Why should I pack a cruise capsule wardrobe

european cruise capsule wardrobe

Before we get into how to put together a cruise capsule wardrobe first we are going to go through why you pack a capsule wardrobe for a cruise for those that are on the fence.

For those of you who are first time cruisers it it worth pointing out that cruise cabin staterooms are not renowned for being large. By packing a capsule wardrobe you will be taking up much less space in your cabin which is always a plus.

Also by packing a capsule wardrobe you will be able to use less bulky luggage. As you have to store your luggage in your stateroom it is always an advantage to be able to use less busy luggage. This is particularly useful if you are going on an extra long cruise i.e. a world cruise (please check out this how to pack for a world cruise or transatlantic cruises posts for more information on packing for longer cruises).

Capsule wardrobes for river cruises are also especially important as river cruises tend to have even smaller cabins than their ocean going counterparts.

Also there is a chance (depending on how good you are and how much of an over packer you are you may be able to do a cruise with carry on only.

Now capsule wardrobes are great not only for cruises but for other types of travel and for those who want to minimise their wardrobe more generally. For information on how to pack a minimalist capsule wardrobe check out this post.

As such there are a few main capsule wardrobe rules or principles that you should try to abide by when putting together your cruise capsule wardrobe

The main rules for putting together a cruise capsule wardrobe are:

Only take beloved items

Now by this I mean only take items that you are absolutely 100% sure that you want to wear. If there is something that is on your maybe pile or an item of clothes that you find yourself not wearing much at home my advice is to leave this at home.

If you don’t wear it at home it is unlikely it will be come a go to item on a cruise ship.

Everything must work in more than one outfit

Don’t pack anything that can only be worn in one way. Everything you pack must work in several outfits and be dressed up or down with different accessories.

Pack less but get more

In the theme of the above the whole principle of capsule wardrobes, its tagline if you will is pack less get more outfits.

You could also try using the 5 4 3 2 1 Packing Method .

Color schemes

Now this isn’t necessary in all capsule wardrobes but I like to pick a color pallete to that everything I wear goes with several other things.

So now we have discussed why you should pack a capsule wardrobe and the basics about packing capsule rules we will turn our attention to how to put together a cruise capsule wardrobe.

Note : This cruise capsule packing lists is designed to be used on wherever you are going on your cruise however some cruises do require some adjustments based on the weather and activities you may be doing on your cruise.

Cruise Capsule Wardrobe Packing List

T Shirts are a staple of any cruise capsule wardrobe. If you are cruising somewhere hot then t shirts should be included on your Caribbean cruise capsule wardrobe packing list as they are cool and if you are going somewhere such as Alaska or Iceland they are a great base layers.

I take several usually one for each day of the cruise.

Click here to shop t shirts

Tailored shorts are perfect for hot weather cruises. Pick a color that matches most of your tops to make sure it is interchangeable.

I normally take one slightly more Casual pair and one slightly smarter.

Capri Pants / Long Trousers

Briggs New York Womens Pull On Capri Pocket Casual Pants, Cobblestone, 16 US

Capri pants or long trousers in a versatile color are a must for any capsule wardrobe. They are great for locations where you need to wear long length trousers i.e. the Middle East or religious sites but also can be used on smart casual evenings in the main dining room dressed up with some wedges or pashmina and top.

I normally take one smarter and one more casual pair of trousers with me on every cruise.

LookbookStore Women's Casual Cute V Neck Mesh Panel Blouse 3/4 Bell Sleeve Loose Top Summer Flowy Work Shirt Nautical Blue Size XX-Large

A blouse again is the perfect day to night transition item. During the day it is perfect for day’s when the weather is cooler or you need a more conservative outfit i.e. in places like Qatar with a strict dress code .

It can also be dressed up with jewellery and a pashmina for a smart casual evening in the dining room.

Amazon Essentials Women's Twist Front Maxi Dress, Cobalt Blue, Medium

Maxi dresses are another great transition item for day to night wear. Maxi dresses are great in hot weather during the day especially if you pick a cotton fabric (which we recommend you do as irons are a cruise prohibited item and firmly on the what not to pack on a cruise list ).

Click here to shop Maxi dresses

Then again they can be dressed up with a pashmina or jewellery.

Ciormis Shawl Wraps for Women, Silky Jacquard Paisley Pashmina Scarves for Bridal Formal Dresses(US-Light Blue)

A pashmina is a great way to turn a day time look into a night time look. It helps dress ups any outfit and it is a vital item to protect you from the ship’s air conditioning which can be fierce.

This can be either real or imitation. Personally I don’t wear my nice jewellery when in port but use on the cruise in the evening to dress up outfits and then leave it in the safe for when I am on shore.

Skechers womens Beverlee - Date Glam Sandal , Navy , 10

Wedges for me are the perfect evening shoe. They are dressy enough for formal nights but also can be worn as a daytime sandal too.

If you are anything like me you will do a lot of walking on your cruise excursions. Make sure you have a really comfy pair with you that you have already worn in.

These are perfect for round the pool deck, on beach excursions and fi you pick a pair with good arch support they will also be great for walking in.

Click here to shop sandals with good arch support

This is an essential if you are planning on using the gym on the cruise ship or taking a class like a yoga class. Ideally you will be able to use this on one of your more active shore excursions too.

Ok, it is hard to have swimwear that has more than one purpose but you will definitely want to take this with you.

Beach Cover or Sarong.

If you are doing lots of beach excursions or plan on spending lots of time on the pool deck you will want to add a beach cover or sarong to your packing list. I personally like a sarong as it is a bit more versatile that a sarong as it can be style in a couple of different ways to make the outfit look different.

We recommend packing a smarter hat rather than a baseball cap as these can be used in more places and as part of more outfits.

A must for any cruise as the sea can get dazzling.

Click here to shop our favourite sunglasses.

Depending on the cruise and expected weather I will probably add a jacket that goes with most things to my packing list.

For cold weather destinations and for those that get cold in air con I would also add a cardigan in a versatile color

Cross body bag

Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag, Black, One Size, 8.5 x 8.5 x 2

A cross body bag in a neutral color that works with all your outfits is perfect for shore excursions. As with any tourist destinations around the world there can be pick pockets looking to prey on unsuspecting tourists.

Make yourself a harder target by using a cross body anti theft bag instead of a backpack or other type of purse.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: How to Dress Like A European

The ultimate travel capsule wardrobe.

Being a skilled packer is not an easy feat. There is a formula that goes into creating the perfect Travel Capsule Wardrobe and I’m here to teach you my ways! With a little bit of strategy and a few classic versatile pieces, you will be packing light in no time. Along with that, while this collection can take you anywhere in the world, it’s designed for a European destination. Finally, read on for tips on How to Dress European so you don’t stand out as a tourist!

While all opinions and recommendations are always my own, my content on this blog post may contain affiliate links for products I use and love. As always, I am so thankful for your support so I can continue to offer free resources!!

Classic Clothing Items to Invest in

european cruise capsule wardrobe

When curating your travel wardrobe you want to start off with good solid pieces that will interchange with many outfits. These are the pieces to invest in because they will last for your trips in years to come! Also, always remember the cardinal rule when packing: stick to a similar color palette. It makes life easier when you’re on the road. Consider this your packing list for classic items:

Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is the clothing equivalent to a good black purse. It’s a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Being that it’s lightweight, I travel with mine the majority of the time. When shopping for your trench stick to a classic style.

White Button Down

The perfect all-season staple is a white button-down . Whether you’re wearing it with jeans, a leather skirt, or simply leggings you can never go wrong with this minimalist piece. I love wearing mine through the airport with leggings or with jean shorts in the summer. Being that they will never go out of style, this is a great piece to invest in.

A classic blazer will dress up any look with its sharp silhouette! It’s no longer a staple for the office we are taking the blazer everywhere with us. You can never go wrong styling a blazer with jeans and sneakers for a casual look. Or take it out to a fancy dinner paired over a midi dress and heels. Finally, throw it on with leggings and a tee at the airport for a polished look.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers have taken the fashion industry by storm in the past few years. They have become a new classic staple and I am here for it! Not only are they comfortable but they’re uber stylish as well. You can’t go wrong with that combo and the trousers I linked come in multiple colors.

Midi Dress (Spring/Summer)

A midi dress is a perfect balance between casual and polished. For summer travel, you can easily wear it with sneakers for a day of sightseeing or paid with heels and a clutch for a night out. It’s also a very flattering silhouette to add to your closet!

Sweater Dress (Fall/Winter)

The fall equivalent of a midi dress is a sweater midi dress . A cold weather staple and one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing to travel in during the colder months. Pair with sneakers for a daytime look or high-heeled boots for a fancy dinner. It rounds out your travel capsule wardrobe perfectly.

Straight Leg Jeans

I have a love-hate relationship with jeans when it comes to traveling but they are no doubt one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can add to your wardrobe. Stick to a straight-leg style since they are very trendy at the moment. You also want a pair that fits properly or else you will be uncomfortable. These AG Golde jeans come highly recommend and the material is a bit stretchy.

Neutral Cardigan

Cardigans have been in fashion for decades. Not only that but a cardigan comes in handy during those long-haul flights and train rides. I like to pair my neutral cardi with straight-leg jeans, a tank top, and sneakers for a travel day polished look.

Trendy Pieces

Trendy pieces are a great way to round out your travel capsule wardrobe. You can easily filter these pieces in and out as you see fit. Finally, when shopping for trendy clothes I tend to go out of the box in terms of colors and patterns as I will filter out these pieces within a year or so.

Statement Blouse

A statement blouse truly makes a statement. The best part about wearing a statement blouse is you can keep your other articles of clothing simple. Let the blouse have its own moment!

Leather Trousers

Leather trousers are another hot item that has taken the fashion world by storm. I don’t see leather slowing down as a trend so pick yourself up a pair of classic pants to last years to come.

Black Split Front Pants

These split-front pants elevate any outfit but feel like leggings. Sounds like a win-win for me! Pair this with a white button-down, black booties, and throw on a trench coat and you have yourself a solid European Outfit.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Accessories

Retro sneakers.

The sneaker trend is not going anywhere so buckle up sister and buy yourself a nice pair of retro sneakers . These can easily be styled with a dress and denim jack. Or opt to wear them with split front pants and a white button-down.

Wearable Heels

I tend to only pack one pair of wearable heels when traveling to Europe. Mostly because of the cobblestone streets. They do not pair well with heels. However, if you choose a pair with a chunky heel you’ll be waltzing down those streets in style.

Black Heeled Booties

The versatility of Black Heeled Booties is endless! Whether you pair it with leather trousers and a statement blouse or opt for a more casual look with jeans and a white button-down you can trust these booties to last for years. I always splurge on accessories because they are mostly worn in my wardrobe.

Crossbody Bag

I love a good shoulder bag like the rest of the fashion world but when traveling I always carry a crossbody bag . For multiple reasons one being scams and pickpocketers. When wearing your crossbody in front of your person you are less likely to have someone rummaging through there when no one is looking. I love this trendy crossbody from Marc Jacobs because it’s the perfect blend of classic and trendy.

Wide Brim Fedora

An easy way to elevate any daytime look is by adding a wide brim fedora . You can pair it with a leather jacket and jeans for a daytime look or with a sweater dress and over-the-knee boots for a night out. The best part about wearing a hat while traveling is not only do you look chic but it protects your face from the sun.

Travel Tote Bag

An ideal tool that comes in handy for travelers is a tote bag . Whether you’re toting around your laptop at the airport or simply shopping in the European markets, bringing a classic tote bag on your trip will always be a good idea.

Black Sunglasses

Chic, timeless, and classic. I am describing these Le Specs Sunglasses that I own in two colors because they are that good. We love a good pair of sunglasses to hide our tired eyes while traveling. Finally, they are under $70 so it’s a steal.

How to Dress European

The key to blending in with the Europeans is creating an outfit that has 3 elements: classic, cool, and minimalism. If you can learn this formula you will be golden. Another important thing to remember is that Europeans do not wear activewear as a leisure outfit unless they are quite literally on their way to the gym. So leave the lululemon and baseball caps at home! One of the main reasons we want to blend in as locals when traveling is because you are less susceptible to being targeted for a travel scam. Here are a few packing tips to help you dress like a European:

  • Stick to classic clothing, you can also dare to be trendy with some pieces because it is Europe after all
  • Wear neutral colors
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes that look elevated
  • Leave the athleisure wear and logos at home
  • Don’t wear jeans often, they used to be a big no-no but in recent years have become more accepted in Europe. Opt for a straight leg or wide leg pair they are tres chic
  • Alternatively, if you are wearing a feminine outfit choose a menswear-inspired shoe

Packing for a cruise can be overwhelming. You don’t want to pack too much, and you certainly don’t want to pack too little. A cruise capsule wardrobe can help with that.

Save For Later 4

What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

Generally, a capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing in a set color palette that is chosen for its ability to be easily mixed and matched. For the color palette, you choose two or three neutral colors and a couple of complementary brighter colors, building your wardrobe on that foundation.

For a minimalist capsule wardrobe, you would choose classic pieces of clothing, basics like jeans, slacks, a jean jacket, a nice sweater, a black dress, a white button-up shirt, a blazer, T-shirts, sneakers, flats, and heels. Of course, the list changes with the seasons.

A cruise capsule wardrobe can’t be as minimal as a traditional capsule wardrobe because you are limited to the clothing you bring onboard, and no one wants to handwash clothes in your bathroom sink if you can help it. Yes, you can send out laundry onboard, but it takes a couple of days to be processed and it is expensive.

For a minimalist cruise capsule wardrobe, you would choose basics like shorts, slacks, tees and other tops, swimsuits, sundresses, a sweater, a sun hat, sandals, sneakers, and sunglasses.

So, let’s expound on that a bit for a realistic cruise capsule wardrobe.

How To Create A Cruise Capsule Wardrobe

To create a cruise capsule wardrobe, you first look at several factors that will determine how many pieces of clothing you will choose, what types of items you will need, the color palette, and the weather in your ports of call. You will also need to consider the culture of where you are visiting.

First up, the parameters of your cruise.

Parameters Of The Cruise

Critical information you need is the length of your cruise, where it is going, and the time of year you are traveling. How many sea days will you have? How many port days? Are you staying in a hotel before or after the cruise for a day or two, exploring? What is the culture of the area you are traveling to? Will you be taking excursions to churches or other sites that might require you to dress conservatively?

For a cruise capsule wardrobe, you will need to plan for about two outfits a day, one for the daytime and one for the evening.

Check The Weather

As far out as possible, check the weather for your embarkation port and your ports of call. Then you can start planning your wardrobe. Before you pack, though, check the weather again as close as possible to when you leave for your trip. Make any adjustments necessary to what you are packing.

Clothing you will need.

In general, the basics you will need are tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes. Those are what we will focus on for your cruise capsule wardrobe. But you will also need accessories and other necessary items that we will go over later.

Tops : For these, plan on one per day or so of your cruise, then add a few extras. If you are cruising in hot weather, plan for more tops because you may not be able to wear them more than once. So, for a cool-weather cruise that lasts seven days, plan on taking 7 or 8 tops. For a hot-weather cruise that lasts seven days, plan on taking 10 or 11 tops.

For this seven-day cruise, we will look for 10 or so tops that can be dressed up or down.

Bottoms : For these, plan on about half the number of days of your cruise. A little more if you are cruising during hot weather.

For this seven-day cruise, about 5 bottoms will do.

Dresses : On a seven-day cruise, you will have one dress-up night, so plan to take a nice dress for that. On a hot-weather cruise, take one or two sundresses as well.

For this seven-day cruise, we will choose one nicer dress and two other dresses.

Outerwear : For a hot-weather cruise, outerwear isn’t needed, except for maybe a sweater for cool areas on the ship. For a cool-weather cruise, you might need to take a sweater, a jacket, and/or a rain jacket, depending on the weather.

Shoes : Try to keep your shoes to a low number. I do my best to keep mine at below half the number of days of my cruise. So, for a seven-day cruise, I will only take three or four pairs of shoes: a pair of sandals and/or flats, a pair of sneakers, and a dressy pair of shoes.

For this seven-day cruise, we will choose one pair of sneakers, one pair of strappy heels, and a pair of sandals.

Swimsuits : For a cool-weather cruise, you will only need one or two swimsuits and a coverup. For a hot-weather cruise, you will want to bring another swimsuit or two.

For this cruise, we would take three swimsuits and one coverup, but we won’t focus on those for the capsule wardrobe.

Accessories

Clothing accessories you will want to pack include jewelry, scarves, handbags, hats, and sunglasses.

Jewelry : Jewelry is how you make an outfit your own. Bring a statement necklace or two, plus earrings, and bracelets if you wear them.

Scarves : Scarves only come into play with cool-weather cruises. Bring a couple in nice patterns to enhance your outfits.

Handbags : You will need a small purse with a long strap for onboard, and a crossbody bag or tote when you go ashore.

Hats : A sun hat is a must on many cruise itineraries. Protect your skin!

Sunglasses : Bring a pair of sunglasses; two if you are on a hot-weather cruise.

Choosing Your Color Palette

First, choose two or three neutrals such as black, navy, white, cream, or gray. Then choose two complementary colors.

On the color wheel below, complementary colors are either across from each other on the wheel, or they are on three or four points of the triangles or rectangles or the square in the center. So, if we wanted a royal blue (which the color wheel calls violet), for instance, we would look across the color wheel and pick lemon yellow. These two colors work extremely well together.

Sometimes, it is easier to just pick one of our favorite patterned pieces of clothing or multi-hued jewelry and pick two of the colors prominent in it.

Creating Your Cruise Capsule Wardrobe

You will want to shop your closet for items for your cruise, but if you’re looking for something new, we have some suggestions here for affordable fast-fashion options from Amazon. If you are looking to invest in quality clothing for your cruise capsule wardrobe, we have suggestions for those too, so feel free to take a peek at our other posts .

Shop Your Closet

Now it is time to go through your closet to see what you can pull together. Since I can’t go through your closet with you, I will shop Amazon’s closet to pull together a wardrobe to show you how I do it.

Let’s pretend we are going to the Caribbean for a seven-day cruise in January. We checked the weather for our ports, and the temperatures are going to be in the eighties every day. The culture in the islands is very casual.

You will want to pull from your closet all the items that are in the color palette you choose, then sort through them for what will work best for this trip.

Color Palette

For our color neutrals, I chose navy and white. For our colors, let’s go with blue and yellow.

For tops, I chose five short-sleeve casual tops, one blouse, and two dressier tops. Three are prints and five are solids, which helps with mixing and matching.

I selected five bottoms: three pairs of shorts and two pairs of long pants.

For dresses, I chose a below-the-knee spaghetti-strap dress, a short dress, and a floral maxi dress.

Keeping shoes to a minimum, we have a pair of casual sandals, a slip-on sneaker, and a chunky heel.

You will need a hat for the sun, of course, as well as sunglasses. Two purses: a wristlet with a long strap for use on the ship, and a tote for excursions and travel. An open jersey cardigan is perfect both for layering while you travel and for taking to restaurants in case the venue is chilly.

Outfits You Can Make

You can make dozens of outfits with the clothing chosen; these are just a sampling.

On a seven-day Caribbean cruise, you will probably have three sea days. Here are some ideas for outfits you can wear onboard during the day.

With three days at sea, that means four excursions. Here’s how you can style your outfits for those days ashore. Be sure to wear a hat and take your sunglasses!

Casual Dinners

On a Caribbean cruise, you may eat at the buffet in the evening, and you can wear what you wore during the day. However, in the main dining rooms, you should up your game a little since you can’t wear shorts. Here are some ideas:

Dressy Dinners

On one night during the cruise, there will be a dress-up night where you will want to look your very best. Photographers are ready to take photos for you, so it’s time to shine. Bon Voyage, Fashionista! Unveiling Your Cruise Capsule Wardrobe

Embarking on a cruise adventure is an exciting escape, and having a well-planned cruise capsule wardrobe ensures you sail through your vacation with style and ease. In this article, we delve into the art of curating a cruise capsule wardrobe that combines practicality, fashion, and versatility, allowing you to make the most of your journey on the high seas.

In this article you will find out:

What is a cruise capsule wardrobe?

How do i create a cruise capsule wardrobe, what should i pack for a cruise capsule wardrobe.

  • What outfits should I prepare for formal nights on a cruise? (women/men)
  • What footwear should I include in my cruise capsule wardrobe? (women/men)

What accessories should I include in my cruise capsule wardrobe?

A cruise capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully curated collection of versatile clothing items and accessories that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of stylish and functional outfits for a cruise vacation. The goal of a cruise capsule wardrobe is to pack efficiently while ensuring you have the right clothing for different activities, climates, and occasions that you’ll encounter during your cruise.

Creating a cruise capsule wardrobe involves selecting a limited number of items that can be worn interchangeably to maximize outfit options while minimizing the amount of luggage you need to bring. Here’s how to create one:

1. Choose a Color Palette:

  • Opt for a color scheme that includes neutrals (like black, white, navy) for easy mixing.
  • Consider adding a few accent colors or patterns that complement each other.

2. Select Versatile Clothing:

  • Pack essential pieces like dresses, tops, bottoms, and outerwear that can be easily dressed up or down.
  • Choose items that can be layered for varying weather conditions.
Ensure that each clothing piece can be worn with multiple others in your collection. Focus on pieces that can create several outfits with minimal effort.

3. Think About Accessories:

  • Pack accessories like scarves, jewelry, belts, and hats to transform outfits.
  • Accessories take up less space but can significantly change your look.

4. Plan for Special Events:

  • If your cruise has formal nights or themed parties, pack appropriate attire.
  • Choose pieces that can be used for multiple formal occasions.

5. Pack Smartly:

  • Utilize packing cubes to keep your items organized and compact.
  • Roll or fold clothes efficiently to maximize space.

6. Focus on Comfort:

  • Choose fabrics that are comfortable and appropriate for the climate.
  • Prioritize items that don’t easily wrinkle.

By following these steps, you’ll create a cruise capsule wardrobe that allows you to enjoy your vacation without the stress of overpacking or feeling like you have nothing to wear. With a well-planned capsule, you’ll have stylish and practical options for every aspect of your cruise experience.

What outfits should I prepare for formal nights on a cruise?(women/men)

Formal nights on a cruise call for elegant and sophisticated attire. Here are some outfit ideas to help you prepare for formal evenings:

  • Classic Evening Gown: Opt for a floor-length formal gown in a flattering silhouette. Choose a solid color or subtle patterns for timeless elegance.
  • Cocktail Dress: A knee-length cocktail dress in rich fabrics like satin or silk can be a stylish choice for a formal night.
Little Black Dress (LBD): A well-fitted LBD with tasteful accessories can be a versatile option that exudes sophistication.
  • Two-Piece Ensemble: Consider a matching set with a formal top and skirt. This allows for mixing and matching with other pieces later.
  • Jumpsuit: A chic jumpsuit with elegant details and a tailored fit can make a fashionable statement.
Classic Tuxedo: A traditional black tuxedo with a bow tie, dress shirt, and formal shoes is the epitome of formal attire.
  • Dark Suit: If a tuxedo is not your style, a well-fitted dark suit with a tie or bow tie can be equally appropriate.
  • Tuxedo Jacket with Dress Slacks: Pairing a tuxedo jacket with dress slacks and a formal shirt is a sophisticated alternative.
  • Dinner Jacket: A stylish dinner jacket in a different color or pattern can add a touch of individuality to your formal look.

How To Pack A Fall 2022 Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Europe

european cruise capsule wardrobe

The calendar may say Fall but that doesn’t always mean temperatures dip into brisk territory. Cool mornings and evenings and warm afternoons require versatile and lightweight travel layers. A well planned travel capsule wardrobe for Fall will help you be prepared for just about anything!

Traveling with only carry-on luggage is important, now more than ever. The risk of luggage getting lost is up over 20% since last year. The best way to avoid this mini travel disaster is to pack a travel capsule wardrobe and pack a carry-on bag only. Use this sample capsule as a guide for planning your travel wardrobe.

The pieces in this capsule can stand alone or are meant to coordinate with other layers. This travel capsule wardrobe can take you from 7 days to 1 month or more of travel. That is the beauty of the travel capsule and why I’m completely obsessed with the concept. Even in you aren’t traveling to Europe use this as a template to help you plan your own travel capsule wardrobe. To see how to put the outfits together, read this post.

Download my FREE travel capsule planner here. Read the Spring Travel Capsule Guide here.

TIPS TO PACK A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE FOR FALL IN EUROPE

Light layers for fall travel.

Choose lightweight clothing that layers easily. This capsule relies on lightweight layers like t-shirts, a button down, light cardigan and a blazer. Thin cotton, rayon, tencel, silk and thin merino wool or cashmere are the types of fabrics you should pack. Check the weather for the dates of your trip and select clothing items that work for the range of expected temperatures.

Wearing and packing lightweight layers help you be prepared for a wide range of fall temperatures. This will allow you to pack light and stay warm, no matter what the weather or activity of the day may be. Layers can be broken down into base layers (long sleeves/pants), mid-layers (think sweaters) and outer layers (jackets).

Pack Neutral Colors

Yes, you’ve heard it many times. To pack a capsule wardrobe you need to stick to a color palette. The EASIEST way to do this is to choose neutrals and add in color with accessories or prints.

Shoes first, outfits later

The most important element of your travel capsule wardrobe is your shoes. Ideally, you are only packing 2 pairs at most 3 pairs. For this capsule, I’ve included 3 pairs but you could easily pack only 2 of the shoes shown and be fine.

The shoes included are a boot which is perfect for day to night travel activities, Europe isn’t that formal so a nice boot will get you through most travel scenarios. A good walking or fashion sneaker is now a travel “must have” for me, I can’t imagine a trip where I wouldn’t pack them and they are widely worn in Europe. I threw in the loafer because they are on trend right for Fall 2022 and are also versatile footwear that can go casual or dressed up.

My preference is a boot and a sneaker. Travel in Europe demands a walk able shoe and by walk able I mean that you and your shoes can withstand 10-20,000 steps a day comfortably. With that in mind, it may help to plan your travel outfits around your shoes.

Accesssorize

Use accessories to add some color to a palette of neutrals. Editing accessories to specific travel outfits that you have planned will keep you from overpacking. Keep jewelry minimal and never pack anything you wouldn’t want to loose.

Whether you’re planning on spending the fall in Europe or just looking to refresh your wardrobe, these tips will help you get ready for your trip. A fall travel capsule should be versatile enough to take you from day to night. This sample capsule shows great ways to keep your outfits flexible and fun. A follow-up outfit post is coming soon! Happy packing!

What to wear on a Cruise

  • Your clothing choices will depend on your ports of call and the likely weather conditions.
  • For hotter climes opt for shorts, skirts and short-sleeved shirts in light natural fabrics.
  • When cruising in cooler destinations you'll prefer trousers, long-sleeved shirts and jackets in thicker weights.
  • Clever layering is the best way to cope with changeable weather conditions – e.g. wear a jacket over a fleece, over a t-shirt, over an undershirt.
  • Consider the activities you plan to do off ship – will you need particular clothing or footwear?
  • Check the evening dress codes – these vary between cruise line and ship and may be strictly enforced.
  • Glamorous heels are great for formal nights, but if the sailing is rough then the ship may move around a lot. Heels aren't the best option then, so have some smart flats handy too.
  • The amount of food you can eat on a cruise is all part of the appeal; we recommend you pack clothes with comfortable waistbands!
  • Pick a simple colour scheme of neutrals plus one or two statement shades. Make sure all your clothes co-ordinate so they can be mixed and matched.
  • Remember you will need an outfit to travel in! Wear your bulkiest clothes and shoes where possible.
  • Download our complete packing list below for all quantities and a checklist of items.

What to pack for a cruise

Swimwear

Casual Tops

Pack simple tops in your favourite colours that will match your trousers, shorts and skirt. Team with a scarf or necklace on a couple of evenings, then wear by day for sightseeing. Depending on the climate choose from long or short-sleeved, sleeveless, or a mixture. We really like bamboo fabrics.

Suggested buy : Texere Hypoallergenic Bamboo Fiber Tee by Amazon

Swimwear

Evening Top

Pick a luxurious top for evening wear that goes well with your skirt and smart-casual trousers. Add sandals or heels and you're good to go!

Suggested buy : Lush Roll Tab Sleeve Woven Shirt by Nordstrom

Swimwear

Fleece or Light Sweater

Even in hot weather the breezes can make it feel cool when sailing, whilst inside the air-con can also be chilly. A fleece is light, cosy and packs well – or opt for a smarter sweater if that's more your style.

Suggested buy : The North Face Womens Glacier 1/4 Zip by Amazon

Swimwear

Smart Cardigan or Jacket

A smart cardigan or light jacket will dress up your outfit for evening, and it adds that extra something round your shoulders if the air-con gets too breezy. Choose a colour to match or complement your tops and dress.

Suggested buy : Kate Spade 'Somerset' Cardigan by Nordstrom

Swimwear

Casual Trousers or Shorts

These should be practical for days out. Consider the type of activities you will do – are they city-based or more rural/active? Choose fabrics that dry quickly in case of rain. Styles with detachable legs are a good option for varied temperatures. You might opt for shorts instead for hotter climes, but trousers are good protection against sun and insects.

Suggested buy : Royal Robbins Zip N' Go Pant by Amazon

Swimwear

Smart-Casual Trousers

Choose a pair that are comfy for day wear (team with a casual top and walking shoes), but can also be dressed up for dinner by switching to heels, your evening top and jewellery. Smart jeans in dark denim would work well, although you may prefer something lighter in hot weather.

Suggested buy : NYDJ Straight Leg Denim by Amazon

Swimwear

Skirt or Tailored Shorts

These can also be worn for lazy days out with a simple top and sandals, then add your smart cardigan and scarf for the evenings.

Suggested buy : Eileen Fisher Linen Drawstring Skirt by Nordstrom

Swimwear

Ideally choose something that can be dressed up or down by changing your shoes and adding accessories – almost any dress looks smart worn with heels and a scarf. These Karina dresses are very flattering and they pack brilliantly – no ironing ever needed!

Suggested buy : Audrey Dress by Karina Dresses

Swimwear

Some statement jewellery can really set off an outfit and takes up very little room in your case. Costume jewellery works just fine, and it's often better to leave your valuables at home.

Suggested buy : Multi Row Statement Necklace by Nordstrom

Swimwear

Pashmina or Scarf

A ‘must take' item for any holiday as they are just so versatile: cover your shoulders at religious sites; dress up any outfit for evening; put round you if there's a chill (or air-con); use as a sarong over your swimwear.

Suggested Buy : Sarongs & Scarves on Amazon

Swimwear

Comfortable walking shoes

If you plan to do lots of walking on shore you'll need some active shoes. Closed-toe are best on dusty roads, and if you're heading off the beaten track do make sure you have something sturdy and supportive that are suited to the terrain. Hotter Shoes have some ultra comfortable options (that also look pretty great).

We love these : Chase Shoes by Hotter

Swimwear

Deck Shoes or Sandals

Take some non-slip comfy flats for daytime on deck and casual evenings. If they have a bit of sparkle you can even wear them on formal nights too if your feet need a little more comfort.

Try these : Play II Sandals by Hotter

Swimwear

Smart Heels

Pack one stylish pair for a touch of glamour, but don't go too high – it can be rocky on board if you encounter rough seas! In warm weather your feet may swell too, so make sure they're comfy if you want to dance the night away.

We love : Pruce Ankle Strap Heels by Nordstrom

Swimwear

Essential for sun protection in hot weather or to keep out the cold and wet in cooler regions. It's usually windy at sea, so choose a style that stays on securely – it's useful for keeping your hair under control too.

Suggested Buy! : Packable Sun Hat on Amazon

Swimwear

It's extremely bright at sea when the sun's out as the rays reflect off the water. If you want to admire the views then sunglasses are essential.

Suggested buy: : Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer by Amazon

Swimwear

Good sunscreen is essential in hotter climes, and don't get caught out on cloudy days either – you can still get burnt. Remember that water will reflect the sun's rays too. Choose a product with a high SPF (protects from UVB rays) and also look for the star or PA rating which indicates protection from UVA.

Suggested buy: : SPF 30 PA+++ Water Resistant Sunscreen by Murad

Swimwear

Packaway Jacket

A light packaway raincoat is a good idea to carry with you on day trips – it's ideal in case the weather changes quickly or you experience a sudden downpour. You can layer up underneath for warmth if necessary, or opt for a more substantial jacket in cooler climes.

Suggested buy: : Charles River New Englander Rain Jacket by Amazon

Swimwear

Essential for lazy days of sun-bathing, or perhaps you prefer pampering in the spa.

Suggested buy: : Speedo Shirred Tank One-Piece by Amazon

Swimwear

You'll need a lightweight bag for all your sightseeing essentials. Our packaway day sack folds up into itself and fits easily in your suitcase when not in use. It's surprisingly roomy, showerproof and light to carry – even in hot weather.

Suggested Buy! : Fold Away Day Sack on Amazon

One of our readers wanted to know what to pack for a cruise for women over 60 when traveling to the Mediterranean and the Seine River. Find out our suggestions!

What to Pack for a Cruise 60+

Travel Fashion help! Reader asks:

“I am trying very hard to pack carryon for a 38 day trip which includes a 21 day Mediterranean cruise on Princess Cruises and a Vantage River cruise on the Seine River ending in Paris for 2 nights.

We have a flight on Vueling Airlines which has similar baggage requirements to Ryanair. I’m concerned that I’ll have to check my carryon bag and don’t want the bag to be ruined by luggage handlers.

I thought about bringing my Samsonite carryon, which weighs about 9 pounds – almost half of the weight allowed on the Vueling Airlines carryon. I’m also worried that the baggage handler may damage my bag.

At 66 years of age and wearing a size 22, nothing I own is small and lightweight, including medications & supplements. However, I’m trying to carryon even with four formal nights on the cruise and one on the river cruise. I do plan to do laundry on the 21 day cruise.

Can you please help me figure out what to pack for a cruise?

Also, I was watching the video that Alex did on the Osprey Ozone rolling suitcase . Did I hear Alex correctly that she was going to retire this suitcase? Which suitcase is she going to use instead?”

european cruise capsule wardrobe

Osprey Ozone 22 |  Delsey Traversee Lite

I’ve temporarily retired my Osprey Ozone 22 because I’m no longer traveling full-time, but I still love it and use it for long trips to non-city destinations. I do think it’s slightly too tall to fit as a Ryanair carryon.

Ryanair has extremely limited baggage restrictions and they’re very strict. If you’d like to go carryon, I’d recommend choosing a bag that weighs around 4 lb. My favorite soft-side carryon suitcase is the Delsey Traversee Lite  – it’s so light! Use slim packing cubes to help you organize and even compress your belongings to maximize your space.

The most common piece of advice offered by our readers is that there will be so many people on board the cruise that it will be difficult to tell if anyone wears the same thing twice.

You can even take just one formal dress then dress it up with a colorful or print pashmina, scarf, or light coverup. If you choose a dress in a classic solid color, such as black or navy, then it will automatically look more formal even if you choose a less dressy fabric.

What to Pack for a Cruise to the Mediterranean

Above you’ll find an example Mediterranean cruise packing list. Use these items as visual inspiration and choose items from your own wardrobe that follow the general principles explained below. ( Here are more tips on how to customize our clothing visuals for your trips.)

For clothing, you can bring two to three bottoms in neutral colors and bring five to seven tops . If you choose items that are interchangeable and can mix and match, then you can rotate them to have a new outfit almost every day for your entire trip.

The same goes with shoes. Bring three pairs in neutral colors that are interchangeable with your clothing: one for everyday cruise walking, one for sightseeing excursions, and a pair to dress up at night.

Read more about how to choose the best shoes for travel !

Just changing your shoes in the evenings and adding costume jewelry can make you look dressier for business casual days.

You can then do laundry about once a week and hand wash items more frequently as needed (such as underwear). Some cruise bathrooms have a laundry line already in your cabin. However, you can also bring an additional line like  this so you can dry more clothing as needed.

One of our readers mentioned that Princess Cruises has washers and dryers, but not all cruise lines do. You can bring your own laundry pods like these .

Read these tips on how to hand wash clothing while traveling!

The same principles described above can be applied to women of all sizes, which you can read about more in this post on carryon plus-size packing tips .

All the clothing shown in the above sample cruise packing list is available in extended sizes.

We also have a plus-size packing list and it even has a short video to show you how we packed carryon only using packing organizers like these .

You can find more ideas about how to mix and match your clothing in our Signature Packing Lists . The visuals shown are only to be used as examples, so you can apply them to your own wardrobe and style preference.

For instance, a skirt signifies any bottom or a sleeveless top only stands for a top. The exact style is up to you. Read more about how to use our visuals here .

See our top picks for comfortable and stylish travel shoes for women over 60 !

Traveling with Medications

Packing prescription medication can get a bit complicated especially when traveling for extended periods of time. You should always pack your prescriptions in your carryon.

Depending on the amount you need to pack, this may limit your space. If you do need to check a bag, avoid bringing a carryon in addition to a checked bag. Try to limit your baggage to two items such as a regular suitcase in addition to one personal item you bring on the plane with you.

Read more about carryon personal items for flights!

While the occasional issue occurs with baggage handlers, try not to worry too much about this as it’s not a frequent incident. There were many times I checked my carryon over my nine years of full-time travel and thankfully, I haven’t had an issue with broken luggage at this point.

If you’d like extra protection, you can pay to have your luggage wrapped at the airport. Any time I’ve had to pack delicate items such as souvenirs, this little trick has worked very well!

Ladies – Packing for a Two Week Cruise: a Capsule Wardrobe for the Caribbean and Central America

european cruise capsule wardrobe

There are some times we must pack light. European trips involving frequent train travel — it’s the only way to go.  But ladies, when we talk road trips and cruises, we have a lot more latitude. You can bring the BIG suitcase!

european cruise capsule wardrobe

As I prepare to launch of for a month of travel, starting with two weeks of road-tripping through Florida, then culminating in a two week Celebrity cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale, I’ve ditched my carry-on spinner for a full-sized (25 inch) suitcase.

I’ve just replaced my full-sized suitcase with a new Travelpro. I loved my smaller carry-on size Travelpro spinner that I took to Italy in September, so I thought I’d try another bag from this luggage company.

If you’re interested in looking at the Travelpro 25″ Spinner, you’ll find it here on eBags,  or here on Amazon :  Travelpro Platinum Magna 2 25” Expandable Spinner Suiter (Olive,25-inch)

Travel wardrobes still require thought, even when you do have more space. Capsule wardrobes help you get more outfits from of fewer pieces of clothing. Regardless of whether you’re traveling, or simply improving your home wardrobe, they’re a smart way to think.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

The concept originated with Susie Faux in 1973 , at her shop Wardrobe in London’s West End.

The idea is to choose neutral, well-made pieces of clothing with the maximum ability to coordinate with one another, giving you as many outfits as possible. Capsule wardrobing is a great concept for anyone paring down their closet at home, but it is also perfectly suited to traveling.

Due to spending time on the beach, in the Caribbean, and in hot climates in Central and South America, I’m certainly going with lighter colors than I would if I were traveling in Europe.

A classic 4 x 4 Capsule wardrobe should have 16 pieces of clothing, not counting accessories, and can broken down as follows:

  • First Core of Four: Four pieces of clothing in a darker neutral (2 bottoms, 1 top, and 2nd top – preferably one cardigan or jacket)
  • Second Core of Four: Four pieces of clothing in a lighter neutral (2 bottoms, 1 top, 2nd top — preferably a cardigan or jacket)
  • Bridge/Expansion Four: Four tops that go with ALL of the Core pieces of clothing. Think either tops with patterns that have both of the core colors in them, or tops in colors that simply complement both of the core colors well.
  • Mileage Four: This might be 4 additional tops, or instead — perhaps 2 tops, an additional bottom, and a dress. For my trip, I added one extra piece here, so it turned out to be the Mileage Five :-).
  • Additional: Accent Accessories: scarves, jewelry, shoes, purses that work with the core pieces. I like scarves that bring pops of color to the basic neutral pieces of the wardrobe.

In addition, I am taking 2 swimsuits, one cover-up, and a pair of flip flops, which are not shown in the image below.

Capsule Travel Wardrobe showing what to pack for a two week cruise Caribbean

Within the two Core sets of neutrals, I’m taking  one light-weight cardigan in white, and one beige jacket. The white ruffled-front cardigan can hang open or be knotted at the waist. Purses: a soft blue Fossil hobo, as well as a Cole Haan black cross-body bag and a small silver clutch for evenings — giving me some variety and the ability to carry reading glasses, a Sea Pass card, and my iPhone.

What women choose to wear on “formal” nights varies dramatically , and you’ll see everything: cocktail dresses, more elegant maxi-style dresses, cropped pants with glittery tops, and some who have inexplicably chosen dresses that look like high school prom night. Note: on smaller, boutique cruise lines, like Windstar and Star Clippers, there are no formal nights. Every night is smart-casual.

For the dressier evenings on the ship, I have chosen NOT to bring a cocktail dress. I often bring a cocktail dress, but this on this trip I’m giving that a big miss. Since I have a two week road trip before the cruise, I need more versatile pieces of clothing.

Once onboard, my “dress night” garb will my black dress, and the cropped black pants with blue camisole or black tank top with more formal pieces of jewelry. I’ve done this on many cruises, and it’s worked well for me. Ladies, this is one place that we all vary. For my readers wanting dressier options, I’d switch out a couple of pieces within the Mileage category, and simply replace them with more formal options.

For my full four week trip, I’ll certainly be doing laundry — on the Florida road trip, the condo in Miami has a washing machine and dryer, so I’ll board the Celebrity Reflection with everything clean. Once onboard, I plan to send laundry out once. One thing to keep in mind: the industrial laundry on ships isn’t gentle. Hand washing knits or other delicate items in your room may be the smart way to go.

Here are images to give you an idea of just a few of the many combinations you can get from the Travel Capsule Wardrobe shown above.

Packing Folder and Cube System

Packing efficiently: I am a BIG believer in packing folders and packing cubes. Honestly, I’m not sure how I packed before getting the folders and cubes. In the nineties, I had a folding “suiter” case that had a central section for hanging close, then multiple zipping sections and pockets — and back then, that was as good is you could get.

In 2003, when that case wore out, I bought a new 25″ Samsonite case — you know, a standard suitcase with one central black hole of a big space. I bought my first packing folder and a couple of cubes, and I was sold. SO much better than the older suiter case that I’d had. If you haven’t used the folders and cubes, the Pack It video from Eagle Creek demonstrates how the system works.

For this packing list, I used two medium Eagle Creek Pack-It folders: one for bottoms + dress, and the other for tops, cardigan, and jacket. Then I put the undies, bras, sleepwear, and scarves in one cube, and swimsuits and cover-up in a second cube. Toiletries and makeup have separate bags. Everything fit in my 25″ Travelpro Spinner, no problem.

I love the folders, because while no packing method is wrinkle free, they decrease wrinkling better than any other method I’ve tried. I also love that I can pull the folders and cubes out of my suitcase, pop them into drawers, and I’m unpacked in a couple of minutes.
