Transportation Options: How to Get Here There are a number of ways to get to Pearl Harbor, but which options allow you to get the most out of your visit?

Tour Company Honolulu, like most high-tourism cities, has a number of highly regarded, professional tour companies. The services and prices that they offer are often comparable, but its the level of service and quality that sets each apart. Pearl Harbor requires that any company providing tours on its grounds provide certain certifications. Additionally, tour guides of certified companies are deemed as experts of Pearl Harbor and give stirring narration and history of many events surrounding World War II, the attacks of December 7, 1941, the history of Hawaii, and the current state of Pearl Harbor.

Required Certifications: 1. Vehicle Insurance 2. CPR Certification, for each and every guide entering the center 3. First Aid Training 4. Tour Provider Certification 5. Passenger Transportation Permit

Upon approval by the National Park, these companies are then provided Commercial Use Authority , allowing for tours to Pearl Harbor including the Visitor Center and its museums.

**Please note, tour guides are not permitted to give tours on board the USS Arizona Memorial for the respect of victims. Pearl Harbor and the National Parks Service do have a Park Ranger stationed on board, who is expertly trained and available to share stories, facts, and answer questions.

What to Consider Before Booking a Pearl Harbor Tour

Best Pearl Harbor Tours

Locations visited:

Pearl Harbor has four museums that you can visit, including the USS Arizona Memorial , the USS Bowfin Submarine , USS Battleship Missouri , and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum . In addition, the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is near the boat dock for the USS Arizona Memorial and it is well worth spending time there.

Some tours will only cover one or two sights while others will cover all the museums. Read the details before booking so you’re not disappointed! Other tours will take you through parts of downtown Honolulu so you can see sights like Iolani Palace or the Punchbowl Cemetery, though these are quick stops for photos and not full tours.

Tours that cover more of the historic sites are longer and cost more.

Size of group:

We often get asked why tour prices can vary so significantly and the answer is usually dependent on the size of the group. The less expensive tours usually have a lot more people on them. That doesn’t mean they’re bad! But they do tend to move a little slower and be a little less flexible.

Pickup locations:

Not all tours will pick up from your hotel or vacation rental. Some of the larger tour buses will pick up at set locations throughout Waikiki. Airport pickups are rare unless you have specifically booked a tour from a neighbor island ( like this tour ).

Tour guide restrictions:

Your tour guide will not accompany you to the USS Arizona Memorial as they are prohibited from doing so. This can be a disappointment to people hoping for a full guided tour. In our experience, the best guides will give you history and information while they are driving you and during short tours at the beginning of visiting each museum. Then, you’re on your own to explore, listen, and learn.

I highly recommend the audio tour of the USS Bowfin Submarine and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. At the USS Missouri there was a tour guide on deck to answer all of our questions.

A Big Note About USS Arizona Memorial Tickets

One of the main reasons that people book tours is because they want to gain entrance to the USS Arizona Memorial . Unfortunately, booking a tour does not guarantee that you’ll get a ticket to see the memorial. There is a high probability that you’ll get one, but it’s not 100% guaranteed.

Here’s why: only a set number of tickets are released in advance for the USS Arizona. Tour companies do their absolute best to secure tickets (and they are good at doing so), but there might be some instances where they miss out. It can be a huge bummer, especially if your entire reason for visiting Pearl Harbor is to visit the memorial.

In addition, visiting the memorial requires a short boat ride. There are times when repair work is on the dock and no boat tours are running out to the USS Arizona Memorial. When that happens, you won’t be able to visit the memorial but all of the other museums and sights are still open and available to visit.

On a personal note, the memorial is incredibly moving but I found visiting all of Pearl Harbor to be fascinating. While I would definitely be disappointed to not see the memorial, there is so much to do, see, and learn there that I still think it is worth visiting without seeing the USS Arizona memorial.

Best Small Group Pearl Harbor Tours

Avoid big buses and enjoy a half day or full day out with a small group. Heading out with a small group will be more expensive, but it is a more personal tour.

Complete Pearl Harbor Historic Sights Tour

If you’re really interested in having a thorough tour of Pearl Harbor and visiting all of the museums (which we love doing!), this is a great tour. With only 12 passengers and a fun guide, you’ll enjoy spending the entire day immersing yourself in history.

This is the tour we joined after flying in from Maui (more details on that tour below) and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Sights visited: USS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, USS Bowfin Submarine, USS Missouri Battleship, driving tour of downtown Honolulu
  • Pickup: from your Waikiki hotel
  • Tour length: 9 hours
  • Group size: 12 passengers

  • Sights visited: USS Arizona
  • Pickup: Waikiki hotels
  • Tour length: approximately 4 hours
  • Group size: 11 people
  • Adult price: $119 per person

Best Full Pearl Harbor Tour

While most visitors head to Pearl Harbor to pay their respects at the USS Arizona Memorial, there is a lot more to do and see. I get it — the first time I visited Pearl Harbor I saw the memorial, looked at a bit of information at the museum and headed home.

What a mistake! When I finally went back and visited the other museums I was captivated. Climb through the Bowfin Submarine, walk the decks of the Battleship Missouri (Mighty Mo), and take in the aviation history at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

Best Pearl Harbor Tour

If you’re looking for a full tour that will take you to all of the museums, we have two recommendations for you:

WWII Heroes Deluxe Pearl Harbor Tour with Lunch

Spend the day with Polynesian adventures on their deluxe tour, which includes lunch at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum cafe.

  • Sights visited: USS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, USS Missouri Battleship, USS Bowfin Submarine, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum
  • Tour length: 9.5 hours
  • Group size: 50 people
  • Adult price: $204

Again, we’re including this full tour because not only is it a great small group tour, but it’s also a fantastic full day and complete tour if you want to visit all the museums. Spend the entire day immersing yourself in history.

Best Private Tour of Pearl Harbor

Half , full , or long day tour.

Sometimes you just want to see things at your own pace. If that’s you, consider taking a private tour with Halia. They offer 6 hour, 9 hour, or 12 hour tours with flat rate pricing for up to 10 guests.

You can design the tour stops with your guide and they will help you to secure USS Arizona Memorial tickets, if possible. As a guide, you can expect to do 1 activity on a 6 hour tour , 2 activities on a 9 hour tour , and 3 activities on a 12 hour tour .

Admission to the museums is not included in the tour price.

  • Sights visited: You choose!
  • Pickup: Wherever you’d like!
  • Tour length: 6 hours, 9 hours, or 12 hours
  • Group size: up to 10 guests
  • Adult price: prices start at $650

If you’re staying on another island, you can absolutely do a day trip to visit Pearl Harbor. We did this tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can see a video of our experience above. Everything was taken care of and the day was incredibly smooth and easy. What an awesome way to visit for a day!

  • Pickup: from the Honolulu airport
  • Tour length: 9 hours, not including flight time
  • Adult price: from $500 per person (includes airfare and airport pickup)

Do You Need to Take a Tour to Pearl Harbor?

Absolutely not. I’ve both visited on my own and taken a guided tour. While I did get significantly more from the guided tour (our tour guide was excellent, as most of them are), if you are not interested in having someone drive you around and provide you with historical facts, you can absolutely visit on your own.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor on your own

If you are planning to visit on your own, there are a few things you need to know for a successful trip:

  • USS Arizona Memorial tickets must be reserved in advance. You can book them for $1 at the official website . Tickets can be booked 8 weeks in advance. If the date you want to visit is sold out, you’re not out of luck! They release additional tickets 24 hours in advance. You can get more information on when tickets are released here . If you can’t get tickets, you can try your luck by joining a standby line and waiting for availability on the boat to the memorial.
  • A shuttle to Ford island is required. If you want to visit Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, you will need to take a free shuttle to Ford Island. The shuttle leaves regularly and is easy to take. You’ll find it at the end near the USS Bowfin Submarine museum.
  • Bags are not allowed into Pearl Harbor and can either be left in your car or you can pay for bag storage.
  • Passport to Pearl Harbor ticket: if you plan to visit all of the Museums, consider getting the Passport to Pearl Harbor ticket. This provides entrance to all of the museums but it does not include a USS Arizona Memorial reservation.

Submit a review, frequently asked questions, what is the baggage policy.

No bags of any size are allowed anywhere at Pearl Harbor. This includes backpacks, camera bags, purses, luggage, and fanny packs must all be left at the baggage storage at the entrance to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. For diaper needs, we suggest parents and caregivers include these baby items in a clear sealable under the stroller seat for clear visibility and access.

Where can I pick up my audio tour headset?

You can pick up your headset for the audio tour near the Information Desk at the Visitors Center.

Can I bring a stroller, wheelchair, or mobility device?

Pearl Harbor is an accessible site, there are no hills, and the paths are mostly flat. Wheelchairs are not available for rent at the park. There are benches placed around the visitor center and there are wheelchair locks on the US Navy navy boats to and from the memorial that sport visitors back and forth to the Memorial.

Motorized mobility devices are welcome at the Visitor Center and on US Navy Vessels, and the USS Arizona Memorial.

Strollers are welcome on site but can only go so far as the USS Arizona Memorial pre-boarding area at the Park Theater. Strollers are not permitted on US Navy vessels or the USS Arizona Memorial, please bring a baby carrier as an alternate option in these areas.

Can I bring food and beverages?

Due to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial's no-bag policy, only bring snacks and water bottles that you can carry. There is a small snack shop on site that carries various sundry snacks and cold beverages as well as restaurants throughout the area. There are water fountains located throughout the park to use or refill water bottles.

What is appropriate dress and attire?

We recommend that all visitors consider this site is for remembrance and reflection of the loss of life in service to the United States, therefore please plan for appropriate dress. Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. Military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting.

Come prepared with comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet throughout your visit, including a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are recommended.

There is a reason why the USS Arizona Memorial is the number one visited destination in Hawaii. Millions of visitors from all over the world come to this majestic setting to see where World War II began for the United States on December 7th, 1941.

This incredible self-guided, multimedia-narrated 30-60 min Tour is highly recommended to all visitors who desire a more engaging and enriching Pearl Harbor experience.

Hosted by the famous actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Pearl Harbor Survivors, and the National Park Service historians, this fascinating Narrated Tour has numerous historical stops and brings to life the events that changed the Pacific and the world forever.

Jamie Lee Curtis will guide and narrate for you through the Visitor Center’s two world-class museums, with narration aboard the USS Arizona Memorial and then along the shoreline for the incredible "Path of Attack Tour.” Hear and see firsthand stories from actual USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor Survivors as they retell their stories and retrace the events of Dec 7, 1941.

Honoring a hero: One of the last Pearl Harbor survivors dies at the age of 102

R ichard C. “Dick” Higgins, one of the few remaining survivors of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, passed away this month at the age of 102.

He died of natural causes in his Bend, Oregon, home, Angela Norton, Higgins’ granddaughter, told The New York Times . His funeral will be held on Thursday, March 28, at Eastmont Church in Bend, Oregon, at 11 a.m.

How one of the last survivors of the Pearl Harbor attacks describes the day

Higgins was a radioman assigned to a patrol squadron of seaplanes based on the Oahu naval base on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, Fox News reports .

Fox News recounts a 2008 oral history interview with Higgins, where he describes being in his barracks when the bombing began.

He described a plane flying 100 feet above his barracks with “big red meatballs” on the plane, according to a 2008 interview with the National Museum of the Pacific War. These markings are identifiers of Japanese aircraft during World War II.

“So, there was no doubt what was happening in my mind because of the things that had been going on,” he said, per Fox News .

Richard Higgins was dedicated to sharing his experiences. Together with his family, they established @quarantine_chats_with_gramps . His profile bio states, “102-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Sharing my stories before I forget them.”

On May 13, 2020, Higgins’ grandkids posted him describing the early hours of the attack. Higgins describe being awakened by bombs going off “all around.”

Higgins continues, “I got on some shoes and pants and headed down for the hangar.”

In the social media post , Higgins said a Marine held him back for the first wave of the attack. During the second wave, he bravely maneuvered planes away from each other as bombs continued to fall and gasoline fumes filled the air.

“I was moving planes away from ones that were on fire because when the tanks exploded, they threw burning gas on the others,” he said.

According to the Pearl Harbor tours website , the one-hour and fifteen-minute attack claimed the lives of more than 2,400 Americans and was the catalyst for the U.S. to declare war.

What we know about Richard Higgins, one of the last survivors of Pearl Harbor attacks

According to Fox News, Higgins was born on July 24, 1921, on a farm near Magnum, Oklahoma. He joined the Navy in 1939 and retired 20 years later. His wife, Winnie Ruth, died at the age of 82 in 2004. Higgins and Ruth were married for 60 years.

An article by USA Today highlights an interview with the National Museum of the Pacific War, where Higgins discussed living through severe dust storms during the Dust Bowl in the 1930s and the Great Depression from 1929-1939.

Fox News said Norton, Higgins’ granddaughter, shared that her grandfather was a kind man who would share his stories about Pearl Harbor, World War II and the Great Depression openly.

“It was never about him,” Norton said. “The heroes were those that didn’t come home.”

Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, said there are 22 remaining survivors of the attack that have joined the Pearl Harbor Association, per Fox News.

Norton told The New York Times that Higgins is survived by two children, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family later announced there will be a memorial service of full military honors. Following the service, his body will be flown to California, where he will be buried next to his beloved wife.

Pearl Harbor survivor Dick Higgins listens to a speaker during a ceremony at Bend High School in Bend, Ore., on Dec. 7, 2023, to honor him as well as those who died in the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. Higgins, one of the few remaining survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at his home in Bend, Ore. He was 102.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

U.S. military drains fuel from tank facility that leaked fuel into Pearl Harbor's drinking water

perl harbour tour

HONOLULU — The U.S. military said it’s finished draining million of gallons of fuel from an underground fuel tank complex in Hawaii that poisoned 6,000 people when it leaked jet fuel into Pearl Harbor’s drinking water in 2021.

Joint Task Force Red Hill  began defueling the tanks  in October after completing months of repairs to an aging network of pipes to prevent the World War II-era facility from springing more leaks while it drained 104 million of fuel from the tanks.

The task force was scheduled to hand over responsibility for the tanks on Thursday to Navy Closure Task Force-Red Hill. This new command, led by Rear Adm. Stephen D. Barnett, is charged with permanently decommissioning the tanks, cleaning up the environment and restoring the aquifer underneath.

Vice Adm. John Wade, the commander of the task force that drained the tanks, said in a recorded video released Wednesday that Barnett understands “the enormity and importance” of the job.

Wade said the new task force’s mission was to “safely and expeditiously close the facility to ensure clean water and to conduct the necessary long-term environmental remediation.”

The military agreed to drain the tanks after the 2021 spill sparked  an outcry in Hawaii  and concerns about the threat the tanks posed to Honolulu’s water supply. The tanks sit above an aquifer supplying water to 400,000 people in urban Honolulu, including Waikiki and downtown.

The military built the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility in the side of a mountain ridge to shield the fuel tanks from aerial attack. Each of the 20 tanks is equivalent in height to a 25-story building and can hold 12.5 million gallons (47.3 million liters).

A  Navy investigation  said a series of errors caused thousands of gallons of fuel to seep into the Navy’s water system serving 93,000 people on and around the Pearl Harbor naval base in 2021. Water users reported nausea, vomiting and skin rashes.

The Navy  reprimanded  three now-retired military officers for their roles in the spill but didn’t fire or suspend anybody.

Shortly after learning of the spill, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply  stopped pumping water  from the aquifer that lies under the fuel tanks to prevent leaked fuel from getting into the municipal water system. The utility is searching for alternative water sources but the Pearl Harbor aquifer was its most productive as it provided about 20% of the water consumed in the city.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
