Komodo Boat Tour – 4 Days from Lombok to Flores

Padar Island

The Komodo boat tour was the most amazing experience that I had during my two months backpacking trip through South East Asia. I booked the  4 days and 3 nights Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure . This tour departs from Lombok island and we went all the way to Labuan Bajo in Flores.

Spending the days exploring islands, snorkeling and sunbathing on deck until the sun sets on the horizon was an unforgettable experience. At night you can watch the clear, starry sky until falling asleep to the slight swaying of the boat.

If you have enough time, I definitely recommend including this boat trip (or a similar one) on your trip to Bali.

Komodo Boat Tour, Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Table of Contents

Things to know before you go

Here are a few things you should consider before booking a Komodo boat tour.

Which agency to book the Komodo boat tour with?

Wanua Adventure Sunset

As I said above, I booked my Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure and I highly recommend them. Be aware that this is a back to basics boat tour: no phone reception, a very basic shower and sleeping on a mattress on deck (or in a private room if you pay a little extra). What I want to say is: Don’t expect luxury and comfort – it’s an adventure!

The crew of Wanua Adventure really did everything in their power to make this an amazing experience for every passenger. They kept the boat clean at all times, the food was amazing and they always made sure that everyone was okay and enjoying the adventure.

Besides Wanua Adventure, there are other agencies which offer similar trips to Komodo National Park. If you’re willing to pay more, you can even book a private tour and have a more luxurious experience.

Single day vs. multi-day boat tours

Wanua Adventure Sunset

You can fully adapt the Komodo boat tour to your schedule and find a tour that fits your time frame. There’s even the option of doing a single day boat tour . However, for that you need to travel to Labuan Bajo first as those tours don’t depart from Lombok.

Personally, I recommend a multi-day boat tour to Komodo National Park. It’s an unforgettable adventure and the sunsets and the night sky from the boat are simply breathtaking. Plus, you obviously get to explore more amazing places on a multi-day tour.

If your time is limited and you can only do a one-day Komodo boat tour, then definitely make sure to include  Padar Island in your tour. This is the place with the most amazing view of Komodo National Park .

Where does the Komodo boat tour start and end?

KELOR ISLAND, Komodo National Park

The 4-day boat trip that I did departs in Lombok and ends in Labuan Bajo on Flores. There’s also the option to do the Komodo boat trip the other way around, starting from Labuan Bajo and arriving on Lombok.

Most other agencies offer their tours from Labuan Bajo and also bring you back there.

How much does a Komodo boat tour cost?

The 4 days and 3 nights trip with Wanua Adventure in deck class costs about 150€.  If you prefer to have some more privacy and comfort you can book a private room for 200€.

This includes an entrance fee to Komodo National Park, a government fee and a snorkelling fee.

What's included in a Komodo boat tour?

Komodo National Park

The Komodo boat tour is an all inclusive tour with  3 freshly prepared meals per day , unlimited coffee, tea and water. If you want to bring additional drinks you have the chance to buy them in advance and cool them on board. Also, I recommend bringing some snacks in case you have cravings in-between meals.

Snorkelling grear (mask and snorkel) is also provided, as well as basic fishing gear .

There are some charging points on board for your electric devices, but don’t rely on them. Sometimes they don’t work and there are also not enough for everyone to charge their devices.

What to bring on a Komodo boat tour

The Komodo boat tour is an all-inclusive adventure but there are some essentials that you should definitely pack for the trip.

  • Power bank I love this one  because it has enough power to charge your device several times, which will be very useful on this multi-day boart trip-
  • Towel These microfiber travel towels  are ideal because they’re lightweight, they dry fast and they don’t take much space.
  • Sun screen & hat
  • Extra drinks (beer, cider, soft drinks)
  • Sweater for fresh nights
  • Camera I use the Sony Alpha A6000 , which is a compact and lightweight camera, ideal for photography beginners.

Day 1: Lombok and Kenawa Island

Kenawa Island, Komodo Boat Tour

Before the Komodo boat tour I had been staying in the beach town Kuta in Lombok. I was picked up from my hostel early in the morning and after a long drive we arrived in Bangsal. This was the meeting point of all passengers and the guides. Everyone checked in, was served traditional Indonesian breakfast and was assigned to their boat. Then we hopped onto another van and drove for 3 more hours to the harbor of Kayangan in East Lombok .

Full of excitement for the adventure ahead of me, I boarded the boat  together with the other passengers  and we headed out to the sea.

I had booked deck class which meant sleeping on a mattress next to the other passengers on deck. This was the most affordable option and I was stoked about the feeling of the light ocean breeze at night. Those who had booked a private room had a bit more comfort and privacy as they could close the door to their room.

While the space on deck was quite limited and the mattresses were close to each other, I was happy about my decision to sleep on deck. It was really comfortable and there was fresh air all the time.

Once everyone was settled, lunch was served. We ate together and started getting to know the other passengers.

Kenawa Island, Komodo Boat Tour

After lunch we made our first stop at Kenawa island . On the small uninhabited island there’s nothing but a snack vendor and small restaurant on the beach. A narrow path leads across the island up to the top of a hill. The sun was already low and shining a beautiful golden light on the grass-covered ground. We hiked up the little hill and watched the stunning view of the sunset from there.

Kenawa Island, Komodo Boat Tour

When the sun had almost set we headed back to the boat and made our way to Bola island where we anchored and stayed the night.

I was excited for the first night on board, wondering if I would sleep well. It took me a while to fall asleep but I loved the adventurous feeling of being out on the ocean. After a while I finally fell asleep to the soft swaying of the boat. At 2 am the howling of the starting engine woke me up. We had to get going to arrive to our next stop on time.

Day 2: Moyo Island

Kenawa Island, Komodo Boat Tour

On the second day we had an early start as we woke up with the rising sun. Before breakfast we could already jump from the boat and have a morning swim. The fresh air paired with the tranquility of a remote bay and the morning sun kissing our skin was so calming. This is what pure happiness and joy feels like.

Moyo Island Waterfall, Komodo Boat Tour

After breakfast and my first essential cup of coffee we explored Moyo Island and hiked to a picturesque waterfall. We spent about an hour there climbing the waterfall, jumping into the cool water, and taking photos. The remaining day was to our own disposal for sunbathing on the beach, snorkelling or simply chilling on the boat.

tour lombok flores

Time passed rapidly and suddenly the sun had started to set. The sunsets from the boat are amazing. Sitting on the deck, becoming friends with the other travelers and watching the sun go down out on the open sea is magical.

Sunset Komodo National Park

What I hadn’t expected at that point was that the most magical moment of the day was yet to come. Once it got dark I headed up to the deck again and I was absolutely overwhelmed by the view. The deep black sky was full of stars .

As we were in the middle of nowhere out on the ocean, there was no light pollution at all. I lied down on my back and looked up while feeling the movement of the boat. In moments like this, I realize how small I am.

I also realized that I’m on the other side of the world, out on the sea for 4 days with people I  didn’t  know before, all by myself. These are the kind of moments where I start thinking about life and being grateful for everything.

Day 3: Komodo Island and Pink Beach

On the third day it was time to visit the famous Komodo dragons on Komodo Island. The dragons only live in and around Komodo National Park and they can kill a human with only one bite when they attack.

Komodo Island

Rinca Island, Komodo dragon, Komodo National Park

I was excited to see those deathly animals in their natural habitat. We got a guided tour by a ranger who would answer all our questions about the Komodo dragons.

To be honest, I had expected Komodo Island to be more impressive a s I had heard a lot about it before. We didn’t see many Komodo dragons because they usually like to hide. The walk through the island wasn’t exceptional either. But anyways, it was nice to spot at least a few Komodo dragons and to learn more about them.

Pink Beach Komodo

The second stop on day 3 of the Komodo boat tour was Pink Beach . It has this name because the sand has a pinkish tone. At first I didn’t see it at all – when I hear “Pink Beach” I imagine something different than this. But, when looking closely and from the right angle you can see some red shiny particles in the sand.

Pieces of broken coral reef are washed ashore and make the sand shimmer in pink.  What surprised me was that on the photos on Google the beach looks completely pink. I’m not quite sure if these photos are edited or if the color depends on factors like the weather or the season as well.

But anyways – pink or not pink – the beach is amazing. We went snorkelling in the warm turquoise waters and saw lots of marine life. Unfortunately, the coral reefs are devastated because too many visitors are careless and step on them.

Pink Beach Komodo

There’s a small hill on one end of the beach – and of course I wanted to hike it. When there’s a hill with a beautiful view almost nothing keeps me from climbing it. And it was absolutely worth it. It took less than 10 minutes to get to the top and the view was stunning. There’s another beach on the other side, surrounded by greenish hills that look like they’re from a fantasy world.

Wanua Adventures

After a couple of hours at Pink Beach we had to go back on board as we still had a far way ahead of us that day. We spent the afternoon sunbathing on the deck, reading and socializing while the boat was bringing us closer to our destination.

When we reached the place where we’d spend the night we threw a little boat party as it was our last evening on board. The sunset was stunning again, just like the days before. We enjoyed each other’s company, played games and had fun until everyone got too tired from that day’s adventures and went to bed.

Day 4: Padar island, Rinca island and Labuan Bajo

Padar Island

The last day was my personal highlight of the Komodo boat tour. Watching the s unrise on Padar Island  beat everything we had experienced so far.

Padar island

The alarm rang us out of bed at 5 am and the crew dropped us off at Padar Island right after. It was still pitch black and we didn’t see much of the island yet.

Together with travelers from other boats who had the same schedule we hiked up a hill from where we’d watch the sunrise. To secure us a good spot on the top we were almost running up and overtaking others.

Sunrise at Padar Island

The top of the hill on Padar island was quite crowded, but luckily we found a perfect spot to sit down and enjoy the view. As the sun was about to rise, the darkness disappeared and it revealed the spectacular view of our surroundings. Everything looked so surreal. The formation of the island is absolutely unique and the pink-ish light of the sunrise made it look even more impressive.

Padar Island Sunrise

When there was enough light we took turns in taking photos of each other. Don’t be fooled by how empty it looks on the photos – we actually had to queue for 5-10 minutes to get a photo at this spot!

When we were done taking photos we made our way down again. Back on the boat, freshly prepared pancakes for breakfast awaited us. Everyone was still in awe from the experience on Padar island and we  couldn’t  believe how beautiful and unique this place was.

Rinca island

Then we continued the journey to Rinca island. There we could see some Komodo dragons again and we got a guided tour across the island. Personally, I enjoyed Rinca island more than Komodo island as the scenery was prettier.

Rinca Island, Komodo National Park

Rinca island was the last official stop of the Komodo boat tour. At that point we had the option of either heading straight to the harbor of Labuan Bajo or stopping one last time for snorkeling and swimming. Everyone agreed on staying a little longer on the boat and adding another stop to jump into the crystal clear waters again.

Wanua Adventures

After a couple of hours we made our way to Labuan Bajo, the final destination of the Komodo boat tour.

Labuan Bajo

When we arrived to Labuan Bajo we said our goodbyes to the crew and to the other passengers. I was so much looking forward to a shower and a proper bed like never before.

The first thing I did was to go for a delicious Italian pizza. I had been eating only traditional Indonesian food for the past days so it was amazing to have a European meal for a change.

Labuan Bajo is a lovely little village that is not very developed yet. Tourism has been growing in recent years because of the boat tours to Komodo National Park, but it’s still just a tiny fraction compared to a place like Bali.

I wrote a detailed guide on Labuan Bajo on where to stay, where to eat and things to do.

Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure - Yes or no?

If you’re into adventure and you’re okay with renouncing luxury and comfort for a few days, then the Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure is definitely the right choice for you.

Komodo Boat Tour

I was traveling solo but I was lucky to meet these amazing people on board. We met as strangers and said goodbye as friends. Getting to know the other passengers and experiencing this adventure together makes it even more memorable.

Coffee is the fuel that keeps me running. I put a lot of time and effort into creating blog posts to make travel planning easier for you. If you benefited from my blog, I would appreciate a cup of coffee! 🙂

Buy Me a Coffee

This was the most amazing experience during my 2 months trip through South East Asia and I definitely recommend it to every adventurer.

If you want to explore Komodo National Park without renouncing privacy and comfort, you can also book a private tour with a different operator. But be aware that this is considerably more expensive.

No matter which option and agency you choose, doing a boat tour to Komodo National Park should definitely be on your list for a trip to Indonesia!

This seems a fun tour. I thought I had read they had closed the National Park to save the natural habitat. I really want to visit but also feel scary looking at these creatures.

It really is a fun tour! They announced a closure from 2020 for a year, but then cancelled it again. Not quite sure why.. probably they’re dependent on the income generated by visitors

Hi, I’m close to the Gili islands now, and would live to do this trip. However, I’m 56 and am likely to be a lot older than most of the other passengers. Honestly, do you think this will be a problem?

I don’t think it will be a problem. You’ll have a great time for sure 🙂

Hi Sven, ich kann mich nicht mehr genau erinnern, aber ich glaube schon, dass ich vorab was bezahlen musste.

Komodo Boat Trip: Lombok – Flores

Komodo Boat Trip: Lombok - Flores

Before my first trip to Indonesia , I had no idea about Komodo Island or the Komodo boat trip which goes from Lombok to Flores Island. The boat trip takes you on a lifetime adventure, stopping at many unbelievably beautiful islands and beaches and showing you the diversity of Indonesia. Yes, I did learn about Komodo dragons and Indonesia at the elementary school, but let’s face it, that was quite a long time ago. And at that time I had no idea, that one day, I could actually end up on a boat trip to Komodo Island and exploring inland of Flores Island. So as you can imagine, the highlights of this Komodo boat trip were the biggest lizard on this planet, the Komodo dragons, and the stunning nature and beyond amazing underwater life. I always recommend the Komodo boat trip adventure to anyone who is planning a trip to Bali.

Komodo Boat Trips starts in Lombok, which is nearby Bali island, going around Sumbawa Islands towards Komodo and Rinca Islands where living Komodo dragons can be spotted and ending in Labuan Bajo, Flores from where you can fly back to Bali or Java. Option for doing the Komodo Boat Trip the other way around – Flores to Lombok – is also possible.

The boat trip takes you on a lifetime adventure, stopping at many unbelievably beautiful islands and beaches and showing you the diversity of Indonesia.

While traveling through Bali, Lembongan, Gili’s, and Lombok with my best friend, I couldn’t help to notice that they were offering everywhere 4 days 3 nights Komodo boat trip. I was tempted to do it but I was scared of being seasick. Yup, unfortunately, I’m one of those whose stomach goes easily crazy :-(.

Talking with other travelers who already took this trip, everyone said it’s amazing but after some research online I found out that a couple of boats actually sank. So that made me worry… freaking out about feeling seasick and boat sinking doesn’t sound like an ideal trip to do. (And trust me, I and my friend, had our own scary experience when our over-packed boat almost sank down when going from Gili Trawangan to Gili Air).  So my friend did the call, and decided to climb the Rinjani Volcano in Lombok instead, which was an amazing experience!!

After a half year of traveling South East Asia, I’ve returned to Indonesia and was determined to put my fears aside and take this so-called “awesome” boat trip. My original plan was going Labuan Bajo- Lombok ( most people go from Lombok – Labuan Bajo), because I wanted to meet in Lombok with a couple, I met in Laos.

But exploring Flores and changing my plans by heading to Sulawesi instead of Lombok, I ended up skipping sailing via Sumbava (there’s not much to see anyway. It’s the part you do a lot of sailing and part when your stomach can start screaming) and I did a 2 day trip around Labuan Bajo.

1. Highlights of this trip:

Get ready to do nothing for a couple of days.. just chilling, reading a book, getting to know strangers who end up on the boat with you, and simply be wowed with beautiful scenery, which you will be exploring or passing by…

  Komodo Island

One of the highlights of this trip is to visit Komodo Island where you can spot the largest living lizards – Komodo Dragons. They can be up to 3-4m long and there are around 3000 Komodo dragons living on the island.

When we got to Komodo Entrance park, our captain took us to meet with rangers. We paid a fee 20 000RPH and could choose one of the 3 routes to walk around the island. We all were in a bit lazy mode from sailing all day so we chose the shortest one via jungle.

As soon as we started to walk we saw a few dragons lying near the village kitchen. I’m positive the locals leave the food for dragons around so they can make sure the tourists can spot some in case they don’t see them while doing the track.

They were lying in a bunch, enjoying the sun, looking for predators actually pretty peacefully lol.

We were lucky enough, we saw few Komodo dragons in the jungle and 2 baby ones. We also saw many deer which Komodo dragons hunt for food. Few were escaping the jungle and resting on the beach.

If Komodo attack doesn’t kill its prey right away, their saliva has a bacteria which creates blood infection in the attacked animal and causes death, usually within a week. Komodo dragons also have a special organ for smelling. It helps them to locate this dead animal and finally get their “lunch” eaten.

But no worries!! This walk isn’t dangerous. All rangers know the dragons well and they keep everyone safe from possible attacks by these predators. If you are lucky, you get the same ranger as I did, with a pretty good set of photography skills :-).

Pulau Kalong (Bat Island)

There is a mangrove forest on Pulau Kalong (Bat Island) where thousands of fruit bats sleep during the day. We got to this island before sunset. I’m not very into bats but it was a pretty great place to get on top of our boat, drink some beer with my fellow travelers while watching these huge bats waking up and flying around while the sun was going down.

Fisherman Village

It’s a small village with a few habitats, mostly fisherman near Kalong Island. It’s also a dock spot for most of the boats with tourists and this is where we stayed for a night.

For those who don’t want to spend a night on the boat anymore, I have some good news!! Some of the families offer a very simple room to stay in. You have to pay for it and you have to lower your standards… I mean really lower your standards. But it might be good options for those who need a break from sleeping on a boat.

To our surprise, all the crew members from the boats which docked in this village took out their speakers and stereos and were ready to start a party. Our boat, made of people in the 30’s weren’t that much excited so we couldn’t notice a disappointment from our captain when asking him to lower down the cheesy music. But for those who are up for some action, you can hop in between the boats, mingle, and have fun.

After watching the fisherman village wake up and after eating our delicious breakfast (banana pancakes with tons of fresh fruit & coffee), we took off to see a small hidden beach between Island Komodo and Rinca. The sand here, has a slight pink tone to it, due to broken up coral that is mixed through it. My picture doesn’t do justice but in reality, you could see that the sand is pink. Water had a perfect temperature and it’s a great spot to just relax or do some snorkeling. There is also a short track you can hike and see the pink beach from above.

Padar Island

Padar island was a really nice surprise. After a short hike (grab water because you will sweat for sure), you will be rewarded with really stunning views of the surrounded islands and Padar bays. It’s one of a kind place and I felt totally in love.

Mantas Point

Next stop was you can put your goggles on and hop into the water is a Manta Point. Snorkeling with these huge and graceful species is simply a breath-taking experience. Even though I was struggling with a rough sea, it was still awesome feeling swimming so close to them and sharing the ocean with them.

Kanawa Island

Our last spot was an island with a white sand beach. Another nice place to swim, snorkel and chill.

We actually had to make we stay a bit shorter due to the clouds getting darker and darker. The storm was around the corner. We hopped on the boat and were heading back to Labuan Bajo. The moment we arrived back in town, the rain started pouring. I was relieved that I didn’t felt seasick and happy the nice weather lasted until we got back!

2. Getting to and from Labuan Bajo, Flores:

One way to get to or from Labuan Bajo in Flores Island is by taking a 4 day 3 night Komodo boat Trip from Lombok. Another option is to fly from or to Bali to Labuan Bajo. Make sure to sit by the window because the views are quite insane! See for yourself!

3. What’s Included:

  • 4 Day 3 Night (of 4 night if you wish) on the boat
  • 3x times a day meal
  • snacks + water, tea, coffee (no alcohol, but you can bring your own)
  • Snorkel (no fins)

The price does not include an entrance fee to Komodo Island or Rinca Island and alcohol.

4. Is it safe:

Well, that’s a good question. The trip is absolutely awesome and really worth doing but you need to make sure that everything is how it supposed to be. Meaning, before getting on the boat, check that the boat condition is ok (if something doesn’t seem right, say it). Also, check that you have enough safety vests on board.

I’m not usually the type who is afraid, I’m up for any adventure but the locals in Indonesia want to make a profit no matter what, and they don’t necessarily care if something happens to you or your belongings. So if you are ready to make memories with this trip (and I do recommend you do!!), then double-check that every passenger on the boat, including the crew, has its life vest and that they don’t put on the boat more passengers than it can handle. If all is good, just sit back relax and enjoy.

5. When is the best time to go:

I would recommend taking this trip in a dry season, so you know that the ocean is relatively calm. Dry Season is from April – December.

6. Where can I arrange the Komodo boat trip:

You can arrange the boat trip anywhere in Bali, Gili’s, Lembongan, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo travel agencies (on the street or on the beaches). The travel agencies and locals selling this boat trip are on every corner, so trust me, it’s not that hard to arrange it.

The common route is direction Lombok – Labuan Bajo but you can also go the other way around Labuan Bajo – Lombok or skip traveling via Sumbawa to Lombok and just take a 2-3 day boat trip Labuan banjo – Labuan Bajo. Most attractions are near Flores Island anyway so you will not miss a much if you don’t go from Lombok.

If arranging the trip elsewhere then in Labuan Bajo, the companies also provide a transfer to get you to Lombok where the starting point is.

7. Frequently asked questions:

How is sleeping on the boat.

Our boat had 2 staterooms with beds for 2 people each. One stateroom had bunk beds, one double bed. Another 2 people get a mattress and a pillow and sleep at the bow of the boat and crew sleeps on a deck, under the sky.

If your boat docks near the village, for some extra $$ you can sleep at the simple accommodation they provide over there or even sleep on the deck.

Are food and water provided?

The crew on the boat prepares 3x a day meals and day and snacks like fresh fruits and crackers. I must say the meals were really tasty and we had more than plenty but it all varies from boat to boat. They also provide water and coffee or tea but if you wanted alcohol you had to bring your own.

How many people total where on the boat?

It all depends on what company you do this trip and how big is their boat. Our boat had 3 crew members (captain, his helper, and chef), and 6 travelers.

Which company to buy the trip with?

Frankly, all agencies are the same, so go with the one, which doesn’t allow many people on the boat and gives you the best deal.

Is this trip for kids?

I met a few travelers who took their kids on this trip and they enjoyed it. I would say, it all depends on what kind of travelers you and your family are and how your kid is. If you need luxury or your kid is hyperactive, I think it’s not an ideal trip for your family. If you don’t mind sharing a small boat with other people, who might like to have a good time, and simply you are open for an adventure, you might have a pretty unforgettable experience.

8. Summary:

Even though I had my doubts about taking this trip, I must say it was one of the best things I did in Indonesia. I highly recommend this adventure to everyone planning a vacation in Bali. Bali is great, but you wanna explore beyond Bali. The rest of Indonesia has so much to offer that it would be a pity flying around the globe to only see one island!

Go and make your own memories!

Komodo Dragons, snorkeling crystal turquoise waters with manta rays, secret waterfalls, epic vistas, why wouldn’t you take the boat from Lombok to Flores? Read on! Or just watch the video I made:

Below I’d like to dispel some of the rumors about this boat trip from Lombok to Flores:

The boat : It was spotless, comfortable and very sea worthy. Our captain and crew were fantastic. They were completely relaxed but highly aware of all goings on. We felt extremely safe and well taken care of. There were enough life jackets (I counted), life rafts and radio as well. All things I’d heard there wouldn’t be on an Indonesian backpacker boat expedition. I’d also heard that the boat would be tiny. It wasn’t. Maybe previous bloggers who had written up this trip had never taken a boat cruise before or maybe they expected something like an American all-inclusive cruise package (which thankfully this wasn’t). The boat was plenty big enough for 30 of us. Boat life is smaller than land life, it’s a fact. We never felt cramped or crowded. We even did yoga one day on the deck!

The food : The food was basic but our bellies were never grumbly. It was mostly vegetarian. Every meal had rice, vegetables and often tempeh. We were also given the option to purchase snacks and beer in advance which the crew would keep stored and cold. When we ran out, a motorised canoe magically showed up next to our boat one day with a scraggly looking man and a cooler full of beer for purchase.  It was literally in the middle of nowhere and I don’t know how the captain pulled that off. I’ve never seen such excitement over a cooler of beer in my life. We cleaned him out. There was always enough at meals but never more than we needed. I was even surprised that every day we had fruit with lunch! Banana chocolate pancakes for breakfast were an especially delightful highlight.

Bathrooms: There were 2 bathrooms on the Wanua Adventures boat from Lombok to Flores. 1 squat toilet, 1 western. Flush was bucket flush, which is totally normal for this part of the world (and for boats). I’ve taken luxury sailing trips before and I can attest that these were some of the nicer bathrooms I’ve squatted over on a boat. Never once did anyone have to wait in line to relieve themselves and never once were the bathrooms dirty or with unwanted surprises. It’s basic, it’s Asia. We all seemed to do just fine.

The timeframe : I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out on the boat, getting to know the wonderful group of international travelers who were co-sailing together. Maybe we got lucky, every one was on the same vibe and the waters were calm and smooth the entire way. I had heard horror stories of rough seas and people sharing last words. But honestly, bring some Dramamine and suck it up. Trust in the preparedness and experience of the captain who surely knows Indonesian waters and the capabilities of his boat better than we do.  Seasickness happens and it is completely out of the control of the company and crew. If you’ve never taken a boat trip then obviously it might be surprising how much time is spent on the boat. But this is more of a mode of transportation than a proper tour. Yes, we spent hours sailing each day. That was one of the best parts! We floated by volcanoes, islands, stunning deserted beaches and remote villages. In my mind, every extra excursion was a gift. I was surprised how much land-time there actually was. On the downtime, we swapped stories shared hammocks strung across the lower deck and read to each other from our favorite books.

The Trip : Unreal. There was more than enough moments to get in all the swimming, deck diving, snorkeling and hiking we could desire. Every day we stopped at least once for an active excursion. Some days up to 3 times. The day we snorkeled with Manta Rays, the waters were so clear it felt like we were truly blessed to be witnessing such spectacular pristine nature. Aside from just Mantas, the sea life and coral was gorgeous. Some friends even saw sharks and turtles. One morning we got up early to hike to a secret waterfall. Our captain led us on a 30-minute trek through the jungle to a limestone waterfall with no one else around. He sat back and smiled as we splashed and climbed and I meditated on the rocks. On another day, we hiked to the top of a ridge that displayed for us a 360-degree view of scenery and water I could only describe as Jurassic and unlike anything I’d ever imagined. The village of Komodo was quaint and the number of friendly filthy kids who wanted to impress us with their tricks and flips was surpassed only by the number of goats walking around. Everyone greeted us warmly. Then of course there were the Komodo Dragons. We saw Komodo Dragons… in the wild(ish).

All in all, the Wanua Adventures boat from Lombok to Flores felt like the adventure of a lifetime. Intrepid, exciting, relaxing, far out from anything else Bali and Lombok have to offer. If you’re craving adventure, something out of the ordinary, if you can leave your comfort zone and creature comforts behind, do it. This trip is not for the high maintenance, those who do not like spending time with new people, or picky eaters.

If you’re craving a real expedition look no further. Grab the boat from Lombok to Flores and get on the adventure of your life!

Walking Tour: Kitai Gorod

Kitai Gorod, with its twisting and winding streets, is the oldest section of Moscow outside the Kremlin. The literal translation of Kitai Gorod is "Chinatown," but there has never been a Chinese settlement here. The origin of the word kitai is disputed; it may come from the Tatar word for fortress, but most likely it derives from the Russian word kita, in reference to the bundles of twigs that were used to reinforce the earthen wall that once surrounded the area.

Kitai Gorod begins where Red Square ends. Settlement of this area began in the 12th century, around the time that the fortified city of Moscow was founded on Borovitsky Hill (the site of the present-day Kremlin). By the 14th century Kitai Gorod was a thriving trade district, full of shops and markets. At that time it was surrounded by earthen ramparts, which were replaced in the 16th century by a fortified wall, remnants of which still remain. As Moscow grew, so did Kitai Gorod.

At the time of the Bolshevik Revolution it was the city's most important financial and commercial district, with major banks, warehouses, and trading companies concentrated here. These days the multitude of shops, restaurants, and banks demonstrates the area's reasserted role as an energized commercial center.

A good starting point for your tour is Nikolskaya ulitsa, which begins at the corner opposite the Historical Museum and runs along the north side of GUM. If you are coming from St. Basil's, walk away from St. Basil's toward the Historical Museum alongside GUM. If you are coming from outside of Red Square, get to Nikolskaya by way of Teatralnaya Ploshchad (Theater Square). If you are standing with your back to the Bolshoi on this square, walk straight ahead, cross the street, and enter one of the narrow passageways to the right or left of the Teatralnaya metro station (as you are facing it). Taking a right out of either passageway will bring you to Nikolskaya ulitsa. Go a short way farther to the right, to the cobblestone edge of Red Square, to begin your walk.

Nikolskaya ulitsa, which is named after the Kremlin's Nikolskaya Gate Tower, is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. At the corner with Red Square is the Kazansky Sobor . Leaving the church, take a left to make your way through the teeming crowds of shoppers on Nikolskaya ulitsa to No. 7, the Zaikonospassky Monastyr , the former Slavonic-Greco-Latin Academy now undergoing a slow restoration. Farther down the street, also on the left-hand side, is a once brightly painted white-and-aqua building with an elaborate facade (No. 15). The building was erected in 1810-14 on the site of the 16th-century Pechatny Dvor (Printing Yard), where Russia's first printed book was assembled in 1553. Today the building houses the Moscow Institute of Historical Records and the Moscow Humanitarian University. Cross the street to go down Bogoyavlensky pereulok. Halfway down the block, opposite the entrance to the Ploshchad Revolutsii metro, is the Bogoyavlensky Sobor . Continue down the street to where it intersects with ulitsa Ilinka. Before the 1917 revolution this was Moscow's Wall Street, and it is still lined with the impressive facades of former banks.

On the left-hand corner stands the former Ryabushinsky Bank . As you cross the street, look to your right; ulitsa Ilinka leads directly to the Kremlin's Tower of the Savior. At No. 3 stands the Tserkov Svyatoi Ilii church from which the street takes its name. The church, which dates to 1520, is in disrepair except for its facade. Opposite the church is one of the border streets of the Gostinny Dvor merchant's arcade. Turn left and walk the length of Khrustalny pereulok to reach one of the oldest streets in Moscow, Varvarka ulitsa. The opposite side of the street is lined with quaint old churches and buildings, but the first thing you'll likely notice is the gray bulk of the massive, concrete-and-glass Rossiya, one of Europe's largest and most unattractive hotels.

At the farthest corner of the street, to your right, is the Tserkov Velikomuchenitsy Varvary . Adjacent is the English Court . Next comes the white-stone Tserkov Maksima Blazhennovo . The pointed bell tower situated just before the semicircle sidewalk leading to the upper-level entrance of the Rossiya hotel was once attached to the redbrick Znamensky Sobor on the other side of the sidewalk; with its foundation on the slope below, it is set back from the street. At No. 10 is the Palaty Romanovych v Zaryadye , believed to be the birthplace of Tsar Mikhail Romanov. Before leaving Varvarka ulitsa take note of the last church, the blue Tserkov Georgiya na Pskovskoy Gorke at No. 12.

If you stand to the left of the church (on the walkway leading to the Rossiya hotel) you can glimpse a remnant of Kitai Gorod's 16th-century brick fortification wall. It is to your left, opposite the hotel's eastern facade. Cross to the other side of Varvarka ulitsa and walk a short hop past the final church. Make a right and climb up the narrow Ipatevsky pereulok, which leads to several government and administrative buildings. At the top of the incline to the right is one of Moscow's best-preserved 17th-century churches, the Tserkov Troitsy v Nikitnikach .

Continue down the lane to the right of the church to reach Novaya Ploshchad, or New Square, which is more like a boulevard than a square. To your right, at the far bottom of the hill, Slavyanskaya Ploshchad opens up. At the bottom of the hill is the redbrick Tserkov Vsekh Svyatykh na Kulishkakh . From Novaya Ploshchad stroll for a long block or two past the government buildings, where the Central Committee of the Communist Party once sat. Now these buildings house the Duma of the Moscow Region. Soon you will come to the beginning of a busy intersection. To your right, in the median strip that divides Novaya Ploshchad, is a park that holds the Plevna Memorial, an octagonal, towerlike monument commemorating the Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Plevna in the Russo-Turkish War (1878). Keep walking up the street on the left side to go to the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy , a small museum on Moscow's history.

Note the building on the opposite side of the street that takes up the entire block. This is the Politekhnichesky Muzey , a museum of science and technology. Directly north of this museum is yet another museum, Muzey Mayakovskovo , which includes a re-creation of the study of the great revolutionary poet. A short distance from here, Novaya Ploshchad intersects with the circular Lubyanskaya Ploshchad , where you can behold the Lubyanka Prison and the former KGB headquarters, which now house the FSB -- the New Russia's federal security service. On the west side of the square is Detsky Mir, a large department store that used to specialize in toys but now carries all sorts of items.

Walk past Lubyanskaya Ploshchad to the west side, down to where it converges with the broad street of Teatralny proyezd, Moscow's most elite shopping street. On a side street to your right stands the ornate and luxurious Savoy hotel (3 Rozhdestvenka ulitsa), which, like the nearby Metropol hotel, was built in connection with the celebrations in the early 20th century honoring 300 years of the Romanov dynasty. On the left-hand side of the street you will pass a statue of Ivan Fyodorov, the printer who produced Russia's first book at the old Printing Yard on Nikolskaya ulitsa. The arched gateway just to the right of the statue links Teatralny proyezd with Nikolskaya ulitsa, the street on which you started the tour. Teatralny proyezd leads into Teatralnaya Ploshchad, site of three of Moscow's most important theaters.

Taking up the block on the southeast corner, the first building you will encounter to your left as you approach Teatralnaya Ploshchad is the Metropol , an art nouveau hotel. Reaching the square, you will see at the center a large monument to Karl Marx, carved on the spot from a 200-ton block of granite and unveiled in 1961. Across the boulevard stands the Bolshoi Theater , flanked on the left, on the corner farthest away from you, by the Central Children's Theater, and, to the right, by the Maly Theater . Turn left at the corner of the Metropol, and walk by the park and the hotel's main entrance. The large redbrick wall ahead is the other surviving remnant of the 16th-century fortification wall that once surrounded Kitai Gorod.

The wall has been heavily rebuilt, and a new tower has been added. Inside the tower are a couple of restaurants and bars. When you reach the Teatralnaya/Ploshchad Revolutsii metro station, take a moment to admire the exterior of the massive redbrick building on the corner -- the Muzey V. I. Lenina . If you still have some time but not much energy, consider hopping on Trolleybus 2, which can be caught at the bus stop opposite the Bolshoi Theater. The trolley ride takes about 45 minutes and makes a loop passing by Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, Ploshchad Pobedi (Victory Square -- note the obelisk topped by an angel), the Borodino Battle Panorama (in a circular blue pavilion), Kievsky vokzal (train station), the Novy Arbat, and Alexander Garden, before returning to Teatralnaya Ploshchad. You can purchase a ticket for 10R from the driver. Try to have exact change. Make sure to punch the ticket on board the bus.

Taken at a leisurely pace, with stops at least to glance at the interiors of the many churches along the route, this walk should take about five hours. If you intend to take a quick look at the exhibits in the museums along the way, you'll need an entire day. Both the Politekhnichesky Muzey and the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy are worth coming back to for a more leisurely look at their holdings.
