Panoramic Paarl Rock Hike in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve
Although travel has essentially been a no-go in 2020 – I was fortunate to enjoy the Paarl Rock hike, found within the beautiful Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve… And what a marvellous adventure that turned out to be!
If you are looking for a wonderful, family-friendly hike that is neither too demanding, nor too short/long, this is the ideal hike for you. While you are at it, take time to savour the natural beauty of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve.
Exploring Paarl: The Hidden Winelands Gem
To me, Paarl offers natural Cape beauty, scenic panoramas and family-friendly adventures. Best of all, it is a great travel destination, found within a relatively short distance from Cape Town.
Ever since I first explored Paarl in 2014 and again in 2016 for work purposes, I have fallen in love with this little Cape Winelands town . I have always felt welcome when visiting Paarl and left with the most incredible travel memories .
Everything from the great wine farms and restaurants to the unique accommodation, historic monuments and charming local attractions make this a special place to visit.
Going Up, Up, Up
Many people drive, cycle or walk up the long gravel road, Jan Philips Bergpad to Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. It’s quite a winding, rough road in places so best suited to sturdier vehicles or bakkies that can handle farm roads and bumps well. If you do go up in your car, drive very slowly and carefully .
Fortunately, the drive up is peaceful and incredibly scenic. From the moment you start on the gravel road, past farm houses, the views are incredible. Every corner rewards you with expansive views of the entire Paarl valley and let me tell, it’s spectacular from the word go.
The road leads right up to the main Paarl Rock, as well as to the Bretagne and Gordon’s Rocks.
There is nice, though limited, parking space at both attractions. So if you are pressed for time but still want to see the rocks, this is a great drive or cycle alternative.
Setting off from Meulwater Botanical Garden
In 2014, I had the pleasure of visiting the Taal Monument with my brother and his girlfriend. Catching its beauty at sunset was a special memory for me. This is probably when I first realised how much Paarl has to offer travellers and locals alike.
One of our stops that evening was the Meulwater Botanical Garden. Returning several years later, I was impressed to see the garden and nature reserve are as beautiful and well-maintained as ever.
Meulwater Botanical Garden is also a delightful place to explore or spend the day in nature, picnicking or admiring the local beauty. Picnic benches and braai spots add to its family-friendly appeal.
This is where you can start your hike to the Paarl Rocks from. We set off from the Meulwater parking lot and, according to Google Maps, this is about 2.7 km to the Paarl Rock.
This is definitely an accurate estimation, as we hiked 8km (overall), covering some 12 000 steps on the day.
It sounds like a lot – but it’s a lovely, relatively easy hike that won’t pose too much of a challenge, even if you aren’t in peak fitness.
There is a slight upward climb from the Meulwater parking lot but the rest of the route is pretty easy-going, especially coming back down.
Along the way, you pass two booms – one at Meulwater parking lot and another just a few metres up, above the Meulwater Water Treatment Plant.
As it was a weekend, I was told that we might have to pay. So my friend and I took cash with but there was no one collecting fees that day. Either way, I would suggest taking cash with; it’s meant to be about R40 per person.
Hiking in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve
There is not much signage on the hiking route so we were a bit confused at first. However, once you pass the water treatment plant (you really can’t miss it) and second boom, you are well on your way. 🙂
The hike up was beautiful. You pass gorgeous proteas and other rich Cape flora, punctuated only by stunning vistas and distant valleys that peek out behind the fynbos.
I also love how there are literally huge granite boulders everywhere in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. It’s a wonder to see.
For a time, we were the only ones on the road (except for the abundant birdlife) but eventually we passed other hikers and cars.
However, even as two women hiking alone, at no point did we feel unsafe. While caution is always advisable when hiking anywhere and you should never hike by yourself, this is a safe, family-friendly hike.
A lot families with young children either walk or drive up here. It is a great way to get the whole family outdoors. Especially if you want to enjoy a leisurely walk or hike in the Cape countryside.
History of the Paarl Rocks
After a short trek up the gravel road (much improved on the one leading to the Meulwater parking), we arrived at the Paarl Rock Heritage Site/View Point.
Here, you find limited parking, a lovely bench and an impressive, well-cared for wooden walkway; this leads towards Paarl’s famous rock.
For those who don’t know, Paarl is famous for the huge granite outcrop of rock(s) that cover its mountain. Although there are three outcrops – Paarl Rock, Bretagne and Gordon’s Rocks respectively – the Paarl Rock is indeed the most famous and easily accessible.
Paarl means ‘pearl’ in Dutch and it is believed that it was so named because the rock(s) are smooth and glisten like a pearl when wet.
I am not so sure on the pearl bit but the Paarl Rock is definitely an amazing natural wonder.
Things You Need to Know about Hiking to Paarl Rock
When you climb up onto its smooth, almost slippery surface and stand overlooking the Paarl Valley and beyond, it feels like you are on top of the world. Or perhaps on top of some foreign planet’s surface.
It can be extremely windy and cool on the Rock and it’s pretty smooth and slippery in places, so you need to watch your step and stay a safe distance from the edge… trust me, there is a massive drop on almost every side.
I was initially gingerly walking around on top of the Rock’s surface because my hiking shoes were a bit worn and don’t have the best grip but if you go slowly and crouch if needed, it’s pretty safe.
Families took their kids up to see the views, keeping a safe distance from the edge. This is fine, I suppose but definitely keep a hand on little ones when exploring.
Once we were up there, braving the elements and soaking up the incredible views, especially near the white beacon, I was enthralled. It’s one of the more invigorating, special travel experiences I have had in the Cape. 🙂
I think the photos speak for themselves but this is definitely an attraction everyone visiting or staying in the Western Cape should try see.
Who Should Hike to Paarl Rock?
I think overall, the hike to Paarl Rock is safe and fun for all ages. Because it is not particularly strenuous or long, it’s especially fun for kids around aged seven and up.
For younger kids, you might have to carry them and that could get a bit tiring but if you are driving up, it’s a breeze.
I feel this is one of the most family-friendly hikes I have ever done. What’s especially great is that you can picnic or braai afterwards in Meulwater Botantical Garden and make a real day of it. 🙂
Tackling Bretagne and Gordon’s Rocks
For those who are brave enough, you can also hike up Bretagne Rock. Apparently, Gordon’s Rock is inaccessible from what I have read online.
If you walk a bit further up the road from the Paarl Rock, you will encounter the Bretagne and Gordon’s Rocks Heritage Site/View Point.
This is where our journey essentially ended because the rock’s surface is extremely smooth and slippery and there was no way I would have risked it with my shoes and expensive camera.
A lot of hikers, even some with older kids, attempted this next climb – but if you do it, you will need to be careful and ensure you have proper, sturdy hiking boots and a backpack for all your essentials so that you can climb up hands-free.
Once you get up a bit higher, there are chains and makeshift steps cut into the rock face. However, as we didn’t venture high enough (I climbed a bit of the way and then slid/ran back down), I can’t really comment on that. 🙂
While you are at the view point, be sure to follow the second wooden walkway to find the secret ‘cave’ and little forest, which lies at the end of a short wooden staircase.
Standing alone in that gnarled, almost desolate forest floor, overlooking a distant dam, felt like something out of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers… an unexpected bonus for any Tolkien fan. 🙂
How the Hike Rated Overall
The hike back down was even better once the sun came out more and the sleepy Proteas opened up to line our pathway.
Overall, this is one of the most scenic, lovely hikes I have done to date and I can give it an easy 10/10 rating for stunning views, overall hiking safeness, ease of access, distance and natural beauty. It’s a great hike that I can definitely recommend. 🙂
A special word of thanks to my dear friend and travel partner, Alicia , who accompanied me on this hike and essentially made it possible. 🙂

CHARTERED ADVENTURES
PAARL: PAARL & BRETAGNE ROCK
Paarl -meaning pearl in Dutch – is famous for its wine, and the granite boulders on the mountain bordering the town. When wet the colour of the large boulders are said to resemble that of a pearl, hence the name Paarl Rock. It forms part of the Cape fold mountains and is a national heritage site.
Follow the dirt road turn off for roughly 6km, wind your way up the mountain, and you will come to the Meulwater braai and picnic area. Here you can safely park your car under the Italian Pine tree’s and make use of the sites clean ablutions and braai (bbq) facilities.
The hike to Paarl and Bretagne Rock is fairly short, roughly 4km there and back. As you make your way up the 1st slab of granite rock you will come across an interesting boulder near the top. Covered in craters and holes, caused by wind and water erosion, it makes for an excellent yet difficult rock climbing route. As you move around the boulder you will come across a summit beacon, as well as an old cannon. The cannon was used by the early settlers as a signal system, to warn farmers in the area of ships (friend or foe) in the Table Bay harbour. To the right, in the distance, you will see a second taller rock formation, Bretagne Rock.
The hike up Bretagne Rock involves navigating a long, steep section of granite, where you will need to make use of a chain handrail. It does look intimidating from the bottom, but its not as bad as it appears. Hold on tight and go slowly and you will be fine.
This is the most challenging part of the hike. When wet the granite is extremely slippery, so the correct footwear is essential. There are also sections where you will be on all fours, as you scramble up or down short slippery sections. Its not a very technical hike but its not a simple stroll up either, you need to have some flexibility and those with mobility issues will really struggle.
The route was fairly well marked, but we did have to scramble up some rocky surfaces to get to Bretagne Rock. So we may have somehow lost the correct path. It was easy to find our way back though, you can’t really get lost on top of a boulder! We all felt safe in the reserve and facilities are great. Go enjoy the hike and have a braai afterwards!

WANT TO HIKE PAARL ROCK?
Hike to Paarl Rock
Take in the sounds of countless birds, and the sites of fynbos, granite boulders and the sweeping Paarl valley below.
20-October-2020
There are few things that make you pause quite like a view that stretches out before you without end. I love finding them, those views that seem to go impossibly on and on. It’s one of my favourite parts of going on any adventure and why I love being a passenger more than I like being a driver. Which is why I was excited to finally venture to Paarl Rock and hike up to its famous viewing point.
From Meulwater parking lot it’s less of a hike and more of an easy uphill stroll. One way is roughly 3km. But if you walk from Paarl Rock to Bretagne and Gordon’s Rocks too then you could easily have walked 8km in total – not bad for a single afternoon!
You can also drive right up to Paarl Rock if you’re pressed for time. Space is limited and it is a dirt road so drive extra slowly and carefully because you can’t always judge the angle or size of the rocks protruding out the road.
My companion and I decided to walk up from the Meulwater parking lot and stopped regularly to take in the sounds of countless birds, and the sites of fynbos, granite boulders and the sweeping Paarl valley below. We also packed snacks to create a makeshift picnic once we reached the top.
The views from the top are breathtaking, to say the least. They’ll draw you in and make you stop in your track. You can spend anything from a few minutes to a half-hour at a time admiring the view. And there’s plenty of places to sit down and tuck into those snacks.
Be warned though, it can get pretty windy and the Bretagne and Gordon’s Rocks are very steep so bring proper climbing shoes and have your hands free if you’re going to attempt them.

Drive, climb, picnic, hike and fish
The drivable routes inside the reserve amount to around 25 km. Most of them can be driven in a regular sedan, but some are badly eroded and a vehicle with high ground clearance is highly recommended. There are three large granite domes in the reserve: Paarl Rock, Bretagne and Gordon's Rock. The former can be climbed by families including children, but Bretagne is too dangerous for small children unless they are tethered to adults. Gordon's Rock can only be climbed by skilled mountaineers. There are three picnic sites in or near the reserve and the ablution facilities were neat and tidy during my visit. You have to pay to enter on weekends and public holidays but entry is free during the week.
A must do over the weekend No excuses. You can visit this by car, on foot, with a bicycle. Alone or with friends. And the experience will be divine. You and nature, nothing else. Just come... Enjoy the picturesque landscape of fynbos vegetation dominated by massive rounded granite rock formations set among wild olives, rock candlewoods and wagon trees. Take a vigorous hike, or climb Bretagne Rock, follow one of the many hiking trails, visit Mill water Wild Flower Garden where numerous species of Proteas may be viewed, catch a bass at Nantes dam or enjoy mountain biking, picnics and panoramic views of the Drakenstein valley. Entry fees Entry is R30 per occupant in a vehicle payable at the reserve’s main gate. Entry is free during the week. Buy your map with the mountain’s MTB and hiking routes at the Paarl Visitors Information Centre at R50. Directions As you enter Paarl Main Road via the N1 from CT, take a left at the off-ramp. Follow Paarl Main Road, go straight over the first robot and then left at the first road on your left hand side (Jan Phillips Mountain Drive). Follow this road for approximately 6kms until you get to the Meulwater day braai & picnic site. Alternatively, follow the road leading up to the Afrikaans Language Monument (Gabbema Doordrif Road) and take the dirt road turning off to the right (Jan Phillips Mountain Drive) leading past the Amphi theatre, until you reach the Meulwater day braai & picnic site picnic area. GPS Co-ordinates: Lat: -33° 45′ 27.594″ Long: 18° 56′ 50.3658″ Facility hours Summer: 07:00 – 19:00 (1 Oct – 31 March) Winter: 07:00 – 18:00 (1 April – 30 Sept) Note: No entry is allowed 1 hour before closure times. Important information Remember, there are no shops on the reserve, so bring along your own fire wood, grid and supplies. Strictly no dogs or music is allowed in the reserve and day camps. No horse riding facilities available. Only licensed vehicles, no off-road motorbikes and/or quad bikes allowed. No larger than 22 seated busses are allowed. There are no swimming facilities on the reserve. Please help us keep the mountain clean by using available refuge bins. This is a high fire risk area – STRICTLY NO FIRES in areas other than demarcated braai/camp facilities. Report any fires immediately!
Not kid friendly, with sheer unprotected drops all around, the walk up is challenging and fun. Chains are installed where the gradient is steep, but the view from the top is breathtaking.
What a treat to get out and about after lockdown! Took our kids for a hike and it was great to be outside again after many months in lockdown. I’m so grateful for this beautiful natural space.
Went on a wonderful hike at the Paarl mountain nature reserve. There are many different routes to choose from. The 360 ° panoramic views overlooking the Paarl valley and surrounds were extraordinary and we could even see Table mountain in the distance. It is a relatively easy climb/walk although their are a few steep hills. We had a map but the routes however were very poorly marked and most of the time we had to find/make our own way.
This is the place to be on a weekend for a good run, walk or cycling in Paarl Mountain. So great to be able to use this mountain, especially now during lockdown in South Africa. This is probably one of the Western Cape's best kept secrets.
Hike to the 3 Granite Boulders in the Paarl Rock Nature Reserve
When Is the Best Time
Paarl Rock Nature Reserve is an excellent destination throughout the year, but it should be sunny or at least dry. The rocks are utterly exposed, it can be windy, and it’s not pleasant in the rain. Beautiful proteas and wildflowers bloom in spring, in September and October.
Avoiding Crowds
Paarl Rock is still a "hidden" gem and is more known by the South Africans. Therefore, it's a little busy on weekends and public holidays, especially the braai (BBQ) areas, but far away from crowded. On weekdays, enjoy the tranquillity on top of the rocks.
Opening Hours of the Paarl Rock Nature Reserve
- Summer: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. (1 Oct – 31 March)
- Winter: 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. (1 April – 30 Sept)
- Last entry 1 hour before closure times.
Directions and Road Conditions
The huge boulders are high above the town, with a 360-degree view of the valley and the vineyards. Turn off the R45 into the Jan Phillips Mountain Drive to get to the reserve. The gravel roads within the reserve are in good condition, but the one leading to the rocks needs some attention, especially after rain. There is ample parking Google Maps Location
Several hiking trails ranging from 2.5 km to 10 km exist. The most popular one takes about two hours to Paarl Rock and Bretagne Rock, where chains have been added for safety. The trailhead starts at the reserve's top at the well-maintained picnic and braai areas. Bring your own water and a picnic. An entrance fee for the car and each visitor is requested. The indigenous garden at Meulwater is worth a visit. Nearby is the Afrikaans Language Monument.

Location and Tips
Paarl Rock is three granite outcrops, the second biggest on earth, more than 500 million years old. It was declared a Nature Reserve in 1977. The three rocks are Paarl Rock, Bretagne Rock, and Gordon’s Rock; the former names were Diamond and Pearl Mountain. After heavy rainfall, the rocks sparkle like diamonds and pearls. That is the reason for the town's name, Paarl, which is the Dutch word for pearl.

Paarl Rock Climb a real Joy
We treated our Sunday visitors to the rock climb onto Bretagne rock, one of 3 granite outcrops on Paarl Mountain. The views from the top were wonderful. Table Mountain was clearly visible. The beautiful new stairway at the foot of Bretagne rock, that were recently installed, take you down 400+ stairs to the flat fynbos area behind the rocks and onto a walking route. The beautiful shady stairway under old Wild Olive Trees with beautiful bird sounds echoing between the two rocks were something very special. In time to come, the growth either side of the stairway will become something special in all seasons.
Bad roads, beautiful views though. Road was closed at some point and no warning at the beginning of the road.
The Paarl mountain reserve is a must see place to visit. Make sure you go all the way to the top, through the boom gates which signal the entrance to the park. If you park before the boom and walk through, you do not have to pay anything. There are many hiking trails, cycling trails and picnic stops. There are still wild life at the top, and at nigh, even leopards are still spotted by monitor camera's.
An un-tarred but drivable road, with a standard vehicle , takes you to the Nature Reserve situated atop - surprise surprise- a mountain! There are a few vantage points halfway up for some panoramic views of Paarl below. We didn't plan to go here, not having good hiking shoes, so we did walk around the picnic, barbecue/braai and mini garden. Lucky to have good weather, many families were outdoors. There are several benches and cooking spots with public toilets nearby. Take extra deck chairs - the spots get filled up quickly. Extra shade will also help if you can't find a shaded spot. There is a small garden with many pathways and trails and wooded areas for picnics. It's also a nature conservancy, so some displays and information about the local flora are posted. Lots of space for restless kids to play and run around. The small pond, within the garden, was quite popular with little people! All in all, recommended for families, groups of friends looking to relax on a Sunday atop picturesque mountains. Also for the nature enthusiast to try the trails and hikes up the mountain, which we plan to do next time around.
The views are spectacular. climbed Paarl Rock. just have good shoes. The road was long and dusty though, but ok.
I had many a happy childhood memory of this place, from as far back as the early 1970s and was therefore pleasantly surprised at how clean and well maintained the facilities are. It is one of very few places in the Winelands that offers the opportunity of bringing your own picnic - and there's not even an entry fee. It can get busy on weekends, so go early to get a good spot. But on the day we were there, in the middle of the week, we were almost the only visitors. The walk through up the slope through the gardens are a must, so bring your walking shoes too.

Unwrapping Cape Town with you
There's something exciting going on in Cape Town every week. Be the first to know what's new with our newsletter:
A treat for adventurers: the launch of the first official guided excursion down the face of Paarl’s iconic peak
She’s not quite Table Mountain, but with her full-bodied figure and polished complexion, Paarl Rock is still a sight to behold. And now, thanks to Cascade Country Manor, it’s possible to not just look at her impressive curves but to get up close and active with them.
In January 2015, the Cape Winelands hotel became the first establishment to offer formal guided abseiling excursions down the peak’s smooth slopes, which means that now everyone and anyone – even those without the equipment or know-how – can rope their way from the top to the bottom of the area’s most famed granite formation. And aside from offering some exhilarating outdoor action, the new adventure activity is also a prime way to take in the Paarl region’s pretty scenery.
“The thing about abseiling is that it gives you the thrill you’re looking for, but because it’s quite a calm, slow activity, it also allows you to just stop and really enjoy the environment you’re in,” says seasoned guide Eckhardt Conradie, a qualified Advanced Mountain Walking Leader and a member of both the Mountain Club of South Africa and the Mountain Search and Rescue service. “So abseiling at Paarl Rock is great because you’re surrounded by amazing views and raw natural beauty – you can see the whole patchwork of the area from up there.”
To be more specific, everything from Table Mountain and the Simonsberg crags to the vineyards of Wellington and Franschhoek are visible from the top of the 100m-high descent route. And because it’s possible to see so many highlights and to soak up so much of nature’s glory while on the four-hour tour, Eckhardt makes sure to enhance the trip by giving guests little morsels of information about the things they’re witnessing. As he says, “It’s not just an extreme activity; it’s a guided educational outing.”
During the drive from the hotel to Paarl Rock, Eckhardt talks at length about the history of the town and the important role it’s played in South Africa’s cultural and linguistic development; while leading abseilers along a leisurely walkway to the elevated launch site, he divulges details about the region’s flora and fauna and unusual granite domes; and after all the excitement is over, while adventurers nibble on snacks in the shade of a forest, he rounds up the experience by answering questions and serving up other fun facts about the district and its peaks (did you know that Paarl Rock is home to a leopard family, for instance?).
The focus on cultural and environmental details is one reason why abseiling at this acclaimed Winelands destination isn’t just for adrenaline addicts and fitness fanatics, but also for casual explorers and family groups. Though, the fact that the mountain’s rounded slopes make for easy abseiling as their steepness increases gradually does help too, as does the comforting knowledge that Eckhardt places a lot of emphasis on safety – he offers an extensive briefing beforehand, double-checks every harness individually and hooks every participant up to two separate rope systems so that they have a back-up.
This way, thrill-seekers can just relax, place all of their trust in the expert guide’s hands and put all of their energy into soaking up the splendid experience of gliding down Paarl Rock’s luscious curves for the first time.
Note: There are a few restrictions involved: children must be 12 years of age or older to participate and all under-18s must have a parent present while abseiling. There are no specific weight limitations, but guests must have a reasonable fitness level so that they can manage the walk up to the top of the rock.
Tip: Abseiling at Paarl Rock makes for a great corporate team-building activity and a fun kids’ birthday party idea – just contact Eckhardt to discuss details.
The Bill: Abseiling costs between R650p/p and R1200p/p, depending on the size of the group – Eckhardt ordinarily caters for up to four people, but he will accommodate up to 10 individuals if given sufficient notice. He is also open to offering group discounts and special prices for children. To book an abseiling experience, phone Cascade Country Manor on +27 (0)21 868 0227 or email [email protected] (soon it’ll also be possible to book via the ActivityBridge website).
Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: time is flexible (tours run all year around, but not in rainy conditions)
Cascade Country Manor | Waterval Road | Paarl | +27 (0)21 868 0227 (the hotel is the meeting point)

CAPE TOWN FOR CAPETONIANS
Paarl Rock: The pearl of the valley
Paarl, once a district of Stellenbosch, became its own division in 1839 with its economy based on the production of wine and the yield of grain. The area was first colonised in 1687 and was originally known as Drakenstein. It was only when a village was established at the foot of Paarl Rock in 1690 that it was given its name that we know today: Paarl.

Paarl is one of South Africa’s oldest towns and is well-known for its mountain or identifying landmark, Paarl Rock.
“Paarl” means “pearl” in Dutch. The area was given this name due to the large granite rocks perched at the top of the hills that often gleamed like pearls after a good rain shower.
It was the glistening Paarl Rock that influenced the name of its home and was the birthplace of its very first village.
In 1865, the small town had a population of 4 929. By 1904 the population had grown to 11 293, of which 5 971 were literate.

The massive granite rock is formed by three rounded formations alongside it that make up the Paarl Mountain. It is the second largest granite outcrop known to man.
The Taal Monument is a unique attraction that marks the formation of the Afrikaans language, and can be found close to the famous earthly structure.

The unusual formation sits atop the mountainside and looks over the vineyards and historic buildings of yesteryear as though it were a guardian of sorts. It has helped chisel the small town into history books and won many a heart with its splendid views since. It is truly a landmark that is hard to forget.

Laborie Paarl Rock
Experience desciption.
Join a guided gravel ride to Krismiskamp in the Paarl Reserve, then return via the scenic south side of Paarl, offering breathtaking vistas of the Paarl Valley. Pause for a photo session at Paarl Rock before heading back to Laborie, with an option to tackle some additional single tracks.
About Laborie:
Nestled at the foot of Paarl Mountain is Laborie, a historic wine estate in the core of Paarl. It’s an epicenter of activities and offers arguably the most striking view of Paarl Mountain.
Wander up the Avenue, and you’ll encounter Stoep, the estate’s quaint bistro-style eatery. With panoramic views of lush vineyards and majestic mountains, it’s a treat for the senses. Open daily, Stoep prides itself on offering scrumptious breakfast, lunch, and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, all centered around local, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients.
Guests can pick up a variety of Stoep’s offerings, including handcrafted pasta, desserts, and ready-to-eat meals at the Estate’s Farm Grocer. Dedicated to uplifting local enterprises, the Farm Grocer offers a selection of fresh bread, meats, cheeses, home goods, and of course, wine.
And, since Laborie is a wine estate, wine aficionados can indulge in wine tasting sessions at the historic Manor House. There, you can savor Laborie’s finest wines, complemented by a curated cheese or charcuterie board.

Vampire Weekend: Only God Was Above Us review – their most adventurous set yet
(Columbia) Indian raga, hip-hop and scuzzy, Strokes-like rock replace the west African guitar sounds of old on Ezra Koenig and co’s dazzling fifth album
W hen Vampire Weekend emerged in the mid-00s they sounded like nothing else around, quoting unfashionable sources such as Minutemen and west African guitar sounds (via Paul Simon) alongside a barrage of knowing, Ivy-League lyrical reference points. Only God Was Above Us , their fifth studio album, is perhaps their most musically adventurous since that 2008 self-titled debut: a dazzling auditory romp that takes in feedback and distortion, arpeggiating pianos, curlicued orchestral pop, 90s hip-hop rhythms and levels of chef’s-kiss production detail best appreciated on headphones.
Has a Vampire Weekend song ever sounded less like Vampire Weekend than the dubby, cinematic synth-and-trumpet fantasia The Surfer ? Gen-X Cops out-Strokes the Strokes at their own grizzled New York scuzz-pop, while Mary Boone , tangentially named after a disgraced New York art dealer, has time for Indian raga and a choir. As ever, mortality looms large – the title comes, indirectly, from a survivor of an 80s American air disaster. But reckonings with the past – New York in the 80s, family trees, how “the cruel, with time, becomes classical” ( Classical ) – also run through singer Ezra Koenig ’s skein of allusions and heartfelt exhortations. Both Capricorn and Hope, the eight-minute closer, are about not trying so hard and letting go: wise, rather than clever words.

Beyoncé’s Country Is America: Every Bit of It
On the bold, sprawling “Cowboy Carter,” the superstar plays fast and loose — and twangy — with genre.
- Share full article
By Jon Pareles
The first song on “Cowboy Carter,” Beyoncé’s not-exactly-country album, makes a pre-emptive strike. “It’s a lot of talking going on while I sing my song,” she observes in “Ameriican Requiem” over guitar strums and electric sitar, adding, “It’s a lot of chatter in here.”
That’s an acknowledgment that a pop superstar’s job now extends well beyond creating and performing songs. In the era of streaming and social media, Beyoncé knows that her every public appearance and utterance will be scrutinized, commented on, cross-referenced, circulated as clickbait and hot-taked in both good faith and bad. Every phrase and image are potential memes and hyperlinks.
It’s a challenge she has engaged head-on since she released her visual album “Beyoncé” in 2013. For the last decade, even as her tours have filled stadiums, she has set herself goals outside of generating hits. Beyoncé has deliberately made each of her recent albums not only a musical performance but also an argument: about power, style, history, family, ambition, sexuality, bending rules. They’re albums meant to be discussed and footnoted, not just listened to.
“Cowboy Carter” is an overstuffed album, 27 tracks maxing out the 79-minute capacity of a CD and stretching across two LPs. It flaunts spoken-word co-signs from Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton that interrupt its flow; it includes some fragmentary, minute-long songs. Its sprawl is its own statement of confidence: that even half-finished experiments are worth attention.
The “Cowboy Carter” album cover is an opening salvo, brandishing western and American symbols: Beyoncé holding an American flag while riding a white horse sidesaddle, with platinum-blond hair proudly streaming. In a red-white-and-blue outfit, high-heeled boots and a pageant sash that reads “Cowboy Carter,” she’s a beauty queen and a white-hatted heroine claiming her nation — her country, in both senses. The politics of her new songs are vague and glancing, but the music insists that every style is her American birthright. As a pop star it is: Pop has always breached stylistic boundaries, constantly exploiting subcultures to annex whatever might make a song catchier.
Beyoncé grew up in Texas, where country music has long mingled with styles from jazz to blues to hip-hop — and where, in fact, early cowboys were enslaved Black men . Beyoncé met a racial backlash when she performed “Daddy Lessons,” a country song from her 2016 album “Lemonade” about gun-toting self-defense, with the (then-Dixie) Chicks at the 2016 Country Music Association Awards. Presumably that’s what she alluded to when she wrote on Instagram that there was “an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed.”
She wasn’t daunted. Instead she pushed further, and the mere prospect of Beyoncé releasing a country album stirred things up. Even before its release, “Cowboy Carter” prompted reminders of country’s obscured Black roots — like the African origins of the banjo and the genre’s long cross-pollination with the blues — and pointed at, yet again, its historical exclusion of nonwhite performers, despite a handful of exceptions like Martell, Charley Pride and, more recently, Darius Rucker, Mickey Guyton and Kane Brown.
What Beyoncé drew from country is productions that feature hand-played instruments — guitars, keyboards, drums — rather than the programmed beats and glittering electronics that propelled her 2022 album “Renaissance,” which also had Beyoncé on horseback on the cover and was subtitled “Act I.” That album was Beyoncé’s time-warped, multilayered homage to the electronic dance music that emerged from Black gay subcultures. “Cowboy Carter,” subtitled “Act II,” also scrambles eras and styles, with samples, electronics and multitracked vocal harmonies unapologetically joining the guitars.
The advance singles from “Cowboy Carter” paired “16 Carriages,” a booming arena-country song about Beyoncé’s industrious career and artistic drive, with the foot-stomping, banjo-picking “Texas Hold ’Em,” about enjoying Texas-style good times away from home. “Texas Hold ’Em” seized No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, making Beyoncé the first Black woman to do so, and topped the all-genre Hot 100.
If Beyoncé had merely wanted to make mainstream country hits, she could have hired a seasoned Nashville producer and had her pick of expert Music Row songwriters. But “Cowboy Carter” has different aspirations, and Beyoncé brought her own brain trust, including producers known for hip-hop and R&B. “This ain’t a Country album. This is a Beyoncé album,” she wrote on Instagram. That’s true.
“Cowboy Carter” leans into its anticipated discourse, openly interrogating categories and stereotypes and pointedly ignoring formulas. With historical savvy, Beyoncé enlisted Linda Martell — the Black country singer whose 1970 album, “Color Me Country,” included the first charting country hit by a Black woman, “Color Him Father” — to provide spoken words. For the intro of “Spaghettii” — which features Beyoncé rapping — Martell says, “Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they? Yes, they are. In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined.”
Beyoncé gathers young Black women currently striving for country careers — Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts, Tiera Kennedy and Tanner Adell — on a remake of the Beatles’ veiled civil-rights song, “Blackbird.” It’s a careful gesture, though it might have been more substantial to write a new song with them.
The album includes some understated, largely acoustic contenders for country or adult-contemporary radio play — notably “II Most Wanted,” a duet with Miley Cyrus that harks back to Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” and “Levii’s Jeans,” a boast about being a “sexy little thing” that she shares with a besotted Post Malone. In the steady-thumping, Motown-tinged “Bodyguard,” Beyoncé plays an amorous, jealous but selfless partner in an uncertain romance. And in “Protector,” an acoustic-guitar lullaby, Beyoncé personifies a loving, supportive parent singing about “lifting you up so you will be raised.”
Beyoncé also reworks Parton’s “Jolene” — a country classic about a dangerous temptress — by turning it inside out. Where Parton’s 1973 original had her “begging” Jolene to stay away, in 2024 Beyoncé isn’t one to cede power. She starts out by “warning” Jolene and raises the threat level from there, reminding her target, “I know I’m a queen.”
Martell returns to introduce “Ya Ya,” explaining, “This particular tune stretches across a range of genres. And that’s what makes it a unique listening experience.” The song is a hand clapping, 1960s-flavored garage-rock stomp that samples Nancy Sinatra, quotes the Beach Boys and brandishes lines like “There’s a whole lot of red in that white and blue/History can’t be erased,” then moves on to dancing and lust. It’s not geared for any radio format. It’s just a romp.
It’s the odder, genre-fluid songs that give the album its depth. “Just for Fun” — a hymnlike duet with Willie Jones, a Louisiana songwriter who draws on country and R&B — plunges into Beyoncé’s somber low register as she sings, “I need to get through this/Or just get used to it.” “Riiverdance” deploys intertwined Celtic-tinged guitars and close-harmony backup vocals to sketch an enigmatic relationship that encompasses murder and resurrection and weekend seductions. And “II Hands II Heaven” is equally cryptic and celebratory; using an electronic pulse drawn from Underworld’s “Born Slippy (Nuxx),” it has Beyoncé and backup voices singing about whiskey, coyotes, God, sex and “Lost virgins with broken wings that will regrow.”
Beyoncé has been a stalwart of the full-length album, sequencing and juxtaposing songs in synergistic ways. But “Cowboy Carter” is a bumpier ride than “Renaissance,” “Lemonade” or “Beyoncé.” It suggests that Beyoncé wanted to pack all she could into one side trip before moving on elsewhere. Perhaps she’s already immersed in Act III.

Tucker Carlson opens Kid Rock tour with fiery take on America: ‘Weird, slightly crazy, full of love’
Fiery comments contrasting the “f*cked up” and “beautiful country” went viral after Kid Rock’s surprise opening act.
Hank Williams Jr., Jason Aldean, Big & Rich and Travis Tritt weren’t the only big names to grace the stage during the kick-off of Robert James Ritchie’s, AKA Kid Rock’s, Rock the Country tour in Gonzales, Louisiana. In the spotlight behind a lectern that read “United States of ‘Merica,” X host Tucker Carlson ignited a crowd “united by our love of country and under God.”
Listed as “HUGE SURPRISE GUEST” on Saturday’s schedule, Carlson’s introduction of Ritchie followed a set from Williams at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center and began with a candid take on what brought him to the show, and wound up with him knocking the narrative-driven media for divisiveness.
“The country they tell me about on the internet is f*cked up. The country that I experience when I walk through this crowd, or when I wake up in my town of 100 people in a rural area, is a beautiful country filled with beautiful people,” said the commentator during remarks shared online.

“I wound up here tonight because I was having dinner at my house with Kid Rock a few months ago,” began Carlson who divulged, “He said, ‘You should come and open for me on my summer tour.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m honored, of course, but I don’t play an instrument. Actually, I’m an unemployed talk show host, so what would I do at your show?’ And he said, and I’m quoting now, ‘You will figure it out, and you will like it.'”
“So that was two months ago. And I woke up this morning, and I thought, I gotta go to Gonzales, Louisiana, and open up for Kid Rock. What am I gonna say? And I had no idea until I got here,” the former Fox News host confessed.
Recounting how even he grew depressed looking at the news circulating online, Carlson pivoted to what was real before sharing an anecdote from the venue where he’d been drawn to a lighting rig he spotted in the shape of a cross, “A shape I like.”
“As I’m walking out,” he told the audience about approaching it, “this chick gets right in my face. She’s got two nose rings, a cross necklace and a Trump bracelet. And she looks at me right in the face, and she goes, ‘Ahhhh!’ And she said, ‘I love you.’ And I said, ‘I love you, too.’ And I meant it. And I thought, that’s the America that I know. A little weird, slightly crazy, full of love, and beautiful. And that describes the man I’m here to introduce.”
As the small-town tour was set to continue through the end of July with stops in Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Missouri and South Carolina, Carlson’s opening act touched on the many who had traveled from far away like himself to participate, and at considerable costs before asking, “Can you put a price on living free in the last free country?”
“So let me tell you, my fellow Americans, what we’ve got. All gathered here tonight are free people united by our love of country and under God,” he suggested as a pulsing chord was struck to build anticipation. “And in the name of that country and that God, we’re here to celebrate a party that will not stop. And so, as I know you can, please be as noisy and disobedient as possible for Kid f*ckin’ Rock.”
Ritchie had also reacted to the high-energy crowd as he shared footage taken from the stage of the festival showing thousands singing along to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” with the caption, “Woke up to this…First night of ‘Rock the Country’ — GOOSEBUMPS!! So pumped to perform tonight!”

As Carlson’s remarks went viral, social media users sounded off with many supporting the grounded perspective that looked beyond what corporate-backed talking heads were peddling.
He is right! If you listen to the internet, everyday should be awful. Get out in your community, it is not. — MoSmith (@MoSmithHMC) April 7, 2024
That sounds like an amazing experience! It’s incredible how different the online narrative can be from the reality we witness in our own communities. It’s heartwarming to hear that Kid Rock appreciates the beauty of the country and the people in it. — Angel (@AngelAbaji) April 7, 2024
That was freakin awesome lmao — STAY salty. (@saltinesnack) April 7, 2024
