Weather and best time to visit.

Uttarakhand is a destination to be visited all through the year as each season has something special to offer. The best time to explore the destination is during the summer season as climate conditions remain comfortable. Its summers (March-June) are pleasant and a great time to soak in the scenic beauty and embark on adventures. Tourists can also plan to travel to the place during winters, although, certain areas become inaccessible during this time due to heavy snowfall. So, if you enjoy the cold, this is a beautiful time to visit the state. From July to September the state of Uttarakhand experiences monsoon. This time of year is not considered as the idyllic season as compared to other two seasons. The reason for this is that the place witnesses heavy rainfall in these months. But, Monsoon in Uttarakhand is refreshing. One can enjoy to the fullest, the lush greenery and the natural beauty of destinations like Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Lansdowne, Mukteshwar and Pangot will makes you relax and enjoy like never before.

Summer (March – June):

Arguably the best time to visit Uttarakhand, the temperature is at pleasant average throughout this season, making it a heaven for pilgrims, wildlife and nature lovers as well as adventure sport enthusiasts. Summers are counted as favourable to plan a trip to Uttarakhand. The temperature in summer season varies from 20°C to 35°C.

Winter (October – February):

With temperatures dropping to sub-zero levels, parts of the state are inclined to receive heavy snowfall during these months due to its geographic location. The winter season in Uttarakhand is quite cold and the season lasts from October to March. Snowfall is quite common especially in the upper regions of Uttarakhand. Tourists are advised to pack in their woolens if they make a plan to explore Uttarakhand in the winters.

Monsoon (March – September):

Uttarakhand is likely to receive heavy rainfall almost every monsoon season. The rainy season is not a very pleasant phase in Uttarakhand as the hilly parts are particularly prone to landslides. Caution is advised to visitors travelling to Uttarakhand during the monsoon.

Climate in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand experiences 3 major seasons; summers, winters and monsoon. The climate of the region is also dependent on geographical divisions which consist of hilly terrains which are predominant and the plains, which are the smaller. However just as a visit to the lower regions of Uttarakhand is advisable in the winter, the higher areas are best visited in the summer. Many tourists now visit the state during winter to enjoy snowfall.  Auli is a major winter attraction thanks to its smooth ski-slopes.

What to See and Do in the Land of Natural Beauty

uttarakhand visit best time

Uttarakhand, bordered by Nepal and Tibet, and shadowed by towering Himalayan peaks, is full of unspoiled natural beauty. It's divided into two regions—Garhwal in the north, and Kumaon in the south. Ancient holy places, mountains, forests and valleys, and an abundance of trekking options are some of the attractions that make travel to Uttarakhand worthwhile. Check out these top tourist places in Uttarakhand for inspiration.

Uttarakhand is also an excellent place to get off the beaten track. If you're looking for fresh air and tranquility, you'll love some of these boutique Himalayan getaways .

Jim Corbett National Park

One of India's most popular national parks , Jim Corbett National Park is named after hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It has dense forest and an array of wildlife, although tiger sightings aren't as common as some other places in India. The park can be explored by jeep or elephant safaris, which take place daily in the early mornings and afternoons. The Dhikala zone of the park is the most panoramic, with stunning valley views. It offers the best chance of animal sightings (which are unfortunately sometimes disappointing). If you're lucky, you might spot wild elephants.

  • Location: About five hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Ancient Haridwar (the "Gateway to God") is one of the seven holiest places in India, and one of the oldest living cities. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, it's particularly popular with Hindu pilgrims who come to take a dip in the holy waters of the fast flowing Ganges River and wash away their sins. The evening Ganga Aarti holds a special appeal.

  • Check Out Current Haridwar Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

Rishikesh, located not far from Haridwar, is as popular with western spiritual seekers as Haridwar is with Hindu pilgrims. Known as the birthplace of yoga, people flock there to meditate, do yoga, and learn about other aspects of Hinduism in the various ashrams and yoga institutes. Despite the growing number of visitors, the town's lanes and alleys retain an old-world charm. It remains a wonderful place to relax and unwind among nature.

  • Location: 40 minutes drive northeast of Haridwar.
  • Check Out Current Rishikesh Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

The hill settlement of Nainital, in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, was a popular summer retreat for the British during the time they ruled India. It features emerald colored Nainital (Naini) Lake and an action-filled strip called The Mall, lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, and markets. Enjoy one of the many forest walks, explore the surrounding area on horseback, or relax on a boat in the lake. This destination gets very crowded during summers, especially on weekends, due to its proximity to Delhi. Around Nainital, you'll find Jeolikote, Bhimtal, Ramgarh and Mukteshwar which are all less developed and quieter places to stay.

  • Location: About 6.5 hours drive east of Delhi.
  • Check Out Current Nainital Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

Mussoorie is another popular weekend destination for north Indians, as well as honeymooners. One of the main reasons for this is because it has a lot of facilities developed especially for tourists. Take a cable car to Gun Hill, enjoy a beautiful nature walk along Camel's Back Road, have a picnic at Kempty Falls, or ride a horse up to Lal Tibba (the highest peak in Mussoorie). Mussoorie also offers a superb view of the Himalayas. If you're looking for a quieter alternative nearby, check out Landour.

  • Location: About six hours drive north of Delhi and an hour from Dehradun (Uttarakhand's capital). IRCTC offers a convenient two-night weekend rail tour package from Delhi to Mussoorie.
  • Check Out Current Mussoorie Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

Almora, now the capital of the Kumaon region, was established as the summer capital of Chand kings in 1560. It attracts its share of foreigners who head to nearby Kasar Devi Temple, where Swami Vivekananda meditated. There are some chilled out places to stay in the area, such as Kasar Rainbow Resort and Mohan's Binsar Retreat,  as well as inexpensive guesthouses with private cottages just outside Almora town. Around Almora, you'll find the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kausani (where Gandhi spent time writing his  Bhagavad Gita  treatise), Ranikhet and the Jageshwar temple complex.

  • Location: About nine hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Valley of Flowers National Park

The remarkable landscape of The Valley of Flowers National Park in the Garhwal region comes alive with the monsoon rain. This high-altitude Himalayan valley has around 300 different varieties of alpine flowers, which appear as a bright carpet of color against a mountainous snow-capped background. It's a popular trekking destination, open from the start of June until the end of October.

  • Location: About 15 hours drive northeast of Delhi, plus a trek.

Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the Char Dham (four temples) mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath ). Hindus consider a pilgrimage to the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, but it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death.

Uttarakhand even has a skiing destination! Auli lies on the way to Badrinath and has a three-kilometer long slope, gondola, chairlift, and Poma ski lift. For skiing, conditions are best from the last week of January to the first week of March. However, it's dependent on good snowfall, which is variable. If you're into trekking, the Kuari Pass trailhead is at Auli. This trek, which passes through Nanda Devi National Park, is one of the state's best and most accessible. Thrillophilia offers six-day guided trips from Haridwar . There are many other hiking trails around too.

Accommodation options in Auli are scarce but Devi Darshan Lodge is recommended if you don't stay at the popular government-run Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Hotel (which offers ski programs). Alternatively, the Himalayan Abode Homestay near Joshimath is excellent, and the host is a skiing and snowboarding champion and coach. Another good option is Himalayan Eco Lodge .

  • Location: About 13 hours drive northeast of Delhi, near Joshimath.

Magical Munsiyari, a small town surrounded by towering mountains in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is paradise for mountaineers and trekkers. Blazing sunsets create a stunning backdrop of color-stained peaks there. However, the hiking and trekking routes are the biggest draws. Munsiyari is the base for the challenging nine-day Milam Glacier Trek , and the much easier two- to three-hour trek to Khalia Top is another attraction. The Tribal Heritage Museum, filled with artifacts from Munsiyari's trade with Tibet on the ancient salt route, is also worth seeing. Milam Inn , albeit basic, is the best place to stay in Munsiyari and it offers fabulous mountain views from the guest rooms.

  • Location: About 16 hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Not to be confused with the Chopta Valley in Sikkim, Chopta lies between Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, at the entry to Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. It attracts travelers who want to enjoy the great outdoors away from the crowds and development. Chopta is the starting point for treks to Tungnath temple (open from June to September) and Chandrashila summit. It's a short, yet scenic, moderate trek that can be completed in a day. Notably, the temple is the world's highest Shiva temple. Thrillophilia offers four-day guided trips from Haridwar.

  • Location: About 10 hours drive northeast of Delhi, via Rishikesh.

It's likely that you've never heard of Kalap, a tiny remote village that's only accessible by foot, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. That's because it's totally off the tourist map. A responsible tourism project was established there in 2013 to help improve the livelihoods of the villagers. Kalap is an outstanding place to get away from it all and experience the simplicity of village life or go trekking along trails followed by nomadic shepherds.

  • Location: About six hours north of Dehradun in Uttarakhand.

The Best Time To Visit Uttarakhand: Weather, Crowds, and Events

Uttarakhand, the northern state of India, is a land of breathtaking beauty, serene spirituality, and an abundance of adventure opportunities. From the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the lush green valleys, Uttarakhand offers something for every kind of traveler. However, when it comes to planning a trip to Uttarakhand, the question that often arises is, when is the best time to visit Uttarakhand?

To answer that question, let’s take a closer look at Uttarakhand’s weather, crowds, and events throughout the year.

The weather in Uttarakhand varies significantly based on the altitude and the season. The state has three distinct seasons – summer, monsoon, and winter.

  • Summer (April to June)

Summer in Uttarakhand is a magical time when the state comes alive with lush greenery, blooming flowers, and various outdoor activities. The season begins in April and lasts until June, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C. The weather in Uttarakhand during summer is pleasant and comfortable, making it the perfect time to explore the outdoors. The days are warm while the nights are cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 15°C. The higher altitude regions like Nainital and Mussoorie may experience slightly cooler temperatures, making it a perfect escape from the heat and humidity of the plains.

Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand, India

The best time to visit Uttarakhand, nestled in the northern part of India, largely depends on the type of experience you're looking for. Generally, March to April and September to October are considered ideal for most tourist activities. These months mark the transition between the harsh winter and the torrential monsoon, offering a pleasant climate suitable for sightseeing, adventure sports, and wildlife expeditions. The temperatures during these months are moderate, making it perfect for exploring the natural beauty, including flowering valleys and serene lakes. This is also an excellent time for trekkers to embark on trails to the Valley of Flowers or the Char Dham pilgrimage.

For those interested in experiencing snowfall, the winter months of November to February are the ideal time to visit destinations like Auli, which is famous for skiing. However, it's important to note that some areas in the higher altitudes may be inaccessible during this period due to heavy snowfall. Conversely, the summer months of May to June offer respite from the heat of the plains, with hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital providing cool retreats. The monsoon months, from July to August, are generally avoided due to the risk of landslides and floods, but the rains also bring out the lush greenery of the state, making scenic drives and walks very picturesque, albeit a bit risky.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is a place of myth and mountains. Hindus think of it as Dev Bhoomi – the Land of Gods – and the dramatic terrain is covered with holy peaks, lakes and rivers. Twisting roads and high-altitude hiking trails lead to spectacular pilgrimage sites where tales from Hindu epics are set. Though the presence of Shiva and Parvati (in a few of her forms) tower over the state, the imprint of British colonialism is equally apparent: the legend of hunter Jim Corbett lives on in the famed tiger reserve that bears his name; popular holiday towns were once Raj-era hill stations; and the Beatles turned Rishikesh into a magnet for spiritual seekers and yoga practitioners worldwide.

Monsoon (July - September): Uttarakhand Weather And Best Time To Visit Uttarakhand

This is the least popular season for tourists to visit Uttarakhand. The state tends to be subjected to relentless rainfall during this season. Although this makes the surrounding greenery stand out at times, the dangers of cloud bursts, landslides and flooding make it a risky place to visit. Roadways tend to be slippery, with poor visibility; and outdoor activities tend to get adversely affected by the weather conditions. Hence, travel here is not advisable during the monsoon season.

Travel Essentials For Men  If you are planning a trip and feel stumped, we have mentioned some of the most important travel essentials for men. You simply cannot miss them at any cost. This list (in no particular order) will prepare you prepared about what to pack for your trip. Headphones Even when you leave the house, you can't skip this one. If you don't encounter a bothersome whiner, what good are planes and travel? If you want to pass the time during the flight by watching TV, listening to music on your own device, or doing anything else. It's always better to have comfortable headphones of your own than the terrible headphones that airlines provide. Mens travel is incomplete without the headphones.  Shave Soap Shaving cream contributes to the total amount of liquids you are permitted to bring on travel. You'll find that each time you go on a trip, you have to purchase a new can of shaving cream, which you then have to throw out when you return. Alternatively, get a bar of travel-sized shaving soap and simply lather it up!  Battery Power  Phones are necessary, just like water. They need to be charged all the time. Your battery may drain faster while traveling because you'll be using other apps like social media and GPS, shooting more photos and videos, listening to music, and maybe watching more videos than usual. If you are worried about the life span of the battery on your phone, get a portable charger.  Valuables It is crucial to carry valuables with you when traveling, as they will undoubtedly save you from many awkward situations. Avoid putting anything valuable in your luggage. Think about your passport, wallet, camera, and phone. You should always be in the center of things. Bring a tiny purse if you would rather not keep your valuables in your pockets.  Sneakers The most visually appealing component of your ensemble is your shoes, which are also a necessity for exploring new locations. It is an accessory that you must have. Every time you visit a new place, your itinerary will determine the best shoes to wear while traveling. But choosing the right shoes is just as important as choosing the right clothes. You can choose from a variety of options, such as loafers, sneakers, travel shoes, sports shoes, etc., depending on the type.  Hand sanitizer  Towels are not as suitable or environmentally friendly as hand towels. Instead, use paper towels or tissues. It can be useful to wipe away perspiration or to pat dry your face after washing. A hand towel is among the most important items you should always carry in your bag.  Comb Traveling can be exhausting if you are stuck on an airplane for an extended period of time and don't feel refreshed. Additionally, if you want to feel clean and kept, you should brush your hair. It is also a good idea to have it in case something goes wrong with your luggage.  Wardrobe  Let's now discuss the most crucial aspect of traveling—the one you have been waiting for. How can you forget about clothes and fashion? Let's be clear. A great trip is meaningless if you can't post any eye-catching photos to brag about on Instagram. Thus, in order to rock your next trip, these are the travel essentials for men as far as clothes are concerned.  Solid Color Upper Wear When it comes to style simplicity, this is the best choice. Solid men's hoodies and other plain clothing speak to versatility. Chunky clothing isn't appropriate for every occasion. However, a basic black t-shirt can be your go-to choice for a beach walk or a party. Adding a few simple accessories and experimenting will give you a look that works for most occasions. You simply cannot bring your entire wardrobe with you when traveling, so make sure the pieces you choose are versatile. That's what you need most when traveling.  Cozy Jeans  You just cannot picture a travel bag without jeans, no matter how much you love or hate them. It is a single item that complements the atmosphere of every event. It can be difficult to choose, so go for the pair that best suits your body type, is fashionable, and works for a variety of settings. A deep blue—almost black—might be the best choice for you.  Button Downs Either in the city or the country, simple button-down shirts look great with shorts or long pants, dress shoes, or sneakers. Cotton shirts are the way to go for any situation; a button-down shirt is more adaptable than a basic t-shirt. These items are, therefore, unquestionably essentials for any traveler; a trip wouldn't be possible without them.  Styling Instruments  You simply cannot afford to miss anything when it comes to styling, smelling your best, or looking your best when you travel because it is an experience that you will cherish for the rest of your life. These are a few travel essentials for men to ensure a picture-perfect and laid-back experience.  Wrapping Up  When traveling, comfort is something you should never compromise. You need to consider what extras will contribute to a more pleasurable and seamless travel experience. Does your dopp kit have smooth, user-friendly zips, or do they clog easily? Will that pillow keep your head from dropping or keep you from slouching while flying? Ultimately, you should gather travel accessories that facilitate rather than complicate your trip. If you have thoughts to share or questions to ask about travel essentials for men, please leave a comment below. We would love to hear from you! Essential Safety Supplies To Pack On Your Backpacking Trip

BY  Nabamita Sinha Feb 3, 2024

Embarking on a backpacking trip can be an exhilarating experience, immersing yourself in nature's beauty and embracing the wilderness. However, safety should always remain a top priority amidst the excitement of exploration. Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or a novice venturing into the great outdoors, the injury lawyers in Chicago note that packing the right safety supplies for any situation can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and secure journey. Here's a comprehensive guide to essential safety supplies that should be in your backpack before hitting the trails. Backpacking TripPack Rightly: Things You Must Include In Your Backpacking Trip Ready to explore the sky-pointing peaks? Make sure to pack all the essential items, or you can ruin your entire journey. Given below are a few essential things you must never forget on your travel backpack. Check them out: First Aid Kit A well-stocked first aid kit is non-negotiable for any backpacking excursion. It should include bandages, adhesive tape, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, scissors, pain relievers, blister treatment, and any personal medications you may need. It is recommended that your kit be based on the length and location of your trip, ensuring you're prepared to handle common injuries and ailments that may arise on the trail. Navigation Tools Getting lost in the wilderness can quickly turn a thrilling adventure into a nightmare. Always carry reliable navigation tools such as a map, compass, or GPS device, and make sure you know how to use them effectively. Familiarize yourself with the terrain and plan your route to minimize the risk of getting off track. Emergency Shelter Unforeseen circumstances like sudden changes in weather or unexpected delays can leave you stranded outdoors. Pack lightweight emergency shelter options such as a tent footprint, emergency bivvy, or space blanket to provide protection from the elements and retain body heat in case you need to spend an unexpected night in the wilderness. Fire Starter Kit Fire can be a lifesaving resource in survival situations, providing warmth, light, and a means to cook food. Pack waterproof matches, a lighter, or a fire starter tool to ensure you can easily ignite a flame even in damp conditions. Additionally, carry some fire accelerants like cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly for reliable fire starting. Water Purification System Access to clean water is vital for staying hydrated and healthy during your backpacking trip. Invest in a reliable water purification system such as a portable water filter, water purification tablets, or a UV water purifier to treat water from natural sources like streams and lakes safely. Avoid drinking untreated water to prevent waterborne illnesses. Multi-Tool A multi-tool is a versatile gadget that combines several essential tools into one compact package. Opt for a quality multi-tool that includes features like a knife, scissors, screwdriver, pliers, and bottle opener. It can come in handy for various tasks, from repairing gear to preparing food, making it an indispensable item for any backpacker. Emergency Communication Device In remote wilderness areas, cell phone reception may need to be more reliable and present, making it challenging to call for help in case of an emergency. Carry an emergency communication device such as a satellite phone, personal locator beacon (PLB), or two-way radio to summon assistance if you encounter a serious injury or other life-threatening situations. Sun Protection For Your Backpacking Trip Exposure to the sun's harmful rays can lead to sunburn, heat exhaustion, and dehydration, particularly at higher altitudes. Do not forget to carry some essential sun protection products like sunscreen that carries a high SPF rating, sunglasses with UV protection, a broadly-brimmed hat, and lightweight clothing that covers your skin to shield yourself from the sun's intense glare. Insect Repellent Insect bites and stings can not only be irritating but also carry the risk of transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease or West Nile virus. Apply insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin to exposed skin and clothing to ward off mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and other pesky bugs that inhabit outdoor environments. Emergency Whistle In situations where verbal communication may be difficult or impossible, an emergency whistle can serve as a simple yet effective signaling device to attract attention and alert others to your presence. Keep it easily accessible on your backpack or person, and use short bursts to signal for help if needed. Volume  Secondly, your backpack’s volume should be large enough so that it can hold everything you carry. However, don’t buy something extravagant and carry unnecessary weight. Backpacking carryons are usually measured in terms of liters, so be sure to pack something only in the range of 40-70 liters. 2023 was an exceptional year for anime . And if the first weeks of 2024 are any indication, audiences can likely expect another great year of terrific shows.

From new seasons of returning favorites like My Hero Academia , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Sound! Euphonium , and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation to exciting new premieres like Delicious in Dungeon , Kaiju No. 8 , Dragon Ball Daima , and Lazarus , anime fans have a lot to look forward to in 2024.

To help you keep up with everything that’s coming out this year, we’ve gathered a quorum of Polygon’s resident anime lovers to create a list of the year’s best in anime. For clarity and convenience, these shows are presented in reverse chronological order, so the newest releases will always show up first. We’ll be updating our list periodically, season by season, so check in regularly to see what new, what’s hot, and most importantly of all — what’s best. Enjoy!

Bucchigiri?!

A close-up shot of a black-haired anime boy blushing with pink-ribboned bells and baby chickens surrounding his expression.

Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Sk8 the Infinity director Hiroko Utsumi is back with yet another original anime series. This time it’s a fantasy comedy about Araji Tomobishi, a shy young student who transfers to a new school filled with roughnecks and gangsters. Worse yet, he gets possessed by a powerful genie whose power inadvertently pits him between two of the strongest gangs in his school. To top it off, the poor guy just wants to lose his virginity, and instead he just ends up accidentally punching people, getting himself into increasingly deadlier and more precarious situations.

If you’re looking for a nonsensical action comedy with over-the-top antics, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure -esque battles, and memorable character designs, Bucchigiri?! is an absolute delight. —Toussaint Egan

Brave Bang Bravern!

A blue horned robot staring at a red and white robot as it poses dramatically with an animated logo graphic holographically projected behind it.

Fans of last year’s Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury , rejoice: There’s another great giant robot anime to watch this year, and once more, it’s also easily one of the funniest anime comedies of 2024.

Directed by veteran mecha anime director Masami Ōbari, Brave Bang Bravern! follows the story of Isami Ao and Lewis Smith, two mech pilots who meet during a joint American-Japanese military exercise in Hawaii. When their military base is besieged by an extraterrestrial threat, all hope seems lost — until a gigantic humanoid robot named Bravern comes to save the day... but only if Isami agrees to pilot him.

Where exactly did Bravern come from, though, and how does he know who Isami is? The answer, for right now at least, is don’t worry about it — just vibe! A big-hearted parody of “super robot” anime with explosive action, fun characters, and intense homoerotic overtones, Brave Bang Bravern! is an early contender for one of my favorite anime of 2024. —TE

Metallic Rouge

A woman standing in a forest of glowing alien-like plants, surrounded by a halo of light as intricate circular symbols bath the upper half of her body in Metallic Rouge.

Bones, the critically acclaimed studio behind popular anime like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood , Eureka Seven , Mob Psycho 100 , and My Hero Academia , is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. What better way to celebrate the iconic production house than with an all-new original anime that combines tokusatsu-inspired action with a byzantine sci-fi conspiracy plot?

Set in a future where humanity has colonized the inner solar system and androids known as “Neans” serve their every beck and call, Metallic Rouge follows the story of Rouge Redstar — a Nean with the ability to disguise herself as a human who is dispatched to Mars on a top-secret mission. Along with her partner Naomi Orthmann, Rouge battles against a terrorist faction of androids bent on toppling society, all while transforming into a superpowered armored battle form known as “Metal Rouge.”

Co-written by Yutaka Izubuchi ( RahXephon ) and Toshizo Nemoto ( Log Horizon ), the series feels like a pitch-perfect throwback to the aesthetic and storytelling of early-aughts sci-fi anime, complete with wild left-field plot twists, dense world-building, and a New Jack Swing-inspired bop of a theme song . It’s certainly an entertaining watch, one which demands repeat viewings in order to pick up on every new detail and clue the series manages to throw at its audience. —TE

Solo Leveling

A black-haired anime boy in a blue hoodie with blood stains on his face holding a sword in a dark hallway.

Going into Solo Leveling , I didn’t know anything about it other than it was one of the most anticipated anime releases of the season; I didn’t even look up the premise before diving in. By the time the credits rolled on the third episode, I honestly still couldn’t have told you what precisely was happening in Solo Leveling , but I did know I was hooked.

Blending typical fantasy adventure beats with video game elements, Solo Leveling is a unique and thrilling take on the typical zero-to-hero narrative. Sung Jin-woo is not the most dynamic protagonist, I must admit, but the spectacular animation, impeccably choreographed action, and relentlessly paced storytelling always leaves me itching to smash play on the next episode. —Sadie Gennis

Delicious in Dungeon

A group of adventurers in various outfits and armor dissecting a mushroom monster to cook in Delicious in Dungeon.

Where to watch: Netflix

Delicious in Dungeon (also known as Dungeon Meshi ) is the anime this year, sporting a fun cast of characters and a delightful plot: As a crew of adventurers makes their way through a dungeon to save one of their fallen mates, they are trying to save money by eating the creatures they slay. It turns out that the critters down in this labyrinth are more edible than expected . Along the way, the gang learns a lot about the dungeon and the people inside of it through analyzing the creatures they slay and eat.

The author behind Delicious in Dungeon , Ryoko Kui, has a clear love for the fantasy genre, as you can really see her attention to detail when it comes to fantasy races, designs, and world-building that would rival even the best Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Masters. All of the characters are charming in their own ways, and each episode will leave you more excited for the next one. —Julia Lee

President Biden to visit southern border on the same day as Donald Trump

uttarakhand visit best time

WASHINGTON − President Joe Biden plans to make a rare visit to the southern border Thursday − the same day former President Donald Trump plans his own border stop − to call Republicans out for blocking border legislation .

Biden will visit Brownsville, Texas , a White House official said, to meet with Border Patrol agents, law enforcement officials and local leaders. Trump, the front-runner to win the Republican nomination, had already scheduled a visit Thursday to Eagle Pass, Texas, about 325 miles away from Brownsville.

Biden's trip − the second to the border of his presidency − comes as record migration at the U.S.-Mexico border remains one his biggest election liabilities.

But in a major political shift, Biden has embraced tougher rhetoric on the border and blamed congressional Republicans for inaction after they killed legislation this month − at Trump's urging − that would have created some of the most aggressive border restrictions in years.

It's an attempt to flip the script ahead of the 2024 presidential election by turning an issue that has historically hurt Democrats into a Biden campaign win.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

"Every day between now and November, the American people are going to know that the only reason the border is not secure is Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican friends," Biden said after Republicans blocked the border bill from getting a Senate vote.

Biden's only other visit to the southern border came in January 2023, when he stopped in El Paso, Texas , en route to meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador about stemming migration.

Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign's national press secretary, slammed Biden's visit in a statement, saying his "last-minute, insincere attempt to chase President Trump to the border won’t cut it."

"Americans know Biden is single-handedly responsible for the worst immigration crisis in history," Leavitt said.

During Biden's visit Thursday, the president will discuss "the urgent need" to pass the border security legislation, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

"He will reiterate his calls for congressional Republicans to stop playing politics and to provide the funding needed for additional U.S. Border Patrol agents, more asylum officers, fentanyl detection technology and more," Jean-Pierre said.

With the border legislation stalled, Biden is considering executive action under federal immigration powers once used by Trump to achieve some of the policies in the legislation, risking a backlash from progressives and immigration advocates.

The border legislation, which was negotiated by a team of Democratic and Republican senators, would have given the Biden administration the power to shut down the border to migrants crossing illegally when daily crossings exceed a daily average of 4,000 in any one-week period.

And if migrant border encounters surpass an average of 5,000 a day − a threshold now met − the Department of Homeland Security would have been required to close the border to migrants seeking to cross without authorization between ports of entry.

The Associated Press reported Biden is exploring executive action under Section 212(f) of the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act to achieve similar restrictions on asylum-seekers trying to enter the U.S. illegally.

Trump cited the same power in 2018 to stop accepting asylum-seekers at the border − action later blocked in the courts − and to ban the entry of people from certain Muslim-majority nations.

Jean-Pierre declined to say whether Biden will be announcing any new policies during the trip but said "no executive action" can duplicate the bipartisan border bill.

"I don't have a reaction to the former president," Jean-Pierre said when asked about Trump's dueling visit. "Not going to speak to his schedule."

Even before any executive action is taken, progressive Democrats are pushing back, underscoring the delicate line Biden must walk as he navigates the border crisis in an election year.

The House Congressional Hispanic Caucus has said its members oppose unilateral attempts by the White House to overhaul the asylum system.

Republicans, who for years have hammered Democrats as soft on border security, are overwhelmingly viewed more favorably on the border.  An NBC poll this month  found more voters view Trump, by 57%-22%, as the better candidate than Biden to secure the border and control immigration.
