Tronix pro Xenon travel rod: Gear review

tronixpro xenon travel rod review

Tronix pro Xenon travel rod:

So first off I will admit I have never been a fan of travel rods in beach caster format and the only “decent” one in my opinion that I had seen and tried was a Shimano Beastmaster beach caster but at £240 was a bit much for just travelling now and then, so whilst looking around I came across the Tronixpro Xenon travel rod for around the £139.99 mark and decided why not. With the rod all ordered and purchased I awaited it and when it turned up it was straight out to the man cave to have a look at this rod properly. So it’s a 12ft 6 inch beach caster, casting 3-6oz leads, It has 6 sections and comes in a nice black embroidered padded case that rolls up with a total length of just shy of 70cm so easily put into a case or a longer backpack. Taking it out of the case my first impression was wow! It’s sleek and looks good but as well all know looks are not everything but anyway all the whippings are in black and purple and are done well, the high build is all neat along with the graphics on it with the rod finished in a lovely gloss look. Ok so far so good! I was now wondering what I would get for only £139.00 in the department of actually fishing. Putting the rod together it was smooth and seamless and when fully constructed there is no wobble or give in any of the spigots which is nice as that has been quite a fault on other brands travel rods i have seen and tried and was something I was worried about as I couldn’t find any reviews on this rod. Looking at the rod you have a 24T light weight carbon blank with 9 genuine Fuji guides which are not too small even the smallest tip eye you could easily pass a Gemini link clip through it. There is a nice adjustable reel seat and a coaster to secure it in place and the rod is suitable for both fixed spool and multiplier use. Clamping the reel seat down with the coaster... It’s snug and secure with no give slide or wobble. There is a rubber butt cap at the bottom and nice Japanese shrink wrap on the bottom sections of the rod which gives plenty of room for putting the position of your reel and handling as well when the reel is in place whether casting or bringing fish in. Looking up the rod it’s a high gloss finish and looks worth more than what you have paid for sure, there is a white tip section for bite registration and low light. So far from just holding and putting together etc I’m actually very impressed and nothing has been spared by Tronixpro all in all great start First I attached my Penn battle 2 reel and a 5 oz lead on a pulley rig with a simulated bait and headed out over the fields nearby loaded with 20lb Asso HT and a 70lb shock leader I got into position and gave it a bit of oomph but not too much just a simple cast that went 80 yards no problem feeling everything during the cast its very forgiving and had a good stiff lower part of the rod with a softer whippy tip that recovers well. Feeling more confident just after one cast I decided it was make or break literally so with an off the ground cast set up I gave it some welly and gave it a lot of power and pulling my left hand in hard and watching it fly out it hit the 140 yard mark on the field with no problems at all it could clearly take a lot with no problems what so ever so with that switching my lead out for a 6oz and checking all the joints all was still in place and solid I gave it some welly again from off the ground and it flew again this time 135 yards after quite a few casts I was really starting to like it and the rod filled me with confidence in its ability I’m far from being a great caster but it was taking all I was throwing at it, I switched back to 5oz and continued casting achieving my best distance of 152 yards so it appeared that the rod is best suited to 5oz plus bait but has no issues with more. I had a 7oz dca with me so figured... I’d do it! It handled the 7’s no issue at all with an over the head thump but as its not rated for these I would obviously advise against it I’ve now used the Xenon travel rod a few times on the Bristol channel and it has performed well on clean through to mixed to light heavy grounds. It sits in the tide very well and the tip is sensitive enough pick up smaller bites and it won rip your rig out in stronger seas. Hooking into fish the tip goes over well even on a dogfish which worried me until I hooked into a 12lb conger later that night and it was being adamant it didn’t want to come in, the tip may be soft but mid section has power along with the butt section and bullied the conger onto the stones no issues at all. A week later it landed a double figure ray over sand. Whilst out with the rod I have noticed that it is tip end heavy but we have to remember this is a travel rod and not a match rod it’s only because of all the extra spigots that are obviously adding the weight to it, but it’s not uncomfortable at all in fact it doesn’t actually bother me but we’re saying it as it is with these reviews so definitely worth a mention. The second time I was using a Penn Fathom II 15 SD multiplier down low and it balanced the rod out quite well and performed exactly like its meant too so is happy with either fixed or multi use. Whilst out recently on Bossington beach hounding I used it again as I wanted to travel light but again it performed really well I hooked into some decent hounds that day giving it a good test and I was using whiplash braid with a mono shock and it was just as well suited as it was with mono line and the fact Bossington can be light heavy grounds it didn’t cause an issue at all. Overall this rod is a lot of bang for your buck it looks good it is aesthetically pleasing and performs well on the beach it is happy either pulling in small whiting or larger species going into double figures, I’ve even used as an uptider by removing the bottom section! I have since found out that a friend also bought one and took it to Africa and was pulling in small sharks with it! All in all this is a great option for a travel beach casting rod! Tronixpro really have done a great job with it and changed my mind on travel rods I will be buying a second one to match up for when travelling. GOOD POINTS: -At 70 cm in its case you can easily transport the rod. -Has full Fuji K guides. -Very forgiving on casting for all abilities. -Can easily put a bait 100+ yards. - Looks great. -Dependable rod which can handle most grounds. - Sensitive tip and sits in the tide well. -Cheap at £139.00 I would expect to pay a lot more Bad point: -It is a bit tip end heavy.

Hi guys Looking at getting a fairly stiff travel rod for targeting Barracuda from the shore . Haven’t seen many reviews on the tronix xenon travel rods and most travel rods won’t be about to blast heavy metals at distance . Anyone used one yet ? Any good or should I be looking else where . Any info welcomed . Cheers

That’s the first place I looked... doesn’t look like anyone’s reviewed on there yet Can’t seem to find any vids of the rod in action Read a few reviews saying the shimano beastmaster is a better stick but it’s £80 more ha

Not tried one. I have a SHAKESPEARE AGILITY 2 EXP BEACH https://www.anglingactive.co.uk/shakespeare-agility-2-exp-beach.html which is a bit shorter but fairly meaty. Handles 5oz and big bait for hounds no problem. Its a bit cheaper if you arent going to use it often

I have one of these and Happily use it and most importantly have faith in it, it has good bite detection and sits in the tide well. I have pulled in 10lb+ rays with it and some larger congers as well the only thing is... it is heavier at the top end due to all the extra spigots in the rod but other than that its great and for me it dosnt matter the weight bit its not much also has fuji k guides and has a great finish as well and very neat not sloppy at all. I've used it when i walk a long way on Bossington beach for ease i have also used it with fixed spool and multiplier and works well with both, balance was better with the penn fathom 15fs as lower down the rod. I have also used it as an uptider on my mates boat by leaving the last butt section off. The reel seat slides and is fixed with a coaster which clamps down well no issues, all the sections go together perfectly so have no wobble, i have zero worries about capability I'm happy to stick a 6oz lead on and cast OTG full power with a bait not had any issues a lot of rod for the money in my eyes.... you get people slating them but they negate to realise its a travel rod they wont be like match rod or a two piece etc all in all it hauls a fish in well, I dont worry about casting or breaking it and it performs like a normal beachcaster should.

cheers Rick, Those beastmasters are a great bit of kit (miss mine) and is probably a bit better on bite detection but for double the priceit's not a lot extra really. But the xenon i bought after i had a break in and they knicked my beasty as well as other gear :/ I will be buying another one to match up soon as a lot of travelling coming up

Tronixpro Competition Performance

Jane Hyde

An effortless response to overhead casting should win this new clean ground rod many friends, but it won’t suit everyone, says John Holden

Tronixpro Competition Performance RRP: £399.99

Well, the bag is quite impressive. Knitted mesh material, Velcro fastener, comfortable padding. Unlike the typical cheesy rod bag, this one is also smartly embroidered with Tronixpro Competition Performance. If first impressions count, we’re off to a good start.

The rod is three-piece, each section tucked safely in its own partition. Plugged together they make a 4.2 metres (13ft 9in) beach rod that weighs a tad over 480g, featherweight even by modern standards. There is also a 4.5m version. And it’s slim. The 23mm diameter butt tapers to 21mm at the reel seat, the mid-section goes from 17mm to 15mm, the very tip shrinks to a minuscule 1.92mm – and that’s measured on top of a generous layer of reflective finish.

According to Tronixpro , the blank is made from a mix of premium Japanese carbon. The noticeable stiffness is probably exaggerated a little by the rod’s low weight and slimness but be in no doubt that this pole is meatier than it looks almost all the way up to the tip.

Blank aside, the Competition Performance is conventional in a minimalist way. The fixed reel seat is Fuji, as are the rings. The bottom six are KWAGs grading down from a 20mm ring at the butt. For clarity given the wide variation in ring specifications, I measure ring bore rather than maker’s stated size. The top two side rings are single-legged.

The plug-in joints are excellent, the female end reinforced with a metal band, the male side backed by a short section of textured rubbery stuff to provide extra grip for wet fingers. The butt grip is textured and rubbery too, but why, oh why are there no grips either side of the reel seat? Fair enough, this being a fixed-spool rod our hand will be on the seat when we’re casting. But it’s necessary to hold a rod above the seat for cranking in. A proper grip isn’t too much to expect, especially on a £400 rod. I wound on a few turns of rubber tape for better feel, more security and to protect the blank. For although the glossy black finish is pristine straight out of the bag, it can scuff.

A flexible tip is great for bite detection and a good many other things. Some manufacturers get that flexibility with special glass, in which case the tip will probably be about the same diameter as on lesser beach rods. Others take the low diameter route using carbon, as Tronixpro has done. Both ways work. The important factor is how that flexible tip marries up to the rest of the blank. This is where things get complicated, so I won’t go there except to make one point that needs careful consideration.

CASTING STYLE

How a tip and the rest of the rod are designed determines, among other things, which casting styles do best or even work at all. Some of these rods are aimed at pendulum work, some for off-ground styles, some for overhead casting. The majority are fairly fussy in this respect, so it’s essential to pick the rod that suits you, and ideally to try before buying.

In my view, the Competition Performance is not a good pendulum rod, nor will it suit some off-ground methods such as the Brighton style that create strong, early resistance. I have no reason to question the tip’s durability. The issue is that the rod just doesn’t load and release how I want it to with those particular casts. Others may find it perfectly fine. Overhead style and simple off-ground styles? Great casts, lovely feel, all things bright and beautiful.

Powered by the overhead cast that’s become so popular with long fixed-spool rods, the Competition Performance is in its element, coming alive and easily throwing farther than generally necessary. Setting up with the rod held high and the leader drop such that the sinker hovers just above the ground, I needed no more than a smooth pull down with my left hand. The rod did the rest. Powered this way, the blank action that put me off pendulum now produces smooth compression, clean release and an effortless, towering trajectory. Laying the sinker on the beach directly away from the tip ring, then using the same left hand pull gave the same crisp flow plus a little more yardage.

Tronixpro claims a weight range of 100-190g with an optimum of 120-150g. The spot-on sinker for me turned out to be 125g in combination with 0.30mm mono mainline and appropriate shockleader. Since I would only use this rod for clean beach work in decent conditions, 30-35lb would do well. Heavier loads, different mainline and rough weather would call for a rethink. Your mileage may vary.

tronixpro xenon travel rod review

Who on earth came up with the decision to top out a beach rod with 6mm bore side rings and a minuscule 5.5mm bore tip ring? This is an extraordinary choice for two clear reasons. First off, every angler that ever chucked baits from the beach knows perfectly well that now and again, and sometimes every cast, bits of weed stick to the line and especially to the leader knot. Most beach rod ringing takes this into account in order to minimise the nuisance, so that all but the biggest chunks can be wound down to the reel and cleaned off there rather than you having to do the spring cleaning at the tip.

One of my test sessions was plagued by that grassy stuff with magnetic attraction to fishing line. Time after time the tip ring clogged solid with clumps no bigger than an aspirin – bad news with a decent fish on the line. Then there’s casting. This is probably the first time in a very long career that a rod has dictated which leader I should use. A standard overhand/uni leader knot tied in 35lb line just about runs cleanly. With 50lb mono, the knot is on the limit for clean passage. You know what happens should a beefy cast wrap the leader knot around the tip ring or the next few below it. Bye-bye ring…. or worse. Tapered leaders are a wise option on this rod; mandatory, perhaps.

tronixpro xenon travel rod review

THE VERDICT

Overall, though, the Tronixpro Competition Performance came across as an enjoyable, competent rod for the lighter end of clean ground work using fixed-spool reels and reasonably light lines. Though I preferred the 125g set-up, it is equally competent with 150g or even a bit more lead weight. Bite detection is in the premier league and the tip sits well in the tide, which is often as important as detection itself. The rod seems to magnify every little twitch, so that you can feel what the seabed is like as the rig comes back. Little fish felt bigger than they turned out to be.

Build niggles aside, this is a better than average rod in blank engineering, handling and performance. Unlike so many fairly specialist rods it makes no great demands on the user. Its effortless response to a simple overhead casting method alone should win many friends. But that fairly unusual combination of bendy tip and significant lower stiffness won’t suit everybody. Call it the Marmite factor.

Tronixpro Blaze Fixed Spool line and Xenon Tapered Shock Leader Reviewed

Tronixpro time and time again come up with the latest angling innovations and now their tronixpro blaze fixed spool line and xenon tapered shock leaders are at the sea angling forefront..

Their latest technology of mixing polymers into various thickness and colours and finding low diameters lines with breaking strains that almost defy all reasoning, so I was quite happy to receive their Tronixpro Blaze fixed spool Line for review.

Blaze spool

The Tronixpro Blaze fixed spool line comes on 300 mm spools available in three colours, 0-3mm-15.3lb, 0.33mm 17.7lb and 0.36mm-21.7lb.

Blaze Fixed Spool Line

I opted for the Blaze 17.70lb which suits my style of fishing on the Essex coast where I am fishing over fairly clean beaches but there are snags that I do need to pull through every now and then, plus a chance of a very heavy fish to land!

The Tronixpro Blaze fixed spool line is low stretch which is great for continental fishing and with its silicone coating has to be less friction through the guides when casting.

Blaze main line on reel

Yes it ticks all the boxes! I gave this line a good thrashing for a few weeks fishing in wafts of Essex weed and tussling with some large bass.

How did it fair? Well, pretty damn good! With some fishing lines, no matter how much you pay for them every now and then there is a tendency for line twist and the odd knot when casting, no problem with this line. It smoothly peeled off the reel and through the guides on the cast every time.

The silicone coating makes for a very tight small knot with great strength when attaching the leader line, because we all know that if the main line is going to break under pressure it will go at the leader knot.

The memory free line stops all those wrinkles when tying knots and keeps it in top condition for that bit longer.

Blaze leader knot

The nitty gritty side of things which always tends to be very technical but us anglers always want to know those all-important stats.

Silicone Coating

review product supplied sticker

Hardly any stretch in this line, those bites are emphasised through the rod tip, making for a more exciting fishing experience.

The Tronxpro Blaze Fixed spool mainline retails and a very reasonably priced £5.99 for 300m which compares very favourably with most of the top class lines.

Tronixpro Xenon Tapered Shock Leader

The Tronixpro Xenon Tapered shock leader comes in two breaking strains, 15lb to 50lb (0.35mm to 60mm) and 15lb to 60lb (0.35mm to0.70mm)

I opted for the 0.35-70mm(15-60lb) which suits my style of casting and fishing, “whack em hard” and take no prisoners!

Blaze main line and Xenon leaders

The Xenon leader comes in 5x 15m lengths, I tend to cut the first couple of foot off of any tapered leader, simply because it makes sense to tie to a slightly thicker leader on to a lower diameter main line making for stronger overall knot strength. Ensure that you wet the knot before tightening as normal.

Neat And Tidy

What I did find was the ease of tying a very small neat leader knot that flew through the continental rod rings without a sound and that doesn’t happen to often!

Once again the Xenon leaders are made from advanced copolymer which makes for a strong but supple leader and using them on my South East coast sandy beaches where in rough conditions abrasion on leaders can be a problem I found very minimal damage.

Blaze leader knot

The actual leader knot was neat and tight making for less friction through the rings when casting and with those tiny eyes of my continental rods makes it that much more important for comfortable fishing.

Tronixpro Xenon Tapered Leaders (5x15m) retail at £5.99

Summing up the Tronixpro Blaze fixed spool line matched with the Tronixpro Xenon Tapered Shock Leader work extremely well together and will be top on my list for Essex beach fishing.

Tronix Fishing

Fishing with the Banzai Beach

tronixpro xenon travel rod review

User Review by Gary Seddon

I bought the Tronixpro Banzai Beach to use on marks I don’t fancy risking my old Cobra TT V2 or Tronixpro Xenon Match when the ground is uneven or slippery underfoot. I have mobility issues and have fallen over more often than I’d like on some marks I fish. At £149.99, I don’t mind taking risks I’d usually avoid with my more expensive kit.

You get a fair bit of rod for your money mind. It’s a moody looking bit of kit with the matt finish offset by the yellow decals. The top of the tip section is reflective and shows up well in the dark with a light shining on it. The 24T blank is light and feels pretty much like my 13’ 6” rods during the cast despite the extra four inches. It is fitted with K guides, and the rod comes with a Tronixpro Coaster Reel Seat to use the rod reel up or down. A bonus is that you can use either a multiplier or fixed spool depending on how you plan to fish your session. I prefer using a fixed spool bait runner when fishing close in as I find it easier to cast short with a fixed spool. I’ve recently started using bait runners as I find it easier to set the reel to free spool and have the drag already dialled in, in case a bigger fish hits my baits. I reckon if a reel can handle a 30lb carp, it’s up to the job of landing hounds, rays, and conger too.

Banzai Beach

The butt and mid-section of the Banzai Beach are pretty pokey, and the blank is rated from 4 to 7oz plus bait. I’ve found five and six ounces are suited to the marks I fish with this rod. The tip is very good and registers crab rattles and bites from the bane of autumn fishermen, the dreaded pin whiting. Although Tronixpro designed this blank for beach fishing at long range, I’m here to tell you that with a 6oz lead, it stood up to the tidal flow of the Mersey on an 8.2-meter tide. If it can cope with the Mersey, it will cope with any conditions you will likely encounter on a beach.

I’ve fished Cleveleys and Five Barred Gate recently with the surf rolling in carrying weed on both occasions, but the rod was more than up to the job of holding bottom and registering bites.

The Banzai Beach has a forgiving blank and will suit someone who hasn’t got much casting experience. It’s the sort of rod that will see a new angler through those first clumsy overhead thumps and on to off the ground and aerial casts like the Hatteras and Pendulum. I cast off the ground and have managed 120 yard casts consistently on the field. Don’t let the 120 yards put you off though, I have back, and shoulder issues that limit power and technique and an experienced caster will be able to do a fair bit more with this blank.

Banzai Beach

I arrived at the Café on Cleveleys promenade recently, hoping for better than my session at Five Barred Gate the week before. I’d had one pin whiting fishing a match. I’d pegged on a flat, bland-looking bit of beach and had one bite all night. Less than 100 yards from my peg, a mate had fish after fish, but he was into a gully. That’s match fishing for you, though. If there are no fish on your peg, it doesn’t matter how far you can cast or what bait you are using.

I fished a 9m tide using a bait runner fixed spool on the Tronixpro Banzai Beach with a loop rig with 1/0 hooks into the same depression I had caught my PB smoothhound from. It’s a section of sand and pebbles caused by the tide eddying round a breakwater, and it’s a permanent feature on the beach that usually holds good fish. It’s about 60 yards out, so even with an offshore wind right in my face, I was still able to get the bait where I wanted it. The flood tide was a bit of a pain with weed constantly sliding up the line and catching on the rod tip, which meant clearing it every retrieve. I had one bite on the flood that resulted in a four-inch pin whiting. Fortunately, the wind slacked off as the tide turned, and the weed stopped being an issue. Sadly, it didn’t improve the fishing much, and I counted myself lucky getting another pin whiting before finally landing one of about nine inches long. Not my best outing, but at least I’d finally got a few fish on the Banzai. I’ve been having a bit of bad luck with new rods recently with blank after blank on the new rods while catching on my older kit. Mind you. It was a lovely night with the whole section pretty much to myself. As much as I enjoy the company of someone now and then, I’m as happy by myself doing something I enjoy.

Banzai Beach

I’m impressed with the Banzai Beach. It casts well, and bite detection is good. At my last count, there are 11 rods in the Banzai range starting at £99.99, and the most expensive is only £155.99

I’m probably going to look at the Banzai Power , Banzai BZ6 or Banzai BZ7 for fishing the Mersey for Conger eels. The range covers every option you will ever need to catch fish, from scratching for small species to bullying that fish of a lifetime through the surf. With 11 options, you can buy a rod that suits your style of fishing and the conditions you will face fishing your regular marks for very reasonable money.

When you have a limited budget for fishing like myself, you have to have faith in the kit you can afford, and, in my experience, Tronixpro rods do what you need when you need at very sensible money.

Remember to be safe out on the shore. It can be dangerous, especially if you are new to shore fishing. I’ve always spoken to locals and gotten to know an area before trying a low water session on beach marks. You are better off not fishing a mark than taking the risks some do. You’ll live longer, and your family will appreciate you taking the trouble to make sure you get home.

If, like myself, you do occasionally fish alone, make sure someone knows where you will be and set an ‘overdue’ time so they can call for help if you can’t be contacted.

One final thing, I know it’s a pain having to shift someone else’s rubbish, but if you carry a spare plastic bag, you can always pop any rubbish on your fishing spot without too much effort. If we all keep where we fish tidy, it’ll be better for us as anglers and the wildlife too.

As ever, tight lines and stay safe.

  1. Tronix pro Xenon travel rod: Gear review

Tronix pro Xenon travel rod: So first off I will admit I have never been a fan of travel rods in beach caster format and the only "decent" one in my opinion that I had seen and tried was a Shimano Beastmaster beach caster but at £240 was a bit much for just travelling now and then, so whilst looking around I came across the Tronixpro Xenon travel rod for around the £139.99 mark and ...

  2. Tronix pro xenon travel rod ? Any good

Looking at getting a fairly stiff travel rod for targeting Barracuda from the shore . Haven't seen many reviews on the tronix xenon travel rods and most travel rods won't be about to blast heavy metals at distance . Anyone used one yet ? Any good or should I be looking else where . Any info welcomed . Cheers

  14. Tronixpro Xenon Power Rod Reviews

However, the tip on the Tronixpro Xenon Power perfectly complements the taper and natural bend of the rod and still give an extraordinary level of bite indication. This subtle tip also helps bed the lead-in and stops the grips pulling out in the 11/12 meter tides in my home grounds which a lot of power rods have as one of their downfalls.

  15. Tronixpro Competition Performance

According to Tronixpro, the blank is made from a mix of premium Japanese carbon. The noticeable stiffness is probably exaggerated a little by the rod's low weight and slimness but be in no doubt that this pole is meatier than it looks almost all the way up to the tip. Blank aside, the Competition Performance is conventional in a minimalist way.

The Tronixpro Xenon Tapered shock leader comes in two breaking strains, 15lb to 50lb (0.35mm to 60mm) and 15lb to 60lb (0.35mm to0.70mm) I opted for the .35-70mm (15-60lb) which suits my style of casting and fishing, "whack em hard" and take no prisoners! The Xenon leader comes in 5x 15m lengths, I tend to cut the first couple of foot off ...

  20. Tronixpro Banzai Beach User Review

User Review by Gary Seddon. I bought the Tronixpro Banzai Beach to use on marks I don't fancy risking my old Cobra TT V2 or Tronixpro Xenon Match when the ground is uneven or slippery underfoot. I have mobility issues and have fallen over more often than I'd like on some marks I fish. At £149.99, I don't mind taking risks I'd usually avoid with my more expensive kit.
