In and around purana qila, delhi tourist attractions.

Purana Qila in the heart of Delhi is a unique monument. Standing on the banks of Yamuna, it contains within it the mythology and the stories of the medieval era. And an excavation that is giving us insights into our past. Today, it has also become a favorite place for events and performances. The scattered monuments provide a romantic backdrop. The vast size provides the required space for large gatherings. And central location provides much-needed convenience.

Entrance to the Purana Qila, Delhi

Purana Qila – Places to visit in Delhi

The beginnings of Purana Qila lie in the mythology or the most ancient history known, as you would like to believe. This was the legendary city called Indraprastha founded by Pandavas in pre-historic times. This is where the famous assembly hall of Mahabharata created by the Maya was. Though there is no archeological evidence that supports this today. The only oral evidence is the fact that in the recent past, there was a village by the same name that used to inhabit this area.

The better-known part of the history of this fort is its construction by the Mughal emperor Humayun as a citadel for the city founded by him Din-a-Panah in 1538 CE. It was soon captured by Sher Shah Suri of the Sur dynasty and was renamed Shergarh. He also added some buildings to the fort during his short reign of 5 years from here. After Sher Shah, this fort remained neglected for some years. Before being re-captured by Humayun, who died within a year of capturing it. The last Hindu King Hemu ruled for about a month from this fort.

If you look at the pattern, no one actually ruled very long from this mighty fort. Anyone who captured this was killed very soon. This complex also served as a refugee camp for people displaced during the partition of the nation.

Interestingly the British-designed New Delhi is aligned along Purana Qila.

Indo-Islamic Architecture at Purana Qila, Delhi

3 Gates of Purana Qila Fort

There are 3 gates to this fort and a huge moat surrounds it, which is now used for boating. The Bara Darwaza , facing west and flanked by two huge bastions is the main entrance to the fort. The southern gate facing Humayun’s tomb is called by the same name Humayun Darwaza . The third gate facing North is interestingly called Talaqi Darwaza and is closed permanently owing to a story.

A story says that a king went out from this gate and this gate was to be opened only when he returned victoriously. Since he did not return this gate remains closed to this date. No one knows who the king was, but the only king who could have been being Sher Shah.

All these gateways are an example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Adorned with beautiful Rajputana style Chhatri’s that are decorated with blue inlay tiles.

Qila-e-Kohna mosque inside Purana Qila

Qila-e-Kohna Mosque

The Qila-e-Kohna mosque and Sher Mandal are two monuments that are well preserved within the Puran Qila complex. Qila-e-Kohna mosque designed as a Jami or Friday mosque is a beautiful example of Indo-Islamic architecture style. Built by Sher Shah Suri, this mosque with one dome and 5 gateways has extensive ornamentation, especially on its mihrabs. Walls have geometrical designs in red, black, and white marble done skillfully through inlay work.

The inside of the dome has a nice play of bright blue and yellow colors through glazed tiles. The pointed arches are horseshoe-shaped. The corner pillars at the back of the mosque if looked at in isolation would give a feeling of a Rajputana building in red sandstone with well-defined Chhajjas and beam and lintel arches.

A staircase from within the hall leads to the upper story that was meant for the females of the royal family. There is an interesting water body in the courtyard outside the mosque, which would have been used for Wuzu purposes when the mosque was practicing.

Sher Mandal or Humayun's Library

Sher Mandal

The Sher Mandal is an independently standing double-storeyed octagonal structure in red sandstone with a Chhatri on its top. This structure was built as a pleasure resort by Sher Shah to enjoy the weather and a good view. It is said that it was intended to be higher than this and was planned as an observatory. But could not be completed because of Sher Shah’s death. Later when Humayun took over, he converted it into a library . And one fine January morning he died on the stairs of this building as he tried rushing to the call to prayer from the mosque.

Narrow deep Step-well

All of the above is more or less commonly known. The not-so-well-known things are the ASI museum. It traces the history of Delhi through the articles discovered through various excavations in different parts of the Delhi region including this one. Here you can see the ornate doorways of ancient Jain temples from the Mehrauli area. Along with potteries of various eras discovered from the different layers of the Yamuna riverbed.

Stepwell & Hamam

Then there are two small but interesting excavated sites within the complex. One is a step well , which has many stories and is in an elongated rectangular form, with arches on one side. The steps seem to have been recently restored. The other is a Hamam or a bathing place. Which seems like a complex structure and has various places where water can flow from one place to another. I tried but could not make out the exact functioning of this Hamam.

Kunti Devi Temple

Kunti Devi Temple

Another interesting thing to see is the Kunti Devi temple, right in the middle of the complex. It is a small temple dedicated to Shiva. It is said that this is a temple from the time of the Pandavas . And probably belonged to their mother Kunti as it is still known by her name. It is a small temple with nothing much to note except its historical reference. There are two Bhairon temples just outside the Qila complex, adjoining its back wall.

Both these temples are said to have been set up by Pandavas when they had made their capital here. In fact, one of the temples has an idol of Bhima. One of the Pandava brothers is said to have carried Bhairon on his shoulders to this place, before building the temple.

Interestingly alcohol is the preferred prasad or offering for this deity. All the beggars gather around to receive the prasad for obvious reasons. The government has a tough time controlling the crowd here, especially on Sundays.

Bhairon Temple said to belong to the Pandava Period

You can walk around the Qila along its thick and seemingly impregnable walls. The walls also served as quarters for the soldiers and guards. Today these are home to ASI offices and the ASI museum. Most walls are in a dilapidated state. Those that are standing erect, have been restored by ASI not so long ago. The same is true for the two unused gateways. If possible, try and walk on the walls of the Qila to get a view from the top. And from here Delhi does seem a beautiful city.

Khairul Manzil Mosque - Mahamanga's Mosque

Khairul Manzil Mosque

Bang opposite Purana Qila, across the Mathura road, is Khairul Manzil mosque. The name literally means the best or most auspicious of the houses. The name is also a chronogram which means the letters when written in Persian refer to the year of its construction. Built-in 1561 CE, this mosque belonged to Maham Anga, the wet nurse of Akbar and Adham Khan ’s mother. It is a relatively plain mosque when compared to the Qila-i-Kohna mosque. But, has an impressive gateway and is fairly large in size. The glazed tile ornamentation on arches has more or less worn out. It also houses a madrasa or a school.

Sher Darwaza

Sher Darwaza or Lal Darwaza

Just ahead of Khairul Manzil mosque is the Sher Darwaza more often known as Lal Darwaza, built by Sher Shah Suri. This is an impressive gateway built in red sandstone, quartzite, and marble with the remains of a massive wall behind it. There are ruined shops on both sides of the pathway leading to the gateway. This was one of the gates to Delhi Sher Shahi. Its northern gate is near Feroze Shah Kotla was known as Khuni Darwaza.

Lake outside Purana Qila

To complete this walk you can also visit the Delhi  Zoo . It was inherently a part of this Qila and take a boat ride in the small lake outside Qila Walls. On a good weather day, you can enjoy the extensive gardens here.

There is something for everyone in this walk.

Really a very interesting story on purana quila. I had been staying in delhi since many years but I didnot know that. delhi is rich in heritage. There are many other hitorical places.

Anuradha Goyal, Really, your presentation on Purana Qila is so beautiful and well explained that I was wonderful with that. I visited India last winter there and spent 4 days in Delhi but I only saw Purana Qila outside, because I was travelling in a pre-programmed way, but next time in Delhi I will not loose to visit this very important ancient and full historic site. ADEMAR ARAUJO FROM BRAZIL

Anuradha, I cam across this Blog of yours just today while surfing around for something altogether different, the Street food of Delhi. Boy! Am I happy I stumbled in here! I like the way you have painstakingly researched and photographed the monuments and wrote about them with a passion and love rarely seen. Great work. keep it up.

Purana Qila Delhi Address : Mathura Rd, Pragati Maidan , New Delhi , Delhi , 110003 , India

Amidst the hustle bustle of ever-running Delhi city, stands the quiet, the serene Purana Qila. Also known as Old Fort, Purana Qila is one of the oldest forts of the city. It is believed that the majority of the present citadel of Purana Qila have been built by Humayun and Sher Shah Suri.

Purana Qila is not just a site of historical interest, but has become a popular picnic spot and lovers’ point for the present Delhi. It is often visited during the weekends or vacations. It is even more popular because of its location. Purana Qila is located on the Delhi-Mathura road and is close to the National Zoological Park . Although it is pretty old, the site is clearly not deserted because it is located in the heart of Delhi city.

Not just the amazing architecture, greenery around the Purana Qila and the lake that provides for boating are the major attractions for tourists visiting the place.

History of Purana Qila, Delhi

You may end up getting confused if you go through the history books for checking out the history of Purana Qila. Popular belief is that the qila was built on the historical site of Indraprastha by Humayun and Sher Shah Suri. However, it is difficult to discriminate between their works as it is more or less similar.

The common belief is that the walls and gates were built under the guidance of Humayun, while the buildings within the qila including the mosque and the Sher Mandal, have been built by Sher Shah Suri. In nutshell, it is believed that Humayun had rebuilt Indraprashtha and had named it Dinpanah, while Sher Shah improved the citadel.

Purana Qila is rectangular in shape and is spread over an area of 1.5 kilometers. The walls at the east and west side of the qila are the largest. Each wall of the qila is 0.33 meters thick and and is sealed by massive bastions at each end. Unlike the other forts of the city, the walls of Purana Qila are not provided with frequent bastions. It is only on the west wall that the frequency of bastions has been increased, with each bastion placed about 73 metres away from the other. This was probably because the qila was surrounded by water from the rest of the sides, leading to increased safety.

The bastioned ramparts of the Purana Qila are an epitome of strength. These massive structures are created of rubber masonry. Another amazing feature of the Purana Qila are the three gates that are a display of a happy blend of Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture.

The Northern gate, also known as Tallaqi Darwaza, is embellished of panels, showcasing a man engaged in a mortal combat with a lion. The Southern gate also has similar panels, where lion has been replaced by elephants. Of all the gates, Tallaqi Darwaza is the most famous, being almost 39 metres taller than the low lying ground.

The roof of the Tallaqi Darwaza is crowned by three chattris, supported by columns of red stones. These chattris were painted in white, giving a dazzling effect and striking appearance.

However, beyond the amazing beautiful walls of Purana Qila are the notable buildings placed inside the fort. The buildings, Sher Mandal and Qila-i-Kunha Masjid, have survived the onslaught of times and still stand tall.

Sher mandal, the double-storeyed octagonal tower is associated with the death of Humayun. While climbing the stairs of the building, Humayun slipped and lost his life. The Qila-i-Kunha masjid, however, was built around 1541 AD. It is known to be an important landmark in the history Indo-Islamic architecture. The beauty of the building speaks volumes of the architecture might that Sher Shah Suri had. It has been aptly described as one of the most perfect buildings of Sher Shah Suri by Fergusson.

The Qila-i-Kunha masjid has been inspired by Jamali Masjid, that was erected fifteen years earlier. However, Sher Shah’s creation marks some significant improvements. It is improved and amplified and showcases a well-balanced composition.

The Qila-i-Kunha masjid is not too large, as it is built in an area of 51X13.5 metres. It is 20.1 metres tall and is built of a variety of materials. The entrance arch of the masjid is made up of marble, while the spandrels of are made up of Red Stones with marbles studded on to them. The columns and plasters have been kept of white and black marbles. The unique blending of various colourful stones gives a fair sense of architectural style that Sher Shah Suri endorsed.

There is also a museum inside the Purana Qila that takes you back in time. The exhibits displayed in the museum include the real things that were used by the royals.

Purana Qila: The Grand Old Fort of Delhi

The Purana Qila is a timeless monument that stands on the South Eastern part of the present city of New Delhi. The landscape of Delhi is adorned by many majestic and quaint structures that have withstood the ravages of time. Colonial historians have drawn parallels between the seven hills of Rome and the seven cities of Delhi- built and rebuilt by conquerors who made this land their own.

The Cities of Delhi

The Lal Kot, a fortification wall built by Tomar Rajputs and renamed as Qila Rai Pithora by Prithviraj Chauhan in the 12th century, is believed to be one of the oldest standing structures of Delhi. Prithviraj is said to have lost it, soon after, to the invading forces of Muhammad of Ghor in 1192 CE. The Ghurid commander Aibek, who was left in charge of the dominions in Hindustan, developed the existing fort and built the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque and the Qutb Minar within its premises. This site is traditionally known as the first city of Delhi. Subsequently, along with the coming of other dynasties to power, more cities came up- Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Firozabad, Dinpanah and Shahjahanabad.

The Old Fort: Its Antiquity

The Purana Qila was built by the Mughal Emperor Humayun as a part of his new city of Dinpanah in the 16th century. One might wonder, as to what accords this particular fort the pride of place to be termed as “the Purana Qila” or “the Old Fort”, when there exist much older forts in Delhi. The answer to this question lies in an age known to us not so much through monuments and material culture, but through the kaleidoscopic world of myths and legends.

A strong local tradition believes that the area in which the Purana Qila stands today is the site of Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas of the great epic Mahabharata . It is for the same reason that the Purana Qila is often called the “Pandavon ka Qila''. Historians have sought the help of archaeology to verify this claim. Excavations at this site in 1954–55 and 1969 -1973, conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India and headed by BB Lal, revealed a few shards of pottery belonging to the Painted Grey Ware (PGW) variety, that historians trace to the Mahabharata period (1500-1000 BCE). They also revealed the existence of stratified layers belonging to 8 periods starting from the 4th century CE and continuing right up to the 19th century, confirming that the site had a long and unbroken chain of habitation for centuries. Apart from archaeology, textual sources such as the Ain-i-Akbari of Abul Fazal (16th century), mention that Humayun had built the fort at the site of Indraprastha-the ancient capital of the Pandavas. In fact, till 1913, there was in existence a village named Inderpat within the fort walls. The village was relocated after the British started building the modern capital of Delhi.

It is however the epic Mahabharata , that forms our main source of knowledge about Indraprastha. The site is originally known in the epic by the name of Khandavprastha- a distant and little-known tract of land on the western bank of the river Yamuna that was allotted to the Pandavas. The Aravallis were situated on the western side of this land and acted as a natural defensive barrier. The Pandavas are said to have converted this barren piece of land into a prosperous capital city with the more grandiloquent title “Indraprastha'' or the “City of Gods''.

Iravati Karve, in her legendary work Yuganta , a study of the Mahabharata , describes Mayasabha, the grand palace of Indraprastha, in the following manner, “Mayasabha was built very cunningly… Poor Duryodhana…bumped his head against walls, tucked up his garments only to find that he was walking on dry land. Finally, stepping on to what he thought was solid ground, he fell into a pool.” The fall is said to have induced peals of laughter from the onlookers. This insult coupled with the envy of the Kauravas after witnessing the splendour of Indraprastha is said to have been instrumental in leading to the Great Mahabharata War.

Dinpanah and Humayun’s Rise and “Fall”

This cataclysmic fall was followed, millennia later, by another one. The second Mughal emperor Humayun, the original builder of the Purana Qila, is said to have met an unexpected end within the premises of this fort. In fact, Humayun’s entire reign was of a very unstable nature. He ascended the throne in 1530, and after hardly 10 years of rule, he was displaced by Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan noble with a power base in Bengal and Bihar. Following the defeat, Humayun stayed as a refugee with the Safavid Empire of Persia for a few years. However, in 1555, he was able to regain his kingdom and throw the Surs out of power in Hindustan. But hardly a year after this, Humayun died. His tumultuous life had prompted the British archaeologist Stanley Lane Poole to famously write that the perpetually unfortunate Humayun, “tumbled through his life and tumbled out of it”.

Humayun started building the Purana Qila in 1533 CE as a part of his new fortified city named Din Panah or the “Sanctuary of Faith”. By 1534 CE, the walls, bastions, ramparts and gates of the citadel were almost complete. Although there were many forts present in Delhi by this time, Humayun, like most rulers, desired to mark his ascension with a new citadel and a city. The site must have held symbolic value for the Mughals as the shrine of Delhi’s most revered saint Nizamuddin Auliya was located close by. Later Humayun’s tomb would also be built not very far from the Purana Qila.

It is difficult to estimate how much of the Purana Qila was complete when Sher Shah took over in 1540 CE. The Suri interregnum of 15 years, despite its brevity, was significant in terms of the architectural development of the fort. Sher Shah renamed Din Panah as Sher Garh and built various important structures within it.

The Architecture

The Purana Qila fort complex, as it stands today, is a conglomerate of various structures that lie scattered over an area of more than 300 acres. It was surrounded by a wide moat that was linked to the river Yamuna- the waters of which once lapped against the eastern walls of the fort. It is believed that only a few monuments have survived out of the original structure. Some of these standing structures are believed to be Humayun’s work while others are attributed to Sher Shah.

The grandeur of the Purana Qila can be surmised from the three majestic gateways that stand till today. The Bada Darwaza, acts as the main and only point of entry to the fort today. It is a robust structure flanked by two massive bastions. While the gate is made of red sandstone with inlays of white and greyish-black marble, the bastions are constructed of stone and rubble. Multiple slits for arrows are visible both in the upper part of the gate and the bastions. The Humayun Darwaza is the southern entry to the fort complex. This gateway is divided into two storeys with a high arch in the middle. The third gateway, the Talaqi Darwaza or the Forbidden Gate, is located on the northern side of the complex. The name Talaqi is an intriguing one and has several interesting stories attached to it. One of the legends narrates the story of a queen who had vowed to keep the gate closed till her husband returned victorious from battle. The king, however, was killed and the gate is said to have remained shut ever since. The gateway has two entrances- upper and lower. While the upper and more ornamental one served as the main entrance, the lower one once opened at the level of the moat.

Qila-e-Kuhna Mosque

A prominent structure of the Purana Qila is the Qila-e-Kuhna mosque built by Sher Shah in 1542 CE. This mosque is an aesthetic structure that reflects a transitional stage between the architecture of the Lodhis and the Mughals. The architectural features encountered here appear in more pronounced forms in the monuments built by Emperor Akbar later on. The Qila-e-Kuhna is a rectangular domed structure built in grey quartzite with profuse use of red and yellow sandstone. The façade of the structure contains five arches. The central one or the Iwan is beautifully embellished with bands of calligraphy of verses from the Quran inscribed on it. The architectural and symbolic focal point of the mosque are the Mihrabs that face west and indicate the direction of prayer. The main Mihrab is an exquisite structure that contains intricate carved and inlay work in white and grey marble. Apart from the Mihrabs , the ceilings of the Qila-e-Kuhna are also worthy of attention. The ceiling of the central dome represents a fine example of the brilliant craftsmanship involved in covering a rectangular space with a circular dome. The four corners are filled by what are known as squinches that are exquisitely carved.

Throughout the mosque one can witness a harmonious blend- of Islamic architecture, that originated in west and central Asia, and indigenous Hindu stylistic motifs such as the kalash and the lotus. This points to the syncretic outlook of its builders which resulted in the evolution of a composite culture. As Giles Tillotson, a writer and a historian, expertly remarks, “The architecture of the deserts of central and west Asia—composed of brick and tile—is translated on India’s fertile plains into an architecture of richly carved stone, worked by Indian expert hands.”

Sher Mandal

Another prominent structure inside the Purana Qila is the Sher Mandal. This structure is believed to have been built by Sher Shah in around 1541 CE. After Humayun recaptured the throne, he is said to have converted this building into a library. The Sher Mandal is a compact octagonal structure built in red sandstone and sparingly decorated with white and black marble inlay. Emperor Humayun had a fatal fall on the steps of this very structure. It is said that Humayun, after he heard the call for prayer from the mosque, hurried down the steps of his library, got caught in the flares of his long robe, and fell.

Other structures

Close to the Sher Mandal lies a baoli or a stepwell. The baoli consists of a long flight of stairs, interrupted by landings, that lead to the water level. This structure is an interesting example of how water supply was managed during the medieval times. Another structure is the hammam or the bathhouse. Flights of narrow and steep steps lead to this closed underground chamber wherein one can still see the terracotta pipes and chutes that enabled the supply of water.

There are two museums housed inside the Purana Qila. The first exhibits artifacts related to the history of Delhi in general along with finds from the various excavations conducted at the Purana Qila. The second museum is unique and is Delhi’s only gallery that displays stolen and lost antiquities of Indian history retrieved by various law enforcement agencies.

Outlying Structures: Lal Darwaza and Khairul Manazil

Two other outlying structures that are often perceived as part of the Purana Qila are the Lal Darwaza and the Khairul Manazil. The Lal Darwaza or the Red Gate is an imposing gateway built of red sandstone and grey quartzite believed to be the southern entry to the city of Sher Garh. The Khairul Manazil was commissioned by Maham Anga, Akbar’s wet nurse, around 1561-62 CE to house a mosque and a madrassa . The structure though fairly simple still speaks of the power and influence that Maham Anga held in Akbar’s life.

After Humayun

After Humayun’s death, Akbar continued to rule from Din Panah until 1571 CE when he founded the new Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri in Agra. Delhi’s imperial significance then declined for some time until the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan, however, opted to build his own new capital city of Shahjahanabad (1639 CE) instead of reviving Din Panah.

The Old Fort and the Rise of Modern Delhi

The fate of the modern city of Delhi is not only historically and metaphorically, but also literally and physically aligned with the Purana Qila. Sir Edwin Lutyens, who built the modern imperial capital of Delhi (1912-1930) for the British, is said to have aligned the central vista, now called the Rajpath, with the Humayun Darwaza of the Purana Qila. During the second World War, the premises of the fort also served as an internment camp for Japanese civilians of British India. During the Partition of India in 1947, hundreds of refugees are said to have camped at the Purana Qila for several months.

It is believed that many secrets still lie buried in the depths of this timeless structure. It is somewhat poetic that after sundown the story of the seven cities of Delhi are replayed in the form of a sound and light show at the Purana Qila- centuries of triumphs, defeat, lost worlds and burgeoning cities- all caught in a play of shadows.

Purana Qila Delhi

Last Updated on March 17, 2023 by admin

Purana Qila, Delhi literally meaning Old Fort is one of the iconic landmarks of the city. With the presence of architecturally rich buildings, gardens, stepwell and mosque, Purana Qila is a must visit in Delhi.

Purana Qila, is one of the oldest forts in the city of Delhi and has been witness to the timeless history that unfolded decade after decade. This is exactly why visiting Purana Qila is one of the best things to do in Delhi .

Excavations done by Archeological Survey of India suggests that Purana Qila was built on the remains of the old city of Indraprastha of the times of Pandavas. Even today, Purana Qila stands all by itself giving us the brief history of time.

Table of Contents

PURANA QILA HISTORY

Purana Qila built by Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor which led to the planning of the city of Dinpanah, as a part of its new project of the capital city. Later, it was renamed as ‘Shergarh’ by SherShah Suri who took over the reins after defeating Humayun in the year 1540. He added few architectural structures to the fort which led to it being known as the ‘Sixth City of Delhi’.

The history of Purana Qila rewinds to the time of Pandavas. It is said that the excavations were identified as the Painted Grey Ware Culture which was used during the times of Mahabharata.

Built on the banks of the river Yamuna, Purana Qila was one of the major places of the new city project of Humayun, named Dinpanah. During the reign of SherShah Suri, two forts were constructed by him which remained incomplete.

Later, during World War, Purana Qila served as a refugee camp for the Japanese soldiers and during the India-Pakistan partition days, it was a stopover point for people crossing over.

PURANA QILA ARCHITECTURE

The architecture of Purana Qila mainly depicts mediaeval style of Mughal Architecture with huge fortifications. It is mainly beautified with blue stone work.

There are three entrances to Purana Qila. The main entrance or the gate is Bada Darwaza which means a Big Gate and is in use in today’s time as well.

The Second Gate is named Humayun Gate as from this gate, Humayun’s Tomb is visible.

The third gate is Talaqi Gate or the gate which is no longer in use or an abandoned one. These forts remind me of Lohagad Fort and Kumbhalgarh Fort .

All the gates here are two stories and are decked up with marble and blue stone work. At the top of the gates are small jharokhas which resemble the architecture of the forts in Rajasthan.

Qila-i-kuhna mosque.

Built by Sher Shah as a symbol of his royal aspirations, when he defeated Humayun, this mosque was meant for his personal use.

The architecture of this mosque is based on Indo-Islamic style and has a single dome with five gates or the openings, built mainly for the Friday prayers.

The walls of the mosque are done up beautifully with the red, black and white marble and depicts geometrical designs on them. The structure of the building resembles that of a Rajputana building owing to the mix of Indian and Islamic architecture. There are two octagonal turrets attached to the end of the wall at the end.

It is said that inside the mosque for the repairs during the ancient times, rice paste, jaggery, black lentils and lime were used. People in the ancient times were quite technologically advanced and also used eco-friendly products for use.

Sher Mandal

Sher Mandal was an octagonal, two-storied structure built from red sandstone and white marble, made especially for Sher Shah as his pleasure retreat; however after his passing away Humayun made it as his library who died here itself after having a fall from the stairs.

Sher Mandal has a small chhatri kind of a structure making it look like a cenotaph. Read more about the Cenotaphs of Orchha , Indore and Bhuj .

Khairul Manzil Mosque

Not in the Purana Qila complex but located just opposite to the entrance gate of Purana Qila is Khairul Mosque built for the wet nurse of Akbar whose name was Maham Anga. She was Adham Khan’s mother who was a General in Akbar’s army.

Its looks are quite simple as compared to the Qila-i-Kuhna mosque however it has beautiful ornamentation on the gates as it is also very large in size. It also houses a madrasa inside it.

Purana Qila Museum

Also known as the ASI Museum, it houses the excavations done in the general area of Delhi including that of Purana Qila.

The entrance door of the Museum looks like the doorways of the ancient Jain Temples located in the Mehrauli area of Delhi. Explore more about Jain Temples of Ranakpur and Mount Abu in Rajasthan.

The Museum also displays pottery from the various river beds of Yamuna gathered over the ages.

The museum is open on all days except Fridays and Public Holidays from morning 9 am to evening 5 pm.

Stepwell & Hammam

There are two small excavation sites within the Purana Qila complex. One of them is a stepwell. Though dry now, it gives us an idea about the prevailing water circulation systems during that time and the architecture used to construct them. It is a much smaller stepwell than the locally located Agrasen ki Baoli .

Located close by to the Step well in the Purana Qila complex is the Hammam or the Bath House of that time. It is a brick structure in a dilapidated state with three small rooms with the remains of terra cotta pipes. It had a unique provision of temperature controls for hot and cold water. It is interesting to note the system of flow of water depending upon the season. Click here to know more about such Hammams in the Fort of Mandu .

Kunti Devi Temple

One of the lesser known places to visit in Purana Qila is this temple which is understood to have connection with Kunti, mother of Pandavas. It is said that this temple dedicated to Shiva and Durga was built by her and hence the name. Other than the historical importance, this temple has nothing much to offer with regard to sightseeing.

Purana Qila Light & Sound Show

In the evening after the fort timings are over, the old fort comes alive with the light and sound show known as Ishq-e-Dilli. It is a beautiful multimedia extravaganza narrating the story of the yester years.

It starts from the times of Prithvi Raj Chauhan and ends at the times when the Delhi Metro was launched. It is a must watch show if you are a history buff. It is functional in both Hindi and English and starts with Hindi narration around 7:30 pm and continues till 8:30 pm. English one starts at 9 pm. However, as of today it is non-functional as it is being upgraded. The duration of this show is 60 minutes and no shows are played on Fridays.

Purana Qila Lake

Lake is located just outside of the Purana Qila which offers a beautiful and serene atmosphere in the chaos of the big city.

It has lovely fountains that are functional in the evening along with all lit up Purana Qila at the backdrop making it more beautiful and scenic.

Purana Qila boating offers a boat ride of 20 minutes at a charge of Rs. 100/-. This lake is quite deep and offers paddling boat options too. Purana Qila boating is an experience in itself.

Purana Qila

Top choice in Delhi

Shh, whisper it quietly: this place is better than the Red Fort. Delhi's 'Old Fort' isn't as magnificent in size and grandeur, but it's far more pleasant to explore, with tree-shaded landscaped gardens to relax in, crumbling ruins to climb over (and even under, in the case of the tunnels by the mosque) and no uptight guards with whistles telling you not to go here and there.

Ringed by a moat, part of which has been refilled with water, and accessed through the majestically imposing Bada Darwaza gateway, this 16th-century fort is where Mughal Emperor Humayun met his end in 1556, tumbling down the steps of the Sher Mandal , which he used as a library.

The fort had been built by Afghan ruler Sher Shah (1538–45), during his brief ascendancy over Humayun. It's well worth a visit, with its peaceful gardens studded with well-preserved ancient red-stone monuments, including the intricately patterned Qila-i-Kuhran Mosque (Mosque of Sher Shah), behind which are tunnels to explore and parts of the outer walls that can be climbed upon. There's also a small museum (closed on Fridays) set within the walls just inside Bada Darwaza gateway. The sound-and-light Ssow , which is performed in the evening beside the Humayuni Darwaza gateway, is also nonoperational on Fridays.

An elongated lake has been created from the fort's former moat , and in late afternoon is well worth wandering along as the sun lights up the towering walls above it, making for fabulous sunset photos. You'll have to buy an extra ₹20 'moat ticket' along with your main ticket in order to explore it.

Across busy Mathura Rd are more relics from the city of Shergarh, including the beautiful Khairul Manazil mosque , still used by local Muslims and a favoured haunt of flocks of pigeons.

Purana Qila Delhi

About Purana Qila Delhi

Purana Qila Delhi, also known as old fort, is believed to be the oldest fort of Delhi. It is believed that the majority portion of the current Purana Qila was constructed during the reign of Humayun and Sher Shah Suri. Located on the Mathura Road, Purana Qila is not only a historical site but has also become a popular picnic spot and lovers point. The amazing architecture, greenery around the Purana Qila and lake for boating are the major tourist attractions for the visitors visiting this place.

The Purana Qila has an Architectural site museum inside the fort. The museum shows things like old objects and pottery that were found during the excavations during the different periods of the museum. The museum also shows antiquities found in different parts of Delhi. Purana Qila also has a mosque called “Qila-i-Kuhna” inside it which shows the craftsmanship of early mughals.

History Of Purana Qila Delhi

It was initially believed that Purana Qila was built in 1533 by the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Humayun undertook the restoration work of the ancient site known as Indraprastha and gave it a new name, Dinpanah. The impressive walls and entrances of the Purana Qila were constructed under the supervision of Humayun in the early part of the 16th century.

However, some change occurred when Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun in 1540, he renamed it as Shergarh. During his 5 year rule, he introduced various structural additions to the complex of fort. The Mosque and Sher Mandal were constructed during this period by Sher Shah Suri. The present structure of Purana Qila is believed to have been constructed by Sher Shah Suri, unfortunately it remained unfinished after the death of Sher Shah Suri in 1545. After the death of Sher Shah, the fort went back to Humayun.

During the second world war, around 3000 Japanese people found shelter at this fort. During the Partition of India in 1947, the fort served as the refugee camp. Later, in the 1970’s, National School of Drama began using the fort for its plays like Tughlaq, Andha Yug and Sultan Razia. Purana Qila became a popular spot for cultural events and concerts with time.

The recent excavation of the fort in 2013-14 by Archaeological Survey of India indicates that the fort’s origin can be traced back to the 3rd century BC during the era of Pre-mauryan Empire. In earlier times, Archaeologist B B Lal oversaw excavation and gathered evidence that revealed similarities in the remains discovered at all the locations mentioned in the Mahabharata. During excavation, the Archaeological Survey of India also found various pieces like pottery and objects, which are now on display at the Archaeological Museum in Purana Qila.

Purana Qila, or the Old Fort, is one of the oldest forts in Delhi, India. It stands on the banks of the Yamuna river, overlooking the modern cityscape. Purana Qila has witnessed the rise and fall of many empires, from the Pandavas of Mahabharata to the Mughals and the British. It has also been the site of many legends, such as Humayun’s death, Sher Shah Suri’s victory, and the Delhi Zoo massacre. Purana Qila is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history, architecture, and culture of Delhi.

In this article, we will provide you with a comprehensive guide to Purana Qila, covering its history, architecture, attractions, entry fee, timings, and how to reach it. Whether you are a local or a tourist, you will find something new and exciting to discover at Purana Qila.

Purana Qila has a long and fascinating history that spans over three millennia. According to some historians, Purana Qila was built on the site of Indraprastha, the ancient capital of the Pandavas in Mahabharata. The fort was also mentioned by the Greek traveler Megasthenes in the 4th century BCE as one of the seven cities of Delhi.

The current structure of Purana Qila was built by the Mughal emperor Humayun in 1533 CE. He named it Dinpanah, meaning the refuge of faith. However, he lost it to Sher Shah Suri, the Afghan ruler who defeated him in 1540 CE. Sher Shah Suri renamed it Shergarh and added several new buildings and features to the fort.

Purana Qila changed hands several times between the Mughals and their rivals until it came under the control of the British in 1803 CE. The British used it as a military camp and a prison during the First War of Independence in 1857 CE. They also demolished some parts of the fort and built new structures on its premises.

After India’s independence in 1947 CE, Purana Qila was declared a national monument and opened to the public. It also witnessed a tragic event in 1976 CE when a man-eating tiger escaped from the Delhi Zoo and killed four people inside the fort before being shot dead.

Architecture

Purana Qila is an impressive example of medieval Indian architecture, combining elements of Hindu, Islamic, and Persian styles. The fort covers an area of about 1.5 km² and is surrounded by a massive wall that is 18 meters high and 2.4 km long. The wall has three gates: the Bara Darwaza (Big Gate), the Humayun Darwaza (Humayun’s Gate), and the Talaqi Darwaza (Forbidden Gate). The Bara Darwaza is the main entrance to the fort and faces west. It has a semi-circular arch and a domed pavilion on top. The Humayun Darwaza faces south and leads to Humayun’s tomb. The Talaqi Darwaza faces north and is believed to be haunted by ghosts.

Purana Qila, Delhi Overview

Stoically standing in the placid vicinity of Indraprastha, Purana Qila or the Old Fort is a masterpiece of the ancient glory and sterling architecture of the bygone Mughal Empire, and is one of the oldest forts in Delhi. Built on the banks of river Yamuna and spread over a vast 1.5 kms of area, the monument has tons of myths and legends of the medieval era attached to it. The most interesting of which suggests that the historical city of the Hindu religion- Indraprastha was built here, by Pandavas and the fort was the famous assembly hall, mentioned in the epic Mahabharat. It is also believed that the king Humayun met his end by tumbling down the steps of his library within the fort. Situated in the heart of the city and boasting of idyllic and a serene panorama, the fort radiates romantic vibes and is frequented by couples to enjoy some moments of solitude.

The gigantic citadel has three entrances and is surrounded by a moat, which is now used for boating. The lush green lawns graciously blessed with several shady trees are a haven if you are looking to spend some quiet time in the summers. The fortress constructed in traditional Mughal style and ornamented with rich embellishments attracts history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts day in and day out. In addition to this, Purana Qila hosts a light and sound show on “the seven cities of Delhi”, every evening, which is very popular among the tourists. The show highlights the evolution of New Delhi from Indraprastha.

Purana Qila Delhi Things To Know

Purana Qila , Delhi's oldest fort, is located on the banks of the Yamuna River. The fort was originally said to have been built in 1533 CE as part of the city of Din Panah by Mughal Emperor Humayun. But very soon, Sher Shah seized the city and dubbed it Shergarh; he built other structures to the complex and the fort along with its surrounds came to be known as the "sixth city of Delhi". Sher Shah died not long after, and the fort was returned to Humayun. It fell into the hands of the British after being held by various kings for extremely brief periods of time. Edwin Lutyens connected Rajpath to Purana Qila when New Delhi became the capital of British India in 1920.

Following independence, the fort was utilized as a refugee camp for refugees moving to Pakistan. The fort served as a refugee camp until 1948, when trains to Pakistan began running in October 1947.Later, in the 1970s, the National School of Drama utilized the fort to stage three plays: Tughlaq, Andha Yug, and Sultan Razia. It gradually became a popular location for cultural events and concerts.

Most Important 5 Fact about Puran Qila

  • Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan monarch, built this world-famous fort between 1538 and 1545 AD for his win and security.
  • Researchers have confirmed that a settlement called Indraprastha existed within the fort walls until 1913.
  • It has three main gates: Humayun Darwaja, Talaki Darwaza, and Bara Darwaza. These are all red sandstone doors.
  • A garden, a lake flanked by rows of trees and beautiful plants, and paddle-boating facilities are accessible near this fort.

It is believed that the structure was intended to be built higher and used as an observatory, but due to the unfortunate death of the lord, the construction was cancelled.

Purana Qila aka the Old Fort in Delhi is a fine example of history, heritage, and old-world charm – all of which come together to make it a one-of-its-kind attraction. As one of the oldest forts in Delhi, this Mughal-age edifice has remained witness to Delhi’s eventful history. Whether you are a history buff or not, you will find a lot inside this fort to keep you fascinated. Are you interested in exploring the glorious past of India’s national capital? Then make sure to visit this historical fort when you step out of your hotels in Delhi for a sightseeing tour.

Here’s a blog to help you out. We have compiled all the interesting details about this fort, including its history, architecture, timings, entry fee, and lesser-known facts, to make your visit a pleasant affair.

Purana Qila Information:

Purana qila: history.

It is widely believed that Emperor Humayun had built this fort and adorned it with colossal gateways back in the early part of the 16 th -century. Further, he laid the foundation for his new capital Din Panah at this location. When Sher Shah Suri took control of the structure after defeating Humayun in 1540, he renamed it as Shergarh. During his rule of five years, he made quite a few structural additions to the fort complex.

Over the years, the fort has been the location of many temporary settlements. At the time of the Second World War, this fort served as a camp to around 3000 Japanese people. After the country’s independence and partition, the fort provided shelter to several thousands of people crossing over to Pakistan from Delhi.

Purana Qila (Old Fort) Architecture

Purana Qila is a massive structure with walls rising up to a height of up to 18 meters. They cover 1.5 km in length. Shaped in a rectangular pattern, the fort is adorned with three arched entrances namely the Bara Darwaza (Big Gate), the Humayun Darwaza (South Gate), and the Talaqi Darwaza (Forbidden Gate). All three gates bear a similar feature – that is, they are double-storied structures built in sandstone and adorned with two gigantic semi-circular towers. The ornate detailing on the pavilions ( chhatris ) and balconies ( jharokhas ) of the fort gateways display traces of Rajasthani style. The Qila-i-Kunha Mosque situated within the fort exhibits five doorways and is designed in the Indo-Islamic architectural style.

Purana Qila: Today

Today, Purana Qila has lost much of its original grandeur. Though the exterior of the fort still exudes a grand look, many of the internal structures have lost out to the trails of time, nature, and man. Only a few of the internal structures have managed to remain intact. But that hasn’t deemed the popularity of the fort in any way. The fort still remains a big draw among the most popular tourist places in Delhi . The light and sound show held here in the evenings is also a major draw for visitors.

Things to See in the Purana Qila Complex

The Purana Qila fort complex has several attractions that make for an interesting visit. These include:

  • Qila-i-Kuna Mosque, a single-domed mosque built by Sher Shah Suri
  • Sher Mandal, an octagonal double-storied tower that served as Humayun’s personal library and observatory

Purana Qila Museum

  • The three magnificent entrance gateways
  • Kairul Manzil, a mosque constructed by Akbar’s foster mother (outlying monument, about 550 m)
  • Sher Shah Suri Gate or Lal Darpwaza, the southern entrance to Shergarh (outlying monument, about 350 m)

Purana Qila Light and Sound Show

Every evening, Purana Qila comes alive with a fascinating light and sound show. Considered to be among the best light and sound shows in India , this show is a visual spectacle that lets you learn a thing or two about the history, heritage, war, politics, and other aspects of Delhi, right from the Mughal period to the modern times. The show is rightly named Ishq-e-Dilli , which means Romancing Delhi.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Timings: Hindi – 7:30 pm to 8.30 pm English – 9.00 pm to 10.00 pm No shows on Fridays
  • Tickets: ₹ 100 for adults; ₹ 50 for students, senior citizens, differently abled people, and children (3 to 12 years)

Located next to the main entrance of the fort, Purana Qila Museum is a key attraction in the complex. The major exhibits of the museum include prehistoric tools dating back to the Mauryan, Gupta Sunga, Kushana, and Sultanate periods and several other objects recovered during archeological excavations. Remnants from the First War of Independence and several age-old manuscripts, textiles, pottery, etc. displayed here make it one of the must-visit museums in Delhi .

  • Timings: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed on Fridays and public holidays
  • Entry Fee: Free

Lesser Known Facts about Old Fort

  • It was at Sher Mandal, the library located within the fort, that Humayun had slipped from stairs and met his death.
  • Initially, Humayun was buried inside Purana Qila before his body was taken to Kalanaur in Punjab and finally laid to rest at the magnificent Humayun’s Tomb.
  • The ramparts of the fort were used as a theatre backdrop in the 1970s when three plays were staged by the National School of Drama.
  • Recent excavations have led to the theory that the fort was built on the same site where the Pandava kingdom of Indraprastha once existed.

Purana Qila, Delhi

About purana qila.

It is widely believed that Emperor Humayun built this fort and decorated it with large gateways in the early part of the sixteenth century. Similarly, he laid the foundation for his new capital Din Panah at this place. When Sher Shah Suri managed the structure after defeating Humayun in 1540, he named it Shergarh. At some point in his 5 year rule, he made some structural additions to the citadel complex.

Over the years, the fort has been around several temporary settlements. At the time of World War II, this fort served as a camp for about 3000 Jap humans. After America's independence and partition, the palace provided a safe haven for hundreds of humans moving from Delhi to Pakistan.

Architecture of Purana Qila

Today the old fort has lost its original grandeur. Still a grand view outside the fort, Purana Qila is a massive structure whose walls rise to a height of up to 18 metres. They cover 1.5 km in length. Shaped in a rectangular pattern, the fort is adorned with three arched gateways i.e., they are two-storey structures built in sandstone and adorned with two massive semi-circular towers.

The ornate details on the mandapas (chhatris) and balconies (jharokhas) of the entrances of the fort show traces of the Rajasthani style. The Qila-i-Cunha Mosque, located within the fort, has five doors and is designed in the Indo-Islamic architectural style.

Interesting facts about Purana Qila

  • Humayun had slipped from the stairs and died in Sher Mandal, the library located in the middle of the fort.
  • Initially, Humayun was buried within Purana Qila before his body was taken to Kalanaur in a geographical area and eventually laid to rest at the magnificent Humayun Place.
  • Once 3 plays were staged by the National College of Drama, the fort's ramparts were used as theater scenes in the seventies.
  • Recent excavations have a light emitting diode leading to the hypothesis that the fort was designed on a similar website where the Pandava kingdom of Indraprastha once existed.

Despite such a rich history, many facts and details have been lost over the passage of time. Not many people know the history of Delhi pre-Mughal. This place is the ideal place if you want to learn about the history of the city. The Gupta Dynasty, Maurya Dynasty are some of the oldest dynasties to rule the city and you can know all about them in this museum.
