Getting to Antelope Canyon from Sedona, Az is very easy and the scenic drive from Sedona will take you through some amazing sites such as Slide Rock State Park, Coconino National Forest, and Flagstaff.

You will also pass by Wupatki National Monument and some other notable canyons in the area that you could consider adding to your road trip. If you are planning to road trip on your own, we recommend that you leave early to ensure that you arrive at Antelope Canyon in time for your tour.

Many people will begin this trip by flying into Phoenix and then road-tripping to Sedona before heading onto Antelope Canyon.

How Far is Sedona from Antelope Canyon?

The Sedona from Antelope Canyon drive will take approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes . The drive from Sedona to Antelope Canyon is around 160 miles via US-89 N/N 89. This is a relatively short drive that leaves you with a lot of time left in the day. There are also numerous stops that you can make along the way if you start your road trip extra early. Whether you make frequent stops or just pass by, you will experience beautiful scenic landscapes of Navajo Nation during a lot of the road trip.

Sedona AZ to Antelope Canyon Directions

• From Sedona, head north on 89A until reaching I-17 N
• Turn left to merge onto I-17 N heading toward Flagstaff
• From I-17 N, merge onto I-40 N which will then turn back into 89A after passing through Flagstaff
• Continue on 89A until the road splits, and then continue on road 89 instead of 89A
• Continue on road 89 until you finally arrive at Antelope Canyon

Renting a Car for your Antelope Canyon Sedona Trip

If you don’t have your own car and want to drive to Sedona, it is super easy to rent a car to get there on your own.

We love having our own car and usually always either rent a car for our road trips or even rent an RV and camp at the different campgrounds along the way.

Absolutely! You can take a day trip from Sedona to Antelope Canyon. You can spend your day touring the canyon and surrounding areas in the Navajo Nation or focus on hiking all the different Antelope Canyon trails. The area also has an incredibly rich Native history and culture that you can learn about during any of the tours of Antelope Canyon from Sedona.

Can you do the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon in One Day from Sedona?

Yes, you can travel from Sedona to Antelope Canyon to the Grand Canyon in one day. You will want to take into consideration the driving involved though. To get from Sedona to the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and then back to Sedona again it would be approximately 7 and ½ hours of driving altogether, but it is totally doable and you will get to enjoy all of the scenic views that Arizona has to offer during the drive.

Best Stops on an Antelope Canyon Sedona Road Trip

1. slide rock state park.

6 miles north of Sedona in Oak Creek Canyon is Slide Rock State Park , a beautiful swimming hole that has a natural rock slide where you can cool off on a hot summer’s day.

Slide Rock State Park offers a variety of activities and attractions. You can stop for a bite to eat at one of the many picnicking spots or cool off in one of the swimming holes.

You will want to check out one or more of the hiking trails where you can see nature up close and personal. If you plan on making this stop, make sure to bring your camera for all of the photography spots!

2. Coconino National Forest

Located near Flagstaff, the Coconino National Forest is known for its diverse landscapes, including deserts, alpine tundra, ancient volcano peaks, and much more!

Coconino National Forest’s Flagstaff District offers as many activities and attractions as it does landscapes!

You can hang out at one of the picnic areas after hiking one of the many trails. Check out the variety of wilderness areas or get out on the water at the boating and fishing sites. 

If you are feeling less active that day, you could stay in the car for some scenic drives or learn about the forest’s history by visiting the archaeological sites.

3. Flagstaff

Flagstaff, Arizona, is known for its perfect year-round weather which allows for all sorts of seasonal activities for visitors. It also serves as a cultural hub of Northern Arizona.  

Flagstaff offers travelers historical tours and stargazing at the Lowell Observatory. The Museum of Northern Arizona can teach you the history of the area through art and archaeology.

If you have time to spare, make a day of Flagstaff by hiking the impact of the Meteor Crater or riding the Grand Canyon Railway.

4. Wupatki National Monument

The Wupatki National Monument, located in Flagstaff, is home to dozens of preserved ancestral Puebloan villages.

You can gain a ton of insight into the history of the area by participating in one of the Archaeology Month Activities or by exploring the museum collections.

Get outdoors by walking or hiking one of the trails around the villages or go on one of the professional ranger-guided day hikes.

5. The Grand Canyon

One of the most notable national parks, The Grand Canyon is one of the most incredible examples of erosion in the world. Experience this wonder firsthand by walking or hiking the Canyon Rim Trail or the Trail of Time.

The Grand Canyon also has a ton of history to offer through a visit to the Tusayan Pueblo/Museum or a ranger-led hike.

If you are looking for a more unique experience, you can also opt for a Mule Trip or a Raft Trip on the Colorado River. 

6. Horseshoe Bend Overlook

A landmark in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Horseshoe Bend Overlook offers a 1.5-mile hike up to see its renowned view. While this hike is fairly short, you can opt for an off-road guided tour of the area too.

Horseshoe Bend Overlook offers incredible viewpoints of the unique and unforgettable landscape. This is definitely where you will want to capture some photos to take home!

7. Lake Powell

The nation’s second-largest man-made lake, Lake Powell has an array of day activities and picturesque views to offer via the Lake Powell Resort.

If you rather get out on the water, Lake Powell offers kayaking, waterskiing, and wakeboarding in Wahweap Bay. Swimming is also an option if you drive to The Chains.

If you want to take in all of the scenic views, then we recommend looking out at Lake Powell from Mountain Viewpoint or Wahweap Viewpoint.

8. Other Slot Canyons in Arizona

Besides Antelope Canyon, there are a lot of other slot canyons in the area . If you want to view some other slot canyons that see way fewer crowds, check out Antelope Canyon X .

All of these other canyons are very adventurous, so if you’re up for going a bit off the beaten path, we would definitely recommend checking them out.

Sedona to Antelope Canyon Day Trip Itinerary Example

If you’re excited about a road trip from Sedona to Antelope Canyon but aren’t quite sure how the day would work out, we’ve put together an example itinerary.

You can totally change this up to suit your needs/what you want to see or even opt to stay the night near Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ.

• 6:00 AM – Wake up bright and early to start the road trip from Sedona, Arizona, to Antelope Canyon.
• 7:30 AM – Make a pit stop in Flagstaff, Arizona, to check out what the city has to offer and maybe even take a historical tour!
• 10:00 AM – Arrive at Antelope Canyon after a 2 hour and 30-minute drive, and spend 1-2 hours exploring the sandstone cliffs of the canyon via a guided hiking tour.
• 12:00 PM – Take a lunch break to refuel for the remainder of the road trip!
• 1:00 PM – Spend 30 minutes – 1 hour at Horseshoe Bend hiking to the overlook to take in the spectacular views of the Colorado River.
• 3:00 PM – Stop by the historic Cameron Trading Post to explore the area and peruse the art and souvenirs that the native Navajo vendors have to offer.
• 5:00 PM – Drive back towards Sedona and make a stop to spend the second half of the day cooling off in the waters of Slide Rock State Park.

End your day with a quick approximately 15-minute drive back to Sedona from Slide Rock State Park, and relax at your hotel for the remainder of the evening.

The Best Time for an Antelope Canyon to Sedona Trip

The best time to visit Antelope Canyon from Sedona is during the summer while the sun is at its highest. This allows you the best opportunity to see the famous light beams.

However, keep in mind these light beams are viewable only from approximately March 20th – October 20th.

If you prefer to avoid tourist crowds, you may want to consider visiting during early spring or fall. If you go during a colder month like Sedona in November , it is best to layer up your clothes to be prepared for quick weather changes.

Additionally, the best time of the week to visit Antelope Canyon is on a weekday during the morning time. Visiting during the week will help you avoid large crowds, parking difficulties, and sold-out tours during the weekend times. 

Tips for Visiting Antelope Canyon from Sedona

Check out these tips before you go, so you can be prepared for the best road trip and know what to expect when visiting Antelope Canyon. 

• Make your reservation in advance: Most tours sell out quickly and require hotel information in advance if you opt for pickup.
• Plan out your route: You can’t do it all in one day, so pick out your top sites to visit and plan out your route accordingly so as to not waste any of the time on your action-packed day.
• Pack lunch: There are a few places to stop along the way, but it’s the most fun to bring your own lunch and eat it at a lookout picnic spot along the way.
• Arrive early: Beat the midday heat and the crowds by arriving early in the morning.
• Don’t bring backpacks: In order to protect the canyon, bags of any size are not allowed in the canyon

If you’re planning a trip to Arizona and the Sonoran Desert, I always suggest making the trip from Sedona to Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ.

These two sites are even more stunning in person, and truly unique to Arizona! 

Here are a few key things to know about a trip from Sedona to Page, AZ:

• The drive is under 3 hours.
• You can take a detour to the Grand Canyon along the way.
• Day trip tours are available from Sedona to Antelope Canyon.
• Temperatures hit triple digits in the summer in Page.
• It can snow in the winter in both Sedona and Page.
• You’ll need reservations in advance for Antelope Canyon.

Sedona to Horseshoe Bend

While you have to book a tour and reservation for Antelope Canyon , Horseshoe Bend is open to the public without the need for a permit or reservation.

It’s just south of Page, and easy to get to with a huge parking lot.

The hike from the parking lot to the famous bend in the Colorado River is mostly flat, and about one mile long.

PRO TIP : Don’t just stand with the crowd on the main viewing platform. Walking down the rocky ledge will offer the same amazing views, along with some peace and quiet.

Drive from Sedona to Page, AZ

The drive from Sedona to Page is pretty painless. Under normal conditions, you should expect it to be:

There are no toll roads, and you won’t hit any traffic.

The directions from Sedona to Page are simple:

• Highway 89A North from Sedona to Flagstaff.
• I-40 East in Flagstaff to Highway 89 North.
• North of Cameron and Willow Springs, Google Maps might tell you to veer off onto Coppermine Road. 
• Ignore that suggestion, and continue on 89 all the way to Page.

Add a Detour to the Grand Canyon

If you’re driving yourself, adding a detour on a trip from Sedona to Page, AZ, will add just two hours to your road trip.

For first-time visitors to Arizona, it’s worth the extra drive!

On your drive from Sedona to Antelope Canyon and other sites in Page, here are directions for the detour to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon:

• Sedona to Cameron, AZ: 80 miles / 90 minutes
• Cameron to Grand Canyon Village: 60 miles / 70 minutes
• Enjoy the views!
• Grand Canyon Village to Cameron: 60 miles / 70 minutes
• Cameron to Page, AZ: 80 miles / 80 minutes
• Use Highway 89 to Page

Even if you don’t want to hike one of the Grand Canyon’s trails, if you’re in the Southwest, you might as well check out the views at one of the “Seven Wonders of the World.”

Devil’s Bridge Hike

Devil’s Bridge is arguably the most famous hike in Sedona. There are so many to choose from, but Devil’s Bridge is one of the best!

A moderate hike will take you to a large sandstone arch, which spans the red rocks and Coconino National Forest below.

Things to do in Page, AZ

The natural wonders around Page , aside from Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, are vastly underrated!

I have a whole separate blog, listing 30 things to do in Page , but here are some of the top sites to see:

Page is a home base to “The Wave” rock formation, but to hike there you need a permit that for me (and many others) has been impossible to get over the years.

I’ll keep trying myself for a permit, but so far my only glimpse of The Wave has been from the sky, on a flight over the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell.

White Pocket

If you’re up for an even better adventure, I’d suggest going to White Pocket .

It’s not as well known, but the geography and views at White Pocket are stunning. It might be my favorite spot in Arizona!

Just beware: you’ll need to rent a 4×4 or take a tour to get there.

Glen Canyon Dam

The Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch dam on the Colorado River, right in the City of Page. It was constructed in the 1960s to provide hydroelectric power, water storage, and flood control.

The visitor center provides tours, plus exhibits on the history and mechanics of this man-made wonder!

The dam creates Lake Powell, the second-largest man-made reservoir in the United States. 

Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch

You can hike this popular trail, which is more of a drive outside the City of Page, to another slot canyon. You don’t need a permit or reservation, but you will have to pay a parking fee.

Make sure to head to the Wire Pass parking lot, rather than the Buckskin Gulch lot.

Horseshoe Bend

I’ll mention Horseshoe Bend again in this section, since it’s free (aside from the parking fee) and accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

It’s conveniently located just outside the city of Page, so I’d consider it a “must-see” when you visit!

Antelope Canyon X and Cardiac Canyon

These are two more sections of Antelope Canyon, which offer unique experiences.

In addition to standard tours, Antelope X offers a special photography tour.

Both Sedona and Antelope Canyon have seen explosive growth in tourism over the last decade, and you’ll notice: it’s not just Americans. Antelope Canyon especially has become world famous. You’ll have people from Asia and Europe on your tour with you!

With that said, the crowds are smallest in the winter months, from December through January, and into February.

Sedona to Antelope Canyon in Winter

Sedona experiences relatively mild winters compared to many other parts of the country. Winter temperatures in Sedona typically range from around 40°F (4°C) to 60°F (15°C) during the day, though it can drop below freezing at night. 

The city of Sedona, and the surrounding red rocks, are usually blanketed with a light layer of snow a few times each winter. It can accumulate at times, and close the highway you’d take north to Flagstaff (89A).

In Page, temperatures in winter usually range from around 30°F (-1°C) to 50°F (10°C) during the day, dropping below freezing at night.

Snowfall in Page is not uncommon, particularly in January and February. However, snow accumulation tends to be relatively light, and it might not stick around for long in the city.

Sedona to Antelope Canyon in Spring

In Sedona, the spring months (March, April, and May) bring beautiful weather and big crowds beginning with spring breakers in March.

Rainfall in Sedona during the summer months is generally minimal. 

 During the summer months in Page, daytime temperatures can surpass 100°F, so prepare for the heat! It’s still a good time to visit Antelope Canyon, since the canyon itself stays a bit cooler.

The monsoon is the big game-changer for summertime visits to Antelope Canyon. The storms can whip up quickly, and dump rainfall on the area. The operators of the Antelope Canyon tours will close if there’s even a possibility that rain in the distance could cause a flash flood in the canyon.

Canceled tours will be rescheduled for the following day.

Or, you can take a Contour Airlines flight right from the small airport in Page to Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX).

The caveat to this option is: it’ll likely be expensive to drop your rental car (if you have one) off in Page. As I write this, only Avis serves the Page area.

Generally, Upper Antelope is a bit darker inside. The canyon is A-shaped, so less light comes in. It’s also easier for seniors, since it doesn’t require climbing up or down any ladders.

Lower Antelope has the brighter orange sandstone walls, since it’s more V-shaped (allowing more light in). It requires a bit more physical effort, beginning with a climb down a ladder into the canyon to begin your trek.

Antelope Canyon is located on the Navajo Nation, therefore, you will need to take a guided tour from an authorized Navajo guide to see the slot canyons.  Guided tours require a reservation and fill up quickly during weekends and busy travel seasons.  Tours are offered all year long, but are subject to cancellation depending on the weather.  Rain and monsoon storms can cause flooding to the canyons and make then inaccessible.  Tours typically last between 30 minutes and 2 hours. The most popular travel times are midday March through October.  During winter months, tours are available but colors within the canyon walls tend to be more muted.

About the Antelope Canyon Tour

You will meet with your tour guide at a designated area.  Check for the location with your tour guide and you should arrive early.  From there, a guide will take your tour group to the canyon entrances in one of their four-wheeler vehicles.  Guides are extremely knowledgeable about Antelope Canyon.  They’ll describe how the slot canyons were made, different formations and the sacredness of the canyons to the Navajo People.  They are also experts on taking the best pictures.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  They recommend that you wear closed toed shoes, dress in layers and wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. You should check with the tour companies as many do not allow food, drinks, large bags or purses and tripods on the tour.

How to Get to Antelope Canyon from Sedona

Getting to Antelope Canyon from Sedona can be done in a few different ways.

Drive from Sedona to Antelope Canyon

The first option is to drive yourself from Sedona to Antelope Canyon. Driving from Sedona to Antelope Canyon takes approximately two and a half hours. The route takes you up 89A to Flagstaff, then onto US 89, and finally onto US 98 to the Navajo Bridge.

After crossing the bridge, you will take a left on US 89A and follow this road for a few miles until you reach the Antelope Canyon.

Rent a Car 

The second option is to rent a car . This is an excellent choice for those who don’t have their own vehicle. There are several car rental companies in Sedona that offer competitive rates and a variety of vehicles.

If you are flying into Phoenix or Las Vegas, it may be less expensive to rent a car there. Then you can drive to Sedona to Antelope Canyon .

Can you go to Antelope Canyon without a tour?

You are unable to visit Antelope Canyon without a tour. If you are joining the Sedona to Antelope Canyon tour, admission to the canyon is included. If you are transporting yourself to Antelope Canyon, you will need to join a guided tour at the entrance of the slot canyon.

Your tour will be with a local Navajo guide. It does not matter if you are taking an Upper Antelope Canyon tour, Lower Antelope Canyon Tour, or Canyon X tour. You will need to purchase your tour in advance to see this beautiful place.

Upper Antelope Canyon

A trip from Sedona to Upper Antelope Canyon is well worth it, as it’s the most popular of the canyons, and it’s easy to see why. Its walls are made up of stunningly smooth, curved sandstone that is illuminated by the light that peeks through the top of the canyon.

While you’re in Upper Antelope Canyon , you’ll be able to take in the breathtaking views and explore the area with a knowledgeable guide who will share the canyon’s history and cultural significance.

During the summer months, Upper Antelope Canyon is where you are most likely to see the famous light beams. This is also the most expensive part of the canyon to tour.

Tips for Visiting Antelope Canyon

Book a tour

Tours typically last for about two hours and include a guided tour of the canyon as well as transportation to and from the canyon. It is important to book your tour in advance because they fill up quickly.

Wear appropriate clothing

Antelope Canyon can get quite hot, especially during the summer months. Make sure to wear light, breathable clothing and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Closed-toe comfortable walking shoes are also recommended, as the canyon floor can be sandy and rocky.

Avoid peak tourist season

The closest airport to Antelope Canyon is the  Page Municipal Airport , located in Page, Arizona. This airport is only 8 miles away from Antelope Canyon and offers both commercial and private flights.

It is a small airport, though. If you’re looking for a larger airport, I would recommend the airport in Las Vegas or Phoenix.

I chose to stay in Sedona but if I had to do it again I would of picked Flagstaff, as it saves an hour of driving thru the Oak Creek Canyon and downtown Sedona. But if I had stayed in Flagstaff I probably would not of had Brian L. as my driver, since his tours run from Sedona, and he was fantastic! He knew so much about the area, history, and geology, it was amazing how much I information he knew. And it was even better that it wasn't a scripted tour, just from his true and genuine knowledge. I was back and forth on which Canyon to see (Upper or Lower) and whomever goes there will tell you the one they saw was best. Ultimately I went with Upper and I was not disappointed. It was so gorgeous, just like the photos show. The guides do a good job at moving their groups so you can't get photos without people in them. You have to take a tour to go see either Canyon, and this company books it thru the local Navajo guides up there, so it is weird, you actually get on a different tour bus to see the Canyon. We had Leonard for that and he was great too. He even played the flute for us in the Canyon. I wad glad to let someone else do the driving for me, as it's about 3 hrs each way to get there from Sedona. They also stopped at a trading post and we had lunch out at a locals spot too. My husband and I like the independence of driving ourselves but having never been to the Grand Canyon, we decided to sign up for the tour. Our tour guide Andrea picked us up at 7am as planned. We were 2 of 10 adults who were picked up along 4 stops in Sedona. Andrea was great! Very knowledgeable about Northern Arizona—its geography, history, ecologies, etc. She narrated interesting facts on the 1 1/2 hour drive to Williams. She is charming and entertaining. We boarded the train in Williams for a 2 1/4 hour ride to the Grand Canyon. The train doesn’t travel over about 35 miles per hour but the views are amazing and the service was great in our first class car. We just relaxed and settled in for the ride.We arrived at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center at 11:45, right on the rim. We walked the rim path and grabbed a sandwich. Andrea picked us up at the train depot at 1 pm and drove us to multiple viewing spots around the perimeter of the Grand Canyon where we all got out of the van, walked around and took photos. After leaving the Grand Canyon, we drove to the Navaho Nation outpost for shopping. I do not remember this stop being mentioned on the website when I booked this tour and would definitely have preferred to skip it and go directly back to our hotel. We were dropped off at 5:30 pm — a 10 1/2 hour round trip. Happy we did this tour with Andrea. Will be more careful in understanding all aspects of a tour before signing up for another one. Our guide Kurt shared his knowledge and passion for the history and uniqueness of the area. At no time did we feel rushed. Kurt allowed us plenty of time to browse, shop, eat, and see the sights. Tour Itinerary

Check in at the Sedona Airport in the morning for your scenic, narrated flight over some of the most scenic parts of Arizona, direct to Page.

After landing at Page passengers will be driven to the Antelope Canyon Trailhead for a 1.5-hour hiking tour of Antelope Canyon.

After the ground tour passengers are transported back to the airport for departure for a scenic flight over Lake Powell and on to Monument Valley.

We will land at the Gouldings Airstrip and then depart on a 90-minute, 4X4 ground tour, into the Navajo Tribal Park with a Navajo guide, up to John Ford’s Point, and stopping for photo opportunities on the way back down.

During your ground tour, a box lunch will be provided. Finally return to the airplane for your direct flight back to Sedona, over the vast high desert and Meteor Crater.

Please note the Antelope Canyon tour is quite strenuous and not suitable for anyone with mobility challenges. This tour is extremely popular, so bookings should be made at least 3-4 weeks prior to your tour.

The great city of Phoenix has so much to offer when it comes to culture, history, and entertainment. But the truth is that it's also a great idea to head out of the city for a few fabulous days exploring new places.

1.   Prescott (1 hour 30 minute drive)

For those looking for great outdoor adventures and intriguing historical sites, Prescott is one of the best weekend trips from Phoenix.

Sitting at an elevation of around 5,400 feet you’ll notice much cooler temps in Prescott compared to Phoenix.

4.   Page and Antelope Canyon (4 hour 15 minute drive)

Page is the place if you're looking for some of the most incredible weekend trips from Phoenix for outdoor experiences.

In Page you'll find both Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon , two of the most iconic natural formations in the US. Just make sure to plan your visit and make reservations in advance for Antelope Canyon.

For a chance to see the sunlight streaming down through the red sandstone slot canyon book the Upper Antelope Canyon tour around midday. This is the easiest tour because it’s basically flat with no stairs to climb and no ladders.

You can also tour Lower Antelope Canyon which is a bit more narrow and requires climbing a couple of staircases and some ladders inside the canyon.

I did both tours and I preferred the lower canyon because I felt it had more photo opportunities but both tours were fantastic, well organized, fun, and informative. Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo land and the tours are run by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation.

Page is also home to Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Center which have tons to do outdoors. Water levels at Lake Powell have fluctuated a lot lately with drought and then recovering to more normal levels with spring run off and more rain.

5.   Flagstaff (2 hour 20 minute drive)

Most people know Flagstaff as a great home base for visiting the Grand Canyon or as a stop on Route 66.

But the truth is Flagstaff is a super cool destination all on its own and it's less than 3 hours from Phoenix.

A superb place for outdoor enthusiasts, your Flagstaff itinerary will be packed with everything from mountain biking Shultz Pass Loop and hitting the hiking trails like Campbell Mesa Loop or Picture Canyon .

Don’t miss checking out Walnut Canyon , the Lava River Cave, Wupatki National Monument or the Lowell Observatory . All these make Flagstaff one of the best weekend trips from Phoenix.

Another thing I love about Flagstaff is all the unique coffee shops. Check out Macy’s European Coffee House & Bakery at 14 S Beaver Street in central Flagstaff. Coffee + bakery what else do you need?

Okay, maybe you're like me and you need beer after a hike, in that case I recommend Mother Road Brewing at 7 S Mikes Pike St is just off Route 66 for craft brewery with indoor/outdoor seating. Plus the patio is dog friendly so you can bring your furbaby. Also check out Lumberyard Brewing at 5 S San Francisco St is in the heart of Flagstaff. This microbrewery has a patio with firepit and a pub grub menu.

6.   Tucson (1 hour 45 minute drive)

In just about a 2 hour drive from Phoenix you’ll be in the great city of Tucson, making it one of the best weekend trips from Phoenix.

Looking for outdoor adventure in Tucson? Hop over to Saguaro National Park or check out the trails at Sabino Canyon .

You can also take a gorgeous scenic drive up to Mount Lemmon. And because the elevation is so much higher than Tucson it's several degrees cooler at Mount Lemmon.

There's even a skiing in winter. In summer you can take the ski lift to the top for some fabulous views and then hike back down.

For history just head to El Presidio Historic District where there are historic sites and museums.

Don't worry about what to eat – Tucson's restaurant scene is so good it's been designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. My fave taco place is Seis Kitchen over at 130 South Avenida del Convento near downtown but there are lots of great taco joints in Tucson.

Also check out Hotel Congress where a famous gangster named John Dillinger once stayed. Besides the historic significance the hotel is home to the Cup Cafe which is my favorite place for breakfast or brunch downtown. When you want to chillax Tiger's Tap Room is the place to be. They've got all sorts of cool artwork including the largest collection of Pete Martinez cowboy artwork in the world.

7.   Monument Valley (5 hour drive)

Movie fans will have no problem with the 5 hour drive to visit Monument Valley. Why? Its incredible landscape has been used at the setting of numerous films including Easy Rider, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the blockbuster Forrest Gump.

You'll love spending time in Monument Valley as it’s totally one of the best weekend getaways from Phoenix for anyone who loves road trips.

One of the best things to do is drive the Tribal Park Loop. It will take you past some of the most iconic sites in the valley and you’ll see why this awesome landscape has been used in the movies.

8.   Tonto National Forest (1 hour – 2 hour drive)

You’ll love kayaking Saguaro Lake and hiking Rim Lakes Vista Overlook . See the Salado cliff dwellings at Tonto National Monument.

9.   Las Vegas (5 hour drive)

Sin City doesn't really need an introduction. We all know that this fabulous city has it all from spectacular nightlife to world-class entertainment, restaurants, shops, and resorts.

You don’t even need to set foot in the casinos, there’s tons of fun things to do besides gambling .

If you’re itching to get away to Las Vegas for the weekend it’s only a 5 hour drive from Phoenix.

If you want to get there faster, a flight only takes an hour making it one of the most convenient weekend getaways from Phoenix.

10.   Lake Mead Recreation Area (4.5 hour drive)

Lake Mead is located only 4.5 hours away and is a major contender among the best long weekend trips from Phoenix.

One of the best things to do is to see Lake Mead from various perspectives.
