Generally speaking a travel capsule wardrobe is a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists , and thus preventing you from overpacking .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Now depending on the length of your travels or vacation, the time of year you are traveling and the destination will depend on how many items should be included in your capsule wardrobe. However in my opinion the less the better. But be sure to pack enough so you don’t have to do laundry or buy new items at your destination.

Some ways we create out capsule wardrobes are using the following packing methods:

How to put together a Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe I always start making my wardrobe in the same way using a couple of considerations these are:

Color palettes

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits for a true minimalist closet.

Now obviously monochrome is the easiest capsule wardrobe to make as you are so limited in colors. However I find this makes my vacation photos look a bit boring, especially for vibrant summer destinations and beach destinations.

When I put together my own Summer capsule wardrobe I always gravitate towards bright colors, pastels and florals. My favorite color palettes for a Summer capsule wardrobe are:

But this is very much a personal choice and you should pick a color palette that you feel comfortable in.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times. This is why I like the sudoku method as it is the easiest method of laying out outfits.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Summer capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Summer weather. For this reason waterproof wear is not a top priority for this list. However, a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

Best Pants for your Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

The essentials on your summer capsule list are:

Linen Trousers / Linen pants

Linen trousers are a great pick for Summer no matter where you are traveling to. We like to pick linen pants in a neutral color such as cream, beige or white as they work well no matter the color you pick for your capsule wardrobe.

As you transition from your Spring capsule wardrobe into your Summer one, you will want to change the skirts and dresses you wear. Personally I like a Maxi Dress or Skirt or midi one as I find they work no matter where you are., These work even if you plan on visiting religious sites such as churches or mosques .

I also like that these are great day to night transition pieces with a little dressing up with jewelry and pashminas.

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only. They also work well for nights out where you want smarter trousers.

Although not for every destination, when we are visiting summer destinations with beaches, or outdoor activities as opposed to cities I always pack shorts.

I tend to pack smarter more tailored shorts such as chino shorts instead of short shorts or denim shorts as these work in more settings.

Best Tops for Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your Summer travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain white tee.

For Summer I tend to pack more short sleeve t shirts as opposed to long sleeve ones.

Note : For Europe in Summer I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your Summer outfit combos. But also they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

Also for cities rather than beach destinations, I tend to avoid tank tops because at some cultural institutions these are not appropriate.

Blouse / Shirt

A shirt or blouse is a great addition to a summer capsule wardobe. Again I stick with tops in natural fabrics such as cotton and linen to reduce sweat.

Personally I love a floral blouse but also think you can never go wrong with an oversized linen shirt. And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

Best Layers for your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel even in Summer. Now depending on the location will depend on the thickness you need.

However, generally speaking I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel which in Summer usually consists of:

Best Jackets for Summer Travel (Optional)

Depending on where you are going will depend on whether you need a pack-away rain jacket. For instance I would never travel to the Fjords in Norway without one, however in Spain in summer I would definitely leave this off my packing list.

Shoes for Summer Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack . However, for Summer I recommend packing just two pairs of shoes. They are:

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. Bit ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However my favorite sneakers of the moment are the Addidas Cloud Foam . These are white sneakers which are very versatile as part of a capsule wardrobe but also are very comfortable for walking long distances.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

A sandal is perfect for summer travel. Depending on how much walking you plan on doing depends whether you need something with arch support. If you do want a comfortable sandal for walking, we don’t think you can go wrong with Teva.

Best Accessories for your Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Summer travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in European cities such as Rome and Barcelona which do have pickpocket problems.

I find these types of bags give me a bit more peace of mind when traveling as they make it harder for pickpockets to get into. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

2 Weeks Travel Capsule Wardrobe Ideas: Travel Light in Europe

In this post, I’m sharing my capsule wardrobe for 2 weeks in Europe this summer, how I was only able to pack 8 clothes items for a 2-week trip in Europe while visiting two countries.

We have been staying at home most of the time during the lockdown, so in 2022 early summer, we were super excited to finally stepped outside of California and visit UK and Italy for an 18-day trip – just a little over 2 weeks! Our trip is extremely packed with itineraries, as we planned to spend only 2 to 3 days in each city before moving onto the next one.

For minimalists like me, traveling is the true test of minimalism. And what is a better challenge than planing and trying out a travel capsule wardrobe this summer? So I was determined to make it work!

Although I generally prefer to travel light, this is really the lightest we’ve been with the smallest capsule wardrobe pieces. In fact, our entire luggage was just two normal size backpacks!

What’s the selling points for traveling so light?

Traveling light with a compact travel capsule wardrobe can be very beneficial. Here are two points that stood out to me the most:

  • First of all, if I can pack everything into a backpack, it makes my travel day way easier. No need to check bags with the airlines which often comes with additional fees and waiting in lines. Besides, I don’t have to compete for the overhead luggage storage space on the airplane, as I can just slide the backpack under my seat.
  • Because we were traveling to Europe, we learnt it can be challenging to move big luggages on those old European cobble stone roads, not to mention we were constantly moving between cities.

When reading articles about travel essentials or what to pack, people usually share a comprehensive list of type of items to pack, not so much on how to select them, especially how to make sure a small selection of clothes can work with each other during your trip. So this post is dedicated to how to select a limited number of clothing pieces as your travel capsule wardrobe and create looks for your travel.

I was traveling to UK and Italy in early summer 2022, where UK was a bit chilly and Italy was very hot. So I will be using this European trip as an example for spring to summer, or summer to fall travel capsule wardrobe demonstration, but the rules and tips can pretty much apply to any season.

Essential clothes to pack for a 2-week travel

So before sharing a looks, I thought I’d walk you through what I have packed in terms of clothing pieces. Because there will be temperature variations, I was primarily relying on layering for warmth, instead of packing super warm and chunky clothes (as they will take a good amount of space).

To account for summer weather in Europe, which is really temperate to hot, I packed:

  • 2 short sleeve tops . For hot days. The V neck gingham was from Madewell with sleeve alteration .
  • 2 long sleeve tops . For moderate days, or better protecting my skin from the sun. The blue pattern top is handmade, which I’ll share a post soon.
  • 2 pairs of pants, in white and denim . This is to give more variety to my looks.
  • 1 cashmere sweater and 1 long coat . For layering and adding warmth during chilly days.

When selecting travel capsule wardrobe pieces, I made sure each clothes I’m bringing will work with at least two other pieces in the same capsule in terms of color and style. A couple tips of choosing pieces to pack for travel:

  • Stick to a color palette . Since I’ve only packed 8 pieces, I need to make sure each one will work with at least 2 pieces in the same capsule. So I’m sticking to a neutral color palette which is white, blue, and navy. Those colors also represent the majority of my wardrobe, so selecting pieces was fairly easy before the trip.
  • Make sure they layer well . For example, the tops I’ve packed are in two neck styles: crew neck and V neck. So I packed V neck cashmere sweater to layer with V neck tops(the short sleeve one and the long sleeve one). And my navy coat works for all 4 tops I have.
  • Be ready to wash your clothes from time to time . For longer trips like this one, you might need to wash some clothes so you can wear them again later in the trip. In my recent Europe trip, I have washed both the short sleeve tops and long sleeve tops which were relatively easy to wash. Just do it in an evening that you know you won’t have to change hotels the next day – so they get ample time to hang dry. I didn’t wash my pants during this trip as pants don’t get much sweat.
  • One example is about packing dress or not. I’m a dress person and love to sew dresses for myself, however, I made a decision to sticky with pants for this trip. That’s because I think pants are a bit easier to move around given how intense our trip is. But I would totally pack dress if I’m traveling to a super warm place for the entire trip.
  • Another example is packing swimsuits. So we spent a day in Capri, Italy, and one activity we did was to sail a boat around the island. It might be nice to pack swim suits so I can jump into the ocean if I want, but I decided it wasn’t worth it for me to carry my swim suits for 18 days just so I can wear them for 3 hours during sailing. At the end, we stayed on the boat and didn’t regret a bit about not packing swimwear.

Essential accessories to pack for 2-week travel

Now let’s talk about accessories and other capsule wardrobe items I brought for the 2 week trip in summer Europe. Because accessories don’t get dirty as quick as clothes, I brought one per category, except I packed an extra pair of earrings as they are so small.

I wore my sneakers to the airport so I only had to stuff my flip flops in my backpack. I’m a big fan of packing flip flops: they are quite lightweight to bring, and you can wear them in the hotel to free your feet after a long day, plus wear them after shower with wet feet.

Sun hat is useful when you are traveling to anywhere sunny. The yellow Kanken bag is my go-to luggage bag because they are extremely lightweight without sacrificing the durability.

Now with knowledge of the all clothes and accessories I included for my capsule wardrobe , here are the looks I’ve created with them for my 2 week travel in Europe this summer.

Note: This is not a comprehensive list of all the looks I have wore during this 2 week trip, but they are here to give you some ideas of how I’m layering them together without being repetitive. For example, in each look, you can swap a different pair of pants, earrings, or tops.

Now I want to share some examples of me wearing my travel capsule wardrobe for our 2-week European trip in summer 2022.

This photo was taken the first day of travel, right before we hopped on an Uber to go to the airport. I was wearing Look 5 .

When traveling by flight, I like to wear more layers:

1. To offload my luggage, so I could pack a bit more in.

2. To keep myself warm during flights as it can get quite cold.

I was wearing Look 3 in those two photos above. On the right photo, I layered V neck cashmere sweater on top.

In fact, when I’m unsure about the weather, I just pack the sweater in my backpack, enclosed in a small linen bag to protect it. This way I can take it out whenever feeling cold. They are quite lightweight too.

I was wearing Look 2 and Look 4 in those photos above. You might notice I was wearing the same top. Just by changing up the pants and adding a layer piece, they look quite different.

In Look 4 , the top layers work quite well together as they are both V neck.

Classic Clothing Items to Invest in

When curating your travel wardrobe you want to start off with good solid pieces that will interchange with many outfits. These are the pieces to invest in because they will last for your trips in years to come! Also, always remember the cardinal rule when packing: stick to a similar color palette. It makes life easier when you’re on the road. Consider this your packing list for classic items:

Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is the clothing equivalent to a good black purse. It’s a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Being that it’s lightweight, I travel with mine the majority of the time. When shopping for your trench stick to a classic style.

White Button Down

The perfect all-season staple is a white button-down . Whether you’re wearing it with jeans, a leather skirt, or simply leggings you can never go wrong with this minimalist piece. I love wearing mine through the airport with leggings or with jean shorts in the summer. Being that they will never go out of style, this is a great piece to invest in.

A classic blazer will dress up any look with its sharp silhouette! It’s no longer a staple for the office we are taking the blazer everywhere with us. You can never go wrong styling a blazer with jeans and sneakers for a casual look. Or take it out to a fancy dinner paired over a midi dress and heels. Finally, throw it on with leggings and a tee at the airport for a polished look.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers have taken the fashion industry by storm in the past few years. They have become a new classic staple and I am here for it! Not only are they comfortable but they’re uber stylish as well. You can’t go wrong with that combo and the trousers I linked come in multiple colors.

Midi Dress (Spring/Summer)

A midi dress is a perfect balance between casual and polished. For summer travel, you can easily wear it with sneakers for a day of sightseeing or paid with heels and a clutch for a night out. It’s also a very flattering silhouette to add to your closet!

Sweater Dress (Fall/Winter)

The fall equivalent of a midi dress is a sweater midi dress . A cold weather staple and one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing to travel in during the colder months. Pair with sneakers for a daytime look or high-heeled boots for a fancy dinner. It rounds out your travel capsule wardrobe perfectly.

Straight Leg Jeans

I have a love-hate relationship with jeans when it comes to traveling but they are no doubt one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can add to your wardrobe. Stick to a straight-leg style since they are very trendy at the moment. You also want a pair that fits properly or else you will be uncomfortable. Neutral Cardigan

Cardigans have been in fashion for decades. Not only that but a cardigan comes in handy during those long-haul flights and train rides. I like to pair my neutral cardi with straight-leg jeans, a tank top, and sneakers for a travel day polished look.

Trendy Pieces

Trendy pieces are a great way to round out your travel capsule wardrobe. You can easily filter these pieces in and out as you see fit. Finally, when shopping for trendy clothes I tend to go out of the box in terms of colors and patterns as I will filter out these pieces within a year or so.

Statement Blouse

A statement blouse truly makes a statement. The best part about wearing a statement blouse is you can keep your other articles of clothing simple. Let the blouse have its own moment!

Leather Trousers

Leather trousers are another hot item that has taken the fashion world by storm. I don’t see leather slowing down as a trend so pick yourself up a pair of classic pants to last years to come.

Black Split Front Pants

These split-front pants elevate any outfit but feel like leggings. Sounds like a win-win for me! Pair this with a white button-down, black booties, and throw on a trench coat and you have yourself a solid European Outfit.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Accessories

Retro sneakers.

The sneaker trend is not going anywhere so buckle up sister and buy yourself a nice pair of retro sneakers . These can easily be styled with a dress and denim jack. Or opt to wear them with split front pants and a white button-down.

Wearable Heels

I tend to only pack one pair of wearable heels when traveling to Europe. Mostly because of the cobblestone streets. They do not pair well with heels. However, if you choose a pair with a chunky heel you’ll be waltzing down those streets in style.

Black Heeled Booties

The versatility of Black Heeled Booties is endless! Whether you pair it with leather trousers and a statement blouse or opt for a more casual look with jeans and a white button-down you can trust these booties to last for years. I always splurge on accessories because they are mostly worn in my wardrobe.

Crossbody Bag

I love a good shoulder bag like the rest of the fashion world but when traveling I always carry a crossbody bag . For multiple reasons one being scams and pickpocketers. When wearing your crossbody in front of your person you are less likely to have someone rummaging through there when no one is looking. How to Dress European

The key to blending in with the Europeans is creating an outfit that has 3 elements: classic, cool, and minimalism. If you can learn this formula you will be golden. Another important thing to remember is that Europeans do not wear activewear as a leisure outfit unless they are quite literally on their way to the gym. So leave the lululemon and baseball caps at home! One of the main reasons we want to blend in as locals when traveling is because you are less susceptible to being targeted for a travel scam. Here are a few packing tips to help you dress like a European:

  • Stick to classic clothing, you can also dare to be trendy with some pieces because it is Europe after all
  • Wear neutral colors
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes that look elevated
  • Leave the athleisure wear and logos at home
  • Don’t wear jeans often, they used to be a big no-no but in recent years have become more accepted in Europe. Opt for a straight leg or wide leg pair they are tres chic
  • Alternatively, if you are wearing a feminine outfit choose a menswear-inspired shoe

Chic & Easy European Travel Packing List

Inspired by a question from long-time reader Jen in Pittsburgh (hi!), I went down a (fun) rabbit hole of searching for the perfect easy-but-chic outfits for travel. She was asking what to pack for Barcelona in late winter, and while that seems a little specific, the more I thought about it, the more I realized the packing list I was pulling together would actually apply to many destinations and seasons. (And it inspired this outfit I recently covered , too!)

What To Pack For A Trip To Europe: My Outfit Approach

The goal when I’m traveling to Europe is always to look chic and cool, to be comfy, and to look decidedly NOT like a standout tourist. And unless I’m heading to the beaches and islands or the very northern parts, I’m probably gonna bring a similar wardrobe to a variety of locales. For my style, that includes versatile pieces that layer well, can be easily dressed up or down, and have a classic, slightly sporty vibe.

While browsing some favorite sites for pieces to include in an actual list, I kept running across inspiring outfits. It hit me that this is probably a great way to approach packing lists from now on. Start with some solid style inspiration and then break down the pieces that you either already own or need to add to your collection to complete the looks. So, here’s the inspiration I started with!

My takeaways from my travel inspiration board were this:

  • classic structured jackets to layer
  • easy pants that still look polished
  • comfy but stylish shoes
  • a versatile button down (wear it buttoned up or halfway unbuttoned)
  • timeless accessories to top it all off

Of course, it’s hard not to try to solve all the world’s packing list problems every time I come out with one of these articles, but the key is to find those main problem-solving pieces and then you can fill in with your favorite additional items…like a favorite black tee or your everyday gold necklace and earrings.

Chic & Easy Outfit Inspo For Your Next European Vacation

I feel most successful with my outfits for travel when I don’t try to bring the trendy pieces I own. Those are fun to try out each season, but usually they’re more difficult to style and not as versatile.

I like that these pieces are all pretty classic. I feel confident they’d take me through many years and that they feel chic but not fussy (that’s always my goal.)

One thing I would add to this list is a gorgeous scarf or wrap. My fav is a lightweight cashmere poncho-style I can wear mostly as a scarf but with the option to wear as a wrap if needed. This is another gorgeous option here .

I have the shorts version of these easy pants from last summer, and the fabric and fit are perfection. TTS and a comfy, but structured elastic waistband that doesn’t bend or fold over. I can’t wait to try these, and I’m hoping they’ll continue to offer more colors.

I adore the belt over the layering jacket in the collage above. This one is similar, and again, classic! You could belt the pinstriped top, too. Being shorter waisted I sometimes have trouble with this accessory, but it looks so great I want to keep attempting it. I think sticking with a bit thinner belt (ie. not any thicker than this one I’ve linked) can be helpful in making it a success.

There are few jackets more classic, stylish, or versatile than the trench coat. Find a classic one you love and it will also become a forever closet piece. This one from J.Crew Factory gets good reviews, is a really timeless style, and is a reasonable price, too.

If money is no object, then you simply can’t beat the Burberry Kensington trench , especially to dance around in on a European vacation, but if you can find this Lauren Ralph Lauren option in your size, it’s a stunningly close alternative.

Please dear world of travelers, can we move away from the running-shoe-worn-with-everything phase? I believe in being diplomatic in what I cover here and we never want to say “you must do this or you mustn’t do that”, but honestly one thing that stands out so much when traveling is seeing workout shoes worn with everything. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but…a classic tennis style sneaker, an Adidas Superstar , a Tretorn (like these), an Air Force 1 , a P448 , a Golden Goose …are all going to look way less touristy-American and way more fashion-forward than the literal sneakers you workout in. Sorry sorry…rant over but haha gosh it’s a passion-project of mine 😂

I’ve found that the trick is to pack versatile pieces that mix and match effortlessly, offering a variety of looks with minimal luggage. After all, navigating cobblestone streets with heavy bags is no one’s idea of fun! Plus, packing light leaves room for those wonderful European fashion finds you’re bound to discover.

For toiletries, I choose travel-sized containers and only bring the essentials. A must-have is cross-body bag that’s perfect for day outings and elegant enough for an evening out.

With a packing list in hand that includes versatile pieces like a button-down shirt and a pair of comfortable boots suitable for a trek across cobblestones or an impromptu dance on the beach, I make sure every item in my suitcase earns its spot. Packing cubes help me organize and pack light, making my travel outfits easy to mix and match. This way, I have more room for memories and the occasional souvenir.

My Personal Opinion

For me, building a europe capsule wardrobe is essential for a relaxing and good looking vacation. It’s great to have a solid wardrobe with some different clothes which you can all combine together and with that you will have a great variety of outfits to wear.

Depending on the season it important to pack some warmer clothes for layering in winter or some light weight anf also more colorful clothes for the summer season.

The first and most important thing to consider when building your travel capsule wardrobe is…the shoes. We have to cover these first because they will determine the outfits we’re building throughout the rest of this post! The key to the perfect travel capsule is to minimize what you’re bringing and to make sure that everything you pack mix and match together. Consider your shoes as an anchor for your travel wardrobe. Starting with shoes will help you narrow down your outfit choices and plan practical, stylish outfits more easily. I recommend three pairs of neutral, versatile shoes. I recommend you pack a pair of sneakers, flats, and wedges or heeled shoe. Throughout this post, you will see these three pairs of shoes styled with every outfit… (BTW, for those that don’t like or can’t wear heels, swap the heels for another pair of flats.)

Instead of a basic pair of running sneakers, consider wearing elevated sneakers like this pair by Dolce Vita. They have cool stitching throughout and actually look very similar to my Chloe sneakers that I wear all the time…but are just as comfortable and a fraction of the price! They’re a very neutral, versatile, wearable off-white color, super comfortable, and have a small platform (1 1/2 inches) for some added height which I love .

Next, you’ll want a pair of wedges or heeled sandals for dinners or when you want to feel a little more dressed up. These wedges are also by Dolce Vita, easy to get on and off, super comfortable, and they color is so neutral that they’ll go with everything!

The white tank had a resurgence in 2022 and it’s still going strong. White tanks have never been out of style, but they’re even more popular now than ever. Plus, it’s a wardrobe basic you’ll wear beyond travel especially for layering. In the outfits above, I’m wearing a white tank by Evereve that’s SO good. It has thick enough straps that are set out a little further on the shoulder so you can still wear a regular bra with it (big win!). I paired it with some white jeans by Good American that are cropped (perfect for petites!), aren’t see-through, and are very comfortable. They run a little small, so I’d order up one size. You can see that they work perfectly with the sneakers, flats, and wedges too!

A quick note about what bottoms you pack for travel … another anchor for your travel wardrobe is your bottoms, just like shoes. This means that everything you pack for your next trip should work around your shoes and your bottoms. In this capsule, I’m featuring a pair of white jeans, a denim skirt, and black wide-leg pants. But in your travel capsule, you might include or add light-wash jeans, denim shorts, a flowy skirt, and/or white wide-leg pants…or whatever you prefer. These are simply meant to give you an idea of how your travel capsule can/should work!

Next up is a black tank by LNA that’s very soft, lightweight, and breathable. It’s super easy to throw on with whatever bottoms you’ve packed and feel stylish, put-together, and comfortable. It has a cool cutout detail at the chest, a ribbed fabric, it’s sleeveless and you can wear a regular bra! This is perfect for those super hot travel activities you have planned. I paired it with the same white Good American jeans and all three pairs of shoes. We’ll be repeating this formula to show you just how versatile each piece is and to give you ideas on how to put together your travel capsule. These first two looks are very casual and would be perfect for running errands, sightseeing, lunch, etc.

Next up is this cool Nation LTD tee. I own a few tees from this brand and love the design details they add that make them look more like blouses. They elevate a look more than a normal white tee and are much more fashion-forward. This tee has a subtle puff sleeve, ruching in the front, and a flattering v-neckline. I styled the tee half-tucked into the white jeans with a brown belt but  you could easily leave it untucked too. By the way, if you don’t love puff sleeves, Nation LTD makes so many amazing elevated t-shirt options. You can look at other styles here .

This white eyelet top by Evereve is a beautiful, high-quality piece that’s perfect for your summer wardrobe. I love the pretty eyelet details, the subtle puff sleeves, the breathable and lightweight cotton, and the length! The hemline is short enough so you can leave it untucked and it’ll still look polished.  The top could also double as your swimsuit coverup, which is a packing pro tip! 😉 I styled the top again with the white jeans and all three pairs of shoes. Next up is this blue and white striped top by LNA. I love how classic and versatile this piece is and I know I’ll wear it all summer long. One of my favorite things about this top is that there’s a button at the sleeve that allows you to raise the sleeve without actually cuffing it, which is really lovely and looks very cool. At the hemline, you can cinch it and tie it to give it a cool bubble hem look. But I cinched it, tied it, and tucked it into the same white jeans and sneakers, flats, and wedges.

Printed Blouse & White Jeans

Farm Rio is a brand I’ve fallen in love with! They make vibrant, beautiful prints in amazing high-quality fabrics… and the fits are amazing. This blouse is bold and beautiful, feels very summery and tropical, but is also very wearable. The neckline and sleeves are very flattering and forgiving. It’s also 100% cotton and very lightweight so even though it has long sleeves, it’s very breathable. (While the exact top is no longer available, I’ll link some similar options below.) I’m wearing it with the white jeans and really love this combination of the bright colors against the white. And of course…I added the brown belt and styled it with the sneakers, flats, and wedges. Are you seeing the pattern here? 😉

I wanted to give you another bottoms option that wasn’t a pair of jeans, so I’m styling a pair of black, wide-leg pants by Evereve. They are a super lightweight, sporty fabric, they have pockets, and they’re very comfortable. They have the feel of yoga pants but the look of smart, stylish trousers. These pants run a little long on me (I’m 5’4”) but you can see how they look with the sneakers and the wedges above. I styled them with 5 of the 6 tops which shows just how versatile they are! The exact pair is no longer available, but you’ll see another great pair of similar black trousers linked below. Swapping the shoes can also completely change the dressiness of these pants. You can also see in the last two looks that styling the pants with the black tank and simply changing the shoes from sneakers to wedges really elevates it and makes it a dressier look you could wear to a nice dinner.

As I mentioned above, your capsule wardrobe can include whatever bottoms you prefer. You can even add a few extra bottoms like a skirt, denim shorts, or light-wash jeans. But for this travel capsule, I’m sharing this Agolde denim mini skirt. When I first ordered this, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it…but as it turns out… I LOVE it! It’s more comfortable than denim shorts, it has a cool pointed hemline, and I love the fit. I did size up one size and it fits perfectly. You can wear this skirt with pretty much anything this summer. First, I’m wearing it with the white tank, which is something that’s a little more youthful and shows a lot of skin, but you can easily add a cardigan or lightweight blazer to add coverage. I’d wear this on really hot sight-seeing days!

Next up is the black LNA tank with the fun cutout styled with the denim shirt. I love the combination of the black tank with the brown belt…yes, you CAN wear black and brown together! It’s a beautiful color combo you shouldn’t shy away from. And again…this look is fabulous with the sneakers, wedges, and flats!

The denim skirt also works with the Nation LTD white tee AND the sneakers, wedges, and flats.

Next, the white eyelet top. You can easily tuck this into the denim skirt for an effortlessly cool look. If you’re worried about getting hot, wear the white tank underneath and open up the top for even more breathability.

This striped top also works so well with the denim skirt! I love this combination so much because of the juxtaposition of the more masculine shirt and the feminine skirt. It’s such a gorgeous combination! Style it with the sneakers for a long day of walking, with the sandals for a casual lunch when you want to feel comfortable, or the wedges for a dressier lunch or when you just want to feel a little more elevated.

Lastly, I’m wearing the printed Farm Rio dress with the mini skirt, brown belt, and all three pairs of shoes!

I wanted to share a piece you can bring with you on your trip that will easily transition from day to night and feels a little dressier. This black Evereve jumpsuit is something you could wear to a dressier dinner. It’s SO good. The top fits snugly so you will feel very secure, and you don’t have to do any yanking or pulling. You tie it at the back and you’re good to go…you don’t even have to wear a bra! The fabric is ruched and thick enough at the top, so you feel very covered up. But it’s still very soft on the skin, lightweight, and breathable. Plus, it’s very wrinkle-resistant, a must for travel. The bodice is fitted, which is a great contrast to the flowy bottoms. The best part about this jumpsuit is the hemline…because it’s a little shorter, I can wear it with sneakers during the day and swap my shoes with the wedges for a dressy, sexier look at night. The newest version of this jumpsuit has bra-friendly straps and all the same flattering features. Linking it below!

The last piece is this gorgeous dress by Farm Rio. It’s a bit of a wild card but I love to throw one special piece like this into my suitcase whenever I travel. It’s important to have a piece that you’re excited to wear and that makes me feel happy and beautiful. The beautiful thing about this dress is that you can wear it from day to night and with all three of the shoes I’ve featured. I love the fun, vibrant print, the flattering empire waist, and adjustable tie shoulder straps. It’s also smocked in the back, so you have some room and it’s very comfortable. The fabric is 100% cotton so it’s lightweight and breathable, perfect when you want a flowy, breezy look for your hot summer vacation.

Jewelry & Accessories for travel

My approach to jewelry and accessories during travel is to bring impactful pieces that aren’t too over the top. In all of these looks, I’m wearing two pieces of jewelry by Gorjana. The first is this cool chain necklace that packs just the right amount of punch. The second is a pair of classic gold hoops , which you really can’t go wrong with! I also showed a brown belt with most of the looks. It’s a simple way to add polish and style to every outfit. Because the rest of the travel capsule is so minimal, you will have space in your suitcase to add more jewelry if you want. I would probably also add a few bracelets, another pair of more glam earrings, and a statement necklace.

I would also add two pairs of sunglasses, one black and one brown pair. Also, make sure that one is a more glam option (like oversized square frames) and one is sportier (like aviators). If you have the room, I’d definitely add a dress or two, maybe an extra pair of shoes, a hat, and some extra bottoms options. But, again, if you want to keep things minimal, this is plenty! And, as I said above, you’ll even have room for shopping!

Thank you for this post and video. I really like that you showed how each item mixed and matched with each other. Most of the time I find my capsule boring, but adding that pop of color in the colorful blouse nod the blue pinstripe shirt gives a wide variety of looks. I’ll be going to a destination wedding next month in Prague, Czech Republic and later a river cruise to a few Eastern European countries. I’m looking into my closet to see what I can come up with. I think this may be the best packing I’ll do for a trip. I’ll have to wait until August to see what the weather will be like. You have given me some wonderful ideas!

Finally a practical stylish travel capsule! Yes Molly, you can wear white pants-Tide Stick! Plus you have a back up of black pants. I just returned from 2 months travel with one carry on. Shoes are always the toughest packing bulk. I cheat with a small foldable shoe bag packed away. I then wear the bulkiest shoes-booties or my tennis shoes-into my backpack that goes under the seat. This is a great starting point for packing for a summer trip. Which combination would you wear on the plane and what outerwear/layer would you bring? It’s always cold on the plane, in restaurants and it isn’t always 80degrees and sunny.

I’ve got a whole video specific to “Travel Day” coming in a few weeks that will cover all of these details better, but I’d go with the sneakers (always wear your biggest/heaviest shoes on travel day – plus they are comfy!) black pants, and black tank with a jacket or blazer as a third layer as well. I’d definitely add one jacket to this list to have the cooler temps/ AC covered! ~Erin xo

I can’t imagine keeping all of that white clean during travel especially the pants. My life style means more kid friendly/dirt resistance. I love the look of white on white. Just super impractical.

As avid travelers, we firmly believe in packing light (as light as possible, in fact). Flying with just a carry-on and packing cubes can save tons of time and energy – and help you side-step some major headaches, including lost baggage and heavy suitcases you have to drag up a flight of stairs.

But when you only have a small suitcase, and as a result – only a few pieces to work with – figuring out what to pack and how to plan outfits can be tricky.

How do you keep your wardrobe incredibly limited without surrendering your style? How do you pack only a few key items, while maintaining versatility in your outfits?

Working from a capsule wardrobe is your best bet. Sticking with basic separates in neutral colors goes a long way for creating a variety of outfits with limited items.

If you are packing for a combination of business and pleasure in the same trip, it becomes all the more important to choose well-made styles that can be dressed up or dressed down with a few accessories.

How do you build a tight wardrobe without adding too many pieces? How do you keep your suitcase lean without choosing only safe, boring and basic options – and steering clear of going too far the other way, packing stylish pieces that you’ll only ever end up wearing once?

Let’s look at a few essential tips…

The answer is to follow one simple rule – the rule of 3. This is more than wearing every piece you pack at least 3 times. Pack all items with the intention of wearing each item in a variety of outfits that work in at least three different occasion types.

This could be dressy, professional, and casual. Or it could be sexy, relaxed, and polished. It all depends on your lifestyle and the nature of your trip. When you consider using each piece with this kind of versatility, you’ll be able to build a stylish capsule wardrobe for any trip, and have tens of great outfits on-hand for any occasion.

Take, for example, a pretty tank top like the wine-colored one shown above. It can be paired with a relaxed skirt and a blazer for a casual business event.

However, just as easily, it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town with a slim pair of jeans and a cool rocker-inspired choker and cross-body bag .

And third, the tank looks just as stylish with a beach babe pair of cut-off denim shorts, boho-inspired travel sandals and a straw hat – on point for a summer musical festival.

Now that you know how to use one piece in three different ways, follow these guidelines to make the most of your outfits.

Be Meticulous With Fit

Stick to flattering, figure-skimming silhouettes. Avoid anything with too tight of a fit, as it won’t appear relaxed or chic. Likewise, avoid anything with a loose fit since it can read as sloppy and unpolished. Don’t be afraid to tailor your clothing, especially when it’s something you absolutely love!

Stick to Classic Styles With a Hint of Trend

Choose fairly neutral colors and simple cuts and patterns for versatility and longevity, but look for unique twists that add visual interest. This could be lace detail, embroidery, funky zippers – anything that expresses your personality.

File Into 3 Occasion Buckets

When you’re shopping for new items or pulling items from your closet to pack, mentally file each item into its occasion bucket. Is it sexy, relaxed, and girly? Or is it business-casual, classic, and refined? Hint: this rule also works really well outside of travel packing for your everyday wardrobe, too.

Don’t Forget to Map Your Outfits

Particularly with separates, make sure you can pair each item with several other items you’ve packed. It doesn’t help you if you can wear a cute embroidered blouse to the museum, a nice dinner, and on the plane but haven’t any bottoms you can pair with the top.

Have Fun With Accessories

Follow the same rule of 3 with accessories, including bags, shoes, jackets, and jewelry. Shop for high-quality, versatile pieces that are fairly classic in design but have a fun flair. For shoes, all you need are three pairs: one for sightseeing, one for a special activity, and a bonus pair.

Or, pair the dress with white sneakers , a summer hat, and a super-cute canvas tote for a breezy look to wear when visiting a local farmers market.

Summer is on the horizon, and I'm already thinking about the vibe I'm looking to champion for the warmer weather. Calling All Americans: Build Your European Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whether you’re seeing the sights in Rome, basking in the sun in Barcelona or indulging in the delicacies of Paris, planning for a trip to Europe is both exciting and stressful.

Whether you only just bought your tickets or have already sent out a minute by minute itinerary to everyone on your trip, it’s never too early to plan your outfits. The solution to the stress and - let’s face it - fear of dressing up in Europe is planning ahead with a European Travel Capsule Wardrobe!

We’ve all heard that Europeans can be, well - a bit judgy about what Americans wear. But as an Italian born in London, who spends a considerable amount of time each year in Portugal, and has traveled Europe many times over, I am here to help you pack for your trip to Europe so that you feel as confident as you possibly can walking in heels down cobblestone streets. 

Sure, seeing the Palace of Versailles is breathtaking, but doing it in a great outfit makes it even more magical. What we wear is often just as important as what we are doing when it comes to making feel-good memories, and don’t let any guy with a microphone wearing a lumberjack shirt tell you otherwise. Allow yourself to fully experience the fantasy of the new places you visit. You earned this vacation! 

This is not a guide on ‘How to Dress European’ or ‘How to Dress for France/Italy/Greece’, designed to sell you one-time use outfits that make you look like you just stepped off the set of The White Lotus. We’re looking for a middle ground between fully fanciful Emily in Paris and proudly practical Rick Steves. It’s more about what you should wear in Europe. You’ll learn the big no-nos of European style (there are a few) and how to match the European fashion energy - all while packing efficiently. But first, let's get back to basics.

There is no one-size-fits-all travel capsule wardrobe and you won’t find a “Europe Travel Essentials Checklist” here because we don’t want you to waste money on things you’ll wear once on this trip and never again. Instead we are sharing a system that guides you along creating a travel capsule wardrobe from the things you already own that is unique to you and your travel needs

The purpose of a travel capsule wardrobe is to remove the stress associated with packing and styling outfits while you’re traveling. While we may not all be 20 year-olds backpacking our way through Europe, creating a travel capsule wardrobe for your European vacation is ideal for anyone who wants a convenient way to look stylish. Not to mention you could save hundreds on baggage fees - and even more valuable, save yourself the embarrassment of dragging a large suitcase through cobblestone streets. Which is, without a doubt, beyond whatever you wear, the easiest way to be spotted as an American tourist.

How Is A European Travel Capsule Wardrobe Different?

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe is an adaptable system for any destination, but we felt it important to focus on the specific tips for traveling to the most fashionable continent in the world. We want to make sure you avoid all the fashion faux pas and are dressed in the latest mode du jour - excuse my française. 

Whether you’re as seasoned a European traveler as Rick Steves or this is your first time across the pond, you’ve likely heard that Europeans can quickly spot Americans. While yes, that is true, it has nothing to do with “dressing European”. Scandinavians dress wildly differently from people who live around the Mediterranean. And Italians dress drastically differently from Spanish people, or French people or Portuguese people - all Mediterranean. There is no one “European style” to conform to.

It has more to do with the stark difference in the relationship with clothes in America versus Europe. In Europe, there is deeper respect for the craftsmanship of making clothes that has been built over centuries, so there is also more of a culture of getting dressed up. Don’t think of dressing for your trip to Europe as a way to fit in, but rather to dress up as much as you like and to actually wear those items you’ve been “saving” for the right occasion. This is it!

Style: Dressed Up

The French are chic, the Italians are whimsical and tailored, the Spanish are bohemian and the Scandinavians are minimalists. There is no single “European style”. But given that it is a much more densely populated region than America, Europe has more of a cosmopolitan sensibility. Most people live in or very close to large cities, and therefore there is a tendency for people to dress more formally - at least compared to the American default of hyper-casual styling.

The first thing we have to get out of the way are a series of no-no’s that will immediately make you stand out as an American tourist: 

No athletic clothes or athleisure

No running shoes, unless you’re going on a literal run or hike

No fanny packs (unless you’re a 14 year old boy in England, where this is actually very stylish…but odds are this isn’t you)

No khaki shorts

No big logos

American fashion culture values comfort above all else, and while that’s all great for your everyday run to Target, it’s just not the European way. A Parisian woman would probably rather starve to death than pick up groceries in sweatpants and Uggs. Honestly, I have never seen any of my family members in Italy even wear sweatpants. I’m not even sure it’s legal to sell them there.

I really do appreciate the more casual approach to fashion in the U.S. on a day to day basis, but in Europe there are no casual days. Everyday is cause for celebration - especially when you’re on vacation!

Fit: Tailored

In general Europeans prefer a tailored fit while Americans often opt for looser clothing. While Americans will typically only take occasion wear to the tailor if absolutely necessary, Europeans are usually on a first name basis with their local tailors. But don’t confuse tailored with tight! 

When shopping with my nonna - Italian for grandma - she would always have us stop by her tailor with our shopping bags to drop off all my clothes so they would fit me perfectly. This is one of the best ways to elevate your everyday outfits , and your upcoming trip to Europe can be a great excuse to try it out. You don’t have to take every item you own to the tailor, but a few select blazers, trousers, or dresses are a good place to start.

Fabrics and Quality: Mix & Match

Not every European is buying all their clothes from Celine or Gucci, but they do often look expensive. The trick is to mix-and-match your brands (high-end and high-street), as well as your fabrics so that there is always at least one more elevated component in your outfit. An inexpensive polyester top can look very expensive with linen shorts and an unbuttoned silk shirt. 

One of the most popular outfits I see Americans wearing in Europe is jeans and a casual top. Denim is a very casual fabric, so make sure to pair it with something more elevated. We’ve already covered what you can’t wear, so everything else is fair game as long as you style it thoughtfully.

Silhouettes: Find Balance

Balance is key. No one in Europe is looking at Carrie Bradshaw as a fashion icon because her looks are just *too* over the top for their sensibilities. Not even the Milanese, arguably the most fashionable people in Europe. 

Let’s take the example of tight fitting clothing as we mentioned above. If you choose to wear a tight tube top or bandeau top, your bottom should then be more flowy. Europeans put a lot of thought into each component of an outfit, which is what makes building a Europe travel capsule wardrobe essential to ensure that you can create the same elegant balance.

Accessorizing

Many of my American friends have a set of jewelry they wear daily on repeat. Europeans do not. Accessories are used to complete an outfit, you're not done until you've chosen which jewelry, scarf, belt, and bag most flatters your outfit. Efficiency isn’t in the European vocabulary, not for fashion, not for food and not for family. 

But of course you can’t take all your jewelry with you, nor should you. The other key to accessorizing like a European is to not wear tons of jewelry. Accessorizing is a delicate art and while some looks call for layers of necklaces and several rings, an elegant little black dress can do without. 

I often feel conversations about how people from Europe and Asia dress as opposed to Americans can sound pejorative but the truth is that on a global scale, American brands are just as competitive and stylish as their Asian and European counterparts. I mean, America did win the Battle of Versailles , a battle fought with couture and stilettos on French home soil. And American fashion continues to lead the world in influence - for example, cowboy boots are a current staple of fashion shows in Milan, Stockholm and Tokyo. 

So, there is no need to hide your style. This is more about making sure that in an attempt to embrace European culture you look a little less try-hard like Emily in Paris and a little more effortless like Sylvie in Paris. And more importantly, that you enjoy the experience of dressing up as the Europeans do.

How To Build A European Travel Capsule Wardrobe

If you can’t contain your excitement any longer, I’m happy to tell you we’ve gotten to building your European Travel Capsule Wardrobe! We’ll take what we’ve already discussed and build it into practical steps that will make packing your bags easy and useful for when you are picking out outfits.

1. Understand any specific requirements for your destination

You might be thinking…didn’t we just talk about this? We did. But as you may know, Europe is not a country and doing some basic research on the specific places you will be visiting is important. 

Summer in Greece is vastly different from summer in England. You can still feel warm in the pouring Mykonos rain, whereas in London you’ll get quite chilly. Additionally, while Europe is generally a safe place, there are some locations where you have to be more aware of pickpockets.

The other thing to keep in mind is that there is a variability of dress codes within Europe. For example, the French are known for requiring a certain degree of formality, especially at beach clubs. While in Berlin, head to toe black is the only way of experiencing the city's infamous nightlife. 

FYI, it is best to do your research on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to see what people are actually wearing in those countries. Google’s algorithm will tend to surface articles that will make you very fashionable for 2015.

2. Consider what activities you’ll be doing

Will you be hiking in Switzerland or scuba diving in Greece? It is time consuming and stressful to try and find the things you need the day before or the day of an activity. The best way to start your packing list is to list out the things you need to take. 

You don’t need to have a minute by minute breakdown of your activity, but it is useful to list out a general outline, say 3 evening outfits, 4 beach looks, 2 sightseeing ensembles, etc. Trust me, this will only make it easier as you get to building your Europe packing list. 

3. Narrow down your color palette

Some people like to say that Europeans prefer more subdued hues but I think that is a generalization of European style being French style. Italians love vibrant colors, Spaniards tend to like earthy tones, Scandinavians play with pastels and some vibrant spring hues, and Germans, well… they do prefer a more lowkey look, but even they like a pop of color here and there. 

An easy color hack is to keep to around 3 colors in an outfit, which means that on a trip you don’t want to be taking more than 5-6 different colors. These don’t have to be “boring colors”. You can take very colorful clothes, but keeping them in the same tone (e.g., muted, vibrant, jewel-toned, etc.) will make mixing and matching much easier, which is critical for a travel capsule.

Having said that, even Italians usually have one neutral color in every look. It helps create that balance we spoke about and makes it a lot easier to play with colors. So consider taking at least one bottom and one top that is in a neutral color, as this will ensure that all of your clothes have at least one other item they can be styled with. 

4. Stick to your everyday style…just a little more elevated

You don’t have to entirely change how you dress! The truth is, you aren't European, contrary to what most girls studying abroad in Barcelona may think. There is no *need* to hide that you're American, and no need to hide your style. 

Not to mention, it would be impossible to switch your style to each destination you go to. Spanish people don’t change their style when visiting Vienna, Scottish people don’t change their style when visiting Greece, why should you change yours?

We just want to make sure you don’t completely stick out like a sore thumb, and the key difference is elevating your baseline style to be a little more formal and tailored, as those are the defining characteristics of all European fashion styles. Lucky for you, simply leaving the athleisure at home is already half the battle.

5. Start with a basic selection of items in a 5-4-2-2-2 ratio

Without making an unnecessary mess, head over to your digital wardrobe and identify the items that are most ideal for your trip. You may find yourself wondering just how many tops or bottoms to bring? Did I overpack? Or did I not pack enough!?

As a starting point, think about sticking to the ratio of 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 layers, 2 shoes and 1 dress, but take this only as a suggestion of how many items to bring. 

I actually suggest for a summer European trip that you take one less layer and one more dress. Summer in Europe is hot , and we do not use as much air conditioning in our buildings or ice in our drinks as Americans. And, there aren’t really that many occasions that require you to cover up, unless you are visiting the Vatican (pay attention in Step 1!). 

6. Practice styling outfits

Once you have a list of items you are considering taking, you can start building outfits! Instead of making a complete mess of your closet by trying different pieces on, just use your digital wardrobe to easily swap items and create new looks. After all, if you can’t build a few outfits with them, then there is no point in taking them. 

A good rule of thumb is that each item you take should work in at least three different outfits. You may find your initial list of items changes as you find pieces that are more versatile, and that’s okay - it shows the system is working!

Once you have your base outfits, you can start playing around with accessories. I am someone who can go a little bag crazy, but they can take up a lot of space in your suitcase, so my suggestion is to take one smaller statement bag and one more capacious neutral bag. Test all of your outfits out with at least one of your bags. 

When it comes to accessories, a silk scarf can be a very versatile accessory to bring to Europe. You can wear it as a belt, around your neck, to cover your hair, to accessorize your bag or even as a top. Lastly, when it comes to jewelry, striving for two sets that transition from day to night will have you covered for all occasions.

7. Generate your packing list

Italy is a very popular destination in the summer, and what's not to love? I know I’m probably biased given that I am Italian and go home at least once a year but the numbers of tourists don’t lie. With so many people traveling for the 3 F’s of Italy - food, fashion and Ferrari - let me show you my packing list for Italy.

With just these 15 pieces I can make over 40 different outfits, but here is a sample of 5 of my favorites!

From walking around Milan, to a sunset sail in Sicily, by pre-planning my travel capsule I can do it all with just this short list of items - I could probably manage it in just a carry-on bag! I could also use this same packing list for a trip to Portugal, Spain, France or Greece with no drastic changes. 

While I am a seasoned traveler myself, I have often struggled with packing. I tend to add things at the last minute “just in case”. But, I usually end up stressed about my bag weight and with only a few outfits I really like. Now, I enjoy collecting packing lists on the Indyx app just like boarding passes on the Wallet app. There is an idea that Europeans are just effortlessly stylish, but there is actually a lot of thought behind it - which is now made easy through a digital wardrobe.

The 12-Piece Travel Wardrobe

I’ve used black, white, grey, and navy/denim for the neutral base, and I’ve added some blue and olive as secondary colors. All of the tops work with all of the bottoms. On the off-chance that it’s still cool enough for a lightweight scarf, I’m bringing three to add some pops of bright color. (The lightweight cashmere wrap is intended mostly for chilly airline cabins, but you never know.)

Some caveats…I don’t count shoes, outerwear, accessories, sleepwear or “underpinnings” as part of my 12 items. And I give myself the option to add a “wild card” piece (or two) at the last minute, based on weather forecasts and my mood. I’ll also be bringing several items for a special project that aren’t part of my regular travel wardrobe, so am taking a larger suitcase this time that I’ll be checking. And, I’m sorry the color in these photos is wonky…even with natural light it’s hard to get the balance right. One of these days I’m going to invest in a professional lighting set.

So let’s break it down….

12-piece summer travel wardrobe

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I wanted to include at least two lightweight collared shirts for warmer days. I’ve also included a lightweight silk blouse for evenings, one lightweight sweater and three long- or 3/4-sleeved tees. I usually plan for twice as many tops as bottoms.

Left side, from top to bottom:

  • Linen button-front shirt, Eileen Fisher ( similar ). This is a fuller, longer shirt, but nicely fitted through the shoulders and arms.
  • Lightweight cotton button-front shirt, J.Crew ( similar ).
  • Silk zip neck blouse, Theory ( similar ).

Right side, top to bottom:

  • Slub cotton v-neck tee, Velvet.

I always “start with the shoes” when planning a travel wardrobe, and because the weather’s been so changeable, selecting footwear for this trip has really been a challenge! I usually limit myself to three pairs (including what I wear on the plane) but may sneak in a fourth, something that will be better suited to wet days. Stay tuned…

  • Metallic sneakers, taos.
  • Wedge sandals, Mephisto. (These have adjustable bands over toe strap as well as ankle, and nice arch support. I often find a low heel more comfortable than a flat.)
  • Wedge pumps, Belle by Sigerson Morrison a couple of years old, ( similar ). These are evenings-only shoes, but we do have a few planned activities that call for a step up from casual.

Wild Card and Outerwear

At the eleventh hour, I stumbled upon this linen dress and it’s PERFECT. It will be lovely on warm days, and if cooler I can wear over my black knit ankle pants. Yes, its rumpled (right out of the dryer), but I like it that way. Linen Expressing Its True Nature. It can also be steamed out a bit. The sleeves roll up with a tab, but can also be worn down.

  • Water-resistant utility jacket, Sandro (mine’s a few years old , similar here)

I also stick with neutral colors and tops and bottoms that all go with each other. I spent a lot of time thinking about my travel wardrobe this year, and it has really become a summer capsule wardrobe of sorts as I’ve been trying everything out.

It’s always interesting to see what others pack. I find summer trips the hardest to pack for when the weather can be so changeable. I remember packing for Ireland in July when it was 32 degrees Celsius here and 18 there. It was so hard to NOT pack shorts and sleeveless tops. And a light scarf I threw in at the last minutes saved me on cool rainy days when I would have liked a turtleneck.

I’m curious what you will wear if the temperature skyrockets and it turns really hot when you’re in France. Also pretty darned curious about that “special project” you’ve mentioned.

Hi Susan, the linen and cotton shirts and the dress should be good for the heat. I wore a similar shirt to the white one almost daily in Hong Kong when temperatures were around 85F/30C and humid, and was quite comfortable. Special Project will be revealed in time. 😉

The weather range you’re facing is tough to pack for, but as usual, it looks as if you’ve got it covered (although like Sue Burpee, I wonder how you’ll fare if you get five or six days in a row of 85/30 plus temps — worst that might happen is you’d have to buy something — not so horrid an option, really . . .) Really looking forward to following your travels and seeing that Special Project unveiled.

One question I don’t think you have touched on: what do you wear on the plane? And, do you wear that outfit/pieces again during trip? I am SO tired of a travel outfit that I generally cannot bear to look at it again! So, are any of these pieces (the bottoms..) what you will be wearing for the long haul? Would love to know your thoughts on that!

Still sorting that out, have decided my heavier cashmere cardi may be overkill. But I’ll probably wear my straight leg crepe pants, a tee and linen cardigan. I’m beginning to wear/take both a lightweight merino cardigan and a linen overshirt (in colors compatible with each other and my base shirt & pants) with me to work in a variable-temperature office in the summery upper midwest. I commute two miles on foot in the morning, adding sometimes a midday walk, sometimes a mile walk on the commute home. “Be prepared . . .”

July weather in London and Paris can really go to extremes. If it rains, you can be miserably cold. If it’s hot, it’s humid there (unlike the south, where it just stays hot but dry and surprisingly comfortable). You might be wearing two tops and a jacket every day or never touching a jacket. You really need maximum versatility and not beat yourself up if you have great weather and end up having packed things you don’t wear. Also, keep space in your luggage so you can buy things during the trip. With the weak pound, London is finally not so outrageously expensive. And the soldes are going on in France. Clothes make great souvenirs!!!!

I have been following you for a few months, and thoroughly enjoying your posts. Little did I know then that I would soon be traveling to Paris, as well! My daughter received a scholarship to study in France for a few weeks, and I am meeting her in Paris for 10 days. This is my first time visiting. I will be about 2 weeks behind you, and I am LOVING seeing your wardrobe choices. It does look like the weather is hard to predict at this time. Those EF stretch crepe pants are black, right? They look like midnight on my computer so does the EF jacket, and I know she makes them both in midnight, but You’ve always referenced them in the black. Just wondering if you’ve added midnight to the mix.

Last trip I took to London Paris was in late June early July, a river cruise on the Rhone, Saone and Seine. Provence was quite warm, like an inland CA valley, Paris was comfortable, and Rouen was rainy and chilly. I had followed one of your capsules, and found that I had everything I needed, although I did check my bag so that I could take extra pieces. I can’t thank you enough for the guidance you have provided over time, in many more things than simply clothing advice.

We likes pocketses! And what a lovely wardrobe! I’ve had the best wardrobe success when I’ve packed for the hottest temperature I’ll encounter. If it gets cooler I’ll add filament weight silk underlayers to the warm weather clothing. I’ll bring a thermal singlet, a silk 3/4 sleeve undershirt, leggings or silk long johns. I’ll usually start off with these as a base layer. If it gets warmer during the day I’ll sneak into the ladies room, remove the underlayers, and put them into a quart sized Baggie I’ve stored in my purse. I always have to restrain myself when packing. I’ll usually limit myself to 4-5 shirts, 2 pants, a skirt, a dress, and 2 sweaters. I’ve found that creating a wardrobe on Polyvore and sticking to it keeps me on track.

Bon voyage and have a wonderful time. We just returned last night from 2.5 weeks in France and it was humid in Paris, chilly and a tad humid in Mont St Michel and Normandy, and hot and humid in Avignon and the French Riviera. My family joked that we sweated our way through France. Enjoy the food and the sights!!

I have two comments to share -having been in london 2 weeks ago, I thinks it’s smart to pack enough warm stuff. if you don’t (like I didnt ) it will be hard to find in the stores, whereas picking up a summer tip in case it’s warmer than expected is easy. coming from California also, I found the temp of 65, when it’s cloudy and damp to feel much cooler than 65 does in my hometown. My other tip is to download the Mobile Passport app for your return to the usa. We sped through immigration in a special line and were out in no time! if you are in Chelsea, I highly recommend the Ivy Garden for a meal. good food and a beautiful garden in back.

We traveled to London in late June two years ago. I found that I enjoyed having a lightweight trench coat which kept me comfortable for cool mornings and evenings. The coat I took was black and went well with everything. Since I don’t wear jeans when traveling, I especially enjoyed several pairs of knit Eileen Fisher pants–including the crepe pants you mention.

This is a a great travel wardrobe, Susan, with many exceptional pieces (EF sweater with side buttons, the cashmere wrap, the silk long jacket). Have a marvelous time…Bon voyage!

My $.02: was just in London last week. I didn’t pack exactly right. We spent 4 days in London, then 5 days in Portugal. I got the Portugal clothes right, but London was chilly and rainy; I didn’t have the right footwear, for one thing. I had never been there before in the “summer”, only in early spring and late fall. Ended up buying a lightweight trenchcoat at Barbour (which I love, so not complaining), but will now be on the hunt for summery, yet comfy and sturdy, footwear for NEXT time. Thinking a slip-on perforated leather shoe in a light neutral might be the ticket. That said, there were some awesome sales on, so if you need to pick up anything…..

I had one day mostly to myself, but it was raining hard, so I just went to Selfridges on Oxford Street. You can spend hours in there & still not see it all. Plus they have at least one restaurant or bar on each floor! And the food hall…..WHY don’t we have those in the States?

Although your choices all go together I must say I find it just too neutral. I would include more than a “pop” of color but something that really is another color. For example, there are cute, comfortable Capri or shorter casual pants out there (jag brand for instance). A rose or peachy shade would go with every top, every jacket and every pair if shoes you are taking but add some variety to the mix without taking much space. Practical is good but travel is about adventure and new things too! I travel a lot for business(and pack small) and always, always get compliments on a pair of orange/ peach pumps I wear with a conservative navy business dress. Have a lovely trip! Regardless of the temperature, I’m sure it will be great.

This is much like what i would pack for a similar trip, and in fact, I took just this trip a year and a half ago (wet and very cold in London, unseasonably hot in Paris). I would never wear such a jacket when traveling (although I rarely wear jackets at home either), and I would never take a trip anywhere without a cardigan sweater (linen seems not warm enough for the possiblility of damp coldweather in London, and while cashmere seems to warn while you sit in LA, it is a year round fabric in the UK). Mine would be a longer, boyfriend style cardigan, with pockets, and I would wear it on the plane because they are always freezing, and I would wear it in the hotel room over my sleepwear, as well as on the street if if was cool.

I greatly admire your disciplined approach to packing, Susan, and your control of items. I’m just back from a trip to Copenhagen and I am ashamed to say that I wore only 20% of what I packed, which means I packed way too much. Silly me, when will I learn?! I don’t see a cardi in the pics – good luck with that. It’s grey with below average temperatures here in Sussex at the moment, I’m wearing a cardi – indoors! But I’m sure it will warm up again soon. Susan, I bought that EF linen Henley dress (or an earlier version of it) last year on sale and love, love, love it! I’m wearing it tonight to a Canada Day dinner party and will take along lightweight-white-skinny-ankle-length jeans to wear under if it’s cool outside. My only issue is what to wear over it in cooler weather. The 3/4 wide sleeves don’t fit that well under shirts or sweaters. What have you tried that works?

This so called summer in Europe has been more like fall than spring: Very wet and windy. I would definitely consider another pair of walking shoes for rainy days and definitely take the water resisitant coat.

Do you any suggestions for traveling one week to China? August in Shanghai and Beijing, it’s going to be extremely hot and humid.

Hi Joan, I’m a fan of loose-fitting linen pieces. An oversized linen shirt has become one of my warm weather travel “musts.” If you’re going to wear sandals, choose a comfortable pair with an absorbent footbed, and straps that can adjust.

Getting ready for my Europe trip last summer , one of the most common questions that friends and family asked was, “How do you pack for a trip like that?” Whether you’re traveling for ten days or three months, packing for an overseas trip isn’t easy – in the spring or summer, you want to be prepared for rain and shine, and still be able to feasibly carry your luggage through narrow cobblestone streets, up flights of stairs, and onto trains and ferries.

I’m a supporter of the capsule wardrobe , especially for travel. Aside from saving time, space, and money, packing a capsule wardrobe always helps me find new ways to wear the clothes I already own.

Designing Your Travel Capsule

First, take a look at what destinations and activities are planned for your trip, and the pieces in your closet that would work best – a few dresses, a favorite top, the most comfortable sandals. Lay everything out (or use this wardrobe app ), and you’ll probably see things starting to come together – including a color palette that will help you mix-and-match. If you see some gaps (like a lack of summer skirts, or a need for new sandals), you’ll know exactly what to shop for.

For twelve weeks abroad, my suitcase looked something like this:

As you can see, there are about 20 different outfits in just a few packing cubes . Because we were moving from place to place about once a week, we needed to be able to fit things like shampoo, toothpaste, and sunscreen into our suitcases – which meant one checked bag and one carry-on each. But if you’re staying in one spot on your trip (or just spending a week or two), plan on buying your toiletries after you arrive – it will be so much easier to get around with less!

Fill in The Gaps

Tops: A mix of tops in a variety of lightweight fabrics means easy summer layering.

Bottoms: Skirts are my favorite, but shorts and jeans are great neutral pieces for easy traveling.

Dresses: I love summer dresses , and wore them for everything from road tripping to fancy dinners. 

Jackets: Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean it’s always warm and sunny – bring an extra layer or two.

Shoes: You’ll probably be walking a lot on your Europe trip, so pack comfortable sandals , espadrilles, flats and sneakers. Add in something slightly less practical for when you want to feel fancier.

Accessories: For traveling, markets, and beaches, bring a tote bag. For everything else, carry a crossbody purse. Sunglasses are necessary of course, and a few pieces of jewelry go a long way for feeling put together.

Style at a certain age.

yesterday, i shared my five must-have travel wardrobe staples and my goal to pack light for our trip to europe. read it here  if you missed that post. today, it’s all about my black and white capsule wardrobe. but first, here are a few items that make it into my carry-on. don’t ever pack anything other than clothes and toiletries in your checked luggage; anything of value is kept close. for this trip, i splurged and purchased a new marc jacobs floral print sport tote. it’s polyurethane and easily wiped down. it has two sets of handles – long and short – and a zipper. since my wardrobe color palette is black and white, i went for a pop of color and pattern with my handbag. an elegant  michael kors wallet with a flip lock flap closure keeps me organized. but this is what typically finds its way inside my travel tote.

a survival kit for the long airplane ride is a must. this is what i carry at all times, wherever I go.

three jackets made the grade. with rain, in the forecast, a raincoat was a no-brainer. this gingham coat was lighter than a traditional trench, and it’s black and white. a blazer and denim jacket should get me by with temps in the seventies. plus, a blazer is perfect to wear to dinner in the evening.

two dresses were packed. the henley tee shirt dress is a dream to wear and looks cute with sneakers. it will be perfect when the temperatures reach the eighties. the denim shirtdress flies solo with black booties but pulls double-duty as a duster over jeans.

pants get the most wear and tear on trips as they’re worn multiple times. dark rinse denim hides a multitude of travel sins. but i have a tide bleach pen in case the white denim falls on hard times. chinos are comfortable. and black pants? what more can we say about pants that go with everything?

many of us would forego skirts. but i love to wear them especially when the temps climb into the seventies and eighties. this floral maxi skirt is lightweight, looks adorable, and will be perfect for evening. the white corset skirt looks fantastic with espadrilles or sneakers. i think it will be on style repeat all vacation long.

the rule of thumb is two tops to one bottom. counting my tees i have ten. but one more shirt can potentially make it into my suitcase. what do you think?  i just might be fine with the chosen blouses.

Looks like a smashing lineup! No scarves?

Beth- lovely! First off, safe travels to you and Mr. Style. I’m betting you’ve packed a scarf or two and a few pieces of jewelry so am looking forward to seeing how you’ll switch things up day to day and add pops by way of your fabulous accessories. I’d like to know what you plan to carry as a day bag while out seeing the sights. I always struggle with finding the right mix of functionality in a cross body bag that can hold maps, water bottle etc with some modicum of style. I’m assuming the Marc Jacobs bag is for onboard travel. Thanks and bon voyage.

If it was me, I would probably cut down on the number of tops – for a 14 day trip you have some items you may only wear once or twice. Tops are also an opportunity to add some colour – say replace the white/black/grey tees with a bright red tee. My rule of thumb is make sure the tops work with most or all of the bottoms: that way the total number of potential outfits is at least (number of tops) x (number of bottoms). It’s always good to leave room for vacation purchases!

I’d skip heels, mules, skirts and anything white. Those are things I wouldn’t wear on a two-week trip. I need shoes with good support due to a ridiculous amount of walking. And I know myself — it takes concentration and technique to walk the cobbles without twisting an ankle. White wouldn’t last a day without getting dirty.

After I get home, I don’t like wearing my travel clothes for a good long time. Sooo tired of them! Maybe this is why I like to travel when the seasons are changing, so I can tuck those things away for a few months afterwards.

This is the color scheme I have chosen for a 7 day cruise from Boston to Montreal

. I am not taking any dresses or skirts as I just don’t often wear them. My face creams . make-up, and toiletries take up so much room. How do you pack yours? Thanks for this great post – I am leaving this week for a trip to Croatia and Slovenia and also chose black/white/navy for my travel wardrobe. I swear by packing cubes and can fit everything for a 12 day vacation into a 25” suitcase and a small carry on – I always pack a change of clothing and pjs in my carry on in case my luggage is lost or late. Great post, Beth! I love seeing your choices for the trip! I may have missed it, but how many days is the trip and do you have a separate outfit for travel, aside from the items shown? How about accessories, like bags, scarves, and jewelry? I appreciate seeing the different things for the carry-on bag. It’s easy to see how well all of these items would create a mix and match wardrobe for the duration. Do you ever find need to do laundry on your trip? Do you have items that particularly wash well by hand, if needed to do your own wash? Sounds like a great vacation!! Have fun!

I am on the tail end of a 2 week Adriatic vacation and am in Paris. We are same age and southern Atlantic coasters. Temps are rapidly climbing. I strongly recommend you leave behind the black booties and mules. Stan Smith Style sneakers rule the streets! The light tees/light tops with sleeves will get the most use. Consider switching heavy blazer for lighter cardigan linen topper. Not seeing any white bottoms yet in major european cities but light blue denim is popular. Have a fabulous time! What Summer Travel to Europe Will Look Like This Year

When travel journalist Jenn Rice decided to spend July and August in Italy and Croatia last year, she wasn’t expecting to be spending most of her time indoors. “It was very very hot, so I booked museum tickets during peak days or just lounged around in my room with a spritz and a book until the sun set.” In Dubrovnik she tried escaping to the sea for a cool dip, but everyone else had the same idea—resulting in sweaty, overcrowded beaches. “In Rome , gelato melted faster than the speed of light,” she says.

Come summer, major attractions like the Spanish Steps in Rome are thronged by international tourists and vacationing Europeans.

Rome and Dubrovnik weren’t the only European destinations overcome with heat. To travel in Europe in the summer of 2023 was to experience first-hand a single season of contrasting extremes. Temperatures swung from hot and dry to cold and wet, and heatwaves broke out across several of the most heavily touristed destinations, with temperatures reaching upwards of 100°F. In Northern Greece, wildfires broke out —the worst experienced there in 20 years —destroying homes, forests, and vineyards.

Yet in the midst of it all, the continent also saw record-breaking tourist numbers —the highest since pre-pandemic levels—even as hotel prices swelled and airfares hit peaks. From scenic escapes like Bellagio in Como and Taormina in Sicily (where the White Lotus effect was on full display) to bucket-list cities like Paris and Madrid , much of touristed Europe was completely overwhelmed.

“We had people calling us from Athens and Rome asking us to get them out [to somewhere cooler in Europe], because it was too hot and too crowded,” recalls Jan Sortland , founder of Scandinavia specialists Norwegian Adventures.

International tourists weren’t the only ones thronging these spots. According to the European Travel Commission , most Europeans took their vacations before the peak month of August, with Italy and France being their top destinations. This resulted in packed crowds at all the major attractions. For John Canning, an LA-based executive who traveled to Paris in July, the crowds were eye-opening. “We didn’t anticipate that everything we would want to see was sold out. We only got Musée d’Orsay tickets through our concierge at a substantial premium and could not get into the Louvre full stop,” he says.

Rice says the summer taught her to plan her travel differently this year—and beyond: “I’m going to try and do coastal Italy early in May, and if I decide to travel in Europe this summer it will be either Asturias in Northern Spain or the Julian Alps in Slovenia to keep cool."

She’s not alone—according to the travel specialists we spoke with, there’s an increased interest in lesser-known destinations offering a more laid back (and cooler) holiday. “Our guests are asking after places where they can be outdoors, yet have access to wine & foodie experiences and culture. Slovenia is a great example of where you can have all that without being overwhelmed with the heat; the Dolomites in Italy is another,” says Rachael Mendizabal, Europe travel specialist at Scott Dunn . Richard Hyde, COO at Small Luxury Hotels of the World , is seeing similar trends across their European portfolio: “Guests seem to be gravitating towards alternative destinations—Milos instead of Mykonos and Slovenia instead of Spain.”

Norway is a popular destination this summer, offering cooler weather and a myriad ways to be active outside, exploring the islands and fjords.

A big part of that shift will play into Sortland’s area of expertise: Northern Europe. With the Med getting too hot to handle, experts predict that tourism will shift northwards. “We’re seeing a lot of interest in Copenhagen and Stockholm for the cultural experience, and then onward to Norway for the nature. Currently, the fjords are still a favorite but Norway is a large country and there’s so much more to see—the Helgeland coast for example with its beautiful coastline and mountainous islands,” he says. The draw is a more moderate temperature and unique outdoor experiences. “ Iceland is a big favorite right now with the Northern lights being the most active this year from September through March,” says Mendizabal.

In turn, for many, the more standard city breaks will fall later in the year. “Athens and Rome will always be desirable destinations, but we’ve seen an uptick in many people preferring to go there in May and October to swerve crowds,” says Carolyn Addison, head of product at Black Tomato , noting the weather in fall has been stable lately and enticing to travelers not tied to school holidays.

With this increased flexibility, shoulder season will become tricker to define, according to Mendizabal. Thanks to hotels extending their season as demand shifts to almost year-round and the high-season pricing window getting longer, the days of “scooping a deal in September are likely over.” At Jumeirah Palace in Capri , the season now runs from March to the end of December. “Thanks to the good weather, guests are staying longer than in the past,” says Ermanno Zanini, regional vice president at Jumeirah Group, Southern Europe and United Kingdom.

Castello di Vicarello in Tuscany 's Maremma countryside has traditionally stayed open in March and November. “We're pushing the low season as much as possible because we truly believe it is a wonderful time to discover Tuscany. There is so much for guests to enjoy from hiking to mountain biking, truffle hunting, and wine tastings,” says owner Neri Baccheschi Berti.

Crucially, traveling in the shoulder and off seasons isn't just about avoiding the crowds; it’s knowing that seasonal destinations are multi-dimensional, with year-round appeal. “One of my favorite things to do in cooler weather is to hike to the peak of Mount Solaro, with its beautiful views of the town of Capri and the bay of Marina Piccola with the Faraglioni, as well as Anacapri. You also see plenty of wintering birds on the island,” says Zanini.

Zanini adds that they are in talks with the island's municipality to consider what it would take to stay open in February and March, traditionally strictly closed off. “It's not as straightforward as you think. There’s a lot of infrastructure that needs to be geared towards the low season: restaurants need to stay open, as do shops, and guides need to be available; it can’t just be the hotel,” he adds.

However, with staying open longer, there’s a real opportunity to engage local communities year-round, not to mention stabilize the hiring pool—and improve work culture. “We’ve already seen the positive impact of a longer season for our partners on the ground and locals in the hospitality and tourism sector,” says Addison, who adds that shifts in travel seasons are far from a fleeting trend. “This pattern for more year-round travel will continue to pick up pace in 2025—and beyond," she says.

Travel specialists are quick to point out that even with some of this rebalancing, summer this year and next will continue to see high demand for travel to—and within—Europe. According to Hayley Berg, chief economist at Hopper, while airfare remains higher than at this time in 2019, 40% of all searches for international trips this summer are to Europe, in line with last year and slightly higher than in 2019.

“Sure, we think that traveler numbers on the Côte d'Azur will smooth out through the year, but summer will certainly remain the festive season—only it will be longer,” says Lucie Weill, owner of wellness retreat Lily of the Valley near St. Tropez , which sees its faire share of packed streets and crowded beaches come summer. Weill adds that the hotel has seen success in extending its season.

For travel specialist Cari Gray of Gray & Co . late requests and a lack of flexibility could mean getting turned away because of a lack of availability. “Whether it’s a visit to the Vatican or dogsledding in Alaska , access is going to be very difficult. And there are only that many high-end lodges in Lapland ,” she says. Addison offers the example of Lake Como , where the best properties can often get booked up a year or two in advance during the busiest summer months. “Knowing that the top hotels and guides are getting booked up and that weather disruptions are increasingly unpredictable, clients who want to commit to the most popular summer hotspots in Europe, like the Greek islands and Sardinia are securing their bookings a year out.”

The Balearic island of Menorca is a charming escape with its rocky coves, white-sand beaches, and green rolling hills.

Ultimately, it’s not about giving up on all the places you love: just about pivoting, even if within the same country. “Why not Menorca instead of Mallorca, with its explosion of fantastic hotels and its great beach front, or Epirus in Northern Greece on the Albanian border with its Stone villages, old-growth forests, and truffle hunts instead of the islands," says Gray.

"In Italy we’re always pushing to discover new areas, even in regions that we’ve been exploring for decades like Tuscany and Umbria because new hotels are opening up regularly,” says Courtney Mundy , a travel specialist at experiential travel experts Butterfield & Robinson.

And, a word of caution for the rising favorites: “Smaller destinations in Iceland & Norway will really need to consider how to manage the higher number of visitors than ever before,” says Addison. “Parts of Iceland are overtouristed,” agrees Sortland, “so, it’s not unreasonable to think that smaller communities in Norway could eventually be at risk, too.” Whether it's through new tourist tax regimens or limits on cruise ship day-trippers to reduce crowding, a shifting tide will need more alert local governments—and as we’re swapping beaches for the mountains or Rome for Stockholm, more responsible travel habits that leave fewer traces behind.

If your road trip finally made it out of the group chat (congrats!), the next step is deciding what outfits you want to wear on your grand adventure. If you've ever spent hours sitting in the car, you know comfort is key, but that doesn't mean style is out of the question. Grab your favorite pair of dad sneakers and pair them with either a matching set or a full-body onesie and oversized jacket ( see a few standout options here )—you'll be enviably cozy while emanating chic athleisure vibes. "I love dressing up, but you will never catch me in tight denim or a restricting top during a road trip," López tells us.

Oceanside Style

Packing for a tropical vacation is slightly easier than a winter getaway, as swimsuits and lightweight dresses take up less space than a puffer coat and snow boots. Still, if you're looking to simplify your packing list, focus on different accessories to change each look. Whether you love a good pair of sunglasses, a bucket hat (we rounded up a few standout options to wear in the sun ), a belt, or jewelry, accessorizing goes a long way.

For a beach getaway, the best travel capsule wardrobe comprises pieces that take you from poolside to dinner with ease. A linen shirt ( check out a few of our favorites here ) doubles as a coverup and looks great tucked into jeans with sandals, while a one-piece bathing suit—a poolside staple—also works as a bodysuit when paired with a miniskirt . "There is no need to pack a ton of extra tops or styling pieces when your swimsuits can be used as a top, bodysuit, undergarments, or layered under a sheer dress," says fashion stylist Audree Kate López.

If you only want to pack one handbag, you can't go wrong with a basket bag to fit all your necessities. "A beach tote can be used during the day at the pool/beach to carry essentials, towels, a book, etc., but can also be used as a carry-on personal item on the plane," López tells us.

Max Elevation

Packing for a mountain getaway may seem daunting, but we have the ultimate outfit formula to stay warm on the slopes and feel chic as you head straight to the lodge for an après-ski hot chocolate. The key to packing for a winter vacation is base layers. "You need to layer up in the mountains, so opt for fleece pullovers and warm hats, plus cute and cozy pieces you can mix and match throughout your stay," says Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire.

For a ski trip or other winter travel, you'll obviously need practical outerwear like a down jacket and snow boots, but don't forget to put thought into your base layers to maximize your style options. A turtleneck bodysuit ( see a few of our favorite bodysuits ) layers well under winter gear, plus you can elevate it for nighttime with chic trousers and a cardigan . As for pants, we love the below moto puffer style by Alo, as it works overtime as both regular cargo pants and a ski option.

Take On the City

The key to versatile and stylish packing for a city trip is channeling quiet luxury , proving the trend's staying power yet again. Think Sofia Richie Grainge 's style, including tailored basics and understated accessories. Rather than packing five different bags, choose a style with straps that you can adapt between shoulder and crossbody styles, like the below option from Brandon Blackwood. Pack a comfortable pair of black booties (the lower the heels, the better, since you'll be doing a lot of walking). "Avoid uncomfortable 'trendy' shoes and pack items that you can wear pretty much all day without needing to go back to the hotel and change," López tells us. A good pair of leather boots— like any of these —can go with any look.

Lastly, a city travel capsule wardrobe is best with a good coat and blazer to style with any outfit. Then you'll be able to swap out basics like a white tee, jeans, and a little black dress to create a range of sophisticated ensembles to fit everything on your agenda.

High Seas Fashion

When you're about to set sail on the trip of a lifetime, what do you pack? While you'll probably be soaking up a lot of sun on a cruise, it's important to remember that after the sun sets, it can get pretty chilly. Thus, a lightweight cardigan (we love these cashmere options ) will be your go-to from day to night when you need an extra layer. Additionally, a lightweight matching set like the one below from Abercrombie is an ideal option for packing light amid changing temps, as you can wear it together or separately to create a whole range of looks. "Pack easy day-to-night styles—things you can lounge in during the day by the pool or on [an] island, and then dress up easily for dinner and a show," Maguire advises.

One with Nature

Whether you're an outdoorsy type who loves camping or prefer the glamping experience, you'll want to be prepared to face the elements, and you can absolutely do so in style. A raincoat or windbreaker (ideally a two-in-one jacket) is a necessity, and these days, the market truly has all-weather pieces to fit every taste—the below water-resistant parka from Totême is a sophisticated, versatile option. You'll also need a good pair of sneakers for hiking , and it's a bonus if they're also waterproof.

"I am a glamper myself and love it," Maguire tells us. "You'll need layers for a camping trip. Go for an oversize flannel button-up and your favorite pair of denim —even overalls could be fun here." Look for moisture-wicking items for practicality and layer them with trend-forward pieces like a plaid flannel shacket.

The Story of Snoopy in Space

How a cartoon beagle helped popularize NASA’s Apollo program

A small silver pin shows a smiling Snoopy, a cartoon dog, wearing a spacesuit with a large clear glass helmet, performing his iconic happy beagle dance.

Only one astronaut has landed on the moon, traveled to the International Space Station, and blasted into orbit on the space shuttle. On top of that, in 2022, he hitched a ride aboard the record-breaking flight of Artemis I, which traveled an astronomical 1.4 million miles. 

The astronaut? Snoopy. The beloved beagle from the Peanuts comic strip has a career in space that began more than 55 years ago and shows no sign of slowing down.

Snoopy joined NASA in 1968, as a mascot for the Manned Flight Awareness program (now called the Space Flight Awareness program), which was established in 1963. “Within a couple of years of the first human spaceflights, NASA was already working on this internal program to remind anyone working on human spaceflight that people’s lives depended on the quality of their work,” says Margaret Weitekamp, a curator who oversees the social and cultural history of spaceflight collection at the National Air and Space Museum.“They distributed posters, often featuring images of the astronauts, to keep workers focused on the stakes involved in creating material for human spaceflights.”

The safety awareness program took on renewed urgency after the Apollo 1 fire killed astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. “The loss of the three astronauts’ lives in January 1967 was a devastating blow for NASA and the Apollo program,” says Weitekamp. “Recovering from that required a complete reevaluation of the systems, spacecraft, and plans for the lunar landings. NASA flight director Chris Kraft said publicly that without the changes that were made in the aftermath of the fire, the U.S. would not have gotten to the moon.”

Snoopy seemed an ideal choice for a mascot to boost morale and visibility for the renewed effort. He had already exhibited the “right stuff” by portraying a daring Olympic skier, a rough-and-tough hockey player, and, of course, a valiant World War I flying ace.

“NASA’s Al Chop [deputy public affairs officer at the Manned Spacecraft Center, now known as the Johnson Space Center] was the one who reached out to Schulz to see about using Snoopy as a symbol for the space program,” says Benjamin Clark, curator at the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. “Schulz was incredibly flattered to be asked. He so respected what was going on with the space program and was thrilled to be part of it. He donated the drawings free of charge.”

“The high esteem of a Silver Snoopy award comes from its stringent requirements,” says Weitekamp. “A person can be recognized with a Silver Snoopy only once. It cannot be awarded in recognition of a retirement or other such cause. A Silver Snoopy is only awarded in recognition of specific tasks or achievements that supported and improved a spaceflight. Those who have them are justifiably proud of them.”

After Snoopy was recruited by NASA, the peppy pooch was everywhere. Spacesuited Snoopys appeared on scores of motivational posters reminding NASA employees that “mission success is in your hands.” Apollo astronauts even began referring to their communications headgear as the “Snoopy cap” because it resembled the aviator helmet worn by the canine as he scoured the skies for the Red Baron.

It wasn’t long before Snoopy made his first spaceflight. In 1968, astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders took Silver Snoopy lapel pins with them on Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to leave Earth’s orbit and the first crewed mission to enter lunar orbit. The tradition has continued over the years. “Snoopy has been to space quite a few times,” says O’Brien. “He was on  Columbia  STS-32 in 1990 and the space station in 2019 for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.”

Snoopy’s space sojourns are chronicled in a special traveling exhibit sponsored by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center. The story, titled “To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA,” begins in 1959, when a Peanuts comic strip depicted the derring-do dog staring at the moon and wondering if any canines lived there. Ten years later, the World War I ace announced plans to become the “first beagle on the moon.” 

“Schulz had Snoopy go to the moon in a series of strips for about a week in March 1969,” says Clark. “He had a bit of pushback from his syndicate. They said, ‘The astronauts haven’t been up there yet. What if something happens?’ He replied, ‘My character can go to the moon. It’s fine.’”

Snoopy again made a trek to the moon in May 1969, when Apollo 10 blasted off with astronauts Gene Cernan, John Young, and Thomas Stafford for the final dress rehearsal before the actual landing in July. The lunar module, which flew to within 50,000 feet of the moon’s surface, was christened “Snoopy.” It seemed only right because its mission was to “snoop” around. In keeping with the Peanuts theme, the call-sign for the command and service module was Snoopy’s beleaguered owner, Charlie Brown.

“We realized that, by naming our spacecraft Charlie Brown and Snoopy, we could give the Snoopy Award a little more pizzazz, a little bit more exposure, and make it more meaningful,” Cernan later recalled.

In addition to the Snoopy pins, Apollo 10 also carried color illustrations of the two characters: Charlie Brown wearing a spacesuit on a green background and Snoopy on a piece of red posterboard in his flying gear. They had been drawn not by Schulz, but by graphic artist Al Stevens, a NASA contractor at Johnson Space Center who had also designed Apollo mission patches. The drawings were used to calibrate the onboard cameras so that the first color images from space could be beamed back to television sets on Earth. It had been the idea of Stafford, says space collector Larry McGlynn, who now owns the Charlie Brown painting. “Tom was driving to get color TV aboard Apollo 10,” says McGlynn. “He understood the value of the public connecting with the astronauts on the way to the moon.”

NASA’s most famous in-house Snoopy artist was Ernie Reyes, a beloved engineer who was at the space agency for 36 years. While working as Apollo’s pre-flight operations manager, Reyes started doodling Snoopy cartoons on the daily schedules, which quickly became prized by the NASA staff. “It was a cute thing, it was a funny thing, and it got to the point that the associate administrator at NASA headquarters wanted, on a daily basis, to get his Snoopy cartoon,” Reyes recalled in a 1998 interview with a NASA historian. 

The cartoons later found their way on to the cuff checklists worn by Apollo astronauts. The checklists were the detailed to-do lists for the astronauts on the moon (see A Closer Look: “Astronaut Cheat Sheet” on p. 4 of the Winter 2022 issue). Reyes’ doodles added some levity: a spacesuit-clad Snoopy was depicted, for example, floundering on the lunar surface. The checklist for Apollo 17, the program’s last moon mission, shows an image of Snoopy hopping forward and captioned: “The beginning not the end.” The Apollo 17 preliminary science report, published in 1973, includes a map of the lunar surface that reveals a small crater named Snoopy. It is located near the 1972 landing site, which is in the Taurus-Littrow valley along the eastern edge of the Mare Serenitatis plain.

In the years since, Snoopy awards, toys, and figures continue to rocket into space. In 2019, the beagle floated in the International Space Station with astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir. On live television, the trio wished the United States a Happy Thanksgiving while introducing a new balloon for the Macy’s parade: Snoopy wearing an orange NASA spacesuit.

As Artemis I journeyed to the moon in November 2022, Snoopy was an astronaut inside the space capsule, where he served an important function: the zero G indicator. Millions of people watched as TV cameras showed a Snoopy plush toy floating in the spacecraft. “NASA made a custom flightsuit for Snoopy from the exact materials used for humans in their spacesuits,” says Clark. “The detail was incredible.”

So, will Snoopy ride along on Artemis II when astronauts return to the moon later this year? That’s still up in the air. At the moment, NASA’s contract with Peanuts Worldwide is being renegotiated, but both sides are hopeful an agreement can be reached. “We need to confirm it, but I would not be surprised if there were at least Silver Snoopys on the mission,” says O’Brien.

While Snoopy in space has thrilled generations of Americans, no one was more excited than his creator. Of all the fame resulting from his comic strip, Charles Schulz was proudest of his cosmic canine’s “giant leap” on the lunar surface. “This is because cartoonists have been sending their characters into space for years in their stories,” he said in 1977, “but mine was the first character who really went to the moon.”
