Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise Tour

Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise

We just finished 9 days on the Nile Jewel tour. The whole tour is well organised. We were met by a tour operator at the airport. Our tour guide for the trip Ramez was full of great knowledge and he was fun and friendly. Our group was small with just 10 people. We felt safe the whole time with Ramez and he kept us up to date with the itinerary. We packed alot in and there were a lot of early starts. The hotels were 3 star and they were clean & comfortable. The best accommodation we had was on the Nile Cruise ship. The food is buffet style in the hotels and on the boat, it is quite similar. There are also stops at different stores as well. We had a great trip and a good experience of Egypt.

Astonishing, glorious sites! The whole tour was professionally arranged. The archaeological sites were carefully planned. Each tour guide, experts all, were brilliant, patient and full of passion. We covered a whole lot of territory which made the schedule rather intense but well worth the lack of sleep. I highly recommend the additional excursions such as the hot air balloon ride, Abu Simbel, the visit to the Nubian Village and a day trip to Alexandria. I was very grateful that during the Nile Cruise portion of my trip, my guide was Mahmoud Noby, who communicated regularly about the schedule and took very special care of me. He even arranged a SIM card, as WiFi onboard Le Sarah is expensive and unreliable. Le Sarah is older and a wee bit shabby but still quite perfect for its purpose of cruising the mighty Nile. There were some issues, albeit minor, that are just part of touring. Everywhere in Egypt, people smoke; wine is impossible to find at restaurants and in the hotel and vain tourists take pouty selfies in front of every hieroglyph. My advice is just go with the flow because everything I saw is awe-inspiring. I am so grateful that I got to experience Egypt with "Beyond the Nile" tours.

9 Days Nile Jewel (Cairo, Cruise, Hurghada) Superior hotels

Unforgettable journey! They took care of everything, huge shout-out to our awesome guides Bassem and Ibrahim. Never felt rushed or unsafe. They offering amazing add-ons like camel ride, Luxor hot air balloon, Abu Simbel temple trip (a must-see), and more. For 9 days, we experienced so much—truly unforgettable! Treat yourself, spend the money, and live your life!

Holiday In Egypt 4 Days – 3 Nights Nile Cruise From Cairo by Flight Tour

Holiday In Egypt 4 Days – 3 Nights Nile Cruise From Cairo by Flight

Overall trip was enchanting. Large crowd, waiting in line and tipping is expected. Our tour guides are very professional and informative in conveying history to sites we visited. We understand that there are alloted time to where we visit, but maybe adding a little bit more minutes would be appreciated for us, travelers to really admire and take a good look at the historical sites. Pricing should have been more specified for how much entrance fees are paid upfront to each tour sites so miscommunication, trust issues and overpricing is avoided.Having to pay $160 vs $125 description on site is a big difference.$60 tipping upfront is also asked for drivers and boat crew. In most places we visited, sellers constantly ask for dollars $$ as cash for payment when buying their products. Wake up calls are different each day of the tour ranging from 0400am to 0800 am, tour is indeed stressful and compactly. Getting a sim card for Internet data at the airport and having some $$ US dollars for cash is advisable.

Best of Egypt

This tour exceeded my expectations. The arcahealolgical sites, tombs and temples from 1000s of years ago are just jaw dropping. And then there were the pyramids. Egypt is a very safe country with lovely people. This tour has a good itinerary filled with activities and our CEO/tour guide Said was just extraordinary. Accomodation and transport were very good too. Highly recommend this for anyone planning to see Egypt.

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Intra-Flights Included

We joined the tour as three people, my friend and my sister. We were welcomed as soon as we landed in Egypt in the middle of the night. Ahmed welcomed us at our hotel and helped us with early check-in. A smooth transfer was made by plane to Luxor. Our guide Ahmed Saladino welcomed us in Luxor. We spent 5 days with our guide Saladino. It went perfectly for us. Saladino was very knowledgeable and helpful in every aspect. Our balloon tour money, which was canceled due to wind, was refunded without any problems. Our group was quite harmonious. Many thanks to our guide Saladino, who did his best for us, and to tourradar and beyond the nile for the smooth organization. As soon as we were picked up from the airport, we were sent off from the airport with a warm farewell. The points I will criticize are; The ship is tired of years and unfortunately full of old materials. Even though the staff is devoted, this ship should definitely be better.

Timeless Tours is the kind of operator we were looking for when we started planning our Egypt tour - one who can customize a private tour for our family of four, engage and help in planning by providing quotes for different variations in the itinerary, suggest and guide with professionalism and empathy. Hany, the CEO, was a pleasure to work with right from the time I sent him the initial whatsapp message. He always responded with detailed and well-thought answers. His responses might not be immediate, but they were always within reasonable time frame. He was patient with my questions and flexible with my requests (like my desire to book my own hotels). During the trip, he provided Mina Magdy as the guide. All Hany's employees and driving staff have been exemplary. Mina, however, went above and beyond with personalized service. His knowledge of Egypt's history, attention towards my family's comfort and safety, as well as understanding of our need were all superlative. The price was reasonable, but the service was outstanding. I would hire Timeless again if needed!

Best Times to Take a Nile Cruise (Aswan–Luxor)

Best Times to Take a Nile Cruise (Aswan–Luxor)

Spring and autumn cruises are best, since you get warm sun, comfortable nights, and comfortable touring weather. For ideal temperatures we suggest that you go in the fall between the end of September to the end of November, or go in the spring from March to early May.

Summer is too hot for many and winter is too crowded for optimal cruise enjoyment. Seasonal weather analysis follows, best seasons first.

The weather is about the same in Luxor and Aswan because these two cities are only about 180 kilometers or 112 miles away from each other in a straight line. You could drive the distance in a little more than 3 hours. Aswan is further south and is generally a little warmer.

Spring Cruises (March to Early May Suggested)

In big contrast from the cold chills of January and the blasting heat of August, in March and April, in Aswan, the days are comfortable, dry, and sunny.  Daytime temperatures are about 31°C (88°F) or above, and at night, the temperatures drop to a comfortable low of about 13°C (55°F). There is 0% chance of rain.

In May, the temperatures become like summer. There is also a little more rainfall in Aswan. In Luxor, the weather ranges between a 39°C (103°F) and a low of 22°C (72°F). This is ideal weather for swimming in cruise ship pools. Note, there are larger tourist crowds around Easter.

What to Wear in Spring

During the days, remember that the solar radiation is intense. The sun shines off the water and from the cliffs or dunes along the shore. So, when you are on deck and go on excursion, try to cover your skin with loose and thin cotton fabric. Wear sunglasses and a sunhat. In the evenings, a light jacket should be enough.

Moisturizers and keeping hydrated are needed in the desert areas around Aswan and Luxor, as humidity is very low and it will feel dry. Cairo has more normal humidity, for if you cruise that far.

Autumn Cruises (October and November Suggested)

Fall is a good cruising season as well.  In the daytime in October, temperatures might reach a high of about 37°C (98°F), and then the temperatures continue to fall in November. The nightly lows might reach 21°C (69°F) in October. There is 0% chance of rain.

What to Wear in Autumn

During daytime, remember that the solar radiation is intense. Try to cover your skin with loose and thin cotton fabric or sun cream. Wear sunglasses and a sunhat. In the evenings, a light jacket should be enough. Again, keep well hydrated, and consider lip balm and moisturizer.

Summer Cruises (June–September) — Maybe Too Hot

June, July, and August are much the same:  dry, sunny and with average highs of 42°C (108°F) and lows of 25°C (78°F). It is hot, dry, and breezy. Most foreign tourists do not like the heat of Egyptian summers. If you like dry heat, then you might enjoy a summer cruise. The highs are in the 40s °C (middle 100s °F) and the lows at night are comfortable in the middle 20s °C (70s °F).

Septembers are hot.  The highs in September are still hot at around 41°C (105°F), but the nights are comfortable with lows of around 23°C (74°F).

What to Wear in Summer

Again, remember that the solar radiation is intense, and employ the protection mentioned above to protect your skin: clothing, hat, sun screen... Lip balm, moisturizer, and good hydration are highly advised.

Winter Cruises (December, January, February) — Very Popular

We suggest avoiding December, January, and February since they are too popular. For example, in January, the highs are a cool 24°C (75°F). This is cool for sunbathing and for outdoor sightseeing. The most pleasant weather is also the peak season when many travelers choose to travel to Egypt. Avoid the busy holidays of Christmas and New Year, because it is a high tourist season for cruises and may cost you more.

See our handpicked itineraries for various durations: 5 days , 7 days , 10 days , 12 days , 14 days and 21 days ...

What to Wear in Winter

Remember warm clothes for cruising in winter, especially coats and trousers for going on deck in the evenings and early mornings. There is less need for sun protection. Moisturizers and keeping hydrated are still needed in desert areas around Aswan and Luxor.

Humidity is higher in the winter, rising to 40%, but this is still on the dry side for most people, so take care of skin hydration as needed.

Sights along the Way between Aswan and Luxor

Main attractions in aswan.

  • The Aswan Dam:  It is a 20-minute drive south from Aswan. The dam is about 111 meters (364 feet) tall and 3 kilometers (2 miles) wide. It is one of the biggest dams in the world.
  • Philae Temple and Abu Simbel:  These two temples were moved to their present locations when the Aswan Dam was built.
  • Kom Ombo:  About 23 miles north of Aswan is a stone temple that was built in the period 180–47 BC. It is a stop for Nile cruises.

Main Attractions in the Temple of Edfu

As you are sailing north from Aswan, about 64 km (40 miles) north of Kom Ombo or 124 km (77 miles) north of Aswan, you can reach the Temple of Edfu. Boats dock and horses and carriages offer rides for customers. Some cruises stop both at Kom Ombo and Edfu. The Edfu necropolis is about three kilometers (2 miles) west of the west bank of the Nile.

Edfu is in an out of the way area about 115 kilometers (60 miles) south of Luxor, so seeing it by cruise boat is convenient. The Temple of Edfu and the Temple of Dendera are the most complete and the best-preserved ancient temple structures in Egypt.

Read more on: The Temple of Edfu: How to Visit It

Main Attractions in the Temple of Dendera

The Temple of Dendera is about 1½ hours from Luxor by road, about 60 km (40 miles) away. It is also visited by tourists during a Nile cruise, since it is only about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the Nile. If you take a cruise between Luxor and Aswan, many tours will also feature a trip to Dendera because it is very impressive and takes up an area of two city blocks. There are many things to see including a Roman Gateway of Domitian and Trajan, a Roman Mammisi, and the main building in the complex. It is noted for having original paintings and inscriptions that are still clear and colorful.

Main Attractions in the Temple of Esna

Further north along the Nile is the Temple of Esna. It's located about 100 meters (110 yards) west of the west bank. It is one of the newer temples that tourists visit. The temple was completed during the reign of Emperor Decius (249-–251 AD). There is a hall of columns, and recent archaeological work has uncovered some art and images that can now be seen. Most cruise boats stop there, except some tours traveling south from Luxor. It is about 55 minutes from Luxor by vehicle.

Main Attractions in Luxor

  • Luxor Temple:  It is thought that construction started in the 14th century BC. The construction was continued by Ramses II. There are huge pylons and obelisks. The Luxor Temple is about 3 km (2 miles) from Karnak Temple. Both Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple are on the east side of the Nile.
  • Karnak Temple: It is a big collection of ruins, ancient buildings, statues, and obelisks that were built over a thousand-year period. It is a huge place. The Hypostyle Hall consists of 134 columns. Ramses II is thought to have built most of the hall. The Obelisk of Hatshepsut is the second biggest of all the ancient Egyptian obelisks, and it is about 30 meters (98 feet) tall. The historical inscriptions are important. The conquest of Israel is listed in detail.
  • Hot Air Balloon:  This is a great way to get a grand view of the whole Valley of the Kings at one time. There, you see the Queen Hatshepsut mortuary in front of a big cliff. If the winds are right, you see the Colossi of Memnon too. These flights usually leave at or before dawn, and they last about an hour. People enjoy seeing the whole region including the sugarcane fields.

For ballooning, the best time of year is from November  to March . The mornings are cold in the late fall, winter, and early spring, and the higher altitude and breezes are cold. Be sure to bring a good warm coat and warm hat if you are flying in the cold weather.

For more information, see Tips for Taking the Hot Air Balloons in Luxor.

A Night at the Bazaar

The famous medieval marketplace that is the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar is a must-visit for travelers to Cairo. Made up of a seemingly endless system of tight alleyways overflowing with textiles, spices, lanterns, and more, you can easily spend hours here. Get the most out of your visit by going with a local guide, and cap off your evening at the bazaar by sitting for Egyptian tea at a local cafe.

The ancient quarter of Cairo is intense—the colors, the sounds, the density of people—and it’s likely been this way for thousands of years. Your local expert will show you a 12th-century citadel, the beautiful Alabaster Mosque and an unsurpassed collection of priceless artifacts, including mind-boggling treasures once buried with the boy king Tutankhamen.

Your tour of this historic city includes a visit to the Citadel of Salah al-Din, a massive compound containing mosques and museums and offering breathtaking views of Cairo. Founded in the seventh century by Arab conquerors, the Fatimid dynasty rulers made Cairo their capital and named it al-Qahira (“the Victorious”). The great sultan Salah al-Din built his citadel in the 12th century as a government center and bulwark against invading armies of Crusaders. Located high above the eastern end of Cairo on El-Moqattam Hill, the citadel was the home of Egypt’s rulers for more than 700 years and is one of the oldest attractions in the city.

After the Ottoman ruler Muhammad Ali seized power in the 1800s, he restored the walls of the citadel and built numerous palaces, schools and government buildings inside. His masterpiece was the great Alabaster Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, which you’ll have an opportunity to visit. Its two slender minarets were Muhammad Ali’s declaration of independence from Istanbul, as Ottoman law decreed that only a sultan could build a mosque with two minarets. The mosque’s expansive Turkish-style interior is lit by a beautiful array of lamps suspended from the intricately decorated ceiling.

You’ll also visit the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, established in 1900 and by far the most impressive collection of Egyptian antiquities and pharaonic treasures in the world. Located in the heart of Cairo, the museum displays an astonishing number of objects. Ancient Egyptian history began with the founding of the Old Kingdom around 3100 BC and lasted 3,000 years, until Alexander the Great conquered the country in 332 BC and ended the rule of the pharaohs. The museum’s galleries are laid out in roughly chronological order as you move clockwise along the ground floor.

Note: Photography of any kind is forbidden inside the museum, including digital cameras, cell phones and camcorders.

Luxor

Prepare to be amazed at the legendary Temple of Karnak, a massive and absolutely astounding site, with gigantic columns, broad avenues lined with stone sphinxes and halls of truly epic proportions. This evening, you’ll revel in a Welcome Reception and Dinner onboard.

Note: Flights to Luxor depart early in the morning to take advantage of more favorable weather and traffic conditions, and to optimize tour scheduling.

Before dinner onboard this evening, guests will be treated to a folkloric dance performance. A local band of dancers, in traditional costumes representing different Egyptian districts, will perform a Whirling Dervish show.

After a short flight to Luxor on the east bank of the Nile, you can stroll through the grand avenues of sphinxes and halls of gigantic columns of the magnificent Temple of Karnak. This vast complex, situated about 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) from the Temple of Luxor, was originally established during the Middle Kingdom (1991-1633 BC), and various dynasties over the next 1,300 years continued to expand it. Karnak is a massive and simply astounding site, reflecting the combined achievements of many generations of ancient builders—as many as 80,000 laborers took part in its creation during the 19th Dynasty alone.

Buried under sand for a thousand years, the UNESCO- designated Karnak complex is composed of three main temples, smaller enclosed temples and several outer temples. The largest of these is dedicated to Amun, a great pharaonic god. Enter the main compound, the Precinct of Amun, through the Great Court, and continue on to the dazzling Great Hypostyle Hall—sometimes called the Hall of Columns—an imposing forest of 134 enormous sandstone columns in the form of papyrus stalks.

Later, you’ll board the magnificent S.S. Sphinx or the elegant River Tosca and set sail for beautiful Dendera. Enjoy a Gala Reception and dinner onboard this evening.

Dendera, Cruising the Nile River, Luxor

Dendera

Like its twin shrine, the Temple of Karnak, the Temple of Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, the once flourishing capital of Egypt’s New Kingdom. It was built over hundreds of years and even in ruins it is still an extraordinary place. You’ll also visit the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the goddess of love and beauty.

The temple dates to Egypt’s Ptolemaic era, when the heirs of Alexander the Great ruled over Egypt and adopted Egyptian culture and religion as their own. Built between 125 BC and AD 65, it is one of the best-preserved temples in all of Egypt and features a rare bas-relief of Cleopatra with Caesarion, the son she bore to Julius Caesar.

Enter the temple through the great pylon—a ceremonial gateway—where two enormous statues of Ramses II still stand, along with a pink granite obelisk (its mate stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris, France). Continue on to an enormous interior courtyard, where the Abu Haggag Mosque once stood atop the ruins of the temple. You can still see a ghostly remnant of the mosque on the east side of the courtyard, high above the columns, its arched doorway opening into thin air.

The temple’s chief architects were Amenhotep III (Egypt’s “Sun King,” also known as Amenophis III) and Ramses II, and it was constructed over hundreds of years, beginning around 1400 BC. It was dedicated to the “father of all life,” the god Amun, sometimes referred to as Amon or Amon-Ra. Ancient Egyptians came to the temple to pay tribute to this god during the Opet Festival, celebrated during the annual flooding of the Nile. Once a year, a great feast was held and the statue of Amun was transported via a small sailboat from the Temple of Karnak to the Temple of Luxor. (Stages of the festival are depicted in friezes along the Temple of Karnak’s grand processional colonnade, the construction of which was started by Amenhotep III and finished by his grandson, Tutankhamen.)

At the rear of the temple is the Sun Court of Amenhotep III, as well as the Bark Shrine that was rebuilt by Alexander the Great (who is depicted bare-chested on the walls). The Luxor Temple complex is at its most stunning at sunset, when it is illuminated with the golden glow of the setting sun.

Luxor, Cruising the Nile River, Kom Ombo

The word “colossal” will take on a whole new meaning after today’s excursion to the gigantic twin statues known as the Colossi of Memnon. And that’s just the beginning—you’ll also visit the temple of one of Egypt’s rare female pharaohs as well as the Valley of the Kings, used as a royal burial place for nearly 500 years and where the mummified remains of Tutankhamen are on display.

After dinner onboard tonight, guests will enjoy a Galabeya Party with music, dancing and singing by crew members. Guests are encouraged to bring their own Galabeya clothing.

Get an up-close view of two gigantic statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, better known as the Colossi of Memnon. Sixty feet (18 meters) tall and gazing eastward toward the rising sun, the statues depict Amenhotep seated on his throne. Carved next to his legs are his mother and his wife, with side panels depicting the god of the Nile, Hapi. The figures originally sat in front of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III and are believed to have surpassed even Karnak in size. Unfortunately, the temple itself was slowly dismantled over the centuries to provide building materials for new temples; the twin Colossi continue to stand guard nonetheless, just as they have done for the past 3,400 years.

The Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri is another highlight today. One of Egypt’s rare female pharaohs, Hatshepsut is considered by historians to have been one of the most successful rulers of ancient Egypt. Both the setting and the construction of her temple make it unique among the landmarks of Egypt; built into the face of steep cliffs at the basin, the temple is made of limestone instead of sandstone, unlike any other funerary temples of the New Kingdom period. Hatshepsut’s successor, Thutmose III, attempted to remove her name from the temple, and many images of the queen were damaged or destroyed during his reign.

You’ll also visit one of the most famous archeological sites in the world—the remote and barren Valley of the Kings, used for royal burials for nearly 500 years. Much of our understanding of Egyptian mythology has been garnered from these ancient chambers, located about four miles (seven kilometers) inland on the west bank of the Nile. It was here that the bodies of great pharaohs such as Ramses II and Thutmose III were once laid to rest and where the mummified remains of the boy king Tutankhamen are still on display. The idea for establishing this royal burial ground is thought to have originated with Thutmose I, who opted to conceal his tomb far from his mortuary temple in an effort to deter tomb robbers. Subsequent pharaohs did the same, changing a tradition that had endured for close to 2,000 years.

Within the tombs and along the walls of the Valley of the Kings, inscriptions from the Book of the Dead provided instructions on how the pharaohs could safely journey to the next world and avoid the dangers that lay on the way. For the sake of preservation, only a handful of the most interesting tombs are open to visitors at any given time.

Return to the ship and set sail for Kom Ombo. Tonight, don your galabeya (traditional Egyptian attire, samples of which will be available for purchase onboard if you’d like to participate but didn’t bring your own) for a festive onboard party featuring traditional Egyptian music.

Aswan

Today is an epic day, filled with wonders from start to finish. You’ll visit a marvel of modern engineering—the Aswan High Dam—as well as the Unfinished Obelisk and the beautiful Philae Temple complex, which was moved from one island to another back in the 1970s. But wait, there’s more. You’ll also take a ride in a  felucca —a traditional Egyptian sailboat—and enjoy afternoon tea at a famous hotel depicted in Agatha Christie’s novel  Death on the Nile .

You’ll also visit the Unfinished Obelisk, commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut yet never completed due to a flaw discovered in the stone. If completed, it would have been the largest and heaviest obelisk ever attempted, weighing more than two million pounds (907,185 kilograms).

Another highlight today is the beautiful Philae Temple complex, originally situated on the island of Philae. It was painstakingly transferred to the island of Agilika after the construction of the Aswan High Dam to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, a daunting UNESCO-funded endeavor that took 10 years to complete. The three principal monuments on the island all date from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods—the Kiosk of Trajan, the Temple of Hathor and the Temple of Isis.

Note: Guests are welcome to climb around the Unfinished Obelisk, but please note the climb is physically demanding.

Today you will sail serenely down the Nile in a felucca — a small traditional boat with large triangular sails—a wonderful way to experience the river as Egyptians have for a thousand years. Later, relax over tea at the historic Old Cataract Hotel Aswan, a colonial-era gem that counts Winston Churchill and Princess Diana among its former guests. This famous hotel was depicted in Agatha Christie’s acclaimed mystery novel Death on the Nile .

Note: Feluccas are wind-powered and thus will operate only if weather conditions permit.

Philae - Sound & Light show

While many visit Philae Temple to explore the during daylight hours, tonight guests will take advantage of an entertaining and educational option instead—the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show.

In order to save the temple from the rising waters of the lake, a massive operation went underway...

In order to save the temple from the rising waters of the lake, a massive operation went underway to physically move the temple to higher ground, and today, Philae Temple stands on nearby Agilkia Island. This achievement in itself makes the area worth visit. When you see the temple standing today, it really is astounding to think than the entire complex was actually moved from one location to another.

This magical show gives guests an approach to the island after sunset on the water. The lights of the temple and other buildings on the island reflect back from the surrounding waters, and when the show begins it is told by actors dramatically playing the roles of Isis and Osiris. Guests get to learn about the temple itself, and the history of the site, but they also learn a great deal about this popular story from the Ancient Egyptian lore. The show also uses special lighting and sound effects to add to the drama, sure to give an overall fascinating experience.

Aswan, Cruising the Nile River, Edfu

Spend the day at leisure or join us for an optional excursion to see the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel.

Temples of Abu Simbel

The Temples of Abu Simbel were constructed by King Ramses II—one of Egypt’s most celebrated Kings. Built in 1244 B.C., Abu Simbel sat on the west bank of the Nile River for 3,000 years. In the 1960s, the entire temple complex was dismantled and rebuilt on a higher hill to accommodate Aswan High Dam—a remarkable effort co-operated by the Egyptian government and UNESCO. Today, the temples are still one of the most recognizable ancient sites in Egypt. From Aswan, you will take a short flight to Abu Simbel. Once arriving on site, your guide will give you a history of the temple. Afterwards, take time to marvel at the exquisite detail as you wander through the temples yourself. Don’t forget to take pictures! You will then take a flight back to Aswan.

Esna, Cruising the Nile River, Luxor

Esna

On today’s excursion, you’ll learn how the Temple of Esna was buried under debris for many centuries and is one of the last great Egyptian temples ever built. Your Egyptologist guide will share all sorts of fascinating insights about this significant cultural site and show you the façade bearing the last known hieroglyphic inscriptions ever recorded in Egypt.

Temple of Khnum

The Late Roman Temple of Esna lies on the west bank of the Nile about 34 miles (55 kilometers) south of Luxor. The Late Roman Temple of Esna lies on the west bank of the Nile about 34 miles (55 kilometers) south of Luxor. Buried under debris for many centuries, the temple is just a short walk from the ship through the local market. It dates from the Ptolemaic and Roman period (180 BC to AD 251) and is one of the last Egyptian temples ever built. Visitors can see two large inscriptions praising Khnum, the ram-headed god of creation, who fashioned mankind on a potter’s wheel from the clay mud of the Nile. There’s also a hypostyle hall with 24 pillars and a ceiling depicting Egyptian astronomical figures and Roman zodiac signs. On the temple’s western wall, look for images of Horus, the god of victory, and Khnum, dragging a net full of fish. At the foot of this façade are the last known hieroglyphic inscriptions ever recorded in Egypt.

Luxor (Disembark), Fly to Cairo

Disembark in Luxor and transfer to the airport for your return flight to Cairo. Then, check in to your luxury hotel where you’ll have time to relax before dinner.

Note: Flights to Cairo depart early in the morning to take advantage of more favorable weather and traffic conditions, and to optimize tour scheduling.

National Museum of Egyptian Culture

Hatshepsut, the most powerful female Pharaoh of all time, and the expansionist Thutmose the Great boast two of Ancient Egypt's most enduring legacies. They can also both be seen today on a tour of The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), amongst 18 other royal mummies displayed in the Hall of Mummies. Step back in time with your expert guide on a visit to this awe-inspiring museum to learn about the evolution of Egyptian civilization from pre-historic times to the modern day.

Grand Egyptian Museum Trial Visit

The Grand Egyptian Museum—or the “GEM”—is set to be the largest archeological museum in the world. For now, much of the highly anticipated museum has yet to open to the public. In the meantime, however, you can join a “trial phase” tour of the main hall, which houses the colossal statue of Pharaoh Ramesses II, as well as the museum store.

It’s a day of Bucket List Moments today as we venture to Ancient Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a number of amazing monuments to see—including the enigmatic Great Sphinx. Venture forth to Ancient Memphis, the capital of Egypt’s Old Kingdom and now a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing a number of extraordinary monuments. You’ll see the colossal statue of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx, as well as the Step Pyramid of King Zoser (or Djoser) in nearby Sakkara, the oldest pyramid in the world and the prototype for all subsequent pyramids. The ancient architect and sage Imhotep initially designed the pyramid as a single story, then later added five more levels and covered the structure with a shell of fine limestone. In front of the pyramid, Imhotep built a stone structure containing a wooden box with two peepholes; peer inside and you’ll see a life-size painted statue of King Zoser. The peepholes were created to allow the king’s ka (life spirit) to communicate with the outside world.

At the Giza Necropolis, the face of ancient Egypt—the Great Sphinx—awaits your visit. With the body of a crouching lion and the head of a man, it is the largest monolith statue in the world. Experts believe that the Sphinx (known to the early Arabs as Abu al-Hol, “Father of Terror”) was built in the 26th century BC during Khafre’s reign, perhaps as a portrait of the pharaoh himself. Unfortunately, much of this monument has either eroded or been deliberately destroyed over the years. Some of its facial features are no longer intact, such as the beard and the nose—the latter of which was not shot off by Napoleon’s soldiers, as widely believed, but chiseled away many centuries earlier. A number of excavations in modern times have removed the sand that built up around the Sphinx over the centuries and kept much of it buried. Despite its timeworn condition, the Sphinx still kneels gracefully as it has for thousands of years, looking toward the east with an enigmatic smile.

Today you’ll also visit the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the Pyramids of Giza. Beholding these legendary structures up close lets you appreciate their stone masonry and awe-inspiring architectural precision. Until as recently as the 19th century, the oldest and largest of the three pyramids—Khufu—was the tallest building in the world; when it was completed around the 26th century BC, it stood about 50 stories high.

nile cruise january

Many thanks for great information!

nile cruise january

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

Egypt cruises on Nile River and Lake Nasser are of those experiences imperative to take at least once in a lifetime. Nile River has been the lifeline of Egypt since ancient times and the best way to trace the passage of Egypt's history is to follow the course of the river.

Nile cruise itineraries are between the ports of Luxor and Aswan . River cruising is a comfortable, luxury hotel-style way to visit Upper Egypt's archaeological sites. Most voyages on the river depart from Cairo and last between 3 and 7 days (round-trips), rarely over a week. Longer itineraries offer additional hotel stays in both embarkation / disembarkation ports, but also in the companies' privately owned hotel and resort properties located on Egypt's Red Sea coast - in or near the resort towns and port cities Sharm El Sheikh , Hurghada , El Gouna, El Quseir, Makadi Bay, Sokhna (55 km / 35 mi south of Suez ).

Egypt Nile river cruises - CruiseMapper

Nile-based cruise ships - the very boats cruising the mighty river - are generally larger in comparison to typical river cruise ships, for example, to those sailing on European waterways. Each vessel accommodates up to 200 passengers. Similar sized (bigger) riverboats can be only deployed on wider inland waterways, such as Yangtze (in China), or Mississippi (in the USA).

Lake Nasser and Nile river cruises in Egypt

The Nile is a major river in northeastern Africa. This very special north-flowing waterway is generally regarded as the longest in the world at 4258 ml (6853 km). The resources of the Nile are shared by eleven countries, and the river is also the primary water source of Sudan and Egypt.

The Greek historian Herodotus once wrote that "Egypt was the gift of the Nile". Being a precious source of sustenance, Nile provided a crucial role in the evolution of Egyptian civilization. As the river played such an important role, even the ancient calendar was based on the 3 cycles of Nile.

To sail these life-giving waters, surrounded by millennia-old sites, is an unforgettable experience through Egypt’s heritage. Step back in time to explore the ancient wonders of the Great Hypostyle Hall of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Luxor, as well as temples devoted to Egypt's pantheon of gods and goddesses.

Colourful bazaars, ancient temples, and pyramids, that were already ancient by the time of Cleopatra, only begin to mark the highlights of the unique cruising vacation on Nile River through Egypt. Itineraries commonly include tours of landmarks in Aswan, Cairo, and Luxor, as well as visits to solitary temples, such as Abu Simbel . The Nile River cruise offers plenty of tours, but there is also time to relax while watching this ancient world float by.

What to Pack for a Nile Cruise in January 2024

What to Pack for a Nile Cruise

Packing for a Nile cruise in January can be tricky, as the weather can vary depending on the month’s time. However, you can keep a few general things in mind to ensure you’re comfortable and prepared for your trip.

  • Temperatures: In general, January is considered to be the coolest month on the Nile, with average highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 25 degrees Celsius) and lows in the mid-50s Fahrenheit (about 10 degrees Celsius). However, it can be significantly colder at night, especially in the desert regions.
  • Clothing: Pack layers of clothing to adjust to the changing temperatures. A long-sleeved shirt or sweater is good for evenings and early mornings, while shorts and T-shirts are perfect for the daytime. You may also want to pack a swimsuit, as many Nile cruise boats have pools.
  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you’ll be doing a lot of exploring. You may also want to pack a pair of sandals for the evenings.
  • Hat: A hat is a must-have to protect you from the sun.
  • Sunscreen: Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, even in the winter. The sun can be strong in Egypt, and you don’t want to get burned.
  • Sunglasses: Good sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun.
  • Camera: You’ll want to capture all the amazing sights on your Nile cruise, so don’t forget to pack your camera.
  • Binoculars: A pair of binoculars is a great way to get a closer look at the wildlife along the Nile.
  • Guidebook: A good guidebook can help you learn more about the places you visit on your cruise.
  • Personal items: Don’t forget to pack your items, such as your toothbrush, toothpaste, medications, and any other essentials you need.
  • Money: You’ll need Egyptian pounds for your trip. You can exchange currency at the airport or at your hotel.
  • Electrical adapter: If you’re coming from a country with a different electrical outlet, you’ll need to pack an adapter.
  • Gifts: If you plan on shopping, you may want to pack some small gifts for your friends and family back home.

What to Pack for a Nile Cruise in February 2024

What to Pack for a Nile Cruise

Packing for a Nile cruise in February is similar to packing for January, as the weather is still mild. However, there are a few key differences to keep in mind.

  • Temperatures: February is generally a bit warmer than January, with average highs in the upper 70s Fahrenheit (around 27 degrees Celsius) and lows in the low 50s Fahrenheit (around 11 degrees Celsius).
  • Clothing: You can still pack layers but focus more on lighter-weight clothing. A long-sleeved shirt or sweater is still good for evenings, but you may not need it as often. Shorts and T-shirts are perfect for most of the day. You’ll want to pack a swimsuit, as the weather is warm enough for swimming most days.
  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes are still essential, but you may also want to pack a pair of sandals for the evenings.

Here are some additional tips for packing for your Nile cruise in February:

Pack for sunshine! February is one of the sunniest months on the Nile, so don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If you’re planning on doing any excursions, be sure to pack appropriate clothing and footwear. For example, if you’re visiting the Valley of the Kings, you must wear shoes that cover your toes and ankles. Don’t forget to pack a good book or two. You’ll have plenty of time to relax and read on your cruise. A small flashlight can be handy for late-night walks on the deck. Pack some insect repellent, just in case.
