Wine & Lecture: Henry G. Fenton in Coronado

The Coronado Historical Association invites you to join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the pioneering legacy of Henry G. Fenton, told by local historian Dr. Sandra Bonura. Sandee is the award-winning author of multiple published works. Between writing two of her best-known works on the Del and Spreckels family, a new fascinating story emerged. She began penning the biography of Fenton and came away amazed that it is virtually impossible to go anywhere in Coronado without seeing something connected to this forgotten pioneer. Fenton was a formidable visionary, and his industrial and agricultural enterprises ultimately transformed San Diego and Coronado. Despite the fact that he created much of San Diego’s early-twentieth-century infrastructure, his name is unknown to many contemporary San Diegans.

The US Navy's new floating base for Marines and Navy SEALs is named for a Vietnam war hero

  • USS John L. Canley joined the active fleet as the US Navy's newest warship, a floating sea base.
  • The Canley is the Navy's sixth expeditionary mobile base (ESB).
  • The first of its name, the warship honors the Vietnam war hero, the late Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley.

Insider Today

The US Navy commissioned a new warship earlier this month, a massive floating sea base named after a Vietnam war hero.

The first of its name

coronado navy ship tour

Born in Caledonia, Arkansas, in December 1937, John Canley went on to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1953.

In his nearly 30 years in service, Canley was deployed on three combat tours to the Vietnam War, serving as a rifle platoon leader, company gunnery sergeant, and company first sergeant before retiring as a sergeant major in 1981.

In 2018, Canley was awarded the nation's highest military honor for his actions during the Battle of Hue City in Vietnam in 1968, when he carried more than 20 wounded Marines to safety while under enemy fire. He also took command for three days of Alpha Company, 1st battalion, 1st Marines after his company commander was wounded.

He became the first Black Marine to receive a Medal of Honor while still living.

Honoring the ship's namesake

coronado navy ship tour

Canley died on May 11, 2022, in Bend, Oregon, of complications related to prostate cancer. He was 84.

He was honored by the ship's crewmembers in a memorial service and buried with full military honors at the Arlington National Cemetary.

"The actions in the face of danger Sgt. Maj. Canley took are incredible and remarkable," Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Troy Black said in 2022. "Sgt. Maj. Canley was a leader and a warfighter who undoubtedly contributed to the battles won in Vietnam."

"His first priority was and has always been his Marines — a true example of Semper Fidelis," Black added. "I'm saddened by the loss of such a great Marine, yet I'm grateful for the legacy he established for generations of warriors."

Joining the active fleet

USS John L. Canley joined the active fleet in a commissioning ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California, on February 17.

The third largest flight deck of the US Navy

coronado navy ship tour

Canley's legacy lives on in the Navy's newest expeditionary sea base, the first of its name and the sixth ESB to join the Navy's active fleet.

The Lewis B. Puller-class warship acts as a highly flexible mobile staging area to support military operations at sea, including the Marine Corps, special operations forces like the Navy SEALs, and other embarked units. It can also serve as a mothership for unmanned aerial systems.

It is designed to include aviation facilities, equipment staging support, and command-and-control assets.

With a length of 785 feet, it also has the Navy's third-largest flight deck. The diesel-electric vessel has four large rotary-wing landing spots that can support nearly every helicopter within the joint forces: MH-53E Sea Dragons , MV-22 Ospreys , CH-47 Chinooks , CH-46 Sea Knight , AH-1 Cobras , and AH-64 Apaches .

Fully loaded, the Canley has a displacement of 90,000 tons and can travel at 15 knots with a range of 9,500 nautical miles.

Supporting a variety of operations

coronado navy ship tour

General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company built the mobile sea platform. David Carver, President of General Dynamics NASSCO, noted the "remarkable capabilities" of the Canley.

"Canley has substantial residual space, weight, and power to accommodate a wide range of current and future, manned and unmanned, surface, aerial, and undersea systems across multiple warfighting functions," Carver said. "This is a massive, capable, flexible warship that gives fleet commanders decision space they need throughout their operating theaters."

The ship can accommodate MK-105 mine sleds, rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) used by SEALs and Marines, and twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The ship can also carry high-speed interceptor patrol boats and has weapon mounts and stowage space for weapons and ammunition.

A look inside the Canley

coronado navy ship tour

Xavier Vavasseur, chief editor of Naval News, toured the Canley with Capt. Thomas Mays, the commanding officer of the ESB.

They walked through the ship's parking-garage-like structure, where the crew could store boats and vehicles.

"One of our primary mission sets is US Marine Corps aviation mine-sweeping," Mays told Naval News. "The MH-53 can drop sleds in the water, and then sweep a minefield free to enable an amphibious assault if needed."

Flying low over the water, the powerful MH-53 tows the sled through the minefield to trigger any lurking mines so ships can later pass through.

Operating with the Navy's Forward Deployed Naval Force

coronado navy ship tour

Mays said the ship's crew will undergo a few more months of certification and training before likely joining the USS Miguel Keith (ESB 5) in the Seventh Fleet operating area in the Western Pacific.

Christened by Canley's daughter

coronado navy ship tour

A few weeks after his death, Canley's daughter and the ship's sponsor, Patricia Sargent, christened the ship in a time-honored tradition, breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the ship's bow in a ceremony in June 2022.

She delivered an address during the ship's commissioning in February 2023, highlighting her father's heroism and other Marines in the Vietnam War.

"To be able to give the order to bring this ship to life, I need to give you some information in regards to my father," Sargent said. "My father understood that greatness is not achieved by the individual; it is achieved by the courageous acts of the many. The Marines of Alpha Company 1/1 are an example of that in what they achieved in the Battle of Hue City."

"This ship will achieve greatness, but it will only do that by the courageous actions of the many," Sargent continued. "It is in honor of my father, my family, members of the 1/1, and the great people of the United States that I give the command: officers and crew of the USS John L. Canley, man our ship and bring her to life!"

'A beautiful ship named after a very brave man'

coronado navy ship tour

Paul Garcia recalled his time serving alongside Canley in 1968, saying he "earned the respect of every member of our unit because of his selflessness during combat."

"During major battles, he'd go out into the open and save Marines after they were shot," Garcia told the Orange County Register. "I just feel honored I served with him."

Garcia was part of a private tour of the warship following its commission, describing it as a "beautiful ship named after a very brave man."

"It will afford the Marine Corps the ability to be prepared in any location to attack in an amphibious landing," he said.

'An inspiration to all who follow in her wake'

coronado navy ship tour

"It is my firm belief that USS John L. Canley will serve as an inspiration to all who follow in her wake," US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said during the commissioning ceremony earlier this month.

"It is my sincere hope that for those who come aboard this ship — those in the United States Navy, the Marine Corps, Military Sealift Command — when they cross that bow, they're also challenged to live up to the unwavering devotion to duty that this ship's namesake."

USS Coronado Commissioned at NAS North Island

The littoral combat ship has been underway since january, and is now ready to hit the waterfront, by monica garske • published april 5, 2014 • updated on april 5, 2014 at 7:44 pm.

The U.S. Navy’s newest littoral combat ship, USS Coronado, was commissioned in San Diego Saturday morning in a ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island.

Accompanied by the ship’s core crew of 40 officers and enlisted personnel, Cmdr. Shawn Johnston looked on proudly at USS Coronado as Adm. Mark Ferguson, Vice Chief of Naval Operations, delivered the principal address at the ceremony. In a time-honored Navy tradition, a first order was later given to “man our ship and bring her to life!”

For USS Coronado sailor BM2 Ricardo Tovar, Saturday’s commissioning was extra special, and a highlight of his Navy career.

“We’ve been working long hours but it’s all led up to this great day. It’s always good as a crew to see the ship come to life. Before it was just bare metal and now we’re actually a functioning ship on the waterfront,” Tovar told NBC 7.

As a boatswain’s mate, Tovar said he and fellow crewmembers have been primarily responsible for much of the manual labor aboard the vessel, including operating a lot of the machinery on board.

Now, he’s looking forward to seeing what the ship can do.

“I’m ready to get back to work, hit the waterfront. I’m excited for that,” he said.

The San Diego native said he’s also thrilled to be working back in his hometown, near his family, after being deployed overseas for many years.

USS Coronado is homeported in San Diego.

The highly-anticipated warship, underway since late January, arrived last month in San Diego after making stops in Florida, Guantanamo Bay, Colombia, Panama and Mexico.

The 2,790-ton ship was built by Austal USA Shipbuilding in Mobile, Ala., and is the fourth littoral combat ship, or LCS, in the Navy. Littoral combat ships are designed to be fast, maneuverable and flexible with minimal crew, hence USS Coronado’s 40-person crew.

This means sailors do much more than his or her primary job.

Tovar told NBC 7 the workflow on the ship is “nonstop” but is also very rewarding.

According to the Navy, USS Coronado is 417 feet in length. It was a waterline beam of 100 feet, and a navigational draft of 15 feet. The ship uses two gas turbine and two diesel engines to power four steerable water jets to speeds in excess of 40 knots. It’s capable of operating independently or with an associated strike group.

While the ship’s commissioning ceremony was exciting for the crew, it was also a memorable, happy moment for sailors’ loved ones.

“I’m very proud of my son. I’m so happy to be here,” said Trina Gatestraylor, mother of a USS Coronado crewmember.

Navy spouse Deanna Frelis said seeing the ship come to life was a very special moment for her family.

“It’s absolutely amazing. I’m very proud [of my sailor],” she said.

The USS Coronado is the third Navy ship to be named after the Crown City.

The USS Coronado (LCS 4), one of the U.S. Navy’s newest warships, made a good will port visit to Jakarta from September 14-16. During the visit to Jakarta the crew hosted a reception attended by the Ambassador, Indonesian Minister for Maritime Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti and Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan, ambassadors from multiple countries, and senior officers from the Indonesian Navy. The Public Affairs Section also facilitated a tour of the warship for major Indonesian media outlets that reported on the ship’s cutting-edge technical capabilities and an interview with the ship’s commanding officer.  Following the two-day visit, the Coronado left port and conducted a Passing Exercise (PASSEX) with ships from the Indonesian Navy.  The visit of the USS Coronado marks over two years since a U.S. Navy ship called in Jakarta, the last being the USS Sampson (DDG 102) in March 2015.

LCS Coronado decommissioned after less than 9 years of active service

coronado navy ship tour

The littoral combat ship Coronado was decommissioned in San Diego Wednesday, less than nine years after the pricey ship entered active service.

Before receiving its shadow box Wednesday, the Independence-class ship spent its career conducting operations before becoming a test and training ship.

It was commissioned in 2014 and saw its first deployment in 2016, cut short after it suffered an engineering casualty and had to return to Hawaii.

The following year, Coronado’s embarked crew was marooned in Singapore after revised LCS training standards left the Navy without a qualified crew to rotate aboard.

“Today we recognize the great contribution Coronado and its crew made in developing the operational concepts foundational to the current configuration and deployment of littoral combat ships,” Rear Adm. Wayne Baze, the ceremony’s guest speaker and commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3 said, according to a Navy release announcing the decommissioning.

coronado navy ship tour

The littoral combat ship’s latest problem: Class-wide structural defects leading to hull cracks

The troubling revelations about the independence-class littoral combat ships come as the navy continues to grapple with a class-wide transmission issue in the freedom-class variants..

“Thanks to Coronado, the future of LCS looks bright.”

Coronado’s final commanding officer, Cmdr. Spike Lamson, said Wednesday that the ship “had been the vanguard for proving the capabilities of the LCS platform and establishing the mission sets.”

“The dedication of her crews and supporting teams have guaranteed the future success of this class of ship and the crews that will operate them over-the horizon,” Lamson said, according to the Navy release. “I am proud to have served alongside her Sailors, and I am grateful for the opportunity to give Coronado the farewell she deserves.”

Once billed as the future of the fleet, the LCS program has been hindered by mission modules that haven’t materialized, as well as class-wide propulsion and hull crack issues that have plagued the Freedom and Independence LCS classes, respectively.

The LCS program was first announced more than 20 years ago, in November 2001, and was conceived and sold to lawmakers and the public as an ideal ship for a world in which the United States was the sole superpower.

But planners back then might not have been considering the possibility that the U.S. Navy would have to one day contend with conventional adversaries like China and Russia, and questions have since emerged about the ship class’s ability to survive a battle with a rival navy.

coronado navy ship tour

Fixing first four littoral combat ships not worth it, US Navy says

Future testing and training will be conducted on newer and modernized vessels..

The first two LCS, Freedom and Independence, have already been mothballed, and the third LCS, Fort Worth, is also slated for the chopping block.

Navy brass are trying to divest themselves of as many LCS as possible in order to free up funding for other priorities, a tacit acknowledgement that the LCS fleet has not done what it was originally envisioned to do.

Still, Navy leaders, including Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, have said they are “bullish” on the LCS’s ability to provide presence in the West Pacific while conducting drug interdiction missions in the waters near South America and the Caribbean.
