Surfing In Vietnam - The Best Experience No One Should Miss

When & Where to Surf in Vietnam

Jane Pham

Surfing in Vietnam has recently become more and more popular on the windy coasts of the country. With plenty of long stretch beaches featuring breathtaking landscapes, it is ideal to try the activity.

I. Overview about Surfing in Vietnam

Beaches for surfing in Vietnam

Vietnam is a South Eastern country with a long coastline of almost 3000 kilometers . Although the precise origins of surfing remains unknown, it is considered one of the oldest sports on earth. As surfers started traveling around the world and searching for new waves and wonderful spots for the activity, the frontiers of surfing got bigger. It is believed that the story about surfing in Vietnam started in the Vietnam War. Thousands of US soldiers came here for the war. They experienced horrors of the war, but some of them also discovered new waves breaking along the coastline of the country. Whenever they had time, they found their way to try surfing. Many claimed that surfing in Vietnam saved them from stress, homesickness, and drugs.

The war is over, and Vietnam has got their peace. Tourism in the country has significantly developed, which leads to more interesting surfing spots discovered. There are many beaches of different shapes and sizes for various kinds of surfing like kitesurfing and windsurfing. You can easily find surfing items for rent at many spots.

To sum up, there are many reasons why Vietnam is an ideal place to go surfing, but the most noticeable are:

  • Warm weather throughout the year with comfortable water temperature
  • Breathtaking views
  • Strong and reliable wind all year round
  • Various choices of accomodation

II. Best Time for Surfing in Vietnam – When to Surf?

Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate with warm waters all year round. The best time for surfing in Vietnam lasts from November to March . During this time, the typhoon often occurs, bringing high waves which is ideal for surfing. Also, the temperature hovers between 25 C (dry season) and 30 C (wet season).

III. 6 Best Places to Go Surfing in Vietnam – Where to Surf?

A long coastline offers plenty of surfing places in Vietnam. But, which ones are the best? Let’s check the below list for the most favorite destinations by experienced surfers:

1. Vung Tau

Vung Tau beach club

Vung Tau is one among the most popular surfing destinations in Vietnam. Just 90 kms from the busy Ho Chi Minh city, it provides a great weekend getaway for both locals and foreign tourists. The whole long beach is surfable. But, we highly recommend surfing at the back beach instead of the front beach. Many experienced tourists say that the back one is the best spot in the whole country. Stretching over 3 kms, it has numerous unnamed and unsurfed breaks. Most importantly, the waves are powerful and suitable for every surfing level.

The best time for surfing here is mornings of winter when the tide is low and the wind is not so strong. On this beach, you also can try kitesurfing when there is strong wind. If you are looking for professional surfing and kite surfing experience, you can head to Vung Tau Beach Club in the center of the back beach. It is quite easy to spot them to hire surfing items or join some paddle boarding classes.

Where to surf in Vung Tau: Back Beach, Vung Tau Beach Club

2. Nha Trang

Surfing in Nha Trang Vietnam

For a long time, Nha Trang has become a favorite destination for many beautiful beaches stretching more than 7 kms. Apart from swimming, many tourists enjoy surfing – the sport that goes under the radar in the country. But, there are a lot of good spots for surfing in this central coastal area. From October to April, typhoons in Philippines bring storms for the coast in Nha Trang, causing nice swells which attracts many surf enthusiasts in Vietnam and other countries to the beach.

There are 3 main surfing spots in Nha Trang: Bai Dai (Long Beach), the City Reef, and the Dark Reef. The 5 km sandy shore of Long Beach is perfect for beginner surfers while the City Reef is more suitable for both beginners and more advanced surfers. The Dark Reef is famous for nice rights and lefts, ideal for advanced surfers. Here, you need to paddle about 300 meters from the shore to catch the best waves. However, there are always available boat transfers. And, remember to check the weather forecast before as it is not safe during low tide. In some spots of Nha Trang, you also can find high swells of over 3 meters, which may attract professional surfers.

Where to go surfing in Nha Trang: Bai Dai beach, Khanh Hoa (Dark Reef – a break between Bai Dai and city center), Hon Chong.

Danang surfing

Since the beginning of 2019, surfing has become more and more popular in Danang with more than 10 commercial establishments related to surfing. They offer surf lessons, surfboard rentals, nice restaurants and bars. With this, there is a remarkable increase in the number of surfers visiting Danang to have surfing experience. The warm climate and long stretches of beach with beautiful waves make Danang one of the must-go surfing places in Vietnam.

The season for this activity is between September and March when the water temperature is pleasant, just around 27 degrees Celsius. There are several surfing spots in Danang, but the most ideal one is My Khe beach which is also known as China Beach. Stretching 30 kms from the center of Danang, it is a popular destination for expat surfers and is getting its popularity among the locals also. The beach is most suitable for beginners. If you are a thrill seeker, don’t hesitate to head to Non Nuoc Beach and Nam O Point where high-quality waves are waiting for you.

Where to go surfing in Danang: My Khe beach, Non Nuoc beach, and Nam O beach.

kite surfing in Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a true paradise for not only surfing but also kite surfing . Long beaches, crystal clear water, fine sand, fresh seafood, abundant tropical fruits, you can find all these in Mui Ne. Kite surfing was introduced into the country 15 years ago and Mui Ne beach is still the most interesting place to try this activity thanks to ideal wind conditions. It will bring you a brand new experience from normal surfing. You will surf with additional colorful kites, utilize the wind to surf on or even fly out of the water, sometimes you can also try aerobatics to enjoy a strong feeling of conquering nature. Sounds amazing, right?

The weather in Mui Ne is unique as it is made up of sand hills. The rainy season may not affect your travel plan for surfing. Its average daily temperature usually fluctuates between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius. The area has a charming scenery and breathtaking landscapes with no skyscrapers, making it a wonderful escape from hustle and bustle cities. In the daytime, the sky is full of colorful kites flowing in the wind. This picture gives tourists a feeling of peace and helps to release stress. If you are a beginner, you can start by joining some kitesurfing schools offered by most resorts in front of Mui Ne beach. The price is only around USD 100 to 300.

Where to surf in Mui Ne: Little Buddha, Ham Tien, Suoi Nuoc and Malibu.

5. Phu Quy Island

Phu Quy island is about 6 hours by ferry off the coast of Phan Thiet – Mui Ne. This stunning island is relatively isolated from the chaos and speed of the mainland. With the surrounding reef and clear blue water, this place is ideal for surfers to venture to with a surfboard.

However, in comparison with other places, this island is not easy to get to. It is necessary to apply for an allowance to visit the island prior to departing from the mainland of Phan Thiet. A ferry ride may take from 3 to 7 hours.

Besides, since wind and waves on this small island always go hand in hand, so this may be the most suitable place for those surfers who like to combine surfing with windsurfing or kiteboarding.

Where to surf in Phu Quy island: Skate Park, East Coast.

6. Phan Rang

Have you ever heard about Phan Rang for surfing? If no, then it is time to catch up. Situated in the South of Vietnam, Phan Rang is becoming one of the hottest kiteboarding sites thanks to its long jagged coastline surrounded by reef. Without a doubt, the place is among the best places for surfing in Vietnam.

Where to go surfing in Phan Rang: Nui Chua National Park, Binh Tien

III. Tips for Surfing in Vietnam

Here are some tips from experienced surfers in Vietnam:

  • Vietnam is not only a place for surfing, you can try many other adventure activities also.
  • It is essential to check the season for surfing in Vietnam. You may catch nice swells occasionally and they might be too high during peak seasons, so be aware.
  • For those who want to explore off-the-beaten-track destinations , it is advisable to rent a van and bring your surfboard. Though it is expensive, it is the most convenient way.
  • Ask for advice from locals to find hidden surf spots. Their hands on experience will surely give you some hidden gems.

IV. FAQ for Vietnam Surfing

The south central coastline facing out the East Sea has the most favorable conditions for surfing in Vietnam. Head to far north, waves are blocked by Taiwan and Hainan, while going to far south, there is very little wave activity since it is close to the Gulf of Thailand.

Though waves for surfing are available in Vietnam throughout the year, the time during the southwest summer monsoon from October to April is the best time for surfing.

It is easy to get a Vietnam visa . The easiest way to do is applying for an e-visa (just available for some specific countries) or Vietnam visa on arrival online in advance. But, be noticed that there are 24 countries of which the citizens do not have to apply for a visa to Vietnam.

Surfing in Vietnam is truly a must-try activity when visiting the country. It is a great chance for you to relax, unwind, and conquer the beauty of Vietnam’s beaches. Apart from surfing, you also can try more creational activities like kite surfing. If you have any fun moments with surfing in Vietnam, don’t forget to share with us.

4. Vung Tau, for easy access from Ho Chi Minh City

5. Bình An, Hue, for beginner surfers

Natural Feature

Built around the crumbling Forbidden Purple City of the ancient Nguyen dynasty, and set on the banks of the Perfume River, Hue is a Vietnam must-see. The surrounding countryside is dotted with ancient temples and tombs, many of them set in scented, bird-filled gardens. Golden beaches run south from here, many of them known to few tourists. The fishing village of Bình An stands on a long, curving bay of sand between a forest-covered cape and the mouth of the vast Dam Cau Hai lagoon. With gentle waves suitable for surfers still struggling to stand, it’s a beginner’s beach to practise on before heading over the mountains, to the bigger breaks around Danang, some 40 minutes away. The water is warm enough to enter without a wetsuit outside the peak domestic tourism season (late July to late August), and the beach is usually empty. It rains heavily here between September and December.

6. Cửa Đại, Hoi An, for its location near the city

Hoi An town is enchanting: a place full of mindful moments in temples covered with pink and blue tiles and crowned with sinuous dragon-serpents. Wandering the narrow streets, you’ll spy terracotta-topped cottages painted in ochres and warm yellows. The slow river, lit with lanterns, makes for dreamy gondola rides past covered bridges and quayside restaurants. It’s one of the best places in Southeast Asia for souvenir shopping – with markets packed with leather and ceramics, and dozens of shops selling made-to-measure suits and shoes. And it’s by the beach. To surf, head for Cửa Đại, an exposed beach break with left- and right-handers, barely 10 minutes from the town centre. Shacks sell snacks and the sand is palm-shaded, but on warm, calm days it can get crowded. The best surf is in the low season between December and March (which can be wet). Just be sure to avoid the busy Tet (Chinese New Year) long weekend.

7. Lăng Cô, Danang, for a quiet surfing getaway

A long stretch of white sandy at Lang Co Beach, with hills in the background

When the Americans landed at China Beach at the beginning of the Vietnam War, there was nothing here. Now there’s a city: Danang. Cable cars ferry thousands of tourists daily into the formerly wild, forested mountains, now home to a Disney-style resort devoted to Vietnamese culture – you may have seen its famous Golden Bridge held between giant outstretched hands. Corporate towers cluster the city centre and legions of resort hotels line the sand. Lăng Cô is a few kilometres north, but it’s separated from the hurly-burly by a mountain ridge. For the moment it’s relatively free of big development. And the beach is gorgeous, as wide as a football field, and stretching for some 10km (6mi) between a sheltered lagoon and the open sea. The sand is silk-soft and cotton-white. Waves vary depending on the swell, but can be massive in the late summer and winter when storms hit the South China Sea.

a guide to surfing in Vietnam Mui Ne

A guide to Surfing in Vietnam

Curious about where you can surf in Vietnam? This guide is for you! This post shares the culture of surfing in Vietnam, where to learn, the best places to surf and where to rent boards.

After getting my first taster of surfing, I knew I was hooked. Living in Ho Chi Minh City , I have to travel to surf so I’ve been taking trips around Vietnam to different surf spots where I can practice and play in the waves! This guide is the culmination of my findings, including where to learn to surf, the best surfing spots in Vietnam and recommended board rentals across the country.

➡️ The history of surfing in Vietnam ➡️ Surf season in Vietnam ➡️ Learning to surf in Vietnam

➡️ Mui Ne Local Surf

➡️ Best surfing in Vietnam

1️⃣ Mui Ne 2️⃣ Phan Rang 3️⃣ Cam Rang 4️⃣ Da Nang 5️⃣ Vung Tau

The History of Surfing in Vietnam

Surfing came to the shores of Vietnam in the 1960s and 70s, in the midst of the war. For some of the American soldiers stationed in Vietnam, the expansive coastline with surfable waves offered an escape from the trauma of the front lines.

With so many beach destinations, it wasn’t long before surf tourism arrived and nowadays there are surf schools and board rentals up and down the coast.

When is the surf season in Vietnam?

The best time of year for surfing in Vietnam is typically in the winter monsoon season, from November to March when storms bring swells. Whether you ride shortboard or longboard, there are waves in Vietnam for you during winter. Beginner surfers can find waves during the summer too, but experienced surfers will likely be disappointed by the summer swells in Vietnam.

The best surf is normally early morning, just after sunrise, and late afternoon into the sunset (might vary slightly with the tides).

I recommend the website Surf Forecast to check the surf reports in Vietnam (I’ve linked the relevant reports next to each location for you to click through).

Surfing conditions in Vietnam

Vietnam has warm tropical waters that don’t require wetsuits. You can comfortably surf in swimwear with rash guards. If you don’t have rash guards, most rental companies that I mention throughout the post can provide them with rentals.

Most of the surfing spots in Vietnam are beach breaks, so there isn’t too much paddling involved and no reef to be wary of.

Learning to surf in Vietnam

While there are many places to surf in Vietnam, the surfing hub of Mui Ne is the best place to learn with shore breaks that are easy to navigate for beginners and learners.

Lessons with Mui Ne Local Surf

I started surfing with a lesson from the guys at Mui Ne Local Surf . During the course of an afternoon, I went from complete beginner to catching waves on my own; a satisfying achievement for my first time surfing.

Starting on land and progressing into the water, the lesson covered everything from paddling and popping up, to surfers etiquette and safety. It was so comprehensive that I left the water feeling confident that I could continue practicing on my own!

💰 $25 group lesson / $35 for a private lesson

The best surfing in Vietnam

The southern Vietnamese beach destination of Mui Ne, Phan Rang and Cam Ranh (near Nha Trang) are the most popular places for surfing in Vietnam. Da Nang and Vung Tau are also known for surfing, with long sandy beachfronts.

1️⃣ Surfing in Mui Ne

Mui Ne is the epicentre of the surf community in Vietnam, with the most surf schools to choose from and reliable swells during the winter months. The most popular beaches for surfing in Mui Ne are Buddha Beach and Malibu Beach. The long stretch of beach that lines the Mui Ne coast is perfect for kiteflying.

🌊 Check the surf report for Mui Ne here .

Surfboard rental in Mui Ne

Surf tourism is big in Mui Ne and there is no shortage of surf schools and board rentals, as well as stores where you can buy suits and boards. I personally recommend board rentals and lessons from Mui Ne Local Surf , who will tell you which beaches have the best surf and meet you there with boards.

💰 160k/hr ($7)

For more information on planning a trip to Mui Ne, check out my Travel Guide to Mui Ne .

2️⃣ Surfing in Phan Rang

North of Mui Ne is Phan Rang, renowned as one of the best places to kitesurf in Vietnam. Phan Rang has beach breaks for surfing but as the area is more off the beaten path I would only recommend a trip here if surfing is the sole purpose (you won’t find other activities to keep you entertained).

Vietnam Surf Camping offer rentals and onsite accommodation for surfers in cute cabins or beach tents. We haven’t made it for a weekend here yet, but my friends in Mui Ne rave about it.

3️⃣ Surfing in Cam Ranh

The main beachfront in Nha Trang doesn’t have surf but venture south of the city, towards the airport, and you find Cam Ranh. Bai Dai beach is the main surfing beach in Cam Ranh, with a peninsula break in the northern corner of the bay. This is where the surf schools in Nha Trang do their lessons and rentals.

🌊 Check the surf report for Bai Dai beach here .

Surfboard rental in Cam Ranh

For board rentals and lessons in Cam Ranh, try  Nha Trang Local Surf School or Single Fin Surf School . Both offer lessons in English and board rentals at Bai Dai beach.

4️⃣ Surfing in Da Nang

Noted as one of the first popular places for surfing in Vietnam, the Da Nang area has many beaches to surf at. Some of the most popular surf spots are at Nam O Beach, My Khe beach, and Lang Co beach. It was My Khe beach, called China beach by American soldiers, where G.Is would surf during their R&R.

🌊 Check the surf report for all beaches in Da Nang here .

Surfboard rental in Da Nang

Da Nang Surf School and Surf Shack offer rentals and lessons in Da Nang, nearby My Khe beach. Surf Shack also offers tours to the surf beaches outside of the city, with transportation and rentals included.

For more information on planning a trip to Da Nang, check out my Travel Guide to Da Nang .

5️⃣ Surfing in Vung Tau

Back Beach in Vung Tau is perfect for both surfing and kitesurfing, with an expanse of sand and strong ocean winds. There have been a few surf competitions held here and the winter waves can be great!

🌊 Check the surf report for Vung Tau here.

Surfboard Rental in Vung Tau

For board rentals, go to Beach Club Surf Station on Back Beach. The owner wasn’t as welcoming as the community we have grown to love in Mui Ne, but the boards we rented were good.

There you have it – the best surfing spots in Vietnam and where to rent surfboards from! There are a few other places along the coast from Mui Ne to Nha Trang, but these are the easiest to visit during a trip to Vietnam!

Surfing in Vietnam : Top 6 Surfing Spots for All Travelers!

Surfing in Vietnam : Top 6 Surfing Spots for All Travelers!

Planning to catch a wave or two in Vietnam but don't know where to start? Whether you're a pro who rarely gets wiped out or a newbie frothing to take your board out, there are surfing options in the country that will definitely get you stoked!

surf trip vietnam

Nicole is a freelance writer who considers herself a walking paradox. While she requires order and organization in her personal life, she gets a natural high from booking spontaneous trips and saying yes to last-minute plans. When she's not writing about travel, Nicole spends her time learning about film photography, watching Asian TV shows, and familiarizing herself with foreign languages.

Oh, Vietnam! From its sprawling greens up north, its  bustling nightlife  from north to south, and its mouthwatering dishes from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam sure has something in store for everyone.

With its history dating back thousands of years, Vietnam has since developed into one of the most well-loved destinations for travelers journeying through Southeast Asia.

If you happen to be searching for some good spots to ride the waves while down in Vietnam, you've come to the right place! I rounded up some of the best spots where you can surf in the country, along with a few tips and tricks that might come in handy for you.

Is Vietnam Good For Surfing?

When it comes to surfing in Asia, one would think of places like Thailand, the Philippines, or Indonesia. However,  Vietnam is known for  a lot of other things, including its bustling surfing scene. With a coastline spanning more than 3000 km, you'll find a good surfing spot or 2 in the country.

Surfing in the county has come a long way since it first graced the Vietnamese waves as a way for American soldiers to relax during the war.

Now, with several surfing schools and communities across the country, the surfer in you will find a home on Vietnamese shores.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

As an S-shaped country located on the border of what was once called Indochina, Vietnam's climate varies from south to north throughout the year.

With its diverse topography, you can experience anything, from snowy winters to sweltering heat, depending on where you are at a certain time of the year.

In general, it's always a good time to visit any region of the country during its dry season. If you want to visit Saigon, the best time is between December to April.

For Central Vietnam, you can choose any day between March to May. And finally, for the northern cities with 4 seasons, you can book a flight either during the autumn or spring seasons.

It's safe to say that Vietnam is an all-year-round destination, depending on your type of adventure. So, if you're looking to spend a  few days in Vietnam , it's best to start planning now so you can map out where to go for every season.

Best Time to Surf in Vietnam

For the Vietnam surf season, it's generally favorable for surfers to visit Vietnam from November to March, during which typhoons usually occur in the country.

The weather brings in high waves, which are perfect for this extreme activity. As for the temperature, it's usually pretty warm in Vietnam, so you never have to worry about freezing in the waters.

Where Is the Best Place to Surf?

There are a handful of coastal areas to choose from, depending on where you are in the country. Here's a quick rundown of the most famous surf spots in Vietnam.

Doing a quick search in the history of surfing in Vietnam, you'll find Da Nang as one of the top places where this pastime was born.

At the time of the war, many soldiers rode the waves of what is now known as the city's My Khe beach to release stress during the conflict.

These days, Da Nang remains one of the top surfing spots in Vietnam. You'll find that a lot of surfers enjoy Non Nuoc Beach as well as Nam O Point, where they say you'll find some of the best waves in the country.

Surfers On The Da Nang Beach

A coastal town located in the country's southern region, Mui Ne is famous for its white dunes.

Thanks to its windy weather, with waves coming up to 3 m on a good day, this city has become popular as a surfing and kitesurfing beach paradise.

If you're ever around Mui Ne, you can find both local and foreign surfers down by popular spots like the Little Buddha Surf Spot, Malibu, Hon Rom Beach, or Suoi Nuoc.

4. Nha Trang

For some steady waves any time of the year, head on over to Nha Trang. If you're an experienced surfer, you'll enjoy Bai Dai Beach, City Reef, and Dark Reef the most during typhoon season. If you're a newbie at the sport, the smaller waves during off-season periods will be perfect for you.

On top of being a surf town, the city is known as a luxurious getaway and seafood haven, on top of being a surf town. Talk about being the ideal seaside getaway!

3. Phan Rang

Ninh Thuan may not be familiar to most tourists, even to those who have already been to the country more than once. Still, that doesn't get in the way of Phan Rang establishing itself as a name in the Vietnam surfing community.

The province's capital boasts of long white sandy beaches with countless surf spots suitable for every surfer. Among the most note-worthy sports are Nui Chua National Park and Ninh Chu Bay Beach.

If you're looking for a quiet place where you can just enjoy riding your board in peace, Phu Quy might be the best spot for you.

Located more than 4 hours off the coast of Mui Ne, this island is perfect for Vietnam surfers who enjoy living the island life away from the crowd.

As of September 2020, foreign travelers to the "island of the riches" are no longer required to register before visiting. To ride its waves and enjoy its small island beauty, you'll need to ride a speedboat to get there.

1. Vung Tau

Vung Tau is the easiest to get to if you come straight out of Tan Son Nhat Airport. This coastal area, just 90 km outside of Ho Chi Minh City, is one of the most visited surfing spots in the south. The waves hit around the 1-2 m mark, but can still be calm enough for beginners to explore.

The best time to arrange some surfing plans to this southern city is around winter time.

Tips and Tricks

To make sure you have the best time surfing in Vietnam, here are a few tips and tricks that might be useful for you:

Get in Touch With the Local Surfing Community

It's probably one of the oldest tricks in the books when traveling – to get out there and mingle with the locals.

The same principle can be applied to surfing as well! By interacting with the local surfers, you'll be able to get a good idea of when a great surfing day would be, and you'll also enjoy the vibe so much more!

Here are a few local surfing schools and communities you might what to get in touch with:

  • Nha Trang Surf School
  • Da Nang Surf School
  • Mui Ne Local Surf School
  • Vietnam Surf Soul
  • Surfpoint Vietnam
  • Vietnam Surf Camping

Don't Have a Surfboard? Get a Custom-Made One

It's not every day that you have to remember to pack your surfing board with you, together with the long list of items in your  beach packing list .

If you ever find yourself spontaneously booking a trip to Vietnam to surf, there are options for you to get your hands on a board ASAP!

Local stores like  Surf Shack VN  in Da Nang offer a variety of boards, along with other surfing gear to suit your needs.

If you're more into getting a board that's tailor-fit just for you, you can contact the legendary  Mr. Quoc of Mui Ne  to make you a one-of-a-kind surfboard in the country.

Check the Weather Before Setting Sail

Like most countries, the weather in Vietnam can change with the snap of a finger. To make sure you're getting the most out of your surfing trip, it's best to check surf forecasting websites.

You can get a pulse on the current wave conditions to see if it's up to what you're expecting to ride that day.

A Guide to Surfing in Vietnam

surf trip vietnam

Although the precise origins of surfing are unknown, it is one of the oldest sports still practised on earth. Fossil records, geological excavation, and carvings from prehistoric periods dating back as long as 5,000 years ago in Chan Chan, Peru, show that it is not a new thing.

As intrepid surfers began venturing around the world in search of new waves, the frontiers of surfing expanded. Asia unexpectedly became the epicentre of surfing when perfect surf was discovered in Bali, Indonesia in the 1970s. The film Morning of the Earth captures the essence of early surf exploration.

Around the same time as explorers were venturing to Bali, the Vietnam war was in full swing a few thousand miles due north. Despite the horrors they experienced, a few US soldiers discovered that there were waves breaking along the Vietnamese shoreline. As all surfers do, they took the opportunity to go surfing whenever they could. Many of the soldiers claim that surfing in Vietnam saved them from drugs and future stress disorders.

Vietnam as a destination

Vietnam is a beautiful country on the eastern side of the Indian Chinese Peninsula. The country is shaped like the letter S, featuring a coastline of about 3000 kilometres. Beaches of all shapes and sizes accommodate surfing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing, all of which are significant contributors to the tourism sector of the country.

The weather is warm all year round, the locals are amiable, and accommodation is affordable. Vietnamese food is also world-famous for its diversity and flavour.

Pho bo (beef soup with rice noodles) in a local restaurant is not to be missed. Vietnamese coffee is also a delicacy – thick condensed milk served with coffee and ice!

When is the best time for surfing in Vietnam?

For the best surf experience in Vietnam, aim for the winter monsoon, usually between November and December. Around this time, typhoons develop, and they create both localised and long-range swells across the South China Sea.

Since the weather and the water is warm all year round, you won’t be needing a wetsuit.

Interest in surfing in Vietnam was revived when Dion Agius and Mike Losness ventured there in the Taylor Steele movie Castles in the Sky .

Vietnam travel visas

Having travelled to Vietnam on an Australian passport I can testify that entering is a relatively easy process. In 2017, the government of Vietnam introduced what it called the Vietnam E-visa. The E-visa allows its holder a maximum stay of 30 days in Vietnam, and it is received via the internet.

With a valid E-visa, foreigners can reduce the amount of time wasted upon arrival. This visa type is available for people travelling for tourism, study, investment, business, journalism, and so much more.

To obtain the Vietnam online visa, you have to be a citizen of the Vietnam E-visa eligible countries.

If you are eligible for an E-visa, you will need to submit the following documents:

  • A valid passport with at least six months validity from the date of arrival in Vietnam
  • Image of the Biography page of your passport
  • A passport standard photograph
  • The intended address you wish to stay in Vietnam
  • E-visa application fee, payable via debit or credit card
  • A valid email address

Travellers are required to print out a copy of the E-visa upon approval. The E-visa is accepted at all airports as well as borders in Vietnam.

If you are not eligible, you will need to visit or call a Vietnamese embassy.

Getting to Vietnam

There are two main entry points into Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. As a surfer, you’ll want to be further south because the coast of Hanoi is protected from swell by the island of Hainan – which happens to be the centre of the rapidly growing Chinese surf scene.

Further south, around Da Nang you’ll find a range of spots. Check the local surf conditions on Magic Seaweed. As you venture past Da Nang towards Nha Trang and beyond there is excellent potential to find reef and beach breaks when a suitable swell arrives.

Best four places to surf in Vietnam

When it comes to choosing a base for surf exploration in a foreign country it helps to first stay in a traveller-friendly destination. Start with these and when you’re confident, venture off the beaten path.

Vung Tau is just a two-hour road trip from Ho Chi Minh city. It is situated on an exposed peninsula beyond the mouth of the Mekong River.

Vung Tau is blessed with long sandy beaches and surf clubs that rank amongst Vietnam’s best. It is the perfect location for people seeking out a gentle surfing experience, particularly beginners. Waves can reach 2 meters occasionally but you’ll probably be best arriving with low expectations and a board suitable for small waves.

Stay at the Hotel Hoai Anh for ocean views.

surf trip vietnam

An economic/cultural hub along with its beautiful beach, Nha Trang has earned for itself the name “Gem of the East Sea.” The beach, shaped like the half-moon, is about 7 kilometers in length and is located in the middle of the city. It hosts tourists who come in to explore all the different spots available for surfing.

Usually, the waves here in Nha Trang are gentle with large swells occurring occasionally. It makes the beach perfect for experts and beginners alike.

Check out the Nha Trang surf report . The Lucky Sun Hotel has spectacular ocean views for those wanting to check the surf from the comfort of your room.

My Khe Beach

My Khe beach, or the China beach, is regarded as the most famous surfing area in the whole of Vietnam and deserves its own mention. Just across the bridge from Da Nang, the sandy beach stretches a total of 30km, with plenty of eating places and bars available for rest and recovery after a day at the beach.

The area has a variety of golf courses, resorts, restaurants, and private villas. Yoga, spa, massage and many other therapies are available, making this a perfect family and couples destination.

This is the place where soldiers came to rest, escape the war and catch a few waves. Consequently, a unique surf culture was born when the locals joined in.

To enjoy the best surf experience in My Khe Beach, schedule a visit between May and October. Large wind swells can be surfed all year round.

Check out the My Khe surf report . If you have the budget you can’t beat staying in the HAIAN Beach Hotel & Spa which has ocean views and a rooftop infinity pool.

surf trip vietnam

The Da Nang area is a great base for surf exploration. North of the city you’ll find Nam O Point in a long arcing bay. You have the relatively exposed Lang Co to the north and the whole of China Beach to the south.

The Da Nang Surf School offers classes to newbies, and the classes are reputed to be of international quality.

Da Nang surf conditions can often include wind swell and can change rapidly based on weather conditions. To avoid disappointment bring a fun board and don’t expect perfection. But you never know if you don’t go!

In the right swell, you might like to surf the little stretch of sand in front of the Intercontinental . What a place to stay – even if the waves are flat.

surf trip vietnam

While surfing in Vietnam can be fickle, it certainly remains a valid option for surfers wanting to escape the crowds and explore a rich and friendly culture.

Be prepared to enjoy other activities such as hiking, kitesurfing, or simply chilling out, and you may just score a few epic waves along the way.

At Nha Trang, you can surf at Tran Phu Beach in the heart of the city. You do not need to buy surfboards, there are also cheap surfboard rental services for tourists. I used to hire 2 hours to surf and hire a coach. https://nhatrangtoday.vn/tour-du-lich-nha-trang

Curious about surfing in Vietnam?

Read up on the best waves around the country (and when to score them!)

If you read our monster guide to surfing in Asia , you’ll already know that we’re pretty bonkers about the big ‘Nam. Now, windsurfing and kitesurfing has been big in Vietnam for close to two decades, but surfing in Vietnam is still cruising way under most people’s radar.

Vietnam’s massive tourism boom has yet to spill over into surf tourism, but the country has all the makings of an A1 surfing destination:

  • Dreamy, empty line ups
  • year-round warm weather (no wetsuits needed)
  • Cheap cost of living
  • Totally gorgeous scenery
  • Super welcoming locals

And there’s more than that:

To me, surfing in Vietnam holds an appeal because it’s so reminiscent of the old school soul surfer days.

Outside of the major cities, the country is still pretty undeveloped.

The most beautiful surf spots still lack decent road access.

There aren’t yet any laws that forbid surfing on certain beaches — or even in the protected national parks (more on that later).

There’s still a real sense of freedom when it comes to living, traveling, and riding the waves in Vietnam.

Getting a visa for your vietnam surf trip.

Securing a visa for Vietnam is pretty simple. The easiest way to do it is by applying for an e-visa (or e-visa on arrival) online in advance. You’ll get the papers you need to collect your physical visa at the airport when you fly in, before passing through immigration.

We highly recommend using iVisa.com to get your Vietnam visa . They give the clearest, most up-to-date info on prices, processing time, and the steps you need to take to get your visa. Other websites can make it seem so much more complicated than it is!

Also, be aware that citizens of 24 countries are eligible for visa-free travel in Vietnam for a fixed period of time.

Plan your trip

Ready to start planning and budgeting your trip? Use Kayak to find and compare the best deals from all over the web on flights, hotels, and car rentals. When you do a search on Kayak, it pulls data from hundreds of travel booking platforms to offer you the best prices available, so you know you’re always optimizing your budget to the max.

For local public transport in-country, like buses & minivans, taxis, trains, and even ferries, we recommend using Bookaway , which works the same way. Bookaway is especially useful in countries where small local operators don’t necessarily speak English or even have a website at all. They also offer 24/7 support in case anything goes wrong.

Book activities

Want to start browsing and booking activities available at your destination? Nowadays there are a few booking platforms specialized in outdoor adventures and active holidays worldwide. We recommend Tripaneer for yoga and meditation retreats, surfing and kitesurfing camps , cycling holidays, or motorcycle tours.

Tripaneer focuses mostly on week-long holidays often including accommodation, while Manawa also lists daily and hourly activities including every action sport you can imagine but also a lot of crazy stuff like shark diving, survival training, zip-lining, or even reindeer sledding!

For traditional guided tours, day trips, and local experiences like cooking classes, GetYourGuide is everyone’s go-to platform and features an insane amount of authentic reviews to help you make a decision. They also list more mainstream outdoor activities like diving courses, guided hikes, kayaking excursions and so on.

Travel insurance that covers surfing

Finding serious travel insurance that covers surfing and other extreme sports isn’t easy, that’s why we recommend World Nomads , a simple and flexible insurance company run by an international team of adventurous travelers since 2002. Fill up the form below and once on the website, just add the activity or activities you’ll be doing and get a quote perfectly tailored to your trip.

From physical injuries and medical repatriation to dental emergencies, stolen passports, damaged gear by airline companies, trip cancellation, or even pregnancy complications, they’ve planned it all. You can even sign up for a policy after you started your trip. For a list of recommended travel vaccines and Covid country-specific information, head to the CDC’s travel page .

From south to north, here are 10 spots (with 20 awesome breaks between them!) that we think are worth knowing about:

Top spots for surfing in Vietnam

A favoured weekend haunt for Ho Chi Minh-ers (since it’s the closest beach to the city), Vung Tau is a seaside town with a few choice bars, a growing party scene, and a long sandy beach which is home to one of Vietnam’s most established surf clubs, Vung Tau Beach Club.

Voir cette publication sur Instagram Une publication partagée par Vung Tau Beach Club (@vungtaubeachclub) le 8 Févr. 2018 à 10 :18 PST

This is Vung Tau’s numero uno surf spot. It’s a sand bottom beach break that offers a short, gentle ride that’s best suited to beginners, SUP surfers, and longboarders.

October-April is surfable, with waves typically measuring in around the 1 meter mark. The onshore wind from the northeast monsoon can blow things out a little bit, but if you catch the right day during the summer season, you might get treated to some clean 2 meter waves.

Head 90 km up the coastline (if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s a damn fun drive on a motorbike) and you’ll hit La Gi; a quiet, rural area known for its interesting hikes, gigantic lying Buddha statue, and cooler-than-cool beachside getaway, Coco Beach Camp.

Coco Beach Camp is a collection of colourful beach shacks, glamping tents, and bungalows plonked right on the edge of the sand. To say it’s quirky is an understatement; the site is surrounded by gardens stockpiled with upcycled artwork, sculptures, and even repurposed vintage cars.

In front of the resort, there’s a long stretch of sandy beachfront that receives moderate wind swell during the northeast monsoon (Nov-April). The waves here aren’t huge, but they can still be plenty of fun for anybody who values an empty lineup and an awesome, offbeat place to pop a few beers after your session.

The next cape up from La Gi, Ke Ga is best known for its iconic lighthouse perched on an offshore island. The walk around the lighthouse is pretty cool in itself if you’re looking for a nice daytime activity; but surrounded by white sandy beaches, Ke Ga also receives some pretty groovy swell for longboarding.

Surfing in Ke Ga is one for the adventurous (and prepared), since there’s nowhere to rent boards from and little in the way of a well-trodden path to the breaks.

The surfable section of the beach starts just before the lighthouse and ends just after, and works best from November-March when the northeast monsoon is at its peak. You could surf Ke Ge Cape in the summer, too, but only during periods of stormy weather (the swell won’t normally be big enough otherwise).

When the wind blows things out too much, Ke Ga is perfect for wave riding with a kite.

Kitesurfing in front of Ke Ga Lighthouse, Vietnam

Phu Quy Island

6 hours by ferry off the coast of Phan Thiet, Phu Quy is a stunning island that still remains quite isolated from the speed and chaos of the mainland. Surrounded by reef and clear blue water, it’s a dead dreamy spot to venture to with a surfboard.

The only thing to keep in mind is that it’s not an easy place to get to; you’ll need to apply for a permit to visit the island before you depart from Phan Thiet, and then you’re looking at a ferry ride that could take 3-7 hours (it used to be nearly 10- hoorah for small victories!).

WiFi in Phu Quy is nonexistent at worst and spotty at best, and if the seas get rough then your ferry back will be cancelled. In short: don’t come out here unless you’re prepared to unplug from the rest of the world for a while!

Waves and wind on this little island go hand in hand; one is rarely ever seen without the other. With this in mind (and with the little information we have so far about the realities of Phu Quy’s surf) this is probably a place best suited to those who like to combine surfing with kiteboarding or windsurfing, too.

Skate Park is home to a beautiful flat water lagoon which is mostly used by a few local kitesurfers. But far from the shore on either side of the protective reef, 1-2 meter waves break off to the left and right. It’s quite a paddle out- and can get pretty hairy when the wind is blowing strong- so best leave this one to experienced surfers.

The east of Phu Quy Island is well positioned to receive wind swell during both the winter and summer monsoons. Like the rest of the island, the shore is lined with reef and sandy beaches, creating a solid mix of challenging breaks.

A significant part of the coast is lined with large rock slabs which break the waves- which isn’t ideal for beginner surfers (sand bottom beach breaks are much safer). The winter months bring pretty gnarly conditions, with 20-30 knots of wind from the open sea; general consensus so far is that May-September is the best time to surf in Phu Quy.

Mui Ne has long held the crown for Vietnam’s top kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, but little do people know it’s also a pretty bangin’ spot to go with a surfboard.

surfing in Mui Ne, Vietnam

Little Buddha

5 minutes south of town, the surf spot at Little Buddha was an accidental- though ultimately happy- man made creation that came about when they built a sea wall.

The waves that break nearest to the wall are best left to experienced surfers, but further inside the lagoon the wave picks up again and forms some nice easy peelers that are perfect for beginners.

This is the main beach for kitesurfing in Mui Ne, which runs parallel to the town. During the peak windy season, little choppy waves are the norm here- but the messy shore dump and herds of kitesurfers make it less than ideal for surfing.

The best surfing conditions hit Ham Tien between May and September when a storm brews, sending clean waves barrelling (yes, really!) into shore.

10 minutes north of Ham Tien, Malibu is a huge sandy beach with multiple breaks. The spot works best between Oct-May when the wind swell picks up (that cross-on wind really is a blessing and a curse, in this case).

The beach is super massive, and the wave patterns change all along the beach, so take a few minutes to mark out where the best waves are breaking before you hit the water.

Location of choice for Jibe’s annual Sunrise Surf & SUP Competition, Suoi Nuoc is Mui Ne’s primo surf spot across most months of the year. November through April brings the most reliable swell, and even then the line ups are next to empty most days. The biggest and best conditions usually come either side of a big storm. Jibe’s have a second beach club here, as does Vietnam Surf Soul ; hook up with either of them for board rentals and lessons.

If you don’t yet know about Phan Rang , now is the time to catch up:

This quiet little slice of Vietnam’s south is fast becoming one of the hottest kiteboarding locations this side of the globe- but it’s also got huge potential for mountain biking, hiking, and- you guessed it- surfing.

With a long jagged coastline surrounded by reef, Phan Rang has some of the best surfing in Vietnam- without a doubt. There are breaks everywhere- though in the absence of road access, you’ll need to do some Indiana Jones-ing to get to many of them.

The surf community here is small but growing (check out Vietnam Surf Camping for advice, lessons, rental, and some badass ‘glamping’ accommodation options).

Nui Chua National Park

As well as being an amazing spot for hiking (and swimming in hidden rocks pools and waterfalls), the coastal front of Nui Chua offers some of the best conditions for surfing in Vietnam. Check out the wave that breaks in the bay in front of Amanoi Resort; on a big day it can turn into a huge barreling wall of water.

surfing in Phan Rang, Vietnam

40 minutes up the coast from Nui Chua, Binh Tien is one of the local favourites. The main break sits just south of a protective cape, which serves to funnel the waves straight into the bay.

If you had asked someone 10 years ago if there’s any surfing in Vietnam, they probably would have told you to go to Nha Trang. Nowadays, Nha Trang is a pretty wild place (think karaoke bars, cheesy discos, and Russian group holidayers).

Depending on whether you’re one to don a pair of speedos and rock out to some Viet-pop or not will likely factor into how much you’ll enjoy spending time in Nha Trang; but either way, it’s not a bad place to surf.

Bai Dai Beach

The main beach for surfing in Nha Trang is Bai Dai, which, sitting 23 km outside the city center, is home to a bunch of beginner-friendly sand bottom beach breaks. Your best bet is to grab a taxi (which are very affordable in Vietnam) and head straight for The Shack. They’re the guys who’ll sort you out with a board rental, if you need it.

Locally called Dark Reef, this tricky spot sits between Bai Dai and the city center. The break is fickle, and only works well when the wind blows dead west (so summertime is your best bet). When it pumps, the wave can reach 2+ meters- but you’ll have to negotiate your way past some buoys, rocks, and spiky sea urchins to get to it.

Also known as Nha Trang’s City Break, Hon Chong is an easy, beginner-friendly wave that breaks right off the reef in front of the town.

Hoi An is a hodgepodge of Chinese, French, and Vietnamese cultures, and it shows everywhere from the architecture to the town’s most famous trades (like tailoring, for example). It might be best known for its colourful lanterns and Ancient Town, but head for the river mouth and you’ll soon discover Hoi An has a lot more going on than first meets the eye.

Cue Dai Beach

Now, this isn’t the most reliable spot for surfing in Vietnam, by any account. But if you’re planning to include Hoi An in your Vietnam travels anyway, you might find that you can score a surprise session down at Cue Dai.

Cue Dai is a steep beach break which, when it works, builds a swell big enough to rival one of the most famous waves in Da Nang (more on that later). The spot works best from May-October when the southwest wind funnels swell into the coastline.

A mishmash of caves, pagodas, mountains, and metropolis, Da Nang is fast becoming one of Vietnam’s most dynamic cities- and with its own international airport, it’s one of the most convenient places to fly into if you’re hoping to score a quick weekend of surfing in Vietnam.

While you’re there, make sure to do a  day trip to Ba Na Hills  to check out the epic Golden Bridge.

China Beach

Ever since it was famously pictured in that scene in Apocalypse now (damn it, I really thought I’d make it through this article without mentioning that movie!), China Beach  (My Khe in Vietnamese) has been hailed for its long, lazy waves and easy going surf. The shallow beach break is forgiving for beginners, who can take lessons from the local surf clubs like Tam’s Pub and Surf Shop .

Sitting on the same stretch of sand as China Beach, Non Nuoc’s best waves break left and right off a sandbar, and work best during the winter when the windswell picks up. From May-September the wind blows offshore, which creates glassier conditions but only sees the swell build up when a storm is on the horizon.

Nam O easily has the best quality wave to surf in Da Nang. It’s a point break with a long left hander, and works best during the winter season (Nov-April). It’s also worth exploring the coast to the north; there’s a jetty that creates a few clean waves.

Filled with ancient architecture and piles of cultural relics, Vietnam’s ancient capital, Hue, is a must-visit for any history buffs out there. Typically, Hue’s surf isn’t anything to write home about (most surfers in Hue tend to head to Da Nang to get their salt water fix) but Lang Co and Binh An are sometimes worth checking out- especially if you’re short on time.

Where can you find the best surf in Vietnam?

The south central coastline that faces out over the South China Sea (or East Sea, if you’re Vietnamese) offers the best conditions for surfing in Vietnam. Go too far north and the waves get blocked by Hainan and Taiwan, but head too far south and you’re closing in on the Gulf of Thailand, where typically there’s very little wave action.

When is the best time to go surfing in Vietnam?

Even though it misses out on the massive Pacific groundswell, you can find waves to surf in Vietnam almost all year round, since Vietnam’s waves are mainly influenced by storms and wind (of which there are plenty).

October-April offers consistent swell on many beach breaks along the south central coast, during which time the northeast monsoon drives wind over from the Philippines.

You can also go surfing in Vietnam during the southwest summer monsoon, and though the waves are somewhat less reliable, when they do come they’re glassy, clean, and barrelling.

If you are interested in checking those waves let me know! I would add that everyone who lives near or in HCMC the best spot for surfing for begginers and when good swell comes for andvanced surfers too is def Mui Ne..did you know that Mui Ne has around 15 spots for surfing..been there surf there, from longboard dancing sessions to short boards barrels players. Vietnam has a lot to offer for surfing, I was suprised too..now I decided to live here together with my boyfriend who runs Mui Ne local surf school, and we are planning to create some cool surf trips around Vietnam, STAY TUNED.. If you come back stop by to say hello and to join local surf community! BIG LOVE FROM MUI NE LOCAL SURF CREW!

Hi Grace. love your article! I’m taking my family of four (wife and two kids aged 14 and 9) to Vietnam this Christmas (26/12 to 02/01) and was wondering if you had any recommendations for us to experience both Ho Chi Minh City for a couple of days to start, along with some surfing. My son and I are good surfers, wife and daughter beginners. We’re trying to tie in a bit of the city/cultural experience + beach/surfing. Many thanks Warren

Hey Warren! Thanks for your kind words, and I’m so glad you liked the post. Ho Chi Minh should be fun at Christmas time — and hopefully fair-weathered! Definitely check out Saigon Outcast in District 2 (it’s an awesome live music/event venue with an indoor climbing wall and craft beer on tap. Something for all the family!). You can then take the ferry from HCMC to Vung Tau, where you should be able to catch some waves. December is usually pretty windy though so be prepared for cross-on wind and choppy surf. If the conditions aren’t great, I’d definitely recommend trying kitesurfing — December is peak season for kiting in VN!

When and where to surf in Vietnam?

When and where to surf in Vietnam?

  • on Jul 26, 2023       By: BN

Surfing in Vietnam has recently become increasingly popular on the windy coasts of the country. With many long beaches offering breath-taking scenery, it is ideal to try the activity.

1. Overview of surfing in Vietnam

Vietnam is a Southeastern country with a long coastline of nearly 3,000 kilometres. Although the precise origins of surfing remain unknown, it is considered one of the oldest sports on the planet. As surfers began to travel the world and seek out new waves and wonderful spots for activity, the frontiers of surfing expanded. It is believed that the history of surfing in Vietnam began during the Vietnam War. Thousands of American soldiers came there for the war. They experienced the horrors of war, but some of them also discovered new waves breaking along the coasts of the country. Whenever they had time, they found a way to try surfing. Many claimed that surfing in Vietnam saved them from stress, homesickness and drugs.

surf in vietnam, surfing beach, kitesurfing vietnam, windsurfing vietnam, moment surf vietnam

The war is over and Vietnam has achieved peace. Tourism in the country has grown considerably, which leads to the discovery of more interesting surf spots. There are many beaches of different shapes and sizes for different types of surfing like kitesurfing and windsurfing. You can easily find surf gear for rent at many spots.

In summary, there are many reasons why Vietnam is a great place to surf, but the most notable are:

- Warm weather all year round with comfortable water temperature

- Breath-taking views

- Strong and reliable wind all year round

- Various accommodation choices

- Good food

2. Best time to surf in Vietnam

Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate with warm waters all year round. The best time to surf in Vietnam lasts from November to March . During this time, typhoon often occurs, bringing high waves ideal for surfing. Also, the temperature oscillates between 25oC (dry season) and 30oC (wet season).

3. Best places to surf in Vietnam

A long coastline offers many surf spots in Vietnam. But, which are the best? Let's check the list below for favourite destinations for experienced surfers:

3.1. Vung Tau

surf in vietnam, surfing beach, kitesurfing vietnam, windsurfing vietnam, vung tau

Vung Tau is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Vietnam. Just 90 km from a bustling Ho Chi Minh City , it offers a great weekend getaway for locals and foreign tourists. The entire long beach is surfable. But, we strongly recommend that you surf on the back deck instead of the foredeck. Many experienced tourists say that the one behind is the best place in the whole country. More importantly, the waves are powerful and suitable for all levels of surfing.

The best time to surf here is on winter mornings when the tide is low and the wind is not that strong. On this beach, you can also try kitesurfing in strong winds. It is quite easy to rent surf equipment or join paddle lessons.

3.2. Nha Trang

For a long time, Nha Trang has become a favourite destination for many beautiful beaches stretching over 7 km. Besides swimming, many tourists enjoy surfing, a sport that goes under the radar in the country.

But, there are plenty of great surf spots in this central coastal area. From October to April, typhoons in the Philippines bring storms to the coast of Nha Trang, causing beautiful swells that attract many surfers from Vietnam and other countries to the beach.

>> Read more:  Top 10 things to do in Nha Trang

Remember to check the weather forecast before as it is not safe at low tide. In some spots in Nha Trang, you can also find strong swells over 3 metres, which can attract professional surfers.

3.3. Danang

surf in vietnam, surfing beach, kitesurfing vietnam, windsurfing vietnam, danang vietnam, danang beach, danang hoi an

Since early 2019, surfing has become increasingly popular in Danang with more than 10 surf-related business establishments. They offer surf lessons, surfboard rentals, and good restaurants and bars. With this, there is a remarkable increase in the number of surfers visiting Danang to have a surfing experience. The warm climate and long stretches of beach with beautiful waves make Danang one of the must-visit places for surfing in Vietnam.

>> Read more:  What to do and see in 1 or 2 days in Da Nang?

The season for this activity is between September and March when the water temperature is pleasant, just around 27 degrees Celsius. There are several surf spots in Danang, but the most ideal is My Khe Beach. Stretching 30 km from the centre of Danang, it is a popular destination for expatriate surfers and is also gaining popularity among locals. The beach is most suitable for beginners. If you are a thrill seeker, do not hesitate to head to Non Nuoc and Nam O where high-quality waves await you.

3.4. Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a real paradise not only for surfing but also for kitesurfing. Long beaches, crystal clear water, fine sand, fresh seafood, and abundant tropical fruits, you can find it all in Mui Ne. Kitesurfing was introduced to the country 15 years ago and Mui Ne beach remains the most interesting place to try this activity thanks to ideal wind conditions. It will bring you a whole new surfing experience. You will surf with additional colourful kites, use the wind to surf or even fly out of the water, sometimes you can also try aerobatics to enjoy a strong sense of conquering nature. Sounds amazing, right?

surf in vietnam, surfing beach, kitesurfing vietnam, windsurfing vietnam, mui ne vietnam, mui ne phan thiet

The weather in Mui Ne is unique as it is made up of sand hills. The rainy season cannot affect your surfing trip plan. Its average daily temperature usually fluctuates between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius. The area has a charming landscape with no skyscrapers, making it a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

During the day, the sky is full of colourful kites fluttering in the wind. This image gives tourists a sense of peace and helps relieve stress. If you are a beginner, you can start by joining some kitesurfing schools offered by most resorts in front of Mui Ne Beach. The price is only around 100-300 USD.

>> Read more:  Visit Mui Ne in 2 or 3 days: what to do and what to visit?

3.5. Phu Quy Island

Phu Quy Island is about 6 hours by ferry off Phan Thiet Mui Ne. This gorgeous island is relatively isolated from the chaos and speed of the mainland. With the surrounding reef and clear blue water, this place is ideal for surfers who venture there with a surfboard.

However, compared to other places, this island is not easy to access. It is necessary to apply for permission to visit the island before leaving the mainland of Phan Thiet. A ferry ride can take 3 to 7 hours. Moreover, since the wind and the waves on this small island always go hand in hand, it is perhaps the most suitable place for surfers who like to combine surfing with windsurfing or kitesurfing.

3.6. Phan Rang

surf in vietnam, surfing beach, kitesurfing vietnam, windsurfing vietnam, phan rang

Have you ever heard of Phan Rang for surfing? If not, then it's time to catch up. Located in southern Vietnam, Phan Rang is becoming one of the most popular kitesurfing spots thanks to its long, jagged coastline surrounded by reefs. Undoubtedly, the place is among the best places to surf in Vietnam.

4. Tips for surfing in Vietnam

surf in vietnam, surfing beach, kitesurfing vietnam, windsurfing vietnam, vietnam tips for surfing

Here are some tips from experienced surfers in Vietnam:

- Vietnam is not only a place for surfing, you can also try many other adventure activities.

- It is essential to check the season for surfing in Vietnam. You can catch some nice swells from time to time and they can be too high during peak seasons so be aware.

- For those who want to explore destinations off the beaten track, it is advisable to rent a van and bring your surfboard. Although it is expensive, it is the most convenient way.

- Ask the locals for advice on finding hidden surf spots. Their hands-on experience will surely give you some hidden gems.

5. FAQs for surfing in Vietnam

Where to find the best surfing place in Vietnam?

The South-Central coast facing the East Sea offers the most favourable conditions for surfing in Vietnam. Head to the far North, the waves are blocked by Taiwan and Hainan, while to the far South, there is very little wave activity as it is close to the Gulf of Thailand.

When is the best time to surf in Vietnam?

Can you Surf in Vietnam?

Surf in vietnam.

Vietnam has over 2,500km of coast and peppered along it line are some seriously awesome places to surf. Picture a perfect left coming down and empty lineup and a fishing village to stay in and eat and drink with the locals, a right that’s hollow as can be with crystal clear water and a reef underneath 50 meters from a left that is much the same but twice the size and an idyllic beach with freshwater creek to camp.

Might seem like you’re dreaming…..

Either that or you’re on a Surf Trip with LST SURF .  There are many places like this in Vietnam, and at LST we know about and have surfed most of them, and are finding new spots all the time.

As well as all the secret spots around the area there are 3 major surf cities in Vietnam: Danang, Nha Trang, and Mui Ne. Not that you can’t surf in any of the coastal areas, but these 3 cities are the ones that currently have surf communities, shops, schools, etc…  We at LST SURF are based in the city that in our opinion is the best……..Danang (Check out or overview of Surfing in Danang here). come join LST Surf. LST SURF has a lot to offer such as Surf Lessons , Advanced Surf Coaching , Surfboard Rentals , Surfboard Repairs, Custom Surfboards , Guided Surf Trips to the many waves in the area, a skate park , custom surf racks for motorbikes, A bar and Cafe and much more. Stop by and check out our shop at 10 Mỹ Đa Đông 10, Đà Nẵng! (link to about page with map and llnk to google maps)

LST Surf Vietnam surf trip danang

Surf Da Nang, Nha Trang, Mui Ne

These 3 cities hold the heart of surfing in Vietnam. Mui Ne has a longer history of surfing and watersports particularly kite boarding as it is a world famous wind location.  Nha Trang has the newest community of the three and has some epic surf spots close by and in town. But for us at LST Surf Danang takes trump.

There quite a are a few reasons for this. Danang is the most laid back and nicest of the 3 places to live. It is a bigger city with all the things you could need yet the beach community is on the corner of town, and it feels like a nice friendly small town. Danang also picks up more swell than the other 2 aforementioned cities. more waves are directly equal to more funs.  Danang has its own groups of fairly close waves that work much more consistently than do the southern waves. So easy It is easy to get to and surf some different spots when the waves are there but not epic. And of course, when an epic swell event is coming one can still mobilize and make it anywhere along the coast to catch a swell if they want, north, south, or central, plus My Khe beach pumps.

Come Join us to surf

LST loves meeting the folks who come through and hearing stories sharing laughs, skates, surfs, and beers. Stop by the shop and say hello or join us for a surf. We look forward to seeing you! Important things to know to prepare for your next surf trip in Asia

Preparing for a surf trip in Asia can be an exciting adventure, but it’s essential to plan ahead to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some important things to know and consider as you prepare for your next surf trip in Asia:

Check the Weather and Surf Conditions:

Stay updated on weather forecasts and surf conditions for your chosen destination. Surfing is being at the mercy of the ocean. And not every spot generates waves all year round! If you go to Thailand in December to surf, well the sea would be mostly super flat!

So you need to check the best time to visit a surf destination before booking your trip!

Surfline is our favorite site to check the condition.

Visa and Travel Documents:

Check the visa requirements for the country you plan to visit. Make sure your passport is up to date and will remain valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.

Travel Insurance:

Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and loss or damage to your surf equipment. This can provide peace of mind in case of unexpected issues.

Surf Equipment:

Decide whether you’ll bring your surfboard or rent one on-site. If you bring your own board, ensure it’s in good condition and consider investing in a quality board bag for protection during travel.

Local Surf Culture and Etiquette:

Familiarize yourself with the local surf culture and etiquette. Respect the rules and customs of the surf spot and the local community. It’s important to be a responsible and respectful surfer.
