Ski Magazine wants to offer you and your family a dream vacation! Imagine carving turns down a pristine mountain, enjoying a relaxing soak in an alpine hot tub, and curling up with loved ones in front of a crackling fireplace. This is your chance to make memories you’ll treasure for a lifetime.  Ready to enter?  Here’s how:

Just tell us in 100 words or less why you deserve a relaxing family vacation in the mountains, and you could win a four-day trip to Smugglers’ Notch, Vt., Steamboat, Colo. , or Northstar at Tahoe, Calif. —complete with airfare and accommodations for two adults and two children (children must be under age 18), and ski lessons or daycare for the kids.

Enter as often as you like, up to once per day from now till January 21. Just be sure each entry includes a new, creative and convincing reason why you should be one of the lucky families to win. We’ll post the funniest and most inspiring answers on the SKI Web site throughout the contest, so check back frequently to see if your writing has been featured.

Entries will close on January 21, 2010, and then it’s time to vote. The editors of SKI Magazine will narrow the entries to their top 25 choices. It’s your job to come back to the site daily (and encourage your friends and family to do the same) to vote for your favorite entries. We can send you email reminders if you like, so you don’t forget. The three entries with the most votes on the day the contest closes (February 1, 2010) will each be awarded one of the family ski vacations.

Men’s 2023/24 Alpine FIS World Cup calendar

At Sports for Winter, we rejoice in the snowfields and in winter sports. Snowboarders, skiers and snow sports enthusiasts—we are a passionate alliance of joyous winters!

The FIS has published the calendar for men's 2023/24 Audi FIS Alpine World Cup.

The men's super-G and downhill races at Lake Louise are yet to be confirmed (TBC). These races could take place on November 25th or 26th. Alpine Canada Alpin is known in the ski racing community for its tireless search for financial solutions for hosting a men’s speed series. The ski racing community hopes to hear a decision and see their success soon. Canada appears to be asking for government assistance. We will likely not know the outcome of the races before the Alberta Provincial Elections on May 27th.

2023-24 Stifel Alpine World Cups to be held in the US

Seven men's World Cup events will take place in the US. Two men's December downhills will be held in Beaver Creek, Colorado. A super-G race is also scheduled. The tech skiers are returning to Palisades-Tahoe in the spring of 2024 for a Stifel GS/SL event that will take place at the end of February. Last year, the men's Speed Event Tour returned to North America in early March for races in Aspen. This season, the Colorado Stifel races March will be giant and slalom. It will be thrilling to see seven men's World Cups on US soil, including three speed and four technical. The FIS's schedule for 2023-24 shows how important it is to grow the US market.

New World Cup Host

It is an important and welcomed addition that the men's slalom will be held in Gurgl on November 9th. It will be the very first World Cup slalom for men since the Levi races of November 2019. Gurgl is also hosting its first World Cup. The races will take place a week following the Zermatt - Cervinia downhills.

Team Combined to debut at Kitzbuhel

The team combined race, which will take place on January 19, is a new and exciting addition to both the sport and season. The test event held at the Junior Worlds in St Anton 2023 was a success. Kitzbuhel will be the first World Cup to introduce the event. Each team will have a downhill speed skier and a slalom tech skier. The teams will race the slalom according to reverse order of finish. The team member who is the fastest in downhill skiing will be able to see their slalom skier run 30th.

The regular season race in Norway

The regular World Cup Speed season will also end once again in Kvitfjell (Norway) on the 18th February. The 25 best speed skiers, who do not also ski tech, will get a break of over a whole month before the Saalbach Finals.

Tech Skiers in Spring

The tech skier, however, will have an extremely busy final season. They have 12 days to prepare for Palisades, and then a week after that, they will race SL and GS at Aspen in Colorado. They then have tech races in Kranjska Gora Slovenia a week after. Then, less than one week later, they race at the World Cup Finals in Saalbach (Austria) - a completely different program from the speed event athletes.

What are the differences between snow skiing and snowboarding.

Alpine skiing and Nordic ski are the two main types of snowskiing. Nordic skiing is done on more gentle terrain. Alpine skiing is performed on steep, downhill slopes. Both require different techniques.

If you are interested in learning how to snowski, first buy new equipment. You will need to have skis, poles, or boots. You can expect a range of prices depending on which type you purchase.

You should next attend a class in a local ski area. You can choose from many different classes, such as those that teach you how the equipment works, how to ride a chairlift, or even how to ski backwards.

Afterward, you'll practice skiing at your own pace. Take breaks throughout the activity. When you are ready, you may try your skills out on a nearby mountain.

Because it is windproof and waterproof, Gortex fabric is often used for jackets and pants for skiing or snowboarding. It is also very breathable and will keep you comfortable, even when you sweat. Gortex is extremely durable, so it can withstand many years of wear and tear.

How do I choose the right size ski?

This question is not definitive. The best ski size for you will depend upon your height, weight and skiing ability. Here are some general guidelines to help you choose a size ski.

Skis that are shorter than your height are recommended for beginners. As you get more experienced, you will be able to purchase skis that are either shorter or slightly longer.

Your weight is also important in selecting the right size ski. The longer skis will work better for heavier skiers. However, shorter skiers may be able to do as well with shorter skis.

Finally, your skiing ability will also impact the size of ski you should purchase. Beginners and skiers with less experience will probably prefer shorter skis. More advanced skiers can manage longer skis.

It is always a good idea to speak with a ski professional before making a purchase. They can help determine the size ski that is best for you.

Where can you find snow water in ski resorts?

At most ski areas, the average annual precipitation is less than 30 inches. However, ski resorts often have access to large bodies freshwater from glacial melting runoff which they use to make artificial winter snow.

They sometimes also use recycled water from restaurants and hotels. This cuts down on the cost of chemicals and helps to keep them out of debt.

Some of the freshwater sources for ski resorts include:

• Groundwater wells
• Surface water from rivers, streams, and lakes
• Hotel and restaurant wastewater can be recycled

How do you turn skis on and off?

Before turning on skis, ensure that your ski bindings are correctly adjusted for your boots. Once you have the ski bindings set, put on your skis and poles. Push off with your poles to move forward. You can use your poles as a lever to guide your turn. You can also use your poles to help stop by planting them in the snow and using them as brakes. Always ski in control and be aware of other skiers around you.

As you put on your skis, remember the words balance, coordination and control.

Balance is distributing your weight evenly between your feet (skis) and your legs. Coordination is about keeping track where each footstep is placed and ensuring your body moves smoothly. Control is knowing which muscles you should use to turn and steer. Confidence means that you believe you can perform complex maneuvers.

These basic techniques will make you feel more confident on the slopes. Practice will improve your technique, making you a more proficient skier.

How long does a ski resort take to make snow.

Ski resorts can make snow in between 12 and 24 hours depending on the weather conditions. Ski resorts have a variety of methods for making snow. They use machines that pump out water, compress it into snow, or use pipes and fans which blow cold air onto their slopes. Making snow is an essential part of the operation of a ski resort. Ski resorts often make snow before the winter season begins to prepare for it.

The rules of the competition and how to enter are as follows:

• You must answer a question and enter your details within the competition form on the Inghams website for your chance to win.
• Prize is as follows:
• One main holiday prize which includes: A 7 night ski holiday for 2 people in the 4* Alpenhotel Kramerwirt, Mayrhofen on a half board basis, with charter flights and transfers. Charter flights are included from a limited range of regional airports and are subject to availability. Supplements for other flight routes or types will apply. Date restrictions also apply, and the holiday must be taken between 1 December 2023 and 30 April 2024, excluding Christmas, New Year and Half Term departure dates. Dates are subject to availability. The competition prize is not transferable. Prize is subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice.
• Monthly prize: One EcoSki Voucher to the value of £50. One voucher per month from October 2022 to April 2023. Seven £50 vouchers in total. The competition prize is not transferable.
• The winner of the main holiday prize and monthly prizes will be contacted via email. Inghams accepts no responsibility if the winner cannot be contacted or does not claim the prize within 7 days of notification. We reserve the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner.
• The holiday prize winner must confirm their dates of travel with Inghams before 30 September 2023 so Inghams may ensure availability and confirm the booking of the prize.
• Inghams’ decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
• The winner agrees to the use of his/her name and image in any publicity material around the competition, as well as their entry. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current UK data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.
• Inghams shall have the right, at its sole discretion and at any time, to change or modify these terms and conditions. Such change shall be effective immediately upon posting to this webpage.
• Inghams accepts no responsibility for any damage, loss, liabilities, injury or disappointment incurred or suffered by you as a result of entering the competition or accepting the prize. Inghams further disclaims liability for any injury or damage to you or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from participation in or downloading any materials in connection with the competition.
• Inghams reserves the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, this competition with or without prior notice due to reasons outside its control (including, without limitation, in the case or anticipation of, suspected or actual fraud). The decision of Inghams in all matters under its control is final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into.
• Inghams shall not be liable for any failure to comply with its obligations where the failure is caused by something outside of its reasonable control. Such circumstances shall include, but not be limited to, weather conditions, fire, flood, hurricane, strike, industrial dispute, war, hostilities, political unrest, riots, civil commotion, inevitable accidents, supervening legislation or any other circumstances amounting to force majeure.

What draws your heart to Korea? Whether it’s a meaningful encounter, cherished moments with wonderful friends, or if memories of Korea stir emotions within you, please share your story and take part in the Visit Korea Year 2023-2024 .

In celebration of “Visit Korea Year 2023-2024”, The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism along with the Korea Tourism Organization are offering a trip to Korea for those deeply connected to the country.

• Personal stories, memories or connections to Korea. Include photos and videos to increase your chance of winning.
• “KOREA invites U” 5-day Korea Tour. Travel Period: May 20 – 24, 2024.
• One day compulsory tour & three days personalized tour package.
• Round trip tickets to Korea and travel expenses (4 nights accommodation, travel insurance, etc.).
• Mandatory joint tour (May 21, 1 day).
• Personalized tour package (3 days).
• One additional person can be supported, provided they are related to the story, or are a minor, elderly or have disabilities.

Eligibility

• Open to non-Korean nationals residing outside of Korea (Korean citizens and residents are ineligible).
• Individuals with special connections to Korea.
• Available from May 20 – May 24, 2024, for a trip to Korea (Check for passport validity, entry restrictions, etc., before applying).
• Both self-applications and recommendations are accepted.
