ISLAMABAD (AP) — A top official of the Pakistan Cricket Board will travel to India on Thursday after getting assurances that his country’s journalists and fans will get visas for the Cricket World Cup.

Zaka Ashraf, chairman of the PCB management committee, will watch the marquee game between Pakistan and India in Ahmedabad on Saturday at the 134,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium.

“I am traveling tomorrow after receiving confirmation that our journalists have been asked to submit their passports (at the Indian High Commission) for the mega event,” Ashraf told reporters in Lahore on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the PCB said it was “extremely disappointment” that visas had been delayed for Pakistani journalists and fans, asking both the International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India to expedite the process.

Ashraf also met with top officials of the foreign ministry in Islamabad to resolve the matter.

“I am happy that my conversation with the foreign office helped in achieving a positive result and now Pakistani journalists will get their visas,” Ashraf said.

Political tensions between the two countries meant India played its recent Asia Cup games in Sri Lanka after refusing to travel to Pakistan for the tournament.

Ashraf talked with the BCCI’s secretary Jay Shah over telephone on Wednesday and was given assurance that Pakistani fans will soon also start getting their visas.

Around 50 Pakistani journalists are accredited for the Cricket World Cup with the ICC and some of them have already received a call from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to submit their passport for a visa.

The Pakistan team received its visas less than 36 hours before it was due to fly to Hyderabad via Dubai last month.

The delay in the issuing of the players’ visa forced the PCB to cancel a brief training camp in Dubai and the team flew straight to Hyderabad.

Pakistan started the World Cup with two thumping victories against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

“I am pleased with the way the players have performed so far in the World Cup,” Ashraf said. “The entire nation stand firmly behind the players for a successful campaign. I am traveling to India to motivate the team and my message to them before the India contest will be to play fearlessly as they have been playing throughout the event.”

Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team receives government approval to travel to India for 2023 ODI World Cup

Pakistan's men's cricket team will travel to india for the 2023 odi world cup, the country's foreign ministry confirmed on sunday..

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Sunday that the country's men's cricket team will travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup. In a statement, the foreign ministry stated that the “bilateral relations” with India will not hamper Pakistan cricket's international obligations.

“Pakistan has consistently maintained that sports should not be mixed with politics. It has, therefore, decided to send its Cricket Team to India to participate in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023,” a statement from the foreign ministry read.

“Pakistan believes that the state of bilateral relations with India should not stand in the way of fulfilling its international sports-related obligations.”

Interestingly, the ODI World Cup succeeds the Asia Cup which, originally, was scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan. However, with BCCI's refusal to send the Indian team to the country, Sri Lanka were picked as co-hosts for the continental tournament with all of India's games scheduled in the island country. In its statement, the foreign ministry didn't fail to remind India of the act.

“Pakistan’s decision shows its constructive and responsible approach vis-à-vis India’s intransigent attitude, as the latter had refused to send its Cricket Team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup,” the statement read.

In the past few weeks, Pakistan officials had travelled to different venues where the side is scheduled to play in World Cup games to check security arrangements. This will be the first time when a Pakistan men's team will travel to India since the 2016 T20 World Cup. The last time Pakistan played a bilateral series on Indian soil was in December 2012-January 2013, which, incidentally, was also the last series between the two countries. Since then, the meetings between both nations have been confined to continental (Asia Cup) and global (World Cup, Champions Trophy) tournaments.

This year, though, the fans are in for a big dose of India-Pakistan games; both sides can potentially meet thrice in the Asia Cup, and are also grouped together in ‘Group A’ of the tournament. In the World Cup, both sides are scheduled to meet on October 15 in Ahmedabad; however, there might be a change of date for the clash due to security reasons.

Will Pakistan visit India for ODI World Cup 2023?

Schedule for tournament still to be announced with less than four months to go.

The ODI World Cup in India is less than four months away but there is still a lack of clarity over many crucial aspects, causing anxiety among cricket fans.

For starters, the schedule of the tournament has yet to be announced, which in itself is a significant matter. The schedules for previous two World Cups were announced over a year in advance, allowing fans to sort out travel plans. That's not going to happen this time.

Also, there is the bigger issue of Pakistan visiting India for the World Cup.

The South Asian neighbours had been locked in a standoff over scheduling of major games, with India first refusing to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup and then Pakistan also expressing their unwillingness to visit India for the showpiece event.

This week, a breakthrough of sorts was achieved when Pakistan were announced as co-hosts of the 50-over Asia Cup along with Sri Lanka in August-September, clearing the decks for the team in green's possible participation in the tournament in October-November.

A draft schedule of the tournament was recently sent by the Indian cricket board to the governing ICC (International Cricket Council), and then on to various cricket boards. It has yet to be approved.

Will Pakistan travel to India for the World Cup?

Pakistan board chief Najam Sethi said he is yet to receive approval from the government for the tournament.

The veteran administrator said the decision will be made by the government after consultation with other federal authorities.

“We have written to the ICC that we can’t give approval or disapproval to this schedule,” Sethi said in Lahore.

“It’s our government who has to decide, just like when it comes to India, it’s their government that decides when they go to play.

“When the time comes, first, the government will decide whether we are going or not, then the government decides where we will play. Our decision will rest on these two important conditions.”

However, there are strong indications that Pakistan will travel to India for the World Cup.

Will India v Pakistan take place in Ahmedabad?

According to reports, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is likely to host the blockbuster match between the neighbours. The 132,000-capacity venue would most likely attract a world record crowd for the game, if approved.

There were reports of Pakistan being unwilling to play in Ahmedabad – the biggest city in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat.

However, now there is belief that the game will take place at the venue.

Pakistani fans ‘clueless’ about Indian visas as match tickets go to waste

Match ticket-holding Pakistani cricket fans await a ‘visa policy’ from India as the ICC Cricket World Cup enters its second week.

pakistan cricket fan

Cricket fans in Pakistan have been left ruing their fate after being unable to travel to India for the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup  due to a lack of clarity on acquiring Indian visas.

Several match ticket holders told Al Jazeera that their money spent on the tickets will go to waste as the Indian High Commission in Pakistan has still not announced a visa policy for match ticket holders from Pakistan – even though the tournament began on October 5 and India will play Pakistan this Saturday in the biggest match in cricket.

“We are not eligible for a refund as we fall under the ‘no show’ category,” Umer Faizan, a cricket fan who had tickets to Pakistan’s first two matches of the tournament, told Al Jazeera from Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.

“The tournament has been under way for nearly a week but there is still no visa policy for Pakistani fans,” he said.

Given the bitter ties between the two countries, the visa-seeking process is long and tedious and often requires background security checks from government security agencies on both sides, which can cause long delays.

Pakistanis planning to travel to India for special events, such as the World Cup, are asked to apply under special visa policies that are created to cater to match ticket holders and journalists covering such events.

Faizan bought the tickets in a pre-sale offer in August, nearly two months ahead of his team’s first match on October 6.

“I bought the tickets with three other friends and it was going to be a trip of a lifetime for us to go watch our team in India, but we have no information on how to get an Indian visa.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) says it has raised “serious concerns and alarm” over the dilemma faced by fans and journalists and conveyed the message to the Indian government via a long-winded diplomatic route.

“PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf has asked Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Syrus Sajjad Qazi to take up the issue with India’s Home Ministry through Pakistan High Commission Office in New Delhi,” the board said in a statement this week.

Pakistan and India have downgraded diplomatic relations following the tensions emanating from the 2019 attacks in Indian-administered Kashmir and India’s retaliatory cross-border air attacks on what it called “terrorist training camps”.

On Wednesday, the PCB said Pakistani journalists had been asked to submit their passports to obtain visas after Ashraf’s “conversation with the foreign office helped in achieving a positive development”.

Earlier, Pakistani journalists were asked by the ICC to “submit” their questions for Pakistan’s post-match press conferences via WhatsApp messages to PCB’s media team who will read them out to the cricket team’s representatives.

In 2011, India co-hosted the tournament with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and several Pakistani fans and journalists were able to travel across the border for their team’s semifinal against their neighbouring country.

Sana Kazmi, a well-travelled die-hard Pakistan fan, watched the semifinal in Mohali in 2011 but has cancelled her plans to cross the border this time.

“In 2011, the Indian visa website was a complete nightmare to navigate but at least we got through in the end,” she said.

“This time, we aren’t able to access the website at all.”

Kazmi and her two friends crossed into India from the Wagah-Attari border hours ahead of the 2011 India-Pakistan semifinal.

When they needed help finding tickets and booking a hotel room, complete strangers from across the border saw Kazmi’s pleas for help on social media and stepped in to ensure Pakistani fans got help.

“If Pakistani fans or journalists post anything on social media about the difficulties they are facing in travelling to India for this World Cup, they receive crude and insulting responses from Indians,” Kazmi said.

A Pakistani fan who has tickets to the tournament’s marquee clash at Ahmedabad on Saturday said he has all but given up on being able to watch it at the world’s biggest cricket stadium.

“I spent thousands of [Pakistani] rupees to get my hands on ticket, but it will all go to waste as I have no hopes of getting a visa in time,” he told Al Jazeera, requesting anonymity.

“I have tried reaching out to government officials in Islamabad but they are as clueless about the visa process as us.”

Pakistani media and fans are not allowed to visit India for #WorldCup2023 – this is just appointment, no visa policy announced by Indian authorities for the World Cup, we have to rely on Indian media for the stories of Pakistani cricket team and then there are empty stadiums. — Shiraz Hassan (@ShirazHassan) October 6, 2023

India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2022

World Cup 2023: Will Pakistan travel to India? What PCB, ICC say

The much-awaited ICC World Cup 2023 schedule was recently released but the suspense over Pakistan’s participation in the quadrennial showpiece event continues.

Also read: Sri Lanka qualify for World Cup 2023

Due to political tensions, India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral cricket series since 2012 and only face each other in ICC tournaments. The last meeting between the two was in Melbourne, Australia during the T20 World Cup 2022.

This year’s Asia Cup will be played in a hybrid model after India refused to travel to Pakistan. India will now play their matches in Sri Lanka.

Also read: World Cup 2023: Ahmedabad to host India vs Pakistan clash on October 15

India’s last visit to the neighbouring country was in 2008 for Asia Cup, and Pakistan have not travelled to India since 2016 when they played the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan’s World Cup fixtures

On Tuesday (June 27), the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the ODI World Cup 2023 fixtures in Mumbai with 10 venues in India set to host the 10-team tournament from October 5 to November 19.

As per the schedule, Pakistan are set to play their nine league games in five cities – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

They will play two games each in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata while the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will be the scene for the blockbuster India versus Pakistan clash on October 15.

Even before the ICC finalised the World Cup fixtures, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had raised concerns over playing against certain opponents in Bengaluru and Chennai, and also about facing India in Ahmedabad, when it received the draft schedule from the ICC.

PCB did not want to play Afghanistan on a spin-friendly track in Chennai and also wanted to avoid facing Australia in Bengaluru. But the ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rejected PCB’s request and have scheduled Pakistan’s games against Australia and Afghanistan in Bengaluru (October 20) and Chennai (October 23) respectively.

According to ESPNcricinfo , in an internal note, the PCB had said, “Australia in Bengaluru and Afghanistan in Chennai are the two which we should look to get changed as much as possible. Ideally, we can switch these around. Australia in Chennai and Afghanistan in Bengaluru would make us obvious favourites in both matches.”

“India in Ahmedabad will be advantageous to them, but I doubt that’s going to change considering what that venue means for the BCCI and what this match means for the World Cup,” it added.

The ICC also made it clear that if Pakistan qualify for the World Cup 2023 semi-finals, then they will play in Kolkata and not in Mumbai.

Also read: World Cup 2023: Team-wise full schedule, venues, match start times

“If Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals, they will play in Kolkata. If India qualify for the semi-finals, they will play in Mumbai unless playing against Pakistan, in which case they will play in Kolkata,” the ICC said.

The decision not to allot any World Cup game involving Pakistan in Mumbai is due to security concerns. In the past, the Shiv Sena party had not allowed the Pakistan cricket team to play any matches, and in 1991 Shiv Sena workers had dug up the Wankhede Stadium pitch before an India-Pakistan contest.

Even if Pakistan wants to request a change of venue, it can only be done for security reasons. When Pakistan were in India for the T20 World Cup in 2016, their game against the hosts was changed from Dharamsala to Kolkata due to security concerns.

Last month, the PCB chairman Najam Sethi demanded World Cup be played in a hybrid model just like the Asia Cup. He wanted Pakistan to play all their matches at a neutral venue – Bangladesh.

“If India now wants to have a neutral venue (for Asia Cup) and accepts the hybrid model, then we’ll use the same hybrid model in the World Cup,” he told Indian Express.

However, Sethi resigned last week, and elections to pick the next PCB chairman have been postponed till July 17.

With the Balochistan High Court issuing a stay order against the holding of elections for the chairman’s post on Monday (June 26) on petitions filed by two former members of the PCB’s cricket management committee, confusion reigns in Pakistan cricket at the moment.

After Najam Sethi’s resignation, the Board is being run by interim chairman Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana.

Zaka Ashraf, nominated for the chairman’s post, must win votes of the Board of Governors to officially take charge of the key post.

Pakistan await government’s clearance

As per the PCB, it needs Pakistan government’s green signal to tour India for the World Cup 2023.

“The PCB requires the government of Pakistan’s clearance for any tour to India, including the match venues,” PCB Communications Director Sami Ul Hasan said in a statement.

“We are liaising with our government for guidance. This position is consistent to what we had told the ICC a couple of weeks ago when they shared with us the draft schedule and sought our feedback,” he added.

A PCB official said the government has not yet issued any NOC to the PCB to travel to India and since it was a sensitive issue, the Board can only move forward after getting clear directives from its government.

“Our participation in the World Cup and us playing in Ahmedabad on October 15 or in Mumbai if we qualify for semi-finals will all be dependent on government clearance,” said a PCB official.

“We have already informed the ICC that our participation in the tournament or any issues over venues is linked to firstly the PCB getting clearance from the government to travel to India,” the official added.

What is ICC saying?

According to a Pakistan foreign ministry official, the government is “evaluating all aspects” regarding team’s participation in the World Cup.

“India’s policy of not playing cricket in Pakistan is disappointing. We are observing and evaluating all aspects relating to our participation in the World Cup including the security situation for Pakistani cricketers and we will offer our views to the Pakistan Cricket Board in due course,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch was quoted as saying in Dawn newspaper on June 23.

The ICC is confident that Pakistan will travel to India for the World Cup.

Pakistan have a signed participation agreement to compete and the world governing body “100% expects them to be there and has had no indications to the contrary”.

“All members have to abide by the rules and the laws of their country and we respect that. But we’re confident Pakistan will be in India for the men’s cricket World Cup,” an ICC spokesperson told PTI .

Pakistan to send security delegation

According to a PTI report on Saturday (July 1), Pakistan is set to send a security delegation to India for inspecting the World Cup venues before giving clearance for the national team’s travel.

An official source in the Inter-Provincial Coordination (Sports) Ministry said that the government, including the foreign and interior ministry, would decide when to send the security delegation to India once the new chairman of the PCB was elected after the Eid holidays.

“The security delegation will go with representation from the PCB to inspect the venues where Pakistan will play and also the security and other arrangements made for them in the World Cup,” he said.

“Before any tour to India it is standard practice for the cricket board to seek permission from the government which normally sends a delegation to India. The delegation will interact with the officials there and discuss and inspect with them the security and other arrangements for our players, officials, fans, and media, who will go for the tournament,” he added.

Miandad advises Pakistan not to travel to India

Pakistan’s batting great Javed Miandad recently said that the team should not travel to India to play in the World Cup.

“Pakistan has been to India in 2012 and even in 2016 now it is the turn of the Indians to come here. If I had to make a decision I would never go to India to play any match, even the World Cup. We are always ready to play them (India) but they never respond in the same manner,” Miandad said.

“Pakistan cricket is bigger; we are still producing quality players. So I don’t think even if we don’t go to India it will make any difference to us. I always say one can’t choose its neighbours, so it is better to live by cooperating with each other. And I have always said cricket is a sport which brings people closer to each other and can remove misunderstandings and grievances between countries,” he added.

“It was on the cards that they would again not send their team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup so it is time we also take a strong stand now,” he said.

LONDON: The International Cricket Council (ICC) expressed confidence that Pakistan cricket team will travel to India for playing upcoming one-day international (ODI) World Cup, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) subjecting its participation to government clearance, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

In a statement to Indian news agency, an ICC spokesperson pointed out that Pakistan has a signed participation agreement to compete and the world governing body “100 percent expects them to be there”.

Will Pakistan travel to India for 2023 World Cup?

pakistan travel to india world cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is still apprehensive about sending its team to India for the ODI World Cup but International Cricket Council (ICC) is "confident" that the Babar Azam-led team will compete in the 50-over showpiece.

The ICC on Tuesday announced the fixtures for the October 5-November 19 tournament and rejected PCB's request to not schedule their matches in Chennai and Bengaluru against specific teams.

PCB did not want to play Afghanistan on spin-friendly track in Chennai and also wanted to avoid facing Australia in Bengaluru.

As part of the announcement in Mumbai, it was confirmed that Pakistan will lock horns with India in Ahmedabad on October 15 and take on Australia (October 20) and Afghanistan (October 23) at pre-decided venues.

Soon after the announcement, the PCB made it clear that its participation in the ODI World Cup will be subject to government clearance.

"Our participation in the World Cup and us playing in Ahmedabad on October 15 or in Mumbai if we qualify for semi-finals will all be dependent on government clearance," said a PCB official.

The PCB official said the government has not yet issued any NOC to the PCB to travel to India and since it was a sensitive issue, the Board can only move forward after getting clear directives from its government.

"We have already informed the ICC that our participation in the tournament or any issues over venues is linked to firstly the PCB getting clearance from the government to travel to India," the official said.

"All members have to abide by the rules and the laws of their country and we respect that. But we're confident Pakistan will be in India for the men's cricket World Cup," an ICC spokesperson told PTI.

Members of the Pakistan cricket team were on Monday issued Indian visas for the ODI World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed. The announcement came hours after the PCB raised serious concerns with the global body over the delay in the national team's travel to Hyderabad.

The visa clearance came less than 48 hours before Pakistan's scheduled travel to India in the wee hours of September 27. They play their first warm-up game against New Zealand in Hyderabad on September 29.

"Visas have been issued to Pakistan," an ICC spokesperson told PTI.

However, confusion remained in the Pakistan camp. "We have not got the call from Indian High Commission yet over visa clearance. Member of our team is stationed there," PCB spokesperon Umar Farooq told PTI.

The confirmation from the ICC came after the PCB wrote to ICC CEO Geoff Allardice on Monday over the visa delay besides claiming the anxious wait has adversely impacted the team's preparation for the 50-over showpiece.

Pakistan were supposed to have a two-day team bonding session in Dubai before their scheduled arrival in Hyderabad on September 27 but was cancelled due to the uncertainty over the Indian visa.

The Babar Azam-led side plays two warm-up games and as many World Cup matches in Hyderabad starting with the practice fixture against New Zealand.

In the letter addressed to Allardice, the PCB also claimed that its concerns over visas being granted to players, team officials, fans and journalists for the World Cup in India have not been addressed for more than three years. It also added that such inequitable treatment of Pakistan will not be acceptable.

Reiterating those concerns, Farooq added: "There has been an extraordinary delays in getting clearance and securing Indian visas for the Pakistan team for ICC World Cup.

"We have written to ICC raising our concerns about inequitable treatment towards Pakistan and reminding them of these obligations towards the World Cup. It's a matter of disappointment that the Pakistan team has to go through the uncertainty ahead of the major tournament.

"We have been reminding about their obligations from last three years and it has all come down to last two days with our first warm game scheduled on September 29. We were forced to cancel our original plan to organise team-building exercise in Dubai on the way to India. We have had to rework our plan and book new flights, but these plans are subject issuance of visas," he said.

Pakistan last visited India for the T20 World Cup in 2016. The arch-rivals only play each other in the Asia Cup and ICC tournaments due to the tense relations between the two countries.

PCB sources informed that flight tickets of around 35 members have been re-booked now that the Dubai trip is off. The team will now leave for Hyderabad from Lahore in the wee hours of September 27 and reach Hyderabad via Dubai in the night.

"The warm-up game is less than four days away and players are in a state of uncertainty. If the players are having to experience delays, one can only wonder what will happen to visa applications of fans and journalists," a source said.

Visa applications from Pakistan require clearances from three ministries -- home, external affairs and sports.

Pakistan's second warm-up game will be against Australia on October 3, also in Hyderabad.

They will remain in the city for their opening two World Cup games against Netherlands and Sri Lanka on October 6 and 10 respectively before flying to Ahmedabad for the big game against hosts India on October 14.

Only two members from the current Pakistan squad have toured India for cricket -- Mohammad Nawaz and Salman Agha.

  • Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to arrive in India on September 27
  • Pakistan play their first warm-up match against New Zealand in Hyderabad on September 29
  • Pakistan cancelled their team bonding camp in Dubai

Players and team officials of Pakistan's World Cup-bound contingent are yet to get visas for their scheduled travel to India on September 27, two days before their opening warm-up fixture.

The Pakistan squad was supposed to reach Hyderabad via Dubai where a two-day team bonding exercise was planned before travelling to India on September 27. The Babar Azam-led side is scheduled to play its first warm-up game against New Zealand on September 29.

Cricket World Cup: Full Coverage

PCB sources told PTI that the team bonding trip to Dubai has been cancelled as players await their visas from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

Sources also confirmed that the PCB has raised the matter with the International Cricket Council (ICC). Pakistan last visited India for the T20 World Cup in 2016. The arch-rivals only play each other in Asia Cup and ICC tournaments due to the tense relations between the two countries.

"PCB had sent its officials to Islamabad for passport collection yesterday but the visas are still in process. That has forced the board to cancel the team bonding trip in Dubai. If the visas come through, the team will reach Hyderabad on September 27 via Dubai," said a source.

Another source privy to the matter added: "the visas will come through after due vetting process. When it comes to issuing an Indian visa to a Pakistan passport holder, clearances need to come from three ministries - home, external affairs and sports. That process takes time but it will happen." A total of 33 members of the Pakistan contingent, including players, three travelling reserves and team officials, are awaiting their visas.

Tournament host BCCI could not be reached for a comment.

Pakistan likely to travel to india for world cup.

pakistan travel to india world cup

KARACHI: Pakistan will most likely travel to India for the upcoming World Cup after the hybrid model proposed by the country’s board for the preceding Asia Cup was accepted by its counterparts across the border.

The hybrid model will see Pakistan retain their status as the hosts of the Asia Cup — holding four or five matches — before the tournament moves to another venue where India will play their group games with the second-round and the knockout-stage matches to follow at the same venue — most likely to be Sri Lanka.

The model had received long-standing opposition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before it was finally accepted over the last weekend and an official announcement by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected in the next two to three days. The tournament is set to be played in September.

The PCB had been ready to show flexibility over a tit-for-tat stance it had threatened to take come the World Cup had the BCCI rejected the hybrid model. The former had also expected the Pakistan government to grant approval for the country’s team to travel to India for the 50-over showpiece “much easily” if the proposed model was accepted.

Ahmedabad clash against hosts subject to govt approval

It is, therefore, understood that Pakistan will feature in India for the first time since 2016. Whether they take on the hosts, their arch-rivals, in Ahmedabad — as proposed in a draft schedule sent by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to the boards of the participating sides — is also to be decided by the country’s government.

Dawn understands the PCB, having received the draft schedule as well, has started it’s consultations with the government over the fixture list and a decision is expected to be made in the coming week.

That would also mean that the official schedule of the World Cup will be released just over three months ahead of the first game of the tournament on October 5.

According to the draft schedule Pakistan will kick off their campaign on October 6 against one of the teams coming through from the preceding qualifying round in Hyderabad before taking on another qualifier at the same venue on October 12.

The Babar Azam-led unit is scheduled to fly out to Ahmedabad for the high-octane clash against India on October 15 before playing Australia five days later in Bengaluru and Afghanistan and South Africa in Chennai on October 23 and 27.

After locking horns with Bangladesh in Kolkata four days later, Pakistan will return to Bengaluru for their match against New Zealand on November 5 before concluding the league stage with their fixture against England in Kolkata on November 12.

The dates and venues for the tournament’s semi-finals and final have not been included in the draft schedule

‘ACC’S FUTURE SECURED’

According to sources, the PCB is looking at the hybrid model’s acceptance as a saviour of the ACC — a cricketing bloc formed in 1983 to protect the interests of Asia’s cricketing nations.

The board’s high-ups believe that the strength of the continental cricket body will see the game thrive in the future and that the hybrid model will go onto be seen as a blueprint for the future come complex situations like the political tensions between India and Pakistan — which have deprived the countries’ sides from bilateral cricket since 2012.

The PCB is now also confident about hosting the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the rights of staging which the board won two years ago. There is also a belief in the board’s offices that if Pakistan travel to India for the World Cup, there will be very few reasons for the BCCI to not return the favour come the Champions Trophy.

How to get India vs. Pakistan tickets: Prices for the ICC T20 World Cup in New York

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup comes to the United States for the first time this June as part of a co-hosting effort with the West Indies. Among the International Cricket Council games is the highly-anticipated India vs. Pakistan match-up. If you're looking to find tickets, then you're in luck, because we've rounded up everything you need to know about how to get India vs. Pakistan tickets for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Last year, India narrowly lost the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup to Australia despite a home-field advantage. India has won the World Cup twice, and Pakistan, their longtime rivals, has won the revered competition once. The last time India and Pakistan played each other was at the Cricket World Cup in October 2023, where India beat Pakistan by seven wickets.

When it comes to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is a more recently created competition, both India and Pakistan have each won once. Pakistan played in the finals at the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup but ultimately lost to England. India also lost to England in the 2022 competition, during the semi-finals. The match on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is shaping up to be the main draw of the US portion of the competition this year.

Original standard tickets are a hot commodity and hard to come by, but you can browse resale ticket availability on websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

ICC ran a ballot for original standard tickets in February, which received a massive response of more than three million applications, according to the ICC. While some tickets are still available on the official T20 website and more are occasionally released, original India vs. Pakistan tickets have sold out and are no longer available. A new wave of public tickets were made available earlier this month, but this didn't include more tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game.

Tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game are available on resale vendor websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . Due to the substantial demand, these are higher-priced than the original standard ticket prices.

How much are India vs. Pakistan tickets?

While it's unclear exactly how much the original standard India vs. Pakistan tickets went for in the ballot, the cheapest tickets for other matches at USA venues start at $35 (although India vs. Pakistan was most likely more). The only currently available India vs. Pakistan resale tickets on StubHub start at $1,400 each. Vivid Seats listings are similarly priced, starting at $1,494. Over the past few weeks, StubHub prices have slightly increased and Vivid Seats prices have slightly decreased.

What about other Men's T20 World Cup matches?

While India vs. Pakistan might be the most anticipated event of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, there are plenty of other exciting matches throughout June, culminating in the finals on June 29 in Barbados. If the event you're interested in has sold out, you can always check out the official T20 website  or browse resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

Both India and Pakistan are scheduled to play other teams during the tournament. India is set to play Ireland on June 5, the United States on June 12, and Canada on June 15. Pakistan is scheduled to play the United States on June 6, Canada on June 11, and Ireland on June 16.

Note: Certain services and regions prohibit the resale of tickets. Business Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal reselling of tickets, and entry into an event is at the venue's discretion.

Shreyas Iyer

That’s all for today . Simon Burnton’s report from Ahmedabad is below, and we’ll be back in the morning for live coverage of England v Afghanistan. Bye.

India captain Rohit Sharma speaks

The bowlers set the game up for us. Restricting them to 190 was a great effort – at one stage we were looking at 270/280. We pride ourselves on the fact that whoever gets the ball does the job for the team. It’s my job as captain to read the conditions and decide who is the best guy to bowl. We’ve been very clear with what we want to do: who bats in what position and what happens is someone isn’t fit. Guys got runs and wickets going into the World Cup, so all in all it’s looking good. We don’t want to get too excited or too low. It’s a long tournament and we want to stay balanced. That is the key.

The Pakistan captain Babar Azam speaks

We started well, then suddenly we collapsed in the middle overs. It’s not good. We were aiming for 280/290 but that collapse cost us. With the new ball we were not up to the mark, though Rohit played an outstanding innings.

“If Geoffrey Boycott was called anything,” says John Starbuck, “it was (politely) the Barnsley Bore, which was inaccurate, as he came from Fitzwilliam, which is in Wakefield.”

The player of the match is … Jasprit Bumrah . He did bowl beautifully (7-1-19-2), but I assumed it would be Rohit. Anyway, here’s what he had to say.

It felt good. We try to analyse the wicket as soon as possible; we realised it was on the slower side and that a hard length would make run-scoring difficult. We knew as the ball got a little older it might reverse and grip a little bit. We were waiting for that and trying to make it as difficult is possible. [On his ability to size up conditions so quickly] When I was young I used to ask a lot of questions to my senior and I think that helped me build up a lot of knowledge. [On Rizwan’s wicket] It was turning [for Ravindra Jadeja] but not consistently. I count my slower ball as a spinner so I thought it could be a good option to make run-scoring difficult. I was trying to do that and it gripped - was one of those days. [On bowling Shadab Khan] There was a little phase when there was reverse swing. It was an outswinger that I tried to bowl, and it was one of those occasions when the white ball did reverse swing. I’m very happy with the execution. As a youngster I saw Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram bowl some magical deliveries, so if he’s praising [the ball] that’s a good thing for me.

It’s now India 8-0 Pakistan at ODI World Cups , and this is the most emphatic win of the lot. Their captain Rohit Sharma was inspired with both brain and bat. First he presided over an almighty Pakistan collapse from 155/2 to 191 all out; then he pre-empted any new-ball ferocity from Pakistan by whacking six sixes in a 63-ball 86.

India win by seven wickets with 117 balls remaining!

30.3 overs: India 192-3 (Iyer 53, Rahul 19) Shreyas Iyer does just that, crashing Nawaz down the ground for four to finish the match and bring up his first World Cup half-century. India have pulverised Pakistan with almost 20 overs to spare.

30th over: India 186-3 (Iyer 48, Rahul 18) Rahul mows Hasan Ali disdainfully down the ground for four. The rest is dot balls, which means Iyer will have the chance to reach his fifty and maybe finish the match in the next over.

29th over: India 182-3 (Iyer 48, Rahul 14) Rahul muscles Nawaz down the ground for his first boundary, aided by a misfield from the sliding Iftikhar. From a neutral perspective, this has been a lamentable mismatch.

28th over: India 175-3 (Iyer 47, Rahul 8) KL Rahul has quietly become a key player at No5. He’s bang in form, too: in his last 10 ODI, going back to the Asia Cup, he averages over 100. This is a chance to gently massage that average, which he does with a couple of singles and a classy back-foot punch for two off Rauf. India need 16 to win.

27th over: India 170-3 (Iyer 45, Rahul 5) “In response to Jeremy Boyce, I am considerably older than you and at no time did I hear Sir Vivian referred to as The Prince,” says Adam Roberts. “No-one outside Yorkshire called Boycott ‘King Geoff’ - if he had to be acknowledged it would be [redacted].”

26th over: India 168-3 (Iyer 44, Rahul 4) Haris Rauf, who was manhandled by Rohit Sharma earlier in the innings, replaces Afridi. His last ball is a jaffa that straightens to beat KL Rahul, who seems to be struggling to deal with the lack of pressure.

The contest is not long for this world, so while I remember, here’s a plug for Simon Burnton’s World Cup diary.

25th over: India 165-3 (Iyer 41, Rahul 4) Iyer drives Nawaz just short of extra cover. These two look unsure of the best way to dot the Is and cross the Ts. Thus far they have dealt solely in singles.

“ I sat on the loo in the first innings just as India took their fourth wicket so I did, of course, stay there until the end of the Pakistani innings,” writes Deepak Puri. “A prolapse is a small price to pay for an Indian victory.”

Thank heavens Jim Royle wasn’t a cricket fan.

24th over: India 162-3 (Iyer 39, Rahul 3) Afridi’s performance is a bit of a silver lining for Pakistan. His form since returning with injury hasn’t been great, but tonight he has bowled with intelligence and intensity. His sixth over costs just one, which leaves him with figures of 6-0-36-2.

23rd over: India 161-3 (Iyer 38, Rahul 3) India need 31 from 27 overs; an arse-nipper it is not.

I’ll let you decide whether that link is safe to click.

22nd over: India 157-3 (Iyer 36, Rahul 1) “I can assure you that back in ‘t day Geoffrey was known as King Geoff, what with his hundred hundreds, hundred run-outs of his batting partners, taken to contact lenses rather than his old spectacles, and all,” says Jeremy Boyce. “When Viv hit the scene he was obviously the successor, so he was the Prince, young, handsome and dashing, just like the Ki....”

How funny. To a quadragenarian whippersnapper like me, he’s only ever been King Viv.

WICKET! India 156-3 (Rohit c Iftikhar b Afridi 86)

No century for Rohit Sharma, who has been duped by the returning Shaheen Afridi. He dragged a wide slower ball to midwicket, one hand coming off the bat, and Iftikhar Ahmed took a simple catch.

Rohit walks off looking thoroughly cheesed off at missing out on a ton, though a standing ovation should make him feel better. He made an elegant, sadistic 86 from 63 balls, with six sixes. Before that he captained like almost flawlessly, so the player of the match adjudicator has an enviably simple job.

21st over: India 154-2 (Rohit 85, Iyer 35) Iyer makes it back-to-back sixes for India, pummelling Nawaz down the ground, and then Rohit belts a cut for four.

India are going to obliterate the record for their fastest ODI runchase against Pakistan. That was in the Asia Cup in 2018, when they won with 21 overs to spare.

20th over: India 139-2 (Rohit 80, Iyer 28) Rohit sweeps Shadab round the corner for four. Afridi made a good sliding stop, only to knock the ball against his trailing arm and over the boundary.

Shadab’s next ball is a high full toss. He might as well have thrown it straight into the crowd, because that’s where Rohit put it. It’s his sixth six , and he is 20 runs away from – and I’m going to keep repeating this statistic because it is absurd – an eighth century in his last 15 World Cup innings. Nobody else has scored more than six.

As we mentioned, Pakistan’s next game is against Australia on Friday. India beat Bangladesh next, then New Zealand a week tomorrow. Also, I’ve just realised Pakistan’s last league game is against England. I mag ine if that’s a de facto quarter-final.

19th over: India 129-2 (Rohit 68, Iyer 27) Another quiet over from the left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz. Three singles from it, the last of which brings up a classy fifty partnership .

“Is there an accurate figure for the number of spectators today?” asks Molly Blake.

I don’t think there has been an official attendance, accurate or otherwise. I’d imagine it’s definitely in six figures.

18th over: India 126-2 (Rohit 67, Iyer 25) The score is India 7-0 Pakistan. Not World Cup wins against each other, but sixes hit in this match. Shreyas Iyer has just struck the seventh, launching Shadab Khan down the crowd. (It’s also 7-0 in World Cup head-to-heads, though it’s about to become 8-0.)

“What is it with Pakistan when they face India in a World Cup?” wonders Krishnamoorthy V. “The closest parallel that comes to my mind is the aversion of Torres to the net after moving to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool.”

For a long time their ODI record against India was excellent, but in the last 15 years or so – with one entirely glorious exception – it has been hopeless.

17th over: India 117-2 (Rohit 66, Iyer 18) Pakistan should try to rationalise this defeat on the grounds that they always lose to India, and almost every other team should lose to India in the league phase as well. The net run-rate hit isn’t ideal, but there’s plenty of time to make that up. If they beat three of England, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, they will qualify for the semi-finals. Two wins might be enough.

16th over: India 116-2 (Rohit 65, Iyer 17) Rohit guides Shadab past past for four. It’s a shame that this has turned into yet another mismatch, but India have played with intimidating authority. It’s hard to see anyone beating them, although many of us thought the same in 2019.

“It was an argument about Duckworth-Lewis and not a foot-rub that really got Tony ‘Rocky Horror’ thrown out of that window,” says Niall Mullen.

The word is that the practice of everyone sitting in exactly same position for superstitious reasons during a nervous runchase stems from a misunderstanding when somebody put the Pulp Fiction soundtrack on in the dressing-room . (NB: clip contains adult/Tarantinian language)

15th over: India 110-2 (Rohit 61, Iyer 16) Pakistan are feeding Rohit Sharma like a bowling machine. Another short ball from Rauf is pulled easily into the crowd, and a single takes Rohit to 61 from 48 balls. It looks like he is heading for – and this is a preposterous statistic – his eighth century in the last 15 World Cup innings.

Eight in 15 innings !

14th over: India 101-2 (Rohit 52, Iyer 15) Shadab Khan replaces Hasan Ali, and Rohit drives his first ball for a single to reach another half-century : 36 balls, three fours, four sixes. He started a bit skittishly but since then it’s been the usual imperious stuff.

“Is it just net run-rate stopping Pakistan putting in 3 slips and a gully?” wonders Niall Mullen.

Net run-rate and pride. Marsellus Wallace didn’t think much of either, although his monologue about protecting net run-rate didn’t make the final cut.

13th over: India 96-2 (Rohit 49, Iyer 13) Too straight from Rauf, and Iyer moves into double figures with a simple flick to the fine-leg boundary. Time to start singing Bon Jovi: India need 96 to win.

12th over: India 88-2 (Rohit 47, Iyer 7) Iyer swivel-pulls Hasan Ali expertly for four, and India need 104 from 38 overs .

11th over: India 81-2 (Rohit 46, Iyer 1) Another quick wicket might make things interesting – and Rauf almost gets it with an excellent yorker to Shreyas Iyer, the new batter. Iyer squeezed it into the ground and reacted smartly to knock the ball away as it deflected in the general direction of the stumps.

Rauf tries to get himself going with a gratuitous throw back towards Iyer, which leads to a chorus of pantomime boos from the crowd. Iyer gets off the mark with a mistimed pull for a single.

That was a really good over from Haris Rauf. If only Pakistan’s attack had 250 to defend.

10th over: India 79-2 (Rohit 45, Iyer 0) “I don’t get this ‘150-2 at 30 overs is a good platform’ thing that appears to be revived as both a tactic and a commentary cliché,” says Gary Naylor. “Morgan’s England got rid of it (until the final in 2019, which they almost lost as a result) and won far more than they lost by asking the best batters to hit the most boundaries whenever they were in.

“Everyone castigates the 4, 5 or 6 for getting out for 30 off 25 balls but is 50 off 60 that much better if it means 8, 9 and 10 have to make 30 off 25 to get up to a competitive score? You risk 200 all out of course, but the reward is a lot of 340+ scores.”

That’s a lot of numbers, and my head hurts slightly. I broadly agree with you, though surely it depends on pitches, context and the strengths of a particular side. For example, a more old-fashioned approach has worked brilliantly for South Africa this year. And much as I love Eoin Morgan, and feel exceptionally smug having defended him when so many people wanted rid of him between 2015-18, I think Australia’s 2007 team might have been the first to turn a 50-over innings into a sprint.

WICKET! India 79-2 (Kohli c Babar b Hasan 16)

No runchase goodies for Virat Kohli today. He cloths a pull straight to mid-on and walks off after making 16 from 17 balls. His average in this World Cup is now a pitiful 78.

9th over: India 77-1 (Rohit 44, Kohli 15) Another devastating statement of intent from Rohit Sharma, who drives Haris Rauf’s second ball over long on. That’s his 300th six in ODIs, which puts him 300 up on you and me.

Kohli survives a run-out chance after being called through for a dodgy single. He was short of his ground when Afridi’s throw from mid-on missed the stumps at the striker’s end.

Good lord, make that 301 sixes : Rohit has opened the face to drive a slower ball spectacularly over extra cover and into the crowd. Sadism is rarely as elegant as this. As we said earlier, he doesn’t want to beat Pakistan, he wants to humiliate them.

“Sympathy for King Geoff?” sniffs Jeremy Boyce. “I suppose one should show a little kindness to anyone who insists on bowling in their cap. Joel Garner it wasn’t... Anyway, Prince Viv, not for the first or last time, put the old pretender firmly in his place.”

Yes, although by all accounts he should have been out for 20-odd to Mike Hendrick (but not first ball as is often suggested). And surely Viv was the king?

8th over: India 63-1 (Rohit 31, Kohli 14) The left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz assumes the position. Rohit Sharma humours him for a few deliveries and then flicks lazily over midwicket for six . We’ve seen greatness so often from these two that it’s easy to lose sight of how good they are.

This is getting very ugly for Pakistan, who face being thrashed in a manner that could fracture morale ahead of a vital game against Australia on Friday. The loser of that one will be in all sorts.

7th over: India 54-1 (Rohit 23, Kohli 13) Afridi decides to test Rohit with the short ball, and instantly regrets it. Rohit hooks effortlessly into the crowd at long leg, the first six of the entire match.

Kohli adds bleach to Pakistan’s wounds with back-to-back boundaries, a pull through midwicket followed by an exhilarating cover drive. India are romping to victory, and we haven’t yet had 50 overs in the match.

6th over: India 39-1 (Rohit 16, Kohli 5) Of those who have played at least 10 innings at a men’s World Cup, only Lance Klusener (124.00), Andrew Symonds (103.00) and Ben Stokes (66.42) have a higher average than Rohit Sharma (66.17). He’s been slightly skittish tonight and almost offers Hasan Ali a return catch with an uppish drive.

A good over from Hasan includes five successive dot balls to Kohli.

5th over: India 38-1 (Rohit 15, Kohli 5) Afridi switches round the wicke to Rohit, who edges a lusty yahoo between slip and backward point. He’s playing very aggressively here, especially as the required run rate is below 3.5 an over. That’s Kohli’s first boundary.

Kohli looks suspciously at the pitch after defending a ball that keeps a bit low. The next delivery is full, wide and skimmed thrillingly through the covers for four.

“Thank you for the painful reminder of that devastating denouement in 1979,” says Brian Withington. “In the spirit of recycling, I quote from my email to you of 2021 (which I don’t think got used then). “I watched the 1979 WC final on a black and white TV in my student accommodation and distinctly recall the disappointment when Joel Garner comprehensively yorked Graham Gooch, who was desperately trying to retrieve the situation. “I recall reading later Brearley’s admission that he was mistakenly swept along by the tea-time euphoria that all he and Boycott needed to do was keep going - he mentioned Derek Randall in particular as congratulating them on the game being in the bag. “On reviewing now it’s striking that there was both full lunch and tea intervals as well as a break between innings, and I’m guessing it was 60 overs a side, too!”

Lord Beefy also told Brearley and Boycott to keep going, which doesn’t quite compute. After taking a subterranean dive into that game for a Wisden piece in 2019 I had a lot more sympathy for Brearley and Boycott.

4th over: India 31-1 (Rohit 14, Kohli 0) Rohit cuts Hasan Ali to the fence, inside-edges short of the keeper and then flicks beautifully through midwicket for four more. The way India have started suggests they don’t want to beat Pakistan; they want to humiliate them.

3rd over: India 22-1 (Rohit 5, Kohli 0) That was a much better over from Afridi, who induced a couple of false strokes from Rohit before dismissing Gill. Early wickets are Pakistan’s only hope.

WICKET! India 23-1 (Gill c Shadab b Afridi 16)

Silence. Gill slaps Afridi straight to backward point, where Shadab Khan takes a very sharp catch. Afridi strikes the usual pose, arms spread wide, and Gill goes for a silken cameo of 16 from 11 balls.

2nd over: India 22-0 (Rohit 5, Gill 16) Hasan Ali shares the new ball with Shaheen, but Gill ups the punishment with three fours in the over. He drives exquisitely between extra cover and mid off for four, an almost identical boundary to the one he stroked in the previous over, waves another drive to the cover fence and helps a poor delivery to fine leg.

If there has ever been a more elegant opening partnership than Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, I’d like to see them.

1st over: India 10-0 (Rohit 5, Gill 4) Rohit Sharma makes the most languid statement of intent, flicking Afrdi’s first ball up and over the leg side for four.

Shubman Gill, back in the side after Dengue fever, times his first ball past extra cover for four more.

There’s no more than a hint of inswing for Afridi, who has an LBW appeal turned down when Gill is hit by a full toss, and that’s a chastening start for Pakistan.

Here come the players. Shaheen Shah Afridi will open the bowling to Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. A wicketless first spell is not an option.

“Just back from a lovely long bike ride,” says Jeremy Boyce. “Glad I got off before I checked the score otherwise it could have been a nasty fall, much like Pakistan’s innings. As for the lack of close finishes, isn’t it a bit like the Rugby WC: te pool games can be too one-sided, the whole level will ramp up once the knockouts start. Anyway, this one isn’t over yet, and lest we forget, it’s a funny old game cricket...”

That’s true to an extent, but there are differences – in the rugby World Cup you have quarter-finals, whereas here there will only be three knockout games. There are more minnows in that tournament too. The odd thing about this World Cup so far is that even the meetings between the heavyweights have been one-sided.

Collapse update... last 8 wickets fell for 36, comfortably Pakistan's worst such figure in World Cup (previously - 60, v E in 1992 and v WI in 2019), and their third worst in any ODI. Ninth worst by any team in WC, second worst v India in WC. List: https://t.co/LHAN2Ntmjb — Andy Zaltzman (@ZaltzCricket) October 14, 2023

On the plus side, at least they didn’t lose eight wickets for 11 runs in their own World Cup final .

“Afternoon Rob!” writes Kimberley Thonger. “The lesson to be taken from that Pakistan innings is, when on the platform, trying to board the train to Big Score, mind the gap.”

Thanks Tim, hello everyone . Never mind the zinda, that was just plain bad from Pakistan, who collapsed miserably from 155/2 to 191 all out and are facing an eighth consecutive defeat to India at an ODI World Cup.

It was an outstanding team effort from India – all five bowlers took two wickets apiece, just as they did in the 2011 semi-final – but there was a sad familiarity to Pakistan’s demise. Sad for Pakistan fans and neutrals: this is the 14th match of World Cup and we still haven’t have a close finish. Don’t expect one today. The cornered tigers of 1992 would struggle to defend a total that feels at least 80 below par.

An innings of two halves

What on earth happened there? I feel as stunned as Mohammad Nawaz looked. Pakistan were 155 for two with their two mainstays, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, motoring along – in the middle lane, but still, their only problem was failing to find top gear. Then Babar got out, to the erratic Mohammed Siraj, and the wheels fell off. Pakistan lost eight wickets for 36 in 13.1 overs of nothing at all from their point of view.

The player of the match at this stage is Rohit Sharma, by a mile. He kept making things happen with his bowling changes, showing some inspired faith in Siraj and Hardik Pandya, getting two wickets from all five of his main bowlers, bringing Bumrah back at just the right moment, and calling for some clever reviews. It’s all been a bummer for the game, a stunner for the flag-waving fans, and a masterclass for anyone who is interested in the art of captaincy.

Can India knock off the 192 they need for victory? Can they do it in 30 overs? Or will Pakistan astound us all over again? Find out soon with the great Rob Smyth. Thanks for your company, correspondence and satirical thoughts about stadiums named after prime ministers.

PAKISTAN ALL OUT FOR 191!

Haris Rauf LBW b Jadeja 2 Yet another triumph for Rohit, who decides to review when this ball seems to Marais Erasmus, and many other people, to be sliding down leg. It’s hitting! And Pakistan’s calamity is complete, with seven overs unused.

Ravindra Jadeja and the India team celebrate the wicket of Haris Rauf as Pakistan are bowled out for 191.

155-2 in the 30th over @TimdeLisle ? Platforms ain't what they used to be, and not just in this match. — Gary Naylor 85 (@garynaylor85) October 14, 2023

42nd over: Pakistan 190-9 (Shaheen Shah Afridi 1, Haris Rauf 2) Yet another bowling change does the trick. Since Babar was out, we’ve seen seven wickets fall for 34 off 11.4 overs. “Only Pakistan can do this!” says Nasser Hussain, suddenly forgetting that he used to captain a team that always had a collapse up its sleeve. And still does – as do Australia at the moment. That said, this will surely go down as one of the all-time great capitulations. Only some magic from Shaheen Shah Afridi can save Pakistan now, and it’s not going to come from his bat.

Wicket! Hasan Ali c Gill b Jadeja 12 (Pakistan 187-9)

Two in two balls! Hasan Ali, the only lower-order batter to show any fight, gets a top edge, and that’s a well-deserved wicket for Jadeja.

40th over: Pakistan 187-8 (Hasan Ali 12, Shaheen Shah Afridi 0) That was another surprise bowling change from Rohit: Bumrah off, Hardik back. He couldn’t be thinking he needed to save Bumrah up for the death, could he? Maybe he wanted Hardik to find some rhythm. His first ball was a loosener and Hasan belted it back past him for four, but then Rohit’s magic touch came into play yet again. This has been a masterclass, entitled Leadership on the Big Stage.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 23: Virat Kohli of India celebrates after the final run is scored ... [+] during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 23, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Darrian Traynor - ICC/ICC via Getty Images)

On June 9, Pakistan play India in the 2024 T20 World Cup at New York’s Nassau County Eisenhower Park in the latest episode of their historic rivalry. Despite the hotly contested sold-out match between the two, the actual result is becoming almost as predictable as Maria Sharapova’s increasingly futile attempts to defeat Serena Williams back in the day. That mismatch ended 20-2 in the American's favor. India are currently 14-1 in the last 15 World Cup white-ball matches between the Asian giants.

After Pakistan were roundly thrashed by their rivals in October at a raucous Ahmedabad , their team director Mickey Arthur made his feelings clear. “We were a little bit timid tonight with our overall performance. I would have liked us to really take the game on just a little bit more. It's a massive occasion, as we know, but I think we just went into our shells a little bit," said the South African.

Playing the inferiority card almost comes naturally now. Changes were needed immediately after Pakistan failed to make it to the knockout stages. Babar Azam stepped down as captain in all formats to be replaced by Shan Masood in Tests and Shaheen Afridi in T20s.

There are moments when Pakistan look unbeatable, but even more when they suddenly collapse inwards, a total mess of unthinking cricket and frayed nerves. “Pakistan cricket at its best: one minute down, next minute up,” said former England skipper Nasser Hussain in one of the more succinct explanations of their temperament gauge. They are masters of unpredictability, a mess of contradictions amid one of the most talented pools of players in the world. A confident leader like the legendary Imran Khan is certainly a thing of the past.

After five months in the role, Afridi’s position as skipper for the tournament in the United States and the West Indies is under threat. "Even I don't know who the captain will be," said PCB Chair Moshin Naqvi at the launch of the selection committee. Afridi has had only one series to manage, a 4-1 loss to New Zealand, but his position was more compromised by a disastrous domestic PSL PSL campaign where his Qalanders team finished bottom of the table after one win in ten matches.

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

This is hardly the kind of preparation needed for a World Cup campaign, showing a true lack of faith in the 23-year-old’s tactical acumen and suitability. Yet, this is also a key barometer of how confused the team becomes when the pressure has been at its most intense. In the 2022 edition of the T20 tournament at a packed MCG, the Green Shirts had the Indians in deep trouble at 45-4 after ten overs, chasing 159 to win. At one point, India needed an unlikely 28 off eight balls. Then the wheels came off as Mohammad Nawaz bowled two wides in the last over and a waist high full toss. Virat Kohli did the rest.

As Pakistan look to their first fixture against the United States in Texas on June 6, their methodology appears to be going back to the future. Both paceman Mohammad Amir and allrounder Imad Wasim have reversed their international retirements and are included in the squad of 29 undergoing a fitness training camp fortnight with the military at Abbottabad. “The players will undergo a comprehensive training regime tailored to elevate their fitness levels, agility, leadership, strategic thinking and overall performance on the field,” said the PCB in a statement.

It may take more than sheer physical hard labour to elicit the right clinical responses needed in a stressful edge-of-the-seat game. “It's a reality and Pakistan has got to do something about it. They can't be termed as 'chokers' against India because that's not a great tag to have. Somehow it's a mental block, it's a skill block as well,” said ex-skipper Ramiz Raja in the ICC Review Podcast back in October.

The outlier, the one recent victory, came in the 2021 event when India's batting and team selection were stodgy, Mohammad Rizwan and Babar were flying at the top of the order, and Shaheen had the white ball on a piece of string. Unfortunately, the bowling and fielding cracked under pressure against Australia in the semis.

What’s required is a West Indies Shamar Joseph moment at Brisbane to break a deadly cycle of defeat. They need to halt the drowning feeling to build a future that is not weighted down by the anchor of the biggest sceptre in world cricket.

“Records are meant to be broken,” Babar said on the eve of that eighth consecutive World Cup ODI thrashing in the autumn. He’s right on that one. New York, New York, so good they named it twice. A second win in 16 will do nicely.

Dubai floods: Flydubai suspends all flights including for India due to bad weather I VIDEO

Intense rainfall swept across dubai and the wider united arab emirates on tuesday, causing localized flooding and disrupting flights at the world’s busiest airport for international travel..

Ajeet Kumar

Dubai International Airport (DXB) had been temporarily diverting arriving flights on Tuesday evening until weather conditions improve, while keeping the departures operational.

The website for Dubai airport, one of the world's busiest, shows dozens of flights on April 16 delayed or cancelled, with affected destinations including India, Pakistan, Saudi and the United Kingdom.

Adverse weather hit other locations in the Gulf Peninsula, including Oman, where at least 18 people have been killed due to heavy rains in recent days, its state news agency said.

Death toll rises to 18

Meanwhile, the death toll in separate heavy flooding in neighbouring Oman rose to 18 with others still missing as the sultanate prepared for the storm. The rains began late Monday, soaking the sands and roadways of Dubai with some 20 millimetres (0.79 inches) of rain, according to meteorological data collected at Dubai International Airport. The storms intensified around 9 a.m. local Tuesday and continued throughout the day, dumping more rain and hail onto the overwhelmed city.

By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimetres (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 94.7 millimetres (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel and a hub for the long-haul carrier Emirates.

At the airport, standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. The airport ended up halting arrivals Tuesday night and passengers struggled to reach terminals through the floodwater covering surrounding roads.

Australia star makes surprise request ahead of T20 World Cup

The Australia star made an unusual request to team management at the IPL, with one eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Experienced Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed he asked to sit out a recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match to give himself a 'mental and physical break' ahead of June's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Maxwell watched on from the sidelines as his Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fell to a 25-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, with the Australia star admitting after the match that he had asked team management to omit him from the side.

The 35-year-old has made an indifferent start to the ongoing IPL season with just 32 runs from six innings and the dip in form has seen the highly-rated RCB outfit manage just one win from seven matches and sees them languish at the bottom of the IPL table.

Maxwell shows maximum power in Mumbai | CWC23

Glenn Maxwell hit some towering sixes in Mumbai.

With Maxwell set to play a major role in Australia's tilt for T20 World Cup success in the USA and Caribbean in June, the veteran said he requested to team management that he be dropped from the side so he could reset ahead of the 20-over showcase.

“After the first few games hadn’t gone to plan personally for me, it was a pretty easy decision,” Maxwell said.

“I went to (RCB captain Faf du Plessis) and the coaches last game and said it was time to probably try someone else.

"I have been in this situation before in the past, where you can keep playing and dig yourself into a hole. Now is actually the best time to give myself a mental and physical break. With our results this year, it was quite an easy decision. We haven’t been playing as well as we would have liked as a team, and the results show that.

"My personal results have reflected the results we have had. Pretty big deficiency straight after the Powerplay and the middle overs, which have been an area of strength of mine the last couple of seasons. I felt like I wasn’t contributing in a positive way and it felt like, with the position we find ourselves at the table, to give someone else the opportunity to try their wares and hopefully, someone can make the spot their own.”

Maxwell sparks Australia with record-breaking knock | CWC23

Batting highlights as Glenn Maxwell smashed a century for Australia against Netherlands at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023

Maxwell entered the IPL in great touch, having played a major role in helping Australia to a memorable ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title at the end of last year and backed that up with T20I centuries against India and West Indies either side of the new year.

But it's been tough going for Maxwell at RCB, with his innings of 28 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the end of last month the only time he has scored in double figures.

"I probably just haven't got away, it's as simple as that," Maxwell admitted.

"In the first few games, I felt like I made reasonably good decisions but was still finding ways to get out.

"It can happen in T20 cricket and when it can snowball like that and you feel like you’re not getting the runs, you can start to go searching and try too hard and forget about the basics of the game.

"Even if you look at the first game, I ran one off the middle of the bat to the keeper by picking up the length really well.

"I saw a scoring opportunity and I opened the face (of the bat) a little bit too much, and when you're going really well, that goes just wide of the gloves, you get a boundary and you're four off one and all of a sudden you're away for the tournament.

"T20 cricket can be like that sometimes, it's a pretty fickle game."

Glenn Maxwell 'hopes' Virat Kohli misses the T20 World Cup

Glenn Maxwell has hailed Virat Kohli as ‘the most clutch player I have played against’ and says it would be ‘great’ for the other T20 World Cup contenders if he was omitted from India’s squad for the tournament.

India will attempt to win their second T20 World Cup and first since the inaugural event 17 years ago when the 2024 competition takes place in the United States and the West Indies in June.

Kohli is one of the best players of his generation and has amassed more than 100 T20i appearances for India, but his position in the side has been increasingly questioned in recent years.

Thankfully for Kohli’s supporters, he appears to be set to enjoy a sensational Indian Premier League campaign which would make his omission from the T20 World Cup unthinkable.

The 35-year-old already has 58 more runs than any other player in the tournament, having made a superb unbeaten century last time out and two fifties before that for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Maxwell says Kohli’s absence in the T20 World Cup would be welcome news for India’s rivals and described his unbeaten 82 in the 2016 edition against Australia as the best innings he has seen from an opponent player.

‘Virat Kohli is the most clutch player I have ever played against,’ the Australia all-rounder told ESPN .

“The first day I had a shocker, felt like I was struggling with the heat, was struggling with my bat swing” @Gmaxi_32 talks about how he goes about training, going from a ‘shocker’ of net one day to one of his best the next. ‘The innings he played against us in Mohali during the 2016 T20 World Cup is still the best innings I have ever seen been played against me.

‘His awareness of what he needs to do to win the game is just phenomenal. I hope India don’t pick him because it will be great to not come up against him.’

Asked about the scrutiny over Kohli’s place in India’s T20 side, Maxwell added: ‘It’s not surprising because there are 1.5 billion people in India and I reckon half of them are unbelievable cricketers!

‘It’s a hard team to get into. You look at India’s top T20 players which are all playing in this tournament. They are phenomenal players and there should be heat on every player.’

England are the reigning T20 World Cup champions following their victory in Australia in 2022 . Jos Buttler’s side smashed India in the semi-finals before beating Pakistan by five wickets in the showpiece event.
