Road to Zanzibar

Wonderful experience of Serengeti, Ngorogoro Crater, Omoroko mountains and Zanzibar. Camping was fine, good food, great people, wonderful guides and not too expensive. But way too much driving in between.

Tanzania to Zanzibar: White Sands & the Wilderness Tour

Tanzania to Zanzibar: White Sands & the Wilderness

Absoloutly incredible and life changing. This is the raw safari. We saw everything there was to offer. The guides really know how to find the animals. We camped amongst the animals. I met a hyena in the night and the following night had a zebra grazing outside my tent. Then pure relaxation down in zanzibar. So the right mix of wild and relaxation

I can't even describe how special and amazing this tour was. Pete and Francis (our guides) are truly what made the trip so amazing. They were both so kind, thoughtful and caring. It felt like a family away from home. Yes, the tour itself was extraordinary. The sites, sounds, tastes etc. Amazing. However, it is the people that make this tour and these people will always mean. The world to myself and my husband. If you go on this tour request these guides! You won't regret it!

Tanzania zanzibar holiday / vacation reviews.

The Intrepid travel Road to Zanzibar was absolutely fantastic. The organisation of the whole trip was very good. I would highly recommend.
Amazing experience. An incredible safari seeing so many animals with a very knowledgeable guide, then after exploring the beauty of Zanzibar. Very good tour leaders and a great bunch of travellers. Memories that will last a lifetime
Not long back from this tour and I had a great time so I thought I'd let others know. Overall, the tour was well organised and the guides ensured we felt safe at all times. The truck was well equipped and I was surprised at how comfortable the seats were - so comfortable I was able to sleep despite the 'African massages' along the way. Despite the fact that some of the journeys were quite long, being able to sleep certainly helped. Some of the journeys on this trip are quite long but they are unavoidable if you want to see these parts of Africa. Anyway, the route was quite scenic and the guides provided info about the surrounding area along the way and we stopped every so often to stretch our legs. The main guide, Sammy, also informed us when to stock up on snacks and drinks at the better supermarkets as a lot of the local shops were poorly supplied as you can imagine. Most of the stops had some form of toilet however my group found that the bush toilets were generally cleaner (this is Africa after all). The tents provided were pretty good and the mattresses were spot on too. I have to say, one of the things I was anxious about before going on the trip was the quality of the meals as catering for large groups often leads to small portions of massively overdone food but both Sam and Ali were great cooks and we always had plenty to eat. We also stopped at local kitchens to try some of the local cuisine for lunch which was another good experience. Our particular group had lots of allergies/food intolerances (seafood, nuts, dairy, gluten and shellfish to name a few) and Sam always provided options for these people - to the extent that one person had to reject his meals so they could use up some of their own food to create some room in their suitcase. Finally, our guide Sammy was excellent along the way and his local knowledge was invaluable for us between helping getting currency changed to recommending where to buy gifts etc. One of the more negative reviews says to do this trip on your own steam which seems like a very romantic idea but without being able to speak the local language (Sam can speak 8 apparently) and knowing how to deal with the corrupt policemen you will only end up wishing you had someone like Sam guiding you. Bad point(s0: When I was at Lake Malawi the lake was quite rough so snorkelling wasn't going to be worthwhile but I guess it's just one of those things and Acacia can't exactly control the weather Highlights of the trip: South Luangwa - we were fortunate to get VERY close to a pair of lions in heat The Serengeti - seeing The Great Wildebeest Migration was spectacular Would recommend.

Table of Contents

The best 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar Tours

Price of a 10 day tanzania safari and zanzibar trip.

A 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour starts at about $2,800 per person. Mid-range lodge tours start at $3,800 per person whilst luxury tours start at around $5,000 per person. There are many factors determining the price of a 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach combo trip.

Safari combo packages to Zanzibar and Tanzania span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 10 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is 10 days safari in tanzania and zanzibar sufficient.

10 days is plenty of time to see and experience the thrills of a Tanzania safari in the Serengeti, whilst leaving enough time to explore the beaches, sights and smells of the historic Stone Town in Zanzibar.

The number of days required to effectively complete a combined safari and beach combo trip can range from anywhere between 1-2 weeks, depending on the visitor’s time and budget.

Each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. In Tanzania, a safari here is like nowhere else in the world, with a reputation for prime game viewing, the surreal Serengeti plains, luxury lodges, stunning beaches and of course, the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, visitors will be delighted with their trip here.

Accommodation offered on a 10 days Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible Zanzibar and Tanzania landscapes and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation Africa has to offer. The accommodation offered on safari and beach combination trips is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges, there’s something for everyone here. Guests can also go fishing, walking or hot-air ballooning before enjoying an outdoor bath and sundowners and dinner in the bush.

Must do on a 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip

The most popular option for a 10 days Tanzania safari is the world renowned Serengeti National Park . A popular honeymoon destination and documentary location in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti plains are home to the world’s largest movement of animals including the Big 5, often called the “Great Migration.”

It’s also one of the oldest and most scientifically significant ecosystems on the planet. Its weather patterns, fauna and flora are believed to have changed very little over a million years, giving the area a prehistoric feel.

The landscape of the Serengeti Plain is also extremely varied, ranging from savannah, to hilly woodlands, to open grasslands. Apart from rhinos and hunting dogs, visitors will readily see every species of African savanna mammal within the Serengeti.

Whilst in Zanzibar, a trip to one of their famous beaches is of course essential! Pamunda Island is a small island off the beaten track is a haven for stunning sandy beaches, turquoise waters and small coves, perfect for beach walks and water based activities.

Whilst the capital of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a historic old part of the capital of Zanzibar and melting pot of Indian, European, Arab and Swahili cultures. Stone Town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a rich and storied past, perfect for visitors to wander around.

Animals on a Tanzania safari?

You’ll find just about everything in the Tanzania safari! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas and hippos.

Tanzania contains the highest concentration of lions in the world with over 3,000 of them found in the Serengeti alone and about 1.5 million wildebeests, in addition to wildebeest, gazelle, giraffes, black rhinos. A view of these huge wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

If you enjoy driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 5 day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.

The Serengeti and the crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. A 5 day trip to Ruaha or Selous in the south can also be very productive where you’ll see lions, wild dogs, antelopes and kudu.

How much money do I need for a 10 day Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $320 for a Zanzibar Tanzania safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Combination safaris in Zanzibar and Tanzania can be more expensive due to the higher costs of accommodation, transport and food.

What animals will I see on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar safari tour?

Visitors on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar combination safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania tour?

The best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania safari is from June to October when there’s practically no rain and daytime temperatures are not too hot. With an overall moderate climate, Zanzibar and Tanzania however are considered a great year-round safari and beach destination.

Zanzibar is a truly wonderful island that offers some of the finest tropical beaches within Africa. The name itself has captivated travellers imagination over the years and certainly lives up to expectations. Alongside the idyllic, crystal clear sea and vibrant reefs, excellent for diving, the island has a rich cultural and historical offering, particularly within the old Stone Town.

Zanzibar Safari Holidays

Zanzibar is very combinable with a safari in East Africa and tends to be an ideal beach bolt on to safaris in Tanzania and Kenya.

Zanzibar offers a real mix of accommodation choices with many of our favourites being the smaller boutique lodges offering a true Zanzibari experience. However, there are one or two resort-style hotels that offer a wider choice of activities and are often more suitable for families.

The archipelago’s turquoise seas are as stunning below as above the water line allowing for some magnificent diving. Manta rays, green turtles, hawksbill plus barracudas add to the array of colour with opportunities for wall dives nearer Pemba.

Zanzibar has seen a growth in visitor numbers in recent years but fortunately has remained relatively unspoiled or exploited. To really enjoy your time on the island it is important to find the right style and character of accommodation to suit you. The range is broad from large mainstream resorts to small exclusive hideaways; busy “backpackers” beach huts to private boutique guesthouses.

Click on the links in the right-hand margin for accommodation options or our favourite:

Luxury beach lodges are Matemwe Bungalows, Kilindi, Unguja Beach Lodge or Fumba Beach Lodge.

Lower cost beach guesthouses but still offering something special are Pongwe Beach, Kasha Boutique, Matemwe Beach, Shooting Star or Echo Beach.

Cool places to stay in Stone Town are Beyt Al Chai, 236 Hurumzi, Swahili House or Serena Inn.

Ultimate exclusivity at Mnemba Island.

Day 1 – Tarangire National Park

Your Safari Tanzania and Zanzibar package starts today with the Tarangire National Park , about a 2 hour drive from the tourist capital Arusha. Tarangire Park is named after the Tarangire River, which is the park’s lifeblood. The Tarangire National Park is home to Africa’s largest population of elephants and the second-largest population of lions. Baobab trees are plentiful throughout the park and can easily be spotted because of their distinctive silhouettes against the blue sky. In the evening we will drive to Africa Safari Lake Manyara where you overnight in a furnished comfort tent with private bathroom. You can take a dive into the swimming pool and enjoy a sun-downer drink at the bar.

Day 2 – Lake Manyara National Park

At 325 square kilometers, Manyara National Park is certainly small by Tanzanian standards, but don’t let that put you off. It is, quite simply, amazing. Bordered by the dramatic Rift Valley, the rest of the park is a pretty medley of grassy floodplains, enchanting evergreen forest, acacia woodland and twinkling groundwater springs. And of course Lake Manyara itself, a glittering and iridescent alkaline pool that expands and contracts with the seasons. Here you can find a big population of flamingo. Late afternoon you drive back to Africa Safari Lake Manyara where you spend the night in your spacious comfort en-suite tent again.

Day 3 – Serengeti National Park

On day three we will head towards the Serengeti National Park . After a few hour drive we will be greeted by the Serengeti, one of the most iconic African wildlife reserves. The Serengeti is home to many different types of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalos and more. On our Safari through the park we’ll stop to watch some of the animals at their natural habitats. We’ll learn about their lifestyles as well as the threats they face in their habitats. Toward the evening we arrive at Africa Safari Serengeti Ikoma where you over night in a fully furnished comfort tent with private bathroom.

Your Safari Tanzania and Zanzibar Package offers you the optional activity of visiting a traditional Maasai village in the Ikoma Wildlife Management Area

Day 4 – Ikoma Wildlife Management Area

The next day we will start the day with a game drive in the Ikoma Wildlife Management Area . This area supports a variety of wildlife across 242 square kilometres of pristine wilderness including herds of elephant, waterbuck, Black and White colobus monkeys, shy leopard and both the Greater and the Lesser Kudu. In the afternoon we will explore the area by foot with a ranger (walking Safari) and you can ask questions about the park’s wildlife, plants and geology. You will learn about the local people living so close to the border of the Serengeti. A truly unique experience! You spend another night camping at Africa Safari Serengeti Ikoma.

Day 5 – Serengeti National Park

Today we go on another game drive in the Serengeti – home to every member of the Big Five. You can ask your guide what you want to discover, every piece of the Serengeti offers something unique. Whether it’s spying on wild dog, watching rhino amble through the brush near Kopjes or losing your breath at the sight of big cats chasing down their prey. At the end of the day we head to Ndutu/South Serengeti where we overnight at Africa Safari South Serengeti . The area is famous for the calving season of the Great Migration, an absolute highlight of the annual wildebeest migration.

Day 6 – Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will proceed to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive with a picnic lunch. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cavernous bowl-shaped crater is in fact a caldera, formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself. Today, this ‘flat pan’ is covered with grasses and home to an unprecedented number animals including the black rhino, lions, magnificent elephants and smaller game. Due to the elevation of the Ngorongoro area it enjoys more rain throughout the year so most of the animals don’t need to migrate. With a bit of luck the ‘Big Five’ can be spotted during one game drive only. After this exciting game drive we return back to Arusha where you overnight at the Africa Safari Arusha Lodge .

Day 7 – Stone Town / Shaba Boutique Hotel

After breakfast your driver brings you to the small Arusha airport. From this domestic aerodrome you will fly for about 80 minutes to Zanzibar. When you arrive our local staff will pick you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel. The first night you stay at Shaba Boutique Hotel which is located in a beautiful and characteristic building in the heart of the old centre of Stone Town. In the afternoon and/or the next morning you can explore Stone Town. Walk through the narrow streets and capture the feeling of the old colonial Arabic Architecture. You can visit former slave market, the Anglican Cathedral, the House of Wonders or the old Arab fort.

Enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean on the tropical Zanzibar Archipelago

Day 8 to 11 – Southeast Zanzibar / Reef & Beach Resort

The next day we will bring you to the beautiful Reef & Beach Resort which is located on the Southeastern coast of Zanzibar. Reef & Beach resort is a spacious holiday complex by the sea with over 600 metres of sea front. The beaches are pristine and the ocean is clear blue. It’s closely located to the reef and there is always a fresh breeze from the Indian Ocean, where you will be surrounded by the best service possible, in perfect harmony with nature. Customizable Itinerary

Arusha - relaxation after arrival.

Keep your eyes peeled as you fly over African savannahs and land into Kilimmanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania. The inimitable landscapes of East Africa await and their sheer size is breathtaking from above. You'll be met at the airport and transferred to your first beautiful lodge. Fragrantly situated in a rolling coffee plantation, the lodge offers a home away from home but also a glimpse into exotic Africa. Monkeys sometimes swing through the grounds and the coffee can't get any fresher.

What's Included:

Lake Manyara - Unique Safari at Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara's flying residents provide a noisy start to your safari experience. Over 300 individual bird species can be spotted in the park, but it's the raucous hornbills that try to dominate the soundtrack. After breakfast you'll have a short drive to Lake Manyara National Park, where the hornbills aren't the only birds vying for your attention. Thousands of flamingos wade in the shallows of the lake, forming a pink blanket that's the centerpiece of this national park. They're joined in the water by large pods of hippos, the playful beasts resting from the sun or rolling around the muddy embankments.

Lake Manyara offers an ideal first African safari. It offers an eclectic mix of animals, but the winding woodlands ensure that you rarely see any other safari trucks. By the lake, and in the grassy clearings, you'll get your first glimpses of Africa's largest mammals. Buffalos return your stare, their bushy frames usually providing tick one on your Big Five list. African elephant bulls wander alone, graceful creatures that can be distinguished from Asian elephants by their larger size and ears. Even from a distance you can see that their ears are shaped like a map of Africa. Giraffes silently munch on the high trees, the most elegant of creatures adding their own unique colors to Lake Manyara.

In the clearings these great mammals are easy to spot, but in the thick forest there is also a remarkable concentration of wildlife. You'll be immersed in this animal world as you spend two nights deep within the mahogany forest. This intimate experience will bring the wildlife to you. Listen to bird song from your enchanting treehouse, watch baboons troop past from the balcony, and savor the chattering of bush babies and monkeys in the trees. Sumptuous meals and local drinks are included as are game drives in the park. You'll have a long afternoon game drive on day two before morning and afternoon game drives on day three.

Stealthily resting in the trees is another of Lake Manyara's unique residents. In the dense forest the safari truck stops. The engine is cut off. Your guide is pointing, but as you scour the trees with binoculars you can't find what he's so excited about. A quick movement almost makes you jump. Was that? Was it? It's a lion's tale, swinging from a branch. You definitely don't need the binoculars, this lion is just meters away, and it's been watching you the whole time. Unique to Lake Manyara and Tarangire, these graceful tree climbing lions are the highlight of a safari here. If you're lucky you'll also get glimpse of the other predators that hide in these trees: leopards and cheetah.

Tarangire National Park - Giant Elephant Herds

There are no boring journeys in northern Tanzania. You'll do a game drive en route to Tarangire National Park, spotting the diverse assortment of animals that wander between Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Impalas and wildebeest stand impassively as you drive past, while elephant herds can be seen around the fringes of Tarangire. Once inside the park their numbers grow, great herds, 300 strong, providing a surreal viewing experience. From a distance it's their size that's impressive. But admire them from up close and the herd teems with charming interactions. Babies test their boundaries under a mother's watchful eye. Youngsters are getting used to their power, comically chasing warthogs away from water holes. Large males dictate the herd's movements, leading their family across a landscape that's dotted with spectacular baobab trees.

Nestled into a secluded area of Tarangire, settle into your luxury tent that is lifted on stilts and surround an enormous baobab tree. A stunning infinity swimming pool overlooks a water hole, guests and mammals watching each other as they enjoy water for very different reasons. From the lodge verandah, a vast savannah offers prime wildlife viewing. Zebra herds wander past, each set of black and white stripes as unique as a person's fingerprints. Waterbuck and giraffe can be spotted on the horizon, and on a long game drive you'll be getting much closer to these gracious mammals. Lions lurk in the baobab trees, elephants cover the trail, while the sight of a bat eared fox reveals one of the park's rare residents. During the night the sound of rustling perforates through the thick canvas tents. Lying in large double beds you wonder what it could be. A set of animal footprints will reveal the culprit in the morning.

Ngorongoro - Ngorongoro Crater

A scenic road winds towards the Ngorongoro Crater rim, mischievous baboons watching the road as you ascend through a verdant forest. Even by East Africa's lofty standards, this inactive volcano is a freak of nature. Known as Africa's “Garden of Eden,” the Ngorongoro crater floor is home to a permanent population of 30,000 mammals. But from above it's a bird that catches the eye, innumerable flamingos turning the lake pink, their shocking color juxtaposed against the rich green landscape.

On day five your afternoon isn't scheduled, and some might enjoy savoring the view and relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of your lodge. This is one of Tanzania's most sublime lodges, and it immaculately blends local Maasai tradition with modern luxury. A butler quietly caters to all your needs while Maasai warriors ensure no wildlife gets too close. From your intimate wooden deck you can watch the Ngorongoro procession. First a small herd of zebra descends into the crater. Then a large bull elephant. Now three Maasai herdsmen carrying spears. On this relaxed afternoon, others might prefer walking along the crater rim or making a visit to a local Maasai village. Whatever you choose, it's an afternoon indulging in a world that hasn't changed for hundreds of years.

Ngorongoro - The Big Five in One Day

Anticipation hangs in the air as the first blades of light tinge the morning sky. Descending the steep crater slopes you head into the world's largest intact caldera for a full day on safari. An eerie silence accompanies the fading mist, and the crater's residents are on full alert. Morning time offers ideal hunting conditions and lion prides are roaming through the crater, considering what's going to be on the breakfast menu. Perhaps a waterbuck that's hiding in the Lerai forest, or an old Thompson's gazelle that stands lonely and fearful. No, this lion pride is after a feast. A common eland usually weighs over half a ton and their distinctly straight horns provide a dangerous defense. But the proliferation of lions in the crater is partly explained by their superior hunting skills. It's extremely rare to visit Ngorongoro Crater and not see at least a couple of lion prides. They could be lazing in the shade, their stomach's full and their glorious manes just meters from the safari truck. Or you could have front row seats as they stalk and pounce on prey.

Nowhere else in the world can match Ngorongoro Crater's sheer concentration of wildlife. Six different habitats provide havens for a distinct cast of residents. In the forest you'll find some of Africa's largest elephants. Beside a lake you can stop for a picnic lunch and admire hippos and many thirsty antelopes. Out on the grassy savannah watch hyenas search for an easy meal. Then the ferocious horns of a buffalo give a clue as to why they're regarded as the most dangerous of the Big Five. With good luck you'll also spot leopards, the elegant cats silently creeping out of the trees. Many times it's difficult to know which way to look. The crater walls encase a landscape that can be easily scanned and admired with binoculars. Have a look, spot something new, and then slowly approach it for prime viewing.

Over a roaring evening fire you call the day's events, struggling to remember each of the unique sightings from the crater floor. Yet there is one that will always linger in the memory. A pair of black rhino slowly plods through the grass, their telltale horns proudly pointing skyward. Critically endangered, there are only around 5,000 of these majestic animals left in the wild. As they come near the safari truck there are shrieks of excitement. Shaking hands fumble with the camera. Eyes are wide open and fixated. Then silence descends over the safari truck as everyone serenely watches the rhinos wander past. Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the few places in the world where you can see the entire Big Five in just one game drive. Hopefully, the rhinos will have completed the set.

Serengeti National Park - Stunning Safari in the Famous Serengeti

From the enclosed haven of Ngorongoro you head onto the endless grass plains of the Serengeti. Whereas Ngorongoro is compact and concentrated, the Serengeti is vast and wild. These plains are home to the Great Migration, and during the early months of the year, your accommodation will be surrounded by giant herds of zebra, Thompson's gazelle and wildebeest. Over 2 million wildebeest migrate around the Serengeti, and the size of these herds is often unbelievable. They cover the grass, turning the plains into a great patchwork quilt of hoofs and swirling dust. From a distance it's a staggering sight, tens of thousands grouped together for safety. A closer inspection reveals that there are perhaps hundreds of thousands in just one herd. It's a staggering sight, and it gets better from up close. Baby wildebeest are carefully guarded, a cheetah accelerates and pounces on a lame male, while a sudden fearful jump causes half the herd to blindly panic.

After leaving Ngorongoro Crater you'll first stop at Olduvai Gorge, an area which holds an integral key to human evolution. Fossils and tools indicate that this site was occupied by Homo habilis and Homo erectus, and the two million years of history in this gorge offer a humbling interruption to the wildlife viewing. This was where early man developed and without Olduvai Gorge perhaps none of us would be here today. Kusini has a secluded and remote location in the Serengeti, offering idyllic vistas and private game viewing. While parts of the Serengeti can get crowded with safari trucks, at Kusini you won't have anything on four wheels to scar your photographs. Don't worry if you're not arriving during the Great Migration, the Serengeti is a spectacular sight at all times of year.

Flat landscape and clean air offer exceptional visibility across the plains, meaning that the Serengeti's unique life is easily viewable from your balcony. Three giraffe necks stand out against the horizon, while the size of elephant and buffalo make them easy to spot from a distance. Klipspringer emerge from the nearby woodland, while zebra and Thompson's gazelle pass by so frequently you barely turn your head. At nighttime the action continues, although it’s often the sounds rather than the sights that alert you to something meandering past the camp.

These plains offer impeccable hunting conditions. Leopards and cheetahs join the lion prides, an abundance of big cats all finding easy meals in this plentiful landscape. With solemn precision a leopard dips his neck and blends into the grass. It's waiting. Its actions are calculated and careful. Watch too many wildlife documentaries and you'll be forgiven for thinking that a hunt lasts just a couple of furious minutes. Out in the Serengeti there's a good chance of watching how it really unfolds, including the drawn out skillful approach, the brief shock of the unsuspecting herd, and then the sudden ferocity of an attack.

Day  9 - 12

Bwejuu-Paje Beach - Serenity of Zanzibar Island

After seven days on safari, the final part of your vacation reveals another of Tanzania's unique wonders. For over 1,000 years Zanzibar has ignited the imagination of travelers. Pristine white sand is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, fringed by postcard perfect palm trees. The island offers a soporific loop of beach perfection, the gentle waves and mellow atmosphere enough to lull anyone into hibernation. Time becomes irrelevant as you settle into Zanzibar's beachside rhythm, each day offering a slow blend of relaxing, swimming, reading, and indulging in your sumptuous surroundings.

You'll fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, where you'll be met and driven to your luxurious accommodations. You will be staying on the quiet Bwejuu- Paje Beach, a strip of sand that Conde Nest Traveler Magazine named as one of top thirty beaches in the world.  Your five night stay is on an all-inclusive basis in a villa. Decorated in a boutique style that evokes Zanzibar's rich heritage, your villa and resort offers unrivaled levels of intimacy and exclusivity on the island. Your 193 square meter villa has a large private terrace and plunge pool as well as two bathrooms and a large living area.

On Zanzibar Island it's easy to unwind and do nothing. But this island has fascinated visitors for more reasons than just the beach. Out in the ocean, beneath the water, a tropical collection of fish dance for anybody out snorkeling or diving. Pungent smells take people on a fragrant journey through the island's unique spice farms. Prison Island doesn't sound appealing. It was once used to house rebellious slaves and witnessing the remains of the prison is both poignant and harrowing. But the main attraction today is the endangered Albadra giant tortoises that wander along the sand.

Every stay in Zanzibar should include a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Stone Town. Haphazard streets create a disorientating labyrinth that takes you on an atmospheric journey through the past and present. Intricate wooden doors reveal homes with a rich past, old men push carts laden with oranges, while the smell of fried goat wafts through the luring alleyways. On one corner stands a Hindu Temple. Nearby, the simplicity of the Malindi Mosque has a calming effect. Walk around another corner and admire the 19th century Cathedral of St Joseph, Zanzibar proving how different cultures can peacefully coexist.

Stone Town - Depart for Home

In the morning, your private transfer will take you to the airport in Stone Town. Persian baths, Portuguese architecture, British colonial buildings, rich Islamic courtyards, and Indian influences continue to decorate the island capital. Wandering through Stone Town is an ode to the successful integration of disparate styles. Yet it's the modern impressions that often enchant the most; the harmonic call to prayer from the town's mosques, local men crowding round a game of dominos, boisterous cafes full of chatter and sweet glasses of tea. You will arrive at Zanzibar International Airport with plenty of time to check-in to your flight home.

Immersion in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

You will be taken, after breakfast, to explore the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, one of the most famous safari sites in the world, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and an International Biosphere Reserve in 1981. The Ngorongoro Crater , the area of greatest interest, is located at 2,200 meters above sea level, and is the largest uninterrupted caldera in the world, and one of Africa’s natural wonders with approximately 30,000 large mammals living here all year round, such as buffaloes, lions, elephants, cheetahs and rhinoceroses, along with many bird varieties, such as flamingos, eagles, buzzards, ostriches and hawks.

The crater’s center is occupied by the shallow waters of Lake Magadi , which tends to dry up during the dry season, and is the best place from which to observe flocks of flamingos and crowned cranes, as well as several herbivores, especially the large number of wildebeests and zebras who drink here, attracting lions and hyenas.

We leave for the park early in the morning and return to the lodge by 18:00.

Visit Serengeti national park

Visit to the Serengeti National Park

The fourth day will begin with a visit to the Serengeti National Park, this extraordinary place where legend meets reality. The Serengeti is the oldest and largest park in Tanzania, covering an area of 14,763 square kilometres, so much so that its name, of Masai origin, Siringet, means “ Plain without borders “.

Here you will find boundless plains, watch the great migration of herbivores, especially wildebeests and zebras, including prides of lions and other predators such as hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, jackals and crocodiles.

We set out for the park early in the morning and return to the tent camp by about 6 p.m.

Dinner and overnight accommodation at the tented camp.

Animals in the Serengeti park

The Fauna of Serengeti Park

We will continue our discovery of the extraordinary Serengeti National Park on the fifth day, moving towards the centre of the Park. The boundless prairies are occasionally interrupted by eccentric granite formations – kopjes, which often contain small pools of rainwater, attracting a variety of small animals, as well as large predators such as lions who enjoy lying in them or hiding in wait for a possible prey.

The rivers are lined with plenty of tracks where you can see crocodiles, hippos, and many other animals coming to drink. The area is also home to leopards, who often bask in the branches of the umbrella acacia.

We leave for the park early in the morning and return to the lodge at about 18:00.

Visit Lake Manyara National Park

Manyara Park

We are already on day six, during which the safari continues with a tour of the Lake Manyara National Park , one of the parks in Tanzania with the highest biodiversity. Covering only 330 square kilometres, 230 of which are occupied by the lake, it is possible to encounter five different ecosystems here. The park is inhabited by over 380 types of birds and a large number of animal species, including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, leopards, lions, baboons, hippos, antelopes, warthogs and many others.

We will leave early in the morning for the park and return to the lodge at about 18:00.

Visit Arusha market

Trip to Arusha and departure for the airport – Arrival in Zanzibar

The last day of the safari will be well organized as well, and after breakfast, if possible, you can take a trip to the Arusha market, to indulge one last time in shopping and and buying of souvenirs for friends and family. You will then be taken to the airport (Arusha or Kilimanjaro) to continue your journey to the beautiful island of Zanzibar.

Once in Zanzibar, you will be welcomed and accompanied to your accommodation.

The guide takes you straight to your hotel, where you can relax and take in the African atmosphere. The next day your guide takes you on an exclusive, private safari that allows you to travel at your own pace. Enjoy the luxury of your own safari jeep and take the liberty to stop and watch the animals as long as you like!

Tarangire National Park is well known for its big groups of elephants and the huge amount of giant baobab trees. These trees can live for hundreds of years and are actually a source of water for elephants in the dry season as they have a special technique to draw water from them. Besides, the Tarangire River is the only source of water in the dry season, which is why in this season in Tarangire you can see groups of up to 250 elephants next to many more animals!

Day 3 - 4: Serengeti National Park (central west/east)

Serengeti National Park is widely known as the place to go on safari, mainly because of the Great Migration that passes through here. The enormous, stampeding herds are impressive, as are the vast amount of predators that live here: over four thousand lions, 225 cheetahs, a thousand leopards, 3500 hyenas and hundreds of wild dogs! And of course, plenty of other beautiful animals, which your guide will be delighted to search for together with you. Are you ready for this?

The famous Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's seven natural wonders. The crater was formed two million years ago when a vast volcano erupted. The fertile lava has created a unique ecosystem, now home to the highest concentration of animals found anywhere in Africa! Once in the crater, thousands of animals such as lions, zebras, buffalos and black rhinos surround you, and the views are astounding – you won’t know where to look! Watch the video of the park here .

Today you fly to the spice island of Zanzibar. You will be picked up at the airport by your guide and taken to your hotel.

Over the next few days, you can discover white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs. Immerse yourself in the rich culture and history of Stone Town, visit spice plantations and enjoy the delicious local cuisine. The tropical paradise awaits you!

Day 7 - 9: Zanzibar

Ultimate paradise is here: gorgeous, tropical Zanzibar! The clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the palm-fringed, white sandy beaches are almost too beautiful to be true. Buy your coconut drink fresh on the beach, spend hours sunbathing or swimming, and taste the delicious Zanzibari food. In the mood for something active? Then explore the beach, ocean, and island through a range of activities ! We highly recommend the Safari Blue Cruise or a tour of Stone Town.

The last day! Depending on your flight time, you can relax on the beach or explore the island just a little bit more. A driver then takes you to Zanzibar International Airport in time for your flight home. Having second thoughts? It's also possible to extend your holiday to another paradise island , such as Mnemba, Pemba, or Mafia!

Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Beaches

  • View wildlife of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater
  • Delight in the thrill and adventure of a classic safari
  • Enjoy Zanzibar beaches and tropical fish
  • Comfortable overnights in lodges & private luxury camps
  • Meals, admissions, and park entrance fees
  • Transportation, airport pick-up, and in-country flights

Tanzania provides all the essential elements of a classic African Safari adventure of a lifetime. The largest country in East Africa and situated just south of the equator, Tanzania has a truly magnificent variety of landscapes and 12 national parks that are unsurpassed in beauty and variety. Among its unspoiled savannah one can still find Maasai nomads and millions of wild animals. Tanzania is home to over 40 species of mammals, including elephant, giraffe, cape buffalo, hippo, rhinoceros, zebra, wildebeest, antelope, warthog, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, and many more.

Tanzania is also a bird watcher's paradise with too many species to list.  Who can say which bird is more spectacular? The greater flamingo, secretary bird, crowned crane, lilac-breasted roller, kori bustard, lily trotter, spoonbill stork, marabou stork, the bee eaters, or any of a dozen others.

Of all the African wildlife areas, none surpasses Tanzania's for spectacular scenery and number of animals. Our safari takes us from the green foothills of snow-mantled Mount Kilimanjaro (the continent's highest mountain at 19,340 feet); through the limitless expanse of the Serengeti Plain (a World Heritage site) and to the misty Ngoronogoro Crater (the world’s largest intact caldron, which measures 12 miles across). And if these natural wonders are not enough, the trip will also visit historic places like Oldovai Gorge, the site of Leakey's discovery of early human bones, near the very dawn of human existence.

The Serengeti National Park’s name is derived from the Maasai language “Siringet,” which means "endless plains." Within an area of 5,700 square miles we’ll find a staggering animal population of about four million, including huge herds of zebra, wildebeest and other grazing animals. Over 350 species of birds and 35 larger mammals can be found here. Each game drive will feature different animals and surprises.  The skill and experience of our driver guides will be obvious as they look for animal viewing opportunities.

In addition to wildlife observation, this outing also offers opportunities to learn about Tanzania's Maasai ethnic group, and to see a vast cross-section of Tanzania -- the largest country in East Africa and the continent's most politically stable.

We will be accompanied at all times by an accomplished Tanzanian naturalist/guide who will be able to identify and tell us all about the wildlife encountered. We will listen for the sounds of the bush as we enjoy our comfortable camps and lodges. In settings of incomparable beauty and grandeur, we will savor the African dawn and sunset.

At the end of our safari, we are in for a treat.  We will fly over the Serengetti to Arusha, and then we fly to Zanzibar!

Off Tanzania's coast is the exotic Zanzibar Archipelago, consisting of over 50 islands, most of which have a long history and a rich cultural mix. The best known island here is Zanzibar (or Unguja Island, as it is more properly known). Zanzibar is the ultimate Indian Ocean experience.

Not everyone has heard of this unique place and its fascinating historical Stone Town, magnificent beaches and reefs.  We will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of options there.  We snorkel, enjoy the different beaches, hike in a national park, go on a Spice Island tour, as well as enjoy a dhow ride into the sunset! This island will be a fun and relaxing way to conclude the exciting safari.

One of Zanzibar's main industries is spices. The islands are covered with small farms and the air is thick with the aroma of spices growing there -- it's an exotic atmosphere. The islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. That is why the islands, together with Tanzania's Mafia Island, are sometimes called the Spice Islands (a term also associated with the Maluku Islands in Indonesia).

The beaches on these islands are stunning. Most are powdery white sand, shaded by palm trees. Picture perfect! The sea is shallow and tropical, and the reefs are great for snorkeling.

The heart of Zanzibar is Stone Town and it's a labyrinth of narrow alleys complete with palaces, mosques, and tiny shops. We will come here and soak up the atmosphere.

Zanzibar also has its share of exotic animals. It is the home of the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, the Zanzibar servaline genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar leopard. We’ll hike in Jozani National Park and try to see the red colobus monkey.

At the conclusion of this side-excursion, we will take a flight to Dar es Salaam, where our trip ends and we will be in time to take the KLM (or other) flight back to your home. Or you may choose to extend your trip in Africa or somewhere along the way.

Day 1:  The outing begins in the city of Arusha with an early morning orientation. Later we visit the Arusha Cultural Center fine arts museum and the Shanga House arts center for persons with disabilities, and enjoy a casual lunch surrounded by a coffee plantation. In the afternoon we are transferred to the School of St. Jude to meet students and tour this outstanding charity school that is helping to break the poverty cycle for children. In the evening we learn about Tanzania history and culture from a community leader and enjoy a welcome dinner.

Days 2-3:  After breakfast, we drive to Tarangire National Park, the “Baobab Capital of the World,” where we will be for two nights. During this time of the year, nearly three thousand elephants are returning to the park to join another 3,500 resident elephants that call Tarangire home year-round. Wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and antelopes are also migrating from the surrounding areas for only water source within 1,600 square miles of protected wildlife area. Birds are equally abundant, with over 550 recorded species . It is truly a favorite place to be for wildlife...and therefore, for humans!

Day 4:  We depart after breakfast and do game drives in the morning. Lunch will be a real treat. It will be served at a historic farm that grows its own vegetables. We will be able to tour the grounds, too. And anyone interested in coffee to take home will be able to purchase the local coffee from this farm. After our lunch, we stop at a native Iraqw Village to understand their way of life and daily activities. We are in a hotel for one night here.

Days 5-6:  We will depart with box lunches and then enjoy a game drive in the famous Ngorongoro Crater. The Ngorongoro crater is home to over 30,000 animals including elephants, lions, cheetahs, wildebeests, buffaloes, and the rare black rhinos. It is in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ngorongoro Crater was created from a volcano that exploded creating the caldera wilderness haven. The crater is 12 miles across and has 102 square mile of wilderness. The rim of the crater rises just over 2,000 feet above the caldera floor reaching an elevation of 7,500 feet. It is the largest un-flooded and unbroken caldera in the world and the view is a breathtaking.  We will spend the whole day there observing the wildlife in this wilderness haven! We will stop at the Olduvai Gorge Archaeological Museum and gorge overlook which is the site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s archaeological work. It was here that Mary Leakey discovered the earliest known humanoid footprints, which were solidified in volcanic ash some 3.6 million years ago.  Standing at the top of the Gorge envisioning early ancestors evokes a feeling of returning home to the birthplace of humankind, quietly reminding us that we are all related.  We stay for two nights at a lodge on the rim of the crater.

Day 7:  This morning we drive to the central Serengeti. The word “Serengeti” means “Endless plains." Here, we are in search of the many “cats” that reside here. The leopards, cheetahs and lions to name a few. We also see the various antelope species and other species as well. We will arrive at our luxury camp (running water, comfortable beds, electricity, and flush toilets in each large tent) for an evening of dinner under the stars (weather permitting) and turn in for a restful night. We spend two nights at this lovely site.

Day 8:  We will wake to the call of birds, or perhaps the howl of monkeys, or the roar of a lion. The fresh air and sounds of the wild will be all around you.  This is where the heart of the activity will be. To optimize opportunities to view cheetahs and other wildlife, we leave before sunrise and return for brunch and rest (while the animals typically also rest in the heat of the day). Late-afternoon drives allow us to enjoy the interesting light and increased activity of the predators. After these excursions, you will be met back at camp with cold beverages, appetizers, hot showers, and a gourmet meal.

Day 9: We depart our luxury camp, and are in for a treat. First, we fly from the Central Serengeti to Arusha. Many times you are able to see herds of animals on the plains below. Once in Arusha, we will take an afternoon flight (both flights are included in the price of the trip) to Zanzibar. The flight leaves Arusha near noon and arrives in Zanzibar in the early afternoon. We should get a glimpse of some beautiful scenery below, as well as Zanzibar Island as we approach it. After arriving at our charming ecolodge and getting settled in, we will enjoy a dhow cruise to enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Indian Ocean. We will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. There, we'll also get to know our hosts and learn about how they assist the local native community and protect the regional environment.

Day 10: Today some of the group may want to relax and have a leisurely morning and beach time, while others depart early via a private shuttle bus for Stone Town. There we'll board a dhow to snorkel a reef full of amazing coral and colorful tropical fish -- all while enjoying the warm waters. During lunch back at our hotel, we'll learn more about the history of Zanzibar. After that, everyone will enjoy a tour of a local spice farm. We will relax and enjoy a seafood dinner tonight. And if we are lucky, we will enjoy some traditional Arabian music provided by local musicians.

Day 11: Today our day will begin with a visit to the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, a forest preserve home to mahogany woods, the unique Zanzibar red colobus monkey, and mangroves. This hike will be followed by a trip to the butterfly center community ecotourism project, and hundreds of colorful flyers. After lunch we enjoy a historical tour of Stone Town and visit the slave caves. We then depart for the airport for our flight into Dar (included in the price of the trip). The flight typically leaves Zanzibar around 6:30 p.m. and arrives at the international terminal around 7:00 p.m. (do not make air reservations until times are confirmed by the trip leader). We will arrive in plenty of time to catch the KLM (or other airline) flight back to the U.S. We will have a simple dinner at the Dar airport. Unfortunately, this dream trip will come to an end. It will be sad to say goodbye to Africa, all the wonderful animals, and our new friends. You will be enticed to return again -- and soon!

Occasionally, changes may occur in the trip -- either in advance or during the trip. Please be aware that we will make every effort to follow this itinerary. However, if weather, equipment, construction, the National Park Service or any other condition, circumstance or situation causes a change, please be flexible and respect the decision of the leader. The safety and enjoyment of the entire group is our number one concern.

Getting There

The trip begins at the Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) in Arusha, Tanzania and ends in Dar es Salaam (DAR).  Julius Nyerere International Airport is the international airport of Dar es Salaam, and is the biggest airport in Tanzania and among the largest in East Africa.

You will need to make reservations into JRO and departing from DAR.  KLM is the airline that services this area the best, but other airline options exist.  Once you sign up for this fabulous safari adventure, the leader will provide more detailed information on tips and ideas for securing  your reservations .

It is the highest recommendation that you arrive at least a day early.  This will allow for any inconveniences to get resolved -- delayed flights, lost luggage, and recovery from jet lag.

There are three in-country flights provided in the cost of this trip:

  • The flight from the Central Serengeti to Arusha
  • The flight from Arusha to Zanzibar (ZNZ)
  • The flight from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (DAR)

The Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is the main airport in the Zanzibar Archipelago located on Unguja Island (more commonly known as Zanzibar).

Please do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until notified to do so by the trip leader.

Accommodations and Food

Accommodations will include safari lodges and a private luxury camps. Most of the lodges are among the finest that Tanzania has to offer but do not correspond to luxury class hotels in the more developed countries of the world.

Private luxury camps will be a fun African experience!  The tents will accommodate two persons each and will be plenty large, with beds, mattresses, bedding, towels and lamps. There is hot and cold running water in regular bathrooms with showers and flush toilets. The setting will be serene and quiet -- except for the sounds of occasional wildlife. The advantage of these camps is that they are set up in areas with the most wildlife activity. Plus, it is private.

All lodging is based on double occupancy for lodges and luxury tent.

Food is fresh, well prepared and tasty. Most of the dishes are Western or European-style, with some African meals included. Meals will be served at the table or will be buffet-style. Basic vegetarian diets can be accommodated. Please check with the leader regarding other dietary requirements.

Trip Difficulty

No special conditioning is required for this safari. We will ride in vehicles with a maximum of seven persons in each vehicle, each person having access to a window and roof hatch.  The game drives will be over uneven dirt roads with plenty of ruts and pot holes. Guests will need to hold on at times of rough road conditions. There will be the inevitable inconveniences and difficulties associated with travel in a developing country. It is important to accept Tanzania on its own terms, with a sense of adventure and good humor. On rare occasions the itinerary may need to change somewhat due to unforeseen circumstances. Snorkeling off Zanzibar starts from our boat into the open ocean and there is a guide with us. No previous snorkeling experience is required, but it is highly recommended.

Equipment and Clothing

A good camera with at least a 300 mm lens is ideal for photography. One can take some good photos with a smaller digital or other type of camera when animals are close to the vehicle but it will not be possible to take good quality pictures of birds and animals that are a longer distance away. Many animals in the parks are habituated to vehicles so do not shy away, therefore close photo opportunities are possible.

Good binoculars are a necessity. It is best for each person in a couple or family group to have a pair of their own. Dress is always informal. A clothing/equipment list will be sent to participants by the trip leader.

There are many good general guidebooks to Tanzania, Zanzibar, and East Africa. For example, one of Passport's Regional Guides of Africa, Tanzania, by Lisa Asch and Peter Blackwell, gives a very readable overview of this fascinating country. For more in-depth material and a better understanding of the safari experience, here are a few of the leader's recommendations:

  • Gallmann, Kuri, I dreamed of Africa.
  • Markham, Beryl, West with the Night.
  • Moss, Cynthia, Portraits in the Wild.
  • Bonner, Raymond, At the Hand of Man.
  • Brunner, John, Stand On Zanzibar. A Hugo Award winning novel.
  • Smith, Anthony, The Great Rift: Africa's Challenging Valley.
  • Saitoti, Tepilit Ole, and Carol Beckwith, Maasai.
  • Matthiessen, Peter, Sand Rivers.
  • Grzimek, Bernard and Michael, Serengeti Shall Not Die.
  • Hatch, John, Serengeti: A Profile.
  • Iwago, Mitsuaki, Serengeti: The Natural Order.
  • Matthiessen, Peter, The Tree Where Man Was Born.

Conservation

The Sierra Club is an environmentally focused entity. We are concerned about conservation and sustainability of resources both locally and globally. Our work is accomplished by volunteers and aided by a salaried staff, and encourages grassroots involvement. Our outings seek to empower participants toward environmentally understanding parallel concerns at home and abroad.

As of this writing, there is a proposal to build a road thought the Serengeti. It is feared this will interfere with the migration of animals.  It will also allow poachers greater accessibility to sensitive areas, hence more opportunity to devastate the remaining herds

Twenty-five percent of Tanzania's land (over 95,000 square miles) has been set aside for wildlife parks, reserves, and game areas. This is probably more than any other country on earth. However, Tanzania's economic resources for rangers, roads, research, and administration of these lands is meager, and illegal poaching and hunting still take their toll on wildlife. The integrity of national parks and wildlife reserves is also being threatened as the need for land and food increases.

There are many projects going on in Tanzania today to help solve these problems. Ngorongoro Crater is part of the extensive Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which is a pioneering effort in multi-purpose land, allowing for the protection of animals and the continuation of tribal lifestyles at the same time. Also, there are several animal research projects in the field, including the world's longest-running research project, the Serengeti Lion Project, which began in the l960s.

One of our conservation objectives will be to try to understand the challenges that Tanzania faces in continuing to support such a large national park system. Tourist dollars are a major source of revenue, so by coming to see these magnificent animals and their habitats, we are helping to ensure their future. That said, we will become aware of both the positive and negative consequences of tourism in a country like Tanzania.

Evacuation and Travel Insurance

The Sierra Club provides evacuation insurance to all participants on international trips. Since this coverage does not include any trip cancellation or interruption insurance, we suggest you purchase another policy separately to provide coverage for your trip and other travel costs. This policy also does not cover pre-trip and post-trip travel. Please note the evacuation insurance provided does not cover claims resulting from any pre-existing condition that occurs within 60 days of the trip departure. If you have specific questions about this exclusion, please review the  insurance brochure . For information on purchasing a separate policy, please see our  travel insurance page .

PAVEL DOBROVSKÝ

Jules Verne. Karel May. Není nic krásnějšího, než když vás takový člověk vezme a ukáže vám kousek svého světa.

Průvodkyně a delegátka

Jednotlivá místa v letadle jsou přidělována cestujícím leteckou společností a CK bohužel nemůže předem zaručit přidělení vámi preferovaného místa v letadle.

Postup má chránit cestující a předejít naložení výbušných látek do nákladního prostoru letadla. Její znalosti o obou zemích, její znalosti o fauně a floře nás velice ohromily. Dana Ciglerová – Safari v Tanzanii a exotický Zanzibar únor - březen 2023
