Check out Atlantis Submarines Waikiki, the most technologically advanced passenger submarines in the world and the only true submarines operating in these waters. You'll descend 100 feet into another version of paradise - one hidden even from the people of Hawaii for centuries. Your submarine journey will take you to a dive site filled with tropical fish, coral, sea turtles, and sunken shipwrecks and airplanes that attract all of this marvelous sea life.

To observe the magnificent aqua-blue ocean abundant with marine life of Hawaii from a submarine is a "must do" and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The sub has a spacious air-conditioned interior. There is a scenic shuttle boat ride of about 10 minutes from the Hilton Pier to the submarine's dive site. A you transfer to the deck of the submarine you will descend a nearly-vertical ladder that has seven rungs. For this reason children under 36" in height are not permitted, nor are guests with limited mobility who are not able to descend this ladder on their own.

As your descent begins the interior of the sub, your clothing, your skin ... everything you see will start to change color and take on an azure hue. During the 45 minute dive you will encounter a shipwreck that sea turtles love to call home! Many tropical fish that are found no where else in the world are attracted to a sunken airplane and other FAD's (fish aggregating devices) that have been placed on the bottom. Once in a while other marine life is spotted as well ... eagle and manta rays, dolphins, even humpback whales have been spotted on this tour!

Kevin at Falls

Hawaii is the most isolated archipelago (fancy word for island chain) in the world. Because of its isolation, our state has the highest percentage of species that exist nowhere else on Earth! Many of these unique species are fish and coral, so you absolutely must take in the marine life when you are here. Some visitors choose to snorkel or dive, but for those guest who don't want to get wet, they can experience the underwater world by looking out the window of a REAL submarine! Imagine going home and telling your friends that you not only saw fish found nowhere else in the world; you dove 100 feet below the surface. Have any of your friends been on a submarine dive??? Probably not!

The interior of the submarine feels much like the cabin of an airplane – comfortably air conditioned and pressurized as you go to depth. Your seat faces outward so you can look directly into the gorgeous ocean blue. If you like more leg room and larger viewing ports, book the Premium Submarine. The Premium Submarine also has individual seats with backs, so if you need extra lumbar support, this is the way to go.

The dives are narrated (make sure you pick a dive time that narrates in your preferred language), so you can learn about what you are seeing as it swims by. The submarine visits sunken airplanes and shipwrecks and it is amazing to not only see this underwater wreckage, but also observe the reef system and marine life that has developed on and around it.

The Submarine is great for kids – they LOVE diving to 100 feet in an actual submarine. Many younger kids really aren't comfortable snorkeling in the ocean, so this is the best way for them to experience our Hawaiian waters. Just be sure any children in your party are at least 36" tall and that they can handle going down and up the ladder on their own to board and exit the sub – children cannot be carried up or down this ladder.

Things to do in Waikiki: Atlantis Submarine Oahu

If you’re searching for things to do on Oahu outside of the typical surfing, shopping and soaking up the rays then look no further. Atlantis Submarines offer submarine tours so you can view species up close and experience what life is like at the bottom of the ocean without even getting wet.

One of Hawaii’s most unique tours, offered on Maui, Big Island and Oahu, has been running since 1988. The submarines are environmentally safe as they are battery powered so they release no pollutants into the ocean and make minimal noise, keeping the fish happy.

A perfect sunny day as always in Waikiki, the meeting point was on the Hilton Pier at the north end of Waikiki Beach. It was peaceful and calm on the pier as we waited for our boat. Everyone sat quietly observing the view of the surrounding mountains, other travelers enjoying water activities on the beach and the cobalt blue fish glistening from the sun in the water below. As the Atlantis Discovery approached we all became lively with excitement.

a hand holding the boarding pass with blue water in the background

It was a short but smooth ride out to the submarine cruising past surfers and sailboats. The further out we went, the more Waikiki came together as a whole, and we could appreciate the beauty of this city from afar.

The captain stopped to locate the submarine which was an ideal opportunity to take photos of the shoreline and an unobstructed Diamond Head. After a few minutes the submarine sent up a location bubble, this is to ensure there are no boats above so it can ascend safely. Soon after the submarine emerged from beneath the surface.

the Atlantis submarine above water

We boarded the vessel by walking down a steep ladder from the top and proceeded to take our seats. Once everyone was seated and the latch secure we dove down to the bottom and were immediately surrounded by a multitude of fish.

The further we went the more interesting it became. There was 60kg trevally which is the most aggressive fish in the ocean surrounding Oahu. They’ll ram anything that gets in their way, including scuba divers which made me very happy to be in the safety of the submarine.

We also spotted a few puffer fish. These are illegal to serve at any restaurant in Hawaii but certain species can be a local delicacy in Japan.

A silhouette of a fish taken under water

At the depth of 100 feet, we soon approached the artificial reefs which cost Atlantis Adventures millions of dollars over the years to provide a safe home for the Hawaiian sea life. These reefs have been created from old airplanes, sunken ships, and other metal structures. Before sinking any structure it must be completely cleaned of oil, paint, and anything else nasty to the environment to ensure the health of the water and everything in it.

These reefs are used to help create food, give fish a safe place to hide and the turtles a place to sleep. We also passed the natural reef created by ancient lava flow. Don’t expect to see bright colors in the coral, the UV from the water changes colors this deep down. If you’re wearing red clothing it’ll now appear more purple, whereas orange will become fluorescent.

An underwater image of the artificial reef in Waikiki bay

Our bubbly guide was great at informing us about all the different species we could see out our windows, and about the importance of keeping our oceans clean. He pointed out a white reef shark sitting on the seafloor, moray eels lurking in holes, large green sea turtles sleeping on the deck of a shipwreck and large black sea urchins ready to spike anything that comes near.

One of my most memorable sights from this Hawaii visit was watching four eagle rays gliding ever so elegantly through the water, flapping their fins in synchronization as if they were birds soaring through the sky. The schools of Moorish Idol and bright Yellow Tangs were so pretty fluttering around against the vivid blue water.

An image taken underwater of fish in an artificial reef

At the end of our journey, the captain sent up the location air bubble to warn any boats on the surface. In addition, another Atlantis boat above water makes sure it’s safe for the sub to surface. Not long after we quickly emerged, watching the water turn from a cobalt blue to turquoise in a flurry of bubbles. The larger bubbles sparkled in the Hawaiian sun.

Being on board the boat and the submarine was such an interesting and entertaining way to spend an afternoon in Waikiki. It was an excellent means to learn more about our ecosystem and see the world from a perspective I have never experienced before.

When you enter the resort, you’ll head straight back to the beach area. You’ll either see the Atlantis boat bobbing in the water or you’ll see the check in station.

After you’re checked in, you’ll have the option of taking a photo with their photographer (that they will sell to you later) or you can snap some selfies.

Image of the waiting area of the Waikiki Atlantis Submarine.

Then, you’ll hang out on the dock until it’s time to leave. There are lots of seats and it’s all under cover. Plus, you can see all sorts of Waikiki beach activities.

There’s also a trash can, in case you need to throw out any food/beverage before your Waikiki Atlantis Submarine ride.

Short Boat Ride to Submarine

Since Waikiki Beach is pretty shallow, the only way to enter the submarine is to take a boat about a mile away from shore.

Image of an Atlantis boat that will ferry you to the Waikiki Atlantis Submarine off the coast of Waikiki.

Think of it as a short Oahu boat tour. It takes about 10-15 minutes and you’ll get some incredible views of Waikiki and Diamond Head.

There’s an upstairs open-air section or you can stay downstairs. There are plenty of seats in both areas.

There is plenty of outdoor and indoor seating on the boat that takes you to the Oahu Submarine Tour.

During this boat ride, you will watch a brief safety video, have the option to use the restroom (there are NO restrooms on the sub), and grab a cup of water to stay hydrated.

Once you reach the submarine, they will direct you to a line so you can climb down into the submarine with the rest of your group.

In order to do the Waikiki Atlantis Submarine ride, you'll need to climb down a really steep ladder.

You will need to turn around and climb down a steep 11-step ladder. My 4-year-old was scared and my husband ended up holding him as they climbed down together.

Submarine Tour in Waikiki

Once you enter the submarine, you’ll see there are giant circular windows right in front of you. Two people share one large window.

You’ll start off going 60 feet under water and then you’ll gradually get to about 100 feet under the sea.

Image of an underwater ship wreck off the coast of Waikiki.

The major Waikiki attractions are the under water Japanese seaweed farms, a WWII plane wreckage, and a sunken ship.

The captain is really good about turning around so that the other side of the submarine can also get views of the items under water.

The Waikiki submarine is one of the best kid friendly things to do in Waikiki. Image of a boy in a submarine.

Along the way, you’ll see fish and other sea creatures pop up sporadically. Because this is an ocean, they cannot guarantee you’ll see any fish, sea turtles, or whales. It varies so much from tour to tour.

We ended up seeing a few schools of fish, a sea turtle, and a couple of random fish that went in front of our window.

Waikiki Boat Ride to Shore

After the submarine ride, we climbed back out and onto the boat. They had us wait on the lower deck because they already had the next group loaded on the upper deck.

After wiping down all the windows, they got the next group on board and we were able to move up to the upper deck.

From the Waikiki boat ride, you'll get to see the Waikiki submarine go under water for the next tour!

I highly recommend going upstairs because you’ll have an up close view of the submarine going under water. It’s really cool!

And the rest of the Waikiki boat ride is nice and relaxing.

This Waikiki boat ride from the Atlantis submarine ride is short but awesome! Image of a dad taking photos while two young boys watch the water.

How does the Oahu Submarine Tour Compare with the Maui Submarine Tour?

When we were on Maui a few years ago, the submarine left directly from the harbor in Lahaina instead of taking a boat to get there.

While underwater in Maui, they had divers who would come up to the windows and show passengers different sea life so everyone got an up-close view.

But, the Maui one doesn’t show any wreckage and the submarine isn’t as big or as new.

The Highlight of this Waikiki Tour and What You Should Look Out For

For our family, the highlight was simply going on a submarine ride. It’s something unique that many people never have the opportunity to do. And my kids LOVED bragging to everyone they met that they had ridden in a real submarine.

There are a couple of things families should know:

  • There are NO restrooms on the submarine. So, I encourage you to have your family use the facilities on the boat instead.
  • If anyone in your family gets motion sickness, they do have sick bags that are easily accessible.
  • The ladder to get in/out of the submarine is super steep and they want kids to do it on their own instead of being carried.

How Much Does it Cost and Where is it Located?

You’ll find the Oahu Atlantis Submarine tour at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. You can get discounted parking ($4) for 4 hours of parking in the self-parking garage.

Get your Waikiki Atlantis Submarine tickets online or at the kiosk at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Image of the Atlantis Submarine kiosk at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.

There’s a ticket kiosk near the swimming pool area at the resort if you want to get same day tickets. From there, you’ll walk along the beach and onto the dock for the formal check in.

If you are sure you want to do this Oahu activity, you’ll definitely want to reserve tickets before you arrive. Adult tickets start at $133 and children start at $66.50. Prices vary depending on restrictions/availability.

So, is the Waikiki Atlantis Submarine Worth It?

If you’d like a kid friendly boat ride in Waikiki where you can see gorgeous views of Diamond Head and ride in the biggest submarine in the world to see wreckage at the bottom of the ocean, then TOTALLY.

My kids really enjoyed the experience of the little boat ride and getting to ride in an authentic submarine in Hawaii. In fact, they said it was one of the best Hawaii kids activities we did on our most recent trip.

Is this Oahu submarine tour worth it? My kids say YES! Image of a boy wearing a shark shirt throwing 2 shakas in a Waikiki submarine.

But, if you’re going mainly to see tropical fish, sea turtles, and other sea creatures, you might have better luck at the Waikiki Aquarium or Sea Life Park . These are some easy things to do in Honolulu with kids .

My husband and boys were pretty stoked just with the boat ride and submarine experience, so they were happy campers. I had hoped to see more fish, so I was a little disappointed.

But, all in all, I’d say we had a really fun morning doing something the whole family could participate in. And it was definitely one of the easiest Oahu adventures and most fun fun things to do in Waikiki.

I hope this Waikiki submarine tour review helped you figure out whether or not to add this to your list of family things to do in Oahu.

HOW TO BOOK THE ATLANTIS SUBMARINE TOUR FROM WAIKIKI

When I did the Atlantis Submarine Tour with my family, I booked with GetYourGuide , which is basically the number one online booking service for Oahu activities. The booking confirmation is immediate, you can see thousands of reviews and you can cancel anytime prior to 24 hours before the activity.

I’ve seen that especially during peak season, the submarine tours on Oahu can be booked out more than a week in advance. Therefore, if the island is packed or you are visiting in June or July you should book it online now. You can always cancel closer to the date with a $0 cancellation fee and immediate refund.

TOUR DESCRIPTION & MY EXPERIENCE ON THE OAHU ATLANTIS SUBMARINE TOUR

After locating the pier at the western end of Waikiki, we had to wait for about 30 minutes on the seating at the pier. However, we didn’t have to wait to board the boat for our first bit of entertainment. Several Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles popped their heads up right there next to the pier to the delight of the tourists waiting to board the boat.

We didn’t really need anything for this tour. I just brought my camera and a bottle of water. The shuttle boat docked and you could see everyone inspecting our vessel and wondering where the submarine was.

How these tours works are that first, the double-story shuttle boat ferries passengers out to deeper water to the submarine meeting point. The passengers then transition via a small walkway and head down the stairs into the submarine.

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

The boat cruise was a little surprise addition to the tour and was actually very pleasant. Many people do a Waikiki boat tour like this as an entire activity. We cruised out in perfect conditions and all of the passengers were able to admire the azure blue waters and the high-rises along the strip of Waikiki Beach .

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

After about ten minutes, we reached the submarine meeting point. Our captain told us to keep an eye out for the submarine to surface as he was in direct contact via radio with the submarine pilot. All of a sudden, a circle of bubbles appeared and then the submarine popped up above the surface. It then navigated over to the side of our boat and unloaded its passengers before we made our way down the ladder and inside the submarine.

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

Inside, there are two rows of seats that each have their own individual portal window. You can sit on either side and the pilot does a good job to make sure each side gets to see all of the wrecks. They can’t predict which side turtles or sharks will be on but they are professionals and do their best to make sure all passengers see as much as possible.

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

The submarine pilots shut the hatch and we begin descending from the surface. At first, we are just in the middle of nowhere with only sand on the surface but quickly our guide begins to talk us through the landmarks we will be seeing over the next 45 minutes.

The major attractions throughout the Oahu Atlantis Submarine Tour are underwater Japanese seaweed farms, a WWII plane wreckage, and a sunken ship. However, throughout these sites, you will come across schools of Barracuda, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, Black Tip Sharks, Eagle Rays, and a plethora of marine life. Nothing is guaranteed but all of these species use the wrecks as their home or resting/feeding place so there is always an unbelievable amount of action around the wrecks.

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

Less than 1% of people ever go to the depth of 100ft but on this journey, you will make it to that benchmark. It is kind of like an airplane as it is pressurized so you don’t feel any impacts or ear-popping but there is a little depth gauge inside the submarine and the guide loved to let us know that we have hit triple figures.

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

As someone who has scuba-dived at plane wrecks, shipwrecks, and different sites all over the world, this was still an excellent tour in my opinion. However, if you have never been scuba-diving this tour will blow your mind. It will be a completely new experience and the first and maybe last time you will ever be able to witness the marine life and underwater world 100ft below the surface. It’s a great activity for kids and will leave them with many questions about the ocean.

atlantis submarine tours waikiki

WHERE TO BOARD THE ATLANTIS SUBMARINE IN WAIKIKI

The exact meeting spot is on the pier that is over the water out the front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. If you put Tropics Bar and Grill into Google Maps you will get to the right spot. Tropics Bar and Grill is a beachfront restaurant right in front of the pier and it’s impossible to miss the pier, there is only one in that area and it has a big arch over the walkway.

PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE ATLANTIS SUBMARINE TOUR

While it may be an amazing experience, it is very difficult to get great photos from within the submarine. The windows are quite small. They are big enough to see through but hard to compose a nice photo sometimes through the portal. The reflection from the glass also made it difficult. However, the main setback for nice photos is that at 100ft of depth, there just isn’t that much color on offer. The deeper you go, the more color is lost and eventually, the entire scene looks like a faded blue or purple. There is no red, green, orange, or yellow at that depth. I would suggest just enjoying the ride and taking it all in with maybe one or two snaps on your phone but even with my photos, you can see there are limitations.

HISTORY OF THE OAHU ATLANTIS SUBMARINE

Our guide from within the submarine did a great job at not just pointing out the marine life and underwater wrecks but also sharing the history of the region with us. Atlantis Submarine Adventures has been operating in Hawaii all the way back since 1988. They’ve also been acquiring, purchasing, and placing wrecks nearby to Waikiki for decades to create perfect scuba-dive and submarine points of interest.

One of the wrecks the Atlantis Submarine passes is the YO 257 wreck, which is a 175-foot-long navy oiler.

The Atlantis XIV Submarine is the largest hi-tech passenger submarine in the world. It was designed by Dennis Hurd, who is the CEO of the company.

WHERE TO STAY ON OAHU

  • Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort  (Overall Favorite) : In the heart of Waikiki, this high-end resort is right on the beach with a private lagoon.
  • Sheraton Waikiki   (Luxury) : A luxury resort with the most amazing infinity pool on the island, which overlooks the beach.
  • Ewa Hotel Waikiki : (Value):  Ewa Hotel is just one block back from the beach and is just over $150 USD.
