Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering city of Mecca as well as the area around the iconic Kaaba stone.

Riyadh's Kingdom Centre Tower

Kingdom Centre is such an iconic symbol of Saudi Arabia's capital that an emoji version of it shows up when you say you're "Traveling to" Riyadh on Facebook. A shopping mall and residential complex that's also home to an observatory (which is not surprising, since it rises 992 feet above the ground), Kingdom Centre is actually only the third-tallest building in Saudi Arabia, in spite of its fame.

Certainly, it will be a great place to begin any Riyadh city trip once Saudi Arabia opens up to tourists, offering visitors both figurative and literal perspective on the bustling national capital of 5.2 million people, which is also home to the Kingdom's main airport. It's easy to see the observation deck becoming Saudi Arabia's most popular selfie spot!

Empty Quarter

Although the vast majority of the aptly-named "Empty Quarter" technically belongs to Saudi Arabia, there are no borders here—it's just sand, after all, with nothing different about it between Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. On the other hand, the Empty Quarter (which is known in Arabic as Rub' al Khali) is far from boring, whether you come on a camel safari, to drive 4x4s through the dunes or to visit with the nomadic tribes who call this seemingly inhospitable place home.

A number of places in Saudi Arabia are accessible to independent travelers once visas start being issued, but this is probably a destination for which you'll want to have a guide. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to find your way out of sand dunes alone? To say nothing of all the rodents and scorpions who call this area home—it's best to set up camp according to the recommendations of someone who knows the lay of the land!

Coral Houses of Jeddah

The Red Sea port of Jeddah is known as a relatively liberal and open city; from lax enforcement of the country's strict rules about female attire, to the generally laid back attitude of the people. In addition to a great vibe, Jeddah offers one awesome tourist attraction in particular: The so-called "Coral Houses," built out of blocks of coral harvested from the sea.

They're currently in a state of disrepair (almost notoriously), but are still a worthwhile destination.

Lost City of Mada'in Saleh

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of decades, you've heard of the Lost City of Petra (which is no longer "lost" at all) in Jordan. What you might not realize is that Saudi Arabia is home to a city that's both similar in design and origin, dating back to the Nabatean Kingdom of the 1st century.

Although many Saudis enjoy visiting Madai'in Saleh, it maintains a low profile among foreigners, which means that you should be able to enjoy a trip here in relative peace. Certainly, it will take a long time before Mada'in Saleh reaches the "tourist trap" status of Petra, if that ever happens at all.

Prophet's Mosque in Medina

Mecca is the highest-profile holy place in Saudi Arabia, but if you read Islamic history, you'll realize that Medina is also quite important—the Prophet Muhammad taught here for a number of years after he came of age in Mecca, and before he returned to the city in his later life. The most stunning site in Medina is the mosque of Al-Masjid an-Nabawī, whose origins date back to the year 622.

As is the case with Mecca, non-Muslims are currently prohibited from setting foot in central Medina.

Red Sea Scuba Diving

 Abdullah Al-Eisa / Getty Images

It's tempting to think of Saudi Arabia as a land of nothing but desert, but the country has incredibly long coastlines on both the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. In the case of the latter, this means that Saudi Arabia is home to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world. This is not a surprise if you've ever visited Egypt's Sinai peninsula, which is also located on the Red Sea.

A bonus of scuba diving in Saudi Arabia, famous sites of which include Allah's Reef and Boiler Wreck, is that you won't have to put up with the huge crowds you see in Egypt. In fact, it's unlikely you'll encounter any crowds at all, since scuba diving is relatively unpopular among Saudis.

9 landmark places to visit in Saudi Arabia

By Nicola Chilton

Saudi Arabia Jazan Province Aerial view of boat sailing through mangrove forest in Farasan Islands archipelago

With a goal of attracting 100 million visitors a year by 2030, Saudi Arabia is working flat out to develop its tourism industry. While many of its ambitious giga-projects , including Neom and the Red Sea, are still taking shape, there are plenty of other places worth a visit. With its deserts, mountains, oases and extraordinary underwater environments, you could spend years exploring the kingdom, but if you only have a few days, here's our pick of nine of the most intriguing places in Saudi Arabia.

The Nabataean tombs of Hegra

The Nabataean tombs of Hegra

Simply put, there’s nowhere like AlUla. From the Nabataean tombs of Hegra to the rock faces of Jabal Ikmah, which are covered in centuries’ worth of inscriptions and petroglyphs, the lion tombs of Dadan, the 900 mudbrick houses of AlUla Old Town, the two million date palms in the oasis and so much more, this small town is the crowning jewel of Saudi Arabia's tourism ambitions. Summer sees quieter heritage sites, but even in winter it’s not crowded – yet. This is the time of year for pop-up restaurants, concerts at the dazzling mirrored Maraya, hot air balloon flights and hiking. Bed down at Habitas or the Banyan Tree AlUla and you’ll not only have a comfy home for the night, but access to two of the Kingdom’s most stunning swimming pools.

Khaybars ancient oasis

Khaybar’s ancient oasis

Along with AlUla and Tayma, Khaybar is one of a trio of oases that have recently opened up to visitors. The volcanic landscapes here are a draw in themselves, with rare geological formations that include the longest lava tubes in the kingdom. Khaybar’s ancient oasis, built around freshwater springs and wadis, supports a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna, as well as thousands of years of human life – recent archaeological discoveries of ancient funerary sites are changing previous assumptions made about the early history of the region. During the winter months, it’s possible to stay in the luxury tents of the Khaybar Volcano Camp, as well as hike through dramatic scenery, explore ruined fortresses or see it all by air, either on a helicopter tour or by tethered balloon.

Tayma is home to the Hadaj Well

Tayma is home to the Hadaj Well

The third in the trio of oases along the ancient Incense Route, Tayma is still revealing its secrets to archaeologists. Finds here point to early connections with ancient Egypt , and reveal a complex society that lived and thrived thousands of years ago. Today, it’s possible to see their legacy in the 3,000-year-old Iron Age Temple of Salm, and to explore more “modern” heritage buildings dating back a modest 300 and 100 years. Rent a car in Medina or AlUla, and you can embark on a self-drive multi-day adventure to visit all three of the oases.

The Asir Mountains experience some of the coolest conditions in Saudi Arabia during the summer months

The Asir Mountains experience some of the coolest conditions in Saudi Arabia during the summer months

The mountainous Asir province, with its distinct culture, castles and museums, is one of the best places in the kingdom to visit in summer, when you’re more likely to encounter cool temperatures, mist and drizzle than hot sun. The provincial capital Abha is a good starting point for journeys in the region, at its most beautiful in May when the city’s thousands of jacaranda trees burst into purple blooms. Don’t miss the 700-year-old village of Rijal Almaa with its multi-storey stone houses and interiors painted in Al-Qatt Al-Asiri patterns, a tradition led by women and listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Head up higher to the Al-Dabab Walkway, a seven-kilometre trail at an altitude of 2,200 metres, to take in vistas of the Sarawat Mountains, cascading waterfalls, terraced farms and – the highlight for many visitors – swirling clouds of fog.

The AlAhsa Oasis

The Al-Ahsa Oasis

5. Dammam and the Eastern Province

The city of Dammam may be known as the gateway to neighbouring Bahrain, connected via the King Fahd Causeway, but it’s also the gateway to a number of worthwhile sights in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. A 90-minute drive from the city will take you to Al-Ahsa, home to the world’s largest self-contained oasis with three million palm trees, as well as natural springs and the limestone rocks and caves of Jabal Al-Qarah. Continue on to neighbouring Dhahran to visit the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, also known as Ithra, with five galleries dedicated to Middle Eastern art, Saudi culture, Islamic art, the natural history of the Arabian Peninsula and archives, as well as a dedicated children’s museum, theatre, cinema, library, restaurants and cafes. It’s all housed within a building reminiscent of huge smooth pebbles designed by architectural firm Snøhetta, an edifice that’s worth a journey in its own right.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of AtTuraif

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif

Diriyah is the latest mega-project to open to visitors, and one of great historical significance to the kingdom. It was here, in 1727, that the First Saudi State was established. At Diriyah’s heart is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif and the mudbrick Salwa Palace housing displays that chart its history and development. Within the next few years, Diriyah will be home to 38 hotels, many built in traditional Najdi style, as well as retail, residences and cultural attractions, and an extensive network of hiking and biking trails. But it’s Bujairi Terrace that is proving to be the biggest draw right now, a lifestyle destination featuring popular local and international restaurants ranging from high-end to casual, as well as a calendar of regular events.

The Farasan Islands in Saudi's Kazan Province

The Farasan Islands in Saudi's Kazan Province

7. Jazan and the Farasan Islands

Located in the far southwest of Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea coast, Jazan is a place where mountains, beaches and historical sites meet. It’s also the starting point for adventures among the coral reefs, mangroves and clear waters of the Saudi Wildlife Authority-protected Farasan Islands, only three of which have permanent inhabitants. While the rich marine and bird life may be the key draws for those seeking nature above and below the waves, there’s also fascinating human history here, and current-day communities to visit. Archaeological evidence shows that humans have been active on these islands since the 1 st millennium BC. As there still aren’t many services in Farasan, the best way to dive into the marine world here is to visit on an organised diving or snorkelling tour departing from Jazan.

Traditional mashrabiya woodwork and architecture in Jeddah's historical district AlBalad

Traditional mashrabiya woodwork and architecture in Jeddah's historical district, Al-Balad

The friendly Red Sea city of Jeddah is a great place for first-time travellers to the kingdom to kick off their Saudi adventures. Join the locals for a sunset stroll along the Corniche, explore the centuries-old houses in the city’s Al-Balad district, or dive into the excellent local cuisine, influenced by generations of pilgrims who arrived by sea on their way to Makkah, many of whom decided to stay and brought their own flavours and home recipes with them. There are also plenty of opportunities to get out into the Red Sea. A much-loved local diving spot is the island of Abu Tair and the wreck of The Staphonos, nicknamed the Cable Wreck for the construction materials the ship had on board when it sank in 1928. You're also likely to spot sharks and rays in the waters around here.

The mountainous region of Taif is home to more than 700 rose farms

The mountainous region of Taif is home to more than 700 rose farms

Mountainous Taif is famous for its rose harvests, with more than 700 farms growing the fragrant flowers that form the base of the region’s high-quality rosewater. During harvest season in March and April, many are open to visitors and you’ll be in for a rose-tinted treat, with pink petals piled high and the air filled with their sweet floral scent. But there’s much more than flowers here. There are some fairly touristy heritage villages which can be fun if you’re travelling with kids, but the mountain views and hiking up are the real reason to visit.

Saudi Arabia Travel guide: Everything you need to know about KSA.

Considering Saudi Arabia?  Visiting KSA and this part of the Middle East is somewhere that has been on our bucket list for a long time and this year we finally got to visit. But deciding where to go in a country so big is not easy; so we went ALL over.  Here is our Saudi Arabia travel guide with everything you need to know to plan your visit too.

  • Why visit Saudi Arabia?

Travel guide for Saudi Arabia starting in the city of Riyadh.

Why visit Saudi Arabia?

While the country has always received many visitors for Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimages) it has been essentially (effectively) closed off entirely for tourism until 2019.

Now it is open with a tourist visa ; yet it still remains a bit of a mystery as far as mainstream tourism goes… But for those of us (guilty) who have a particular passion for countries away from the mainstream tourist trail; Saudi Arabia fits perfectly…

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a Middle Eastern country that makes up the vast majority of the Arabian Peninsula.  In other words, it’s huge!

It’s not the most common tourist destination to head for with kids but I am going to tell you about how we found it a truly great – and incredibly hospitable – travel destination that was  perfect  for a road trip adventure…

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with kids in our Saudi Arabia travel guide.

It’s great news regarding visas for Saudi Arabia as a traveller. International visitors from 49 countries can apply for an eVisa for Saudi Arabia.   And  a whole lot of those 49 can also (check pandemic changes to regulations) actually apply for a Visa on Arrival.

In order to enter Saudi Arabia (at any border entry point) visitors travelling with an eVisa also need:

  • An eligible passport with more than 6 months validity remaining
  • A valid eVisa
  • Evidence of onward travel to another country
  • Address of accommodation in Saudi Arabia

But here’s how we did it.  Crossing to Saudi Arabia from Bahrain on the King Fahd Causeway we hadn’t pre-arranged eVisas for Saudi.  We had done (and had fingers crossed) as much research as we could find out and understood that there was a theory we could get a Visa on Arrival at the causeway border.  And if not; we would need to hook to the wifi (literally) at the visa office right there and apply for and receive an eVisa.

This was in fact what ended up happening.  And so in doing so we entered Saudi Arabia with kids and four times eVisas in our hands at the crossing.

Travel in Jeddah Saudi Arabia with kids in our Saudi Arabia travel guide.

Getting  to  Saudi Arabia

There are four international airports in Saudi Arabia that travellers can enter with an eVisa:

  • King Khalid International Airport (RUH) –  Riyadh
  • King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) –  Jeddah
  • King Fahd International (DMM) –  Dammam
  • Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International (MED) –  Madinah

And  it is also possible to enter Saudi Arabia overland from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain .  Which is exactly what we did.

I have written a separate guide to the overland border crossing from the Kingdom of Bahrain to Saudi Arabia.  And about how to enter overland into Saudi Arabia with kids in tow. (Note: It isn’t actually that hard).

From Bahrain, entry to the country is via the King Fahd Bridge border checkpoint.  This is a 25km causeway from Bahrain to the city of Khobar (less than 50km from Dammam).

Entry into Saudi Arabia by road from the UAE is via the Al Batha border crossing.  This is located on the Emirates’ Western border approximately 500 km southeast of Riyadh.

Crossing the King Fahd Bridge from Bahrain to Saudi Arabia (everything you need to know in our Saudi Arabia travel guide).

Currency and cash in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi riyal is the currency of Saudi Arabia.  At the time of our visit in July and August 2022 the exchange rate is as below:

  • 1 SAR  = 0.27 USD
  • 10 SAR  = 2.67 USD
  • 100 SAR  = 26.66 USD
  • 1000 SAR  = 266.58 USD

Cash comes in notes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Rs.

There are many ATM’s on the roadside in Saudi Arabia (and quite seriously there are plenty of drive-through ATM’s lining the highways and huge petrol station stops!).

The first ATM we used was less than 1km after entering KSA (while we were still on the King Fahd Causeway middle island).  The most common banks we found and used with our international bank cards while in Saudi Arabia were:

  • Al Rajhi Bank

Each of these ATM’s worked for us each time and had the menu option in English on the first page of display.

Al Rajhi Bank and how to use ATM's in Saudi Arabia travel guide.

Going in to shops and restaurants in the big cities you will find people that speak some English.  However out in rural Saudi Arabia an English translation is much more limited.

It is  hugely  appreciated if you can greet and thank people you meet in Arabic.  And even if you can’t speak much more than that; do not worry! The people of Saudi Arabia are extremely hospitable and welcoming and will make sure you are comfortable even without a common language to do so.

  • Hi/Hello:  Salam Alaykum
  • Thank you:  Shukran
  • You’re welcome:  Afwan
  • How are you?  Kaif halak? Or Kaif al hal?
  • I’m fine, thank you:  Ana bikhayr shukran
  • What is your name?  Eysh Esmk?
  • How much?  Be kam?
  • Please:  Min Fdlek
  • Yes:  Eewa
  • No:  La

Our itinerary around Saudi Arabia

Here is our itinerary from a month of travel in Saudi Arabia.   We started in the North and headed towards the capital by train; flew out west and then drove by rental car to the beautiful south of the country…

  • Bahrain  > taxi   >  Al Khobar  entry border
  • Al Khobar  > taxi >  Dammam
  • Dammam  > train >  Al Hofuf
  • Al Hofuf  > train >  Riyadh
  • Riyadh  > domestic flight >  Tabuk
  • Tabuk  > rental car >  AlUla
  • AlUla  > rental car >  Yanbu
  • Jeddah  > rental car >  Abha
  • Abha  > rental car >  Jeddah

Plus we visited  Taif ,  Halaba ,  Al Bahah  and  Al Qunfuddah  as towns we stayed at least one night in during our trip around by rental car in East and southern Saudi Arabia!

Places to visit in Saudi Arabia

Alright. The country is HUGE.  It is in fact the  13 th  largest country  in the world by land size area so there is much to see.  And each of the different regions of the country is very different from the last.

Here are the highlights from our time in Saudi Arabia with what we would recommend you prioritise in each place…

The northern coastal city of Dammam is somewhere that has boomed since the discovery of oil and thus petrol in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  From the history we observed on display at the incredible Heritage Village in Dammam (see below) it was a fairly average-sized city before the boom of industry and the rush of people moving to the area.

Things to do in Dammam

  • Heritage Village:  A must see in Dammam! This was a highlight for us and a great way to learn about the different regions of Saudi Arabia.
  • Dammam Corniche:  As long as it’s not too hot (read: July or August!) it’s beautiful to walk along the corniche right by sea.
  • King Fahad Park:  Said to be the largest park in Saudi Arabia by size and also an amusement park with over 25 rides.
  • Cobra Entertainment City:  Another park and amusement area famous for being one of the best and most beautiful recreational places in  Dammam.

Visiting the Heritage village in Dammam what to do in Dammam visit Saudi Arabia travel guide for Saudi Arabia with kids.

Transportation from Dammam

  • Train to Al Hofuf:  1.5 hours
  • Train to Riyadh:  4 hours
  • Drive to Riyadh:  4.5 hours

Known also as Al Hufuf, this city of Saudi Arabia in the Eastern Province not only has one of the largest oil fields in the world but is also one of the largest date producers in the world.  Al Hofuf is situated in the largest oasis in the world with huge groves of palm trees; counted at over two million.

Things to do in Al Hofuf

  • Qaisariah Souq:  Traditional market place selling gold jewellery, gifts and textiles.
  • Al Qarah Mountain:  Stunning rock formations and natural caves that show archaeological evidence of some of the oldest settlements in the Arabian Peninsula dating back to 5,000 BC.
  • Jawatha Mosque:  Built in 628AD it is the first mosque in the Eastern province.  It is said that the first jummah prayer outside Madinah was prayed here.
  • Ibrahim Palace:  A beautiful 500+ year old palace and related museum and architectural masterpiece that was a Turkish military barracks and the main headquarters of the Ottoman garrison in Al-Ahsaa.

Al Hofuf in Saudi Arabia travel guide.

This is the capital city of Saudi Arabia and there are endless options of sights to see and activities to do in Riyadh; literally from luxury tours and restaurants to hiking on the outskirts at the famous ‘Edge of the World’.

Things to do in Riyadh

  • Kingdom Tower:  Riyadh’s iconic and ultra-modern skyscraper. You can walk along the skybridge for an epic view of the city.
  • Masmak Fort:  The museum inside the old fort gives a good history and map of the old city with artefacts from the area.
  • National Museum of Saudi Arabia:  The Kingdom’s biggest and best museum showcasing centuries of Arabian prehistory, history, culture and art.
  • Deera Square:  A lot of history here but if you’re visiting Saudi Arabia with kids this is also a great place to splash in the water fountains!
  • Najd Village:  The best restaurant in Riyadh for tourists with traditional food and a traditional set up inside.
  • Edge of the World:  This was a separate highlight for us in Riyadh out of the main city. I highly recommend visiting KSA’s Edge of the World!
  • Al Baik:  Any Saudi you meet will recommend you  must  try Al Baik (it’s fried chicken; like the Middle Eastern answer to KFC).  Go on; do it…

Riyadh and Saudi Arabia with kids!

Transportation from Riyadh

  • Train to Al Hofuf:  2.5 hours
  • Train to Dammam:  4 hours
  • Bus to Dammam:  4.5 hours
  • Domestic flight to Tabuk:  1 hr 50 mins
  • Drive to Jeddah:  9+ hours

The very famous Madain Saleh is located near the city of AlUla and is the iconic image you will have seen of  Hegra ; the beautiful rock city in the desert that looks a lot like neighbouring Petra in Jordan.

The official  AlUla website  has all the information for visiting Hegra and buying tickets online.

Things to do in AlUla

  • Madain Saleh/Hegra:  The southernmost settlement of the Nabatean Kingdom (the kingdoms second largest settlement after Petra) consisting of over 131 tock-cut monumental tombs and caves.
  • Elephant Rock:  An artfully formed outcrop that almost looks as if it must be made for Instagrammers.  With some creative license the shape of the rock resembles the form of an elephant with a long trunk.
  • Hotel Pakistan:  We have added this in as a must-try attraction (ok; restaurant) in AlUla. This has to be some of the best food we came across in Saudi Arabia!

Visiting Hegra in AlUla and Saudi Arabia with kids.

A port city of the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia (and for us a halfway(ish) point between AlUla and Jeddah in the south).  Yanbu is actually the second largest port city on the south of the country (after Jeddah) and one of the oldest seaports on the Red Sea with history dating back approximately 2500 years.

Things to do in Yanbu

  • Yanbu Historical Area:  An interesting area on the waterfront (currently under construction) to get a sense of architecture and housing style in this area of KSA.
  • Dinner in Food Street:  Lots of outdoor cafes right on the waterfront.  Everything from Turkish to Egyptian, popcorn and pizza.
  • Yanbu Port:  Walk along the waterfront port and cruise ship dock in the centre of Yanbu’s port city.

The beautiful historical centre of Yanbu, Saudi Arabia travel guide.

The port city of Jeddah has long been regarded as Saudi Arabia’s cultural capital; the perfect blend of old and new.  Jeddah has always served as the gateway to Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.  And as a result has been heavily influenced by the influx of pilgrims it has received over the centuries.

Things to do in Jeddah

  • Jeddah Corniche:  A great picnic spot and (obviously) beautiful place for a walk along the Red Sea and waterfront.
  • Al Balad:  The neighbourhood of Al Balad is the oldest in the city and served as the city-centre for several hundred years.
  • King Fahad’s Fountain:  The tallest fountain of its type in the world and definitely worth a look.
  • Al Balad Souk:   Al Balad  is home to the main traditional souks in Jeddah like the Bedouin market where in the past Bedouin travellers would sell their own products (now you’ll find food products like coffee, cardamom, grains and nuts).
  • Al Romanisah:  Not technically a historic or site as listed on KSA’s guiding website but I’m adding it in. Check out our video of trying Saudi’s famous restaurant and I reckon you will be convinced too…

Transportation from Jeddah

  • Drive to Al Bahah: 5 hours
  • Drive to Yanbu: 3.5 hours
  • Drive to Al Qunfudhah: 4 hours
  • Drive to Riyadh: 9.5 hours
  • Flight to Riaydh: 1.5 hours

Al Bahah is one of Saudi Arabia’s prized destinations; not only for international visitors but for domestic tourism as well.  It enjoys a pleasant climate and is surrounded  by natural sights and beauty with more than 40 forests and waterfalls.

Things to do in Al Bahah

  • King Fahd Mountain Pass:  A drive along King Fahd’s Mountain Pass serves up some of the best views in Al Baha with scenic villages and deep valleys.
  • Sheda Village:  A historic village hidden in the green cliffs and valleys of the Sarawat Mountains. Even driving by you get views of ancient stone houses dotting the roadside and offering a glimpse of a time and communities past.
  • Dhe Ayan:  Often called the Marble Village this is another historic village of the past where the cuboid buildings are made of stone and slate and tucked right up into the hillside.

Travel tip:  I’m adding this as an official travel tip in our Saudi Arabia travel guide because the beautiful King Fahd Mountain Pass is worth a drive just for the views of epic valleys and villages. Even if you aren’t stopping and staying in Al Bahah I would recommend coming this way around towards Abha.

Stone walls and buildings in Abha and Al Bahah Saudi Arabia.

The hilltop city of Abha is the capital city of the Aseer Province in the southwest of the country.  It’s known as a summer playground or resort town for Saudi nationals (to escape the heat of the desert cities during the peak of summer holidays) as well as hosting tourists from all over the GCC that flock here to escape the sweltering summer heat.

(So do note; it can get particularly busy during those summer months and accommodation prices not only skyrocket but make it hard to find somewhere to stay). Plan ahead with that one…

Things to do in Abha

  • Rijal Almaa:  This beautiful village is on UNESCO’s tentative heritage list as a colourful stone village that’s original homes have stood the test of time now for centuries. Now a restored touristic site and museum the village is worth the drive from Abha to visit.
  • Al-Basta:  Known as the neighbourhood holding the largest number of ancient buildings and monuments; this is Abha’s main tourist destination.
  • Green Mountain:  Specifically the iconic mountain of Abha (known favourably as Green Mountain) that provides an incredible view of the city and can only be reached by cable car.
  • Abu Kheyal Park:  Famous for the bright purple blossoms of Jacaranda trees in the early spring.
  • Fog Walkway:  Also dubbed the Corniche of Abha where all the infamous pictures with clouds are taken.

Visiting Rijal Almaa in Saudi Arabia travel guide.

Transportation from Abha

  • Drive to Jeddah: 8 – 9 hours
  • Drive to Al Qunfudah: 4 hours
  • Bus to Jeddah: 10 hours
  • Flight to Jeddah: 1 hour
  • Flight to Riyadh: 1.75 hours

Food in Saudi Arabia (you need to try )

Food plays a very important role in traditional Saudi Arabian culture and is seen as a symbol of hospitality.

The most common food items you will come across on your travels in Saudi Arabia include rice, chicken, lamb, spices, yoghurt, potatoes, bread and dates.  LOTS of dates.

  • Kabsa:  Rice and roast chicken with fried onions, raisins, pine nuts (the most famous dish in Saudi Arabia!)
  • Maqluba:  This is a favourite of ours and most simply described as an upside-down rice dish!
  • Tamiya  (falafel): Vegetarian fritter made chickpeas/fava beans
  • Mandi:  Rice and meat cooked in a Tandoor oven
  • Sharwarma :
  • Kibbeh:  Deep fried croquettes of wheat, meat and pinenuts (the word kibbeh comes from the Arabic word kubbah, for  ball ).
  • Gahwa:  Arabic coffee mixed with spices
  • Sambusak  (samosas): Savoury, deep-fried pastries stuffed with meat
  • Kunafah:  Sweet, crunchy pastry

What kind of food will the kids eat while we’re in Saudi Arabia?

It’s definitely a fair call to be contemplating travel in Saudi Arabia with kids and wondering what on earth they are likely to eat while you’re there…

Here are some firm favourites we found during our month of travels (that was not including the supermarket packaged treats that I do admit were also handy when in transit on a road trip between cities!).

  • Arayes:  Crispy pita bread sandwiches
  • Shakshouka:  Poached eggs in cooked tomato sauce – this one we had at breakfast time in a couple of places.
  • Jallab:  Basically a fruit syrup!
  • Basbousa:  Semolina cake
  • Muhallebi:  Milk pudding made with rice flour

Traveling with kids in Saudi Arabia is great! Read our Saudi Arabia travel guide for everything you need to know about what kind of food is in Saudi Arabia.

Also note that most markets don’t open until late afternoon (around 4pm).  AND I have to say that only a couple of hotels out of alllll the different ones we stayed at actually included breakfast in the room charge.  (I mean seriously they barely even offered utensils or crockery).  So don’t get the idea of filling up on breakfasts for the days adventures.  Best to head to the markets or find a roadside restaurant (we can recommend a few of  those  we enjoyed!).

Transportation in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a huge country to travel around. (Remember; it’s the 13 th  biggest country in the world by land-size!).  But the good news is that it is also a country with multiple options for travel – overland, by public transport (train) or by flight.

Here is what we found about transportation in Saudi Arabia condensed into the following Saudi Arabia travel guide!

Getting around Saudi Arabia by train

The Dammam-Riyadh train line offers a (relatively) budget-friendly way to travel between the largest Saudi cities (with a view).

There are six daily departures on two trains (one operating Sunday through Thursday and the other on Thursdays and Saturdays).

The trains we went on between Dammam and Riyadh have Premium (1st) class and Standard (2nd) class, a café on board and even a prayer area.

Tickets between  Dammam and Riyadh  cost:

  • 1 st  class:  136.50 SAR (USD $37)
  • 2 nd  class:  78.75 SAR (USD $21)

There is also a  North Train  that connects Riyadh to the north of Saudi Arabia and serves the following stations:

  • Hai; and

And the  Haramain High-Speed Railway  popular with pilgrims is the latest and fastest train in the Middle East, operating between the holy cities of Makkah and Medina in western Saudi Arabia. It serves the following stations: Makkah, Jeddah, King Abdullah Economic City and Medina.  (Note you cannot visit Makkah as a non-Muslim tourist).

Getting around Saudi Arabia by rental car

Although you might have heard tales fast and erratic driving in Saudi Arabia (sorry; they’re mostly true) and be put off the consideration of hiring a car in Saudi; it is actually a great way to get around the country. (As long as you’re a confident driver).  Because the country is geographically HUGE!

There are maddening crowds and traffic in the big cities, mountain switchbacks (looking at you, Abha) and dark desert highways that stretch for literally miles on end.

But in actual fact road conditions are fairly good and when we rented a car and drove in Saudi Arabia (ok, Gavin drove) this year we had a great experience and found it an economical way to get from one side of the country to (almost literally) the other.

Cars in Saudi Arabia are left-hand drive and automatic transmission is standard.

And luckily, petrol in Saudi Arabia is cheap (no surprises there).  Petrol costs about 1.5 riyal/L ($0.40 USD) for 91 and 2 riyal/L ($0.50 USD) for 95.

Note: As a non-resident (tourist) you do need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car and drive in Saudi Arabia.

We hired a car through Avis rentals and found their service particularly good.  We picked up the car in Tabuk and returned it to Jeddah three weeks later. A great experience.

Getting around Saudi Arabia by plane

Getting  to  Saudi Arabia is easy these days with four international airports served by a wealth of different international carriers.

Saudi Arabia also operates 15 domestic airports around the country with three carriers that make short hops between regions fairly cost effective too.

  • Nesma Airlines

It’s easy to book flights online through each carriers website (or using a larger flight scanning app or site).

Getting around Saudi Arabia by taxi

It’s fairly easy to get a taxi in the major cities of Saudi Arabia.  (In Dammam we were picked up by a taxi driver who said he couldn’t bear to see us outside in the heat and insisted on dropping us off for free!).

The cheapest option is definitely Uber although sometimes we found with the long wait time it wasn’t the most sensible choice (especially waiting in the heat with kids).

In Dammam an Uber for 3km cost us around 15SAR.  And in Riyadh during the peak evening time we got an Uber for 10km for 45SAR.

Budgeting for Saudi Arabia

There’s no need to beat around the bush with this part of the travel guide for Saudi.   Whether you are in Saudi Arabia with kids or not; it is an expensive country to travel in.

Not only is it above average costs for the daily budget as a traveller; it is expensive to  enter  the country (see above section about visas) unless you are a Gulf country citizen or resident worker.  But there are different options for food and drinks (like a supermarket or finding a smaller non-chain restaurant) that can help to budget for your trip…

  • Water  (1L): 2 SAR
  • Soft drink  (can): 4 SAR
  • Coffee  (Starbucks): 18 SAR
  • Ice cream  (packaged): 3 SAR
  • Meal  at McDonalds:
  • Sharwarma:  15 SAR
  • Hummus:  8 SAR
  • Chicken kabab:  24 SAR
  • Mixed grill  meat platter: 35 SAR
  • Pizza  (restaurant): 35 SAR
  • Uber  (3km): 15 SAR
  • Uber  (peak time; 10km): 45 SAR
  • SIM card  (STC with 20GB): 95 SAR

Connectivity and WIFI

WIFI is a bit hit and miss across accommodation in Saudi Arabia.  (That’s putting it politely. Don’t get your hopes up; sorry). We’ve have some hotels that were great and WIFI

was fast and included in the price.  And then others where the signal is so weak it can’t even pick up the supposed ‘free WIFI’…

The major cities have 5G mobile reception which with a local SIM and data makes it the most efficient way to navigate the country (especially if driving by car as the distances between cities – or even shops or villages where people might help – are huge).

SIM cards and data

There are 3 main operators in Saudi Arabia:  STC, Mobily and Zain.

They have similar packages and prices and coverage is great in the cities. All the SIM cards are valid for 7 or 30 days in Saudi Arabia.

  • STC KSA : SAR 30 and comes with SAR 25 with of credit
  • Mobily : prepaid plans for SAR 25, 30, 75, and 150
  • Zain KSA : 55 SAR for 2GB data

From what information I could find before we arrived (we needed a Saudi Arabia travel guide and hence creating this one!) it sounded like STC is the best option (it’s the largest phone operator in the country).

Prices for a prepaid STC sim card in Saudi Arabia:

  • 65 SAR ($17 USD): 2GB data, 5GB social media, 500 minutes
  • 90 SAR ($24 USD): 8GB data, 200 minutes
  • 160 SAR ($42 USD): 10GB data, unlimited social media and calls

SIM card registration is mandatory in Saudi Arabia and will be done at the point of sale (using your passport information).  And you also have to provide your fingerprint for additional security (true).

Accommodation options in Saudi Arabia

Alright this area of our Saudi Arabia travel guide is going to just be honest and let you know what accommodation in Saudi Arabia is like.  I wouldn’t rate it.  I assume if you have lots of money and are traveling in luxury through the Kingdom (as many domestic and international travellers are) as it is renowned for; then truly your options are limited.  There are not backpacker hostels or even backpacker- type  places to stay yet.  It’s only early days.

So there is a weird combination of budget chain hotels (OYO) that aren’t in fact actually budget prices.  And smaller hotels trying to offer what might have once looked like luxury accommodation (headboards so big the bed hardly fits in the room and lace and overexaggerated furniture).

But the most odd thing about the accommodation has to be in the kitchens.  Seriously, some of the kitchens are ridiculously enormous.  Huge cook-tops, full-size catering ovens, fridges and a huge dining.  But no cutlery and no crockery and no pots and pans.  Like; none at all.

And if you go to the reception to ask if you might have a cup to use with the provided electric kettle they look at you very strangely.  They might if you’re lucky call housekeeping who will need the security guard to translate your very unusual request and might provide you with a paper cup (even two) for a hot drink.  Nice.

But overall we did manage to make our way around the country trialling a range of accommodation options.  Some we would recommend and stay in again and some maybe not.

10 Incredible Experiences In Saudi Arabia For 2023

by Priyal Yadav | Jan 24, 2022

Experience Saudi Arabia through 10 incredible escapades to enjoy a holiday like nothing you have ever seen before. Experience nature, history & wonder in Arabia

What makes Saudi Arabia so appealing as an international holiday destination? We think it’s the idea that Arabia had not been open to tourists for as long as one can remember. In addition, the uncharted landmarks in Arabia are a wonderful delight for anyone interested in experiencing new things.

From beautiful coral reefs and desert rock formations to historical ones like Mada’In Saleh and old Jeddah – there is a treasure trove of discoveries to be had in the Middle East. Although the list of tourist places in Saudi Arabia and Arab wonders is extensive, here is World Travel Magazine’s selection of the ten most incredible experiences to be had in Saudi Arabia.

What are the 10 Incredible Experiences in Saudi Arabia?

1. eve’s tomb, jeddah, saudi arabia.

In the ancient city of Jeddah, the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia, is a cemetery known for the burial place of the first woman, Eve. So legendary is this tomb that the city it rests in has been named after the woman who rests there. Eve is widely considered the grandmother of humanity, and Jeddah means Grandmother in Arabic.

The tomb has been the stuff of legends since nearly the 12th century when Ibn Jubayr mentioned its presence in his travelogues. Eve Tomb is, obviously, one of the most famous places in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, a part of the cemetery was destroyed by Prince Faisal, the Viceroy of Hejaz, in 1928.

The prince did not want to promote idolatry, and in 1975, it was sealed with concrete by religious authorities. Nevertheless, the tomb is roughly 130m long, three metres wide, and six metres high before it was neglected to prevent idolatry. The tomb even finds mention in the original translations of the Book of One Thousand Nights and A Night.

2. Thee (Zee) Ain Ancient Village, Bidah Valley, Saudi Arabia

This historic village located in the Bidah Valley in Western Saudi Arabia is nothing short of an ancient paradise. The polished stone houses surrounded by mountains on three sides have remained mainly the same since the village was settled in the 8th century CE.

It had witnessed many a tribal battle in its time before King Abdul Aziz unified the Kingdom, and this makes it one of the only UNESCO World Heritage Sites on this list. This heritage village, named after a water spring that flows from the nearby mountains, is one of the best tourist places in Saudi Arabia.

Famous for its crops like bananas, Kadi, basil, lemon and palm, the Zee Ain village comprises 49 houses built on the Medamik wall system. Of these 49 houses, nine have only one floor, 19 have two floors, 11 have three floors, and 10 have four floors.

3. Dune Bashing in Qasim, Saudi Arabia

If Dune bashing Safari is not on your list of Arabian adventures to be had, perhaps you need a new list. Dune Bashing is a thrilling experience across the desert sands abundant in the region.

This is your chance to hop into a 4×4 and combine off-road mud and hill driving with a course guide. So sit back and enjoy your dandy (sandy) ride! It certainly is one of the top adventurous activities to do in the desert.

A winter sand dunes bashing adventure involves combing the 4×4 action with a bit of camping to embrace the tradition of Kashta. First, go camel riding, then sleep amongst the dunes under the soft glow of the winter starlight. Then, wake up to a nice cup of Arabic coffee to go sandboarding and dune bashing!

4. The Al Wahbah Salt Crater, Saudi Arabia

Did watching the ‘Silent Sea’ on Netflix make you yearn to visit the moon? Was ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ your go-to when you needed to feel some comfort? Well, the Al Wahbah crater is the spot to visit if you have a penchant for space adventures without leaving Earth. The crater makes the list of famous places in Saudi Arabia due to its lunar resemblance.

About 250 kilometres away from Ta’if, Al Wahbah is a volcanic salt crater about 780m deep and 6.9km in diameter. Al Wahbah is a maar crater formed due to volcanic activity underground (think magma meets subterranean water and cause a gigantic steam explosion) and is covered with white Sodium phosphate crystals at the bottom.

The local story of its creation is the stuff of legends. Before the crater, there used to be two mountains, Tamia and Cotton. One night, illuminated by a lightning flash, Cotton looked so beautiful that Tamia was instantly in love. She vowed to uproot herself in pursuit of her beloved, but before she could, her cousin Shelman struck her with an arrow. Where she fell, the crater was formed.

5. The Edge of the World – Jebel Fihrayn, Saudi Arabia

Think of the scene from ‘Pride and Prejudice’ when Lizzie Bennet stands at the edge of a cliff, contemplating her life. The ‘Edge of the World’ is the Saudi equivalent for your contemplations with a view of luscious golden desert sands.

This geological wonder is located in the northwest of Riyadh, the capital city, and is surrounded by the rocky desert. The view from the edge is what gives this location its name. Standing on the cliff gives you an uninterrupted view of the horizon. Visiting the ‘Edge of the World’ definitely tops Riyadh’s list of things to do as it is one of the top attractions in Saudi Arabia.

Of course, the way to get to Jebel Fihrayn is via SUVs and careful driving. But once you’re at the edge of the world, lifetime contemplations will come to you organically.

6. Mada’In Saleh – Al Hijr, Saudi Arabia

Situated close to Al ula in the Medina Province is Mada’In Saleh, a city of ancient tombs carved into Sandstone. Mada’In Saleh was historically known as a Hegra by the Nabataean People, who carved these tombs – an archaeologists delight.

The community began as pastoral nomads who practiced oasis architecture and are believed to have come from the Hejaz region of northwest Saudi Arabia. The second UNESCO world heritage site on this list, Mada’In Saleh, consists of 131 monumental rock-cut tombs – ancient treasures of a world gone by.

The lesser-known cousin of Petra consists of tombs that are all finely carved facades with uniform styles. The tombs are also littered with various inscriptions that are the gateway to modern knowledge about Hegra. These silent historical artifacts and Al Ula earn Saudi Arabia points as a major tourist destination for history buffs.

7. Outdoor Activities in the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

The Saudi government only completely opened its doors to foreign tourists in 2019. This means that the Saudi coastline along the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf coast is mainly uncharted for the international travel community and, as such, offers a wide variety of activities to do and new marine parks to explore.

Perhaps you could charter a boat at the Red Sea Marina. Go snorkelling or scuba-diving, maybe take a sunset cruise over the weekend to the middle of the sea. Really, the entire Red Sea is your oyster. You could even go seaside camping (with permission from the coastguard, of course) or kitesurf at beaches in Jeddah.

But the true spot on this list belongs to the deep-sea diving experiences in the Red Sea. Visit the underwater landmarks of Saudi. The first is at Abu Galawa, to witness the unexplored Galawa reefs. Here you can see schools of Barracuda and even have the odd encounter with hammerhead or tiger sharks.

8. The King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival, Saudi Arabia

Falconry refers to the hunting of wild animals utilizing trained birds of prey. It is a sport practised in many middle-eastern countries, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is no exception.

The King Abdulaziz Festival of Falconry is an annual international festival organized by the Saudi Falcons Club. Participants at the festival include falcon owners from the Kingdome and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

It makes our list of the things to do in Saudi because of its cultural and international significance. This is the world’s largest falconry festival organized to promote and preserve Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage.

9. Al Balad, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Al Balad is the centre of the historic city of Jeddah. The entire area of the old town is a UNESCO world heritage site, owing to its presence since the 7th century. From gorgeous mosques to traditional and historical houses, Al Balad is a living homage to Jeddah’s history .

The city is divided into various districts. The Al-Nassif House and the Al-Jamjoom House are some of the city’s most famous and oldest buildings. This trip down memory lane is one of the oldest and best landmarks of Saudi Arabia.

The old city is home to 600 heritage buildings nearly 500 years old, with more than 30 mosques and five souks – the shopping malls of yester years. Give yourself the chance to immerse in this gorgeous and colourful adventure as you venture through the narrow lanes, multi-storied mud-brick houses and stone buildings.

10. The Judah Thumb and the Yellow Lake, Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia

The Devil’s Thumb or the Judah thumb is an exquisite rock formation that stands alone in the An Nafud region of the Arabian Desert. It is located about 160km from Dhahran, close to Judah (the town). The rock sticks out like a sore thumb in the expansive desert.

The trip can easily be made with an SUV, and around the thumb are various escapements that you can visit while making your trip to be wowed by rock formations and caves. Maybe, if you’re someone who enjoys desert camps and the gorgeous night sky, you could even camp out at night.

The Yellow Lake is located on the outskirts of Al Ahsa city and is an important wetland shallow lake formed from the runoff from the 22,000 farms that surround the region. Although it is fed from the runoff, the lake is a historical landmark known for its wildlife with various plant species and visits from migratory birds twice a year.

Rent an SUV and drive down to the lake for a picnic with the free sides of birdwatching and exploring the hills that overlook the lake!

The Best Places to Visit in Saudi Arabia from an Expat

If you want to visit the best places in Saudi Arabia, you are in the right place.

Exploring Saudi Arabia as a tourist can be a fantastic experience full of surprises. Saudi Arabia has something to offer everyone from ancient archaeological sites to modern skyscrapers. With its diverse culture, stunning landscapes and fascinating culture, Saudi Arabia is a must-visit destination for any Muslim traveller or non-Muslim alike.

From the capital city of Riyadh to stunning beaches and deserts, the country has a wealth of attractions to explore. In this blog, we’ll explore some of the best places to visit in Saudi Arabia as a tourist with some suggestions from myself as an expat living part-time in the country. So, buckle up and get ready to explore!

For years the country was closed to tourists, and there was a lot of mystery surrounding it. Since 2019 the Saudi government introduced a tourist visa, and now it is much easier to visit this beautiful country full of contradictions.

Even as a Muslim traveller on an Umrah visa previously, you were only allowed to go to Makkah and Medinah and not explore some of the many natural attractions scattered around this vast country.

what to visit in Jeddah the fountain

Overview of Saudi Arabia as a Tourist Destination

As mentioned above, Saudi opened its borders to tourists in 2018, and since there, it has been pretty easy to get a tourist visa and visit the country.

Millions of Muslims visit every year the two holy cities of Makkah and Medinah, but in reality, nobody really explores beyond those two, and there is so much to see.

I have a full article on how to issue a tourist visa for Saudi Arabia here, but it is a pretty standard procedure, and it costs £120 for a one-year multi-entry visa.

Is Saudi Arabia Safe for Tourists?

The answer to this question is yes!

Despite its reputation, Saudi Arabia is actually a safe and friendly country for visitors. With the kingdom opening up to foreign visitors, there has been an increasing number of tourists arriving in the Kingdom.

When it comes to safety, Saudi Arabia has a reputation for being a safe country for travellers. The country has invested heavily in its infrastructure and security systems, and crime is generally low. Furthermore, the government works hard to protect tourists and ensure that they have a safe and enjoyable experience in the country.

The country also offers a wide range of activities for tourists, from visiting ancient sites to exploring the rugged desert. There are plenty of attractions to keep travellers busy, including archaeological sites, ancient cities, and stunning beaches on the Red Sea.

You can find a lot of information about Saudi and places to visit on their official tourism website.

Can women visit Saudi Arabia alone?

Yes, as a solo female, you can issue your own visa and travel to the country alone. Female travellers are safe in Saudi with standard travel precautions.

You will generally need to dress modestly, but you don’t have to cover your head or even wear the traditional abaya in places like Jeddah or Riyadh. If you want to feel more comfortable and blend in, sure, you can wear one but many times I wear jeans or even a maxi dress.

Over the years, some parts of Saudi like Jeddah and the capital, have modernised, and you can see some women even wearing short sleeves.

women dress code for tourist in saudi arabia

Local women will still wear abaya and sheila (the head cover), but sometimes it is more cultural than religious.

Overall, Saudi Arabia is a great destination for anyone looking to experience authentic culture and breathtaking landscapes.

Best time to visit Saudi Arabia

The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is from October to March, when the weather is mild and sunny. During this time of year, temperatures are usually between 15-20 degrees Celsius during the day and cool nights.

However, Saudi is a vast country, so different places within the Kingdom will have different temperatures. So keep this in mind and pack a light jacket as well.

Riyadh has warm days and cold nights since it is in the desert, where temperatures drop, and Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast, has a milder climate.

Rainfall happens in this region, especially in November and December, and the thunderstorms can be heavy, but they don’t last longer than a couple of days. I have to say that the thunder and lightning are some of the heaviest I have experienced.

This season also sees some festivals, such as the National Day celebrations in September as well as Al Ula and Riyadh Seasons in December and January. There are concerts, festivals, activities and so much you can do in the cities. Visiting during this time can be a great way to experience unique cultural events while exploring.

The currency of Saudi Arabia is Saudi Riyal, which is about £1 for 4.56SAR / $1 for 3.46SAR. In general, Saudi is an expensive country, but you can also explore on a budget. Personally, I believe it is similar prices to London if you want to experience dining out and activities.

You can, of course, dine for much cheaper and opt for buses rather than trains or planes.

Top Places to Visit in Saudi Arabia

1 the red sea coast of saudi arabia.

Places to Visit in Saudi Arabia- the red sea

The Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia is one of the most beautiful places in the world. With its crystal clear waters, pristine coral reefs, and unique wildlife, it is a paradise for beachgoers and divers alike. This area is also known for its rich cultural heritage, and its ancient cities, such as Jeddah, are steeped in history.

For those looking to explore the Red Sea coast, there are plenty of activities to choose from. From snorkelling and diving to swimming and windsurfing, the vast array of activities and experiences makes it an ideal destination for families and groups.

The waters of the Red Sea are home to an incredible variety of marine life. From colourful reef fish to giant sea turtles and even sharks, the marine life here is truly spectacular. The coral reefs are also home to various fish, coral formations, and colourful reef creatures. Even if you don’t want to get in the water, the sights and sounds of the underwater world can be enjoyed from the shore.

King Abdullah Economic City offers a great option for Muslims who want to explore some of Saudi but stay close to Jeddah and Makkah. It is only 30min from Jeddah, and you can even have a stopover with the Haramain train after Umrah on the way to Medinah.

2 Riyadh-the capital of the Kingdom

Cities and places to visit as a tourist in Saudi arabia - RIyadh

There are many places to visit in Riyadh that offer an exciting mix of history and culture. The Masmak Fortress is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Riyadh, as it was once the site of a historic battle.

The National Museum is another must-see with its vast collection of artefacts from around the region. Other popular sites include Al Faisaliah Tower, Murabba Palace, and Diriyah.

Diriyah is a historic district located on the northwestern outskirts of Riyadh. It was once the home of the Saudi royal family and is now a popular tourist destination. Diriyah is home to some of the oldest buildings in Riyadh, including the 19th century Mudéjar-style buildings of Al-Turaif, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of the most popular attractions in the area is the Edge of the World, a stark and majestic cliff face in the middle of the desert. Located near Riyadh, about an hour out, the Edge of the World is an awe-inspiring natural formation that stands nearly three-hundred meters tall.

The nearby Red Sand Dunes are a popular destination for visitors exploring the desert terrain. Rising over twenty meters high, the red sand dunes provide a stunning backdrop for visitors exploring the area. Visitors can trek around the dunes and take in the breathtaking views or take a camel ride and experience the desert in a whole new way.

If you visit in December, you will also enjoy the Riyadh season with many activities and concerts as well.

The Best Places to Visit in Saudi Arabia from an Expat

As one of the oldest cities in the Middle East, Jeddah is a city steeped in history. It was the commercial hub for centuries connecting the world to the Kingdom via the Red Sea. The city’s rich culture, vibrant art and architecture, and stunning coastline make it a popular tourist destination. The city has always been a little more progressive than the rest of the c country since it is a crossroad for pilgrims as well.

I live in Jeddah, and I do love the cultural mix of it all.

For Muslims visiting for Umrah, I would highly recommend exploring the city after you have finished and enjoying some tourist activities.

First, a visit to the Jeddah Corniche is a must. This stunning waterfront promenade winds its way along the Red Sea, offering spectacular views of the city’s skyline. There are so many cafes, restaurants and playgrounds along the coast for families to enjoy.

The Floating Mosque, also known as Masjid Al Rahmah, this mosque sits atop a wooden platform floating on a lagoon in Jeddah’s northern shoreline.

Check out my Instagram for more on these.

You must visit the old city of Jeddah, the Al Balat area. This historic district dates back to the 7th century and is home to many ancient sites, including the Al-Alawi Mosque and Old Jeddah Wall.

When in the area, check out the Nasseef House, Built-in 1881 by Abdulrahman bin Nasseef al-Rabeea; this palace is a popular tourist destination due to its unique architecture featuring traditional Arabian designs like mashrabiyas (wooden latticework windows) and intricate woodwork carvings on its doors and ceilings.

Also, you should visit the Al Tayebat International City; this museum houses over 6,000 manuscripts worldwide, ranging from ancient Greek texts to modern works written in different languages such as Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Chinese and more.

King Fahd’s Fountain (also known as the Jeddah Fountain). Located in the Red Sea, this fountain is one of the tallest fountains in the world and can shoot water up to 853 feet into the air. You can enjoy the fountain from the Park Hyatt Hotel as it has a nice coffee shop with a view and lovely sunset.

The Floating Mosque Also known as Masjid Al Rahmah, this mosque sits atop a wooden platform floating on a lagoon in Jeddah’s northern shoreline.

Fakieh Aquarium has over 150 different species of marine life, including sharks and dolphins. It is not the biggest one in the world, but my daughter enjoyed exploring it.

4. Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia

visiti the eastern province in saudi dammam

The Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia has diverse landscapes and cultures. From the lush Al-Ahsa Oasis to the bustling city of Dammam, the Eastern Province offers visitors a wealth of attractions and activities. It is also home to Aramco the largest producer of oil. The whole of Al Khobar city is pretty much built for this. If you are ever in this region of Saudi Arabia which I personally love, here are some of the things you cannot miss.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture – Ithra. Ithra is an educational and cultural centre in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The centre was founded in 2017 by Saudi Aramco and included a range of features such as the Ithra Museum, Planetarium, Library, Auditorium, Cultural Center and Creative Hub.

We spent several hours there, and we also loved the children’s museum for the little ones.

Saudi Arabia has many beautiful places, but one of my favourites is the Al-Ahsa Oasis, one of the world’s largest oases, stretching over 10,000 square kilometres. It is also a Unesco heritage site. The oasis is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, reptiles, and mammals. Visitors can explore the oasis by boat, car, or horseback and enjoy the lush landscape, lush vegetation, and unique wildlife. The oasis also offers a variety of activities, such as sandboarding, falconry, camel riding, and more.

visit al qara mountain in the eastern province as a toursit in saudi arabia

Another very popular landmark located in the Eastern part of Saudi is the Al Qarah mountain. This beautiful natural wonder is located in the region of Al-Hofuf. It is often referred to as the ‘Garden of Eden’ due to its lush vegetation, stunning views and wildlife.

You can rent a car from Dammam, and you can drive yourself to the area as there are many other places to see along the way. It is only about 200km from Dammam and a pretty straight road. We did this as a day trip, but if I was to ever go back, I would take my time and explore more.

Also, if you are staying in Al Khobar, check out my review of the Hyatt Hotel, which offers an amazing women-only spa with a play area inside.

5. Al Ula and Mada’in Saleh

Al Ula is the jewel of the Kingdom and one of the famous attractions in Saudi Arabia. It is one of the best tourist places to visit in the Kingdom, and it is pretty much on every promotional brochure. It is home to many historical sites in the area and definitely worth a visit on your trip to Saudi Arabia.

Al Ula is best explored during the winter when the temperature is mild and the days are long. The weather is perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities from December to March. During this time, visitors can enjoy a variety of cultural and natural attractions, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ula Old Town, Mada’in Saleh and Al Ula National Park.

December to January is also the time of Al Ula season, a new initiative festival that offers concerts and events in the area.

The Best Places to Visit in Saudi Arabia al Ula

Al Ula is a historical landmark and has been a crossroads of civilizations since ancient times. This city was once a major stop along the spice route, and it was also one of the most important cities of the Nabatean Kingdom.

Al Ula National Park is located on the northwest side of Al Ula and covers an area of over 100 square kilometres. This natural reserve is home to various plant and animal species, making it a great place to explore nature. Visitors can participate in various activities, including birdwatching, hiking and camping, or simply enjoy the stunning scenery.

There is so much to see and do in Al Ula. Whether you’re looking to explore the region’s rich cultural heritage or relax and enjoy the beauty of nature,

Mada’in Saleh is an archaeological site located about 21 kilometres from Al Ula. This ancient city is a part of the Hejaz Region of Saudi Arabia and was an important stop along the spice route. Visitors to Mada’in Saleh can explore the ruins of tombs, temples and monuments that date back to the Nabatean era. The city is also home to many stunning rock-cut structures, including tombs and temples carved into the rock face.

Taif is a city in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia known for its moderate climate and stunning views.

There are many things to do in Taif that will give you an insight into its rich history and culture. Visiting the al-Hada Mountains, which are some of the oldest mountains in the region.

You can also visit the old town of Rijal Alma, where you can find traditional architecture and explore its streets and souqs. You can take a cable car ride from Taif to Al-Shafa, which offers incredible views of the city below.

Make sure you visit Taif Fort, the fort is a great example of Taif’s rich history. Built-in the 18th century, this fort is the symbol of the city and was constructed to protect the city from invaders. Take a stroll through the fort and explore its walls and towers.

Also, the 20th-century-old Shubra palace in the old centre of Taif. It was built in the early 1900s by Sheikh Mohammed bin Saad Al-Shurbai, who wanted to create a grand residence for himself and his family. The palace features Islamic architecture with decorative elements such as arches and domes. Inside, there are several courtyards and a large central hall with a fountain. The palace is currently owned by the Saudi Royal Family and is used as an occasional royal residence. It is open to visitors and often hosts special events such as weddings.

If you are visiting during April, check out the Taif Rose Festival celebrating the city’s famous rose production. Local vendors sell rose-scented products, while folk music and dance performances liven up the festival.

If you want to enjoy a walk among nature of sorts in the desert, check out the King Fahd Garden, this beautiful botanical garden is home to a variety of exotic plants, trees, and flowers. It’s a great place to relax and take in the sights and sounds of nature.

What is the Most Visited Place in Saudi Arabia?

places to visit in saudi arabia - makkah

Without a doubt, the most visited place and popular in Saudi Arabia is the city of Makkah and then Medinah due to the pilgrim. It is the holiest city for Muslims.

As a Muslim of course, you can visit the city, and I strongly recommend exploring some of the other options I have suggested here as there is so many places around you can visit after Umrah,

Unfortunately for non-Muslims, you cannot visit Makkah; there are security and checkpoints that check if you are Muslim or not. Could you sneak in? Probably but honestly, there is nothing to see unless you know what to look for, and although the buildings are impressive, I wouldn’t want to get caught.

You can visit Medinah but not the Haram area, which is where the mosque is located.

In conclusion, Saudi Arabia offers tourists a plethora of places to explore and enjoy. From the bustling capital city of Riyadh to the beautiful desert oases of Al-Ula and the majestic mountain landscapes of Abha, there is something for everyone in this captivating country.

Whether you prefer historic monuments, spectacular landscapes, or the peace and tranquillity of rural villages, Saudi Arabia has something to appeal to all. With so many remarkable destinations to visit in Saudi Arabia, it is sure to be an unforgettable experience for all.

Here’s What You Need to Know Before Visiting Saudi Arabia

For the first time in its history, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced that will be opening its doors for tourism by issuing an electronic visa for visitors coming from 49 countries — including the United States.

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for an eVisa . It costs approximately $120 and is valid for a period of one year with an option for multiple entry, and permits a maximum stay of 90 days in the country. Previously, the Kingdom issued only visitor visas for religious pilgrimage and business visas. This monumental announcement is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s reform program, Vision 2030 , which aims to reduce the country’s reliance on oil and diversify its economy by way of tourism and entertainment.

Over the past two years, the government has also announced the launch of several ambitious projects, including an entertainment mega-city in Riyadh (reportedly, twice the size of Orlando’s Disney World ), a futuristic beach destination along the coast of the Red Sea, and restoration of UNESCO World Heritage sites. By 2030, the government expects 100 million annual visits, increased foreign and domestic investment in hotels and associated amenities, the creation of million jobs, and an increase in tourism revenue from the current 3% to 10% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, according to Reuters.

To attract Western tourists and market itself as a tourist destination — on par with neighboring Gulf states— Saudi Arabia has eased some of its conservative restrictions, like granting women rights to drive and travel without a guardian, curbing the powers of the moral police, permitting unmarried tourist couples to rent hotel rooms, and relaxing dress codes.

Within the first 10 days of the introduction of the eVisa 24,000 visitors entered the Kingdom, according to Arab News . Although there is a lack of adequate tourism infrastructure, those curious to learn about and experience the country will find Saudi’s natural landscape and its welcoming locals incentive enough to visit.

If you find yourself heading to Saudi Arabia to explore the land uncharted to tourists, here are a few basic and cultural tips for first-time travelers to the Kingdom.

With this news, people are asking: Is Saudi Arabia Safe for tourists? Yes, Saudi Arabia is safe for tourists. As with travel to any other country in the world, be respectful of local rules and customs, be mindful of your surroundings, and carry out due diligence before traveling. Be sure to consult travel advisories before your trip.

Public spaces

Public spaces may be segregated, and you will find separate entrances or seating areas for men and women. Refrain from public displays of affection.

Seek permission before photographing locals. Under the public code of conduct , it is a punishable offense. Other offenses include vandalism of public property, playing music during prayer times, and dress code violations.

Female tourists are not required to wear the abaya (a cloak, previously mandated by the government). However, both men and women should dress modestly, avoiding tight fitting and revealing clothes in public. The official Visit Saudi tourism website provides further details on what this entails.

Stores and restaurants close during prayer times, five times a day. To make the most of your trip, plan your itinerary according to these times.

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country. While non-Muslims are welcome and permitted to practice their religion in private spaces, preaching in public forums or on social media platforms is prohibited. Malicious propaganda against the country, government, and religion is a severe offense.

The sale, purchase or consumption of alcohol and drugs is illegal in the country.

Social customs

You will find locals to be hospitable, generous, and as equally curious about you as you may be about them. It is not uncommon to be invited to share a meal or a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee) and dates. Your hosts — and even strangers — will want to extend their welcome and offer a token of their hospitality, like food or even a small gift. It is considered rude to refuse such an offering. Just remember, always accept and consume food and beverages with your right hand.

If you are invited into a Saudi house, remove your shoes, unless your host insists you keep them on. In a traditional Majlis, (a sitting hall with floor cushions) you are expected to sit on the floor. If hosted elsewhere, you can expect a modern setup with armchairs and other furniture.

Saudis encourage and welcome Westerners asking questions about their culture. To avoid offending local sensibilities, it's best to steer clear of political or religious topics of conversation.

Familiarizing yourself with Saudi rituals like greetings and handshakes will always make a favorable impression with your hosts. “Marhaban!” (Welcome) is a common way of greeting and you may respond with “Marhabtain” (I give you two welcomes).

Men shouldn’t extend a handshake to a Saudi woman, unless she does so first. To err on the side of caution, place your hand over your heart and greet with a hello.

Saudi Arabia seeks to become global travel destination

S audi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, is seeking to establish itself as a global travel destination and strengthen tourism ties with Korea as part of its economic transformation objectives.

Saudi Arabia’s travel and tourism sector plays a major part in Vision 2030 and since 2020, the kingdom has endeavored to achieve the goal of attracting 100 million visitors. However, the country has already attained the milestone last year, seven years earlier than expected, and it is now working towards bigger goals, according to the Saudi government.

The remarks came as part of The Korea Times Global Business Club, which featured local experts and diplomatic officials from Saudi Arabia and took place at the Korea Press Center in central Seoul.

Korean government officials, the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Korea Sami M. Alsadhan, Middle East experts and Korea Times President-Publisher Oh Young-jin attended the event to discuss Saudi Arabia’s construction of NEOM smart city and the economic cooperation between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 is a government project overseen by the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, aiming to diversify the economy and lower the kingdom's reliance on oil revenue.

Home to six UNESCO World Heritage sites and over 10,000 unearthed archaeological sites, the kingdom has already witnessed over 93.5 million visits and a total tourism spend of 185 billion Saudi riyals ($49.3 billion) in 2022, according to the Saudi Tourism Authority (STA).

Saudi Arabia's tourism sector is expected to grow at an average of 11 percent annually over the next decade, making it the fastest-growing travel and tourism industry in the Middle East, according to the forecast from the World Travel and Tourism Council's Economic Impact Report from 2022.

This annual growth, more than six times the 1.8 percent growth rate of the kingdom's overall economy, will bolster Saudi Arabia's overall economy, create 1.4 million jobs and make a $169.3 billion contribution to the country's GDP, presenting 17.1 percent of the total economy, the council projected.

Since August 2022, Saudi Arabia's national carrier, Saudia, has been operating direct flights to Riyadh and Jeddah twice a week, respectively, from Incheon International Airport.

Notably, Saudi Arabia operates an e-visa program for individual travelers from Korea and 50 other countries, in which passengers traveling via Saudia or any other Saudi Arabian airlines, can get a maximum 96-hour stopover visa for the kingdom and receive a free one-night stay at a hotel, the STA explained.

The kingdom boasts a mix of rich ancient heritage, breathtaking landscapes and dynamic cultural scenes in major cities, including Riyadh, Jeddah and Diriyah, the STA said.

Also, the Red Sea Project, one of the four giga projects by the Saudi government, will feature a 28,000-kilometer square-sized mega ecotourism destination powered 100 percent by renewable energy, accommodating 50 hotels, 8,000 rooms and up to 1,000 residential properties.

Saudi Tourism CEO: Lionel Messi Ad Campaign Targets Traveler ‘Preconceptions’

Dawit Habtemariam

Dawit Habtemariam , Skift

March 11th, 2024 at 2:58 PM EDT

Saudi Arabia is trying to change the negative perceptions held by some international tourists.

Dawit Habtemariam

In Saudi Arabia’s latest tourism campaign , Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi aims to bust the stereotypes global travelers may have about the kingdom. The campaign emphasizes that Saudi Arabia has a lot to offer and is a welcoming destination, said Fahd Hamidaddin , CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority .

Saudi has been hyperfocused on cutting its dependence on oil and diversifying its economy. Over the next 10 years, the country plans to invest $1 trillion in its tourism sector and wants to become a global tourist destination.

Hamidaddin spoke with Skift at the ITB Berlin travel trade show last week about growth from European travelers, how the $25 million Messi marketing campaign performed, the kingdom’s dependence on tour operators, and more.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Growth in Tourism to Saudi Arabia

Skift: How much has tourism to Saudi grown over the last few years? How much has it grown from Europe?

Hamidaddin: In the grand scheme of things, Saudi is simply growing in all markets, all its new destinations. And we’re not starting from scratch. Saudi Arabia receives a lot of inbound travelers for religious travel to Mecca and Medina, so we’re starting on a high base. We have a lot of inbound for business travel. We have a lot of inbound for visits, friends and family.

With a very high base, going at the highest speed of growth five years in a row, that’s definitely a good testament.

We had set a target of a hundred million visits by 2030. Thankfully, we exceeded that a lot earlier. Now we have a new target, 150 million by 2030 . [ Saudi Arabia’s tourism minister has previously said that would break down as 80 million domestic travelers and 70 million from international destinations.

From Europe, we grew by 67% last year. [Saudi welcomed over 1 million European travelers, officials told Skift. About 775,000 visitors came for leisure.]

Last year, we launched around 20 routes [by air]. This year we’re launching an additional 10 routes to Europe.

Our destinations are opening one resort after the other on a weekly basis. There’s a new opening every week in different cities in Saudi. So we are very bullish when it comes to investment.

And we can’t be but bullish in generating demand, meaning, if you’re doing all the supply and you’re investing $800 billion in creating, offering and developing destinations, you want to make sure you equally invest in demand.

The Lionel Messi Campaign

Skift: Saudi Arabia recently launched a “Go Beyond What You Think” tourism campaign featuring Lionel Messi. What struck me was how explicit the campaign was. Messi literally kicked the ball at some criticisms I’ve heard about Saudi Arabia.

Hamidaddin: It’s true. Mark Twain said travel is fatal for prejudice, and that was the starting point. And we talked to UN tourism, and they launched the Tourism Opens Minds campaign. We wanted to collaborate and do the same.

This is a conversation that the world needs. It’s not just Saudi. Prejudice and preconceptions are available about so many destinations. Promoting new destinations immediately comes with certain perceptions.

Saudi launched this campaign and audiences liked it. While the finer results have not been measured, the initial readings tell us that this has performed better than all the campaigns that we formed. We’ve launched nearly 10. People watched that campaign to the end. The view-to-completion rate was 40% higher than the best other campaign that we did.

There will be new campaigns and new stars, new stars because every day we get a new star moving into Saudi. Messi did not move, but others did. Let’s hear from the insiders that actually made it.

Skift: How does the Lionel Messi ad fit into your overall marketing strategy?

Hamidaddin: We need to make sure that people are aware, excited about our offering, and comforted about what the reality is about Saudi.

All those preconceptions that people may have had, such as that maybe women wouldn’t feel safe being alone. We can respond by noting, for example, InsureMyTrip’s index, which comes out of India, rated the safety of destinations for all their travelers and trade partners. They included Saudi in their index last year, and we scored in one of our cities, the safest city for women, for women alone after midnight.

We’ve been telling the world that this is the home of the Arabian Wonders, from UNESCO heritage sites to civilizations that have passed through this land.

We’re also building a lot of activations and events like no other place in the world. Last year, we had 11,000 events executed.

We are launching our prime offering on the Red Sea. “Sun and sea” is one of the biggest attraction magnets for Europe, and Saudi is going big on that now, but it’s no longer talk. It’s a reality. Red Sea Global launched the St. Regis Resort, the Six Senses Resort, and another Ritz-Carlton is opening. Next year, we’re expecting eight more resorts. Sindalah in NEOM is launching its first island. It’s going to be second to none.

How to Attract U.S. Travelers

Skift: What do you think will have the biggest draw on travel from the U.S.?

Hamidaddin: The longer the distance, the more segmented you need to be.

People usually fly long distances for sun and sea, especially romantic getaways or cultural exploration. Arabia has a lot of mystique.

Disney is a machine that has been talking about Aladdin and the land of Arabia, and this land is here. Lawrence Arabia came as a movie. And so Arabia does land with a positive intrigue and mystic appeal to the American segments.

And we’ve been seeing interest, especially amongst luxury travelers and cultural travelers. With our sun and sea offering expanding, I will see “sun and sea” becoming probably one of our biggest drivers of travel from the U.S.

The Importance of Travel Partners

Skift: What are you doing to bring in international tour operators?

Hamidaddin: We could not have grown without our travel partners. Usually, new destinations rely heavily on travel partners because, until a destination is very well known and people recommend it to one another, people won’t necessarily just book and jump. They need their tours to be pre-planned and arranged with travel agencies and groups.

We develop itineraries, and most of our business in new developing markets like Europe, America, and Asia are happening through our partners.

Our partners have different segments. Some are individual travelers, and some are group travelers.  This year for the first time,  we launched our transportation map, which takes connectivity to the next level. It’s air connectivity, it’s ground transport for groups and individuals. And we are introducing our solutions and our partners on transportation for our travel agents around the world because there is high demand now for groups.

For example, we just partnered with a company called Shift Transit . Shift, has an asset pool of vehicles that they provide all the destination management companies [DMCs] in terms of buses, minivans, small vehicles, four-by-fours, you name it, just to supply the DMCs that don’t have these assets at any point in time to cater for their travelers, be it individuals, families, or groups.

Sports and Music as Growth Drivers

Skift: Shed some color on your festival and event calendar.

Hamidaddin: We’re looking at sports as a socioeconomic engine from opportunities to wealth to a sector that would become an engine of growth for the country. Everything is coming from a massive strategic direction to unlock the opportunities and the jobs and the careers and definitely the economic stimulation.

Sports are expected to contribute 1.5% to our total GDP. And so it’s serious, especially in a country that has always been dependent on oil. 1.5% is significant. Now, with that comes a development of clubs hosting international events, and we’ve put a bid for the World Cup, and fingers crossed, we’ll win it.

We had the Formula One Grand Prix. Two months ago, we launched with Rafael Nadal the Nadal Tennis Academy to drive aspiration to this sector. We’ve been hosting a lot of boxing. Matches never done anywhere in the world are now taking place in Saudi. NEOM is now developing our ski destination and has already been granted the right to host the Asian Winter Games in ’29.

So for golf, we had the LIV Golf and the partnership with the PGA tour. That aggressive commitment that we have put to passion players in the space of golf tells you that this is not random.

We are very proud of our original music and folklore dance, and we are investing heavily in reviving that. We’re hosting international concerts and music associations and institutes to come and perform. Today in ITB, we brought the first Saudi women female dance groups.

We pair Saudi orchestras with other international orchestras, or we simply invite international DJs and we mix them with local talents on the rise. The largest EDM music festival, the MDLBeast , similar to TomorrowLand .

SoundStorm is the largest EDM festival that happens in the world when it comes to numbers. Last year we had 630,000 attendees. It’s a city, and it’s a festival that runs for three days in a row.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

The world’s most ‘overrated’ tourist attraction is in the UK

author image

A compilation of attractions including Stonehenge

From sprawling green parks to Royal palaces, the UK has a lot to offer the almost 40 million tourists that visit each year.

However, it’s also home to the world’s most ‘overrated’ tourist attraction – and it’s not in London . Any guesses?

Sadly, it’s Stonehenge.

The survey, conducted by Rough Guides, saw visitors overwhelmingly reject this glorified pile of stones in Wiltshire , despite its historic roots.

The road that runs next to this monument is famous for its traffic queues as, inevitably, many drivers slow down to get a good look at this ancient site.

But despite its very public position, Stonehenge comes with a price-tag.

Stonehenge

Members go free, but an adult ticket costs a whopping £23 with donation and £20.90 without. It’s no wonder people choose to save their pennies and drive past instead.

As such, one Tripadvisor review has labelled it ‘over-commercialised.’

‘As an associate member the visit was free, otherwise a lot to pay just to get up closer to see the stones,’ one person with the username BSBDRB wrote.

Elsewhere, another visitor described it as a ‘disappointing exhibition for young children.’

Yvonne G took her two grandchildren to Stonehenge during half term so that they could join in with some of the activities advertised, but both she and her family were sorely disheartened.

‘The exhibition area is devoid of any interaction, with the exception of being able to see how many people it will take to pull a stone,’ she penned.

A tourist taking a selfie at Stonehenge

The world’s top ‘hidden gem tourist attraction’ is in London

Did you know that the world’s top ‘hidden gem tourist attraction’ is actually in London?

In a hidden gems list pulled together by airline Wizz Air, the Wallace Collection in Marylebone scooped the top spot.

For those not familiar with the art gallery, it’s home to a whole host of wonderful art and artefacts including paintings, sculpture, ceramics and furniture. Inside, you’ll find everything from eighteenth-century French paintings to Renaissance objects.

However, not everyone who visits Stonehenge has a bad word to say about it. In fact, it’s a cherished place for many, and has been for thousands of years.

‘Was a little sceptical about coming here since it was a little out of the way and a “pile of rocks,”’ KrissNicole wrote.

‘I was so wrong. 110% would recommend coming here and I would love to visit again.’

Each year, thousands flock to Stonehenge to celebrate the summer solstice, AKA the longest day of the year with over 16 hours of daylight.

An aerial view of Stonehenge at sunrise

Many camp overnight to catch the sun rising above the stones, with the thousands-strong crowd cheering and dancing as it comes in.

The tradition of pilgrimaging to Stonehenge dates back thousands of years when, it’s believed, Neolithic people created it as a temple aligned with the sun.

It was built between 3,000 BC and 1,6000 BC and for the first hundred years, it was actually used as a cremation cemetery.

The stones were set up and re-arranged in the following years, and whilst its exact purpose is still a mystery, because of the alignment of the stones on winter and summer solstice it is believed people also used to gather at the site during these days.

Elsewhere, Stonehenge is particularly significant for pagans, who celebrate ‘Litha’ on the same day as the summer solstice, which represents the battle between the ruling kings of summer and winter.

So, has Stonehenge been unjustly written off as an overpriced pile of stones? Perhaps – but there’s no denying its fascinating history.

The world’s top 10 most overrated tourist attractions, according to Rough Guides

  • Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England
  • Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
  • Central Park, New York City, USA
  • Niagara Falls, North America
  • Statue of Liberty, New York City, USA
  • Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
  • The Colosseum, Rome, Italy
  • Château de Versailles, Versailles, France
  • The Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA
  • The Louvre, Paris, France.
