Sims playing in the snow with a weird snowman in the background

The Sims 4 has lots of downloadable content in the forms of Expansion Packs, Game Packs, Stuff Packs, and more recently, Kits. These are all paid packages that add a plethora of new content to the game, whether it’s the ability to have a hot tub in your yard or the addition of magic and spells. Our The Sims 4 DLC guide details the best Expansion Packs, Game Packs, and Stuff Packs, according to the biggest Sims fans at Polygon.

The Sims 4 DLC, explained and priced

Expansion Packs typically add new gameplay systems, like seasons or the ability to own retail stores, while also adding tons of hairstyles, clothing, and furnishing objects. They cost $39.99 .

Game Packs are smaller than Expansion Packs, but they can also add systems like magic. They also include hairstyles, clothing, and furnishings, but much less than Expansion Packs. Game Packs cost $19.99 .

Stuff Packs are even smaller and usually only include a handful of hairstyles, clothing, and furniture items. Stuff Packs cost $9.99 .

Kits are even tinier than Stuff Packs and only include a few items, some of which add a new small mechanic to the game, like vacuuming. Kits are $4.99 .

Below we’ll talk about our favorite Expansion, Game, and Stuff Packs that add our favorite elements to The Sims 4 . Of course, you don’t need all (or any) of these to play the games, but these are the ones we like the most.

The Sims 4: City Living Expansion Pack

I do not know why, but the Apartment and City-themed Sims packs are always my favorite (**blows a kiss to The Sims 2: Apartment Life , my buggy beloved**). I like having NPC Sims live close by to my own Sims, and I like the immersion of having the world directly available for interaction — my Sims can wake up in the morning and order a coffee at the stand, just like I do!

City Living adds a bunch of unique neighborhoods in the metropolis of San Myshuno, each with its own aesthetic and quirks, as well as some cool furniture and clothes. You can also attend Sim Comic-Con, which I think is hilarious. — Petrana Radulovic

The Sims 4: Cats and Dogs Expansion Pack

The ability to give your Sims pets is a game changer (literally), thanks to Cats and Dogs . Adding animals to your household is fun, and it may be the thing your Sim family is missing. There’s also the welcome addition of Brindleton Bay, a beautiful cape town.

While the game is technically limited to cats and dogs, there’s a fox within the dog breeds and a raccoon in the cat breeds, if you want something a little bit more spicy. — Julia Lee

The Sims 4: Seasons Expansion Pack

In addition to adding the titular seasons to the game, the Seasons Expansion Pack adds lots of fun plants and holidays. The change in temperature and seasons also gives you an excuse to hook your Sim up with multiple outfits, rather than just having them switch from career clothes to their regular clothes every day. — JL

The Sims 4: Cottage Living Expansion Pack

There is no cozier Expansion Pack for The Sims 4 than Cottage Living . It pulls the best parts of The Sims 4 and makes them better. There are more animals to pet and befriend, like cows, foxes, and chickens. Gardening has been expanded, and I can do more than just tend to my flowers. I can grow pumpkins and other vegetables, and share the delights with a new community in Henford-on-Bagley.

Cottage Living has also done something that other Expansion Packs have failed to do for me. Primarily, I play The Sims 4 as a builder, and it’s less frequent that I let the families and homes I’ve built play out as stories in-game. But in Cottage Living , the community elements of the game added some structure to The Sims 4 that made gameplay feel as approachable as building. I wanted to explore the world, to pick mushrooms and meet locals, as a means of completing the given quests and side tasks. The small favors in Cottage Living don’t overwhelm the game with structure or instructions — they’re easy to ignore, if that’s your call — but create enough of a wireframe around my world that I want to engage in it more.

Focusing on building, Cottage Living also just has a lot of dang cute things to add to the home. Who doesn’t love a cottagecore cabin? — Nicole Carpenter

The Sims 4: Vampires Game Pack

I’m a sucker for the supernatural, and The Sims 4: Vampires delivers in spades. Vampire Sims have a unique array of powers that make them better, stronger, and scarier than other Sims. The trade-off is that they require plasma, which is most easily obtained by dazing and drinking from their friends and neighbors. Add in a fun array of dramatic makeup, stone gargoyles, and other haunting props to keep around your vampire mansion, and it’s a solid pack.

Supernatural Sims are always a blast, and the vampires have some very cool powers that they can unlock over time. Manipulate the emotions of those around you, or simply teleport to work. Each Vampire also has a dark form, which is twice as much dolly dress up per Sim. It’s a winning formula that only gets better when combined with other pieces of DLC. — Cass Marshall

The Sims 4: Parenthood Game Pack

I have already gone on record about how much I hate raising toddlers in The Sims 4 , but the Parenthood pack makes the whole process ... dare I say, enjoyable? Parenthood adds a ton of cute items, centered around family and kids. As a Sims player who prefers recreating realism versus going on funky supernatural adventures (don’t get me wrong — I still love funky supernatural adventures), packs that add the extra oomf of realism always do it for me.

Parenthood really adds some cute specific things, like kids going through phases, family projects, and a little family memo board to set curfews on! It’s the sort of life simulation that really gets me going with the Sims. — PR

The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff Pack

This is the only Stuff Pack that really tickles my fancy. The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff lets you make Tiny Homes, a special type of Residential Lot that comes with perks if you’re able to make it small enough. It also includes lots of space-saving objects, like a Murphy bed and bookshelves that also have TVs. — JL

The Sims 4: Nifty Knitting Stuff Pack

The Sims 4 ’s Nifty Knitting Stuff Pack is one of the essentials for me — I want my Sims to be able to do the stuff that I like to do. It’s a perfect hobby for a Sim, because it’s a way to pass the time and gain a skill, but it’s also another way to make money in the game. (Sims can sell their knitting project on an Esty-like shop called Plopsy.) When it came out in July 2020, I was also very impressed with the knitting animation in the game; knitting is notoriously difficult to get right in media .

Alongside the act of knitting, the Stuff Pack also added, to put it simply, a lot of cozy stuff — yarn balls, crochet and embroidery decorations, and a whole bunch of knitted sweaters. — NC

These Are the Only Sims 4  Expansions and Add-Ons You Need

The Sims 4 has helped me cope with quarantine , but I've been a fan of the series since I was young. In these games, you design a person, build them a house, and then take care of their every need. You can get your dream job and become a rocket scientist, make friends (or enemies), and even cheat your way to riches.

In it, I can live any kind of life, and if I'm ever tight on cash, a simple motherlode cheat code (or three) remedies the issue. With thousands of hours logged, I've yet to tire of the game—largely thanks to the huge library of add-ons.

See, The Sims 4 is awesome, but there's a catch. The base game is sometimes as cheap as $5 , and $40 at most. But that’s before the add-ons. With nine Expansion Packs, eight Game Packs, and 17 Stuff Packs available, it can cost you as much as $700 to get all the extra things. That's as much as a brand-new iPhone, a laptop, or the beginnings of a great savings account. It's all pretty tempting, but you don't need all that downloadable content (DLC) for The Sims 4 .

Below, I will go through every piece of DLC in the game. (I've tried them all!) First, I'll give an overview of my favorite $40 Expansion Packs and others I think you can skip. I'll do the same for all the $20 Game Packs available, which add a mix of features and items. And last are the $10 Stuff Packs, which add themed items for your house and Sims. The links for each pack go to PC/Mac redemption codes you can buy and enter into EA's Origin game store.

Updated November 2020: We added Snowy Escape and Journey to Batuu to our rankings.

Expansion Packs are the most feature-rich DLC, and that's why they usually cost $40 a piece. They change how you play. Each expansion adds a new world where your Sims can live, at least one new activity, new objects and venues, new items for your Sims, new household items, and things like new traits, careers, or skills.

  • Seasons ($40) : Is a life simulation without weather really a life simulation? I don't know why they weren't included in the first place, but this expansion adds spring, summer, fall, and winter. It also adds holidays, like Winterfest (Christmas) and Harvestfest (Thanksgiving), as well as nontraditional celebrations like "Rebate Day." The weather can alter how your Sims feel. They might get freaked out during thunderstorms and experience wonder at the first snow of the year. If you're only getting one expansion, this is the one you want.
  • Cats and Dogs ($40) : What's the point of starting a digital life without fuzzy friends? This expansion lets you create a pet from scratch or choose to adopt one. It also adds the veterinary job skill and career branch.

There's nothing wrong with these expansions, but they're $40 apiece, so unless a particular theme really registers with you, I don't think they're essential purchases.

  • Snowy Escape : This expansion adds a Kyoto-like world, mixing hot pot and Japanese-inspired vending machines with activities like bathhouses, skiing, and snowboarding. Its best feature is the addition of emotional depth via Sentiments (feelings about other Sims) and Lifestyles (traits your Sim can acquire). If you're bored of the same old gameplay, this pack is great, but it isn't essential.
  • Eco Lifestyle : This expansion adds pollution . Your Sim can improve their eco-footprint, vote, recycle, upcycle, and live in a shipping container. It's fun but not as essential as the expansion I recommend, which adds basic weather.
  • Discover University : This is only interesting to those who play with teenage Sims, but it does add some good clothing options and items for decorating or building your house. Discover University adds two colleges, plus the option to earn degrees, which get Sims better jobs and higher starting pay.
  • City Living : This adds San Myshuno, a bustling metropolis complete with apartments, karaoke bars, and frequent events. The worlds of The Sims can feel a little isolated, so if you want more excitement, this is a good option—just note that there aren’t any empty lots to build on.
  • Island Living : This pack gets you Sulani, a tropical paradise, plus a Conservationist career branch. You can clean up beaches, catch a tan, and go swimming. It also adds the "Off the Grid" lot feature, which lowers your utility bills since the home doesn’t use electricity or running water. Oceans make the gameplay more realistic. Also, there are mermaids!
  • Get Famous : Earn fame by posting on Simstagram, streaming, or filming, editing, and uploading videos. Your actions will build your Sim a positive or negative reputation. Fame brings lots of perks, like free gifts or easy promotions. On the other hand, you'll also encounter the darker aspects of fame like the paparazzi, weird eating habits, and fans that stalk you.
  • Get to Work : For some career paths, this pack lets you actively control your Sims while they're at work rather than having them attend on their own. Unfortunately, this feature only works for detective, doctor, and scientist jobs, so it's somewhat limited for the price. On the upside, it does give you the option to own retail businesses, and there's an alien world you can visit.
  • Get Together : This adds clubs to your game. You can create a club or join an existing one. Clubs are helpful for meeting new friends (or romantic interests), but the features added to this pack just aren't as game-changing as you'll get with other expansions.

screen still from Sims 4

Game Packs can add a lot to your Sims experience but not as much as an Expansion Pack. They cost $20 and include a number of new options for designing/dressing your Sims and house furnishings. Sometimes they even include a new world, though they might be worlds only made for visiting, not permanent living. Game Packs also add skills or mechanics, though they're less game-changing.

  • Realm of Magic ($20) : If you've ever wanted to visit your own version of a certain school for witches and wizards in The Sims , this pack is for you. It adds the Spellcaster occult Sim class and allows you to choose which path of magic your Sims will follow. Adopt a familiar, get into duels, craft at a cauldron, and wear some of the best clothes yet. And yes, if you're wondering, you can fly around on a broom.
  • Strangerville ($20) : Unlike most Game Packs, Strangerville includes an entire story line, making it feel almost like a full expansion. In a Roswell-like setting, your Sim will be tasked with solving the mystery behind unmarked vans, possessed neighbors, and secret listening devices that plague your new neighborhood. You can also join the Military career and (eventually) don a tinfoil hat.
  • Parenthood ($20) : This pack is a must-have if you're completing the 100 Baby Challenge , but if your Sims ever have families, it's a good purchase regardless. Your Sims can develop parenting skills that translate into powerful buffs once their kids age up. The pack also adds fun touches like school projects, mess-making, and teenage mood swings, which make playing with a big Sim family much more realistic.

Many of these Game Packs are fun, but they're $20 apiece, so unless a pack really interests you, pass on it for now.

  • Jungle Adventure : This pack revolves around Selvadorada, a vacation world where your Sims can discover temples, artifacts, and ruins. The adventures are cool, but since you can't live in Selvadorada, Jungle Adventure isn't as enticing as some of the other options.
  • Outdoor Retreat : Like Jungle Adventure , Outdoor Retreat comes with a vacation world. This time, your Sims will travel to Granite Falls. They can camp, build their herbalism skill, and more. But again, you cannot live in the woods completely, so it feels limiting.
  • Vampires : The Sims community has a love-hate relationship with this game pack. Your Sim can become a vampire and build up their vampiric skills to allow for powers that let them unlock doors, fly around as a bat, or stop their hygiene need depletion. The included household and house-building items are unique, too. The downside? You have to live in fear of other vampires. As in, don't forget to lock the door when your Sims go to sleep, or Vlad might come feed on them at 3 am.
  • Spa Day : This pack has one great thing going for it, which is the Wellness skill. Your Sims can do yoga routines to make them energized, focused, and inspired. As the name implies, the pack also adds spas, where your Sims can relax in the sauna, get a massage, or take a mud bath. The household and house-building items are nice, but unless you want your Sims to hit the spa every day, you may want to grab other Game Packs first.
  • Dine Out : If you love Hell's Kitchen and really want your Sims to build and manage a restaurant, this pack will be perfect for you. Otherwise, it may get boring pretty quickly. It includes some cool decor items and bonus cooking recipes for your Sims, but the gameplay for managing the restaurant isn't great.

Stuff Packs are $10 bundles of Create-a-Sim items (like outfits and new hairstyles) and things to help build or decorate your house. I've included some links to YouTube so you can see what's in each Pack.

  • Fitness Stuff ($10) : This is the best Stuff Pack because of one feature: earbuds. Earbuds can passively replenish your Sims' fun need. They're awesome—and a digital lifesaver if your Sim is the mom of 50 kids and counting, like mine. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Tiny Living Stuff ($10) : This pack is stuffed to the brim with tiny home goodness. You'll get Murphy beds, space-saving objects, and some of the coolest color schemes the game has to offer. This also adds new residential lot types. Build a small enough home and your Sims will learn skills twice as fast. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Laundry Day Stuff ($10) : If you don't mind having one more task to attend to, this Pack adds laundry. Your Sims' clothes will get dirty, and they'll have to wash and dry them. My favorite feature is the ability to check pockets for spare change. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Backyard Stuff ($10) : From water slides to bird feeders, this pack lets you personalize your virtual backyard. This pack has some of the best outdoor furniture available in The Sims 4 . ( Here's what's included .)
  • Nifty Knitting Stuff ($10) : This community-voted pack adds the knitting skill and a plethora of corresponding items. Your Sims can knit sweaters, craft tchotchkes, and reminisce on the newly-added rocking chair. It also adds Plopsy, an Etsy-esque site where Sims can sell handmade items. If you're sick of the same old creative gameplay options, pick this pack up. ( Here's what's included .)

There are a lot of Stuff Packs, and they're each $10. I don't think you need these below, but it really depends on where your Sims adventure is taking you.

  • Toddler Stuff : If your household has toddlers, this pack is a great one to add to your collection. It adds a ton of toddler clothes and hairstyles, which are sorely lacking from the game. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Kids Room Stuff : This is another good option for Simmers with young ones in their families. The pack is heavily focused on bedroom stuff, with bright furniture and themed decorations. If you play with kids, you'll like it. If you don't, skip it. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Bowling Night Stuff : I have zero interest in building a functioning bowling alley for my Sims, but if that appeals to you, this is the pack you want. The pack does have some of the coolest-looking furniture. The pieces are retro, sort of a tacky midcentury-modern vibe, and they have a sick blue, orange, and brown color scheme. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Movie Hangout Stuff : The home decor and house-building items shine here, too. They're bright and bohemian, and I usually place at least one item from this pack in every home of mine. You'll also get the option to watch movies, either on an existing TV or on the outdoor projector. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Romantic Garden Stuff : If you like landscaping, you'll love this Pack. It includes tons of gorgeous, colorful flowers and other garden decor items, all with a romantic Victorian theme. Think things like moss-covered statues and charming arches. But that's about it. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Perfect Patio Stuff : Not everyone cares about their patio. Aside from a few new bars and grill items, the best feature of this Stuff Pack is the addition of a hot tub. Your Sims can take a dip to relax, but there are other interactions with the object, too. And yes, in case you're curious, you can Woo-Hoo in the tub. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Cool Kitchen Stuff : This Pack has some neat kitchen decor, with frosted-glass cabinet doors and a few practical clutter items. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Vintage Glamour Stuff : This Pack is stuffed with opulence, like elegant hairstyles, floor-length evening gowns, and black-tie tuxedos. It also adds a Butler option, which lets you hire someone to do your dishes, cook your meals, and watch your kiddos. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Luxury Party Stuff : If, and only if, you like throwing virtual soirees, this pack is a worthwhile purchase. It also contains some of the best formalwear you'll find in an add-on. You'll also get a party table complete with a food fountain, which is a cool-looking item, but I've found it to be glitchy. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Moschino Stuff : This Stuff Pack is one big product placement, which left a bad taste in lots of Simmers' mouths, my own included. It does have some cool decor and build items, and a few interesting fashion pieces. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Spooky Stuff : This pack will come in handy for Halloween parties and maybe some witchy outfits, but that's about it. Unless you're trying to re-create Halloweentown in your save file, this Stuff Pack doesn't need to be at the top of your list. ( Here's what's included .)
  • My First Pet Stuff : This Pack garnered a lot of flak from the Sims community, largely because people felt like the items should have been included with the Cats and Dogs Expansion Pack. If pets are a big part of your gameplay, you'll probably still like it. ( Here's what's included .)
  • Star Wars: Journey to Batuu : This is my least-favorite Sims 4 add-on. It adds a vacation world and a bunch of Star Wars shenanigans, like the ability to own a lightsaber or droid, or interact with Kylo Ren. The Build/Buy items are okay, but I find the gameplay is lacking. If you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, you might like it, but for myself (and many others), this feels like a cash grab. Your Sims can't even use The Force! ( Here's what's included .)

Image may contain Human Person Collage Advertisement Poster and People

Before your add-on library is fully stocked, you can almost always get bundle deals through the EA Origin store or the Electronic Arts site . It's a way to save some cash if you are planning on buying several different packs. The bundle deals run year-round.

There are frequent sales, typically once every couple of months. These seasonal sales are your best bet if you're trying to save on just one or two packs. You can find them around the holidays, around E3, and a few other times throughout the year. Check the Origin store , Amazon or the EA website frequently to see if there are discounts running.

YouTubers to watch: If you're still stuck on what to get, head to YouTube. There’s a huge community of creators that make videos like building and household item overviews, gameplay and build compilations, and more. Some of my favorite simmers are Kelsey Impicciche (and her content on Buzzfeed Multiplayer ), Aveline , SpringSims , Deligracy , and OshinSims .

Modding: If you're computer-savvy and prepared to deal with some potential headaches, you can add more items to your game for free by modifying your game with "Custom Content." Mods let you add new furniture, makeup, clothing, and decor by dragging files into certain folders on your computer. They can be a good, free way to make your game more personalized.

On the other hand, downloading mods can break your game or make your Sims' appearances glitchy, so do your research and back up your save files before you dive in.

It can also be a huge pain to try to locate broken mods. I use The Sims Resource to find new stuff, and I organize new downloads into dated folders to try and make the process of finding broken mods easier.

Mod at your own risk! And when in doubt, just cheat .

The Sims 4 Custom Content: World Traveller Aspiration Overview

TS4 x64 2021 10 20 16 30 56

A custom Aspiration for The Sims 4 that caught my attention recently is the World Traveller Aspiration by KiraSims4Mods . It reminded me of The Sims 3 World Adventures and when you would take your Sims to explore around the world. However, this time it would be some popular locations in The Sims 4 universe instead, some of which I haven’t visited in a long time.

The aspiration itself has four levels to complete, each with four different tasks. As the Custom Aspiration focuses on several different locations in The Sims 4, you will need to own The Sims 4 Snowy Escape, City Living and Island Living expansion packs as well as The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure and Outdoor Retreat.

Once you have created your Sim in Create A Sim or changed an existing Sims Aspiration, you will find the World Traveller Aspiration under the Location Category .

To find out more about Kira’s Custom Aspirations, click here .

With my Sim ready it was time to get started on the Aspiration!

Once your Sim has completed the World Traveller Aspirations, they will be awarded $2,000, the Great Storyteller and Worldly Knowledge Reward Traits.

  • Great Storyteller – Great Storytellers always succeed at telling bigger and better stories!
  • Worldly Knowledge – These Sims are better at socializing during Social Events and enjoy ordering food from market stalls. They also can “Negotiate a Discount” at market stalls, which gives them an advantage over other bargaining techniques.

Kira has also included a variety of new Whims for your Sims to earn Aspiration Points from as part of the World Traveller Aspiration . Here are just a few of the new Whims you will find in game.

  • Drink Sakura Tea
  • Ask about Omiscan Ruins
  • Harvest Produce at Festival
  • Go on Vacation in Granite Falls
  • Buy a Flea Market Object

Download & Install

To install this custom aspiration, simply extract all the .package  files to  Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods  folder. Make sure you have Mods / CC enabled in your game options!

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure

Exploring the jungle & finding the temple ruins.

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: Where to explore the Jungle

Click to Enlarge. There is a large jungle to explore, so let's get started!

Players can explore a large jungle in The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure. Exploring unprepared can be dangerous, so this guide's focus is to help you be prepared and provide some guidance on what to watch for while exploring. Getting started is as simple as using your Sim's phone to 'travel', selecting a cabin in Selvadorada and paying rent for as many days as you can afford. If your focus is going to be exploration, pick something cheap and save money for supplies and antidote if you get poisoned !

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure Gameplay

Help with the Jungle Adventure Game Pack and its many minor features, focused on an archaeologist..

The Sims 4 Video

How to Start: Bring Supplies

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: Ease your Sim's bladder using these bushes. You can also recover energy with a nap.

Click to Enlarge. Ease your Sim's bladder with these bushes, strewn about the jungle. You can also take a nap inside. I suggest you do that in the opposite order.

Exploring the Jungle in The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure 's Selvadorada can be challenging, because your Sims will be far from the comforts of home. Having a tent to sleep in is a huge help (outdoor retreat), but you'll also need food. Taking sack lunches or harvested fruits is recommended. A tent is not absolutely required, as your Sim can nap in a bush (as well as satisfy their bladder need) in order to replenish energy.

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: Where and How to buy supplies for adventuring in the jungle

How to buy supplies: click the objects on the table to queue up each purchase. Be sure to get a machete, fire foam, and antidotes if available.

Your Sim can get into an awful mood from poor hygiene (or being set on fire), so waterfall in a bottle is the perfect solution. You can buy them at the stands near the bar in the marketplace district. There you will also find emergency items that can save a Sim's life or at least prevent a seriously foul mood

The process of buying these supplies is a bit weird - they're on the table when a Sim shopkeeper is there and the market's open. You click the items individually to purchase them. The items present at the shop change a few times each day.

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: Clearing a path with a machete

Click to Enlarge. Clearing a path with a machete. These gates lead from area to area, so clearing them is required to proceed.

Grab a second machete (or more). They are only $120 Simoleons yet save you a lot of trouble should your Sim fumble and lose one while cutting through vines. I highly suggest you get a few of the Waterfall in a Bottle to help your Sim from growing too uncomfortable due to hygiene issues, along with Fire Foam . Your Sim can be immolated, and you don't want to die in a fire because you failed at a trap. Always get Antidotes if you see them available. They seem a tad more rare and can save a Sim's life. I'm not yet sure how easily/often they are acquired but will edit this later.

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: Insects attacking a Sim. Having bug repellent helps a lot.

Click to Enlarge. A Sim under attack by insects. Having repellent on hand allows your Sim to ward them off automatically. You never know what you'll encounter, so buy as many supplies as you can afford.

Where to Begin the Jungle Adventure

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure:

Click to Enlarge. Begin your trek into the Jungle by going to Belomisia Trailhead and clear your first bramble-covered gate.

The Jungle is all around us in Selvadorada, but we want a specific place to begin our journey into the unknown. Head to Belomisia Trailhead, located on the western side of the travel screen in Selvadorada, to begin searching places overgrown with brambles. You can clear them with a machete if you took my advice to bring supplies, or your Sim can use their hands and get a little worn out in the process.

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: The Omiscan Royal Baths

Omiscan Royal Baths, a secluded pool hidden in the Selvadoradian Jungle.

What you find behind each area appears to be random, though it may lead to another area altogether. You won't get any loading screens, but will sometimes need to use one of the gateway arches to travel between two areas as they're not traversable by foot. Realize also that you can move the camera overhead to backtrack if you get stuck. You can see very far and use the camera to find out of the way brambles to clear as well as dig sites.

Things to Look For: Treasures and Dig Sites

sims 4 travel expansion pack

At top: a treasure chest, which are found randomly in the jungle. Bottom: an excavation site, for use with the Archaeology Skill.

There are a few things to note that you will find or encounter in the Jungle, with some others as yet undiscovered by me. I'll update this with more info as the picture becomes more clear:

  • Bramble Covered Gateways - These lead you to other areas, sometimes small areas with items of interest, or secret areas such as the Omiscan Royal Baths. Accessing these sometimes leads to a choose-your-own-adventure popup. Having certain skills can allow you to get a good result, but you may also use supplies to help animals or escape dangers. One unit of that specific supply will be consumed in the process.
  • Treasure Chests - Sometimes they're hidden in plain sight. There are a lot of trees, so moving the camera around can reveal chests you might not have noticed.
  • Dig Sites - The best artifacts are found deep in the jungle within dig sites. Use the Archaeology skill (automatic) to extract valuable artifacts and treasure. Players will occasionally dig up bone dust, which can be used to save a Sim (only when poisoned ). You give it to a local vendor to get the antidote. Find it under the social menu.
  • Tree of Emotion - I believe there are at least two of these, maybe more. The berries can help you pass tests inside the Hidden Omiscan Temple.
  • Omiscan Royal Baths - A hidden area that is behind a gateway. Swimming in the waters here will make your Sim energized.
  • Locked Gates - ????? I do not yet know what is behind these! They state that they may unlock on a future vacation in the Jungle. It may very well be that after clearing one temple you can go back and find them open, ready to be cleared and providing another temple to explore.

Deeper in the Jungle: The Temple

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: Exploring deeper into the jungle

Cross deeper into the jungle. You can use your camera to look for clues as to where to go next.

If you took my advice to bring supplies and maybe a tent, it should not be impossible to find the temple within a day. Simply keep your eyes peeled for all of the gates and explore them. With adequate supplies, you can avoid most of the jungle's most inconvenient obstacles. Since the location of the temple may be completely random, there's no point in me giving you a full walkthrough of the jungle. However, I did notice something that MAY be relevant.

The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure: The Temple Entrance

The gateway to the temple had glowing fireflies when my Sim was nearby, and featured this large statue. This may be random, but regardless the temple was rather far in. Don't worry - the locked gates do not block your access to the temple.

I've been trying to get past the locked gates since this pack was released, I have yet to be successful regardless of how many prior visits a sim has made. I've become more disgusted with this particular 'feature' than I perhaps should, but c'mon now.... That isn't anything but a tease at this point. Uhg....

The best Sims 4 Expansion Pack in 2024

Our guide to the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack

A header image showcasing the best Sims 4 expansion packs.

If you’ve been enjoying the free-to-play life simulation game The Sims 4 , then you’re likely wondering which would be the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack for you. The best Expansion Packs are those that introduce whole new worlds, a raft of new items, and loads of fresh mechanics to enhance your experience.

Given the number on offer and the fact that buying all of the Expansion Packs would be pretty pricey, you might be wondering which would be the best for your specific wants and needs. After all, everyone plays The Sims 4 in their own way, with some choosing to focus solely on character creation or the in-depth building mechanics, while others prefer a more well-rounded life simulation experience. We’ve created this guide to the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack in order to help you choose, offering top recommendations in a number of popular categories.

We have considered a range of factors that might make one particular Expansion Pack the most worthwhile for you. In addition to exploring what we consider to be the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack overall, we also have some great options for those who prefer to spend their time building, picking out clothes and hair for their Sims, or engaging in hands-on gameplay.

Best Sims 4 Expansion Pack 2024

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

The Sims 4 Seasons DLC

1. The Sims 4 Seasons

The Sims 4 Seasons offers the perfect balance of new gameplay, useful build mode items, and versatile clothes and hair options.

The Sims 4 Seasons is our top choice when it comes to the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack overall. We consider it to be an essential expansion given the sheer amount of compelling new content that it brings to the table. As the name would suggest, The Sims 4 Seasons focuses on introducing various real-world seasons into the game, with different weather events and a rotating array of activities available during each one.

While the sunny spring and summer seasons offer the perfect chance to get to grips with the new gardening career and skill set, it’s also ideal for those who like watching their Sims unwind in the sun. Brief storms can impact the well-being of your Sims in exciting ways, with those scared of the thunder cowering inside while others can enjoy splashing around in puddles. The arrival of fall and winter then transforms maps with an attractive layer of hazel leaves or a light dusting of snowfall, offering the chance to build (or destroy) snowmen and, of course, get into snowball fights. The ability to design separate outfits for different temperatures adds a welcome extra degree of customization, giving you more opportunities to experiment with looks and means that your Sims will dress realistically depending on the weather.

Outside of these new mechanics, The Sims 4 Seasons has plenty to offer in terms of build mode items, clothes, and hair. Seasonal decorations can add a lot of flair to your builds, and the abundance of versatile clothing options themed around both hot and cold weather massively expands your wardrobe. You get the option to ‘Woohoo’ in a leaf pile, too, which we think is well worth the price of admission alone.

The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle DLC

2. The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle

The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle packs an attractive new world and a tonne of sleek, modern build mode items alongside some intriguing new mechanics. It’s a must-have Expansion Pack for those seeking to build contemporary homes.

The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle stands above the rest if you’re after the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack for building. Sustainable living is the main theme of the pack, which introduces the new world of Evergreen Harbor and challenges you to live environmentally. The overall look of the world reacts to your eco-footprint, becoming grungy and unpleasant if you let the trash pile up or use lots of electricity. It’s an engaging mechanic, but we think the best part of this pack is easily its build mode items.

The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle includes a range of new furniture options inspired by modern designs. Its new windows and doorways are incredibly useful, while the new chairs and shelves look much slicker than those of the base game. Environmental elements like solar panels or portable generators can help add character to your creations, whether you’re trying to create a fancy apartment building or a self-sufficient underground bunker.

The clothes and hair included in the Expansion Pack are fantastic additions, too. There are some stylish modern hairstyles for both masculine and feminine presenting Sims in here, plus a good selection of eclectic patched-up blouses, shirts, and jeans that are perfect for that upcycled look.

One thing to bear in mind, however, is that this pack introduces Neighbourhood Action Plans that are passed by vote across the week, and some (like one that forces all Sims to wear an ugly paper bag on their heads at all times) can be pretty annoying. Thankfully, there is an option to disable NPC voting, which stops it from becoming an issue.

The Sims 4 Get to Work DLC

3. The Sims 4 Get to Work

Few Expansion Packs offer quite as much hands-on gameplay as The Sims 4 Get to Work , which transforms your Sim’s career as a Doctor, Scientist, or Detective into a much more interactive experience.

The Sims 4 Get to Work is our recommendation for those looking for the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack for gameplay. Centered around improving the experience of sending your Sims to work, The Sims 4 Get to Work introduces three active careers (Detective, Doctor, and Scientist) that give you loads to do. Rather than seeing your Sim vanish off into the void for a few hours every day, active careers offer full control of your Sim while they are at the workplace.

We’re particularly big fans of the Detective career, which plays out like an off-beat crime drama as you travel to crime scenes, collect witness statements, and interrogate suspects. Doctor and Scientist offer a similar level of depth, and it is hugely enjoyable to discover everything that each new career has to offer. Some of the clothes, hair,  and furniture options included as career rewards are very compelling, too, giving you an extra incentive to get to grips with each of them.

The Sims 4 Get to Work adds the ability to set up your own retail business, too. Although this isn’t quite as fleshed-out as the full-blown careers, creating your own cute bookshop or charming bakery is a pretty alluring prospect. The new build mode items are predominantly mainly focused on these retail settings, so this is a pack to avoid if you’re purely searching for new ways to decorate your homes.

Bizarrely, this pack also adds alien Sims that you can encounter in the wild or during your career as a scientist. Alien Sims sport bright green skin and the ability to disguise themselves as regular Sims. With the option to create your own Alien Sims, this is a fun little bonus for those keen on experimenting with supernatural life states.

The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack

4. The Sims 4 Cottage Living

The Sims 4 Cottage Living contains lots of fantastic options for those looking for more ways to customize their Sims with super cute clothes and stylish hair.

We think that The Sims 4 Cottage Living is comfortably the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack for clothes and hair. Predominantly themed around a countryside vibe, the selection of cozy baggy sweaters, rustic cardigans, and fashionable dungaree shorts here are perfect for almost any setting. They work well across all age groups, too, with a good set of choices for masculine and feminine presenting Sims. Some standout favorites include the adorable strawberry earrings and a pair of stylish octagonal glasses, which both wouldn’t feel out of place on a viral fashion-inspo Pinterest board. There are plenty of good hairstyles here, too.

The pack’s world, Henford on Bagley, is another highlight. It’s inspired by small English villages and is not only a treat to explore but also makes for the perfect backdrop to show off your new looks. The small handful of very old-fashioned build mode items in the pack are also a blessing if you want to create more traditional European homes.

In terms of mechanics, The Sims 4 Cottage Living introduces farming, which sees you raising livestock like cows and chickens or growing vegetables to sustain your Sims, as well as entering oversized crop growing contests during Henford on Bagley’s village fair to win celebratory ribbons.

The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs Expansion Pack

5. The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs

The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs is a great first Expansion Pack because of its very approachable theme. Alongside plenty of breeds of cats and dogs like Scottish Folds and Corgis, it adds a solid world and a good few mechanics.

Thanks to the wide appeal of its central theme, The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs is the best Sims 4 Expansion Pack for beginners. The option to add both cats and dogs to your family is brilliant if you’re eager to recreate your real-life pets. They can also be fully customized in the Create-A-Sim menu, with a range of breeds to choose from and even the option to draw their unique coats by hand. Like Sims, cats and dogs have their own personalities and can develop strong bonds with their owners if you take the time to get to know them.

Brindleton Bay, the new world included with the pack, is perfect for beginners, too. It’s a decent size with 16 lots, including a fair few blank ones for building. The coastal theme lends it a unique aesthetic that feels very distinct from the worlds of the base game. Brindleton Bay is also home to a range of locations designed specifically for your Sims and their pets, like a dog park and a vet clinic. This latter location also allows you to begin a career as a vet, treating local pets.

The build mode items here are mainly focused on the pet theme and range from automatic food bowls to fish tanks. There are still a few good items for builders, though, including porthole windows that can really help sell the town’s coastal look. The clothes and hair on offer are a similar story, with the majority of items geared towards the pets themselves, with a couple of options for human Sims thrown in.

If you're curious about how many pieces of DLC have been added to The Sims 4 since it first launched, we've got a rundown of all of the Expansions, Game Packs, Stuff Packs, and Kits in order of release so you can find the latest ones to play.

Since The Sims 4 's initial release in 2014, developer Maxis has produced a constant stream of extra content for Simmers - and it can get a little overwhelming when deciding which Expansions or Game Packs to pick up.

With each new iteration of The Sims, these DLCs have always been a constant, from Crystal Creations' addition of the Gemology Skill to weather or furry friends that accompany your Sims throughout their lives, and magical Occults like Vampires  and Werewolves .

Below, we've listed all Packs in The Sims 4 in order of their release, so you can check for any you have missed. We'll also go over the key differences between each DLC pack so you can pick the right one for you and your Sims game .

How many DLC Packs are there?

As of March 2024, there are currently 74 pieces of DLC in The Sims 4 , with Kits having the largest selection at 27 in total. By type, these are broken down as follows:

The Sims 4 Expansion Pack list

Expansion Packs are the largest DLC type on offer, providing content like all-new gameplay features, worlds, and additional CAS & Build/Buy items.

Shown in order of release, here are all 15 of the Expansion Packs currently available:

  • The Sims 4: Get to Work (March 2015)
  • The Sims 4: Get Together (December 2015)

All Game Packs in The Sims 4

Game packs, of which there are currently 12 , are a DLC type that was first introduced in The Sims 4. These are generally smaller than their Expansion Pack counterparts  but include more content than the likes of Stuff Packs. These are:

The Sims 4 Stuff Packs listed

Stuff Packs are the second-smallest DLC types , and have been present in the series since The Sims 2. They include a smaller set of items, while never including the likes of a new world, for example.

While Stuff Pack releases have been less common in recent times, Home Chef Hustle broke that trend in September 2023 after Paranormal Stuff was released in January of 2021, and there are now 20  of them in total:

  • The Sims 4: Luxury Party Stuff  (May 2015)
  • The Sims 4: Perfect Patio Stuff  (June 2015)
  • The Sims 4: Cool Kitchen Stuff  (August 2015)

  • The Sims 4: Crystal Creations Stuff (February 2024)

All Kits in The Sims 4

As the smallest DLC offering for The Sims 4 , Kits are the smallest (and cheapest) DLC type, featuring a very small selection of objects, clothes or gameplay elements catered around a certain theme.

Typically, it seems as if multiple Kits are released at one time, though there are exceptions to this. So far, 27 have been released, with the Castle Estate and Goth Galore Kits being the newest:

  • The Sims 4: Bust the Dust Kit  (March 2021)
  • The Sims 4: Country Kitchen Kit  (March 2021)
  • The Sims 4: Throwback Fit Kit  (March 2021)
  • The Sims 4: Courtyard Oasis Kit  (May 2021)
  • The Sims 4: Industrial Loft Kit  (August 2021)
  • The Sims 4: Fashion Street Kit (October 2021)
  • The Sims 4: Incheon Arrivals Kit  (October 2021)

All Sims 4 Expansion Packs, Ranked

Image of Bethany Barber

There are quite a few Expansion Packs available for purchase in The Sims 4, making it hard for even diehard Sims 4 fans to track what's on the market. That's why we've broken down all available Expansion Packs in the game and ranked them on their value.

Best and Worst Sims 4 Expansion Packs

14 - cats & dogs.

sims 4 travel expansion pack

While the promise of pets in The Sims 4 sounds like a dream come true for most players, the execution did not turn out ideal, as fans hoped. For one, the expansion pack only featured cats and dogs, with no additional pets. Players considered this a step backward from previous Sims games, which included pets like horses.

It doesn't help EA released the My First Pets Stuff pack shortly afterward, which many feel included content that should have been provided in the original expansion. Many fans felt like EA broke up a pack into two parts and favored greed over effort. Overall, it lacks content to justify the price tag.

13 - Snowy Escape

sims 4 travel expansion pack

While Snowy Escape seemed to have a lot of promise at the beginning of its release, time has worn on this pack. Gameplay quickly becomes repetitive , and the beautiful world can feel isolating compared to the rest of the neighborhoods in Sims 4. The pack is gorgeous and culturally rich, but something about it just feels hollow .

I think this pack could have performed much better as a game pack for half of the cost. There's insufficient immersion or detailed world-building to justify the $40 price tag. If players were given a pack revamp as EA did with the Spa Day Game Pack, we could see this one doing an about-face in quality.

12 - Get Famous

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Get Famous is a fun pack if you take it at face value . You can make your Sims famous, live in a Hollywood-inspired neighborhood, and even get rich via multiple different avenues (e.g. become an actress, singer, or even streamer). The variety in this Expansion Pack is promising, and we love the fame and reputation system.

The issue with Get Famous is actually the opposite of the above entries: it's actually too immersed in the larger world of Sims 4, and makes famous and meeting celebrities far too easy. Once you own Get Famous and play as a non-famous Sim, you'll begin to feel as if fame is actually rather mundane and easy to achieve.

11 - Island Living

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Similarly to Snowy Escape, Island Living gives players a culturally diverse and well-planned world that allows them to bask in a tropical paradise. The clothing and build items are stunning, but it is missing a deeper cohesion with the rest of the world in The Sims 4. Going over to Sulani always feels like you're playing a new game entirely.

One advantage Island Living has is its addition of mermaids. While their gameplay is limited compared to Vampires and Werewolves, they're still a great gameplay feature. We also love the part-time job system , though it was made irrelevant by gigs added to the base game.

10 - City Living

sims 4 travel expansion pack

In the years since its release, City Living has become rather forgettable; it just doesn't seem to capture the same interest it once did for Sims 4 players. Some of that might be the extremely dated style of the pack or even the vaguely cultural feel of the game that seems inauthentic and gentrified at times. Maxis has majorly improved its representation and diversity since the release of this pack, at least.

City Living has major perks, however: you can chase a political career, get the most out of apartment living, and adopt a unique lifestyle that isn't found in other packs. There's a lot to love about this Expansion Pack, but maybe it's time to refresh.

9 - Eco Lifestyle

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Playing as a community member in Eco Lifestyle is a lot of fun, but it can quickly become boring—especially if your neighbors win with their own community initiatives . What if you want to play in the world to simply recycle and craft items, but now you have to cut off your power every week?

This pack would have been much more enjoyable if players were given more executive power. While I understand it's kind of the point of Eco Lifestyle to have to work together with your community, this sort of lack of power would be more suited for a Game Pack.

8 - Horse Ranch

sims 4 travel expansion pack

If you're just basing the rating of the Horse Ranch pack on its gorgeous aesthetics , it would score towards the top. That being said, I immediately noticed some glaring issues with this pack. The exclusion of unicorns, a horse pack staple in other Sims games, is one that can't be ignored. Rabbit hole horse events, awkward animations, and limited animal options (horses, mini-goats, and mini-sheep are all you get) also take away from the experience.

Nectar-making, while fun and profitable, can be a bit too easy to game for money. Ranch hands and new events are pretty engaging to play with, but may become boring after a while . A fan of horses will like this pack a lot and have hours of fun, while those who are less biased towards horses and Western style may quickly grow tired of it. There is still enough in Build/Buy and CAS to keep even those players using the expansion, however.

7 - Cottage Living

sims 4 travel expansion pack

There's a lot to like about Cottage Living, but it falls a bit short if you aren't deep into the niche of pastoral life. While  taking care of farm animals  and living a quaint lifestyle is entertaining, it will not work for every Sim you want to play. Even a Cottage Living lover could meet their limit of enjoyment after a while of use.

I love the style of this pack and the introduction of adorable animals to care for in the quaint village offered. That being said, the gameplay style is very focused on working outdoors, whereas the best Expansion Packs work across a variety of play styles. As such, it has niche appeal.

6 - Get Together

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Make your own clubs , go to a coffee shop, and enjoy the nightclubs late into the evening with the Get Together Expansion Pack. It's not a perfect DLC, but it holds an inherent value that has stood the test of time; many players still love and use cafes and the club creation system. Even if you never visit the world again or use any of the CAS items, you'll still find yourself with plenty of the framework of Get Together to enjoy for years of gameplay.

5 - Discover University

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Just like High School Years, Discover University allows Sims to flesh out more of their life stages, giving them an intermediary period between teenage years and adulthood . They can live in dorms, decide their career path, and even become a part of school activities.

Going to college could have been a boring and tedious experience in Sims 4, but developers managed to make a pack with tons of realistic aspects , while still being fun. Your Sim won't just go to college; they have to be accepted based on grades. Grades in college aren't a breeze, so try and limit the partying! They also have to manage loans or attempt to secure a scholarship. Gameplay is king in this pack, giving you tons to do .

4 - Get to Work

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Get to Work is part of the old guard of Sims 4 Expansion Packs, so some players don't even give it much thought these days. But it's important to give this pack props for how much it added to The Sims 4, even if subtly. Things that are now considered staples of gameplay , like owning a retail store or taking your Sim to the hospital to give birth, are due to Get to Work.

Your Sims will benefit immensely from you buying this pack, especially if you have a Sim you want to become a career professional. It strikes a great balance between mundane and over-stimulating gameplay, giving players a realistic and engaging experience.

3 - High School Years

sims 4 travel expansion pack

High School Years was a late release into The Sims 4 Expansion Pack list, but it still added much-needed content to the franchise. With this pack, players can now experience a fleshed-out high school experience with their Sims. Take them to prom, have them join clubs, lead them towards graduation, and even take them out for thrifting and bubble tea.

This pack is loaded with a new world, tons of CAS and Build/Buy Items, and more gameplay than any player could ask for. High School Years is also much more modern in tone/style than lots of packs, which helps a game made in 2014 feel more relevant to today's fashion and culture .

2 - Growing Together

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Despite its late debut (it's the thirteenth expansion pack released for Sims 4), Growing Together has shown itself to be an unforgettable expansion pack with a lot of value. It is an improvement upon the ideas introduced in the Parenthood game pack, but with a truly holistic approach to the ideas of family.

The modern casual clothing, contemporary suburban build/buy items, and gameplay assets are all useful and work well with other packs. On top of integration with the rest of the Sims 4 packs, Growing Together provides subtle additions like Family Dynamics . I can hardly imagine the game without these details anymore.

1 - Seasons

sims 4 travel expansion pack

There's a reason the Seasons Expansion pack is consistently rated as the best option for DLCs in The Sims 4, and it's mainly immersion . This pack fits seamlessly into your game at large, adding dynamic weather and even event planning . The clothing, decor, build items , and assets in-game are numerous.

You don't necessarily play Seasons as a pack, but rather Seasons adds to your everyday Sims gameplay. There's not even a full world included with Seasons, yet it still maintains a big presence in the mind of Sims 4 players. Having a pack that adds so much content to your game that you can't imagine playing without it is what I gauge every Sims 4 Expansion Pack against.

The Sims 4: Ranking Every Expansion Pack From Worst To Best

The Sims 4 has plenty of great expansion packs. Some of them really enhance the gameplay, while others fall just short of expectations.

  • The Sims 4 expansion packs bring new gameplay mechanics and features, such as interactive careers, occult sims, and running a retail store.
  • Some expansions, like Get To Work and Get Famous, have had glitches and repetitive gameplay, while others, like Get Together and Snowy Escape, offer versatile and underrated features.
  • The best value for money expansions include Seasons, which adds depth to the game with weather and holiday traditions, and Discover University, which offers a detailed university experience with loans, clubs, and activities.

Since the release of The Sims 4 , players have seen 14 different expansion packs, covering a range of topics and adding various new features to the game. Each one brings something new to the table, with focuses including pets, new careers, different lifestyles, and, of course, extreme weather conditions.

RELATED: The Sims 4: Mods That Improve Child Gameplay

It's not just things like new Create-a-Sim and build mode items that The Sims 4 's expansion packs bring with them though, but also new gameplay mechanics, and, in some cases, even brand-new worlds. But which ones offer the best value for money and do some expansions add more to the game than others? Well, here, those questions are answered and all of The Sims 4 expansion packs are ranked.

Updated August 23rd, 2023: This List has been updated to include a video version of the article. The video version details every entry in the piece, showing off each game for readers who have never seen the gameplay in action.

14 Get To Work

Get To Work is the earliest expansion and it shows. The main focus of this pack is interactive careers. It introduces a doctor, detective, and scientist career. While they are fun to play, and the concept of following one's sims to work was unique at this point, they have struggled to remain enjoyable. The detective career, in particular, was incredibly glitchy, which meant many players struggled to progress. While some of these bugs have been patched, others still remain in the game.

The pack also included the first occult , aliens, as well as the ability to run a retail store. Later attempts at occult sims have revealed flaws in the way aliens were implemented, which takes a little shine off them. Retail stores have improved over time, with extra things to make and sell, but they have also been superseded in many ways by the introduction of yard tables. The key difference is that the yard sale tables allow sims to sell their items easily without the hassle of owning a separate lot and store.

13 High School Years

Released in July of 2022, The Sims 4: High School Years does exactly what it says on the tin. It focuses heavily on fleshing out the teen Sim experience, allowing players to control their Sims while they're at high school in much the same way that the Get to Work and Get Famous do with adult Sims while they are at work. Given that those two rank among the very worst Sims 4 expansion packs, it should come as little surprise to learn that High School Years doesn't really provide players with too much to write home about either.

To its credit, Copperdale is far from a bad world, and some of the Build/Buy items included with the expansion do an excellent job of capturing the teen vibe. Likewise, some of the new Create-a-Sim options are also pretty decent, though aren't quite enough to fully justify the price of admission. That said, for hardcore fans of the series, younger players, or those interested in reliving their own high school vicariously through their Sim, it may be worth a look.

12 Get Famous

Many players had high hopes for Get Famous but it can be a polarizing pack. The world of Del Sol Valley is beautiful but is also very small and feels limiting. The game also introduced interactive acting and content creation careers as well as a fame system. The fame system is slightly erratic at times and can be annoying. While the interactive career is fun at first, it can quickly lose its shine as players repeat the same jobs over and over again.

There are also numerous high-end expensive items with this pack. While it's fun to build an opulent mansion, their use in most normal builds is limited. It does have some quirky features though, including the money vault, but for day-to-day gameplay, unless players are very much into the fame system, this pack is unlikely to see much use.

11 Get Together

The strongest features of Get Together are the club system and the beautiful world of Windenburg. The club system is one of the most versatile and underused systems in the game. It allows players to form groups of sims and set club goals. This means they can gather up to 8 sims in one place by calling a meeting. It's also possible to set the dress code and decide which activities and behavior will be encouraged or discouraged.

RELATED: Things Cut From The Sims 4 (That Were In The Original Game)

There are so many uses for clubs, including boosting social needs, building skills and even calling sims to a secret underground basement, where they will spend eternity painting masterpieces. Get Together is a great pack and often underrated but earns its place here due to the fact that many of its features are often not used for regular gameplay unless players utilize the clubs. Windenburg, however, remains one of the very best worlds in the game, as well as the largest.

10 Snowy Escape

The Snowy Escape expansion was released in late 2020 and is built around winter snowsports including snowboarding, skiing, and sledding. It also includes Mt. Komorebi, a Japanese mountain inspired by Mount. Fuji as well as several new types of wintery weather. For those wondering, players don't need to have Seasons installed to experience the latter.

As well as winter sports, the pack also provides players with the Salaryperson career as well as several other Japan-inspired elements including items, lot assignments, and music. For those who love the holiday season or simply enjoy learning more about Japanese culture, Snowy Escape is a solid pick.

9 Cats & Dogs

The Cats & Dogs expansion introduces four-legged fur friends into the game. Its biggest addition is the cats and dogs themselves, though players can also join the new interactive Veterinary career, which sees them run a veterinary clinic and live in Brindleton Bay; one of many players' favorite worlds.

The cats and dogs themselves are really quite adorable and have great customization options to boot; something that will no doubt be appealing to animal-loving players. While this is certainly a solid expansion though, anyone who doesn’t really want a pet may want to take give it a miss. The world is beautiful and the catalog items are versatile, but the furry friends are definitely the main attraction here.

8 Horse Ranch

Even though many fans had been hoping for a horse-related pack for a while before it was announced, it was actually one of the expansions that took the longest to be released. The Horse Ranch expansion only went live in the summer of 2023, nearly nine years after The Sims 4 base game.

This pack added horses, mini sheep, and mini goats to The Sims 4 . Unfortunately, the small animals are more of an extra, but the horses are quite complex creatures. The Horse Ranch Create-a-Sim menu is quite extensive, and it has nearly limitless customization options. There are a lot of gameplay features that players can explore; there are four horse skills, two human skills, and a whole bunch of ranch-related activities to indulge in. And, in a way, taking care of foals and horses in The Sims 4 feels much more in-depth compared to pets from the Cats & Dogs expansion pack.

7 City Living

The City Living expansion brought the additions of apartments, work-from-home careers, festivals, and the city of San Myshuno. Each of these can have a drastic effect on a player's gameplay. The apartment system allows players to pay rent to live in an apartment, paying upfront only for the furniture. This adds a new element to the game, especially for those who only use the lot traits to live in a fixer-upper home. It can also make a Sim's starter capital go much further.

City Living ’s work-from-home careers, Critic and Social Media Influencer, have also stayed relevant for longer than other careers. While all interactive careers can be repetitive, these offer a few nice perks and fit in well with life in the city. Even if players choose to venture away from the city, the food stalls, festivals, and community lots make it a great place to visit for a change of pace.

6 Cottage Living

The " Living " packs may not be to everybody's tastes, but they do provide players with plenty of bang for their buck when compared to some of the other expansions. 2021's Cottage Living is certainly no exception, bringing with it a new world that was inspired by the UK countryside as well as numerous animals, objects, and traits.

RELATED: The Sims 4: Insanely Beautiful Homes (& How Much They Cost)

Those looking for a quiet life with no alarms and no surprises will love what Henford-on-Bagley has to offer, as too will nature and animal lovers. Players can indulge all of their naturistic desires if they wish, while also getting to know some of the many new NPCs like Agatha and Agnes Crumplebottom and the Chopra family.

5 Discover University

Discover University is arguably one of the strongest packs we've seen in The Sims 4 . The pack is tailored toward the entire experience of University life and as such includes a huge amount of detail. Players can take out loans, live on or off campus, join clubs, and participate in college events. While classes aren't interactive, players do have a lot of control over their Sims' timetables and there are extra work-based activities to balance too.

The gameplay is expansive in this pack, with many new activities to engage in on campus. Build and Buy is limited but solid and the Create-a-Sim items are very versatile. Overall, the pack offers an amazing experience for anyone who loves student-life gameplay.

4 Growing Together

Despite releasing almost a full decade on from the base version of the game Growing Together remains a lot of fun and stays true to the core values of the series. It focuses on the enjoyment that can be derived from raising a Sim from childhood to old age, introducing plenty of great new Create a Sim and Build Mode items to help further enrich the experience. It also brings with it the bustling town of San Sequoia and the influential Robles family.

The expansion places much more of an emphasis on choices, with certain milestones and decisions helping to change a Sim's personality and shape who they really are as a person and how they react to events. The way that Sims interact with one another has also been completely revamped, with each Sim given preferences that can determine how socially compatible they are with those they meet.

As with other Sims games, Seasons is the game-defining expansion. While it doesn’t come with a new world, it does add so much to gameplay across the board that it deserves the top spot. Alongside seasons and weather, players also see the introduction of the in-game calendar, which allows them to schedule a wide range of events and celebrate seasonal holidays. The addition of holiday traditions, decorations, and other pop-up events rounds out this pack.

Adding Seasons is the biggest change across the game that players will ever see in The Sims 4 and adds a new depth to every home in every neighborhood. It also allows more realistic gameplay in terms of being able to add and plan regular events, including birthday parties. This is also the expansion which is the most general, adding new features that have a wide range of uses and implications.

2 Eco Lifestyle

Eco Lifestyle was an unexpected theme that had many players skeptical at first. However, as it's been explored simmers have discovered that it's far more versatile than expected. It offers several different ways to affect worlds, including eco footprints and action plans.

Eco footprints allow players to change the world into a green area full of beauty or plunge it into industrial smog. The pack also adds green energy, a new career, fabrication, candle-making skills, evolving community, and so much more. It was a surprise that was well-received, pulling numerous small features together into a well-rounded expansion.

1 Island Living

Island Living is another polarizing pack and offers an entirely new way of living on the island of Sulani. There are new part-time careers, new events, and a new vibe, which includes friendlier neighbors and some stunning views. There are also a lot of small additions in the pack, including swimming, diving, odd jobs, sailing, sunbathing, and sandcastle building.

The island itself evolves over time, linking with the new Conservationist career and allowing players to change their surroundings. Overall, the pack offers new ways to play and unique ways to build, something which is rare in The Sims 4 . For those who want a new way to play and a new cultural experience, the Island Living pack is, therefore, an excellent choice and arguably the best Sims 4 expansion.

The Sims 4 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Whether you're a Simmer yourself or buying a gift for one, we've got you covered. First of all, we've ranked all Sims 4 expansion packs from worst to best. We didn't include game packs, stuff packs, and kits because they generally contain less content, so it's better to judge them separately. Moreover, with our widgets, you can easily find cheap Sims 4 packs. If there are currently no discounts on your desired DLC, you can create a price alert, and you'll be instantly notified about the hottest deals.

This ranking was updated on December 19, 2023. We've added the recently released The Sims 4: For Rent.

What are the best Sims 4 expansion packs?

Here, you'll see how we've ranked Sims 4 Expansion Packs. Keep in mind that this ranking reflects our subjective opinions, and we welcome your input in the comments if you have differing views.

15. The Sims 4: Get to Work

Release Date: March 31, 2015

Get to Work introduces three active careers, enabling you to control your Sims during their working hours. You can now go to a police station, laboratory, or hospital and help your virtual person with their daily duties. If you fill up a progress bar, you get a promotion, bringing higher salary, new responsibilities, and rewards. For example, scientists may visit Sixam, the alien homeworld. Additionally, you can establish your own business to sell various items, including paintings, clothes, or baked goods.

Unfortunately, the DLC falls short in terms of depth. The tasks become repetitive rather quickly, and while the addition of the baking skill is a nice touch, it's not enough to push Get to Work higher in our list of Sims 4 expansion packs ranked in 2024.

14. The Sims 4: Get Famous

Release Date: November 16, 2018

Have your Sims ever penned a literary masterpiece or created a work of art worthy of Picasso, only to be met with crickets? Get Famous features a fame system that ensures you bask in the spotlight. As you rack up those fame points and climb to the top, you'll find townies clamoring for autographs and persistent paparazzi capturing your every move.

The expansion also allows you to pursue an active acting career, starting with commercials and sitcom roles and working your way up to starring in blockbuster movies. As the Simoleons roll in, you'll enjoy an expensive lifestyle complete with stylish evening wear, opulent mansions, high-end furnishings, marble floors, and an array of luxurious items. It might not be one of the best Sims 4 Expansion Packs, but it's a must for those who love role-playing wealthy families.

The Sims 4 Get Famous

13. The Sims 4: Island Living

Release Date: June 21, 2019

This is a classic expansion pack about exotic beach holidays we've seen in every previous game but with a twist. As you start exploring the newly added town Sulani, you'll instantly see the resemblance with the culture and sceneries of the Pacific Islands. The pack is inspired by it, from outfits and tattoos to the overwater bungalows and unique gameplay with island spirits and kava parties. It also introduces classical beach activities such as sunbathing, sand-castle building, swimming in the ocean, and water scooter rides.

However, it is a full-on town, meaning there are no hotels to book for a temporary escape like in previous The Sims games. For better or worse, you can either visit Sulani as a regular town or buy your sims a house near the sea to live here all year round. To make life even more paradise-like, you can take up a new semi-active career as a conservationist and positively impact the island's environment. It's great, but this idea was taken further in another expansion, which you'll see later. Overall, it's suitable for those who enjoy the idea of owning a house near the ocean and love the island aesthetic.

The Sims 4: Island Living

12. The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle

Release Date: June 5, 2020

Kudos to Maxis for a completely new idea and for bringing to light a very real-world problem. Admittedly, Eco Lifestyle is one of the most innovative Sims 4 expansion packs. There's so much new content that you can't get your head around it at first. But with time, you will start digging the eco-footprint and its impact on all towns, not just the new Evergreen Harbor. You can turn the neighborhood into a neat green paradise or a smogged industrial dump. The outcome will depend on which objects you'll buy for your sims, as certain items affect the eco-footprint.

The recycling and Neighbourhood Action Plans are other exciting novelties, but for a limited circle of players. It is hard to see every second Simmer wanting their sims to dive into a dumpster or making countless social interactions to have enough points to cast a NAP vote. Nonetheless, great for those who are interested in this topic and playing low-income families with off-the-grid lot features.

11. The Sims 4: High School Years

Release Date: July 28, 2022

Do you feel that teenagers are no different from adults in The Sims 4? If so, this expansion pack is right up your alley. Immerse in high school reality and lead youngsters to adulthood. Attend the prom, participate in after-school activities or cause trouble. Whatever you choose, your sims will make unforgettable memories.

The pack introduces a new world of Copperdale with high school, which is an active lot for the first time in the series. No more "rabbit holes" or disappearing besides the screen. You can control every aspect of your sim school life, from attending classes to pulling pranks on friends. Moreover, there are new aspirations exclusive to teens, completion of which provides rewards, for instance, a boost in their future careers. Speaking of work, sims might pursue one of two new part-time jobs, game streamer or influencer. Overall, High School Years add-on is definitely for those who consider themselves family Simmers and love legacy challenges, as teenagers are finally more than younger clones of adults. Teenage sims can enjoy fully-fledged adolescence, from characteristic activities and events to more contemporary furniture and clothes.

10. The Sims 4: Snowy Escape

Release Date: November 13, 2020

Visit the beautiful Japanese-inspired world with traditional buildings and peaking mountaintops, and let your sims experience life to the fullest. Snowy Escape introduces Mt. Komorebi, where you can indulge in many activities such as skiing, snowboarding, or even climbing the rocks. After romping around in the snow, recover in the hot springs or take a hike through a bamboo forest.

Besides the new world, the pack also contains build/buy items influenced by Japanese culture. Use kotatsu tables, tatami mats, and shoji screens to design the perfect sanctuary for your sims. However, the most noteworthy feature is the lifestyle mechanic. It allows your sims to acquire special traits through gameplay. For instance, they can turn into "Coffee Fanatics" due to regular coffee consumption. Consequently, they will gain various benefits after drinking their favorite beverage. Moreover, lifestyles have to be maintained. Otherwise, they will be replaced by another or disappear. It makes sims' personalities more complex, which is always appreciated. All in all, while it may not be one of the essential Sims 4 expansion packs, it will help to break your virtual family's routine.

The Sims 4 Snowy Escape Expansion Pack

9. The Sims 4: Get Together

Release Date: December 8, 2015

This is one of the most underrated add-ons, a hidden gem among Sims 4 expansion packs. People rarely remember Get Together when talking about "good stuff," while it offers an insane amount of reusable gameplay, CAS, and build/buy content. You will repeatedly want to return to the charming European-styled Windenburg, which provides 27 lots to play around with. Some of these lots include nightclubs with proper DJ booths, which are perfect for dance parties, and coffee shops with espresso bars. If you own Get to Work, in addition to that, your sim can live their dream of owning their indie Starbucks competitor.

The key feature of this pack is interest clubs. You can suck up to the members of the pre-made clubs, hoping they'll agree to take you. Or you can create one of your own, especially when the vast club creation allows you to pick anything: meetings location, rules, the background of its members. By spending club points, you can add powerful moodlets to create a perfect environment for your particular gameplay needs. Even Grilled Cheese Appreciation Club, exclusively for rich people, can become a reality. The Sims 4: Get Together is perfect for players who love interacting with NPCs or crave universal CAS content.

8. The Sims 4: Horse Ranch

Release Date: July 20, 2023

Continuing our list of the best Sims 4 expansion packs, we have Horse Ranch . Simmers have been longing for horses for a while. These majestic creatures were missing from Cats & Dogs in 2017 and from Cottage Living in 2021. It's surprising that it took the developers almost a decade after the release of the base game to introduce them.

However, it was well worth the wait, as the horses look impressive with their beautifully rendered animations. In addition, the DLC features the picturesque Chestnut Ridge, with meticulously designed lots that outshine any other neighborhood. If your Sims ever get tired of riding or exploring, they can also enjoy tending to miniature sheep and goats. It's certainly a no-brainer for equestrian enthusiasts.

The Sims 4 Horse Ranch Expansion Pack

7. The Sims 4: City Living

Release Date: October 1, 2016

The Sims 4: City Living is not just about the skyscrapers with lifts and apartments. It's about the multicultural megapolis San Myshuno, inspired by San Francisco, New York, and dipped into love for Japanese, Indian, and Morrocan cultures. And this love is shown in new colorful outfits, which will diversify the looks of your sims. What else can San Myshuno offer? The festivals you'll be invited to from time to time, the most noteworthy of which is Flea Market, where you can buy cheap furniture that isn't available in build/buy mode.

But, if you are interested primarily in apartments, you most certainly can rent one. The cheaper the apartment is, the more adverse lot traces it'll have. Not to mention noisy neighbors that will keep your sims awake at night. Sounds like a drag? You can get a penthouse, similar to a regular house, only on the top of a skyscraper, meaning a beautiful view from the window. This kind of residential lot costs a lot, but luckily, you get three new professions to earn that money, and each has an option of working from home. You can now earn simoleons as a politician, critic, or social media specialist. This expansion pack is excellent for someone looking for a new, realistic setting.

The Sims 4 City Living

6. The Sims 4: Cottage Living

Release Date: July 22, 2021

Simmers have long wished for an expansion pack centered on country life, and the dreams finally came true in The Sims 4. Cottage Living takes your sims to Henford-on-Bagley, a lively village full of interesting folks, where they can raise farming animals, befriend bunnies, and participate at the local fair.

In this pack, cooking and gardening are more meaningful, as a new lot challenge, "Simple Living," requires having all the ingredients to make a meal. However, your sims can obtain necessary products in a few different ways,  for example, by cultivating crops, foraging in the wild, and visiting the local market. Such small changes are important because the game tends to be too easy. It's good to see developers going in this direction. And, of course, if you don't like the feature, you're not forced to use it.

Furthermore, your sims can run errands for residents of Henford-on-Bagley in exchange for various rewards and the latest rumors. Learning about the community undoubtedly adds to the village's charm. This is one of the best Sims 4 Expansion Packs for those who are fond of living off the grid and the idyllic atmosphere of the countryside.

5. The Sims 4: For Rent

Release Date: December 7, 2023

For those who found the City Living apartment system a bit lacking, For Rent is a compelling alternative. This expansion lets you build your own multi-family housing, step into the role of a property owner, and rake in simoleons from your tenants. The potential for drama is abundant, with easy eavesdropping and snooping on neighbors and the option to even blackmail them for a bribe if you fancy causing some trouble.

The DLC introduces a new world, Tomarangu, inspired by Southeast Asian culture. Here, Sims can partake in fresh activities like visiting an animal sanctuary or leaving offerings at the Spirit House. Alongside these additions, there's a plethora of new clothing, furniture, and more. Undoubtedly, this DLC injects a dose of realism into the game, capturing the essence of starting life by renting a modest apartment rather than living in a lavish mansion.

The Sims 4 For Rent Expansion Pack

4. The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs

Release Date: November 10, 2017

There are some things that you can't imagine The Sims franchise without, such as swimming pools, occasional fires, burglars... And pets! Whether you want to get a specific dog or cat breed or to recreate your real-life pet with its unique features, this expansion pack gives a vast set of customization tools, including the color wheel. If you want, you can create The Joker cat - the pet's CAS is that detailed. Of course, your pets will also have unique personality traits, for example, Glutton, which makes them messier when eating. Unfortunately, you won't be able to control them without downloading mods.

Does your love for four-legged friends have no limits? Master a veterinarian's skill and open your own vet clinic to help pets all over the town. Veterinarians can give different kinds of treatments, from medicines to surgeries. Cats & Dogs also offers Brindleton Bay, which looks like a picturesque New England seafront town, plus a set of relaxed, comfy-looking outfits and countryside furniture. All things considered, it's simply one of the crucial The Sims 4 expansion packs.

The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs

3. The Sims 4: Growing Together

Release Date: March 16, 2023

Growing Together is a must-buy for Simmers, who enjoy family-oriented gameplay. But it's safe to say that anyone who loves drama in their Sims' lives will dig it, too. Now their relationships feel even more dynamic and realistic with the new Social Compatibility feature, which lets Sims have preferences and enjoy spending time with certain people more than others.

From infancy to old age, you can track your Sims' progress through the years with Milestones. Children can gain confidence now that will affect them for the rest of their lives, and adults can have a mid-life crisis and turn their lives upside down. All in all, this is one of the essential add-ons because it enhances all life stages.

The Sims 4 Growing Together Expansion Pack

2. The Sims 4: Discover University

Release Date: November 15, 2019

With Discover University , sims can finally strive to get higher education. And there's a wide range of degrees to pick from. Psychology, law, and villainy, to name a few. Whichever path you choose, it'll be time-consuming and demanding, just like in real life. And challenges are welcomed in The Sims 4. Especially since this expansion pack offers different "difficulty levels."

Your sims can be uni students in the comfort of their homes, move into a new place with roommates, or go hardcore on campus. You can settle for a Normal Degree, pick up easy As subjects a chill for most of the time, or go hardcore by trying to get a Distinguished Degree, manage the max number of modules, and take a part-time job. You create the whole experience! In addition, you'll find lots of mass-market-looking outfits and Ikea-like furniture, adding more realism to the game with simple, modern looks.

The Sims 4 Discover University

1. The Sims 4: Seasons

Release Date: June 22, 2018

Long-story short: buy The Sims 4: Seasons now, unless you hate seasons and prefer eternal summer; the end. The introduction of seasons is a game-changing feature that transforms a perfectly bland setting into a dynamic environment. Even the climate is a thing now in The Sims 4, as different worlds have their own weather patterns, so winter in Willow Creek looks and feels different from winter in Oasis Springs. The influence of the weather and temperature is not merely esthetical but impacts mood and can even kill your beloved sims. So dress them accordingly.

But it doesn't stop there. The pack introduces holidays with their traditions, the practice of which grants powerful mood boosts, happiness points, and day-offs! You can keep track of holidays and create your own ones (Grilled Cheese Appreciation Day, too) on the calendar, which is yet another new and handy feature for coordinating daily routines, especially for lots with many characters. Add to that more gameplay objects to interact with, and separate outfit categories for hot and cold temperatures, and you'll get one of the best expansion packs for Sims 4!

The Sims 4 Seasons

The Sims 5 release date, monetization, and multiplayer: what do we know about the new installment?

For some time now, there's been a buzz surrounding Project Rene, which serves as a working title for the next major installment in the beloved series from Electronic Arts. As more details are gradually unveiled through creator summits and community updates, we've gathered them here to share with you.

Let's address the burning question: what is The Sims 5 release date? There's yet to be an official confirmation, but Grant Rodiek, Game Director, suggested it's still a long way off. Previous entries followed a 5-year gap between releases, and in the case of the current installment, that has long since passed. Given the early development stage, late 2024 seems like the earliest we can hope for, with 2025 being a more realistic estimate for The Sims 5 release date.

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Interestingly, Lyndsay Pearson, Maxis Vice President of Franchise Creative, confirmed that the upcoming installment would be free to download upon launch. However, we can also expect regular updates to the base game, with additional content provided in The Sims 5 Expansion Packs for purchase. There's a chance that some basic forms of weather would be introduced for free, while DLC may focus on specific aspects, for example, winter sports.

Moreover, Rodiek revealed that Project Rene would incorporate multiplayer elements, enabling players to invite friends to join them in the game. However, the full extent of this feature remains unspecified.

Will the best The Sims 4 Expansions be compatible with The Sims 5?

The looming question is, will the best Sims 4 Expansion Packs be compatible with the upcoming installment? There's no official word on this matter, but considering the series' history, it's a fair bet that they won't be transferrable. You'll likely need to invest in new The Sims 5 Expansion Packs to enjoy additional content. Fortunately, the developers have assured players that both games will coexist, so you won't be bidding farewell to DLC, purchased for the fourth entry.

Best Sims 4 Expansion Packs, Ranked

Image of Madison Benson

The Sims 4’s base game has captivating features, but the real excitement comes from the expansion packs. Here’s the best Sims 4 Expansion Packs ranked.

Best Sims 4 Expansion Packs Ranked

Before jumping into the main event, it’s important to note that this list does not include Game Packs, kits, or Stuff Packs . Instead, we’re focusing entirely on expansions today but will briefly touch upon how different ones influence each other. However, as more expansions are released throughout the year, we’ll include those in the rankings as we dive into their mechanics and new features.

Without further ado, let’s get into the rankings of the best Sims 4 expansion packs!

15. Island Living

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Starting this list is Island Living , an expansion that adds an island. That’s about all there is for noteworthy features. While things get interesting once you couple in expansions like Seasons and Eco Lifestyle, there is little exploration by itself. I was initially the most excited about this one before diving in-game and realizing the island offers little additional content.

On the plus side, the island is beautiful, and the new careers are interesting to explore. You can also create Mermaid occult sims , introducing a new level of shenanigans. Oh, and we can’t forget swimming with dolphins. Outside of these, though, there are better packs out there.

I’ve tried a playthrough with Mermaid Sims, and it is pretty fun. Despite this, it didn’t feel much different from regular characters; the most exciting part was the Create-A-Sim customization options .

You can purchase the Island Living expansion here .

14. Get to Work

sims 4 travel expansion pack

The Get to Work pack has so much potential. You can run your own retail store and get involved in your career instead of having your character go MIA for eight hours. In particular, I really enjoyed my time at the hospital when trying to figure out what illnesses the NPCs have and dealing with them. The problem? The bugs.

Trying to navigate these bugs, especially at the hospital and crime scenes , is a nightmare sometimes, making a potential top-five pick fall to 13. All things considered, if these get patched one day, this very well may climb the ladder once more. New updates for The Sims 4 are released all the time, with many adding small bug fixes for these older expansions, so I’m optimistic.

You can purchase the Get to Work expansion here .

13. Discover University

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Discover University has aspects that are both very exciting and slightly monotonous. Other packs, like City Living, Get Together, and High School Years, all have individual aspects from Discover University that are vastly improved, making this one good but nothing to write home about. My favorite part is living in a dorm room and interacting with my roommates, but aside from that, this one is outdated, and the newer High School Years is an improved version.

Gaining a university degree to boost your career performance is incredibly satisfying, especially with the quick semesters. If you want a massive headstart with a new job , university is the way to go.

You can purchase the Discover University expansion pack here .

12. Snowy Escape

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Snowy Escape reminds me a lot of Island Living. You gain access to a new, snowy world to visit or live in, and you can partake in various winter-themed activities. Outside of this, though, there still isn’t much going on. This pack is still a major improvement over Island Living because of its considerable amount of Build Mode additions and extras like hot springs, adding an interesting Japanese-inspired twist to this pack.

Overall, the new items in this pack are beautiful, and it’s great to see a seasonal pack that doesn’t require the Seasons expansion . However, a lot is still missing. Sure, you can go skiing and snowboarding, but like most skills, they sometimes feel monotonous. Rock climbing is the most entertaining of the three, but that’s not saying much. It’s a good pack, but it could be better.

You can purchase the Snowy Escape expansion pack here .

11. Get Famous

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Of all the current expansion packs, Get Famous is the one I’ve spent the most time exploring. As the name goes, the purpose of this expansion is for your Sims to become famous! While one of the easier ways is by becoming an actor or actress and progressing through this career path, you can also live a life of fame through skills like writing and cooking, among others. Perhaps the most interesting part, though, is the fame perk system and the changes it makes to your Sims’ lives.

While my singing these praises sounds like this should be within the top three, a significant factor drops this to the number eight: the lots. Starlight Boulevard is interesting, but aside from this, you’re very limited on what houses you can live in. Some NPC interactions with celebrities also get frustrating, with them often getting distracted whenever one is in the same area. Still a great pack that I’ve spent a considerable amount of time playing around with, but it is not the best.

You can purchase the Get Famous expansion pack here .

10. City Living

sims 4 travel expansion pack

City Living has two defining features that make it a fun pack: apartment buildings and festivals. While there are a lot of limits to how you can customize apartments and penthouses, they offer a unique way for your Sim to live that is reminiscent and arguably better than Discover University’s dorm system. Festivals are also a blast, ranging from food to romance-oriented, and add some much-needed spice to the game. The downside? That’s about all it adds.

While the pack does boast other features, like critic and politician career tracks, the two described above are the main highlights. It’s also worth noting that while San Myshuno looks like a big city with a lot going on, you’re still limited to very few lots to use. It is a decent pack, but not for everyone. If you enjoy singing, that may help persuade you to check this one out.

You can purchase the City Living expansion pack here .

9. High School Years

sims 4 travel expansion pack

It’s Discover University, but it improved in nearly every way. As a newer pack, High School Years makes sense despite not making it to the top slot on this list. One of the changes I appreciate is being able to physically attend your classes without sitting there waiting for the few-hour timer to end. You can actually observe what’s going on, much like in Get to Work. You can also attend prom, decorate your locker, and post on social media, among other things. There is also an amusement park lot that you can visit in your free time, which may very well be the pack’s highlight. A surprising amount of content here makes the experience entertaining, but the actual environment sometimes feels empty.

As you walk around the school halls and attend class, one of the most noticeable details is that classrooms are rarely full . There are plenty of teenagers around, yet the school often feels empty. I wouldn’t expect hundreds of students, mainly due to performance issues, but adding a few more goes a long way in having things feel more lively. Far from perfect, but a considerable improvement from Discover University, landing it right in the middle of this best Sims 4 Expansion Packs list.

8. Eco Lifestyle

sims 4 travel expansion pack

Eco Lifestyle is, all around, an exciting and pleasant expansion pack to use. The eco-footprint addition helps show just how excellent (or poor) an area’s environmental standards are, and the new world it adds has a mix of smog-ridden industrial regions and green residential lots. However, it does pose some issues, such as how easy it is to create a green environment and how few consequences there are to having Industrial eco stats.

What makes this pack so interesting, though, is the sheer variety of content it adds. Sure, it all centers around the same theme, but it has multiple ways to accomplish this. Features like insect farms, biofuel, fabrication, and the Neighborhood Action Plan are all viable ways to get into the spirit of creating a greener world, which helps add a lot of variety. It also forces you to be attentive to household appliances, especially if you fill your house with electronics and other high-power items. Overall, it adds enough challenge and excitement to land in the top five of this list!

I recently played as a household living entirely off the grid in a Henford-on-Bagley (Cottage Living) home. This was one of my most interesting experiences in the game, and I almost ranked this expansion higher. The main reason I didn’t want to is that the ones I’ve included below also significantly impacted how enjoyable the playthrough was, and they continue to impress me to this day.

7. Horse Ranch

sims 4 travel expansion pack

On the surface, Horse Ranch is an interesting expansion that adds, well, horses. If you love horses, this pack is perfect for you. It adds some interesting Build/Buy mode items and has great cross-pack compatibility. You can even ride your horses anywhere, including outside of Chestnut Ridge!

With that said, Horse Ranch primarily fills in the gaps left by Cottage Living, adding items reminiscent of the latter. These two pair perfectly, but if I had to choose between them, Cottage Living’s complexity outshines Horse Ranch in several areas, particularly when comparing their worlds. Nonetheless, if you love horses or want a pack that compliments Cottage Living, this one is definitely worth picking up.

6. Cottage Living

sims 4 travel expansion pack

If you’re an animal lover , Cottage Living may very well be near the top of your list. While sure, it doesn’t feature every animal out there; it has chickens, cows, and llamas! It adds even more than Horse Ranch does. If you venture out into the wild, you can also spot foxes, rabbits, and birds you can interact with worldwide.

The countryside aesthetic is attractive, with great themed outfits to boot. There is also a competition to motivate us to care for the little guys. It’s a blast, and it’s the first pack with which I have very few problems. It isn’t very influential outside of Henford-on-Bagley compared to the three I’m discussing.

5. Cats and Dogs

sims 4 travel expansion pack

As a disclaimer, this pack isn’t for you if you’re not a fan of cats or dogs. For those who are, though, rejoice! The Cats and Dogs expansion pack in The Sims 4 provides a surprisingly comprehensive customization and caretaking system for creating and caring for your pets. You can interact with your pet through petting, hugs, praising, and other regular actions, as well as fulfilling their basic needs of eating, feeding, cleaning, and more. The pack has nearly everything you’d need and want if you want pets, but one aspect may cause problems. There is no mood interface for your pets.

In a way, this adds an exciting challenge in knowing that, much like the real world, you can’t perfectly guess just how hungry, thirsty, or bored your pet is. However, you also can’t see any traits or quirks your pets may have, resulting in some odd situations where your pets will randomly perform actions , forcing you to guess why. A similar but simplified version of the regular Sim UI would help this problem immensely.

Outside of that, though, it’s an incredible and adorable pack for those who want a cat, dog, fox, or raccoon in their game. If you don’t, you’re welcome to skip this one.

3. Get Together

sims 4 travel expansion pack

You’d think that the second Sims 4 expansion pack ever released would be far lower quality than the rest, but honestly, it’s really good. Clubs in Get Together offer an exciting way to meet new sims and participate in activities together, and you can watch group dances as your Sim takes on the role of a DJ. Seeing people dancing in nightclubs is one of the best things to watch while eating some food or, well, doing anything.

One of the best parts of this pack that differs from others on this list is the number of lots you can visit. There are multiple cafes, nightclubs, bars, and other community lots alongside various residential ones. This shouldn’t be as exciting as it is, but considering some of the new worlds have 10-12 new lots, and this one has 27 lots , it’s certainly worth celebrating.

This is only topped by three other packs simply because they somehow influence nearly every aspect of the game.

You can purchase the Get Together expansion pack here .

3. For Rent

sims 4 travel expansion pack

The Sims 4: For Rent is the fifteenth expansion released for the game, and it gets a lot right with its property management features. Building upon City Living’s apartments, For Rent allows you to create your own multi-household lot by dividing buildings into units, with one lot allowing up to six units.

In other words, you can have dozens of characters living in a massive apartment complex if your console or PC is beefy enough to handle any performance drops.

Since property management is For Rent’s main selling point, it’s no surprise that this is its defining feature, highlighting a surprisingly complex unit configuration and tenant management system. However, even its CAS additions and the world of Tomarang are worth mentioning, as these all fit a classy and stylish Southeast Asian-inspired theme.

Unfortunately, the world of Tomarang is one of the smallest you’ll find in these packs, with only two neighborhoods and nine lots available to explore. While there are other buildings to find outside of these, particularly the Night Market and various temples, it feels small compared to those in Get Together, Cats and Dogs, or the base game.

sims 4 travel expansion pack

I’ll be honest; Seasons surprised me a lot. Ever since I first laid my eyes upon this pack, I thought it was unnecessary and would be one of the worst on the Sims 4 market. Boy, was I wrong, though, and I’ll say it loud and clear: The Sims 4 Seasons is one of the best expansion packs out there. In other words, don’t judge a book by its cover. Its impact on the game is so important that the “Select a Season to Play in” page is the first thing to appear once you create a new game.

It is shocking how many exciting features are in this pack, ranging from the weather to the gardening career. My favorite, though, is the addition of holidays. Not only are there default annual holidays, but you can create your own ! That’s just asking for fun and wild shenanigans!

Seasons also introduces some minor but underrated additions, such as children being able to become scouts and make holiday crafts . Considering children have minimal gameplay mechanics currently, anything that adds variety here is always a plus. The gardening career is also surprisingly in-depth compared to others in the game and adds to an already helpful skill. While many of the previous packs vary in impressiveness depending on personal preference, Seasons is one that just about anyone can enjoy.

1. Growing Together

sims 4 travel expansion pack

For a long time, Seasons was the most beloved expansion pack for many people, including myself. Since I began playing The Sims 4 with expansions, it has always been the greatest in my mind.

That is until Growing Together was released in March 2023.

When I thought of things The Sims 4 lacked previously, I thought about social dynamics, particularly with children. I never enjoyed having babies or children in my household since they felt dull and made me want to age them up to teenagers instantly. Growing Together changes this by completely revamping social systems , adding compatibility, child confidence and family dynamics. Children also get four new aspirations, making this life stage more interesting.

One of the best features of this expansion is Sims’ milestones and challenges like midlife crises, layoffs and burnout. These are all real obstacles we experience, and trying to overcome them adds depth to the game. Fortunately, it also comes with heartwarming and exciting parts of someone’s life, like self-discovery and family reunions.

Growing Together proved that expansions aren’t always about adding new locations, characters and skills; instead, you’re almost getting a completely different game in some cases. I remember taking a small hiatus from playing The Sims 4, only to return after hearing just how much potential this pack had. Now that I’ve played it firsthand, I can confirm that it’s everything I wished it would be, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

You can purchase the Growing Together expansion pack here .

What Sims 4 Expansion Pack Should I Buy First?

All players should buy The Sims 4: Seasons as their first expansion pack . Seasons comes with the most important gameplay changes. For example, the new weather features just feel like they should have been in the game all along. Being able to see your game change when it’s raining or seeing it go through fall and winter just makes it all the more realistic and exciting. So, start with Seasons, and then go for the other expansion packs like Growing Together.

The Sims 4 is available on PC, Mac, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. To learn more about the game, check out how to create units in The Sims 4: For Rent , or click the tag below to explore our growing article catalog!

The Sims: For Rent Allows Millennials to Turn the Tables

We can’t afford our dream homes—but now we can yell at tenants..

When The Sims debuted in February 2000, the average house price in the U.S. was just over $200,000. I was 8 years old, and I would spend hours at my best friend’s house, taking turns on her PC to design our dream homes.

The Sims felt like a trial run for adulthood, exploring how you’d make use of your future autonomy. Much of this validated the importance of personal space: how to lay out a room, how to choose a sofa that balanced aesthetics and comfort, how to make a house a home.

My friend and I made liberal use of the cheat code granting limitless funds. Rosebud , we’d type whenever the coffers were running low. Rosebudrosebudrosebud. Or else, when we were really strapped: motherlode .

Today the average price of a home is nearly $490,000. The ratio of home price to median household income has jumped from 4.33 to 7.57 (as of November). Everything is more expensive , and wages have failed to keep pace. Roughly half of millennials in the U.S. are still renting , a far larger share than in past generations. Forget cheat codes and vibromatic heart beds , the likes of which I splurged on for my Sims. Adulthood, for me and many people my age, has been defined by moving from rental to rental. My childhood dream of designing a dwelling that reflects me from top to toe has instead, for years, been squeezed into shared living spaces and whittled down by prescriptive leases. I’ve not even been able to hang things on the wall without my landlord’s permission.

When I learned that The Sims had recently released a For Rent expansion pack enabling people to play as tenants or property managers, I felt the kind of commingled hurt, umbrage, and morbid curiosity that you might experience when confronted by a cynical remake of your favorite childhood film.

The official trailer for The Sims 4: For Rent emphasizes the potential of “multiunit life,” promising “ample opportunity … [for] eavesdropping, snooping, or even breaking and entering”—a description that instantly evoked memories of my worst roommates.

Its view of landlords, on the other hand, is benevolent, exhorting players to “be more than a property owner—be a community builder” (with the reassurance that, should your community be late with rent payments, “you can even take their stuff!”).

The original Sims seeded a fantasy of independent adulthood across an entire generation. Why would millennials, unable to own their own places, sully the site of our nostalgia by playing as landlords? Was turning the tables, if only in our imaginations, meant to be somehow cathartic?

EA declined to put forward a game designer for interview but did extend to me For Rent for review—and so, for the first time since I was a child, I returned to the simulated world that had made me so anticipate adulthood.

Inevitably, a lot has changed. The peaceful suburb I remembered from childhood has been replaced by elaborate “worlds” that I can (effortfully, via a loading screen) switch between to grow my property portfolios. The Sims 4 is more immersive and finely drawn, visually, than the original was, but it’s also more involved: It took me a whole afternoon to create my first Sim and set her up in her “hovel.”

It was also not as straightforwardly godlike an act of creation. I might have named Edith Sim and instilled her with ambition, mischief, and a sassy pixie cut, but she selected her job—aspiring comedian—all on her own.

Edith and I both live alone; we both like cooking and working out; we are both mean. Our days even passed the same way. Edith went to work (well, open mic nights), paid bills, scrolled social media, did dishes, and showered. This might have been an exciting vision of independence when I was a child, but now I had my own household to attend to. After getting on top of Edith’s chores, I would close my laptop, dazed, and make a start on my own, picturing a diamond above my head turning from orange to green as I cleaned my kitchen and took out the trash.

Despite her middling success on the stand-up circuit, Edith not only owned her place but rented out another, an abode that might euphemistically have been listed as “minimalist.” For this, Edith received 1 Simoleon a week, from a young adult named Jazz McFierce.

This transaction is the selling point of The Sims 4: For Rent . Edith, on my command, could go to Jazz’s unit, make small talk, perform maintenance and repairs. Or she could go through his mail, eavesdrop at his door, and issue fines for violating the lease.

On her first visit to Jazz, Edith was prompted to “ask about rental conditions.” After she did so, Jazz immediately became angry. When Edith, now tense, tried to backpedal by telling Jazz a funny story and complimenting his appearance, he walked out.

As a lifelong renter, I noticed that my sympathies initially lay with Jazz. But within the game, Edith was my stand-in. What I found most unsettling was how quickly I assumed the mindset of a landlord, despite my politics and my personal experience.

When Jazz reported a faulty oven late on a Tuesday night, I ensured that Edith was quick to respond, strengthening their relationship and sending my unit’s rating up. She made regular, time-consuming trips to carry out maintenance and tried to engender positive relations with Jazz. She even refused the temptation to snoop.

But soon my frustration (as Edith) with Jazz’s requests started to outweigh my commitment to being the Only Good Landlord. Every notification from the rental instantly provoked my impatience. Not the damn tenant again! The slow, clunky transition within the game between Edith’s home and the rental only added to my frustration and my creeping sense of Jazz as a burden. Why did this guy need so much of Edith’s energy?

This property-baron brain—an inclination I’d always deplored and pathologized in my own landlords—was unfamiliar to me, and unnerving. On the Sims subreddit, I found more evidence of it taking root. One user complained about their tenants allowing the unit to overflow with trash and continually protesting the conditions. “My rental is five-star. Everything is perfect, even the maintenance. … Get your filthy ass up and throw out your trash!” they fumed.

Others reported having squatters or never receiving rent. “My tenant is just an expense at [this] point,” wrote one . Merely asking tenants about the unit’s condition could prompt its rating to be downgraded.

Some of these issues reflected bugs, expected of just-released expansion packs (and many of them have now been fixed ). But the fraught, even fundamentally oppositional relationship between landlords and tenants seemed very much a feature of For Rent . When I switched perspectives and played as Edith’s tenant Jazz, he seemed continually tense, anxiously waiting for her to call or stop by.

This dynamic is at least “very lifelike,” the review website VideoGamer observed . But that does not make for an entertaining or even engaging game. The most fun to be had, the article concluded, was “by being the worst landlord possible … making near-criminally awful units to sell back to tenants at a much higher cost.”

The review articulated my unease about For Rent and what it represented. Where The Sims ’ early expansion packs sought to enlarge its world in delightful or desirable ways—with pets, magic, showbiz careers, and sexy furniture— For Rent operates within the worst confines of the real one, not only normalizing the broken approach to housing but incentivizing (indirectly or otherwise) its most dismal expression.

That wasn’t the developers’ intent. “It was really important for the team to make sure we are treating the ongoing anxiety about the cost of living and property ownership with the respect that it deserves,” said designer Jessica Croft in a December interview, adding that they aimed for For Rent to have “an optimistic lens.”

After all, The Sims was the first “life simulator” game to focus on relatable and attainable goals: not designing a city or running a zoo, but laying the groundwork for a happy, rewarding life.

Creator Will Wright originally had the idea after he lost his home to fire in 1991, focusing his mind on how to rebuild. Drawing from diverse sources such as the psychologist Abraham Maslow’s “hierarchy of needs” and the revolutionary “human-centered” architecture of Christopher Alexander, he sought to design a game that—as he put it in a 2003 interview —laid bare everyday ethics.

With For Rent , The Sims has perhaps moved too far toward reflecting brutal reality, forcing players to choose between being on one side or the other of an often fractious and all-too-familiar power imbalance. As a child, I was drawn to The Sims as a role-play for adulthood, a world of expansive promise and possibility; playing For Rent , I was reminded, depressingly, of how the game is rigged.

I did, recently, finally, manage to buy an apartment of my own—after saving for years and leaving the large, expensive city where I’d spent my late 20s. It’s modest compared with the residences of all my Sims, and every bill and breakage leaves me wishing I could just type rosebud and make it go away—but that’s life. I’ll take walls I can drill into over a heart-shaped vibrating bed.

The Sims 4: Horse Ranch - How to Get a Foal

J ust as its name indicates, horses are the main focus of The Sims 4 Horse Ranch expansion pack. This is the right pack for horse lovers, as it's got it all. From competitive breeding to nurturing rescued horses, players can explore all sorts of in-depth horse content.

RELATED: The Sims 4: Horse Ranch Build/Buy Guide

Whether gamers want to get a horse with the best possible traits or they want to welcome a brand-new member to their household, it's important to know how to acquire a foal in The Sims 4 Horse Ranch, and this guide will explain how to do just that. Here, players will learn all four methods for acquiring a foal in The Sims 4 .

Create-a-Sim

Just like cats and dogs, horses are household members in The Sims 4 , and this means that they can be created in Create-a-Sim as long as the player owns Horse Ranch.

When gamers are creating a horse in CAS, they can decide its life stage, so they can start their household with a foal from the get-go .

If the player isn't starting a save from scratch, they won't be able to simply add another Sim to their household without resorting to cheats. To do it, they must enable cheats in The Sims 4 and then activate the CAS.fulleditmode cheat. This makes it possible for gamers to add new members at any given time.

Purchasing a Foal

Players can buy foals with The Sims 4 Horse Ranch expansion pack . To purchase a foal, gamers must call Ranch Animal Exchange ; this can be done at a Ranch Bulletin Board, on the Household app on a Sim's phone, or by interacting with a Hay Now! Horse Bed.

To buy a foal, a Sim must have saved up a total of 1,000 Simoleons in order to be able to pay the agency fee. Purchased horses usually have pretty good traits compared to rescued horses.

Rescuing a Foal

Instead of buying a foal, players can actually rescue one in need. Gamers can rescue foals by calling Ranch Animal Exchange on a phone, by reading a Ranch Bulletin Board, or by interacting with any Hay Now! Horse Bed.

Since these horses have been rescued, they tend to be more fragile and have more complicated traits as a consequence, but that doesn't mean they won't be great horses to have on a ranch. To rescue a foal, gamers only need to pay a rescue fee of 250 Simoleons .

Horse Breeding

Just like cats and dogs, horses can breed in The Sims 4 . If they're successful, they will eventually become pregnant and give birth to a foal within a couple of days.

Players must own a mare (an adult female horse) if they'd like to add a foal to their household. The mare can mate with a stallion (an adult male horse) as long as it's nearby and they've met each other before - the horse doesn't actually have to be in the same household for it to work.

If these conditions are met, the Sim must interact with one of the horses and select the " Encourage to Mate with... " option in the Friendly social menu. It might not work the first time, but once it does, the option will no longer be available, confirming that the mare is expecting.

The Sims 4 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
