Katsunuma Wineries
The town of Katsunuma () in the Kofu basin is an important center of Japanese wine making, being the birthplace of the Japanese wine industry. Today the area remains the top producer of wines that are made using only Japanese grapes , and it is a popular tourist destination with a large concentration of wineries at which visitors can buy, taste and learn about many aspects of Japanese wine.
The Kofu basin has a long history of grape cultivation. The Koshu grape that is used to produce much of the region's wine is thought to have arrived in Japan over a thousand years ago. Wine making began in the 19th century , led by individuals who brought back skills learned in Europe. With high amounts of sunshine, the Kofu basin is well suited to vinicluture relative to others areas in Japan, and now there are over 70 wineries in Katsunuma and the surrounding region.
The region's wineries range widely in what they offer visitors. Many operate shops that sell the winery's products and offer wine tasting, while a few also conduct tours of the winery or offer workshops about the different aspects of wine. Below is a list of some of the area's more notable wineries and wine-related attractions:
Chateau Mercian
Budo no Oka
Getting there and around
Important note: Japan enforces a strict zero-tolerance drinking and driving policy.
The Katsunuma area is located on the eastern edge of the Kofu Plain, 20-25 minutes by train from Kofu Station. The area is served by two stations along the frequently operating JR Chuo Line: Enzan Station (330 yen one way from Kofu) and Katsunumabudokyo Station (420 yen from Kofu). Unfortunately, most wineries are not located within easy walking distance of the stations, and buses operate only very infrequently.
There are two loop bus lines that connect the two train stations with selected wineries and attractions in the area, but they operate only about once every 3 hours, making them close to impractical for getting around. Alternatively, most wineries are located within 15 minutes and 2000 yen by taxi from Katsunumabudokyo Station.
Rental cars are available from outlets around Kofu Station; however, a dedicated driver will be required because of Japan's strict drink and driving laws.

Koshu grape: The grape of Yamanashi
Japan wine is produced from three main grape varieties: Koshu indigenous (V.vinifera), Muscat Bailey A (a hybrid of V.vinifera and V.labrusca) and Delaware (a natural cross of V.labrusca and V.vinifera). The main white wines of Yamanashi are: Koshu, Delaware, Chardonnay, Niagara, Semillon. The main red wines are: Muscat Baily A, Kyoho, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Adriondac, Black Queen, Baily Alicante A, Kai Noire, Cabernet Franc.
Koshu: the unique wine of Yamanashi
Yamanashi prefecture is the oldest and largest producer of Koshu wine in Japan. The Katsunuma region of the Koshu valley is the heart of Koshu wine making and grape cultivation in Yamanashi. With 71 wineries and 82 factories, the vignerons of Yamanashi produce over 300 different brands of Japanese wine. Koshu wine is the largest variety produced, followed by Muscat Bailey A and Delaware. Several European varieties account for about 5% of total Japan wine production in Yamanashi.
The flavour of Koshu
The white wine of Koshu is said to have some similarity to Savignon Blanc. Koshu is light in color, with subtle aromas of citrus and white peach. Koshu wine is produced using three methods: The first one is a clear and sharp wine made with the Sur lie method, the second is fuller and more rounded wine aged in oak barrels, and the third type is a uniquely flavored type of wine. Koshu wine with its low alcohol and crisp acidity results in a taste that is delicate and subtle, and makes a nice pairing with Japanese cuisine that is inspired by fresh seafood, light meats and seasonal vegetables.

About Katsunuma Wine in Koshu area
Koshu was a province that was established in the Nara period and existed until the Meiji Restoration and was regarded as an important region for defense during the Edo Period.
Koshu province is now known as Yamanashi prefecture, and there remains a city named Koshu in Yamanashi. Now, Koshu is one of the most famous areas in Japan for wine. The area is famous for its regional specialty called Koshu wine, a type of wine made from a variety of grapes called Koshu grapes.
Katsunuma, an area in Koshu city located just 90 minutes from Tokyo, is wine country within the city. Katsunuma is located in a valley just North of Mount Fuji. You can enjoy panoramic views of the region and Mount Fuji. There are 31 wineries in the Katsunuma area of Koshu. Here 27% of all Japanese wine is produced, with the main variety being local Koshu white wine.
The best season to visit the Katsunuma area is in October when the vines are full of ripe grapes ready for picking and winemaking. You can enjoy a winery tour where you can sip on different varieties of local wine. Perhaps you can try your hand at some winemaking yourself as well. Grape-stomping is another fun activity that is sure to be a highlight of your trip. Most wineries also offer grape juice tasting for children, those who do not drink, or designated drivers. The area is very welcoming for all types of travelers and is a must-visit for any wine lover.
How to get to Katsunuma
The best way to reach Katsunuma is to take the Chuo Rapid Line. Take the Limited Express “Azusa” or “Kaiji” and get off at Katsunuma Budokyo station. You can board the train at Shinjuku, Tachikawa, or Hachioji station.
By car or by funk bass
There is a highway express bus departing from Shinjuku bus terminal that connects Tokyo and Katsunuma. There are multiple departures daily, but some of the busses skip Katsunuma. Be careful when reserving a seat to ensure your bus stops at Katsunuma.
If you want to go by car, you can use the Chuo Expressway, which is a toll highway running from through Tokyo and Yamanashi. Please note that most visitors will need to possess an international driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Japan.
Alternatively, you can join a tour with knowledgable local guides. Tokyo Travel Assist offers a winery tour. They will use their expertise and take you to some of the best wineries in Katsunuma. About Japanese whiskey
Japan is known around the world for its sake, or traditional Japanese rice wine. In shops around the world, you can try different varieties of Japanese sake. However, you may be surprised to hear that Japan is also becoming a hotspot for whiskey production as well. Japanese whiskey has been getting popular in recent years and consequently getting more expensive. What’s so unique about Japanese whiskey is that it utilizes pure water from the peak of Mount Fuji, giving it a unique and delicious taste.
Three recommended distilleries
Since most people are not aware of Japan’s growing whiskey market, most people also do not know where to find authentic Japanese whiskey distilleries. Here are three whiskey distilleries we recommend:
Suntory’s Hakushu distillery
Suntory’s Hakushu Distillery is a whiskey distillery located in Hokuto, Yamanashi used for the production of Suntory’s famous Hakushu whiskey. This distillery offers two ways to enjoy its facilities.
The first is to look around at your own pace without the help of a guide by exploring the history of whiskey in the Suntory Museum of Whiskey. Note that you cannot gain access to the production process if you choose to browse by yourself.
The second way is to join the Hakushu Distillery Tour where you can get exclusive access to the production area. You can watch malt whiskey production and enjoy the aroma of 10, 20, and even 30-year old aging whiskey in the warehouse.
Besides the tour, you can enjoy limited-edition whiskeys on site. The staff can offer snack pairings with different kinds of whiskey. After trying different varieties, you are welcome to buy a bottle for yourself.
At the Hakushu Distillery, there is also a forest restaurant called “White Terrace”. The restaurant offers mouthwatering dishes made with local ingredients. Furthermore, all of the dishes go well with whiskey! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the distillery in the countryside while sipping on some quality Japanese whiskey.
Tokyo Travel Assist offers a Suntory Hakushu Distillery and Tasting Tour. One of Tokyo Travel Assist’s knowledgable local guides will take you on a trip to Suntory’s Hakushu Distillery. Not only will you be accompanied by a friendly local during your visit, but also you will be escorted to and from your accommodation, so there is no concern about getting lost in the countryside. Be sure to check out the Suntory Distillery and Tasting tour page that gives you all of the details of the tour.

Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery is in the Western part of Japan near Osaka and Kyoto. Similar to the Hakushu Distillery, the Yamazaki Distillery offers two ways to enjoy its facilities.
The first is to look around at your own pace without the help of a guide by exploring the history of whiskey in the Yamazaki Museum of Whiskey. Note that you cannot gain access to the production process if you choose to browse by yourself.
The second way is to join the Yamazaki Distillery Tour where you can get exclusive access to the production area. You can see the various steps of whiskey production here. The warehouse is also open to tour participants, where a guide will explain the process of whiskey maturation.

Kirin’s Fuji Gotemba distillery
Kirin’s Fuji Gotemba Distillery is located Gotemba, a city located right beside Mount Fuji. This Distillery offers three kinds of free distillery tours. One is 30 minutes long, one is 70 minutes long, and one is 90 minutes long. The shortest tour is for casual visitors who are interested in learning the basic history and facts of whiskey through a movie. The tour includes one glass of whiskey for tasting.
The longer tours are for those who are more interested in the details of whiskey production. The 70-minute long tour is the most popular as it allows visitors to view the production process up close. Participants also get to try two different kinds of whiskey on this tour! The 90-minute long tour offers an exclusive opportunity for participants to walk through the maturation warehouse. The 90-minute long tour also offers a chance to sample two different whiskeys on the tour.

Katsunuma: Japan's Wine Country
Wine lovers can bask in 31 wineries in Yamanashi
The quaint mountain town of Katsunuma is packed with wineries, hot springs and amazing views in the heart of Japan's wine country.
I took weekend trips here in the summer and again this fall. The fall colors, grapevine-covered country side and bright blue sky made it two days of picturesque tranquility.
Actually, Katsunuma merged into what is now called Koshu . The Koshu area is known for its wine production as well as “viniculture,” or science, production and study of grapes. Katsunuma is still known for its Wine and Grape Festival. With 24 local wineries on site, the fest that offers free wine saw its 62nd year earlier this month. I didn't get a chance to go, but it's on my list for next year!
Katsunuma produces 27 percent of Japan’s wine. Along with grapes, the region that’s north of Mt. Fuji is also a producer of peaches and plums. There are 31 wineries in Katsunuma, according to an article in Japan Montly Web Magazine.
You can pick grapes from September through October, but I only got a chance to taste the sweet fruits of the labor while I was there, not pick any of them. I saw perfect deep-purple grapes delicately dangling in vineyards as I strolled along the narrow streets of Katsunuma. I also, for the first time, got to sink my teeth into muscat grapes. The plump green grapes are what Moscato wine is made from, and they had a sweetly unique taste I couldn’t get enough of.
There are many small bed-and-breakfast accommodations to stay in after sightseeing. Notably and affordably, there is a hostel called, Katsunuma Budokyo Youth Hostel, about a 20-minute walk from the station.
A few notable wineries are Manns Wines , Haramo Wine and Chateau Mercian. Many types of grapes are grown, thus making for a notable variety of wines to try.
For the most relaxing view of the area, go to the hot spring bath “Tenku no Yu,” where you can take an open-air bath while overlooking the city and the Japanese Southern Alps .
Getting there
About a 1-hour-and-30-minute trip by JR Chuo Line Limited express “Azusa” or “Kaiji” from Shinjuku Station to Katsunuma-budokyo Station.

Katsunuma: Japan’s Wine Country
Katsunuma is a short trip from Tokyo that is sure to give you an experience that you never thought possible in Japan. Wine country here is standing strong and waiting for your visit.
By Lisa Hong Jun 27, 2014 4 min read 2
I was surprised to learn that quite a few areas in Japan made wine (ie. Nagano, Hokkaido, Niigata, and Katsunuma) and became curious to find out about Japan produced wines. Was it good? Was it popular? How was it compared to European wines?
I have previously written about the care put into Japanese sake and craft beer , but wine is much more high-maintenance, which is why I was intrigued that a country so humid would attempt such a task.
Vines need extreme cold, hot, and dryness to produce grapes suitable for wine production. But apparently, wine-making in Japan has been occurring since the Meiji Period, when Japan opened its doors to the Western world.
A wine unique to Japan is made from the Koshu grape. Now, here’s where the high-maintenance comes into play. One can’t just crush and ferment this grape. Because Japan is so humid, wine-makers have to extract the sugar from the Koshu, make sure all of the percentages are just right, and then go through the fermenting process. What is produced from this arduous procedure? A white wine that perfectly compliments Japanese food!
Japanese producers also make red wines and other whites. To compete in the industry, though, the wines need to have some familiar Western qualities, but its differences should be appreciated. To try it for yourself, I don’t suggest that you purchase a bottle blindly. I am a firm believer in tasting before you buy.
Katsunuma, wine country in Yamanashi, is only an hour and a half from Tokyo, but it feels like a world away, with its slow-paced vibe and the fact that English is not readily spoken, Japanese will be needed for the best experience. When you arrive at the Katsunuma-budokyo station, the main way to get around is by taxi (another option is to rent a car from Tokyo and drive to this area yourself).
Katsunuma offers a range of wines that would fit any of your favorite foods. Most tastings are complimentary, but bottle purchases are recommended. The best way to try and purchase wine is by imagining what food you would want to pair with it.
Wineries are sprinkled across this region, but I will highlight my favorites below.
I adore small-production, family-owned wineries, and I highly recommend a visit to Haramo Winery . Their wines are the best that I have tasted in Japan. Approachable, smooth, nice finish. Reminiscent of French styles without being a copy-cat. I bought a couple bottles of dry reds that went really well with a variety of bakery selections. While you are at Haramo, enjoy the cafe lunch specials while overlooking the vineyards.
Yamanashi Wine is also worth visiting, especially for the cellar tour, where you can surround yourself with aromatic barrels and beautifully-dusty aged bottles. In the tasting room, try the white and sweet wines – they are brilliant! Perfect for this upcoming summer.
Finally, there is Budo No Oka , which is situated on top of a lovely hill. It is a huge complex which includes hotel, onsen, vineyard, restaurants, gift shop, and tasting cave. Staying here overnight is the best way to fully enjoy the setting; because you are located on a hill, the views are breath-taking. If you can’t stay, at least try the wine-tasting. You are given a French-style tastevin, and then you enter a cave with open bottles, categorized by whites and reds, sweet to dry. This is a self-service experience (1,100 yen for unlimited tastes), so pace yourself! Your favorite bottles can be purchased in the gift shop.
Katsunuma is a day or overnight trip from Tokyo that is sure to give you an experience that you never thought possible in Japan. Wine country here is standing strong and waiting for your visit.

We love the idea of staying here…but is hope lost if we don’t speak a lick of Japanese? Any tips?
I’m going to Tokyo very soon, would LOVE to visit one of these places! I love wine and especially winery tours. My Japanese is still pretty poor, but I might attempt it. Thanks for this, I was wondering about wine production in Japan. 🙂

Japan’s Hidden Wine Region Offers Hot Springs, Hiking, and Historic Temples
Japan’s under-the-radar wine scene turns out so much more than sake. get off the main tourist circuit and discover a distinctly japanese take on all things wine in the koshu valley, an hour west of tokyo..
- Copy Link copied
The Japanese wineries of the Koshu Valley, in the Yamanashi Prefecture, invite visitors for wine tastings and exploration.
Courtesy of Koshu Valley
Nestled between the Japanese Alps to the north and Mount Fuji to the south, Japan ’s Koshu Valley is the setting for over 70 sweeping vineyards. Here, in the Yamanashi Prefecture, grape clusters don tiny hats (called kasa ) that protect them from the rain (after a few generous tastings, you might expect them to tip them to you and say konnichiwa ). Only over an hour from Tokyo , the fertile valley beckons with fruit farms and vineyards, where centuries of winemaking traditions endure, bolstered by more modern interpretations of wine country hospitality. Western and native grapes are widely cultivated, including the popular native koshu, which turns out a soft and fruity white wine with citrus and peach notes, as well as muscat bailey a, which typically lends itself to a light and fruity red but may also be blended with Western varietals like cabernet sauvignon and merlot to make a heftier, more complex wine.
Beyond the vines, Japan’s volcanic geology ensures that the Koshu Valley, like much of the nation, is home to plenty of natural onsen , or hot springs. If winetastings and hot springs sound like the perfect pairing, book into a charming lodge (like a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn) in one of the wine region’s valleys or surrounding mountain towns and stay a while.
Here, we focus on five of the Koshu Valley’s very best towns. Keep in mind, you’ll be well off-the-beaten tourist track in these parts: A translator may come in handy; Mount Fuji Yamanashi Guide-Interpreter Association (FYGIA) has many English-speaking guides in the region.
The koshu grape harvest in Katsunuma, where you can even taste wine in an ancient temple.
It’s said that Japan’s first grapes were planted in small-town Katsunuma some 1,000 years ago, and it’s likewise where the nation’s winemaking tradition kicked off about 140 years ago. During the approach to Katsunuma from Tokyo by train or car (a 90-minute ride), the buildings melt away, replaced by vineyards and fruit trees, all against the backdrop of mountains. The town, with attractions like the 8th-century Daizenji Temple , aka “The Grape Temple” (the only temple in Japan to offer winetastings, it’s said to be the birthplace of the koshu variety—and a great spot to enjoy a glass), is situated within walking distance of over a dozen wineries. Try Katsunuma Winery , where you can pop into the tasting room for a pour or pair its wines with a meal at the winery’s on-site French restaurant, Le Vent (the chicken asparagus salad pairs wonderfully with its Aurga Branca Clareza, a crisp white made from the koshu grape). Or sample many of the area’s producers in one convenient spot at Budo-no-Oka (Grape Hill), a communal wine cellar established by several local wineries, which also touts a hotel with onsen and several restaurants.
Where to Stay: The casual, six-room Suzuki-en B&B unfolds across several converted, 19th-century wooden buildings set around a small courtyard and surrounded by vineyards.
In Kamijo Village, enjoy a rustic stay in a traditional home at the Moshi Moshi House.
Kamijo Village
Set in the northern part of the valley, picturesque and petite Kamijo Village contains a variety of traditional, early 20th-century buildings (called koshu minka, they were once employed for silkworm cultivation) and small shrines, hidden away in its narrow streets and farm-connecting pathways. (For scale, a walk from the Fukuzoin Temple—its main landmark—around the entirety of the village only takes about an hour.) Kamijo Village is located less than a 15-minute drive from a nexus of wineries, like winery/brewery hybrid Okunota Winery & Okuno Sake Brewery or Kai Winery , which turns out a wide range of Japanese and Western varietals in a 200-year-old building. When you’re all tasted out, consider an excursion into the mountains: Within a 30-minute drive is the forested Mount Kurokawa, where you can hike past an old gold mine (where Japanese coins were once sourced in the 16th century), and Mount Daibosatsu. Whether you hike (it’s six hours there and back) or drive, Mount Daibosatsu’s summit is considered one of the best vantage points over Mount Fuji.
Where to Stay: If you’re feeling adventurous, rent one of Kamijo Village’s traditional thatched houses with a stay at the Moshi Moshi House, where you can opt in for a locals-led cooking class based on houtou noodles. Or try the minimalist, four-room Zen and Bed , situated next to Erinji Temple, where daily meditation and vegetarian meals are part of the experience.
Stuck-in-time Ashiwaga is home to the Fujiwara House, a mid-18th-century farmhouse turned community center.
Technically part of the greater city of Fuefuki, the Ashigawa quarter is essentially a collection of small farming villages that snake along the Mitake Shōsen Gorge. Although it feels wonderfully remote, the area is only 30 minutes from Fuefuki’s main winery hub, a neighborhood that contains popular spots like Grace Winery , with its buzzing tasting room, and the eponymous Fuefuki Winery where you can have a go at making your own wine (from grape stomping to label making). Back in Ashigawa, don’t miss a visit to the Fujiwara House , a mid-18th-century thatched farmhouse-cum-community center that’s staffed by local farmers—many of whom are in their 80s and 90s—who serve visitors free green tea, seasonal fruits, and sweets and love to speak about the area. Ashigawa is also popular with hikers, thanks to the stunning views of Mount Fuji from the bluffs of Mount Kurodake. The hiking route is called the Shindo Pass (or Shindotoge), and during the summer it’s possible to see 2 million wild lily of the valley, or suzuran , en route.
Where to Stay: There’s only one real lodging option in Ashigawa (apart from hiking lodges): rent one of two private houses at the folksy Loof Inn Ashigawa ; it dates to 1907 and features an open-hearth communal dinner, with more than 100 local and imported wines to choose from.
Isawa Onsen
At the southern end of the Koshu Valley, in the greater Fuefuki region, the small town of Isawa Onsen maintains an attractive collection of ryokan and hot spring hotels and spas (like the Kaisen Healing Resort Spa ), making it a great base for wine country exploration. But you needn’t leave the town for some great tasting opportunities: Within a 10-minute walk of the Isawa Onsen train station (a two-hour rail trip from Tokyo), Mars Yamanashi Winery offers tours and private tastings, while Monde Winery and Vineyards pairs tastings with a culinary boutique full of wine-centric treats (like raisins covered with wine-flavored yogurt). Notable for art buffs, the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art (20 minutes by car from Isawa Onsen) combines an outdoor sculpture park with a gallery featuring modern and contemporary artists from Japan and beyond.
Where to Stay: While there are many ryokan to choose from, the 118-room Hanayagi No Sho Keizan is one example that really shines, for its open-air stone onsen, spa, naturally heated indoor pool, and nightly Japanese drum show.
Just 30 minutes from wine country, the town of Lake Kawaguchiko makes for an atmospheric base as one of the Fuji Five Lakes, with Mount Fuji views aplenty.

Lake Kawaguchiko
A little outside of wine country but close enough to enjoy the wineries of the Koshu Valley (situated about 30 minutes to the south), Lake Kawaguchiko is an enchanting lakefront town that sits upon one of the Fuji Five Lakes, with Mount Fuji affording a stunning backdrop. You can venture into the valley for tastings at spots like Alps Winery , for its heftier, Western-style wines, or Win Winery , a small-scale family operation. Or stay in town to sample local varietals at establishments like wine museum/bar Memoire Kawaguchiko Wine Hall or Cafe Buddy’s , a wine bar and shop that serves European cuisine. Lake Kawaguchiko is also home to the Kawaguchiko Music Forest that’s as magical as it sounds—the indoor/outdoor theme park and museum is devoted to automatic musical instruments, such as music boxes and mechanical organs. For panoramic views and fresh mountain air, take the Tenjo Yama Park Ropeway cable car that ascends more than 1,300 feet from the lakeshore to Mount Tenjo (you can then catch the cable car back down or opt to descend the mountain trail on foot).
Where to Stay: Book a stay at the 27-room Mizno Hotel , touting amenities like an open-air rooftop onsen and bar, library lounge, loaner bikes, and swan-shaped paddleboats to take out onto Lake Kawaguchiko—all of which have glorious Mount Fuji in full view.

The Katsunuma area in the city of Koshu is famous for its vineyards and has a long history of fruit-growing. According to one local legend, the first grapes were planted here after the Buddhist priest Gyoki founded Daizenji Temple in 718. He had a vision of Yakushi, the Buddha of medicine and healing, holding a bunch of grapes and carved a statue of the deity. Later, Gyoki taught locals how to grow a variety that came to be known as Koshu grapes, which are still popular here today. By the 1800s, the area had become the home of Japanese viticulture, including winemaking. At Miyakoen and the Château Mercian Wine Museum, visitors can learn about early winemaking in Yamanashi. Katsunuma remains the heart of Yamanashi’s wine region and is particularly famous for its white wines. Sprawling vineyards lined with grape trellises run along both sides of the valley in front of Katsunuma-Budokyo Station. In August and September, the fields are filled with fresh grapes and many vineyards in the area offer a grape-picking experience. Nearly 40 wineries are based in the area and many can be toured year-round. The annual Katsunuma Grape Festival is held on the first Saturday of October, when visitors can sample local wines made from Koshu and Muscat Bailey A grapes. The gateway to wine country, Katsunuma-Budokyo Station’s distinctive two-floor stepped design includes multiple viewing spots over the valley below. Beside the station is a quiet path with views down the slopes that leads to an old switchback for the train line. The path is lined with cherry trees and is beautiful in spring. The station also includes a tourist information center and a bicycle rental stand.

Welcome to Japan's
Hidden wine country.
An hour and a half outside Tokyo lies the wine world's best-kept secret: the Koshu Valley. Framed by Mt. Fuji and the Japanese Alps, the area enjoys dramatic vistas and long hours of sunshine, with 70 wineries nestled in a valley blanketed with grapes. The flagship wine is an elegant, crisp white wine from the eponymous Koshu grape.
There is something quintessentially Japanese about a fine Koshu. The word zen keeps coming to mind.
Wine Country
Grapes arrived in Japan from Europe a thousand years ago along the Silk Road. Mystery surrounds the origins of formal viticulture but one thing is undisputed - it all began in Katsunuma in the heart of the Koshu Valley.
Winemaking in Japan began in the late 19th Century to satisfy a new-found interest in Western tastes. Many of the leading Koshu winemakers are descended from these pioneers, splitting their passions between the indigenous Koshu grape and more recently planted European and American varieties.
Good wine begets good food, and healthy Japanese, French and fusion cuisine can be found in and around the wineries, perfectly placed between stops on a walking tour in the valley or perched in the surrounding hills.
See the sun go down over the snow-capped Japanese Alps and rise to reveal Mt. Fuji above the mist - Katsunuma in the Koshu Valley was once a stop for Edo period feudal lords on their way to and from Tokyo on the Koshu Kaido.
Getting there
Express trains run several times a day from Shinjuku in Tokyo direct to Katsunumabudokyo or Enzan in the Koshu Valley, allowing for an easy day trip from the capital. Travel times are comparable by car, taking an hour and a half from central Tokyo in clear traffic.

Aruga Branca Clareza, Arugano Bosque, Aruga Branca Brilhante—that's not Japanglish, but some of the wines produced by Katsunuma Winery, and a peek into owner Yuji Aruga's clever and playful aesthetics. Aruga decided to give his wines these faux-Portuguese monikers after noticing that his last name sounded Portuguese, overlaid with the theory that the Portuguese first brought European wine to Japan.
Katsunuma Winery dates back to 1937 and have dedicated themselves to Koshu wines; in fact, every one of their white wines are made with Koshu grapes. They could be called the Koshu Whisperer: they really know how to work with Koshu grapes. Their single-minded passion for Koshu wines have attracted national and international acclaim and market, and today, their Koshu wines shine a beacon light on the future of Japanese Koshu wines. In fact, they are arguably the reason Koshu wines even have a global market today—in the 2000's, their Aruga Branca Pipa won multiple medals in the French competition Vinalies Internationales hosted by the French Brewer's Association, resulting in a collaboration with Bernard Magrez of Château Pape Clément, one of the oldest, most eminent wine estates in Bordeaux. This led to the creation of Magrez Aruga Koshu Isehara, the first Japanese wine ever to be exported to the EU.
The winery was already at the top of their game: their Brilhante was served at the G7 Ise-Shima Summit, they've been name-dropped in pop culture (in the manga Drops of God, a series about the son of a wine critic who must identify 12 wines in order to claim an inheritance), all thanks to the acumen and dynamism of President Aruga. With the return of his son Hirotaka from a wine-making stint at Simon Bize et Fils in Beaune, things are brewing in even more interesting ways at Katsunuma Winery. With a mind towards wine-making that brings out the terroir of Yamanashi, they're experimenting with natural yeasts, cutting out of the chaptalization (adding of sugar during fermentation), and making skin-contact wine made in qvevri, or Georgian clay concrete egg fermenters. (More interesting, useful, and helpful to this world than Gwyneth Paltrow's jade eggs, believe me.)

Yamanashi Prefecture
Yamanashi Prefecture is located in the middle of Honshu, the mainland of Japan, about a two-hour train ride west from Tokyo. With Mt. Fuji and the five lakes surrounding it, great hiking, and beautiful hot springs, it is a popular destination. Katsunuma Winery is located in Katsunuma, in the heart of Yamanashi Prefecture. The soil and climate of Katsunuma was ill-suited for growing rice, but ideal for grapes, and Katsunuma became a major Koshu grape-producing region, as well as the birthplace of Japanese wine.
Hirotaka Aruga
Hirotaka Aruga joined Katsunuma Winery, his family's business, in 2007. After going abroad for three years to France to apprentice at Domaine Simon Bize et Fils in Beaune, he returned to the winery in 2012 as a wine maker.

Our Mission
Wine is the expression of the relationship between humans and nature. The winery takes pride in its small size and continues, as before, to create wines that show the uniqueness of Katsunuma.
The strength of Katsunuma rest on the magnetism of President Aruga, but the next generation as well: his three sons are separately in charge of the wine making, administration, and harvesting, and have come up with fresh, new ideas that showcase Koshu grapes. One of those ideas is to highlight the differences in the Koshus they harvest from within the same Koshu Valley, caused by the contrast in soils.
Two thirds of their wines are Koshu wines, out of which, their entire white wine selection is made only from Koshu grapes. They have three different fields within the same valley, and all three yield distinctly unique Koshu grapes.
The Iwai vineyard is 400 meters above sea level and has yellowish volcanic ash soil from Mount Fuji that is low in nutrients. It produces Koshus that have a fruit aroma that is more peachy than citrusy. Their pleasant bitterness matches incredibly well with the umami of Japanese food.
The Yamato vineyard is 500 meters above sea level and has sandy soil with good drainage that can take rain. The temperature difference between night and day is ideal, has good ventilation and low humidity. It produces grapes that have a pure, clean fruitiness and rich acidity. It also gives a good amount of minerality, and has a distinct flavor that is unique. The Kaneyama vineyard is 350 meters above sea level, and has clay soil layered with sand. It yields thick-skinned grapes that ferment slowly. Its wines have a long finish, and goes well with dashi in Japanese foods as well as sushi.
