Do not travel to:

  • Areas near the eastern and southern borders due to  terrorism and kidnapping .
  • Areas in the Sahara Desert due to  terrorism and kidnapping .

Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Algeria. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning and have recently targeted the Algerian security forces. Most attacks take place in rural areas, but attacks are possible in urban areas despite a heavy and active police presence.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens outside Algiers province due to Algerian government restrictions on travel by U.S. government employees.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Algeria.

If you decide to travel to Algeria:

  • Inform local police when visiting locations outside of major cities.
  • Travel by air if possible; remain on major highways if you must travel by road.
  • Travel with reputable travel agents who know the area.
  • Avoid staying overnight outside of the main cities and tourist locations.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the Embassy of Algeria website for the most current visa information.

Requirements for Entry:

  • Passport valid for at least six months

Passengers arriving via a cruise ship and who will be part of an organized shore excursion do not require a visa in advance. Passengers wishing to visit certain cities of the south may qualify for a visa on arrival if this is organized by an approved travel agency.  All other travelers must obtain a visa from an Algerian embassy or consulate in advance of travel. If you have Israeli entry stamps in your passport, you may experience difficulties.

Dual Nationality:  The Algerian government treats dual-national Algerian-Americans who enter Algeria on an Algerian passport solely as Algerian citizens. U.S. citizen women married to Algerians do not require the husband’s authorization to depart. Dual-national minor children exiting Algeria on an Algerian passport with just one parent will need to provide the Algerian family book (livret de famille) in order to demonstrate the relationship between the child and the accompanying parent.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Algeria.

Find information on dual nationality , prevention of international child abduction and customs regulations on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad.  Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds.  Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Terrorist Activity:  While Algeria has long been an important counterterrorism partner to the United States and has continued its aggressive campaign to eliminate all terrorist activity, active terrorist threats remain within Algeria and along its borders, in particular from the groups Al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreband Jund al-Khilafah in Algeria, which has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS).

Terrorist attacks usually target Algerian government interests and security forces outside of major cities and mainly in mountainous and remote areas, and attacks in 2020 and 2022 targeting Law Enforcement facilities were foiled but killed and injured security forces in the border regions of the southern wilayas of Bordj Badji Mokhtar and In Guezzam.

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against travel to remote areas in southern and eastern Algeria, due to a high threat of terrorist attacks and kidnapping. As noted in our  Travel Advisories for Algeria , U.S. citizens should:

  • avoid travel to rural areas within 50 km (31 miles) of the border with Tunisia and within 250 km (155 miles) of the borders with Libya, Niger, Mali, and Mauritania due to terrorist and criminal activities.
  • avoid overland travel across the Sahara. Travel to Saharan cities only by air.
  • remain on principal highways when traveling to coastal/mountainous areas east of Algiers and the mountains immediately south of Algiers.
  • always travel with reputable Algerian travel agents who know the area.
  • avoid staying overnight outside of the main cities and tourist locations.
  • inform local police when staying in locations outside of major cities.

Terrorist groups remain active throughout Algeria, though Algerian military operations over the past several years have been very successful in countering terrorist activity. Over the past five years, the government reported a total of 24 major attacks, though none were conducted in 2021. While these groups typically target Algerian security services and local government targets, they still aspire to target Western interests. AQIM, AQIM-allied groups and ISIS elements, including the Algerian affiliate locally known as Jund al-Khilafah in Algeria (JAK-A, or ISIS-Algeria), remain present, though they are assessed to have limited capabilities as a result of successful Algerian counterterrorism operations.

Three major attacks occurred throughout 2020. In February, assailants targeted an army outpost in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, near the border with Mali, with a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED). ISIS-Algeria claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed one Algerian soldier. In June, assailants ambushed an army patrol in Ain Defla, killing one, and an IED attack in Medea killed two soldiers one week later; AQIM claimed both attacks. Government sources reported nearly 250 counter-terrorism operations throughout the year which resulted in over 120 terrorists arrested or captured and over 200 hideouts discovered and destroyed. Almost all reported terrorist attacks in the past five years have targeted Algerian security forces and involved IEDs or ambush tactics as suspects actively fled through rural mountainous regions.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime:   The crime rate in Algeria is moderate. Algeria has a very visible police presence throughout the country, as well as many plain-clothes police officers. Petty theft and home burglary occur frequently in low income areas, and occasionally in affluent neighborhoods. Theft of contents and parts from parked cars, pick-pocketing, theft on trains and buses, theft of items left in hotel rooms, and purse snatching can occur. Only stay in hotels where adequate security is provided.

The U.S. Embassy has seen several cases in which American citizen women who meet an Algerian man online are lured to Algeria for marriage and are then held against their will in abusive situations.

Demonstrations  occur frequently.  They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Algeria.  Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters.  Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help.  Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Lucrative sales
  • Gold purchase
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers
  • Bank overpayments

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.  Report crimes to the local police and contact the U.S. Embassy at (213) 770-08-2000. The crime emergency lines in Algeria are 1548 and 17; for gendarmes, call 1055.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation   and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur.  Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field.  In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities.  First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance.  See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws.  If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Always carry your passport, or a copy of it, with you, or you may be taken in for questioning by law enforcement officials.
  • Photographing military installations and government buildings (often marked by an Algerian flag over the entrance) is prohibited.
  • Items that are legal to bring into and carry in the United States may not be legal in Algeria.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could land you immediately in jail.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law.  For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately.  See our webpage for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers: The law criminalizes so-called acts against nature and consensual same-sex sexual acts between adult men and women. The law stipulates penalties for so-called acts against nature that include imprisonment of six months to three years and a fine of DZD 1,000 to DZD 10,000 ($8 to $80). The law also stipulates penalties that include imprisonment of two months to two years and fines of DZD 500 to DZD 2,000 ($4 to $16) for anyone convicted of having committed a “homosexual act.” If a minor is involved, the adult may face up to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of DZD 10,000 ($80).

LGBTQI+ activists reported that the vague wording of laws criminalizing “homosexual acts” and so-called acts against nature permitted sweeping accusations that resulted in multiple arrests for consensual same-sex sexual relations, but there were no known prosecutions during the past year. LGBTQI+ status is not, criminalized; however, LGBTQI+ persons may face criminal prosecution under legal provisions disproportionately applied against LGBTQI+ individuals concerning prostitution, public indecency, and associating with bad characters. NGOs report that judges give harsher sentences to LGBTQI+ persons compared to non-LGBTQI+ persons.

See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in Algeria prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual and mental disabilities, and the law is enforced.  Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States.  Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.  There is a significant difference between large cities and the rest of the country.

Availability of rental, repair, replacement parts for aids/equipment/devices, or service providers, such as sign language interpreters or personal assistants is severely limited.

Students:  See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: Women walking along the streets in Algeria may experience sexual harassment from passing motorists and pedestrians.  See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

Travel within Algeria:  All employees of foreign companies or organizations based in Algeria who are not Algerian citizens must contact the Ministry of the Interior, Foreigners Office, before engaging in any travel within the interior of the country. The Ministry will notify local police of the planned travel and the police may choose to assign escorts for that travel.

Marriage in Algeria:  See our Marriage in Algeria page for documents that must be obtained before leaving the United States.

Disaster Preparedness:  Algeria is a seismically active country, with earthquakes regularly occurring throughout the country. Make contingency plans for your travel in Algeria and leave emergency contact information with family members outside of Algeria. General information about natural disaster preparedness is available from the  U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  and at  Ready.gov .

Currency:  Algeria is a cash society.  Most credit cards are not accepted on the economy outside of hotels. Travelers must declare upon entry at Customs if they are traveling with more than 3000 Algerian dinar or foreign currency that exceeds 1000 euros (or the equivalent). The amount of up to 7500 Euros (or equivalent in other foreign currency) can be taken out of the country. Proof that the money has been withdrawn form an Algerian bank account is required. According to Algerian Customs guidelines, foreign citizens cannot take any amount of Algerian currency outside of the country. Algerian residents can take the amount of up 10,000 DA out of the country, Algerian dual-nationals who are not residents or other third country nationals are not permitted to take Algerian currency outside of the country.

The official exchange rate may vary considerably from the actual exchange rate on the street. It is illegal to change money on the black market, and you should only exchange foreign currency at banks or authorized currency exchange locations, such as major hotels.

Upon leaving Algeria, authorities may ask if you have any currency and possibly search you. Penalties can be severe if you failed to declare foreign currency in excess of the above amount upon entering Algeria, but are found to possess it when exiting the country. They will compare the amount of foreign currency you declared when entering and the amount you are taking out, and you will need to show documentation that your currency was exchanged legally.

For emergency services in Algeria, dial 021711414.

Ambulance services are available in major cities such as the capital city of Algiers, but training and availability of emergency responders varies and may be below U.S. standards. Ambulance services are also not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.  Response times are unpredictable and not as rapid as in the U.S. Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.  Credit card payment is not usually available. Most hospitals and medical professionals require cash payment at time of services rendered.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas.  Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments.  See our webpage for more information on overseas insurance coverage.  Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.  The air quality varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons.  It is typically at its worst in the summer. People at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure include:

  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities: Adequate health facilities are available in Algiers and other major cities, but quality is variable. Health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards. Medical staff may speak little or no English.

Generally, in hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Consider hiring a private nurse or having family spend the night with the patient, especially a minor child.

Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care primarily available through government institutions

Pharmaceuticals:

  • Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.  Check with the Algerian Ministry of Health [COUNTRY Federal Office of Public Health w/ link] to ensure the medication is legal in Algeria.
  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas.  Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy:

  • If you are considering traveling to Algeria to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is illegal for foreigners in Algeria.

Water Quality: In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested.  Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel:

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Algeria suffers significant road safety problems, including poorly maintained roads, a lack of roadway signage, insufficient vehicle maintenance, defective and pirated auto parts, driver fatigue, and reckless and unskilled drivers. Lack of enforcement continues to be a major problem. While emergency response resources are adequate in Algiers and other populated cities, this is not the case in rural areas.

  • Travel overland, particularly in the southern regions, may require a permit issued by the Algerian Ministry of Interior.
  • Algeria recognizes International Driving Permits. U.S. citizens who wish to drive in Algeria should obtain an International Driver’s Permit in advance. See the Department’s  Driving Abroad  page for more information on driving permits. For information on obtaining an Algerian driver’s license, see the Algerian Ministry of Interior’s page for driving licenses .
  • Drivers will encounter police and military checkpoints on major roads within/around Algiers and other major cities. Police will require you to turn off your headlights when approaching a checkpoint at night.
  • Rather than traffic lights, police control most major traffic intersections in Algiers.

Traffic Laws: Driving in Algeria can be chaotic and unsafe.  There are limited traffic signs, very few designated lanes, and drivers often straddle two lanes when there are designated lanes.  There are very few sidewalks and pedestrians must often walk in the street.  When driving, ensure that you carry your state license and International Driver License.  In case of a traffic accident, contact the police and do not move vehicles until a police officer arrives.  Ensure that you get the other driver’s insurance information and identification as well.

Public Transportation: Trains operate between cities in the coastal regions of Algeria (although not inter-country) and are generally safe and reliable. There is a new urban railway in Algiers that runs along the coast and is clean and well-policed. Due to concerns about crime and mechanical safety, citizens should consider carefully the risks of buses, as well as taxis hailed on the street. There are new radio-dispatch taxis within Algiers as well as taxi hailing apps such as “Yassir”.

See our Road Safety page for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight: As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Algeria, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Algeria’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards.  Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Algeria should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts .  Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

On paper, Algeria has it all: postcard-perfect Mediterranean beaches along 1600km of coastline, evocative ruins of the ancient Roman empire, neverending Saharan desert dunes and labyrinthine medinas to rival those of neighbouring Morocco and Tunisia . But the reality is that it’s one of the most challenging countries to visit in the Middle East and North Africa: getting an Algerian visa can be a bureaucratic nightmare that requires patience and possibly clairvoyance.

Roman ruins in a desert.

But the country, the largest in Africa, seems to be inching closer to making its visa processes easier. The Algerian government announced that a new visa system will be launched ‘in the coming weeks. according to Arabian Business. About three million tourists visited Algeria last year, compared to 13 million visitors to Morocco and a record-breaking nine million visitors to Tunisia. How Algeria plans to differentiate itself from its neighbours and what exactly the new visa process will entail has yet to be seen, but the aim is to reel in five million tourists per year by 2025, mostly from Europe, China, Canada and the US.

A rugged mountain landscape.

In January, the British Backpacker Society named Algeria as the destination in the world with the most potential for adventure travel , saying that ‘Algeria's tourism industry is not only blessed by world-class desert scenery, delightfully hospitable people and spectacular ancient ruins, but it is also blessed by its geographical proximity to keen travellers’.

Entry requirements

This page has information on travelling to Algeria.

This page reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British Citizen’ passport, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Algeria set and enforce entry rules. If you’re unsure how Algeria’s entry requirements apply to you, contact its UK embassy, high commission or consulate .

You should also consider checking with your transport provider or travel company to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

On 30 October 2022, the Algerian authorities announced the lifting of all entry requirements related to Covid-19.

Before you travel, you will need to get a visa from the Algerian Consulate in London , unless you will arrive in a designated airport in the south of Algeria which allows for obtaining a tourist visa upon arrival. Please be aware you will need a confirmed reservation with an approved local travel agency in order to obtain such a visa. For further information on designated airports and approved local travel agencies you should contact the Algerian Consulate in London .

You should check the details of your visa, including validity dates, before travelling. Should you overstay the duration of your visa or the time you are permitted to stay in country as granted upon arrival, you are likely to be detained by the immigration police at the airport whilst attempting to exit Algeria. This may result in a criminal prosecution and up to 3 months in jail. If you need to stay in Algeria for a longer period than your visa or entry stamp allows, you may be able to extend your visa at the Wilaya (Town Hall) nearest to you.

Algerian border

The land border between Algeria and Morocco is closed. Do not attempt to cross it.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) advises against all travel to areas within;

  • 30km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger
  • 30km of the border with Tunisia in the provinces of Ilizi and Ouargla and in the Chambi mountains area

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to within 30km of the remainder of the border with Tunisia.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Algeria.

Leaving Algeria

When exiting Algeria, the Algerian authorities usually require sight of the document you used to enter the country. In the event that your passport was lost or stolen during your stay in Algeria, you will need to present a police report to the border police to show why you are no longer in possession of the passport you used to enter Algeria.

Yellow fever certificate requirements

Check whether you need a yellow fever certificate by visiting the National Travel Health Network and Centre’s TravelHealthPro website .

Travel with children

In Algeria, the age of majority (when a child is legally recognised as an adult) is 19 years and 1 day old. Any person under this age whose father is an Algerian citizen will be regarded as Algerian if the father’s name is on the birth certificate. Any such child leaving Algeria without their parents will only be able to travel with parental consent ‘Autorisation Parentale’ or, if travelling with just one parent, the parent (whether mother or father) will be expected to prove their parental link through a Livret de famille or a certified copy. Unaccompanied minors will need a letter from their parent or guardian granting them permission to travel out of the country.

For further information on exactly what will be required at immigration, you can check the website of the Algerian Ministry of Interior or you can contact the Algerian Consulate in London

The Algeria Visa Application Process and Requirements

When you apply for your Algeria visa, you need to take account of processing times. Generally, the turnaround time is 10 days. However, it’s worth checking with the individual embassy or consulate you are dealing with because they may have slightly different timescales. In addition, some embassies and consulates may allow you to apply by mailing your application and this could also affect the timescales.

The best thing to do is check the embassy or consulate’s website for their processing times and apply well in advance of your trip.

Once you know where to apply from, there are a serious of steps to help you apply for your Algeria visa. The first one is to make an appointment at the embassy or consulate you will be applying at.

Step 1: Make your appointment online

If you have to appear in person to submit your application and supporting documents, the first step is to make an appointment at the Algerian Embassy or Consulate General you will be applying through.

Visit their website for instructions on how to do this. Most visa authorities have online booking systems that you can use to make a suitable date and time for your appointment. However, you may simply need to phone or email to make your appointment.

Step 2: Complete Algeria visa application form

The next step is to complete your application form. You will be able to find this on the website of the embassy or consulate general you are dealing with. There are two ways to complete your form:

  • Use the embassy or consulate’s website to complete your form online
  • Download the application form from their website

Step 3: Get your documents ready

Step 3 is very important to get right. If you submit your application but have failed to comply with the embassy or consulate’s requirements for what documents you need for your application, then this could result in you having to reschedule your appointment or a declined application or both. So, spend time looking at the requirements before you begin.

You also need to provide original documents as well as photocopies. If you don’t provide photocopies this will be viewed as an incomplete application, so don’t forget to do this.

Documents you need to get ready are:

1) Original passport valid for 6 months beyond your stay in Algeria. It should also have at least 2 free pages for your Algerian visa to be attached

2) Algerian visa application form – fully completed and signed. You may need 1 or 2 copies depending on the particular embassy or consulate

3) 2 x passport-sized photograph in color, front view, and with a plain/white background

4) Proof of residence and valid visa with ID – please note that you must live in the jurisdiction of the embassy or consulate that you are dealing with. Check the website of the particular office to make sure you apply at the right one

5) Flight itinerary and/or ticket showing entry and departure points from Algeria

6) Proof of accommodation – hotel reservation and/or cruise reservation. If you are planning on staying in various hotels, you need to provide proof of each reservation. If you are staying with family or friends in Algeria, you need an inviting letter from the host

7) Proof of sufficient funds – bank statement and/or payslips

8) Proof of financial support in Algeria

9) Travel insurance for a minimum of €30,000 – this is mandatory for citizens of the following countries; Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Macedonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania.

Flight reservation without payment

Step 4: Submitting your file

When the day arrives for you to attend your appointment, remember the following things:

  • Arrive early – if you are late, you may need to make a new appointment and this could delay things for you
  • Dress smartly – this is not the time and place to turn up in jeans and a t-shirt. Dressing smartly really does make a difference
  • Remember your application and ALL the supporting documents – if you forget anything your appointment may have to be rescheduled. The embassy or consulate that you are dealing with cannot make a decision regarding your visa if there is anything missing

At the start of your appointment, the visa official will look over your application and other documents and if they need to clarify any of the information you have supplied they may ask you extra questions. If they do, simply answer them with confidence, do so politely, and provide them with the information they are seeking. Common questions could be:

  • What salary do you earn?

  • What do you know about Algeria?
  • Are you meeting anyone there?

You will also pay the fee for your visa. The fee must be paid for in the local currency of the country you are applying for. Generally, you can pay by cash, money orders, cashier’s check, or credit/debit card but this depends on the embassy or consulate you are dealing with. In addition, if a 3 rd party visa application center is used to deal with visa applications, there may also be a service fee to pay too. These fees are non-refundable even if your application is refused.

Algeria Visa Fee

Step 5: receive algeria visa.

When your application has been processed and there is a decision on whether your visa has been granted or not, you will receive notification and you can either collect your passport from the respective Algerian Embassy or Consulate OR you can have it mailed back to you.

With any luck, your new Algeria visa will be attached to your passport, but there are instances when visa applications get refused such as:

  • You have not provided a good enough reason for traveling to Algeria
  • Your travel itinerary was not included
  • It does not appear that you can afford the trip
  • Your passport is not valid
  • You have submitted documents in a foreign language

Firstly, you must satisfy the embassy or consulate that you have a purpose for traveling to Algeria and that your reason for travel is genuine. You must provide all the required documents and those documents must be translated into English if they are in a foreign language. You must also prove that you can pay for your trip by providing bank statements or other forms of proof. Lastly, your passport should be valid for 6 months after you return to your home country.

All About the Algeria Visa

As the largest country in Africa, Algeria boasts scenery and activities for all types of travellers. Whether you’re visiting to learn the history and admire the colonial architecture of the capital, Algiers, or you’re travelling to soak up the sun in its dramatic desert dunes or Mediterranean beaches, this country has something for you.

However, despite its wide touristic offering, this North African country is often shrouded in mystery – especially with regard to entry and exit requirements. At the time of writing, the government has announced an e-Visa (Electronic Visa) scheme expected to be launched in the near future. This means there’ll no longer be any need to visit the embassy, fill in long forms or hand your passport over to the consular section for weeks at a time.

When this document is released, Byevisa will outline all the steps needed to request the entry permit online. Until then, below we offer all the need-to-know information on the types of Algerian entry documents available and how to request yours. In short, let us worry about the visa policy of Algeria so you can focus on the more important things, like which incredible landscape to explore first!

Visa for Algeria Application Process

The Algerian government has yet to announce what you’ll need to apply for an eVisa. Based on other countries’ similar systems, you’ll likely require the following:

  • An email address, to receive your travel authorisation.
  • A valid passport, likely with at least 6 months remaining validity and 2 blank pages.
  • Some personal details such as your name, date of birth and passport information.
  • Details of your travel plan, such as date of entry/exit and your itinerary.
  • A credit/debit card or PayPal account to pay for the application.

Applying for this travel authorisation will be simple with Byevisa. It can be requested in just a few steps:

  • On the Byevisa page, select where you’re from and where you wish to travel (Algeria).
  • Fill in our online application form with your personal, passport and travel details.
  • Select how fast you want your visa – Standard, Rapid or Highly Rapid.
  • Pay the online fee.

You’ll receive your e-Visa by email shortly after, which we recommend printing and taking with you. While the document may be electronically linked to your passport, it’s always wise to carry a hard copy as a backup to prove you’re authorised.

Algeria Visa Requirements and Eligibility

The Algerian government hasn’t announced which nationalities can take advantage of the new e-Visa. It is thought that citizens of countries that currently require a travel authorisation to enter – such as the United States, United Kingdom and EU Member States – will likely be able to apply through this scheme.

In the meantime, here is the list of current Algeria visa-free countries. These tourists or business travellers may visit for up to 90 days with only a valid passport – no forms, fees or lengthy application procedures necessary:

Libia Malaysia Maldives Mali Mauritania Morocco Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Western Sahara) Seychelles Tunisia

For the time being, all travellers who do not qualify for the exemption mentioned above must apply for a traditional permit in person or via courier at their nearest embassy or consulate.

There are different categories of visas depending on your length of stay and purpose of travel. Here’s a brief overview:

  • Diplomatic – for diplomatic passport or UN Laissez-Passer holders.
  • Media – for foreign media or journalists.
  • Visitor or Tourist Permit.
  • Algeria business visa – for meetings and conferences.
  • Student Study Permit.
  • Work Entry Permit – for foreign workers or employees of foreign companies assigned to work in the country.
  • Temporary Work Entry Permit – available for stays of 90 days or less.
  • Family – for members of an Algerian family.
  • Medical – for medical care or treatment.
  • Cultural – for participation in cultural, scientific or sporting events.
  • Transit – valid for up to 7 days and granted to visitors holding a visa to their country of destination.

For the purposes of this page, we will focus mainly on short-term tourist authorisations. Nevertheless, the basic requirements for the other types of permits are similar – give or take a few supporting documents from your school, business or sponsor.

Algeria Visa Application Form and Documents

The first step is to locate your nearest embassy or consulate and contact them for an appointment. To do this, you can use our embassy finder tool here.

Then, on the embassy’s official website, you will be able to open the visa application in PDF format and fill in your details. Make sure all your information is typed in before printing and signing 2 copies (handwritten applications will not be accepted). To successfully complete this form you will need:

  • Your full names and any former names.
  • Your marital status and the name of your spouse, if applicable.
  • Your date and place of birth.
  • Your passport number, issue and expiration dates.
  • The purpose of your stay and the address of your accommodation.
  • Information on previous visits to the country.

Once complete, the next step is to gather your supporting documents. On the day of your appointment you will need:

  • 2 duly completed application forms (filled in online, printed and signed).
  • Your original passport with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page, plus a copy of the first page (the number of copies needed may vary depending on the embassy).
  • 2 passport-size photos. The Algeria visa photo size is 35x45mm. Photos must be frontal-view, of the same batch, taken in front of a white background and showing the applicant wearing no glasses of any kind, except for prescription eyewear.
  • A copy of a round-trip flight ticket.
  • Payment (please check with your embassy for the specific amount and method of payment, as this varies by nationality).
  • Travel insurance ( this is mandatory for citizens of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania.)

In addition to the documents listed above, tourists hoping to visit this North African country must also provide the following:

  • If you’re staying with friends or family: an accommodation certificate, duly certified by the local authorities in Algeria. This must bear the name of the person inviting you, their relationship to you, and the address where you will be staying.
  • If you’re staying in a hotel: a confirmation of the hotel booking.
  • If you’re travelling as part of an organised tour: an official invitation and itinerary from a travel agency in Algeria.
  • A Certificate of Employment (CoE) or other evidence of activity and income (pay slips, bank statements).

Visa to Algeria Status Check

Your travel to Algeria visa should be processed in 10 working days if submitted in person, or 15 days if submitted by mail. Keep in mind that your nationality, as well as the time of year, may affect the processing time. For example, applicants may experience a longer wait time if applying during Ramadan and the Eid celebrations.

Whether or not you’ll be able to check the status of your document depends entirely on the embassy where you apply; in many cases, this information is hard to come by.

However, once the e-Visa scheme comes into effect, checking your status with Byevisa will be a breeze. You’ll simply go to ‘Log In’ at the top of this page, enter your details and find out:

  • If your travel pass has been accepted.
  • If it was rejected, and the reason why if we know.
  • When it becomes or became valid, and how long it’s got left.
  • Your travel authorisation’s exact expiry date.

How Much Does an Algeria Visa Cost?

Visa fees for Algeria vary depending on the nationality of the applicant, the duration of stay and the number of entries. To give you an idea, for European citizens staying for 90 days or less, the cost is 85 EUR (99 USD).

The Algerian government has yet to announce the prices of its new e-Visa. For Byevisa to handle your application on your behalf, you’ll also pay a small processing fee. This fee depends on the processing speed you choose: Standard, Rapid or Highly Rapid.
