Forgotten Trek

Designing the Starship Voyager

Development of the fourth Star Trek series started in the middle of 1993, during the last season of The Next Generation and the second season of Deep Space Nine . Executive Producer Jeri Taylor decided as early as August that the new ship should be sleeker and smaller than the Enterprise -D.

Rick Sternbach, who was then working as an illustrator and tech consultant on The Next Generation , was brought on board the following month. He wasted no time getting the design process started.

It was the first lead ship Sternbach designed. He had been responsible for various alien ships and shuttlecraft on The Next Generation , including the runabout, but his predecessor, Andrew Probert, had created the Enterprise -D.

Sternbach’s early sketches of Voyager show a streamlined vessel with a dart-like primary hull and a flattened, elongated engineering section, sporting swept-back runabout-like warp pylons.

Voyager concept art

Pieces were added and subtracted and hull contours, both gently curved and angular, were explored in perspective over the course of weeks and months. Hull cross sections were drawn in blue pencil to check internal deck heights, total number of decks and overall ship length. Sternbach prepared comparisons with familiar Starfleet vessels to help the producers decide.

They added to his challenge by deciding Voyager should be able to land on a planetary surface. That meant the ship needed deployable landing gear.

By the spring of 1994, something resembling the Voyager we know had emerged. The slightly angular dart front had been smoothed off and nestled into the engineering section — still assuming a separation capability — and sweeping pylons ended in a set of long nacelles. The nacelles had doors to open up the warp coils for some kind of new energy jump. Impulse thrusters were buried underneath, similar to the runabout, and a large triangular wedge sat atop the ship, possibly acting as a scout craft or long-range sensor array.

Voyager concept art

Notable details included a large forward sensor cutout and a stepped engineering hull that supported a ring of large cargo bays and impulse engines. The former would stay, the latter was eliminated.

Fast-looking ship

This was a fast-looking ship, with a hint of solid engine hardware showing on the outside.

When the producers signed off, Sternbach proceeded to the initial blueprint and study-model stages. He scaled up a top plan view of the ship to a length of 48 inches, the presumed size of the motion-control model. From this, he derived bottom, side, fore and aft views. The side elevation and resulting cutaway suggested that the ship would be about 1,000 feet long, the same size as Kirk’s Enterprise .

Voyager cutaway

Following the Starfleet tradition, Sternbach reserved space for the bridge on Deck 1 and a variety of placeholder windows on the hull, which would be built into standing sets.

Windows are an important design factor, because of the coordination needed between the studio and outside model makers for continuity between the exterior and interior of the ship. Since Voyager would be smaller than the Enterprise -D, the windows would be proportionately larger and more visible on the television screen. That made it even more important that they matched the sets.

Just as Sternbach was about to produce a final set of blueprints for the model makers (he had even produced a small mock-up model himself), Taylor came back and asked if he could not make Voyager a little curvier after all.

Saucer separation was no longer necessary. This allowed Sternbach to integrate the primary and secondary hulls more smoothly.

Voyager concept art

Sternbach continued to play with the nacelle placement. Should they be on pylons, like on the Enterprise -D? Or downturned, like a runabout? Early in July, the final nacelle movements were completed with the 45-degree wing-up angle being approved by the producers.

Building the miniature

Sternbach drew up five orthographic projections of the final version: top, bottom, starboard, forward and aft elevations. These went to the model builders in August: Tony Meininger’s Brazil Fabrication. They also received detailed sketches from Sternbach as to intended function, color or whether a lighting effect was required.

Voyager thruster concept art

Two months later, Meininger delivered the model to Image G for shooting, although some modifications and detailing continued until December.

Voyager came on the air at a time when huge advancements were being made in computer-generated imagery (CGI). Over the course of the first few seasons, models were phased out and digitally-created starships entered service. By Season 4, in 1997, Meininger’s studio model had become obsolete. It was sold off at auction in 2006 to an Englishman for $110,000.

Stock footage of the model continued to be used. You can tell the two versions apart from the windows underneath the shuttlebay. The windows are lighted in the CGI model. There was no room to install electrical wiring in the physical miniature, who whenever those windows are dark, you know you’re looking at the real thing.

Thank you for this cool online resource! The Eaglemoss Designing Starships volumes 1 and 2 have 50-75 percent of the drawings featured on the site, when the topics align, but it’s that last 25-50 percent that’s really special. Seeing rough versions, or extra angles, or so forth, is very rewarding for me. I understand that there’s only so much space in a paper book, but that’s what makes the digital delivery medium interesting! Plus, you have lots of concept art for sets, while the hardback collections I have focus almost entirely on the ship models. Any set details are incidental, when they were referenced in the ship blueprints (like some of the deck detailing on the Voyager cutaways here).

The USS Voyager NCC-74656 was one of the four of its kind made with newly advanced technology that makes it so advanced from the other previous Starships. Its length measures 344 metres and its width is 130 metres wide. The Voyager is an Intrepid-class Starship. This ship can hold two hundred crew membersthough only one hundred and fifty four crew members were recruited when it was first sent into the Badlands to find the Maquis. The crew complement however, was somewhat reduced throughout its journey in the Delta Quadrant due to frequent encounters with hostile aliens or anomalies. To compensate, new recruits were added to the positions needing fulfilling.

There are fifteen decks on the VoyagerDeck One being the top of the saucer and Deck Fifteen being the lowest deck. The Bridge, the center of all operations, is on Deck One. The main source of power to the ship's systems is located on Decks Ten and Eleven being Main Engineering.

Intrepid-class ships are new classes of Starships with advanced technology. It costs relatively less than a Galaxy-class ship. It was built to defend against the Cardassians, Maquis, and the Borg, where the starship is highly maneuverable and was designed for tactical missions.

Some of its features are its bioneural gel packs, systems to increase isolinear processors, variable geometry warp nacelles which allows high-warp flight, and an Emergency Medical Hologram which is also installed into this class to handle health of the crew in emergency situations when the resident Doctor is not available. The EMH has become the ship's main medical personnel when the Voyager's original doctor was killed in action during their encounter with the Caretaker when they first entered the Delta Quadrant.

One feature that other Intrepid-class ships do not have is the (ten times more accurate) advanced Astrometrics Laboratory. The technological advancement to the ship with Borg technology was added during the alliance between the Borg and the crew of Voyager in 2374, stardate 51003.7.

As advanced as the intrepid-class is there are two minor offsets with the ships: they are not designed for families and the replicators are not the most reliable.

But like all Starships, the Voyager includes a set of structural and operation systemsSelf-destruct and warp-core ejection, escape pods, jefferies tube network, bussard ramscoops, reaction control systems, docking bays, and fluid handling systems.

The U.S.S Voyager NCC-74656 is an Intrepid-class starship. As is the case with all Starfleet ships, the bridge is on Deck 1, at the top of the command saucer. On the bridge, the captain and her senior officers acquire instrument and sensor data, control command functions, access the main computer, analyze situations, and take any action that seems proper. The bridge is the brain of the ship.

The bridge area is decorated in tones of silver, gray, and chrome. Control surfaces are black, with the usual array of colored pads arranged into a keyboard. Because the sophisticated onboard computer is capable of determining and executing all routine operations, trained crew members are able to control the ship with a minimum of keystrokes. From the main sensor cluster on the forward hull to the tiny markings on the escape pod hatches scattered around the  Intrepid -class ship, nearly every square inch of the XL  Voyager is filled with familiar Starfleet design elements.

The ship has some serious heft to it, as well: the upper surface of the hull, trailing back to the deck of the hanger runway is all comprised of Eaglemoss’ signature die-cast metal.

While certain textural details are softer than comparable renders in the underside’s injected-plastic components, areas like the bridge module and aft torpedo launchers still pack a visual punch.

I’ve sung a lot of this new  Voyager  model’s praises, and well deserved — but like the previous  XL Starships releases, this ship isn’t perfect. Like our primary criticism of the  Enterprise NX-01 model , the plastic stand that comes with  Voyager is really not as supportive as it needs to be for a model this front-heavy.

The V-shaped grip really needs to have some longer lower-rung supports to hold this ship securely; the center of gravity on the XL  Voyager is about an inch ahead of where the stand ends and the ship slides off its perch quite easily. (I ended up adding a bit of friction tape to the stand to keep it from falling quite so easily.)

In addition, the familiar window-alignment issue returns once more to detract from the  Voyager model’s overall presentation. As asked back when the  Enterprise -D model faced similar paint alignment problems, why does Eaglemoss still include window divots in their tooling if the paint isn’t going to be even close to the target?

Honestly, while the window issue is as annoying as ever, it’s really the only thing we take issue with on the XL  Voyager  model. For the price, it’s something that we’d love to see corrected, but at this point it’s almost become a staple of the Eaglemoss starships.

Overall, though, this model is such a step up in detail and presentation from the original that it may just be our favorite of the  XL Starships line to date. I just wish we could flip up the nacelles to their at-warp position to really make the ship come to life!

The ship also includes the standard  Official Starships Collection magazine, this time focusing on the development and casting of  Star Trek: Voyager rather than duplicating the starship technical details found in the original  Voyager model magazine.

USS Voyager

uss voyager specs

A legend on par with the USS Enterprise, the USS Voyager embodies the phrase “Where no man has gone before.” Shortly after its launch, the USS Voyager was cast over 70,000 light years away from home into the Delta Quadrant, unwillingly becoming the first Federation vessel to successfully traverse the Delta Quadrant and make numerous first contacts. During its seven-year journey, this ship became more than a research vessel - it became a home for its diverse and skilled crew. Apart from the emotional value, the USS Voyager is one of the most technologically advanced ships in the Federation fleet, including the upgraded sensor equipment and the capability of reaching a cruise velocity of warp factor 9.975, making it one of the most suitable ships for the exploration of the Galaxy.

Embark on a thrilling adventure, collect Artifacts, and uncover the hidden wonders of the Delta Quadrant by building the USS Voyager. Let your journey unfold as you delve into uncharted territories and rise as a legendary explorer.

How can you add the USS Voyager to your fleet?

To acquire blueprints for the USS Voyager, you need to reach Operations Level 30 and defeat Hirogen hostiles in the Delta Quadrant. Collect Hirogen Relics as spoils of victory, and refine them in the Voyager refinery. Once you reach Operations Level 34 and have gathered all the blueprints, you can build the USS Voyager.

The USS Voyager enables you to acquire Isolytic damage Artifacts and ship parts for various vessels, including the Cerritos, Amalgam, G4 ships, and more.

Advanced Sensors (active) uncover hidden hostiles in the Delta Quadrant, such as the elusive Species 8472. This state has a cost, Deuterium Canister, duration, and cooldown.

Astometrics Scan (active) scans a player's ship and reveals the location of their station. This state has a cost, Deuterium Canister, duration, and cooldown.

Deuterium Canister can be found after refining Hirogen Relics in the USS Voyager Refinery. Hirogen Relics can be found in the Delta Quadrant systems on Hirogen Hostiles.

How to upgrade it?

To upgrade the USS Voyager, you need to refine Exotic Biotoxins and Anomaly Samples . These valuable materials need to be refined in the Voyager refinery, harnessing their true power to enhance the starship's capabilities.

Exotic Biotoxins can be acquired from Species 8472 Bioships in the Velixys system, while Anomaly samples can be mined from systems such as FSEP-505, FSEP-3819, FSEP-247, and FSEP-001.

Important note : Species 8472 Bioships are elusive and can only be spotted while using Advanced Sensors.

USS Voyager research nodes will further enhance not only the ship itself but also provide fleetwide buffs. From the Below Deck Assembly (unlocks Below Deck slots in officer presets), to the Artifact Hunting Extraordinaire (adds a bonus roll of Artifact rewards in the common and rare Anomaly Sample refinery), Dismantle Tinkering (increases base scrapping speed for all ships), and Ship Maintenance Efficiency (increases the base cost efficiency for repairing all ships); these nodes are an invaluable addition to your buffs.

Command center

Conn positie.

The operations station, or ops, is behind the command area and to its left. Ops reads sensors, accesses the ship’s library, allocates ship’s power and computer time, and coordinates the activities of the ship’s departments. On Intrepid-class ships, conn and ops are located in different areas of the bridge; on most Starfleet vessels, these two stations operate as a pair side by side, directly in front of the command area.

Tactical Station

The tactical station is to the right of the command area. Lt Commander Tuvok, the tacitical officer, is responsible for all ship’s security, weapons, offensive and defensive maneuvers. On Galaxy-class starships, the tactical officer stands at the tactical rail directly behind the captain, but on Voyager this duty station is much more self-contained and has the added benefit of a seat-no doubt welcome addition to the bridge design and layout.

De perimeter stations

Starting at the viewscreen and moving clockwise around the perimeter of the bridge, the first station is engineering. From here, Lt. B’Elanna Torres, Voyager’s Chief Engineer, may monitor and control many of ship’s engineering functions. The presence of the chief engineer on the bridge may be necessary during delicate combat, technical, or diplomatic situations. As on other ships, all engineering functions can be controlled from the bridge if necessary, ensuring that Main Engineering is not placed at any disadvantage when the chief engineer’s presence is required on the bridge.Next to the engineering station is a red alert flasher on the wall, followed by the door to the captain’s ready room. Continuing clockwise, one comes to the tactical station, a self contained area in which a chair is contained behind a low desk unit, the top of which is covered with consoles, as is the wall behind. The chair, sandwiched between the wall and the desk, can face in either direction, giving a clear line of sight to the viewscreen when necessary.

Moving on from tactical, one climbs three small steps to come to the raised area behind the command chairs. Just to the left of tactical, at the top of the steps, is the door to the turbolift. This gives access between the bridge and the rest of the ship.

Along the entire back wall of the bridge, behind the command area, are a number of consoles, schematics and display screens, split into three distinct areas. The middle area of the three is taken up by a large schematic of the ship, and is also the bridge’s secondary engineering station. The schematic is flanked by two mission ops consoles, instruments, and readouts. There are no chairs at these consoles, and duty officers working here are required to stand.

From the center of the schematic, the left hand side of the bridge is virtually a mirror image of the right. The layout is identical, but the function of some of the stations varies. Across the room from tactical is the ops station, which again is self contained and has its own chair. On Voyager, this station is usually manned by Ensign Harry Kim. From ops, the steps move down again to the lower front level of the bridge, leading to the door to the briefing room, where the command crew meets for important discussions and to make decisions. On the wall next to this door is another Red Alert flasher, and, finally a science station. This science station is not always manned and is primarily used when ops needs the support of supplementary sensor readings or library research. Following the entire perimeter of the bridge, this brings one back to the main viewscreen

Briefing Room

The Briefing Room is where Captain Kathryn Janeway gathers her senior crew to discuss about ship’s missions, important matters, and any other issues needing to be discussed. It is a place where the captain can give out orders to her senior crew to give out to their people in their department. The Briefing Room is also used to inform the crew of any new information that has come in during a mission. Meetings held here are also not just to give out orders or give out new information by the captain but to also get some feedback on the current mission from each department and to report anything that has not been reported to the captain yet. Here the captain and the senior crew gather knowledge. Usually the duration of these meetings in the Briefing Room aren’t long.

Kathryn Janeway% 2C 2371.jpg

" There are three things to remember about being a starship captain: keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship, and never abandon a member of your crew. "

Kathryn Janeway was a 24th century Star Fleet officer, most noted for her service as Captain of the starship USS Voyager . She became the first Federation captain to successfully travel to the Delta Quadrant , encountering dozens of new planets and civilizations. While there, she and her crew also survived numerous encounters with the Borg .

Janeway was well-known for her addiction to coffee . She refused to go a day without a cup of coffee and preferred it completely black, without milk or sugar. Janeway once tried to give up coffee, unsuccessfully. Once, Neelix tried to get her to use Voyager 's food reserves instead of her replicator rations by giving her his "Even better than coffee substitute". Grudgingly, Janeway agreed to try it, but was relieved when the bridge called her just before Neelix was finished pouring it. In an alternate timeline, Janeway gave up coffee in favor of tea later in life.

From 2365 onward, Janeway and Tuvok became close friends, and Janeway found she could always "rely on his insightful and unfailingly logical advice". Tuvok was one of her most trusted friends and advisers, and she discussed all command decisions with him. When Voyager was first stranded in the Delta Quadrant, Janeway met with Maquis cell leader Chakotay. After the Maquis ship was destroyed, Chakotay and Janeway became reluctant allies in the attempt to find missing crewmembers and return to the Alpha Quadrant. Their complicated relationship began first as enemies, then as reluctant ship mates, forming into possible romantic interests, and settling with best friends. Chakotay became Voyager's First Officer , and Janeway relied on Chakotay's innovative tactics in battles, integrating many Maquis techniques.

Executive Officer (XO) - Commander Chakotay

Chakotay% 2C 2377.jpg

In 2371 , while Star Fleet was trying to capture him in the Badlands , he and his Maquis crew were pulled into the Delta Quadrant and forced to merge with the crew of the Voyager during its journey towards home . Before serving as Voyager' s first officer, he had resigned Star Fleet after years of service in order to join the Maquis to defend his home colony .

Being of Mayan and Native American descent, Chakotay's tribe - mainly because of the intrusion of more technological societies - left Earth hundreds of years ago to find their own home on another planet near the Cardassian border. His father tried to impart his values on Chakotay in many ways, such as taking him to hikes to nearby forested worlds of their ancestors. When his father died, he resigned from Star Fleet to join the Maquis and defend his home colony, continuing the fight in his father's name. He also took the mark, his face tattoo, in order to honor the memory of his father and to signify his Native American heritage.

One of the many reasons he joined Star Fleet was to pursue his interests in anthropology and paleontology. He was fascinated by 20th century Earth, and the early history of space exploration. Since his time at Star Fleet Academy, Chakotay was a fan of boxing. While there, the legendary Boothby helped him train. He occasionally ran a program on the holodeck where he would box a Terrellian with Boothby's assistance. He also said that "boxing helped him relax."

Aboard the Maquis ship Val Jean , Chakotay was close with many of his crew. B'Elanna Torres was Chakotay's engineer and unofficial first officer, and he endorsed her becoming Voyager's Chief Engineer . They had a close, almost sibling-like relationship, though she did not chose him to be her child's godfather because she believed he didn't really know about raising children. (She and Tom chose The Doctor instead.)

Chief Tactical Officer / Chief of Security - Lieutenant Commander Tuvok

Tuvok 2371.jpg

As a teenager, Tuvok rebelled against the Vulcan ideal of logic and reasoning when he fell in love with a Terrellian girl named Jara, the daughter of an ambassador . When she did not return his desperate feelings, Tuvok chose spend several months in isolation studying with a Vulcan master, where he learned to subdue his emotions. Tuvok entered Star Fleet Academy at the age of 25, but found it difficult to fit in. He found the egocentric nature of humans difficult to deal with, but endured it because it was the wish of his parents to enter Star Fleet, and he felt obligated to fulfill their expectations.

In 2371 , he infiltrated the crew of the Maquis raider commanded by a former Star Fleet officer, Chakotay. While hiding from a Cardassian ship in the Badlands , the raider was hit by an energy wave which transported both the Maquis ship and Voyager into the Delta quadrant. Tuvok's status of a spy was revealed when he and Captain Janeway welcomed him back onto the ship.

Tuvok was a devoted parent and husband. Tuvok married T'Pel in 2304 , and later had four children, three sons and a daughter. In 2374 , he learned that his eldest son Sek had a child, named T'Meni after his mother, making him a grandfather. Tuvok was a prize-winning orchid breeder, and used grafting techniques on flowers from both Earth and Vulcan. Tuvok's main pastime was the Vulcan game kal-toh , which he frequently played with Ensign Harry Kim. He also spent his spare time meditating, and instructed various members of the crew in this pursuit over the years.

His closest friend aboard Voyager was Captain Janeway herself, who trusted him completely, and whom he considered the closest thing to family aboard Voyager . Previous to his assignment to Voyager, Tuvok was an instructor at Star Fleet Academy for a period of sixteen years.

Chief Engineer - Lieutenant Junior Grade B'Elanna Torres

BElanna Torres.jpg

With mother being Klingon and her father being human, B'Elanna was quick to anger and hard to get through to. Though she adored her father as a child, he left B'elanna and her mother, severing any contact. Blaming herself for his leaving, combined with being made fun of for her Klingon head ridges, the young girl began to resent her Klingon heritage. She attended Star Fleet Academy, but felt she did not fit in, continuously getting in fights with teachers and other students. Within two years, she was suspended once and had four disciplinary hearings against her, and she eventually dropped out in 2368 . She met Chakotay and joined the Maquis, finding that fighting Cardassians was the perfect outlet for her anger issues. Being a brilliant Engineer, she was an asset to the Maquis, and even managed to re-program a Cardassian missile for their own use.

Once on Voyager, B'Elanna found more people to fight with, usually the next in line for Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Carey. Once she proved her skills to Captain Janeway and earned her respect, Janeway then made her Chief Engineer over Carey. Often captured by Delta Quadrant species due to her genetic diversity, she continued to feel conflicted about it herself. After marrying Tom Paris and conceiving a child, B'Elanna even went so far as to try and genetically modify her child, to ensure it would not look Klingon, and face the same hardships she did as a child.

B'Elanna was, in part, responsible for Seven of Nine being abandoned by the Borg. During Voyager's first encounter with the Borg, she helped to engineer nanoprobes to use as a weapon against Species 8472 , who had become a threat to both Voyager and the Borg. When Seven, on board Voyager, attempted to assimilate the Star Fleet ship after the Species 8472 threat had been eliminated, B'Elanna created a power surge through Seven that disabled her. This severed Seven's link to the Collective, and the collective left without coming back for the drone.

Pilot - Lieutenant Junior Grade Tom Paris

Tom Paris (2378).jpg

Tom had a love of the ocean and sailing: he planned to join the Federation Naval Patrol until his father pressured him into joining Star Fleet . At the age of eight, his father took him for a trip in an S-class shuttlecraft, and Tom discovered that he loved piloting. He was dismissed from Star Fleet when he tried to cover up a piloting error on his behalf which led to the deaths of three fellow officers. After being expelled from Star Fleet, he joined the Maquis , but was captured on his first mission. Paris was serving time in a Federation Penal Settlement in New Zealand when he received a visit from Captain Janeway. She gave him the opportunity to redeem himself, by participating on a mission to track down the Maquis who were hiding in the Badlands .

On board Voyager, he quickly befriended Harry Kim, and began dalliances with any woman that could stand him for the night. A few serious relationships included Kes, on-and-off with the Delaney sisters , and his eventual wife, B'Elanna . Hobbies included creating and playing in Holodeck programs, playing practical jokes on friends and colleagues, and enjoying old Earth movies, specifically of the science fiction and horror genre.

Paris was the first Star Fleet officer to reach warp 10 . While experimenting with ways for Voyager to quicken her journey, he realized that in simulations, the shuttle was being ripped from the nacelles , not the the other way around. With a minor adjustment, the transwarp threshold could be crossed safely. Despite success in the simulations, the real flight experience caused him to begin to mutate. A disoriented Tom then kidnapped Captain Janeway and took her on a Warp Ten journey, which caused her to mutate as well. When Voyager found them, they had evolved into amphibians. They produced three offspring which the crew left on the planet. Once back on Voyager , The Doctor was able to "de-evolve" them back to their Human forms. Trans-warp travel was then deemed too dangerous and the idea was abandoned.

Operations Manager - Ensign Harry Kim

Harry Kim.jpg

Fresh out of the Academy, being stranded in the Delta Quadrant hit Harry pretty hard. With Voyager being his first field assignment, the Ensign wasn't even sure how to address his Captain. He was quickly befriended by Tom Paris, who, combined with his own rebellious nature, helped Harry instill some confidence in himself over the years. Though he always seemed unlucky in love, Tom continued to set up double-dates between the two men and two female officers known as the Delaney sisters.

Harry's green nature may have labeled him an "easy mark" - he was abducted from The Caretaker , the Vhnori , the Akritirians , and held captive on-board Voyager by the Hirogen . What he lacked in experience, however, he made up for in ingenuity. He and friend Tom Paris built the Delta Flyer , a technologically-advanced shuttle, and its successor, the Delta Flyer Mark 2 , which became an asset to the USS Voyager .

In addition to tagging along on Tom's holodeck programs, Harry enjoyed a variety of his own hobbies. He played music on both the clarinet and saxophone, and enjoyed sports such as volleyball, Parrises squares, and tennis. Perhaps processing an eidetic memory, Harry claims to remember what it was like inside his mother's womb.

Enlisted Crew Members

Head of astrometrics - seven of nine.

7 of 9.png

Formerly known as Annika Hansen, the Borg drone known as "Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01" was stranded on Voyager while the two fought against beings only identified as Species 8472 . Having been assimilated at six years old, the Borg Collective was all that she knew. Her parents were exobiologists investigating the existence of the Borg, and in 2356 , all three were assimilated. Naturally, being ripped away from the Borg was traumatic for the person the Voyager crew would come to affectionally call "Seven," which took her some time to come to terms with.

Assisted by Harry Kim, Seven of Nine designed and constructed the ship's astrometrics lab, which used Borg technology to plot routes that trimmed several years off of Voyager's journey towards the Alpha Quadrant. She would go on to assist Harry and Tom in building the Delta Flyer shuttlecrafts. When Neelix's knowledge of the Delta Quadrant waned, Seven was there to step in and inform the Captain what the Borg knew about the species or sector in question. Though not one to usually get along with the crew, Seven did not seem to mind being an outsider, though her lack of empathy did make interpersonal relationships problematic.

Ironically enough, one of Seven's first friends was that of a crewmember's child - Naomi Wildman . The young girl, like Seven, also felt out of place on Voyager, since there was no else like her on board. Naomi, who wanted the made-up job of 'Captain's Assistant,' secretly studied Seven, deciding that the Borg pursuit of perfection would help her achieve her goal of working on the bridge. When Seven discovered Naomi spying on her, she befriended her, admiring her ambition. This may have started Seven's knack for babysitting; in 2376 , Voyager rescued four "immature" Borg drones: children who had been assimilated. Seven became their den mother of sorts, creating a strict timetable for them, and strived to help them assimilate back into a more normal way of life. Three of the four children were either returned or adopted, with the oldest choosing to remain on Voyager.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) - " The Doctor "

Doctor.jpg

Intended for short-term use only, the Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) Mark 1 was designed with the attributes of its creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman. Programmed with all known medical knowledge, this holographic doctor became much more to the Voyager crew as the years wore on. With limited sentience (holograms cannot feel pain), the EMH experienced prejudice from the Voyager crewmembers, since he was not a "real" Doctor, in the sense that he was not "real." This began to lessen over time, as the Voyager crew, without a medical staff, could not find a replacement doctor, and the EMH was forced into the position of Chief Medical Officer .

Though the Doctor could not feel pain, what he did have was an ego. Most of the crew considered him a computer program, and treated him as such. In turn, he chose to be curt and rude to them, unhappy that he was being used to perform menial medical tasks. Captain Janeway made Tom Paris his nurse, since he had taken a couple courses at the Academy. Once Kes volunteered to replace Tom, relations between the Doctor and the crew improved, with Kes acting as a go-between. During encounters with hostile aliens, the Doctor also proved his worth as a crewmember, and he began to grow as a "person" once allowed to install subroutines. He developed a love of opera, writing, and photography, and became somewhat of a "shutterbug" once he received his mobile emitter , which allowed him to walk freely outside of Sickbay.

Easily his first friend, Kes helped the Doctor come out of his shell, and helped the crew to accept him as a physician and a non-human person. The Doctor became Kes' mentor, as she had developed a great passion for medicine. After being taught social competency by Kes, he tried to teach what he had learned to Seven of Nine, who, like the Doctor, did not exactly fit in with the Voyager crew. He began to develop romantic feelings for Seven, and was crushed when it was clear those feelings would never be returned. Eventually, the crew as a whole were able to overlook his holographic roots, and regarded the Doctor as much as they would any other different species.

Ambassador to the Delta Quadrant - Neelix

Neelix.jpg

Self-appointed ambassador to the Delta Quadrant for Voyager, the short and spotted male Talaxian certainly stood out on Voyager. Coming aboard shortly after the ship was stranded in the Delta Quadrant, Neelix brought along his girlfriend Kes, and convinced Captain Janeway to keep them on board. Neelix's knowledge of the Delta Quadrant and its politics helped Janeway navigate her way through the unknown space, and the longer they stayed on the Federation ship, the more labels Neelix began to give himself. Afraid that his waning knowledge would cause Janeway to abandon him, Neelix appointed himself Head Chef, Chief Morale Officer and Chief Negotiator. He encouraged Kes to make herself as useful as she could be, as well, and she took up residence in a Cargo Bay, creating a hydroponics lab.

Making friends on Voyager was an easy task for Neelix, even at a few crewmember's chagrin. (He insisted on calling Tuvok "Mr. Vulcan," a name that became a term of endearment between the two.) Though his cooking was not exactly to the crew's liking, he continued to experiment and trying to merge Alpha Quadrant recipes with Delta Quadrant ingredients. He also made a great effort to learn the various cultures of the Voyager crew, helping with birthdays, child-rearing, and Klingon high holidays. He was even appointed godfather to the daughter of Samantha Wildman , a role while he took very seriously.

Coming from an independent merchant background, Neelix was also versed in basic engineering, as well as trading. He shadowed Engineering Chief B'Elanna Torres for a time, trying to learn more complex engineering skills. Commander Chakotay once told Neelix he was "the most versatile member of [the] crew," due to his eagerness to learn new skills. Even Lieutenant Command Tuvok, his reluctant friend, complimented Neelix by saying, "You are perhaps the most resourceful individual I have ever known."

Eventually leaving Voyager, joining a small Talaxian colony taking refuge on an asteroid, Neelix continued his work as a Delta Quadrant Ambassador.

Nurse / Assistant to The Doctor - Kes

Kes.jpg

Coming aboard Voyager with her boyfriend Neelix, Kes was one of the first Delta Quadrant species the crew came in contact with. Quickly known for their short life spans, helping the Ocampan people also unfortunately caused Voyager its ticket home. Growing up underground, Kes' curiosity got her captured by the Kazon , and Neelix rescued her with the help of Captain Janeway and her ship. The rescue of Kes and the Voyager / Maquis crew ended with Voyager destroying the Caretaker in order to protect Kes' people from the ones that were capturing Ocampans and torturing them for information.

In addition to truncated life spans, Kes was born with latent psionic abilities, able to sense the presence of others, and could move things with her mind. When she began to lose control of these powers, she received training from her Vulcan friend Tuvok, who taught her to meditate and concentrate. She also looked to the Doctor for training, as her propensity towards gardening had led her to a curiosity towards medicine. She began to split her time between the hydroponics bay and Sickbay, volunteering to become the Doctor's nurse and replace Tom Paris, who resented the job. She also became a go-between for the Doctor and the rest of the crew, who did not treat each other with respect. After helping relations between the Doctor and the Voyager crew, Kes began to branch out and extend her friendship to others.

When Neelix began to show jealousy over her close friendship with Tom Paris, Kes became frustrated, and broke up with him. Confessing to Neelix that she felt they had been growing apart anyway, the two surprisingly stayed close friends. Though the two still cared for each other greatly, they never got back together. Another close friend was Tuvok, whom Kes looked to as a mentor. Though he disapproved of her giggling during meditation sessions, the Vulcan respected her greatly. Captain Janeway also showed a high level of respect towards Kes, despite her youth and inexperience.

After an encounter with Species 8472, Kes' psionic abilities skyrocketed, and she was desperately unable to control them. Rapidly destabilizing at the subatomic level, her condition caused massive damage to Voyager. Fearing for her found-family's lives, she took a shuttle and left the ship. She was able to explore her new state of being, and left the corporeal world behind. As she parted from Voyager, she pushed the ship out of Borg space: 9,500 light years closer to Earth, to thank them for all they had given her.

The USS Voyager was constructed at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards orbiting Mars and was launched from Earth Station McKinley on stardate 48038.5 in 2371 . Voyager was the first ship equipped with a Class-9 warp drive. The ship later docked at Deep Space 9 to begin its first mission: to track down the Maquis ship Val Jean , in the Badlands . The mission was only estimated to last a few weeks.

Once in the Badlands, both the Maquis ship and Voyager were hit by a displacement wave created by the Caretaker entity, by which both ships were thrown 70,000 light years from their original location to the outer edge of the Delta Quadrant .

The Search for Voyager

Voyager officially lost contact with Star Fleet on stardate 48307.5, due to being too great a distance away from the Alpha Quadrant .

Star Fleet presumed the Voyager to be destroyed in the Badlands until 2374 , when the ship's EMH was transmitted to the Federation starship USS Prometheus using a Hirogen owned relay station. The ship, at the time, had been taken over by Romulans . The Doctor , with assistance by an EMH Mark II , returned the ship to Star Fleet, and spoke directly to Star Fleet Headquarters to set the record straight.

After the EMH Mark II reported Voyager' s situation, Star Fleet's Communications Research Center set up the Pathfinder Project to find a way to bring back or maintain constant contact with the ship. This project was personally supervised by Admiral Owen Paris , Tom Paris' father, and Kathryn Janeway's old Captain.

In early 2376 , first contact between Star Fleet Command and the Voyager was finally established over the MIDAS array using an artificial micro-wormhole . Although the periods of data transfer were very limited, not only was Star Fleet able to transmit tactical updates to the Voyager crew, but private conversations between Voyager crew members and their relatives in the Alpha Quadrant were also possible.

Delta Flyer (2375)

  • View history

The Delta Flyer was a specially designed Starfleet shuttlecraft constructed by the crew of the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant in 2375 . The vessel was designed to handle environments that would be too hazardous for a standard shuttlecraft and to be slightly larger than the average shuttle, the crew having acknowledged that standard shuttles were of little use in the increasingly hostile and unexplored Delta Quadrant. The vessel was a blend of Starfleet and Borg technology, designed in collaboration between B'Elanna Torres , Tom Paris , Tuvok , Harry Kim , and Seven of Nine . It was conceived as incorporating a tetraburnium alloy hull with ultra-aerodynamic contours, retractable warp nacelles , parametallic hull plating , unimatrix shielding , and a Borg-inspired weapon system, including photonic missiles , most of which were Paris' conceptions. For aesthetic reasons, Paris designed some of the flight controls to resemble those from the holodeck simulation of Captain Proton ; when Tuvok complained, Paris explained that he wanted to feel the ship and that he was tired of tapping panels. But to Paris' disappointment, the addition of dynametric tailfins was denied by Tuvok. Instead of having the usual two pilot stations, it had several command stations. ( VOY : " Extreme Risk ")

Knowledge of this craft was known to Tuvok as early as 2371 but kept secret due to the Temporal Prime Directive . ( VOY : " Fury ")

Design and first mission [ ]

Delta Flyer in its hanger

The Delta Flyer being prepared for its first mission

The idea to design a larger, more efficient shuttle than the cramped Class 2 shuttle was first given to the Delta Flyer 's designer, Lieutenant junior grade Tom Paris, by the former Borg drone Seven of Nine in 2375 . ( VOY : " Drone ")

Delta Flyer analog cockpit control panel

Subsequently, Paris brought up the idea numerous times, but was always rebuffed. Captain Kathryn Janeway finally authorized the craft's construction, which was led by Paris, in order to retrieve a multi-spatial probe that was lost in the atmosphere of a gas giant and in danger of being stolen by the Malon . The deciding factor was that Paris had already laid a lot of groundwork, and so the shuttle would not have to be designed from scratch. The Malon also began work on a shuttlecraft of their own and finished theirs before the Flyer was complete. When the Malon sent out their shuttle, the Flyer was deployed early, despite a flaw in the vessel's structural integrity . The Flyer was successful in retrieving the probe, but a hull breach started to occur. B'Elanna Torres designed a makeshift device that deployed a temporary force field , successfully containing the breach. ( VOY : " Extreme Risk ")

Rejected features included dynametric tailfins . Harry Kim 's repeated calls to reinforce the hull with kellinite were also continuously rejected. ( VOY : " Extreme Risk ")

2375 missions [ ]

The Delta Flyer 's second mission was to infiltrate a Species 8472 terrasphere . Paris, Kim, and Chakotay took the Flyer out to investigate the terrasphere. When the undercover Chakotay was revealed, Voyager rendezvoused with the Delta Flyer . ( VOY : " In the Flesh ")

The Delta Flyer encountered near-destruction in its third mission when it got caught in an ion storm and crash landed three kilometers under rock on a class M planet. Life support began to fail and Paris, Samantha Wildman , and Tuvok did not believe they could be rescued. The Voyager crew was able to dig through the rock and locate the Delta Flyer . The crew and the Flyer were beamed aboard. ( VOY : " Once Upon a Time ")

In early 2375 , Voyager was equipped with a quantum slipstream drive and used it in an attempt to return to the Alpha Quadrant . The Flyer , piloted by Chakotay and Kim, rode the slipstream ahead of Voyager in order to chart the slipstream and send appropriate phase corrections to Voyager . Unfortunately, the drive proved unstable and nearly caused Voyager to lose structural integrity . Fortunately, a Harry Kim from an alternate timeline where the ship had been destroyed, was able to transmit a phase correction directly to Seven of Nine's Borg implants which shut the drive down. Use of the drive was then abandoned until it could be better understood.

Delta Flyer 2390

The Delta Flyer being chased by the USS Challenger

In the previously mentioned alternate timeline , the Delta Flyer remained in the slipstream on course to the Federation while Voyager crash-landed on a class L planet . Fifteen years later , Chakotay, Kim, and Tessa Omond stole the Delta Flyer from a shipyard and used it to locate the remains of Voyager . They retrieved Seven of Nine's corpse and The Doctor from the buried ship. By analyzing Seven's cranial implant they intended to determine when it had shut down and thus when Voyager was destroyed, allowing them to transmit their message accordingly. The Doctor was the only person who could determine the necessary temporal coordinates for their mission. They used a temporal transmitter to transmit the proper phase corrections to Seven via the implant, which would allow Voyager to remain safe in the slipstream. Unfortunately, Kim's corrections did not work - but with time running out, The Doctor convinced him to send another message, this time with corrections which would collapse the slipstream. Just as he transmitted the drive shutdown sequence, the Delta Flyer was destroyed by a warp core breach induced by attacks from the USS Challenger . ( VOY : " Timeless ")

A few months later, the Delta Flyer was used to go underwater on The Waters of the Moneans . The Flyer was able to take large amounts of stress, entering great depths of water. It was even able to reach the core of the ocean which was quite deep underwater. This core was actually a large containment field generator. ( VOY : " Thirty Days ")

During a mission where Voyager crew stole a Borg transwarp coil , Seven of Nine was captured by the Borg. The coil was installed on board the Delta Flyer , for which it was used to proceed to the unicomplex to retrieve Seven. When Janeway beamed into the complex, she was stuck there with Seven when the Borg Queen activated a dispersal field . Seven was able to disable the Queen's interface to the collective and the field was deactivated. With Janeway and Seven retrieved, the Flyer proceeded back to transwarp and returned to Voyager , pursued by the Queen's diamond ; they were briefly forced to transfer power from life support to the shields during the pursuit to give themselves the necessary shield strength to reach the exit point before they were captured. ( VOY : " Dark Frontier ")

Ellipse interior

The Delta Flyer tractors the Ares IV inside the ellipse.

The Flyer escapes the ellipse

The Delta Flyer is towed out of the ellipse.

When Voyager encountered a graviton ellipse , the Delta Flyer was sent in to locate the Ares IV command module, which was lost in the ellipse in 2032 . The crew of Tom Paris, Chakotay, and Seven of Nine examined several artifacts trapped in the ellipse before finding the command module. While the Flyer attempted to tractor the module out of the ellipse, the ellipse was hit by a dark matter asteroid . The Delta Flyer was severely damaged and Chakotay was injured. Aboard Voyager , B'Elanna Torres devised a method to use an ion distributor from the Ares IV to repair vital components of the Flyer . Seven beamed to the Ares IV module where she located the distributor and downloaded the sensor data and logs of the Ares IV commander, John Kelly . She returned to the Flyer with the distributor and Kelly's body. The distributor was connected to the Flyer power systems and the shuttle was able to escape before the ellipse returned to subspace . ( VOY : " One Small Step ")

During a period of shore leave on Voyager , Janeway took the Flyer to a nearby planet in the Norcadian star system . When Seven and Tuvok were kidnapped by Penk , Voyager engaged in battle with his vessel . Penk was able to disable Voyager , but Janeway arrived in the Flyer and was able to disable Penk's signal antenna, forcing Penk to lower power to his ship's force fields. This allowed Seven and Tuvok, along with several other competitors held hostage aboard the ship, to be rescued. Janeway and the Flyer returned to Voyager . ( VOY : " Tsunkatse ")

Chakotay, Neelix, Harry Kim, and Tom Paris returned from a mission aboard the Delta Flyer and were abducted by a damaged Borg cube run by adolescent Borg. The Flyer was locked in a Borg hangar while the Voyager crew were attempting to negotiate for the return of the shuttle and its crew. Before the Borg cube was destroyed due to a feedback pulse after the Borg attempted to remove Voyager 's deflector dish , the Delta Flyer escaped the ship. ( VOY : " Collective ")

Later that year, Janeway decided to take the Flyer on an astronomical survey, crewed by Voyager crewmembers who were not working to the best of their abilities and who had never been on an away mission. The mission became dire when the Flyer was attacked, disabling its warp drive . Janeway plotted a course for a nearby planet and ordered the crewmen to abandon the Flyer . They refused to leave her, although one crewmember, Mortimer Harren , abandoned the Flyer aboard a escape pod and used it to distract the dark matter object. Harren inadvertently discovered how to deter the object using phasers , which the Delta Flyer used to escape. Soon after Harren was returned to the Flyer , an explosion occurred, disabling it. Voyager picked up the distress signal and retrieved the damaged shuttle. ( VOY : " Good Shepherd ")

The Delta Flyer was impersonated by a vessel piloted by several con artists attempting to use the reputations of the Voyager crew for criminal purposes. In order to track their hiding spot, Voyager captured one of the criminals, Dala , and allowed her to escape aboard the Delta Flyer . Tom Paris and The Doctor stowed away in the aft compartment, apprehended Dala, and retook the Flyer after she flew it to the criminals' hiding spot. ( VOY : " Live Fast and Prosper ")

Delta Flyer crashed on Kelis' homeworld

The Delta Flyer , crashed on Kelis' homeworld

While on an exploration mission, the Delta Flyer crashed on a planet with a pre-warp society. Harry Kim was able to evacuate, but B'Elanna Torres remained aboard and survived the impact. A poet on the planet named Kelis found the Flyer and figured out how to access its database, using Voyager 's experiences in the Delta Quadrant as a basis for his plays. Torres attempted to repair the Flyer with Kelis' help, but the ship was damaged beyond her means. Kim eventually located the Flyer and brought an emergency transmitter from the escape pod, which was used to send a distress signal to Voyager . The Flyer was transported aboard and required major repairs. ( VOY : " Muse ")

When Kes traveled back in time to the first year of Voyager 's journey, the tachyon particles caused by her presence in the past resulted in Tuvok experiencing 'flash-forwards' of events that wouldn't happen on Voyager for several years, with the first example of these being when he suggested that the Delta Flyer be used to navigate a region of space filled with subspace vacuoles due to its advanced sensors over four years before it would even be constructed. ( VOY : " Fury ")

Destruction [ ]

Delta Flyer destroyed

The Delta Flyer is destroyed

In early 2377 , Janeway, Tuvok, and Torres flew the Delta Flyer to a Borg tactical cube , with the goal of infiltrating the vessel and assisting the drones of Unimatrix Zero . While approaching the cube, the Borg Queen located the Flyer . The away team beamed onto the cube just as the Flyer was destroyed. ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero ")

The destroyed Flyer was replaced by a craft of the same name and of similar design and specification, albeit with fewer " Captain Proton "-inspired embellishments. ( VOY : " Drive ")

Naomi Wildman in the cast of Voyager continues a trend of including children on Star Trek shows that started with Ensign Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and continued with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton), Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks)'s teenage son; and Nog (Aron Eisenberg), the son of Rom (Max Grodénchik). Although the USS Voyager was not designed for families, Star Trek: Voyager found a way to attract younger viewers with a relatable character.

Ensign Samantha Wildman (Nancy Hower), a xenobiologist assigned to the USS Voyager, discovers she is pregnant in Star Trek: Voyager season 2, episode 4, "Elogium". Samantha Wildman's husband, Greskrendtregk, is Ktarian, so the Wildman baby's 18-month gestation period means Samantha Wildman is pregnant without knowing it when Voyager is stranded in the Delta Quadrant . The baby's half-Ktarian heritage leads to complications with Samantha's pregnancy, and Naomi Wildman dies soon after being born in Voyager season 2, episode 21, "Deadlock". However, there are two Voyagers in "Deadlock", so the infant Naomi Wildman (Emily Leibovitch) and Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) from one ship replace the versions of themselves lost on the other Voyager.

Star Trek: Voyager’s 20 Best Episodes Ranked

Naomi wildman in star trek: voyager explained, naomi wildman is everyone's favorite half-ktarian..

Naomi Wildman is the half-Ktarian daughter of Ensign Samantha Wildman, and the first child born aboard the USS Voyager. Naomi's Ktarian biology is responsible for the exo-cranial ridges running vertically down her forehead, and rapid childhood growth despite a long gestational period. At 2 years old, Naomi is equivalent to a six-year-old human but develops at a normal human rate after that. Because of this, Naomi is played by 3 different child actors in her first few Star Trek: Voyager appearances: Emily Leibovitch as an infant, Brooke Stephens as a young child, and Scarlett Pomers for the remainder of young Naomi Wildman's appearances on Voyager .

Because the USS Voyager is primarily a science vessel that wasn't intended for long-term missions, the infrastructure to take care of children like Naomi Wildman is cobbled together from Voyager's various resources. In lieu of a formal classroom, Voyager's crew take on the responsibility of educating Naomi through hands-on practice, such as Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) giving Naomi the important job of Captain's Assistant. Ensign Samantha Wildman remains on active duty on the USS Voyager, so entrusts Neelix (Ethan Phillips) as Naomi's godfather. Neelix looks after Naomi frequently, often reading Naomi's bedtime stories and playing with Naomi on the holodeck.

Why Naomi Wildman Is So Popular In Star Trek: Voyager

Naomi wildman takes after voyager's breakout star, seven of nine..

Naomi Wildman is a popular character in Star Trek: Voyager because of the easy way Naomi befriends others, regardless of who they are, and in particular because of Naomi's friendship with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) . Although initially intimidated by Seven, Naomi persists, and Naomi and Seven eventually grow close, bonding over shared meals and games of kadis-kot. Befriending Naomi lets Seven experience a childhood that Seven never really had, because Naomi appears about the same age Seven was when Seven was assimilated by the Borg. Naomi Wildman regards Seven of Nine as part of her family , which expands to include the ex-Borg children in Voyager season 6.

Naomi Wildman could be one of the Voyager characters in Star Trek: Prodigy .

Like Seven of Nine, Naomi Wildman isn't as eager to return to Earth as the rest of Voyager's crew, because the USS Voyager is the only home that Naomi Wildman has known . It isn't confirmed what happens to Naomi after Voyager's return to the Alpha Quadrant, but a future version of Naomi Wildman (Vanessa Branch) is in Starfleet, following through on aspirations to be like her heroes, Seven of Nine and Captain Janeway. If so, Naomi could be one of the Voyager characters in Star Trek: Prodigy , who might show Star Trek 's newest young characters how their own Admiral Janeway helped Naomi Wildman be Star Trek: Voyager 's first youngest hero.
