The After-Hours Support

David Witter - Corporate Traveller

David Witter

We’re the team that pick up the phone when there’s an emergency and it’s, say, 11pm or 2am. It’s stressful when your travel plans are thrown off, so a big part of our job is staying calm and reassuring the traveller (who’s often in a panic) that everything is taken care of. It really is the best feeling to have helped someone in need, and made sure they can get to a meeting or home safely.

Looking back to COVID times, that was a period where travellers needed more support than ever – such as borders closing, restrictions changing, hotels being closed or flights cancelled. It's all in a day’s (or evening’s) work for us though – we're used to it!

The Onboarding Manager

Onboarding Manager

Nick Niu

Onboarding is the bridge between when you first start working with your Travel Management Company, to when you’re settled with our Customer Success team.  I take pride in being a proficient and detail-oriented project manager, always striving to simplify processes while achieving our key Customer Objectives. Additionally, I'm committed to providing industry-leading training and technical support.

Being an Onboarding Manager also means I get to dive into the unique people and culture of each business we work with. It's not just essential for our partnership; it's also a truly enjoyable experience because no two companies are alike!

And setting up with Corporate Traveller? It's a breeze! In May 2023, it took an average of just 28 days to get everything in order. So, you'll be good to go in just a few short weeks.

Fantastic service isn’t a “nice to have”.

For travel to be truly effortless, it takes a team that understands your business, understands your travel policy, and knows your travellers by first name. With a team like the above behind you, you’ll be flying high in no time!

Significant increase in international business travel

corporate traveller victoria australia

New data reveals eye-watering increase in international business travel in the last six months

New data from Australia’s leading travel management provider for SMEs has uncovered a resurgence in international business travel six months on from the initial border reopening in November last year.

April saw the biggest growth in international flight bookings – a 135 per cent increase on November 2021 when the international border opened in NSW, and 75 per cent on January and February this year.

The data also reveals the most popular international destinations for travel and the industries that are travelling the most.

Corporate Traveller Australia , Flight Centre Travel Group’s flagship travel management provider for SMEs, analysed its travel bookings from 1 January 2022 – two months on from Australia’s initial international border reopening – to 1 May 2022.

During this period, international flight bookings across Australia’s states increased significantly. South Australia saw the largest increase in travel bookings departing from the state, at 204 per cent from January to end-April 2022.

Bookings out of WA increased by 135 per cent, while Victoria saw a 116 per cent increase in bookings, NSW by 109 per cent and Queensland 105 per cent.

Tom Walley, Global Managing Director at Corporate Traveller, says: “Despite the fact that full capacity for international flights isn’t slated to return until next year, we’re seeing a significant demand for international travel from SMEs.

“As the world reopens, businesses and travellers are forging international relationships again to help increase their sales, expand into new markets, and source new partnerships. This will help drive the recovery of many industries in Australia and help improve our local economy.”

Popular international travel destinations for businesses

The Corporate Traveller data also uncovered five of the top 10 international destinations businesses are travelling to the most, with North America proving the most popular region for travel.

Bookings to Canada have seen a significant increase six months on from the initial international border reopening in November: flight bookings grew by 277 per cent from January to end-April 2022.

Travel bookings to the UK increased by 73 per cent, while the United States also proved popular, with bookings soaring by 71 per cent. The United Arab Emirates also ranked highly, experiencing a growth in bookings by 56 per cent.

Bookings to Singapore have been slightly slower to take off, increasing by 40 per cent in the same period. Mr Walley believes this is likely due to the travel restrictions Singapore had in place until 1 April, whereby the country then removed its testing and quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated travellers.

Tom says: “I anticipate international flight bookings will continue to soar month on month. As Singapore continues to relax its travel restrictions and requirements further, I expect SME travel bookings to catch up to other destinations.

“Travel to Europe is also likely to surge, as businesses look to combine their travel to the UK and Europe, potentially booking longer stays for their employees to make the most out of their travel and help drive the company’s sales and revenue.

“The introduction of direct flights to major cities such as New York and London in the next few years will also spur an increase in demand and advance flight bookings to these destinations.”

The industries travelling internationally the most

Mr Walley says that Corporate Traveller has also seen early green shoots of international travel in the last few months across several industries, namely essential industries that continued travelling domestically in the last two years.

International travel bookings between January to end-April 2022 shows the finance industry has been travelling the most, increasing its bookings by 224 per cent.

Next is the medical industry, with a 103 per cent increase and then the construction industry, with a 60 per cent increase. Businesses in the consulting industry are also resuming international travel strongly, with bookings increasing by 50 per cent.

The technology and mining industries have similarly experienced a healthy international travel revival, at 46 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.

“The finance industry saw the most impressive increase in travel, as a large part of the industry would have largely relied on international video meetings during border closures, and re-booted its travel programs this year,” Mr Walley said.

“We believe other industries such as medical and construction – while growing their travel healthily in the last few months – were already maintaining their essential travelling and, as such, saw smaller increases this year.

“Throughout the year we’re likely to see other industries rebound their travel, including manufacturing, IT, and education.

“Australia is also in the midst of a post-election transition to a new Government which is likely to see travel by Government employees increase significantly to continue to strengthen relationships with our international counterparts.”

A business leader’s guide to boosting productivity and wellness when travelling

A frequent business traveller shares his hacks for getting the most out of flying for work

Image of talent

Business travel is back. In a poll conducted by the Global Business Travel Association in January 2024, 83% of travel buyers said their global business travel bookings had increased significantly (31%), moderately (37%) or slightly (15%) between 2022 and 2023. Businesses are prioritising face time with clients and colleagues around the country, and towards the end of 2023, Virgin Australia reported that small and medium enterprise business travellers had returned to the airline at pre-covid levels.

Vikash Raniga, a group finance executive with the workforce solutions provider Adcorp, is one of many business leaders back in the skies. Adcorp has offices in all Australia’s major cities, and Raniga is a frequent traveller between the organisation’s finance teams in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Here, he shares his tips for productive business travel without burnout.

1. Keep an eye on your flight

Stay up to date with whether your flight is on time.

“If it’s an early morning flight I’ll check the night before,” Raniga says. “And even while I’m on the way to the airport, I’ll check, because if the flight’s not on time, I don’t have to rush.”

Raniga is a Virgin Australia Beyond member and uses time in the lounge to unwind or catch up with work, especially if he’s missing out on office time.

“I like to get to the airport with adequate time – you never know how long the queues are going to be, even in the priority lane, or at security, and if I end up with more time in the lounge, so be it.”

If they arrive early, Beyond members (and Virgin Frequent Flyer members with Gold status or above) may be eligible to take advantage of Virgin Australia’s Fly Ahead service and jump on an earlier flight to get a head start on their day.

2. Stay active

Walk when you can. “I walk whenever possible, even in the airport terminal in Brisbane,” Raniga says.

“If I get to the airport early and I don’t have anything pressing work-wise, once I’ve settled in the lounge, I just go for a walk in the terminal – probably only a thousand steps, but every bit helps. “And then once I get to the other end, rather than jumping on transport, I like to walk, especially after lunch and dinner.”

Setting up meetings outside the office can give you time to get up and move between commitments, and can be a good way to see your destination.

And adding a few days on either end of a business trip to relax or better explore a location can be a savvy way to unwind. Adcorp’s preferred travel management company, Corporate Traveller, found that from mid to late 2023 its customers were extending trips of one to three days into trips of up to six days, adding personal stays to their business trips in a trend known as “bleisure”.

3. Pack smart

Packing versatile smart-casual items will meet the demands of a dual-purpose trip. For ease, pack essentials in your hand luggage.

Raniga opts for low-maintenance, smart clothing that requires minimal ironing.

“In my cabin bag, I pack a spare set of socks and jocks and a shirt, at least,” he says. “I tend to wear my corporate pants when I’m travelling, and then I’ll fold up a pair of jeans to wear during the trip, because jeans won’t crease.”

Don’t overlook your footwear. Packing a comfortable pair of shoes that can take you anywhere is a must for busy trips – and also key to walking and exploring.

4. Prioritise sleep

Routines become more difficult to maintain when you’re travelling – especially for work, when the objective might be to catch up with as many colleagues and clients as possible face to face. This can mean a busy schedule of breakfasts, meetings outside typical office hours and work dinners.

“You hear of prime ministers or CEOs who can get by with three or four hours’ sleep,” Raniga says. “I can’t. I need my seven to eight hours daily. I can get by on less for one, maybe two nights, but that will be about my max. So I try to maintain my sleep.”

Consider your diary carefully and schedule breaks as mini events of their own. Opting for meetings of 25 minutes rather than half an hour, or 50 minutes instead of an hour, can buy you back some precious time.

It’s also a good idea to review your week as a whole.

“I organise my diary accordingly,” Raniga says. “If I’ve had a full day I try not to do too much in the evening, or I’ll try and start a little bit later the next morning just to give myself that balance, if possible.”

5. Hack your points

Consider rewards points whenever you make purchases, both at home and away. Raniga uses an American Express card as well as collecting Flybuys Points, which can be transferred to his Velocity Frequent Flyer account. He also recommends pooling your family’s points if that works for you.

“If you have a family and one person travels the most then Velocity Family Pooling comes in quite handy,” he says. “When anyone in the family travels, their Velocity Points can be pooled into the main member’s account and that helps to get the person to a higher Status level quickly.”

  • What's the Corporate Traveller difference?
  • Unparalleled service
  • People or technology? Choose both.

The right level of service maximises traveller time and business resources!

Travelling for business is an investment for your organisation, regardless of its size. It takes time, money and enormous effort to send your people around the world. Your corporate travel program must provide a seamless experience for travellers and travel managers, while also managing costs and delivering value to your business.

What are the key ingredients that go into developing successful business travel programs?

Accuracy: Having systems and tools in place to minimise errors and provide visibility into the overall program.

Responsiveness: Being able to quickly and effectively respond to traveller needs, both before and during their trip.

Personalisation: Tailoring the program to meet the specific needs and culture of the company, as well as the individual needs of each traveller.

Empathy: Understanding the challenges and concerns of travellers, and designing the program to minimise these.

Efficiency: Having clear and efficient processes in place for booking, managing, and tracking travel.

Optimisation: Continuously reviewing and improving the program to ensure that it is meeting the needs of the company and its travellers.

Structure: Having a well-defined and organised program with clear roles and responsibilities.

When all of these ingredients are present, business travel programs can run smoothly and effectively. This can lead to a number of benefits for the company, including reduced costs, increased employee satisfaction, and improved business performance.

The six Rs of effortless business travel

When you’re looking into possible business travel companies to partner with, there are six important factors to consider to ensure an effortless business travel program. Readiness, Reach, Responsiveness, Resourcefulness, Relevance, Relatability. Let’s explore.

Stress-free management for travel bookers - we can't stress this enough!

The power of personalised service!

Personalised service begins when there is a real human to human connection, and the people providing that service really care about the customer’s experience. They are committed to giving their all in every interaction and will all but move mountains to get the job done.

The modern world allows for plenty of online booking platforms and self-service options, but the value of personalised corporate travel management can’t be overlooked. Although travel technology has no doubt made travel arrangements more accessible, the human touch offered by a real-life person who knows who you are and what you like, is irreplaceable. When you have complex itineraries, last-minute changes, or need to ensure specific preferences and requirements are met, it’s especially important to have someone to call.

Benefits of personalised corporate travel management:

  • Human touch : Humans can provide a level of care and attention that algorithms and automated systems simply cannot replicate. They can listen and comprehend your needs, and offer personalised recommendations.
  • Tailored service : Dedicated travel experts take the time to understand the unique needs and preferences of each business and traveller, so that every aspect of the travel program is tailored to their specific requirements.
  • Full support : From the onboarding process, to booking, on-trip support, 24/7 emergency assistance, and regular reporting and analysis, personalised corporate travel management covers all the bases.

Personalised corporate travel management can help businesses save time and money, reduce stress for travellers, and improve the overall travel experience.

Our corporate travel platform savi in action

People or technology? Choose both.

We love our people, and we think they are the best in the business. But we also know that some people want to book and manage their travel online. That's why we created Your.CT, a self-service booking tool that is incredibly simple to use. And you should see the features within Savi for Travel Bookers!

Book a demo

  • With Your.CT, you can access hundreds of airlines, hotels, and car hire companies in just minutes. We even have options for remote locations and regional airlines.
  • Your.CT also keeps track of your traveller preferences and delivers options that you will love. It also flags anything outside of your company's travel policy. So you can be sure that you are always getting the best deals on travel, and that you are staying within your company's guidelines.
  • The Your.CT platform is a one-stop shop for all of your travel needs. You can search, compare, book, and track your trip in one place. You can also view up-to-date flight information, hotel and car hire details, and more.

So whether you prefer to book your travel with a human or with technology, we have you covered. With Your.CT, you can get the best of both worlds.

And don't miss out on investigating Corporate Traveller's Savi online booking tool features for travel bookers, including:

  • Savi Select: This feature allows travel bookers to create multiple options for a single trip via a shortlist, which the traveller can then accept or reject. This reduces back-and-forth communication between bookers and travellers, and helps to expedite the booking process.
  • Savi Credits: This feature ensures that travel bookers will never miss out on credits on hold. Savi releases air credits according to the traveller's frequency of travel, value of the credit, and expiry date.
  • Savi Insights: This feature provides travel bookers with real-time insights into their company's travel spend and activity. This data can be used to identify trends, make informed decisions, and negotiate better rates with suppliers.
  • Savi Connect: This feature allows travel bookers to integrate Savi with their company's existing travel management systems. This makes it easier for bookers to manage their company's travel program, and it helps to ensure that all travel data is in one place.

Overall, Corporate Traveller's Savi online booking tool is a powerful and versatile tool that can help travel bookers to save time and money, and to improve the overall travel experience for their travellers.

Great service is about action, not words.

Service is within the DNA of Corporate Traveller, as we strive for and test levels of excellence in delivering our services monthly.
