The fascinating town of Diglipur is the largest town in North Andaman Islands and yet often goes unnoticed because of its distance from other popular tourist attractions (Havelock and Port Blair). But, perhaps it is this same distance that makes Diglipur such a different and adventurous place!

With its rich flora and fauna, natural parks, and lively marine life; There are so many options of how to actively spend your holidays here. From climbing the highest peak in the Bay of Bengal to exploring the breathtaking twin islands of Ross and Smith, observing an active mud volcano, or witnessing turtles (nesting and hatching) in pristine beaches, Diglipur is a wonder for all.

• Diglipur is an offbeat destination and few tourists go here
• It can be reached by road ( 12 hours) and ferry ( 8 to 12 hours) from Port Blair.
• Diglipur is for adventure lovers. A visit to Ross and Smith island, climbing Saddle peak, and watching turtle nesting are the key reasons for visiting.
• The Diglipur town has only a few places of interest. The area nearby called Kalipur is where most people stay and that’s where most of the adventure is.
• There are only a few resorts and accommodations. The most popular being Pristine Resort and Turtle Nest Resort.

One must ideally spend at least 2 days in Diglipur to enjoy its many attractions.

How to Reach Diglipur?

Situated far up in the North Andaman, Diglipur is around 290km by road and 180km by sea from Port Blair. Tourists can choose to travel by road or by sea.

If you only want to visit Diglipur in the North, the best option would be to take a ship. There are direct government ship services available 3-4 times per week from Port Blair ( please check the schedule in advance ).  The whole journey takes around 10 hours and longer but more convenient overnight sails are also available. Tickets can be booked at the Phoenix Bay office or at the administration block by ‘the Dolphin roundabout’ in Diglipur.

One can also travel up north by Andaman Trunk Road, crossing three creeks on the way and the Jarawa tribe area. The journey however is exhausting and it can take up to 12 long hours. There are a number of early morning buses plying daily from Port Blair to Diglipur. The tickets need to be bought in advance at least a day prior to the travel date.

There are also private AC buses available offering more comfort but are pricier. Buses are available for the Port Blair Central Bus Stop in Aberdeen Bazaar, every day at 4 am in the morning. However, seats are limited and require advance booking to travel

One can also rent a private AC car. This is highly recommended especially if you would like to stop on the way to Diglipur. Places like Baratang, Rangat, and Mayabunder have beautiful beaches and other attractions. Prices from Port Blair to Diglipur start from INR 5000 one way but will increase based on your itinerary.

The Andaman Tourism Website mentions the services of seaplanes and helicopter facilities that fly between Diglipur and Port Blair. However, this is not true. Seaplanes no longer function.

Helicopters do but are only meant for medical emergencies. If extra seats are available, Tourists can book them. These seats are limited and cost about INR 5000 (starting) per person.

The Andamans aren’t just sea and sand as most would assume. Impressive natural attractions up north prove that there is so much more to the islands. Diglipur is like an enormous outdoor adventure amusement park specially designed for nature lovers.

Here are the top things to do at Diglipur:

1. Climb Saddle Peak

At 732 m, Saddle Peak is the highest point of the archipelago in the Bay of Bengal. The surroundings are a bio-diverse natural paradise as the thick jungle offers a home to over 13 indigenous bird species, 36 indigenous species of insects, and 6 species of indigenous trees.

Due to the richness of the forest territory, it is now made into a National Park which offers lovey aerial views of the nearby islands for those, who do manage the tough climb. The climb is steep and 8kms long. On a sunny day, it could be a challenge for some of the most experienced trekkers too! Kalpong, the only river of Andamans flows through the forest and offers a refreshing freshwater stream where water is still drinkable.

How to get there :   A permit has to be obtained by the Forest Department office at the trailhead. It costs Rs 25 for Indians and Rs 250 for foreign tourists (as of December 2019) and you can buy it from 6 am to 2 pm. leave early and return before sunset.

2. Swim at Ross and Smith

The islands of Ross and Smith are a sight to behold.

These majestic twin islands are connected by a thin fifty-meter-long sand bar. This silky white sand bar descends inside the sea at times of high tide and surfaces up again during low tide. The warm waters are crystal clear and the untamed virgin beaches are one of the most picture-perfect ones you will see on the islands.

The best part is that the beach is seldom crowded and most of the time you can cherish the whole sight by yourself. Smith Island has the most facilities; spacious bamboo huts with plenty of shade, changing rooms and toilets can be found. Ross island is covered with dense forests and can be visited by crossing the sand bar, not many ventures out there.

How to get there : To visit these serene islands one has to go on a fiber boat. The process goes like this:

• Reach Aerial bay jetty and first obtain permission from the Forest Office as Ross Island is a Marine Sanctuary and a protected area.
• Buy a ticket for a boat. A 6 seater boat costs about 5000/INR and stays there for 4 hours between 7 am and 4 pm.
• You can rent a private boat or wait for more travelers to come and share. This could take a while as Diglipur doesn’t see a lot of tourists.
• The boat ride takes about half an hour and it is quite enjoyable admiring the pristine sands from afar.

3. Watch Turtle Nesting/hatching at Kalipur Beach

If you visit Diglipur between December and April, chances are that you will be able to spot turtles nesting and hatching. Kalipur is one of the few beaches in the world, where four species of sea turtles (Olive Ridley, Leather Back, Hawksbill, and Green Turtles) come to nest their eggs.

For this purpose, the government has built a hatchery there and if lucky you can witness both turtles laying their eggs (late at night) or baby turtles being set free into the sea (early morning).

The beach has volcanic grey-colored sand and crystal clear water. This makes it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Unfortunately, there are sand flies so sunbathing is not advisable. During low tide, the beach looks sullen with dead corals breaking the surface and some mangrove trees embracing the shore.

How to get there : Kalipur village is situated about 8 km from the aerial bay jetty and 15kms from the Diglipur town. you can easily find an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) or a taxi. Buses ply every 30 minutes.

4. Trek to See Active Mud Volcanoes

The Mud volcanoes in Diglipur are natural wonders hidden amidst dense forest cover. These, like their siblings in Baratang, are small muddy craters created by natural gases emitted by decaying organic matter underground which slowly pushes the mud upwards. It is not a spectacular sight, as most of the time there is just a pile of dried mud and small bubbling puddles. However one can wander around 41 active muddy craters, enjoying the surrounding nature and wildlife.

The best time to visit it is early in the morning as the temperature is lower and the weather less humid.

How to get there : It is situated about 40kms from Diglipur town, near Shyam Nagar village. To reach this unusual attraction, one has to follow the small trail into the jungle from the parking lot. No special permits are requested for visiting and there is no entrance. Shared Jeeps, busses, and private taxis are options for travel.

5. Relax at Lamia Bay Beach

At the foot of the saddle peak trekking path and about 2kms from Kalipur beach lies Lamia Bay AKA pebble beach. This is a great place for local fishing and also has a few turtle hatcheries. Not many tourists know about this beach.

How to get there : Buses go here every half an hour from Diglipur town. Private Taxi and Rickshaws are also easily available on the way to the beach (not back).

6. Restricted Places With Permit

There are 3 more places that are often mentioned when one talks of activities in Diglipur. They are the Kalpong Hydroelectric Power Plant, Craggy island, and Alfred Caves. These require a special permit for entry and are not generally open for tourism (As of March 2020). Do not venture out here without proper permission.

How long to stay in Diglipur?

Diglipur is a vast region that people mostly visit for Kalipur turtle nestling and the Saddle Peak Trekking. But there are more places of interest like Alfred caves and the Craggy island which are slowly opening up as tourism destinations. For this ideally, a 2-3 day getaway would be ideal to cover all.

When to visit Diglipur?

The ideal time to visit the region is in the winter months when the sea isn’t rough and you get to places. Also, the summer months can be quite hot to travel to island towns like Diglipur. So, it’s best to visit from October – April when conditions are ideal for long journeys and explorations. Also, this is the time when the turtle nesting and hatching happen

Getting Around Diglipur

Getting around Diglipur and its scattered attractions is time and sometimes can be nerve-consuming, especially if you are traveling on a budget. There are crowded but cheap local buses available. These buses are few and if you miss one prepare for a long wait till the next one.

The majority of the sights are quite far away and traveling on a bus can take up to one day for one attraction. Shared public jeeps are another faster option but again, these are pricier and not always easily available.

We suggest that those who want to travel in comfort either book a scooter ( cost about 500/day and available at the Diglipur market) or hire a car with a driver (do bargain ).

Hotels and Resorts in Diglipur?

Pristine Beach Resort

The best accommodation available in the region is the Pristine Beach Resort in Kalipur. The rooms range from 600 to 3000INR based on the accommodation facilities and the categories.

Kalipur is the most visited place in Diglipur and people often stay here and visit other places. Apart from the Pristine Beach Resort, there are some government-run guesthouses like the Turtle Nesting Resort, APWD Guest Houses which have AC rooms at 2000 INR and non-AC rooms at 600 INR. However, availability depends on prior booking in these government guest houses.

Several other smaller tourist lodges are also available but they might not be that reliable .

Restaurants in Diglipur?

Diglipur is not a major tourist destination and thus the local eateries serve only local food. But don’t get us wrong, some of them are delicious. Try the thalis (south Indian and Bengali) and ask for the day’s catch (if you enjoy seafood).

For more continental cuisine, you will need to travel to Kalipur. The resort there offers all types of north Indians and a small selection of Chinese and Italian dishes.  Though pricey, it is the best and only option available.

Diglipur has also a huge market with one of the best selections of vegetables and fruits in the Andamans. There are also shops selling refreshments, sweet and salty junk food, and other snacks. Chai and fresh coconut water can be bought around the market area.

The only place to stay and eat lovely food here is the Pristine Beach Resort. However, other places also offer good non-vegetarian foods. Most places sell local seafood and non-vegetarian delicacies. Vegetarian restaurants are hard to find here and are almost not existent. However, you can get vegetarian food at the Pristine Beach Resort if you order in advance and are willing to wait.

The New Hira Family Restaurant, located in Shubhashgram is a good restaurant if you are looking for some other food options other than your tourist lodge and the pristine resort. They serve delicious and affordable food and they understand the hospitality expected by the guests coming in. it’s safe to try out food from this restaurant.

Important Information About Diglipur

1. currency.

Diglipur is a town area with a good number of the population here so ATMs serving Indian currencies are readily available. Indian currency is the only currency accepted here as in other Andaman islands. However, it’s better to carry enough cash and that too in accepted denominations while traveling. 2000 rupee and 500 rupee notes might be a problem here so get those sorted at Port Blair.

2. Communication and Internet

BSNL connections work the best.  Although Vodafone and Airtel connections may work their connectivity will be weak. Internet connection in resorts might not be that well.

3. Supermarkets/Bazars

Diglipur is a bustling town, one of the biggest towns in Andaman so local markets are available in many places. Most of these are meant for the locals and offer a glimpse of their life and living conditions. However, few shops selling local handicrafts and other products can be seen in these bazaars.

In terms of safety, Diglipur might not be as safe as Neil or Havelock, or Port Blair. But the overall friendly and helpful nature of the Andaman people makes it a good place to visit. However, please listen to the authorities and take adequate safety measures while traveling. Don’t visit restricted areas without a permit and be careful while Snorkeling or scuba diving. Interact with the locals as much as you want but don’t try to exploit them with incentives to visit restricted and inaccessible places. Please abide by rules and regulations and don’t take corals and sea creatures home.

Also while traveling, make sure you have a day’s time in hand for your return flight to the mainland. Don’t plan the flight the same day you return from Diglipur.

Diglipur in Andaman is popular for its scenic natural beauty and rare wildlife experiences like the turtle nesting and turtle hatching.

The whole of north Andaman has turtle nesting sites protected by the forest department. However, Diglipur is particularly famous because the forest department has created well-protected nurseries here for the hatching and they have designated guides and accommodation available near the nestling ground that makes it easier to spot the turtle hatchings. Diglipur only be accessed through Port Blair. There’s no provision to access Diglipur from Neil or Havelock. However, an alternate travel entry point can be drawn from Neil and Havelock via Rangat. Some private boat rides are available from Neil and Havelock to Rangat and you can enter Diglipur from there. However, this route is quite tricky and not supported by tourism so you are at the mercy of your service providers. So, be careful of you attempting such a thing.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

This beach is perhaps one of the less crowded beaches in the Andamans. The Ram Nagar Beach is ideal for some water-fun but it is not for beginners. Andaman Tourism Opens: The Andaman & Nicobar administration has announced that all tourist spots in the South Andaman district will be opened for tourism activities with immediate effect 8 Feb 2022.

RT PCR report on arrival

A negative RT PCR report has to be presented by all passengers on arrival.

What is the advisory to travel to North & Middle Andaman District?

The tourists are allowed to visit Baratang/North & Middle Andaman on production of double dose covid certificate/ All other passengers viz. unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers (those who have taken only 1S1 dose of COVID vaccine) shall have to produce RT-PCR negative test report

• All asymptomatic fully vaccinated persons coming to these islands from mainland are  exempted  from the requirement of carrying RT-PCR negative test report,irrespective of the type of vaccine received and country of origin. Such fullyvaccinated individuals shall produce the final vaccination certificate at the origin airport ,  sea port in the mainland and at Port Blair Airport / sea port.
• Alt asymptomatic children below 5 years of age are exempted from carrying RT-PCR negative test report and further RT-PCR testing at Port Blair Airport.
• All other passengers viz. unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers (those who have taken only 1S1 dose of COVID vaccine) shall have to produce RT-PCR negative test report to travel to Port Blair from the mainland, as is the practice now. Such an RT-PCR test should have been taken within 48 hours prior to commencement of journey from the origin airport connecting Port Blair. Such passengers will also have to undergo additional RT-PCR test on arrival at Port Blair. Such passengers shall remain in self-quarantine till the arrival of the test report.
• If a passenger on arrival is tested positive then, the prescribed quarantine protocol is to be followed.
• All Airlines shall ensure strict compliance of this order and observance of COVID Appropriate Behaviour. Any non-compliance shall invite action under Disaster Management Act and other applicable laws. 

General Guidelines defined for traveling to Andaman Islands during COVID :

• The Tourism Activities are permitted only in South Andaman & North & Middle Andaman District except Nicobar District.
• Persons above 65 years of age, persons with home co-morbidities, pregnant women and children below the age of 10 years advised not to travel for tourism purposes.
• Tourists/Visitors who are at higher risk due to some medical history are advised to take extra precautions.
• Tourists/visitors shall minimize contact with other staff and visitors as far as possible and zero contact policy should be followed at all tourist destinations.
• All tourists/visitors shall be briefed by the hotel concerned about do’s & don’ts to be mandatorily followed during their stay and movements.
• While travelling tourists/visitors should wear a face mask and carry their own sanitizer and wet wipes for personal use.
• At all tourist destinations, staff must wear face masks and wash/sanitize hands regularly while performing their duties.

What are the guidelines for testing for tourists coming to Andaman after August 03 2021?

On arrival at Port Blair : 1. The tourists need to carry COVID-19 negative test report from mainland based 1CMR approved lab using Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTPCR). However, the sample for RTPCR test should have been taken within 48 hours prior to starting the journey from the origin station. (For e.g. if the tourist takes a flight from Delhi at 0600 hrs. on 1st September, 2021, the sample for RTPCR test should have been taken not before 0600 hrs. on 30th August, 2021). 2. The tourists/visitors on arrival at Port Blair airport have to undergo mandatory Covid-19 screening with RTPCR test free of cost. Thereafter the tourists/visitors are allowed to move to their respective hotels. However, they will have to be under quarantine at Port Blair in their hotel rooms until the result of RTPCR tests are received. What if the tourists test positive after arriving at the Andaman Islands?

If the tourists tests positive during their stay in the Islands, he/she will need to undergo institutional isolation as per existing health protocols. The cost of such isolation for govt. facility will be paid by the tourists as fixed by the administration from time to time. If the patient wants to stay at hotels, he/she can stay in the hotels if all the conditions below are met: a) Patients are not symptomatic and not more than 60 years old. b) Request/ undertaking is made by patient in writing. c)lf allowed by doctors. Hotels will make necessary arrangements to designate a part of their rooms for institutional isolation for this purpose.

Diglipur Island Andaman Travel Guide | Diglipur Places to Visit

Diglipur is a town located in the North Andaman Island of the north and Middle Andaman district. Though the town in itself doesn’t have a lot of tourism potential, the villages and beaches around the area is what we’ll be covering in this Diglipur travel guide. Diglipur has a mixed population of Bengali, Malayali, Tamil and Telugu people and Hindi is widely spoken and understood everywhere here.

My visit to Diglipur was planned rather spontaneously and came to fruition at the very last minute. I had been in Port Blair for 8 days waiting for the cyclone to clear so the ferries heading to Hut Bay in Little Andaman could resume. I had told myself that I’d wait exactly 2 more days and if things still appear bleak, I would head somewhere else. Quite serendipitously, I received a message on Instagram by a fellow blogger and traveller asking me if I wanted to join her on a road trip to Diglipur with two other people. It felt like the timing had been just right and so, without a second thought, I agreed. And that is the story behind how this Diglipur travel guide was born!

How to Reach Diglipur Island

There are several ways to reach Diglipur from Port Blair. This Diglipur travel guide will take you through the details of all three methods to reach Diglipur, including be land, air and sea:

Diglipur Island by Road

Disclaimer: if you’re planning to do a road trip to Diglipur, be ware that the road conditions aren’t ideal. The roads used to be taken care of by PWD and since the NHAI has taken over, they are redoing the roads starting from Chidiya Tapu in South Andaman. There’s still some time to go before they can reach all the way up to North Andaman. Moreover, because of COVID, you need extra time to get your vaccination cards verified. We’ll get into the details of this in a bit in this Diglipur travel guide.

The roads from Port Blair to Diglipur go through the infamous Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) that cuts through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve. For this reason, during a road trip to Diglipur, vehicles are not allowed to stop along the Jarawa Reserve. Passengers are also not allowed to photograph the journey through the Jarawa Reserve. You might also spot some Jarawa people along the way – I did on my way back from Diglipur to Port Blair – but make sure to not interact with them (wave/ speak at) in any way since this is a legal offence.

The Jarawas are a negrito tribe who have lived uncontacted for many years but the ATR threatens their lifestyle. Some Jarawas, however, have been integrated into mainstream society. For example, Strait Island near Long Island in Middle Andaman is inhabited only by Jarawa people who hold government jobs such as school teachers, police officials, forest rangers and more. Outsiders (tourists and islanders alike) are not allowed to enter the Strait Island.

Anyway, getting back on the topic of this Diglipur travel guide:

One way to reach Diglipur is by hiring a private taxi . There are only SUV taxis available to Diglipur due to the road conditions. These usually cost about INR 18,000 for a round trip of three days. This is how I initially went up to Diglipur from Port Blair with 3 other people. The journey took us 15 hours with ample rest and food stops in between.

Another way to reach Diglipur by road is to hop on to a shared tempo traveller taxi from Port Blair. These cost somewhere around INR 1500 and the journey takes 12 hours to complete. These are AC taxis and a rather comfortable way of reaching Diglipur. However, these shared taxis must be booked in advance. You can find out the contacts around the Port Blair bus stand. The cheapest way to reach Diglipur by road is by bus . There are both private and government (STS) buses running this route. Tickets for the private operator Anand Travels can be booked online here . According to this Diglipur travel guide, this is the most convenient way to travel to Diglipur by bus since the Anand bus has pushback seats.

There are two types of government (STS) buses running through the ATR: one is Express the other is ordinary. The only difference between the two is that Express does not stop in the middle to pick up passengers on the go. It only takes passengers who have pre-booked their seats. You can do so at least a day prior from the Port Blair bus stand. The ordinary STS bus stops to pick up passengers on the way, making it slower.

To regulate traffic through the ATR, there are a set number of conveys running each day from Jirkatang. So make sure to check with your driver and start accordingly. I know it can be a little bit of a challenge to travel through the ATR, but the route is beautiful and is one experience of a lifetime! Trust this Diglipur travel guide, going through all these troubles is definitely worth it because Diglipur is just that mesmerising!

Diglipur Island by Sea

To reach Diglipur by sea, there are two alternative routes you can take. One is the inter-island Port Blair to Diglipur ferry that sails from Phoenix Bay Jetty in Port Blair to the Aerial Bay Jetty in Diglipur two days a week. This journey takes a little less than 12 hours to complete. This Diglipur travel guide recommends taking the Coral Queen ship. It is newer and well-maintained as compared to the other ships running this journey.

The other way to reach Diglipur by sea is to take the government line ferry that sets sail from Port Blair and touches Havelock Island , Neil Island , and Long Island and finally stops at Rangat. These Andaman line ferries operate about 3 to 5 times a week. From Rangat, you can continue the journey to Diglipur by road. This is definitely a great way to reach Diglipur as per this Diglipur travel guide. You can even consider halting your journey at Long Island for a few days before resuming to Diglipur!

Diglipur Island by Air

There are three possible ways to reach Diglipur by air in this Diglipur travel guide. The first option is to take the Pawan Hans Helicopter service between Port Blair and Diglipur. This service runs 5 times a week and takes only 1.5 hours to complete! However, this is a fairly expensive journey for tourists – which costs about INR 3500 one way. Getting a seat on the helicopter service is also a bit tricky since most of them are reserved for government officials and medical emergencies. Tourists are only given a seat if there’s one remaining at the last minute.

The next option to reach Diglipur by air according to the travel guide is to take the seaplane service that used to operate from Port Blair to Diglipur before the COVID lockdown. This service has since not resumed but people seem hopeful that it might be operational once again soon.

The last option to reach Diglipur by air according to this Diglipur travel guide is not yet functional. It is by taking a flight to the Diglipur Airport which was supposed to start getting constructed in June 2019 but got delayed due to COVID restrictions.

COVID restrictions have been quite a buzzkill in the Andaman tourist industry, eh?

How to Get Around in Diglipur Island

The easiest way to get around in Diglipur is to have your own private cab . But this, of course, is not always possible due to budget restrictions. Alternatively, there are several two-wheeler rentals in Diglipur available throughout the Diglipur bazar. But be prepared to be riding through some incredibly bumpy roads! For the hardy travellers who don’t mind roughing it out – *cough* much like myself *cough* – the local bus service in Diglipur is quite feasible throughout the region. Taking the bus is my personal recommendation in this Diglipur travel guide as it is safe, convenient and most importantly, cost-effective!

Best Time to Visit Diglipur Island

The best time to visit Diglipur Island depends on what are the most important activities for you to do. The monsoons and the post-monsoon cyclone season usually ends by the first week of December. So from mid-December to April is usually a good time to visit Diglipur, or anywhere in the Andaman Islands.

However, if you’re looking to specifically experience the turtle nesting at Kalipur and Ramnagar Beaches, hiking the Saddle Peak and the swiftlet nestings at Alfred Caves, mid-December through late January is usually the best time to visit Diglipur Island.

For experiencing turtle hatching, swimming and snorkelling, this Diglipur travel guide recommends that February to April is usually the best time to visit Diglipur Island. During these months, the waters remain beautifully calm and you can even swim from Kalipur Beach to Craggey Island if you are a seasoned swimmer! (Details below)

Where to Stay in Diglipur Island – Pristine Beach Resort

Though Diglipur has slowly started to come up on the tourist map, there are a few places to stay in Diglipur that have propped up both in the town and on the beachside village of Kalipur. But if you ask me about places to stay in Diglipur, I would recommend the Pristine Beach Resort in Kalipur without batting an eye. This resort is run by Mr Alex Rajan and is the oldest private place in the Diglipur region that has been welcoming tourists for as long as 2008! Back then, he started off with a few rooms and mostly international clientele but now it’s a full-fledged resort with several room categories, a fully functional restaurant and a bar. Trust this Diglipur travel guide, Pristine Beach Resort is the place to be!

Pristine Beach Resort comes with 3 different room categories to suit most budgets. They have beautiful wooden cottages lined up one after the other amidst endless coconut and areca nut palm trees. Apart from these, they also have basic wooden huts for long term rentals they give out to volunteers or researchers. Mr Alex’s is a massive property with several fruits and vegetables growing right in his backyard. These include bananas, papayas, almonds, chiku, lentils, ladyfingers, brinjals and more. The resort also has a WiFi connection in a region where even BSNL mobile connectivity is hard to find. Mr Alex himself is a warm and friendly host who makes for an excellent company over dinnertime when you’ve come back from your explorations during the day. The food here is yum, and very reasonably priced.

One quick property tour with Mr Alex and you’ll understand how much love and effort has been put into Pristine Beach Resort. He has painstakingly built this resort with his father and has singlehandedly put the Diglipur map on the tourist radar. For a Diglipur travel guide, there is no other place I would recommend!

Diglipur Places to Visit

There are some incredible places to visit in Diglipur Andaman. I spent a week in the area, taking one day at a time to slowly go around all these places. Let’s dive into the Diglipur places to visit section of this Diglipur travel guide!

Kalipur Beach for Turtle Nesting and Hatching

The Kalipur Beach, on which the Pristine Beach Resort is located, is a haven to witness turtle nesting and hatching. Several kinds of turtles come here to lay eggs – including Olive Ridley , Hawk’s Bill and Leatherback Sea Turtles. Since this Diglipur beach is a black sand beach, it makes it perfect to witness the massive sea turtles lay their eggs here. During the nesting months of December and January, Mr Alex from Pristine Beach Resort often keeps a track of the high tide timings at night and takes his guests on a walk to try the luck with a turtle sighting. During the spring months of March and April, you can witness these eggs hatch and tiny turtles make their way to the sea! This is one of the most wonderful Diglipur places to see – and definitely on the top of my Diglipur travel guide!

Alfred Caves and Ramnagar Beach

Alfred Caves are probably one of the most fascinating places to visit in Diglipur Andaman. Located in Ramnagar village, Alfred Caves are a set of 41 stone caves. On the surface, there’s nothing much exciting about them but once you climb down the 10 feet caves on all fours, you enter a whole different world altogether. The ground is a thick layer of bat poop and tiny bats can be seen whizzing past all around you. But what’s really special is that these caves are home to the Edible-nest Swiftlet nestings. These nests are made by swiftlet birds by hardening their saliva. The best time to witness this marvel is in late December/ January. Mr Alex from Pristine Beach Resort can put you in touch with a guide and that is the best and most sensible way to go about exploring these caves. It’s definitely one of the most adventurous Diglipur places to see, and highly recommended in this Diglipur travel guide as well!

After the sweaty business of hiking up to the caves, you can consider taking a swim in the pristine waters of Ramnagar Beach as well. The beach has gazebos where you can sit under a shade, and also changing rooms and toilets for both men and women. It’s a very well-maintained beach, one that is seldom visited by tourists. This Diglipur travel guide recommends definitely putting this on your list as well!

Saddle Peak National Park

At 732 meters above sea level, Saddle Peak is the highest peak of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Being the hiking enthusiast that I am, ever since I heard about this mountain, I set my heart to go up to it. Throughout my journey, I heard various rumours about how Saddle Peak has been closed off for so and so reasons but all these rumours were put to rest when I reached Pristine Beach Resort and was reassured by Mr Alex that the hike to the mountain is, in fact, open.

First things first, the best way to access Saddle Peak is by going on a guided trek. Check out this Saddle Peak National Park Hike Tour recommended by this Diglipur Island Andaman travel guide.

The Saddle Peak trek starts from Lamiya Bay Beach which is just about 4 kilometres away from Pristine Beach and is also the last bus stop on the stretch. Once you reach Lamiya Bay, you must register with the Forest Office and pay an entry fee of INR 50 since it is a national park area. Saddle Peak is also the originating point for River Kalpong – the only river of the Andaman Islands. So during the Saddle Peak trek, as you near the base of the mountain before the incline begins, you come across five freshwater crossings which are your only water sources for the entire hike – an important tip to remember from this Diglipur travel guide.

I started the Saddle Peak trek at 6 am. To climb all the way to the top and then come back down, took me a total of 11.5 hours! The entire stretch is about 8 kilometres long – of which 3 kilometres is a plain walk through a beautiful padauk forest. The rest of the 5 kilometres is a steep incline up the mountain. The humid rainforest adds to your exhaustion. Here’s a tip from this Diglipur travel guide – make sure to carry enough water and some snack like bananas, biscuits, packed sandwiches and juice boxes for the way. The trail is well marked with blue signboards that were installed by Mr Alex along with the Forest rangers. It’s definitely a task, but this Diglipur places to see is definitely well worth it!

At the top, there once used to be a wooden constructed viewpoint you could climb up but by the time I visited, it was washed down during the cyclone. However, I was told that they’re now building an iron viewpoint so hopefully, by the time you go decide to go, it should’ve been constructed! All I could see was overgrown bushes and through them, a beautiful view of Lamia Bay, Kalipur Beach and Craggey Island on one side and Mayabunder and Rangat on the other. Needless to say, Saddle Peak is definitely one of the best places to visit in Diglipur Andaman.

Ross and Smith Islands

The Ross and Smith Islands are a pair of “twin islands” that are adjoined by a sand bar in between. During the high tide, this sand bar remains submerged in water but during low tide, it appears and you can walk all the way. Of the two, Ross is uninhabited whereas Smith has a small population living on the other side which is called “Sagar Dweep”. Ross and Smith is probably the best Diglipur beach there is as the waters here are exceptionally clear and it is a great place for swimming.

To get to Ross and Smith, you must hire a boat from the Aerial Bay Jetty. Unfortunately, the tickets are not per person, but instead per boat. Each boat costs INR 5,000 so if you’re a solo traveller – it could come out to be quite expensive. The twenty-minute boat ride is a great journey with a view of Saddle Peak in the distance. As of yet, tourists are not allowed to spend the night at Ross and Smith but the government is planning some tourism infrastructure at Smith Island in the upcoming years. So hopefully spending a night at Ross and Smith would be possible soon! Trust this Diglipur travel guide, Ross and Smith Islands are some of the most beautiful Diglipur places to visit!

Craggey Island

If I had to pick, I’d say of all the places to visit in Diglipur Andaman, Craggey Island was my absolute favourite. This tiny island is located just a few hundred meters off Kalipur Beach. I know several people who have also swum this distance but unfortunately, I could not because of strong winds and choppy waters. Mr Alex helped us arrange a fisherman dinghy that took us to the Island and this is where I went snorkelling for the very first time in my life. I had no fins or snorkel, just a mask to help me see the world underwater but trust me, it was one of the most magical and unforgettable experiences I’ve ever had. The visibility is fantastic and the coral gardens are massive and so rich. I saw a whole lot of fish, a cleaning station and a lobster before we surfaced and hopped back on the boat. If you take up one piece of advice from this Diglipur travel guide, let it be this – absolutely do not miss a chance to visit Craggey on your Diglipur tour itinerary!

Shyam Nagar Mud Volcanoes

Similar to the mud volcanoes at Baratang, the Shyam Nagar mud volcanoes are a fascinating geological phenomenon. However, I ended up not visiting this place during my time in Diglipur but I hear it is worth mentioning on this Diglipur travel guide. Shyam Nagar is located about 40 kilometres from Diglipur and after walking a little bit, you reach an area where the grey mud bubbles up as the gases trapped below the surface try to escape through the soil. It’s quite a sight to behold, definitely one of the most fascinating places to visit in Diglipur Andaman!

Diglipur Travel Guide – General Information

Internet and network connectivity in diglipur island.

You can count on almost no mobile and internet connectivity in most of Diglipur. In Diglipur town, you get decent 4G speed for both BSNL and Airtel. Areas away from the town will have no Airtel connectivity and a limited, patchy network for BSNL. However, Pristine Beach Resort has good WiFi – as has already been mentioned in this Diglipur travel guide.

ATMs in Diglipur Island

There are several ATMs in Diglipur town but it’s difficult to find ATMs in the villages around Diglipur. It’s recommended that you keep enough cash on you as most places do not take online payments – apart from Pristine Beach Resort.

Wine and Beer Shop in Diglipur Island

There is one ANNIDCO wine and beer shop in Diglipur town and that’s about it. This Diglipur travel guide recommends that you stock up here beforehand itself. Alternatively, there is an in-house bar at Pristine Beach Resort which you could avail.

Language in Diglipur Island

Hindi is widely spoken and understood in all of Diglipur. English can be communicated fairly easily as well – though not everywhere. So you don’t have to worry about language barriers in Diglipur.

Diglipur Island Market and Bazar

The Diglipur bazar is very well stocked for all basic needs so you don’t have to worry about this at all. Disglipur bazar also has several sweet shops, samosa shacks and small dhabas selling basic food like idli, vada, dosa etc. Even in the villages shops selling basic goods like chips, biscuits, cigarettes etc can be found easily as per this Diglipur travel guide.

Diglipur is an appealing blend of fresh natural beauty and small-town life, with many attractions for tourists.  At approximately 300 kms. from Port Blair, it is quite a distance from the other tourist hubs of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Saddle Peak

Take a local bus from the Diglipur Bazaar and visit Kalipur Beach. With unusual volcanic grey sand and crystal clear water, this beach is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Though you should watch out for jellyfish which are found in abundance here. Kalipur is special because it is one of the few beaches in the world where four species of sea turtles - Olive Ridley, Leather Back, Hawksbill and Green turtles - come to nest their eggs. A hatchery has been constructed on the beach for the turtles, so if you’re lucky, you may even see the endearing sight of baby turtles making their way into the sea.

Craggy Island

A 20 minute swim away from Kalipur beach is tiny Craggy Island, with vibrant coral reefs that are home to a range of colourful fish and sea creatures. However, you should take note of the tide timings before you go snorkelling in the fascinating underwater world around the Island.

Alfred Caves

This mysterious complex of 41 limestone caves is nature’s gift to Diglipur. Located near the Ramnagar beach, these caves are reputed to undergo a chemical reaction and change their shape during the monsoons. The best part about seaways is that one can even book convenient overnight sails, which makes traveling effortless. Tickets or the government ship can only be booked at the administration block or the Phoenix Bay office.

The majority of people prefer airways over other transportation facilities because they not only reduce traveling time but also provide an unmatchable service and comfort. According to the Andaman tourist website, one can travel from Port Blair to Diglipur via airplanes and seaplanes. But this is not true. One cannot reach Diglipur via seaplane because they are no longer functioning. Although helicopter facilities are available, they are only made for medical emergencies. It remains full all the time. However, a tourist can book an extra seat available for around INR 5000 Per person. But they are very rare to find, therefore it would be better to not consider the airways for traveling to Diglipur.

One can easily reach Diglipur via roadways by crossing the Jarawa tribe area and creeks on the way. But this is not the much preferable option because the journey may become exhausting as it takes up to 12 hours to reach Diglipur from Port Blair. However, if you have decided to travel by road, then there are plenty of options available that you should know about.

Government buses

The government of Andaman and Nicobar offers bus services from Port Blair to Diglipur at different times. One can select the timing according to their convenience and comfort. However, the preferred time that the majority of tourists choose is 4:30 AM. Government buses are a bit fast and take up to 10 hours to reach Diglipur from Port Blair.

Remember, the government bus will only transfer you to the bus stand of Diglipur via Andaman Grand Trunk Road, you need to hire public transport from the bus stand to go sightseeing and reach your accommodation.

Unfortunately, these buses do not offer Air-conditioning, which is the biggest reason why tourists do not prefer the government buses. You need not book the bus tickets in advance as you can easily get them from Government Bus Depot, Blair.

The private bus sector is known for its services and facilities that you can’t expect from government buses. In the private sector, both buses with or without air-conditioners are available. While normally I wouldn't trust a non-local for suggestions on how to spend your time in the city, the Times does a better job on these articles than most publications, detailing the best ways to spend a day-and-a-half in a city, and their recommendations for Toronto are actually not bad.

Here's everywhere New York Times writer Ingrid K. Williams  recommended you visit while in Toronto (even if you live here).

Detailing the best-of-the-best, the most-un-skippable of all Toronto experiences, Williams suggests exploring Trillium Park (even though part of it is fenced off ), eating at Kensington Market's Sunny's Chinese , visiting MOCA  in the Junction Triangle and grabbing a drink at Crybaby Gallery  near Dundas and Dufferin.

Attractions

Once you've exhausted the key stops, Williams suggests Massey Hall , Evergreen Brick Works , the Gardiner Museum , UofT's Philosopher's Walk, the Bata Shoe Museum , the Beach (as in, the neighbourhood), the McMichael and Zaal Art Gallery as must-see attractions.

Restaurants

Choosing a small selection of restaurants to be decreed as the "best" is kind of like picking a star in the sky and calling it the most beautiful. While not wholly wrong, it's also not entirely right.

In any event, Williams' list of Toronto's must-visit restaurants and food spots includes Patois , Bad Attitude Bread , Milky's Coffee , Taverne Bernhardt's , Bowie , Bathurst Local and White Lily Diner .

A smaller selection of small businesses made it onto the list (presumably because NYT readers will be busy visiting all those museums), but leading the charge are Easy Tiger Goods , Issues Magazine Shop and Etc Home .

If you're looking for more recommendations, I suggest Tusk for trendy womenswear, The Apartment Life for vintage decor and furniture and Acadia Art & Rare Books — a favourite of Guillermo del Toro's .

Williams also recommends a selection of hotels to stay at, like the Ace Hotel , the Drake Hotel , Ode or finding a vacation rental — specifically in or around Trinity Bellwoods.

After this week's Arizona Supreme Court decision restoring a Civil War-era near-total abortion ban, President Biden said that if Donald Trump becomes president again, other freedoms may be in danger.
