Import bookmarks and passwords from other browsers in Safari on Mac

If Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox is your default browser, you can automatically import your bookmarks, history and passwords when you first start using Safari, or manually import them later.

You can also import bookmarks that were exported in HTML format from Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and some other web browsers. And you can import passwords that were exported to a CSV file from a password app or another browser.

Imported bookmarks appear after your existing bookmarks.

Imported history appears with your existing history.

Imported passwords go into your iCloud Keychain, so you can autofill sign-in information on websites.

Open Safari for me

Automatically import from Chrome or Firefox

If this is the first time you’ve opened Safari after using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, a message at the bottom of the start page asks you if you want to keep imported items.

Select an option:

Keep your imported items: Safari keeps your imported bookmarks, history and passwords from Chrome and Firefox.

Remove your imported items: Safari removes your imported items.

Decide later: Return to the start page and import the items at another time. To see the start page, choose Bookmarks > Show Start Page.

You must have Chrome or Firefox installed on your Mac to import.

If a password you’re importing doesn’t match a password you’ve saved to your Mac, you can see the related account, username and password saved to your Mac, then choose which one to keep. See At least one password wasn’t imported .

Click Delete “ filename .csv” to protect the security of your accounts.

WARNING: The CSV file is not encrypted and anyone reading the file can see your passwords.

The exported file is called “Safari Bookmarks.html”.

Transfer favorites from Firefox to iPhone's safari

I use Firefox 3.6 on Mac OSX. What is the easiest way of transfer my favorites to iPhone ?

I know I could do; Firefox to Safari, and Safari to iPhone, but this is a bit tedious

Well, normally, iPhone couldn't sync with FFox directly. I think so.

First, organize your bookmarks, Bookmarks >> Organize Bookmarks . Choose all bookmarks to export. Click on the Favorites button on the Bookmarks Library window toolbar and choose Export HTML…. A standard Save dialog box is displayed.

Choose a location and a file name for the exported Bookmarks file and click the Save button. The bookmarks file is saved.

Then, we've to import that saved bookmarks from Safari again. Choose File >> Import Bookmarks Select the file you exported from Firefox and click the Import button. The Safari Bookmarks window opens and an item labelled Imported [date] is added at the end of the Bookmarks list in the Collections column. That item contains the Bookmarks you exported from Firefox.

plug your iPhone or iPod touch to iTunes.

Open iTunes. Select your iPhone or iPod in the Devices portion on the left-hand side of the iTunes window. The right-hand side of the iTunes window displays Settings tabs for the selected device. Select the Info tab. Scroll down to the Web Browser section of the Info tab. Check the box beside Sync Safari bookmarks.

Now when you sync your iPod touch or iPhone to your Mac the Safari bookmarks will be transferred.

  • This should work well. It's a bit of a kludge, and won't stay synced, but it should work. –  Alex Mar 15, 2010 at 6:30

Alternatively, you could use a web bookmarking service (like Delicious and use your bookmarks on any browser at any time. Not actually answering your question, but a suggestion :)

Eugene's user avatar

You could use Xmarks to automatically keep Firefox and Safari bookmarks in sync, and then sync Safari bookmarks with iPhone bookmarks whenever you do a normal iPhone sync.

This will allow you to keep bookmarks on the iPhone and in Firefox (and Safari too!) in sync without having to perform any manual steps each time.

Rather than using the default names given to the export file for Firefox and Chrome (“bookmarks”), it’s wise to add the browser name to it. This will make things much easier if you’re exporting and importing with all three browsers.

Top 3 Ways to Import Safari Bookmarks to Firefox on Mac and Windows

Safari is the natural choice for those invested in Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and macOS ecosystem. That said, Safari is only available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. So, you can’t access its bookmarks, history, and other data on Android, Windows, or Linux. If you’ve been looking to move away from Safari, there are a few popular cross-platform browsers such as Google Chrome , Microsoft Edge , and Mozilla Firefox . Out of those three, Firefox browser can be the ideal choice for those moving on from Safari and wish to import their bookmarks and other data.

Safari to firefox

There are a couple of reasons to pick Firefox over Safari. It is available on every major platform — Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux. And similar to Safari, Firefox also focuses on user privacy for delivering a secure web-browsing experience. So if you plan to use Firefox only on your Mac or on your Windows or Android device as well, we recommend you sign up for a Firefox account to sync your data between devices.

Safari to Firefox transition isn’t as easy as you might think. You might want to import the Bookmarked webpages from Safari to Firefox. After all, you have build up the reading list over the years and would want to carry it to Firefox too.

In this post, we are going to talk about the three best ways to import Safari bookmarks to Firefox. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Open the Firefox browser and tap on the Bookmarks menu at the top.

Step 2: Select Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks, or press Shift + Command + B keyboard shortcut on Mac. That will open the Bookmark Manager.

3. Use iCloud to Import Safari Bookmarks to Firefox on Windows

The tricks mentioned earlier only apply to macOS users. However, if you have switched to the Windows OS and want to import Safari Bookmarks, we have you covered.

Thankfully, you can act with the iCloud app on Windows. Follow the steps below to import Safari Bookmarks to Firefox on Windows.

Step 1: First, you need to download the Firefox browser for Windows from the official website.

Download Firefox for Windows

Step 2: Download the iCloud app from the Microsoft Store on Windows.

Get iCloud app for Windows

Step 3: Open the app on the PC and sign in using Apple login credentials.

Step 4: Tap on the Bookmarks menu and select Options.

Step 6: We have already installed Firefox on PC. Tap on Firefox option, and it will ask you to install iCloud Bookmarks extension from the Firefox store.

I Cloud add on

Step 7: Tap on the install button in the browser, and it will download and install the iCloud Bookmarks extension on Firefox Windows.

Step 8: Select the extension icon, and it will sync the Safari Bookmarks to Firefox. The syncing works in two-way here. In the future, if you Bookmark any webpage in the Firefox browser, the extension will sync the Bookmark to Safari using iCloud.

I Cloud extension

I like the third option. Even if you want to move back to the Safari browser in the future, you can be sure that the Firefox Bookmarks are already on the Safari browser using the iCloud extension.

After following any of the methods above, you can simply sync the Safari’s data that you’ve imported to your Firefox account for using it the Firefox browser on Mac, Windows, Android, iPhone, or iPad.

If you are planning to use Firefox on Mac, then consider using the first two options to import web bookmarks from Safari. If you are moving to Windows OS, then go with the third option which uses iCloud to export the Bookmarks.

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks and saves the last 15 backups for safekeeping. This article describes how to restore your bookmarks from the automatic backups that Firefox creates, how to save and restore your own bookmark backup files, and how to move your bookmarks to another computer.

  • If your bookmarks suddenly become unavailable in Firefox, see Recover lost or missing Bookmarks for troubleshooting information.
  • For more information about using bookmarks, see Bookmarks in Firefox .

Table of Contents

  • 1.1 Manual backup
  • 1.2 Restoring from backups
  • 2.1 Using Firefox Sync
  • 2.2 Using a bookmark backup file
  • 3 Restoring bookmarks after upgrading or downgrading Windows 10

Backup and restore

Manual backup.

  • In the Bookmarks backup filename window that opens, choose a location to save the file, which is named bookmarks-"date".json by default. The desktop is usually a good spot, but any place that is easy to remember will work.
  • Save the bookmarks json file. The Bookmarks backup filename window will close and then you can close the Library window.

Restoring from backups

  • The dated entries are automatic bookmark backups.
  • Choose File… lets you restore from a manual backup (see above).
  • After selecting a backup and confirming your choice, your bookmarks from that backup will be restored.
  • Close the Library window.

Moving bookmarks to another computer

Using firefox sync.

You can use Firefox Sync to move your bookmarks from one computer to another.

Firefox Sync is the best way to keep your bookmarks (and other profile data) synchronized between all of the computers you use. See How do I set up Sync on my computer? for more information and instructions on setting it up.

Using a bookmark backup file

You can also use a bookmark backup file from one computer and restore it on another computer. This is useful if you can't synchronize the two computers' bookmarks using Sync, for some reason.

The bookmark backup file can either be a manual backup (see above) or one of the automatic dated backups located inside the Firefox profile folder named bookmarkbackups folder. Place the bookmark backup file on your transfer media (for example a Flash drive) and copy it to the desktop (or any location) of the other computer. You can then restore the backup from the Firefox Library window, using the Choose File… option, as described in the Restoring from backups section above.

Restoring bookmarks after upgrading or downgrading Windows 10

After upgrading or downgrading your Windows 10 operating system, a directory named Windows.old is created, and most of the data erased from the upgrade or downgrade is stored there. One especially useful item is the Bookmarks from Firefox. Follow the instructions in Restoring from backups above, and when you select Choose File… , follow the path C:\Windows.old\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<filename.default>\bookmarkbackups to your previous bookmarks. Check the file date for information when the backup was created. Be aware using a backup bookmark folder will replace all the bookmarks in Firefox with the bookmarks in the backup file.
