6 Fantastic Boat Tours in Erie, PA

The best boat tours in Erie, PA

Thanks to the city’s location on Lake Erie, there are many great boat tours in Erie, PA and around Presque Isle State Park .

Whether you are looking for a relaxing and informative ride, a chance to learn more about sailing, or just the opportunity to enjoy the water, there’s a tour for everyone in this northwestern PA city.

Here are a few of my favorite boat rides and tours offered in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Lady Kate

The Lady Kate offers one of the best boat tours in Erie, PA

One of the most popular Presque Isle boat tours is offered aboard the Lady Kate.

The Lady Kate leaves from a dock on Misery Bay in Presque Isle State Park and goes on a 90-minute sightseeing cruise of Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie. The boat passes many points of interest before turning around at Presque Isle Lighthouse .

Along the way, guides offer narration about the history and natural beauty of the region.

If you only have time for one boat tour in Erie, PA, or are looking for one of the most relaxing options, this is definitely the cruise to sign up for.

Pontoon Boat Tours

Free pontoon boat tours in Presque Isle State Park

During the summer months, Presque Isle State Park offers free pontoon boat tours several times every day.

These 50-minute tours take visitors into the heart of the park and offer the chance to see the hard-to-reach interior of the park, which features many hidden coves and small ponds.

Since tours don’t have advanced registration, they fill up quickly, so make sure to arrive early to snag a spot for this great tour.

If you’d rather do something more active, you can also rent a kayak from the same area and explore the ponds on your own.

The Victorian Princess

The Victorian Princess on Presque Isle Bay in Erie PA

The Victorian Princess is an authentic paddle-wheel boat that offers hour-long tours of Presque Isle Bay.

Tours leave from a dock adjacent to Erie’s Bicentennial Tower and take visitors for a relaxing ride on the waters around the city. During the tour, visitors will learn about the history of the city and the sights that the boat is passing by.

For those that don’t like small boats, this is also the largest of all the boats offering tours of Erie’s waterways.

Fishing Charters

Fishing at Presque Isle State Park

While they might not be considered a boat tour, Erie’s fishing charters offer a great opportunity to not only see the city and Presque Isle from the water but also to experience some of the best fishing in Pennsylvania.

There are a variety of fishing charters available in the city depending on the type of fishing you are looking to do, the day of the week, and the duration.

Whether you catch many fish or none at all (I sadly struck out during my fishing trip), there’s a lot of fun to be had fishing the lake.

Scallywags

Scallywags Pirate Adventures in Erie PA

Join the crew of Erie’s only pirate ship and head out with Scallywags Pirate Adventures .

This adventure allows kids of all ages to become pirates for the day. During the sailing, there will be a search for treasure and even a water-cannon fight with another ship.

For those looking for a bit more adult entertainment, Scallywags also offers over-21 cruises that are sure to be a fun time.

While this might not be the most educational of Erie’s boat tours, it certainly is among the most fun.

The U.S. Brig Niagara

Boat tour's on Erie's Niagara, which is park at the Maritime Museum

If you don’t want to sit back and relax on your boat tour of Erie, consider climbing aboard The U.S. Brig Niagara for a four-hour sailing on Lake Erie.

The U.S. Brig Niagara is a replica of Commodore Perry’s ship from the famous Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812 and sails from a dock at the Erie Maritime Museum . The Niagara is also the official flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

What makes rides on the Niagara so unique is that customers are expected to help with the running of the ship as it sails around Lake Erie. This means that not only will you get to enjoy the lake, but you’ll also get a chance to fully experience this ship and learn how to sail.

Note that the Brig Niagara won’t be running in 2023 due to mechanical issues, but will hopefully be out again in 2024.

Looking for other boat tours in Pennsylvania? Check out the Gateway Clipper in Pittsburgh , the Hiawatha in Williamsport , and the boat tour at Penn’s Cave near State College .

Sunset dinner cruise on beautiful Presque Isle Bay

A very special cruise, especially as the Tall Ships Festival was in progress. The ship is a wonderful paddle wheeler, and the ride among twelve restored Tall Ships in the bay at sunset was fantastic. Add to that a great crew, and tasty food, it was a memorable evening. I've been on the Victorian Princess for a number of excursions over the years, and each has been well worth the price of admission!

overall a nice dinner cruise, advertised as boarding at 6 15 and eating in dock from 6 30 till 7 before sailing in reality boarding didnt begin till 5 27 sailing began about 6 45 and eating didnt begin till about 10 minutes into the sailing, crew is very friendly main portions of buffet were served by staff and was very small portions, however after every one got served then you could go back for seconds. food tasted very good except the pasta it was overcooked and sauce seemed like it came out of a can and was bland. unfortunely there was no sunset as it was cloudy and captain turned around early because he feared the wind would create turbulance. but it was a pleasent ride on the lake also inside cabin where you eat was very hot and stuffy no ac

Seems to be a general consensus that the cruise itself is a wonderful event for Erie, but the food and wait staff leave a LOT to be desired. Since we were sitting on the second floor dining room, we were last to get called to eat. The salad was not enough for the four of us, and what was left was not too fresh. The cookies for dessert didn't even look good enough to try. The captain did a fabulous job of timing for a gorgeous Erie sunset and views for photographing. Music played was appropriate. Overall experience was great, but I don't really care about the food. If I went specifically looking for a good dinner, I would have been really disappointed.

Was in town for a night. Decided on a dinner cruise. Easy boarding process. Catered food was ok. Even offered seconds. The trip was enjoyable and crew was very friendly. There is room for improvement for maintenance and cleanliness of the boat. Otherwise, the trip was enjoyable.

We just recently sailed on the Victorian Princess Cruise lines for the Sunday Italian Family Dinner cruise. It was expensive but we splurged since we were celebrating our anniversary with our daughter. The boat is Beautiful! We Loved seeing the big paddle wheel in the back of the boat and feeling the beautiful breeze on the deck. We kept anxiously waiting for some nice music to play upstairs where we were sitting since we could faintly hear it in the speakers but it was very garbled and quiet and we could not hear it. We were disappointed because we would have liked to have danced upstairs but instead we danced outside on the first deck later after dinner. The food on the buffet was very good but we were surprised that we could not serve ourselves being that it was a buffet. We were not impressed with the wait staff serving us. The young woman who served my husband and daughter put more on my 8 year old daughter's plate than my husband's! We wanted water to drink and our server upstairs forgot who wanted the 3 waters. The people who ordered the paid alcoholic drinks were served first. We didn't get our drinks until we were almost done with our dinner! The same young woman who served my young daughter more than my husband, also asked us what we wanted for dessert. She had the lemon cake and asked if we wanted chocolate chip brownies but she had to go downstairs to get them. She did apologize as she handed our desserts out to us on our Used napkins that they didn't have Any plates. We looked around and saw the shocked appalled facial expressions of everyone around us! This was uncalled for considering it was an expensive dinner cruise! However, we did see a wait staff lady bring up 1 paper plate to a woman but that was it. We were not pleased! After as I mentioned, we went downstairs and danced out on the deck. The crew members were very nice and even took our picture for us. They were much friendlier than the wait staff! As we were leaving, that same young woman who served us earlier, grumbled, " Thanks " to us as we left. We feel she was not a good representation for the cruise line. She just seemed like she was having a bad day or something which we understand that everyone has them but customer service really does say so much about a business of any kind especially if you spend a lot of money there. The captain and the crew members were very nice and they wished us a good night and safe trip back home. They did represent the company very well so hats off to the crewmembers and captain but the wait staff needs much improvement!

Once again, on behalf of Therapy Dogs United, we want to thank the "stellar crew" for the stellar service we received on yesterday's" Victorian Princess" dinner cruise! All was certainly smooth sailing! The weather could not have been more perfect, the service impeccable and the food outstanding! Like last year, Betty was indispensible as she ensured our boarding needs went smoothly! The service team couldn't do enough to be certain our entertainment/dinner needs were met. The food was perfect! Most importantly, the final, most appreciative touch was when your Captain,-at the conclusion of the cruise thanked "Therapy Dogs United "for their attendance! Stellar customer service!! We are already making plans for next year's annual volunteer celebration on the Victorian Princess! We thank the Victorian Princess for the attention and stellar service!

Our party of four all thought the Brunch Cruise was a nice little cruise. Seeing the overall rating, pictures and comments, it seems this business must have gotten some sort of makeover. Lucky for us! We arrived at the dock on State Street about 30 minutes before our 11:30 departure. We reported to the kiosk to check in and get our wrist bands and tickets after booking online. We boarded and sat in the first floor dining area. The boat was clean and bright. There was a singer providing live entertainment. He sang retro love songs with some soft pop songs thrown in. This 80s grad loved the mellow, familiar music. The brunch was delicious. We were served a buffet of boneless fried chicken, creamy mac and cheese, smoked cheddar sausage links, French toast with fresh blueberries, seasoned scrambled eggs and an assortment of fresh fruit. The food was all delicious! We walked around the boat and viewed the water from lots of vantage points. It was fun to sit at a table up on the viewing deck. All four of us loved this cruise. It was perfect for us native Erie residents who have moved away and were back visiting family. Afterwards we took a drive around the peninsula and stopped for ice cream at Sara's. Lovely Erie afternoon!

One star for the fact the vessel did its job and one star for the scenery. This charming relic has been sadly neglected. It is utterly filthy from the crusted windows that were so dirty you couldn't see out of to cobwebs dangling from the ceiling. I was actually shocked over the way they overlooked the obvious. Secondly, it is apparent they *try* to create a somewhat classy ambiance with their evening dinner cruises with cloth tablecloths, but it is just incingruent with the blaring dirtiness and spider remnants fluttering over your head. Then they had out rusted and old cookware and food prep containers in advance of serving but it just gave off church potluck vibes. This cruise company comes across as dumpy, tacky and lacking class. I was very unhappy there wasn't even a narration. It kind or seemed pointless to be honest. You weren't paying for experience or ambiance but rather a quick ride around the bay.

We went on a cruise. It was adults only. There was a Dj on the top deck. There was a bar on the lowest floor. It was a nice warm day but I'm glad I had my jacket. We went at the perfect time because we got to see the sailboat race. The drinks were basic but affordable. No food on the boat. They sold bags of chips for the only snack option. We were out for 1.5 hours which was the perfect amount of time.

dinner boat cruise erie pa

Where do I start, the boat was a small, raggedy, rust bucket. The interior was circa 1960's, complete with wood paneling on the walls and a barely suspended drop ceiling. Drinks were served in tiny Styrofoam cups, announcements were on a static filled, barely audible p.a. system. The slop they tried to pass off as food wasn't fit for the starving of a third world country. They said the food was catered...uh, huh. I ended up googling facts about Lake Erie since the "tour" portion of the cruise never happened. Thankfully, a small boat weather advisory cut our two hour torture to just over an hour. Not only will I never recommend this dinner cruise to anyone, I will never ever come back to Erie PA.

First the good: it's a boat ride in Presque Isle Bay and out into Lake Erie. It's beautiful, and you can sit on the top deck of the boat which is open. A lovely ride. And they had a nice two-piece band playing. BUT... The brunch...the food was absolutely disgusting. Like "can't eat it" disgusting. A few in our party gave it a shot and at least put food on the plate, but the smart ones just avoided it altogether. The boat was quite dirty. I get that it's old, and it's on a lake where there are bugs and spiders, but at almost $50 a head it should be reasonably clean. It wasn't. After the cruise we actually went across the street to eat at the Sheraton cause we were all starved. We chatted with a server who said they knew that this operation had recently changed hands, so maybe that's why the food was so awful. Save yourself the stomach ache and just charter a fishing boat or something if you want to take a ride out on the water.

We booked a 2 hour brunch cruise on 10/24 from 11:30-1:30. I couldn't find any info online regarding the menu or if the bar would be open. Having a more organized website would have been helpful. I called twice and didn't reach anyone so I sent message on Facebook. Someone replied and told me to look online for the menu (lol). Not helpful but, ok. When we arrived, the staff informed us that the caterer was a no call / no show again. They refunded our tickets since there was no food as planned and took us on a complimentary hour long cruise, which was nice. The bar was open so we had some cocktails. The bartender was ok but could have been more attentive. We chatted with another couple and they said this is the second time the caterer cancelled and that this cruise was supposed to be their make up cruise after their last one was cancelled. Sounds like it's time for a new caterer. The interior and exterior of the boat needs some work but it was pretty clean for the most part. The boat crew was very nice. There was a young man that greeted customers as they boarded and handled setting up the walkway when we docked - very nice kid and a hard worker. We made the most of the cruise and overall it was an "ok" experience. I think it's neat that we have the Victorian Princess in Erie. With more a more effective management team and better focus on customer service, this could be a 5 star experience.

Amazing experience, watching sunset and moonrise at the same time! Captain and staff were so passionate and friendly, they shared lots of cool information with us! Hasan was awesome, young passionate Captain in future!

Photo of Heidi W.

skip the dining cruise. overpriced and food is unimpressive and tasteless. we did the lunch one and felt ripped off. they need to change catering company. the cruise itself wouldn't have been bad if we could have seen through the window but it was covered in cobwebs and dead bugs.

Photo of Mary L.

Me and my children had a great time. The food was good the service was fantastic. The boat ride was perfect through the bay. My only complaint would be we had to pay for water they didn't offer coffee or water at dinner.

9 Ways to Party on a Boat in Pennsylvania

There is such a specific pleasure to hanging out on a boat, feeling the wind on your face and taking in the scenery – be it a glittering city skyline, or a lush forest that spreads out for miles. Add to that a drink in hand, or a decadent catered feast, and you’ve got yourself an evening to remember!

Though Pennsylvania is landlocked, there are a bounty of gorgeous rivers and lakes sprinkled across the Commonwealth, each one with its own history and ecosystem. There are so many ways to enjoy these bodies of water, but none as much fun as actually being out on the water and seeing the landscape from a whole new perspective. Here are nine epic boating experiences available in PA, each offering some sort of food and drink:

Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat (Harrisburg, PA)

View this post on Instagram Holy ship! This is our office for the day. It’s our annual Hootenanny. Office: Closed. Conversation: Flowing. Boat puns: Coming in waves. A post shared by andculture (@andculture) on Aug 16, 2019 at 6:27am PDT

This charming craft, an authentic stern-driven paddle wheel riverboat has been cruising along the Susquehanna River through Harrisburg, delighting locals and tourists, alike, for the last 31 years. It offers scenic sightseeing tours nearly every day throughout the summer, as well as a packed schedule of ticketed dinners and events that go on well into the fall. Popular cruises include the Brews Cruise , featuring brewers from around the region and the country, and interactive Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Cruises . The entire boat is also available for private rentals and charters . The Pride of the Susquehanna is actually a nonprofit, and the proceeds from its cruises (aside from operational expenses) are donated to community service projects that benefit seniors, children, military veterans and other great causes. 1 Riverside Dr., City Island, Harrisburg; (717) 234-6500 .

Lake Raystown Resort is a popular destination, comprising 400 acres of property right on the water, including lodgings, dining, swimming, family activities and more. One of its signature offerings is the Proud Mary Showboat , a paddlewheel boat with a busy calendar of entertainment. In the summer, weekends see events like karoake cruises, prime rib dinners and kids bingo brunches, and weekday schedules consist of sightseeing and dinner cruises. From September through late October, fall foliage cruises are a wonderful way to take in the colors of the changing season. 3101 Chipmunk Crossing, Entriken; (814) 658-3584 .

Ship & Safety Information

The Scallywags is a custom designed wooden vessel that was built in Maryland in 2013 and took 6 months to complete. After it’s construction it was sailed on the Atlantic Ocean, through the St. Lawerence Seaway, to the Great Lakes, to its home port of Erie where it has operated ever since.

The ship is 54′ in length at the water line, 62′ overall, with a 20′ beam and 4′ draft and is powered by Twin Volvo Diesels, each 230 HP.

The vessel was built to U.S. Coast Guard requirements and is certified to carry 75 passengers. It is equipped with the latest lifesaving and navigational equipment. Our Captains and Deckhands are all U.S. Coast Guard licensed and certified.

Cruise ships, caviar, cost of living. How Erie could become hub for retirement, tourism

This is a fourth in a series of columns by retired Erie engineer William R. Miller exploring   possible avenues for growing the region's economy.

It would seem to make the most sense to put together a master plan for tourism and retirement living encompassing Erie and the entire, interrelated "Upper Allegheny" region. Perhaps the Upper Allegheny could earn the title "most senior-friendly region in the northern U.S."? How about nicknaming Erie "Camelot on the Lake"?

Tourism and retirement living - a combined plan

In various studies, our region scored well above the national average of other metropolitan areas in five critical areas: low cost-of-living; access to quality health care; low crime; good transportation (except, currently, air service); recreation and opportunities for higher education. Most of these critical areas are coincidently the very ones that are particularly important to retirees. A major part of the Erie economy is based on tourism and retirees. The critical areas of low crime, good transportation and recreation plus ambience are key to supporting the tourism part of the economy.

I put these two plans together because, in both cases, the region's poor rating on climate is a negative. Attention needs to be paid to ameliorating the effects of climate to the greatest extent possible. A paid regional coordinator could work part-time to administer these plans.

Make Erie tourist- and retiree-friendly with covered walkways

One obvious method to counter the effects of Erie's climate on visitors and retirees is to dramatically increase the use of covered walkways or " porte cochere " throughout the region so that people can load and unload from cars, buses and other transportation without being exposed to the weather. For instance, in Erie, East 8th Street from State to French could be covered by a roof and made an on-demand "No Parking" block when events are held. Warner Theatre-goers could be dropped off and picked up or access the parking garage without getting wet. Similarly, East 8th Street between the Erie Insurance Arena and its parking garage could also be roofed over.

Zoning could be changed to require nursing homes, hospitals, airports, stadiums, entertainment centers and hotels to also have auto/bus-accessible covered entranceways. Property tax incentives could be used to encourage building nursing homes with direct, covered access walkways to enclosed malls or shopping areas. Malls and shopping plazas that do not provide protection from the elements to go from store to store should be penalized by zoning and/or extra charges on property taxes.

For older adults, every effort should be made to reduce their need to venture out in inclement weather. Services like Meals on Wheels, Visiting Nurses and similar organizations should be encouraged and incentivized to address the weather-affected problems of older adults in this area. As noted in a previous article in this series , a single transportation hub, anchored on the airport would help make travel easier. The area's snowplowing plan should first address routes frequently used by older people.

Cultivate year-round events, commemorations to attract tourists

It would help tourism in the fall, winter and spring months if we had more events. The formation on ice in Presque Isle Bay is not reliable enough, with the current climate variations, to plan an event around it. Outdoor skating rinks, however, could be set up in the winter for sports, shows and recreational skating in parks. Think of them as small-town Rockefeller Centers.

We could come up with a number of other unusual "non-summer" attractions. One source might be to look for past events to commemorate. For 2024, the Erie Extension Canal's 180th completion anniversary, Drake Well's 165th anniversary and Chautauqua's 150th Anniversary are obvious candidates. The list also includes the April 8 total solar eclipse with Erie situated in the direct path and a D-Day reenactment on Aug. 15-17 in Conneaut, Ohio.

Other events to track for milestone commemorations include events tied to the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie ; the 1832 discovery of bog iron at Presque Isle; the 1843 launch of USS Michigan , the U.S. Navy's first iron warship; the 1844 arrival of the first boat on new Erie Extension Canal ; the founding of Griswold Manufacturing Company in 1865; and the launch of the Zippo lighters used by the U.S. military in WWII .

How we can become a stop for Great Lakes cruise ships

There are will be at least four cruise ship lines operating on the Great Lakes in 2024, mostly shuttling between Toronto and Milwaukee or Chicago. They operate cruises ranging from eight to16 days. Every week from the late spring to the early fall one or sometimes two of these ships, on their way through Lake Erie, sail right past Erie without stopping here. Pearl Seas Cruises and Viking Cruises both have itineraries that include a layover at Cleveland and Viking has an itinerary that stops at Pelee Island instead. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Ponant Cruises don't stop at all in Lake Erie but sail directly between Detroit and Toronto.

It may be difficult to get these lines to change all their sailings right away. We should concentrate initially on getting them to stop here when their itinerary coincides with some special local occasion. For instance, this year I believe several cruise ships are passing near Erie in August and September. All these would tie in with Battle of Lake Erie and Drake Well celebrations.

If we want to attract cruise ships to stop in Erie regularly, we will need to make available some optional excursions to local attractions. These might also be offered to non-passengers as space is available.

Shore excursions we could offer Great Lakes cruise lines

In Erie, a tour of the Erie Maritime Museum, a proposed aquarium and a proposed caviar hatchery (discussed below), perhaps combined with a short sail on the Niagara could be offered. Maybe we could even scare up another tall ship to visit Erie on when the Sept. 10th Battle of Lake Erie anniversary rolls around to put on a reenactment. And, depending on schedules, a coinciding performance of the Erie Philharmonic might be a possibility.

Winery tours already exist. Certain ones would have to be coordinated with the cruise ship arrivals and departures. Brewery tours are also a possibility. A tour to Chautauqua and possibly Lily Dale could be set up, perhaps coinciding with the Chautauqua Anniversary Celebration in 2024. These would have to be coordinated with the cruise ship schedules.

Other possible regional excursions might be:

Fall foliage rail trip to Drake Well, with passengers boarding the train car on the siding across the Bayfront Parkway from the Erie Cruise Terminal. This could tie into the Drake Well anniversary celebration in 2024. At least three companies — Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR , Ozark Mountain Railcar and Railexco — lease out private passenger cars (some with catering facilities). Cuyahoga even has a self-propelled passenger car that doesn't require a locomotive.

There are also some Upper Allegheny festivals that might interest cruise passengers: Clymer, N.Y.'s Tulip Festival ; Troika Russian Festival in Erie; the Punxsutawney Groundhog Festival; Pennsylvania Firefly Festival in Tionesta ; North East Firemen's Cherry Festival; oil heritage festivals in Oil City and Titusville, and the Rock in River Festival and stone-skipping championship in Franklin ; and PennWest Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival.

In my view — with the possible exception of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — Erie and the region have more current and potential, higher quality shore excursions to offer than Cleveland. The "competition" offers excursions, for example, to Ohio Amish country, Cleveland's West Side market, Little Italy neighborhood and Cultural Gardens and the Museum of Art, as well as opportunities for birding, kayaking and hiking.

Protect local teams with local government investment

Erie has several major sports teams which both encourage tourism and are a source of civic pride. Unfortunately, such teams are at the mercy of owners and leagues who might move the team out at any time. It is proposed that the region secure these resources by following Green Bay's lead and have the public and/or the local governments buy a controlling interest in the teams.

Proposed future attractions - Great Lakes caviar, Oil Creek boat ride

  • The most obvious possibility would be a freshwater aquarium featuring lake and stream fish. The bayfront is an ideal location for an aquarium because there is a waterworks plant immediately to the west and a wastewater treatment plant a few blocks to the east. The Erie Maritime Museum could be tied in to service aquarium visitors and save administrative costs.
  • Why not create a "visitor-friendly" demonstration caviar hatchery as part of the aquarium? New technology now allows the eggs to be harvested from the sturgeon without having to sacrifice the fish, as was done formerly. This would be a very unusual facility to visit. Maybe we could even come up with our own brand of caviar.
  • In the early days of the oil boom around Oil City and Titusville, there were few wagon roads and Oil Creek was too shallow for heavy barge traffic. To solve the problem, they would dam Oil Creek to create a lake and accumulate a fleet of boats laden with barrels of oil and manned by boatmen. When the boats were all loaded, they would breach the dam and ride the flood down Oil Creek to the more navigable Allegheny River. They could then float down the Allegheny to Pittsburgh. It occurs to me that the people who design amusement park rides, like those at Universal Studio Park, could make a ride that would simulate what had to have been a wild ride on the flood as it rushed down the creek bed. Ideally, the ride would be at Drake Well State Park.
  • To commemorate the history of the Erie Extension Canal, I suggest building a replica of a passenger packet boat at either the Maritime Museum or the Hagen Historical Museum, where visitors could dine on board "canal boat style," perhaps while listening to as lecture on the canal.
  • The Erie Extension Canal's tow path was one of the major routes used by enslaved people escaping to freedom. I understand that there are a few houses left along the old canal route in this area that were once on the Underground Railroad. It might be possible to arrange tours of some of these houses.
  • A recent article by Darrell Owens discussed the efforts to bring a retired Oliver Perry-class Guided Missile Frigate to Erie. If we could then add the USS Wolverine, or at least a partial replica of the facade, Erie would become the only port in the U.S. displaying the whole history of naval ship construction.

Improved Air Service

Finally, good air service is so critical to the success of both tourism and retirement living plans that I am going to expand on my previous discussion of the subject in an earlier article.

I believe U.S. Congressman Mike Kelly, who represents Erie, should join with U.S. Reps. Dave Joyce (Ashtabula County, Ohio), and Nick Langworthy (Chautauqua County, N.Y.) to work on getting an Essential Air Service designation for the Erie International Airport.

The EAS program was put into place to guarantee that small communities that were served by certificated air carriers before airline deregulation maintain a minimal level of scheduled air service. The United States Department of Transportation is mandated to provide eligible EAS communities with access to the National Air Transportation System. This is generally accomplished by subsidizing two round trips a day with 30-to-50-seat aircraft, or additional frequencies with aircraft with nine seats or fewer, usually to a large- or medium-hub airport. The department currently subsidizes commuter and certificated air carriers to serve approximately115 communities in the lower 48 contiguous states that otherwise would not receive any scheduled air service.

I believe we should forget the major airlines which are downsizing and focus on the growth-oriented, non-captive regionals such as SkyWest, Republic, Mesa and Compass & GoJet, which have riderships in the millions. Frontier Airlines is expanding aggressively in our area. They already announced new routes in the next two years to add service from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Raleigh and Jamaica and from Cleveland to Jacksonville, Pittsburgh and Jamaica. It seems to me that these are the airlines we should be targeting, using EAS subsidies and other cash incentives.

William Miller: Why don't we restore commercial fishing in Erie?

This would be a long shot, but perhaps we could explore partnering with the FedEx cargo plane that travels between Erie and Cleveland each day. "Combi" aircraft have been and are used. These planes have a passenger compartment (usually in the front portion of the plane) and a freight compartment in the rear. If a deal could be made, this could give us at least a once a day round trip flight to Cleveland. If the schedule were adjusted, it could allow passengers from Chicago to get to Cleveland in time to catch the plane to Erie.

William R. Miller is the former vice president of research and development at AMSCO. He formerly co-chaired the Erie 2000 study for the Erie Conference in 1984 and has been updating and expanding that study in recent years. He has also served as a volunteer docent at the Erie Maritime Museum, published a book on the Battle of Lake Erie and written a pamphlet for the museum on the Erie Extension Canal.
