NOFX announce UK shows as part of farewell tour

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (January 18)

Fat Mike racism

NOFX have announced a pair of UK headline shows as part of their 2023 farewell tour – tickets will be available here .

Last September, frontman Fat Mike told fans on Instagram that the Los Angeles punk-rock band would be breaking up this year having formed in 1983. “It’s been an amazing run,” he wrote at the time.

This month saw NOFX detail a string of US dates , which are due to take place between April and September.

“This is not a final tour like Mötley Crüe  or  Black Sabbath ,” Fat Mike said in a statement. “These are the very last shows NOFX will ever be playing. We are gonna play with all our hearts…With all our joy…And then we are done. We are done done.”

Now, it’s been confirmed that Slam Dunk Festival will host “two extra standalone shows” that’ll serve as NOFX’s final-ever UK gigs.

The group will take to the stage at the event’s site at Temple Newsam in Leeds on May 26 before they head south to Hatfield Park on May 28.

“These are going to be ones not to be missed with 2 albums from their impressive back catalog being played in full each day plus loads more,” organisers wrote on social media yesterday (January 16).

Meanwhile, Enter Shikari and The Offspring are scheduled to headline Slam Dunk Festival 2023 on May 27 (Hatfield) and May 28 (Leeds). Other artists confirmed for the dual event include Creeper ,  Billy Talent  and  Bowling For Soup .

Last month, NOFX guitarist Eric Melvin suggested the band could still release new music after retiring from touring . “He still wants to record and release records as NOFX,” Melvin said, referring to Fat Mike. “So we’ll see how that works because they kind of go hand-in-hand, but they don’t have to.”

NOFX released their latest album ‘Double Album’  in December 2022, while Fat Mike launched a new band called  Codefendants , which he described as a “genre fluid musical collective — a cross between hip hop, new-wave, flamenco, and the Beatles”.

Farewell rock tours that weren't real farewells:

Mötley crüe.

Mötley Crüe were so adamant that their swansong Final Tour in 2014 and 2015 was definitely their farewell tour that all four members signed a cessation of touring agreement seemingly banning them from stepping on stage together again. The 'final' show took place at The Staples Centre in Mötley Crüe's native Los Angeles on 31st December 2015. Three years later, the band hit the studio to record four songs for their Netflix biopic The Dirt , but they still insisted they weren't touring. To no one's surprise, in November 2019 Mötley Crüe destroyed their cessation of touring agreement citing the "huge success of The Dirt", and they announced a North American stadium tour with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett that finally happened in the summer of 2022. Mötley Crüe will hit the UK in 2023 for their co-headline tour with Def Leppard .

Blighted by inter-band tensions, Status Quo embarked on the 10-week swansong End of the Road tour in 1984 with the so-called Farewell Concert taking place at Milton Keynes Bowl on 21st July. Francis Rossi told Classic Rock years later: "Everybody was coked-up and hating each other and I'd started drinking tequila on that tour. I don't remember that show (in Milton Keynes) at all – the encores or anything; just falling flat on my back at one point." Continuing as a studio only band, Status Quo were coaxed into a live return by Bob Geldof when he asked them to open Live Aid at London's Wembley Stadium on 13th July 1985. Status Quo returned to live performances following that historic show, and, since Rick Parfitt's untimely passing in 2016 , Francis Rossi has continued under the Status Quo moniker to this very day.

Following the emphatic success of their Alive/Worldwide Tour and Psycho Circus World Tour with original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, KISS embarked on The Farewell Tour taking in shows in North America, Japan and Australia in 2000 and early 2001. Explaining KISS wanted to go out on a high, Paul Stanley said at the time: "We're the champs again, let's retire on top and we felt there is nothing worse than having someone go away and you don't get to say goodbye so this tour really is for the fans and to celebrate the whole history of the band." KISS went on to perform at the closing ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and in 2003 they toured with Aerosmith with Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer added to their ranks. KISS are currently in the midst of their second farewell tour , The End of the Road World Tour. Despite playing UK arena tour in 2019 and a headline slot at Download Festival 2022, KISS have announced a 'FINAL' UK leg in 2023 .

Ozzy Osbourne

In early 1992, the then 43-year-old Ozzy Osbourne said he was retiring from performing to spend more time with his family. He embarked on the 64-date No More Tours Tour in June 1992 and the trek concluded with two historic shows at Costa Mesa Pacific Ampitheatre on 14th and 15th November where Ozzy was joined by special guests Black Sabbath with Rob Halford on vocals. After Ozzy's set at the final concert, he reunited on stage with Black Sabbath to perform four songs – 'Black Sabbath', 'Fairies Wear Boots', 'Iron Man' and 'Paranoid.' What seemed like a fitting farewell for Ozzy ended just days later when he changed his mind and said he was "already bored with retirement." Ozzy headed out on the brilliantly titled Retirement Sucks Tour in 1995. Ozzy commenced his second farewell tour - No More Tours II - in 2018 and it's scheduled to finally visit the UK in 2023 .

The Who played a farewell tour in North America in late 1982, with Roger Daltrey saying of touring life during a press conference: "It's a nightmare. We can't get any bigger than we are… It's good to go out on top." John Entwistle was vehemently against The Who stopping touring, while Pete Townshend wanted The Who to become a studio band like The Beatles. The Who's 'last show' took place at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on 17th December, and their final USA gig at Richfield Coliseum in Cleveland, Ohio was immortalised with the 'Who's Last' live album. Just like Status Quo, The Who reformed for Live Aid in 1985 and four years later they reunited properly for a world tour.

Scorpions played a mammoth three-year farewell tour between 2010 and 2012 taking in more than 200 shows. However, Scorpions changed their mind about retiring from the road before the tour was even over. Singer Klaus Meine later explained the German hard rockers were having "way too much fun" to quit and said that playing for new generations of Scorpions fans was "motivating and inspiring." Guitarist Matthias Jabs later said the decision to announce a farewell tour was "stupid", adding "It's getting a bit ridiculous when you say (you're retiring from touring) and don't do it, so we won't do it again."

Judas Priest

In December 2010, Judas Priest announced that their upcoming farewell Epitaph World Tour would be their last. Rob Halford explained: "We're not the first band to say farewell, it's just the way everyone comes to at some point and we're gonna say a few more things early next year, so I think the main thing that we just want to ask everybody to consider is don't be sad about this, start celebrating and rejoicing over all the great things we've done in Judas Priest." K.K. Downing left Judas Priest before the start of the tour and their last concert took place at London's HMV Hammersmith Apollo on 26th May 2012. A year later, Halford said "it's turned out not to be the final world tour" and explained the band had "got into gear again" since they recruited Richie Faulkner. Judas Priest kicked off the Redeemer of Souls Tour in October 2014.

Nine Inch Nails

In 2009, Nine Inch Nails lynchpin Trent Reznor confirmed he's quitting touring. He told fans: "NIN as a touring live band or live band that's on the road all the time is stopping. I've just reached the point where it has invaded every other aspect of my life. I'd never want to be Gene Simmons, an old man who puts on makeup to entertain kids, like a clown going to work. In my paranoia, I fear that if I don't stop this, it could become that." The final gig took place at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on 10th September 2009. In 2013, Trent Reznor ended Nine Inch Nails' touring hiatus, saying: "I'll catch some flak for saying I wasn't going to (tour) again, but I changed my mind. I feel much more invigorated and inspired than I did when I said I didn't want do it anymore."

Back in 2013, the late-great Marvin Lee Aday – aka Meat Loaf – insisted that Last at Bat Tour in the UK and Europe would definitely be his swansong trek citing ill health. He told The Guardian: "I've had 18 concussions. My balance is off. I've had a knee replacement. I've got to have the other one replaced. Two weeks before the knee surgery, I literally couldn't walk from the bedroom to the kitchen. They took me to the hospital in an ambulance to get my knee replaced. And when they did, it was so damaged and torn up it's going to take a year to come back. It's just the travel. It takes it out of you. I want to concentrate more on acting. That's where I started and that's where I'll finish. This time, they're not going to rope me back in." Meat Loaf went on to play over 30 shows in North America in 2015 and 2016, however due to his deteriorating health he finally stepped back from live shows. His last live performance was on the Huckabee TV show in the US in September 2021, where he performed 3 songs in front of a live audience. Sadly he passed away just 4 months later .

In late 2016, Aerosmith announced they were embarking on a trek the following year called the Aero-Vederci Baby! Tour – a play on the Italian word for goodbye, arrivederci. The tour took in 25 shows including a headline slot at Download Festival 2017. Prior to the tour's announcement, guitarist Brad Whitford told Billboard: "We keep talking about what we may call a farewell tour, but based on the Kiss approach, that could go on for three to five years. We are seriously looking at that, just based on our age and everything." The tour ultimately didn't go on for several years – instead, Aerosmith played the Deuces are Wild residency in Las Vegas, although many of their international dates have been cancelled.

Unlike a number of rock acts on this list who changed their minds about retiring from the road shortly after their 'final' concerts, we have to give credit to Cream as they left it 37 years before coming back. Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker played two farewell gigs at London's Royal Albert Hall on 25th and 26th November 1968 with the second show released as the live video 'Farewell Concert.' The trio performed again at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1993 before reuniting properly for four concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2005. Buoyed by the success of the RAH gigs, Cream played a three-night residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City in October 2005, however old tensions between the band resurfaced and they went their separate ways for good. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker passed away in 2014 and 2019 respectively.

Formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, NOFX is an American punk rock/ ska punk band currently consisting of members, Fat Mike, El Hefe, Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin.

In 1983 Mike Burkett (Fat Mike) and Eric Melvin met and started the band, and were later joined by Erik Sandin. The group released their first album in 1985 with Mystic Records. The band then underwent a lineup change, but through the changes, the original three members remained intact. In 1986 the band released an album attacking the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) for their campaign against music censorship with “The P.M.R.C Can Suck On This.” Following this album was “Liberal Animation” in 1988, which was recorded with Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz.

The collaboration with Gurewitz led to the band signing with Epitaph Records, and releasing their third studio album “Ribbed.” Shortly after the release, Aaron Abeyta, aka El Hefe, replaced Steve Kidwiller on guitar, followed by “White Trash, Two Heebs and A Bean” being released in 1992. In 1994 they released their best selling album, “Punk in Drublic” and received support from the mainstream media, as well as reaching certified gold.

Following a series of record releases that all fared well, the band made the move to sign with Fat Wreck Chords in 2005. The band continued to release albums that challenged the social and political systems that they didn’t agree with, and did so in true punk fashion.

Live reviews

NOFX, as many bands playing the main stage at the Reading Festival do, once performed in front of a banner stating their name. No surprises there, except theirs was about the size of a tea towel, visible to only the front few rows (who found the whole thing hilarious, of course). As an act, it pretty much summed up what makes them continually endearing – their refusal to pander to the rock and roll game, and a bratty sense of humour that still dictates the legendary punk rock band’s every decision even as they enter middle age. They might never have had a hit, but the devotion of their fans is palpable, with everyone from those in their early teens to hardened, Mohawk sporting gentlemen who can remember a time before colour television belting back ever puerile lyric that emanates from singer Fat Mike’s mouth. Circle pits and rampant moshing are commonplace, but the atmosphere is one of joyous release rather than aggression. One word of advice though; if you’re in the front row and Fat Mike offers you a drink, perhaps politely decline – it’s probably not meant for human consumption, unless you’re in to some particularly racy stuff in your private life.

Fat Mike, El Hefe, Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin are the foursome that make up NOFX, a punk rock band of American origin. Although the band enjoyed their hay day (if, indeed, they even got to celebrate such a thing) in the 80s, boasting a pretty low score of hits, they nonetheless garnered a great deal of underground attention and built quite the fan following. NOFX are far from gimmicky, if anything the band is surprisingly low key and understated for their genre. But each member is truly talented and the band represents real, rockin’ American punk. They have mastered their musical capabilities to exceptional heights over the decades and slowly cemented their tongue-in-cheek bitterness only to combine the two in what was a brilliant, nostalgic and tongue in cheek performance. The crowd went crazy for classics such as 'Bottles To The Ground', 'We Called It America' and 'Murder The Government': they belted the lyrics along in full force, to the surprise and delight of the band. Fat Mike commented his delight that someone knew the lyrics because the band had long forgot them. All in all a great night.

sabraziz’s profile image

NOFX, the Californian punk rockers have been working as a group for thirty years now and over this time they have learned both how to play their music to an exceptional level and how to entertain the masses with their tongue in cheek performance style.

Something of a cult phenomena in the UK, the band never matched the commerciality they achieved in the States yet fans from far and wide have packed into London's Shepherd's Bush Empire to see the classic material played alongside the new stuff. Starting with a piercing '60%', the band begins with an unimaginable high amount of energy that never really seems to falter.

As the crowd claps, cheers and sings along through favourites including 'Bottles To The Ground' 'We Called It America' and 'Murder The Government'. There is a sense of bitterness in nearly all of Fat Mike's vocals and the audience enjoy mimicking this during their singalong. The band thanks the crowd sincerely and explains they are the reason they continue to visit British shores and give them a modern day taste of Americana punk.

Useless ID was amazing, they had awesome stage presence and their music was tight. Pears was explosive and super fast, I was so excited when they played some of my favorite songs (Snowflake in particular). Then NOFX took the stage, oh boy, Fat mike was pissed that Trump won the election. Given the recent political mayhem in the US, they played songs like "Murder The Government" "The IDIOT has Taken Over" and "Leaving Jesusland". Now let me say, If your not a fan of NOFX you wouldn't like this show. NOFX is famously lazy in their playing and stage presence, but that just added to the experience for me. The entire crowd was a pit when they played "Separation of Church and Skate" and I got elbowed in the side of the head a couple of times. 10/10 would go deaf again.

Appeal_To_Authority’s profile image

The concert was the day of trumps election, and the previous show mike sprained his ankle. Suffice to say Fat Mike was not having a good night, and it showed. The band was totally not into playing and you could tell they just wanted to get off stage. CLASSIC NOFX, awesome show 10/10 would get called a poser again.

Amazing as always.

Now I'm just writing something else to comply with the rule that a review must be at least 30 words long. Kind of an utterly moronic rule, since I don't really need more words to describe a performance such as this one.

It was awesome! They were entertaining, energetic and just great! Good music, great laughs! It was just so cool how they interact with the crowd! Looking forward to seeing them again!

NOFX announce UK headline shows as part of their farewell tour

NOFX will play four albums in full at their newly-announced UK shows

NOFX

NOFX have announced a brace of UK shows for what will be their last ever tour. The promoters of pop-punk festival Slam Dunk have revealed that they will be hosting "two extra standalone shows" that’ll serve as the LA quartet's final UK gigs. Fat Mike's band will play Temple Newsam in Leeds on May 26 and Hatfield Park on May 28. In Leeds, they will perform their classic 1994 album Punk In Drublic and 2006's Wolves In Wolves’ Clothing in full, while those attending the show in Hatfield will see the group perform all of 1997's So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes and 1992's White Trash, Two Heebs And A Bean . Back in September, Fat Mike revealed that his band would celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2023 by splitting up, saying "It's been an amazing run..."

The group's 40-cities-around-the-globe tour will begin on April 22 in Austin, Texas and come to a close in October 2024 in Los Angeles, California: "It's where we started, it's where we'll end," Fat Mike promised in September.

Announcing the first set of shows , NOFX say they will perform forty songs a night, including full albums and rarities, and they will never repeat a setlist to ensure that each show is unique. "This is not a final tour like Motley Crue or Black Sabbath," says Fat Mike, with a little dig at bands who've risen again after a supposed 'farewell' tour. "These are the very last shows FOFX will ever be playing. We are gonna play with all our hearts…With all our joy… And then we are done. We are done done."

Asked in December by Louder's Ian Winwood why he's decided to call time on NOFX's career, Fat Mike replied , "Because I don’t enjoy it like I used to. And if I don’t get loaded, I really don’t want to do it. I don’t need to be onstage hearing people applaud and dance. I don’t need that. Some people are addicted to that. I’ve started doing stand-up comedy and I like that way better, in front of 30 people... And 40 years is a fucking long time to be in a band." "I’m actually very excited about it," he added. "I’m not sad yet, but I know what we’re going to do. We’re going to play all of our songs and really, really give it our all. Generally when we play shows I just get wasted, and we’re good [when doing that], but we don’t think about the show, we just go out and have a good time. But this time we’re thinking, ‘Oh, no, we have to fucking rock, cos this is our last time’ in various cities. We’ve done it twice so far, in Vancouver and Edmonton… and we just fucking killed it. A lot of people said that they’d never seen us that good, which is pretty fucking awesome, when you hear that."

Tickets for the UK dates will be on sale tomorrow, January 18 .

NOFX Announce Final Tour: “These Are the Very Last Shows”

NOFX will say goodbye to their fans with a farewell tour beginning this spring and running through 2024. The veteran punk band has just announced initial dates for what will eventually be a 40-city run.

The “Final Tour” is billed as “40 Years, 40 Cities, 40 Songs Per Day.” In announcing the farewell trek, NOFX have unveiled dates for eight cities thus far, including two “campout” weekends. The tour kicks off with a camping festival at Carson Creek Ranch in Austin, Texas, on April 22nd and 23rd, and also includes a similar two-day camping stop in Columbus, Ohio, on June 24th and 25th.

Per the press release, “NOFX will perform 40 songs a night, including full albums and rarities, plus they will never repeat a setlist to ensure that each show is unique.”

The campout in Austin will also feature Pennywise, Circle Jerks, Face to Face, and more.

Frontman Fat Mike affirmed that this will indeed be the band’s last-ever tour. “This is not a final tour like Mötley Crüe or Black Sabbath,” he stated. “These are the very last shows NOFX will ever be playing. We are gonna play with all our hearts… With all our joy… And then we are done. We are done done.”

NOFX Announces Final Shows of Punk Legends’ Farewell Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

When punk legends NOFX first revealed plans for their farewell tour in September 2022, frontman Fat Mike promised, “Los Angeles will be the last place we play. It’s where we started, it’s where we’ll end.” Over two years later, the band has announced that their five-decade run will come to an end in October 2024 with a three-night stand in their native California.

Before that, however, NOFX have lined up another string of dates for their farewell tour, which was previously dubbed “40 Years, 40 Cities, 40 Songs” due to each gig’s unique 40-song setlist. However, the trek expanded overseas (including Australia and Europe) and now into 2024, with the next run of dates beginning April 6 in Fort Worth, Texas.
