Car Rental in Cuba: The Complete Guide to Renting a Car in Cuba (2023)

Home to exotic beaches, legendary cigars, and fascinating culture and traditions , Cuba makes for quite a vacation destination. To visit all the fantastic places on the island, you probably thought about renting a car in Cuba… and you probably found that it’s not easy.

Most car rental companies in Cuba don’t have official websites. Information about renting a car is scattered. Fees are complicated and sometimes hidden. And there is no one you can call.

If you feel frustrated, you are not alone. Cuba is one of the most complicated countries in the world, and renting a car can be inexplicably arduous for new travelers.

Don’t be discouraged, though. This guide will explain absolutely everything you need to know about car rental in Cuba. What are the official car rental companies in Cuba? How can you rent a car in Cuba? How much does it cost? Are there fees and penalties? What about renting classic cars in Cuba?

We will answer all your burning questions.

Note: Prices are shown in USD for illustrative purposes. Remember that travelers are banned from using US dollars on the island.

Should Even You Rent a Car in Cuba?

Cubacar Car Rental Line of Customers

Most likely no, unless you plan a trip around the island.

Renting a car in Cuba will set you free. No doubt about it. You will be able to go where you want, when you want, including towns and beaches in Cuba that most travelers will never visit. This is a strong case for renting a car in Cuba, especially considering the flawed public transportation system anywhere on the island.

With that said, renting a Car in Cuba may not be a good idea if you just plan to visit a city or two. For example, if you plan to stay in Havana, enjoy the exciting things to do in Havan a, and even go on a day trip to Varadero, you may want to avoid the hassle of renting a car in Cuba.

Renting a car in Cuba is not cheap

The base rate per day of a basic model (economic type) is 49 USD, and the insurance is 20 USD per day. You will also incur extra charges for additional drivers, drop-off fees, and gas. On top of that, tipping in Cuba is also expected. If you rent a car during the high season, your trip to Cuba costs can go up quickly.

Therefore, renting a car is definitely not for budget-savvy visitors who want to go around Cuba on their own .

You will need to rent the car well in advance

Honest advice? Do not wait to be in Cuba to rent a car. The car inventory is always limited, and fleet management is inefficient. This worsens during peak season in Cuba (November through February).

Therefore, at least three months in advance, head to online travel agencies like Holiplus to rent your car in Cuba.

Choices are limited (and don’t expect a classic car)

The car fleet of all car rental companies in Cuba is limited to a few Asian and European brands. The most common rental cars in Cuba are Kia, Hyundai, Renault, Peugeot, Geely, and Emgrand. In the luxury category, if you are lucky, you can rent Mercedes Benz, Audi, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Gac, Morris Garage, and Maxus.

You also need to consider that, in the end, you might not even get the car you wanted. It’s not uncommon in Cuba to drive off the car rental office in a vehicle that it’s not the one you booked. There are many reasons for this, and we won’t get into that, but just keep in mind it could happen.

One interesting fact about Cuba is that you can’t rent classic cars through any state car rental company. To rent some of those fancy classic cars you see in travel magazines, you must go with foreign travel agencies. We dedicated an entire section to renting a classic car in Cuba further below.

The whole thing can be exhausting

The process of renting a car can be bureaucratic and exhausting. You can find hundreds of travelers’ testimonials about excruciating waiting times, long lines, poor service, and vehicles delivered in terrible conditions.

On top of that, it’s rare to find an agent proficient enough in English, let alone in other languages. Perhaps, this is a good “opportunity” to practice your Spanish language skills, so check out this Cuban Spanish Phrasebook .

Driving in Cuba is not exactly safe

Although Cuba is a safe country to visit , driving alone can be dangerous. Most roads and highways in Cuba are in terrible condition, traffic signs are a luxury, hitchhikers are everywhere, people sell food on the street, and you can even encounter animals on the road.

That’s why you must be extra careful while driving in Cuba. Drive under speed limits (60 mph on highways, 37 mph on rural roads, and 24-31 mph within the city). Also, avoid driving at night since fatigue, low-light conditions, and lack of road signs can increase the risks of an accident.

If unfortunately, you get involved in an accident, there is a chance you may be banned from leaving the country until the authorities complete the investigation.

Gas stations are old and scattered

There are just a few old gas stations on highways and in towns. Therefore, filling the gas tank before leaving town is a good idea.

Gas shortages are not uncommon either. If you happen to go during one of these unfortunate events, be ready to stand in line for hours.

GPS is not an option

Rental cars don´t have GPS systems incorporated, so you´ll have to travel old-fashioned with a street map of Cuba . Alternatively, apps like Google Maps or Maps.me allow you to use street maps without internet access in Cuba .

You can’t pay in cash

At rental offices in Cuba, all payments must be made with a credit or debit card. Remember that transactions in USD are not accepted, and credit/debit cards issued by American banks are useless.

For more about how to use money on the island, read our guide to the Cuban currency .

Parking can be a problem

You shouldn’t leave the rental car unsupervised in Cuba. Insurance does not cover tires, and they are easy to steal. Someone will watch your rental car for a buck or two. Look for guys wearing red vests as uniforms near parking sites; they will watch your car day or night.

Car Rental Companies in Cuba

Car Rental Company in Cuba

The four major car rental companies in Cuba are state-owned. They are Havanautos, Cubacar, Rex, and Via Rent A Car.

Havanautos, Cubacar, and Rex are branch offices of Grupo Transtur S.A ., the largest tourist transportation company in Cuba. On the other hand, Via Rent a Car belongs to TransGaviota, a car rental company associated with the Cuban military.

You must first know that these companies don’t offer online booking services. In fact, many don’t even have a website. Given this situation, several travel agencies took over domains similar to the names of the major car rental companies in Cuba. Some of these travel agencies are legit, and some have a questionable reputation .

In this article, we try to provide the official websites of the rental companies in Cuba, if available.

Havanautos Car Rental

Founded in 1982, Havanautos is the oldest and has the largest car fleet in Cuba. Due to the high number of offices across the country (more than 70), you can find 24/7 assistance almost everywhere on the island. It offers different categories, including Economy, Economy Plus, Medium, Medium Plus, Premium, SUV, Van, and Minivan. The most popular rental cars are the MG3, Renault Sandero, Hyundai Grand I10, and Geely GC6.

Cubacar is also one of the oldest car rental companies in Cuba. It offers mainly the same categories as Havanautos: Economy, Economy Plus, Medium, Medium Plus, Premium, SUV, Van, and Minivan. But there is a catch, most of their models have a manual transmission, so if you don´t feel confident driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, you should check other options. Peugeot 207, MG3, Geely GC6, and Geely CK are the most popular models.

Rex Car Rental

Rex offers exclusive car rental services in Cuba. Their guidelines promise to provide high-standard transportation whether you are traveling for business or leisure. Rex has offices in nine of the main tourist cities in the country, but its largest fleet is available in Havana. They offer iconic models such as Mercedes Benz B180, Mercedes Benz C200, Mercedes Benz E200, Hyundai Sonata, and Renault Talisman.

Via Rent A Car

Via Rent A Car is a subdivision of TransGaviota, a major tourist company in Cuba associated with the Cuban military. Their offices are spread throughout the country, especially near other TransGaviota facilities. Their top service is Flexi, Fly, and Drive, offering tourists the possibility to design their vacation without a fixed itinerary.

If you are traveling to Cuba from the US , you should avoid renting a car from Via Rent A Car since Gaviota is one of the companies banned by the US Government.

How to Rent a Car in Cuba

Renting a Car in Cuba

There are two options when it comes to car rental in Cuba: online, and in-person.

Go online (recommended)

We previously mentioned possible online scams, but established travel agencies also offer booking services. They have contracts with Cuban companies and safe payment gateways. Remember that, during the peak season, the car displayed online might not be available. However, they will often work it out with you to find a similar car.

We recommend sticking to recognized travel agencies such as Holiplus .

Some of these reputable online travel agencies also have offices in Cuba, which can be very helpful along the way.

Book it in person (it’s a long shot)

Technically, you can just head to the office of Cubacar, Havautos, or Via in the airport, once you land in Cuba. However, availability is not guaranteed, and the long lines can be excruciating.

To improve your odds of renting a car in Cuba, first settle in your “casa particular”, Airbnb , or hotel. Next, find the nearest office of any Cuban car rental company.

Keep in mind that renting a car in Cuba in person is a long shot.

How to Rent a Classic Car in Cuba

Classic car tour Havana Cuba

Looking for a nice classic convertible instead?

Well, the very first thing you must know is that state-owned car rental companies won’t rent you classic cars. Classic cars are privately owned, and owners don’t have contracts with state companies.

Dreaming of driving a classic car around Havana all by yourself? That’s unlikely to happen. Classic cars are available to rent for transfers, city tours, or day trips. However, you might get lucky and find a private provider who is willing to let you drive one of those “almendrones”, how they also classic cars in Cuba.

Don’t worry, though. You can still see the wonderful Havana from the backseat of a classic car. Check out our available classic car tours and pick the one you like. It’s that simple.

Alternatively, you can find classic car drivers parked outside hotels and near major tourist attractions. For example, if you are in Havana, head to El Capitolio where you will find a line of classic cars willing to drive anywhere you want. Feel free to bargain with the drivers since their first quote is likely unrealistically high.

You can expect to pay 20-50 USD/hour, depending on the city you are in, the car condition, how many people are taking the tour, and the season. Day trips to other cities usually have fixed prices. For example, a day trip to Varadero can cost you around 300 USD.

Finally, don’t forget that classic cars in Cuba are not in optimal condition and do not comply with most car safety regulations you find elsewhere. For example, don’t expect seatbelts, airbags, or an anti-lock braking system.

How to Rent a Scooter in Cuba

cuba travel network rent a car

Renting a scooter in Cuba is a bit complicated. You will have to do it in person, and there is only one place in Havana where you can do it. The address is Avenida Paseo y Calle 3ra, Vedado.

There are more places in Varadero, specifically Cubacar offices, where you can rent scooters. You can find these offices or booths near your hotel or downtown Varadero.

Renting a scooter in Cuba is also way cheaper than renting a car. However, choices are also limited. There is only one model available, the scooter type, which is unsuitable for long distances. The price for renting a scooter is 25-35 USD per day if you rent it for more than 24 hours and less than a month. Prices are 10-15 USD per hour if you rent the scooter for less than 24 hours. There is also a security deposit of 50 USD.

As with modern car rentals, you won’t be able to pay in cash, and US-issued credit cards won’t work. Also, you are required to bring in your driver’s license and passport. Oh, and you have to be 21 years old or older.

We rented a car in Cuba many years ago. The car was from memory a small Scoda. I was a little concerned at this but it was the only car available at the time. Well we did many KMs in it. Maria la Gorda and then many Kms around Cuba without a hitch. I don’t remember the name of the company however it was quite complicated to arrange it at the time. We live in Australia and I needed to arrange it through a company in Canada. I can’t remember all the details. However it worked out OK. When I arrived in Havana I went to the Office to check and they said yes they had the car for me and it would be ready on the day we required it. They then asked me do I have any special requirements. I said I don’t want a radio and I wish to have the hubcaps on the wheels removed (Because of possible stealing). This was all done and we had the car for about 3 weeks and traveled extensively around Cuba Without a problem. Some of the roads were quite challenging.

But I must say that it was a fantastic trip

Thanks for sharing your experience, Bill!

Thanks for the useful article! A comment: “credit cards issued my American banks are not currently accepted in Cuba” sounds misleading, like Cuba refuses to deal with American banks when it is the other way around: America bans its banks from doing business in Cuba so American issued bank cards don’t work there. Cheers!

Seriously reading your article about renting a car in Cuba is very off-putting and does not appeal that it can be fun and you can visit amazing places! I have been with a car around the island and it is not dangerous! And you can get petrol! And if anyone reads this I bet nobody wants to go to Cuba for sure! SO were are all the positives? I rather go to Mexico after reading this all..

May you send me an e-mail? I was very offput as well and considered not going – I am interested in exploring the island and would love to hear about your positive experience! [email protected]

Cuba Travel Network went bankrupt now already 2 times, first two BV,s now the NV at Curacoa, so please modify your article. CTN has caused a lot of suffering to travelers, transferring their money to tax free countries and leave customers without a rental car!!!!!! Curators can not find any funds. That you still recommend them is not too good for this article…

The 2024 Guide to Car Rental in Cuba

Buses are often full, or the online booking system on Viazul doesn’t work all the time.   Private transfers are expensive.  You don’t want to squish into an uncomfortable colectivo.   There are all sorts of reasons why you might look at car rentals in Cuba.  After all, no doubt when you go on vacation to other parts of the world it’s a cinch to rent a car, despite, perhaps needing a little extra paperwork and insurance.  Cuba, however, is different.  In lots of ways.    Here’s all you need to know about renting a car in Cuba.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS. MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

How do you get around Cuba?

The vast majority of independent visitors to Cuba use one of three methods of Cuban Transport to get around Cuba.  The Viazul Bus (our guide is here ), private transfers, or colectivos.  Colectivos are primarily shared taxis.  However, in planning an itinerary around Cuba it’s easy to get frustrated with Viazul Buses that only go to the airports once a day (and usually nowhere near the time when a flight lands or takes off).  Or transfers that seem inordinately expensive, for what, at home, would be a two-hour ride.

Transport in Cuba is very different from what we’re all used to at home.  Roads aren’t in as good a condition.  Livestock often roams wild, making driving at night somewhat more dangerous and difficult than in other parts of the world.   There are a whole lot of reasons why transport here in Cuba is very different.

And so, the option of renting a car comes up.

Should you rent a car in Cuba in 2024?

TLDR:  I wouldn’t. (And I started my working life as a taxi driver the day I passed my drivers test) but here’s what you need to consider when renting a car in Cuba.

  • Fuel – i.e. gas (petrol) and diesel are much more expensive for private individuals than they are for licensed transport operators, buses, and government vehicles. Prices for fuel has gone up in March 2024
  • Depending on when you are traveling there may be fuel shortages, which often lead to rationing of fuel.
  • Insurance is a major requirement
  • Car Renters must be at least 21 years old and have had a license for at least 3 years.
  • Booking a car can be time-consuming, frustrating, and sometimes nigh-on impossible
  • You’ll need to have a reasonable level of Spanish to organize a rental car in Cuba – you are unlikely to find many fluent English speakers in this sector.
  • The minimum rental period for cars in Cuba is THREE days.
  • If you have an accident in Cuba, then you will NOT be leaving the country until any claims are resolved (read on for more about this)

But, the freedom and independence, well that’s pretty awesome!

Reader Reports on Fuel for Rental Cars in Cuba in 2024

February 2024: 66% of the gas stations that I went to had no fuel and I had to find alternatives., buying fuel is sometimes complex (the process that you have to follow – in terms of buying scratch cards, and getting authorisation that you’re allowed to buy fuel). You need to have your rental car agreement with you to get fuel.

January 2024: I was only able to get 20 liters of fuel at a time. It meant I had to return the next day to get another 20 liters. Black market fuel is about 10 times the cost of the fuel at the pump. You buy at the pump with a scratch card, which you have to purchase usually before you get to the pump (sometimes from nowhere near the pump). Scratch cards are availabe in denominations of 50, 100, 250 and 500 pesos. If you hand over a 500 peso scratch card for 400 pesos of fuel you probably WON’T get change.

Why Rent A Car in Cuba?

Renting a car in Cuba gives you the same type of freedom that it does anywhere else.  Hiring a car in Cuba gives you the flexibility of schedule and the ability to get more off the beaten track.  Using rental cars in Cuba also means that you can travel outside the schedules of the Viazul Bus and the train service.

Renting a Car in Cuba – The Details

In Cuba, it’s not as simple as jumping online finding the best deal for a hire car, and booking it.  It’s somewhat more complex.  So here’s what you need to know about car rental in Cuba.

How far in advance should you book a rental car in Cuba?

If you wait until you get to Cuba to try and get a rental car you’ll likely just waste several days of your vacation.  There is a very limited inventory of Cuban rental cars.   Like many things in Cuba, it’s inefficient, compared to what you’re used to.  You’ll need to start looking at least 90 days (3 months) in advance.  If you find a car, book it.  Don’t shop around.  You won’t find a better deal.  Trust me.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Cuba?

There isn’t the same competition between rental car companies in Cuba that there is in a lot of the rest of the world.  (You won’t find Hertz and Alamo here).    The basic rate of renting a car in Cuba is US$49 a day.  On top of that cost, you’ll pay insurance of between US$20 and US$40 a day.  An annual insurance policy for rental cars is extremely unlikely to be valid in Cuba.  Then there are extra costs for additional drivers, gas, and drop-off fees.  You’ll also be expected to tip.  (I know, what? Stay with me).

Paying deposits for rental cars in Cuba

When you collect your rental car (and before you drive it away), you will also need to pay

  • A security deposit (usually between US$150-US$250)
  • For a full tank of gas
  • Car insurance
  • For any additional drivers (US$3-US$5 per additional driver, with a max of two additional drivers)

Renting a car in Cuba is NOT a budget option for travel.

Be aware of potential penalties when renting cars in Cuba

You should also be aware of penalties that might be levied on you when renting a car in Cuba.

  • If you return the car in a dirty state:  US$50
  • If you transport animals in the car:  US$50
  • If you lock the keys in the car:  US$100
  • If you lose the car keys:  US$200

Things to be aware of when renting a car in Cuba

  • You should never leave your Cuban rental car unsupervised.  Always pay someone – it just needs to be a few dollars – to look after it.  Or park somewhere where there’s an official parking attendant.
  • Tires are NOT covered on Cuban rental car insurance.  And they’re easy to steal and easy to sell.
  • Rental cars in Cuba do not have GPS fitted.  If you haven’t bought a Cuban SIM card ( read how to here ), or if your cellphone service doesn’t allow roaming in Cuba, then you’ll need to download maps before setting off (use downloadable Google Maps, or maps.me) or go real old school and buy a paper map of Cuba.
  • Cuban Rental cars are marked with a “T” on them.  This makes you very visible.  Don’t leave any valuables on show in the vehicle.  Make sure it’s never parked in an unattended spot.
  • Fuel shortages are common and service stations are few and far between especially when you leave the major tourist center.  Fill your tank whenever you can.

Safety Issues when renting cars in Cuba

Reports from tourists include that there have been attacks on foreign visitors in hire cars, with being deliberately punctured. The best advice if this happens to you in a remote area, is to drive to a town before stopping. It’s also not recommended to pick up hitch-hikers.

Fuel Shortages in Cuba

Fuel shortages continue to be an issue in Cuba. Our guide here , stays up to date with the situation. You should consider what your route is and plan for your travel and fuel requirements. Just because you can find fuel in Havana does not mean it will be available all the way across the island.

What documentation do you need to rent a car in Cuba?

To rent a car in Cuba you will need a valid driver’s license.   You can drive a car in Cuba on your driver’s license for up to six months without having to swap it for a Cuban license.   You don’t need an International driver’s Permit.

International Drivers Permits can only be issued from your home country before you depart.

You’ll need your passport and also a credit card that will work in Cuba.  You must also be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Cuba. You just have also had your license for more than 2 years.

How to pay for a rental car in Cuba

You can’t pay cash for a rental car in Cuba.  You must pay with a credit or debit card.  And that credit or debit card CANNOT be from a US bank and the transaction cannot be made in US dollars either.

What type of car can you rent in Cuba?

The types of cars that are available to rent in Cuba are primarily Asian and European brands.  You’ve unlikely to have much choice.  It may also be that the car you reserve is not the car you end up renting.

And.  Sorry folks.  No, you can’t rent a classic car in Cuba.  You can rent a classic car and driver, but not the car to take away on your own.    Classic cars in Cuba are old.  They’re more than 60 years old in many cases, they’ve been nursed through years, painstakingly put back together and restored, but they have 60-year-old technology.  They rarely have seatbelts and don’t have airbags.

If you want to take a ride in a classic car, then rent yourself a car and driver for a specific route – like the Malecon in Havana or a short tour.  ( here are some options ).

Picking up your rental car

Make sure you fully inspect your rental car before you leave the rental location, document any damage to the car, and make sure this is registered with the rental company.  You are likely to find that the maintenance of rental cars in Cuba isn’t quite what you’re used to.

Can you get baby seats for rental cars in Cuba

Possibly. But probably not. It’s always best with Cuba to take things like this with you and not to rely on it being available in Cuba.

Returning your rental car

When you return your rental car, check it fully, with the rental agent if you can, to confirm that there is no damage that you’ve caused.

Special Rules on Car Rental if you are American

If you’re American, then you should avoid renting a car from an organization that benefits the Cuban Military.   It’s illegal for Americans to spend money with the commercial part of the Cuban military.  Here’s a full list of military-run businesses.

Car Rental Companies in Cuba

There are four major car rental companies in Cuba.  They’re all state-owned.  These Cuban rental car companies are

  • Via Renta Car

Via Renta Car is owned by Transgaviota, which is associated with the Cuban Military.  (US Citizens should NOT use this company).  The other three companies are branches of the largest tourist transportation company in Cuba, Grupo Transtur S.A.

None of these companies have an online presence that allows you to book online.

Where to Rent a Car in Cuba

There are other options for renting a car in Cuba.  These organizations have commercial relationships with major rental companies and are (sometimes) able to provide online booking and reservations.  But.  Remember, this is Cuba.  You’ll like need some (aka a lot of) patience.

TUI Car Rental In Cuba

TUI Car Rental is part of the main TUI holiday brand.  Renting a car from TUI cars means that you’ll get

  • Top Insurance with fully comprehensive cover
  • Liability Insurance
  • Free Cancellation & Amendment
  • Customer-friendly fuel arrangements
  • Second driver free of charge

You can request a quote and reservation from TUI Cars in Cuba here

Holiplus Car Rental in Cuba

Holiplus offers car rentals, holidays, and accommodation in Cuba and other Caribbean destinations.

You can request a quote and reservation from Holiplus in Cuba here.

Renting a car in Cuba privately

You may find, if you ask around, Cubans renting cars privately.  Or, if you look on revolico.com   – a classified ads site – you could find cars for rent there.  You should be very wary of this, as the car rental is likely to be illegal.

Driving in Cuba

There is very little private car ownership in Cuba and there is little other road traffic in Cuba, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything else on the road.

While you drive on the right in Cuba, if there is an overtaking lane you’ll find that many drivers in Cuba remain in the overtaking lane, as you’ll find pedestrians, cyclists, and slow-moving vehicles, sometimes pulled by animals in the right-hand lane.

What to expect on the roads in Cuba

Many of the roads, both in and outside of towns and cities, in Cuba are NOT in good condition.  Heading down the island towards Santiago de Cuba , Baracoa , and Guantanamo, you’ll find quite a lot of unpaved roads too.

Railway lines often cross the roads in Cuba too.  There aren’t that many trains, but there are few if any barriers.  It goes without saying that if there’s a train, the train has the right of way.

There aren’t many traffic signs on Cuba roads.  There are lots of loose animals around, especially once you get out of the towns.  Add to that there are hitchhikers – mostly Cubanos looking to get between places – and street vendors.

Be aware that there may be potholes on the other side of the road as well, which means that traffic coming towards you may be on your side of the road!

You’ll definitely need your wits about you.

Don’t drive at night.  It’s not worth it.

The Cuban Government issued the following statistics for traffic accidents between January 2023 and October 2023: There were 6,965 traffic accidents. They resulted in 562 deaths and 5,643 injuries.

Speed Limits on Roads in Cuba

Cuban speed limits on roads differ by the road.

  • In the city, the Cuban speed limit is 24-31 mph
  • On rural roads in Cuba, the speed limit is 37 mph
  • On highways in Cuba, the speed limit is 60 mph

The signs designating the speed limits may be missing, or might never have been erected.  Be aware.  It’s not uncommon to find one of the traffic police waiting.  You’ll be fined if you’re speeding.  Make sure you have all your documentation with you.

Gas for your rental car

It’s no secret that there have been fuel shortages in Cuba in recent years.  There are often limits to how much gas you can buy at once.  Once you get out of the main towns and cities gas stations are in short supply.  If there are shortages during your visit then you’ll have to join the line like everyone else.

You might think that gas is cheaper in Cuba than it is at home, and it likely is, but the primary issue is supply. If a gas station is dry then the fact that this is 20% cheaper than at home is irrelevant. Reports in early 2024 are that prices are going up for foreign drivers when it comes to gas.

You can read reports about gas price changes here.

You will need to pay for gas either by credit or debit card or with Cuban pesos.  You’ll need to check at each gas station if they are accepting credit/debit cards.  Foreign currency will NOT be accepted at gas stations for fuel. You can read our guide to Cuban Currency here.

You can also buy prepaid fuel cards (with your credit or debit card) to the value of 25, 75, 125, 500, and 1250 pesos.   These prepaid Cuban fuel cards are single-use.  So if you buy a 75 peso fuel card you need to buy 75 pesos of fuel.

Fuel in Cuba will also cost you more than the official transport providers and Viazul Buses. That’s because official transport providers – like Viazul Bus and the licensed taxi drivers and transfer companies get a special rate. You do not.

It’s ok to pick up hitch-hikers in Cuba

Actually, it’s the norm.    The Cuban word for hitchhiking is “Botella”.  In Cuba is safe to pick up hitchhikers and it’s a recognized way of traveling especially between cities.  You’ll likely pick up some great tips and learn a lot about the country if you pick up hitchhikers.

You should, however, also be careful. You don’t know them, as they don’t know you. Make sure your valuables are stored securely.

What happens if you have a traffic accident in Cuba?

If you have a traffic accident in Cuba you must inform the rental car company and the authorities.  You must not leave the scene of the accident until both the authorities and the reps from the rental car company arrive.

Even the US embassy advises that if you’re involved in a traffic accident in Cuba you may be banned from leaving the country until all claims have been investigated and settled.

It can take up to 6 months for the court case to take place.  And no, you cannot leave until it has been resolved.  If you are found to be responsible for an accident that causes serious injury or death you can be sentenced to a prison term of up to ten years.

What credit card can I use to pay for a car rental?

You’ll need to ask each company, as they have different rules, but not a card issued by a US bank. Visa and Mastercard are generally accepted.

Planning to travel to Cuba?

Rent a car.

If you're planning a trip to Cuba and want a truly authentic experience, you'll likely be wondering about how best to travel around. A common question for many tourists and visitors is - can I rent a car in Cuba ? The answer is: Yes!

You can reduce the stress of car rental in Cuba by booking before your arrival. We recommend you book your car reservation through our agency to enjoy a hassle-free experience at affordable prices.

We have extensive experience providing car rental services in Cuba, and tourists and visitors always leave happy with our transport solutions.

Take our Special Offers!

When you rent a car in Cuba , you can enjoy the country's beautiful landscapes and soak up the delightful Caribbean weather. Travel through the streets and avenues, embrace the island's lush nature and explore beaches, historical sites of interest, shops and other destinations.

Driving recommendations in Cuba:

  • Cubans take a relaxed approach to driving, something you'll notice when you take to the country's roads. We recommend that you follow this slower driving style and take it easy.
  • While there is public transport in Cuba, it is minimal. You'll likely find travelling around Cuba on public transport tricky and uncomfortable. That's why we'd recommend car rental in Cuba, so you can move around easily and explore endless rural routes that would be impossible to reach on public transport.

How do you rent a car in Cuba?

You will only find a few car rental agencies in Cuba. If it is your first time travelling as a tourist or visitor, and you plan to rent a car, you need to be aware that some issues can arise. If you live in Australia, the United States or Europe, you will notice that car rental in Cuba is different to your country of origin. Many tourists and visitors arriving in Cuba expect to find an array of car rental agencies, as well as offices in many locations, but this is not the case, so you should take the following points into account:

Booking time

It is crucial to book your car rental reservation in advance when planning your trip to Cub. We recommend making your reservation two or three months before your trip. Try to avoid waiting until the last minute to search for an agency because there are very few of them, which can result in a lack of availability of cars. If you don't book your car in time, this can mean relying on public transportation or taxis throughout your stay.

Experienced agencies

When you rent a car in Cuba , it is essential to do so from an agency that offers security and quality service - so you can guarantee the right car for your needs.

Car variety

You should bear in mind that you may find a different range of brands and models than those on offer from other car rental agencies in different countries. For the best choice of models, it's a good idea to contact the agency in advance to see which ones are available.

The types of cars you can find

You will find various familiar car brands, such as Audi, Mercedes, Peugeot, Renault, Kia, and Hyundai. But, for your peace of mind, we recommend contacting the agency in advance to ensure you're fully informed of their car models and sizes.

Types of car transmissions

If you can drive a manual car, we offer a wide variety of models with this feature. If you prefer an automatic car, it is possible to find one, but this is more difficult. That's why it is essential to reserve your automatic car rental in advance to avoid disappointment.

Documentation

Please always keep your identification documents with you - do not leave them in your suitcase. It is essential to carry your passport when travelling by road. You may be requested to show your passport at toll gates and bridges that lead to popular beaches.

When parking at any destination you are visiting, it is essential to have cash on hand for any car parking fees. Don't worry, this service is relatively.

Car rental regulation

Please do not try to negotiate with a local to rent a car. Car rental in Cuba is regulated and it is illegal to rent cars from Cuban residents. There is only a small list of authorised and recognised agencies permitted to offer this service.

Routes and guides:

If you have already scheduled your trip to Cuba and decided to rent a car, you should consider the following tips if you are a first-time visitor: First, you should choose the sites you'd like to visit in advance, such as historic spots, streets, squares, and beaches; Second, consider the most comfortable routes to reach your destination; Third, plan how much fuel you will need for the duration of the trip.

If you are going to use a GPS to guide you on the road, please be aware that data connection may fail in Cuba. There is also no guarantee that your car will have an integrated GPS. We recommend asking the locals to ensure you don't get lost and, if necessary, carry printed maps with notes on routes and landmarks.

Pay attention to the fuel gauge, and always remember to fill the tank. It's crucial you don't leave it until the last minute, as in Cuba, you can't find a petrol station on every corner. Also, make sure you have Cuban pesos (the national currency: CUP) with you because that's the only way to pay for fuel. Rental cars must only be filled with their specific type of petrol.

Enjoy your Cuba Car Rental!

You may find renting a car in Cuba more challenging than in other countries worldwide. Tourists and visitors find it easier to get off the plane and then look for a rental car agency upon arrival in their destination country. Therefore, it is important to consult the experts who can provide all the information you need about the car rental services available to ensure a smooth arrival without setbacks. Some recommendations when arriving in Cuba and looking for your rental car:

You can pick up the car at José Martí International Airport (HAV), which is the most practical solution. If you fly to Playa Baracoa Airport (UPB), you can also find a rental car service.

When booking your car rental in Cuba , ensure you ask where the car pick-up locations are within your arrival terminal.

Car rental offices located at the airport usually have a greater variety of cars than other branches. If you opt to pick up your car from the airport, you will also avoid paying for a transfer to your hotel.

Make sure your arrival in Cuba coordinates with your chosen car rental customer service opening hours.

Tourists and visitors should keep in mind that car rental in Cuba is in high demand. At Rental Car Cuba, we are car rental experts. As an agency, we have helped many visitors enjoy a pleasant and effortless car rental experience in Cuba. Avoid complications or setbacks when collecting your car by booking Rentalcarcuba rental car in advance through our agency today. We've helped many travellers enjoy a positive car rental experiences so you can rest assured you'll be in good hands.

You're Going to Cuba!

Get your wheels.

If you're headed to Cuba, there's one big question on your mind about cruising the island. Can tourists and visitors get rental cars in Cuba? Absolutely! However, visitors can cut down on hassles related to renting cars in Cuba simply by taking care of reservations before arrival. When you book with us, you'll enjoy a hassle-free experience with straightforward pricing! We're the reliable Cuba rent car company that Caribbean-bound travelers trust!

Having your own rental car in Cuba.

That's why it's amazing.

Offering a Caribbean climate, Cuba is a fantastic place for rolling down the windows while zipping down boulevards lined with tropical trees! There's simply no better way to explore more beaches, town squares, shopping destinations and historical attractions than by renting your own car in Cuba. Here are the top things to know about driving around Cuba:

  • The pace is slow here! Driving like the Cubans drive means taking it slow and easy! You'll never feel like the locals are rushing you as you cruise down your lane.
  • While Cuba does provide public transportation, it can be limited. Seasoned visitors will tell you that having your own car gives you more opportunities to do what you please.
  • When you have a car, you'll definitely be stopping to take advantage of the many farm stands that are peppered on the roadsides of Cuba. How does some refreshing tropical fruit in the middle of the afternoon sound?
  • There are many beautiful country roads to be enjoyed in Cuba that you simply won't see if you're relying on public transportation.

While renting a car in Cuba is the preferred choice for many, travelers booking their Cuba rental cars for the first time may run into some surprises. If you're from the United States, Europe or Australia, you'll find that renting a car in Cuba is much different than renting a car for a vacation back home. Even people who have rented cars during vacations in other parts of the Caribbean are surprised to find out that Cuban car rentals are handled very differently. When you travel to other parts of the world, you expect to find rows and rows of rental car companies located right at the airport. In addition, you can find rental agencies in practically every town and city around the world. It doesn't work this way in Cuba.

Renting a Car in Cuba

What you need to know about it.

Cuba car rental companies are limited. Don't expect to be able to snag a rental car like lightning for your holiday after arriving in Cuba! In fact, deciding to wait until you get to Cuba to worry about renting a car essentially guarantees that you'll be using taxis or bus routes for the duration of your trip. The best suggestion is to diligently book online several weeks or months before your trip date. Aim to rent a car in Cuba at least two months before your departure if possible. However, it's not too late to check for car availability online right now if your departure date is just around the corner.

Help From Experts Will Get You on the Right Path

There are also some crucial details that tourists need to know when booking rental cars for travel in Cuba. That's why booking with a trusted, knowledgeable Cuba car rental company like YOUR CUBA is essential! The good news is that renting a car with assistance from the experts will help you enjoy a smooth journey that ensures your car is there when you need it!

Be Open to Different Rental Car Options

The Cuban car rental industry is so different from what you get in the United States. While most rental agencies in North America may give you a long list of cars to choose from, you shouldn't necessarily expect the same when you rent a vehicle for a vacation in Cuba. Be prepared for the fact that you may not get your first choice when it comes to the brand or model of car you want. However, the best way to get around this problem is to book your car as far in advance as possible.

There's Good News About the Cars You'll Find in Cuba

Visitors are likely to find many high-end and luxury car brands like Audi, Mercedes, Renault and Volkswagen. It's nice to have the familiar comfort and safety of these brand names as you explore a new country. In addition, everyday car brands like Kia and Hyundai are also very common among Cuban car rentals. The general rule is that people who request larger car models tend to get what they want because there's less demand for larger cars. Keep that in mind if you'd like to make sure the car you request during your reservation is the car you get the keys to when you show up in Cuba!

Can You Drive Manual Transmission? You'll Love Driving in Cuba!

Anyone who has traveled to foreign countries knows that most of the world drives cars with manual transmissions. It's the same story in Cuba! Yes, most rental cars available in Cuba do have manual operation. However, that doesn't mean you can't rent a car in Cuba if you only know how to drive a car with automatic transmission. It is possible to rent automatic cars in Cuba. However, anyone insecure about driving a car with manual transmission needs to focus on booking a rental as far out from their arrival date as possible. It might be nearly impossible to get an automatic car rental in Cuba if you wait until the last minute.

Keep Your Identification With You at All Times

Don't leave your passport in the hotel room! In Cuba, your passport can be essential while you're traveling along roads. Some areas require you to show your passport when paying tolls. This is common when crossing bridges that lead to some of the country's most magnificent beaches.

Bring Cash When You Drive

Have a little petty cash on you whenever you're driving around. Many places charge for parking. While parking doesn't cost a lot, you will need to have some money on you to be able to keep your car somewhere.

What Visitors Should Know About Getting Rental Cars in Cuba

Think you know all there is to know about road trips? There's a lot to learn if this is the first time you'll be trekking through Cuba! Take a look at the essentials that will make your road adventures fun and safe!

Don't Try to Get a "Good Deal" by Paying a Local for a Car Rental

If you were thinking of renting a car directly from someone in Cuba, you'll need to reconsider your plan. Car rentals are highly regulated in Cuba. In fact, outsiders have to choose from a small list of recognized car companies when booking their rentals. It's illegal for Cuban residents to rent out their vehicles.

Don't Rely on GPS to Get Everywhere

First, you shouldn't necessarily rely on GPS or data to find your way to where you're going. Data connections are infamously spotty in Cuba. What's more, there's no guarantee that your rental car will have a built-in GPS. Pack some paper road maps in your travel bag for Cuba to ensure that country roads never make you panic!

Never Skip an Opportunity to Fill the Tank

It's also important to know that there's not necessarily a gas station waiting on every corner in Cuba. There's a very easy way to make sure you never run out of gas in your rental car. Simply make a habit of filling up your tank completely whenever you're in a highly-populated spot with available gas stations. You should even consider topping off your gas tank at every opportunity to ensure you don't end up with an empty tank when you're far from any commercial areas.

Trip Planning 101

Zipping from your flight to your rental car in cuba.

While renting a car in Cuba isn't quite as simple as renting a car in other parts of the world, travelers can still have a very easy time making the transition from their flights to their car rentals upon arrival in the country. It just takes a little planning with help from rental experts to ensure that your arrival goes off without a hitch! Here are the tips for picking up a rental car in Cuba:

While picking up a rental car at Jose Marti International (HAV) is most accessible, you can certainly still arrange for a rental car if you're flying into Playa Baracoa Airport (UPB).

When making car arrangements, inquire about pickup locations at your arrival terminal.

A tip to know is that airport rental locations tend to have better selections than other rental locations! Aim for an airport pickup option! This will also save you the hassle of paying for transportation to your hotel.

Make sure your arrival coincides with the hours of operation of the rental pickup spot you select!

Travelers should know that demand is always high for rental cars in Cuba. Give yourself the gift of a predictable pickup experience by booking YOUR CUBA CAR rental as soon as possible if you're planning an upcoming Cuba trip. Get started by booking your rental with us today! We've helped countless visitors to Cuba enjoy effortless car reservations. It only takes a few minutes to secure a rental for your travel dates.

Rent a car in cuba: why.

If you want the freedom to explore the island, you will want to rent a car in Cuba. You may want to rent a car in Havana to get started with your journey. There are three Cuba Car Rental companies in existence today. They are Rex, Cuba Car and Havanautos. They are all run by federal government, however. They do have websites, which are not very user-friendly. Prices are set due to a state monopoly. Available cars for rent are few and scattered all over Cuba. What to do then? As a result, the process to rent a car in Cuba used to be time consuming and complicated. For these reason Cubacenter developed a powerful and intuitive search engine that gives you access to the best options for each category across different state-owned car rental agencies. This makes the booking process significantly less frustrating and way faster. Their FAQs will answer your most pressing questions.

Simply enter your dates, drop off and pick up times, and location, and then filter as much or as little as needed depending on your preferences. Available cars and prices will pop up. You can filter down to type of car and company, with dozens of choices. Read this before you head off with your rental car. Once you have placed your preferences, you will receive your booking confirmation. In 48 hours you will be informed whether or not your requested car is available. If your car is confirmed you will receive another email with a voucher and final reservation. If they are unable to find the car you want, you will get a full refund if there is no alternate available, or a second email with an alternate car offer. If you do not accept this alternative, you will receive a full refund. So you are protected in any situation.

If you are driving via the Moscow Ring Road, you should take Exit 25.
  • Moscow city and the surrounding road networks can get particularly busy, especially in the rush hour periods, which tend to fall between the hours of 08:00-10:00 in the morning and again between 17:00-19:00 in the evening rush. Weekends tend to be less busy. If you find your connection falls in the busy times, try to avoid this, if possible, by arriving earlier or taking advantage of the calmer afternoon period to return your Moscow Domodedovo Airport car hire. On your return, take the Kashira Highway in a southerly direction and merge onto the Domodedovo Airport Road, which will lead you to the terminals.
  • Moscow Domodedovo has just one terminal, so you can find several facilities on hand whilst in the airport. You can find numerous cafes, bars, and refreshments in the Arrivals hall, alongside exchange and ATM facilities. There is also a children’s centre if you are travelling as a family and several information points to assist your trip.
  • If you need to refill your fuel tank before returning your car hire at Moscow Domodedovo Airport, you can find several large 24h outlets such as BP and Shell on the main Garden Ring, which is Moscow’s main circular ring road. You can also find several located along the airport road, nearer to the airport itself.
