridays, the museum stays open till 9.45 pm.

This means on Fridays, you get extra time to explore the Louvre at night.

Louvre Museum’s Friday night hours are till 9.45 pm.

If you are an art enthusiast and would love to take your time with every masterpiece at the art museum, it is best to visit on a Friday night.

Sometimes, Friday nights gets a bit crowded because of the free entry.

Louvre Friday night free

Fridays are also known as Louvre free nights.

Every Friday from 6 pm to 9.45 pm, entry to the Louvre Museum is free for all visitors under 26.

If you qualify for the above condition, you don’t need to buy tickets for Friday night admission to the Louvre.

Just reach the Pyramid entrance with a valid photo ID, and you will be allowed to enter.

Others require The Louvre entry ticket .

Visitors with free entry all the time

For the below-given visitors, admission to the Louvre is ALWAYS free, which means all night visits are also free:

  • Visitors under the age of 18
  • 18 to 25 years old residents of the European Economic Area (EU, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein)
  • Teachers of art, art history, and the applied arts
  • Visitors with disabilities and the person accompanying them

On the first Saturday of the month, Louvre Museum closes at 9.45 pm, and on the rest of the Saturdays, it closes at 6 pm.

Louvre entry is free for all visitors on the first Saturday of each month from 6 pm to 9.45 pm.

Unlike the free entry on Fridays, the Louvre free entry on Saturdays doesn’t have an age limit. Everybody can walk in for free.

*The same applies to Bastille Day as well, which falls on 14 July.

The large glass pyramid was built as part of the 1989 re-design of the Louvre Museum and now serves as the main entrance.

Along with Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, it is one of Paris’ most recognizable landmarks.

The glass pyramid lights up at sunset, becoming a luminous icon welcoming all art lovers.

After dark, people hang around the glass structure or take photographs of the lit pyramid from different angles.

Tourists who have spent time hanging around the Louvre Pyramid at night say it is both mentally stimulating and romantic at the same time.

Here are some photographs of the Louvre pyramid at night:

The lights from the Louvre at night almost make it look like a different attraction.

The Louvre has three entrances – the Pyramid entrance, the Carrousel entrance, and the Porte de Richelieu entrance.

1. Louvre Pyramid entrance

The glass Pyramid is the main entrance to Louvre in Paris and is known as the Le Pyramide entrance.

At night this Louvre Museum entrance offers a much better experience than the others.

Get Directions

2. Louvre Carrousel entrance

The Carrousel du Louvre is an underground shopping complex situated next to The Louvre.

Since this entrance is next to the Inverted Pyramid, it is also known as the ‘inverted Pyramid entrance.’

If you are reaching by Metro, it is best to enter the Museum by the Louvre Carrousel entrance.

In such a case, once you have explored the Louvre Museum’s exhibits, you can exit by the Pyramid entrance and spend time in Louvre’s Courtyard.

Tip:  On Line 1 and 7, the Metro stop for Louvre Museum is ‘Palais Royale-Musee du Louvre’

3. Porte De Richelieu entrance

This Louvre entrance is right in front of the Glass Pyramid.

To spot the Richelieu passage, look for Louis the XIV’s Equestrian Statue, located in front of the Louvre pyramid.

The best entrance for a night visit

During your Louvre night visit, you can use any of these three entrances.

However, our favorite is the glass pyramid entrance, and our second preference is for the Richelieu entrance.

If you arrive by a Metro, get in through the Louvre Carrousel entrance but get out through the glass Pyramid.

Some tourists visit Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum on the same day. If you also plan to do the same, follow the links for directions: –  From Eiffel Tower to the Louvre Museum –  From Louvre Museum to Eiffel Tower

There are no specific Louvre Museum night tickets.

Instead, you need to plan your visit according to the sunset times in Paris.

Because of the geographical location of France, sunset in Paris varies a lot all through the year.

Sunset at Louvre Museum

Half an hour from when the sunset begins, the city gets dark, and then lights start coming up.

*The sunset times provided in the table are approximated.

If you plan to visit on Friday, you can book the  regular Louvre Museum ticket  for time slots after 6 pm – the Museum is open till 9.45 pm.

If the lights aren’t on when you enter the Museum, they would definitely be on by the time you get out from the Louvre Pyramid exit.

By the time it is dark, the pyramid and the Louvre buildings are shimmering in golden light.

On other days, the art museum closes at 6 pm, which means you must enter by at least 4 pm to give yourself two hours of exploration.

If you are in Paris between November to February, you will see the pyramid all lit up when you exit the art museum.

But on other months, since the sunset is later, you may have to head out for some dinner and then get back to the Louvre Courtyard for stunning views.

During this 2-hour tour, an art expert takes you around Louvre masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, etc.

After that, you can hang around inside the Museum or outside for as long as you want.

This private tour is limited to six participants.

Ticket Price

Adult ticket (18+ years): €95 Child ticket (11 to 17 years): €95

If you prefer the same Louvre night tour but want the art expert to be with you for two hours,  check this out .

If you are interested in Parisian wine, check out the below-given wine tours as well:

1. French Wine Tasting Class with Sommelier 2. Wine and Cheese Lunch in Paris

There are around 15 cafes, restaurants, and takeaway outlets in the Louvre, offering table service and takeaway food.

But only two of them remain open beyond 6 pm – Starbucks and The Comptoir du Louvre.

At Comptoir du Louvre you can get a selection of PAUL sandwiches, salads, and pastries, ideal for a light bite.

Both of the restaurants are under the Glass Pyramid.

Don’t have the budget or inclination to visit both the Parisian art galleries? Check out our  comparison of the Louvre Museum and Musee d’Orsay .

The White Night, also known as Nuit Blanche , is an annual event that gets Parisians and tourists excited.

During Nuit Blanche, a French expression for an all-nighter, many art museums are open till late at night.

Most of the Museums are free as well.

Nuit Blanche isn’t just about visiting art galleries. You also see various performances and art installations all around.

Nuit Blanche is usually held in October, just as the days start getting shorter. In 2023, it is on 3 June.

Public transportation stays open all night, helping the art patrons hop around the city and visit different museums.

On a Nuit Blanche, the locals are sure to outnumber the tourists.

People planning a night trip Louvre have lots of questions. We try to answer some of them here:

Yes, both the Glass Pyramid and the other Louvre buildings light up at sunset. The timings depend on the time of the sunset.

Louvre doesn’t allow visitors to wear swimsuits or be naked, barefoot, or bare-chested. If you are visiting in summer, the casual clothes you are comfortable in should be perfect. If you are visiting in winter, it is best to wear your heavy coats and jackets. The galleries are adequately heated, and most of the visitors won’t need warm clothes once inside. Visitors who don’t prefer carrying their winter wear bring a backpack to keep them in the locker space.

Unfortunately, there is no Louvre night and day ticket. However, if you book the regular  Louvre admission ticket  for time slots closer to the sunset, you can experience it day and night.

No, taking photographs of the beautiful glass pyramid of the Louvre at night is not illegal. That copyright rule applies to night photographs of the Eiffel Tower. But even then, nobody ever gets arrested for taking pictures of the Tower after dark.

Louvre and the area around Louvre is one of the most touristy spots of Paris and is as active during night time as it is during the day. Louvre is perfectly safe to visit at any time of the night.

The world's most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, sits in a room large enough to accommodate its many admirers. As a result, it is housed in the Salle des États, the Louvre's largest room, alongside other notable Venetian paintings like Veronese's The Wedding Feast at Cana. Mona Lisa's renowned enigmatic smile has fascinated audiences for centuries.

Louvre at Night

Daru Staircase

Hector Lefuel designed the Daru Staircase, one of the most recognizable aspects of the Louvre Museum, in the nineteenth century. A rare Greek statue of The Winged Triumph of Samothrace, the Goddess of victory, stands at the top of the stairs, the exact origin of which is unknown. This was also the spot where Beyonce and Jay-Z shot their famous hip-hop music video!

Louvre at Night

Greek Sculptures

The antiquities portion of the Louvre, which replaced the royal apartments, holds Greek sculpture treasures, including the well-known Venus de Milo. The collection of Greek sculptures at the Louvre grew over time. Louis XIV began the process in 1692 when he displayed several of his sculptures at the Salle des Cariatides.

Louvre at Night

Italian Paintings

During Louis XIV's reign, the first level of this massive gallery was used to display works of art by members of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The Grande Galerie now includes masterpieces by some of Italy's greatest painters, including Mantegna, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Arcimboldo, and Caravaggio, to name a few.

Louvre at Night

French Gallery

Dating back to the 13th century, this collection includes artworks created by Eugène Delacroix, Rousseau, Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, and Nicolas Poussin. The Death of Ophelia is one of the most famous ones, after the many portraits of French Kings.

Louvre at Night

Royal Apartments

Experience the lavish lifestyles of past Kings and Emperors in the magnificent Napoleon III Apartments. During the year 1861, this wing of the museum, which overlooks the Napoleon Courtyard, served as the official apartment of Napoleon. It is located on the first floor of the Richelieu Wing, and it has been preserved for almost 150 years! Portraits, vases, chandeliers, and other artifacts can be found in these royal apartments.

Louvre at Night

Crypt of the Sphinx

The Louvre's spectacular Great Sphinx of Tanis guards the entrance to a room brimming with Egyptian antiquities. The Sphinx is a half-human, half-animal creature with a lion's body and an Egyptian ruler's face. There are about 6000 works of art here, spanning over 5000 years of Egyptian history.

Louvre at Night

The Pyramid at the Louvre's main entrance is positioned at the center of its courtyard. This structure serves as a constant reminder of the value of the museum's Egyptian Antiquities collection. The main Pyramid is surrounded by three smaller pyramids, which serve as light shafts for the museum's exhibits. The inverted pyramid, which can be viewed from the underground Carrousel du Louvre entrance, is the fifth and final one. It was designed by M. Pei and completed in 1993.

Most visitors get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the Louvre only to end up overcome by the immensity of a museum that displays 35,000 artworks within 9 miles of corridors. Art Journey's solution is to go beyond the same famous masterpieces everyone sees and to venture into the quiet areas of the museum to discover the hidden treasures of the Louvre . And to further go around crowds, another solution is to visit during the evening on Friday nights , for the late opening of the Louvre until 9.30 pm. With a private evening visit, in summer, the visit ends with the sunset, in winter, it starts at night... In past visitors' own words :

The evening tour of the Louvre was a highlight of our first trip to Paris. Our guide was friendly, open to our requests, and incredibly knowledgeable about the art and the art history of the works we viewed. It was fun and enlightening talking with him. We learned so much in just 4 hours! I just wanted to thank you again for a wonderful, very informative tour through The Louvre - and at night! It was just incredible to feel as if we had that beautiful, enormous place all to ourselves - thank you for the evening tour recommendation!!

Avoid Crowds While Discovering The Louvre At Night

There is a lot more to the Louvre than the Venus de Milo , Victory of Samothrace, and the Mona Lisa . All the famous masterpieces are displayed in one wing of the Louvre. Yet, with three wings and three floors, entire sections of the Louvre are often nearly empty, particularly during the late opening . Our private evening visit will bring you to the quieter corners of the Louvre. Visiting late isn't the only way this private tour is unique. This is a genuine made-to-measure experience , where you are not restricted to a set list of famous artworks. What is on offer is the entire Louvre, all 35,000 artworks on display . Any section, any artwork -as long as the rooms are not closed- can be visited if requested in advance.

I want you to know that your private night tour of the Louvre was an absolute highlight, way beyond our expectations and my wife and daughters are constantly talking about that night. As novices to the world of art, you managed to bring the history and significance of the artists showcased in the Louvre to life in the most interesting and informative way. Your guided tour was a special experience for everyone in our family, from the first-timers in our group to those who had seen the Louvre several times before. You were able to make sure that each person found it to be an intimate and memorable experience. You even kept it interesting for the kids.

louvre evening tours

The Louvre evening tour - Friday Night only

Louvre by night tour.

The magic of the Louvre is all about the art.

There is nowhere in the world where so many undeniable masterpieces live side by side, waiting for you to walk in and share a moment with them.

Unfortunately, this also means huge crowds.

A new Art experience

Why we recommend this night tour of the louvre.

Like any great museum, the Louvre draws in an enormous amount of visitors. Millions flock to this gorgeous building every year, and it’s delightful that so many people want to come and see all that it has to offer.

But if you are looking for a different kind of Louvre experience, one without the crowds, where you can spend more time with each piece, where there are fewer people just trying to snag a picture of the Mona Lisa, you need to visit the Louvre at night.

That’s why we’ve created the Louvre by Night tour. It includes all the great information and views of the original Louvre tour, but it takes place in the evening.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to see things up close. No rush. No fighting your way through a sea of people. Only you, your guide, and the art.

If this sounds like just the tour for you, reach out to me.

We can begin figuring out your Louvre by Night tour and craft the ultimate Paris art experience for you!

The details

6.pm louvre tour in the evening.

The evening tour of the Louvre is an hour and a half tour led by a certified guide with deep knowledge of the art and the history behind it.

You will see masterpieces like the Venus de Milo and Winged Victory. And because you’ll have an expert on hand, you can discover the stories and secret mysteries surrounding the works and how they got to the Louvre.

You will also see the jewel collection of the French monarchy, the Grande Gallery, the works of Leonardo da Vinci (including, of course, the Mona Lisa — only now without the crush of a crowd), ancient statuary, rare artifacts from the dawn of civilization, and more.

Because the museum is much less busy in the evening, you’ll get far more time with each piece, able to revel in the splendor of the work rather than fight your way to the next exhibit.

What Makes the Louvre Different at Night

Paris, the City of Lights, was made to be enjoyed at night. This is as true for its incredible art museums as its historic streets filled with cafes.

When you visit the Louvre in the evening, there is a certain je ne sais quoi about the experience that you do not get during the day.

For one, the crowds are not only smaller, they are made up almost exclusively of art lovers. People seem to be much calmer, more respectful. Everyone is tuned into the art around them, focused on the details, whispering to their friends in wonder.

With that more relaxed pace and tone, you can often have much more informative talks with your guide. There is no din to shout over, no throng of people to move aside for. This allows a much more profound connection to the art and the things you can learn about it.

Candle light to the Light Bulb

In the past centuries, before inventing the light bulb, sculptures and paintings were shown to the viewers in their natural light : Sunlight or candles were the only sources of light.

But, as we can't keep the marble sculptures, fragile paintings outside under the rain and open to vandalism, the Louvre museum decided to preserve the most precious pieces inside.

The Grand Gallerie by day is almost an open air passage. The Louvre adapted the elements of the architecture of the Museum to shed more natural light on the paintings and the sculptures inside of it : The Louvre has many open windows and transparent roofs that lets the sun light in the gallery rooms as if we were walking outside.

The feeling of intimacy

The evening atmosphere of the Louvre by Night brings in a reverence for the art, a feeling of intimacy with the pieces. It can seem, at times, as if this fortress — built almost 1000 years ago — was made just for you.

You walk through its wide aisles, up its grand staircase, and it is as if you’ve landed the ultimate inheritance.

The sculptures almost speak and move in the later hours, allowed to fully express themselves without so many eyes on them.

And once your tour is finished, and the images of the night begin to settle and find a place in your memory, you exit out into Paris — lit up in that special way that only this city can do.

You can go forward, finding the next adventure in your great French escape, filled with the beauty of the world’s greatest art museum.

It is the perfect way to end a day in the city. Afterwards, you can grab a coffee or a glass of wine and explore the night, or seek out your bed, ready to dream of all the things you’ve seen.

the Louvre on a Friday night

Dreaming of art, is dreaming of art possible.

It is not surprising, after getting exposed to an - almost - infinite collection of colorful paintings, not only on the walls of the Louvre but also on its ceilings, to enjoy nice dreams of art and paintings.

It seems appropriate to pull these dreams from an artwork that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of a night tour: perhaps the best example would be Cupid and Psyche (1817) by François-Édouard Picot.

1817 - Cupid and Psyche - by François-Édouard Picot

The painting is enormous, 2.33 meters (7.6 feet) high by 2.91 meters (9.5 feet) wide.

At that scale, the sumptuous details and overall emotion of the painting completely overcomes us. Standing there, especially in the evening when we have the chance to really let our senses feast, it is as if we become part of the moment between these two characters from Classical mythology.

The Story of Cupid and Psyche

The story comes from a tale about Cupid, the god of desire, and Psyche, the goddess of the soul.

Psyche was born a mortal, but her beauty was beyond what any mortal had ever achieved. Her features even matched those of Venus herself.

See Aphrodite in our Women tour in the Louvre .

This enraged the goddess of love, who sent her son Cupid (Eros) to use his arrow — which had the power to make anyone fall in love with anyone else — to bind Psyche to the most wretched person in all the world.

Always the dutiful son, Cupid rushed to Psyche’s bed where she slept. But as he was piercing her with his arrow, he was suddenly overcome by her beauty. She awoke, startling him, and he pierced himself with the same arrow. From then on, they fell madly in love.

But because she was a mortal and an enemy of Venus, Cupid had to come up with some trickery. He built a palace for Psyche, and had a marriage arranged between them — but his wife could never know she was married to a god. So he would only visit at night and leave in the morning.

Psyche loved these visits, but yearned to know what her new husband looked like. One night, she leaned over his body with a lamp to see his face. As she did this, a drop of oil from the lamp landed on Cupid’s shoulder. He awoke and disappeared into the night.

Eventually, Psyche underwent many trials to win the respect of her mother-in-law and become a goddess herself. In time, Cupid and Psyche were able to be a married couple.

This delightful tale is most well known for scenes of Cupid and Psyche in their bed as the wife and mysterious husband. And a particularly beloved moment in these visitations, as the painter Picot depicts in this painting, is Cupid leaving in the morning before being discovered.

Picot (1786 - 1868) was a French painter whose luminous work expands our understanding of the mythic. He created many masterpieces in his career, like Léda (1832) and two ceiling murals in the Louvre.

His work in some way mirrors his contemporaries, like Jacques-Louis David. Both Picot and David have an impeccable sense of composition, capturing a moment in the story that combines action and the fundamental relationship between the characters.

David was much more a neoclassicist focused on ennobling his subjects through big, muscula events (consider his 1784 work Oath of the Horatii, also at the Louvre).

See the painting : Napoleon's coronation by David

For Picot, his greatest achievements came at much quieter points. His poignant images of introspection and tenderness still benefit from the strong sense of composition, but they are able to relax into a noble silence.

It is for this reason that he was the perfect painter to depict this scene of Cupid departing Psyche as dawn breaks over the land.

The Power of the Painting

When we visit the Louvre at night, we go to sleep with the most awe inspiring artwork dancing in our heads — including Cupid and Psyche. Upon waking, we might think it was all a dream, a fantasy that couldn’t be real.

The art in this museum seems too incredible, too powerful. Surely, it couldn’t be more than a reverie.

Cupid and Psyche is a meditation on many things, and here we have discovered yet one more. Night is a time when we transition into a world of imagination, our senses opened to see beyond an image and into the world inside it. This might be the most important reason why the Louvre is so special to visit at night — because we are ready to embrace it on a much more profound level.

Explore the Louvre Museum : night visit

Explore the Louvre Museum differently with a night visit.Nighttime outings at the Louvre. The conditions are perfect when you visit the Louvre in the evening. Each Friday ( as of July 1st,2022), the most famous of Parisian museums extends its hours of operation to 9:45 pm. It gives culture enthusiasts an opportunity to discover or rediscover their favorite galleries in a special atmosphere.

Suggested itinerary for an evening tour of the Louvre

Begin your visit with a refresher on the building's history, from its medieval remnants to its glass pyramids, which seem even all the more symbolic as they glint in the moonlight. Next, head to the gallery devoted to Greek art, where you will find two masterpieces known throughout the world: Winged Victory and the Venus de Milo . Continue exploring the Louvre by night in the Italian art gallery, where you can take your time and get close looks at the greatest works of Veronese and Da Vinci. After checking out famous 19th century French paintings (including Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People), admire the Italian sculptures of Canova and Michelangelo. The peace and quiet at night allow visitors to enjoy some of the most heavily trafficked galleries and to take in excellent perspectives of the museum.

The exhibition "Pharaoh of the Two Lands, the African epic of the kings of Napata" is open at night on Friday evenings until 10 pm on reservation until July 25th.

Why should you visit the Louvre Museum by night?

There are many reasons to take advantage of visiting the Louvre at night. The biggest reason is the low visitor volume. You are unlikely to have the galleries all to yourself, but it will be close! Another reason is the mystical and mysterious ambiance lent by the cover of night. At 6:00 pm, as most French museums are shutting their doors for the day, you are just embarking upon your discovery of one of Europe's most beautiful museums. The feeling of standing at the very heart of French culture at an unusual time of day contributes significantly to the positive experience. And, contrary to common wisdom, the artificial lighting during evening visits to the Louvre does not disturb your enjoyment in any way because, in reality, very few of the galleries have natural lighting – even in the middle of the day.

Practical details for evening visits to the Louvre

The Louvre Museum in Paris is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm every day except Tuesdays. On Fridays , the museum closes at 9:45 pm. Some galleries may start closing at 9:30 pm, so plan accordingly.

To make the most of your nighttime visit to the Louvre, we recommend mapping out your itinerary ahead of time and opting for Wednesday evening rather than Friday evening. Evening access to the Louvre costs €17 for adults and is free for persons under the age of 26. Tickets are valid only for the visit at the date and time indicated, any exit is final.

The Mystery Behind the Mona Lisa

Why is the Mona Lisa so famous? For starters, Mona Lisa’s expression has been often debated since its creation in the 16th century. Is she happy or sad or playful? Another intriguing thing about Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is that it's the highest insured work of art at a whopping $800 million. With fewer crowds in the afternoon, you should be able to snap a great picture of the Mona Lisa, then continue on with your tour to see more of the Louvre’s greatest pieces.

Sculptures of the Louvre

Although the Louvre houses thousands of paintings, it is also home to many famous statues. Two of the more famous statues include the Winged Victory of Samothrace and Venus de Milo . After exploring the statues, be sure to check out some of the museum’s great Greek and Roman antiquities.

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
