Dead Bundy discusses new single and touring — exclusive interview

Recently, we were able to catch up with Pop-punk band based out of Cleveland, Ohio, Dead Bundy . Dead Bundy not only radiates an anarchy ridden energy with songs they showcase, but they also show their fun-loving nature. We discussed their new single “Drunk for Summer” and touring

Warning: Mature content mentioned in interview

I wanted to congratulate you on the release of your newest song, “ Drunk for the Summer ”! How are you feeling now that it has been released?

Where did you get your inspiration for “Drunk for the Summer”?

Put-In-Bay.

I got to know, where did the inspiration for the Band name come from?

Did you ever watch the crocodile hunter as a kid? Yeah, same. That guy got stung by a stingray. We miss him everyday.

Who would you say was the biggest inspiration for the band?

Making each other laugh, and nothing else. That’s why we started this band and why we keep doing it. Nothing else matters.

How do you feel about being featured in this year’s Ohio is for Lover’s festival performing alongside Hawthorne Heights and New Found Glory?

Everyone’s in for a rude awakening.

What is your favorite memory as a band?

We got to meet & interview with Wes Boreland (Limp Bizkit – not a Pop-Punk fan) on his Twitch show and start an internet meme war with him. He called us “pop-punk fuckers” but then we won his heart. You’ll need to scroll back in our insta a bit but it’s there we promise.

What can we expect from Dead Bundy here in the future?

Tons of new songs, content that only your mom would appreciate, and a million dollar smile.

If you could have a collaboration with any band here in the future, who would it be and why?

Bloodhound Gang, always and forever. We want to challenge Evil Jared to a Jager chug-off. Maybe he’ll even pee on us.

Now, just a few fun questions:

If you could be any fruit or vegetable, what would you be and why?

Eggplant, because of the implication.

If you were to walk into a room what would your theme song be?

Drunk for the Summer. Because we’re drunk for the summer.

Anything else you would like your fans or our readers to know?

Ever wished you could get with a squirter? We did. It’s just pee.

Dead Bundy - PRESHOW RITUALS

Join us as Dead Bundy reveals how they prepare before every show.

Joshua Weidling

Joshua Weidling

In this Preshow Rituals segment, the pop punk band, Dead Bundy, reveals what they do before taking the stage. You can check out the rituals below:

We at Dead Bundy haven’t gone through ANY turmoil, changes, and challenges over our time as a band. And because of that, we always come together and make things happen. We don’t need this preshow ritual to be a happy reminder of what we’ve been through and who we are now, but we do it anyways. So before going on stage we get messed up. We used to play sober and stuff, but a couple of embarrassing shows ended that. But now, we get so drunk that we don’t even feel embarrassed at all! Basically, one time Brian played a show on the wagon and there is a video of him missing all the notes on his guitar and his face was so ugly and red. Some fan shot a Tik Tok, tagged us and it is mortifying to watch ROFL. SO, here’s what we do before shows…to be frank, we don’t remember. But it works, and we wouldn’t change a thing. So you can probably find us at the closest watering hole to the venue to have a better idea of what we actually do before shows because we don’t know. Thanks for exposure on your platform and the time.

Ted Bundy's dump site at Taylor Mountain

Crime Scene Location in King County, Washington

Ted Bundy's dump site at Taylor Mountain

This is the Taylor Mountain site where serial killer Ted Bundy dumped the remains of at least four of his victims.

It is situated on Washington State Route 18, near the southern entrance to Tiger Mountain. The exact coordinates are available in the "Address" section below.

On Sunday, March 1st, 1975, two forestry students from a local community college were doing a project in these woods when they spotted a human skull lying among the damp, moss-covered trees.

After calling the police, the pair agreed to return to the site the following day and lead them to the exact location where they had made the discovery.

When King County detective Robert Keppel arrived at the scene, he soon realized that the silver filings on the upper teeth matched the dental records of Brenda Ball , a 22-year-old college dropout who had vanished nine months earlier after leaving a dive bar in Burien.

Although the authorities were aware that a killer who called himself "Ted" was targeting young women in the Seattle area, they did not believe that Ball's case was related to the other missing girls. In their opinion, the M.O. and the victim profile didn't match.

However, the gruesome discovery at Taylor Mountain quickly proved them wrong.

Another skull is found

During the second day of the investigation, Keppel was searching the wooded area for more of Ball's remains when he tripped over a branch and stumbled across an unexpected sight.

On the ground before him was a second skull.

The victim was Susan Elaine Rancourt , an 18-year-old college student who had been abducted from Ellensburg in April 1974.

Once the initial shock wore off, it immediately dawned on Keppel that they were dealing with another one of Ted's dump sites. Six months earlier, a pair of grouse hunters had uncovered the killer's other "burial site" in a wooded area near Issaquah .

The two locations were only 12 miles apart.

ESAR operation

Following the discovery, a large-scale operation was launched, and the police called in a team of search volunteers to comb the area for evidence. During the operation, ESAR volunteers found another skull and mandible. These remains proved to be a match against the dental records of missing women Roberta Kathleen Parks and Lynda Ann Healy .

The find was so significant that it forced Keppel and the other detectives to reevaluate many of their original theories about the elusive Ted. Up until that point, they believed that he was solely focusing on university campuses in and around the Seattle area.

However, Ball's murder made it clear that the killer was willing to switch up his M.O. by abducting hitchhikers. Furthermore, he had also strayed far outside of his comfort zone by kidnapping Parks from Corvallis, which was more than 250 miles south of Seattle.

Consequently, the authorities were now starting to realize that the man they were looking for was prepared to branch out and vary his crimes.

If you compare these two images, you will see that all of the landmarks match up.

Note that the photographer was facing west when he snapped the aerial picture on the left. As a result, we had to rotate the satellite image 90 degrees clockwise.

Taylor Mountain victims

Four missing women were discovered at Bundy's dump site on Taylor Mountain.

All of the skulls showed signs of blunt-force trauma. It is likely that Bundy inflicted these injuries using a crowbar, as he often incapacitated his targets by striking them over the head.

Lynda Ann Healy's skull was never found, as the search team only managed to locate her jaw bone.

Bundy's dump site

Taylor Mountain map

This satellite map of Taylor Mountain highlights the exact locations where the search team discovered the remains of Bundy's victims.

Keppel said that Ball's skull was roughly 1,000 feet away from Powerline Road. However, to be precise, it was actually 505 feet.

Because of the victims involved, it became immediately clear that this was his first "burial" site.

The authorities wrongly believed that the victims' bodies were buried elsewhere

Entrance

During an extensive search of the area, investigators discovered skulls, jaw bones, and clumps of human hair.

Although Bundy claimed that he dumped all of his victims' remains at the Taylor Mountain site, Keppel found this difficult to believe.

It is approximately 500–800 feet from the powerline road to the dump site. Carrying a dead body across that kind of distance would be tiring and demanding, especially on such uneven and wooded terrain.

This, coupled with the apparent absence of other body bones, led Keppel to suspect that the rest of the remains were buried elsewhere.

However, DNA testing in 2008 proved that Bundy was telling the truth. Other bones were discovered at the site. Unfortunately, it seems as though the medical examiner at the time incorrectly determined that they belonged to animals.

During prison interviews, Bundy told investigators that he severed the heads of twelve of his victims.

For example, shortly before his execution, Bundy admitted to severing the head of Georgann Hawkins and burying it at a separate location in Issaquah . Bundy said that he did this to hinder her identification and impede any future investigation into the crime.

In Keppel's book The Riverman, he claims that FBI profiler Bill Hagmaier told him that Bundy admitted to keeping "as many as four heads" at his rooming house in Seattle .

If this apartment story is true, then it raises many questions about the timeline of events.

Did Bundy keep the heads of Ball, Rancourt, Healy, and Parks from the start? Or did he retrieve them from Taylor Mountain at a later date, after they had become skeletonized? Or was this just another example of him lying?

It is the author's opinion that he may have been toying with the "hot shot" from Quantico and possibly trying to inflate his own notoriety.

Bundy claimed that he also buried Donna Manson at Taylor Mountain

Donna Gail Manson

Bundy claimed that he also buried Donna Gail Manson at Taylor Mountain. However, he said that he buried her body in a different area that was further along the powerline road.

Manson was Bundy's second murder victim. His decision to bury her remains in a different location suggests that his original plan was to vary his dump sites and keep his victims apart.

However, following Manson's murder, it seems as though he scrapped that plan and reverted back to using the original location.

The most likely explanation for this is that Bundy was beginning to feel less cautious. By the time he abducted his third victim, his confidence had grown, and the first signs of complacency were beginning to creep in. As a result, he no longer felt the need to make such an effort.

Typically, serial killers become more and more careless as time goes on. Interestingly, Bundy actually touched on this topic during one of his prison interviews:

"You learn what you need to kill and take care of the details. The first time you're careful. By the 30th time, you can't remember where you left the lug wrench."

Bundy was often drunk during his crimes. Therefore, his slip into overconfidence may have occurred much earlier than one might expect.

No trace of Manson has ever been found. Following Bundy's confession, two searches of the suspected site failed to turn up anything of note.

Animal predation

Animals

It is likely that animal predation led to the victims' remains being consumed and scattered across the mountainside.

The area in question is home to a number of carnivores and omnivores. These include black bears, cougars, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and raccoons.

The last victim to be dumped at this location was Brenda Ball, who went missing on June 1st, 1974. This means that local wildlife had at least 274 days to interfere with the remains.

During his confession with Keppel, Bundy stated the following:

"If the bodies aren't there, it's because... I think... it's because the animals took everything. And where they took them, God only knows. They must have just chewed them up."

He also postulated that the skulls may have been left behind because the animals found it too difficult to break them down.

DNA testing proves the animal predation theory

DNA

In 2005, the King County Medical Examiner's Office discovered a bin full of bones pertaining to the Taylor Mountain case. Although most of these bones clearly belonged to animals, at least twelve of them were determined to be human. The bin contained at least one fibula and two tibias (lower leg bones).

Following the discovery, the authorities proceeded to contact the families of Bundy's Washington victims and ask them to provide DNA samples.

All of the families cooperated, except for the family of Lynda Ann Healy.

Healy's brother, Robert Healy, refused to cooperate on the basis that his family had closed that chapter in their lives.

In 2006, the DNA samples and bones were sent to the University of North Texas for testing.

More than two years later, the results finally came back. Four of the bones belonged to Ball, two belonged to Parks, and one belonged to Rancourt. The other five bones belonged to an unidentified individual, whom the police believe is Healy.

These DNA results support Bundy's claim that he dumped the four women's remains at Taylor Mountain.

Ted Bundy used to hike on Taylor Mountain

Bundy hike

This police report points out that Bundy did a lot of hiking on Taylor Mountain.

Bundy clearly selected this site because he was familiar with the area. This is unsurprising, as serial killers typically operate in places where they know the lay of the land.

Google Earth

Taylor Mountain Google Maps

This is a Google Earth image of the site. As you can see, the entrance is very close to the West Tiger Mountain parking lot.

Robert Keppel

Keppel

Keppel spoke to reporters at the site while the search was taking place:

"We keep finding more and more every day. You go into those woods and you just don't know what's in there. It's so thick, so overgrown with bushes that you could find anything... a couple of minutes from now... a couple of hours from now. It doesn't matter."

Judging by various reports, the wooded area was dark, damp, and carpeted with wet leaves. The vegetation was so thick that volunteers struggled to see more than 15 feet ahead.

Search team

Search team

This image shows the search team gathering at Taylor Mountain.

The site itself was described as being nightmarish. It was gloomy, dark, cold, and wet. One ESAR volunteer likened it to something out of a Gothic movie. It was so dark inside the woods that the team needed flashlights to examine possible remains.

1972

This aerial photograph of the site is from 1972.

It was taken roughly two years before Bundy started using it as a killing ground.

Map

The aerial image above was taken in March 2012, at a time when the trees had recently been logged.

Among the skeletal remains, the police found a green military-style jacket and an old lean-to shelter—a sign that someone had slept there in the past.

They also found a large clump of blonde hair, which belonged to Rancourt.

The Eagles have landed.

The legendary rock band has agreed to a residency at James Dolan’s Las Vegas music venue The Sphere after they finish up what was billed as their final tour this spring, The Post has learned.

Don Henley — the band’s frontman who recently expressed “regret” over a cocaine-fueled night with a 16-year-old prostitute while taking the stand in a criminal case involving the theft of the lyrics to their hit song “Hotel California” — will take the stage along with Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit over 10 weekends from September through December at the $2.3 billion state-of-the-art arena, sources close to the situation told The Post.

The total number of shows and terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

Don Henley on guitar

“We do not comment on any artists performing at Sphere except for those who have been announced,” a Sphere spokesperson told The Post on Monday.

The Post reached out to the Eagles for comment.

The band concludes its “Long Goodbye” tour on June 15 in the Netherlands.

Dolan, the owner of the Knicks and Rangers, has been courting the Eagles , managed by longtime Dolan pal Irving Azoff, since last year, The Post previously reported.

Azoff co-founded the Oak View Group, which handles marketing partnerships for The Sphere, and also manages Dead & Company’s John Mayer, the Eagles and U2, which all have been booked to play the glitzy venue.

Mayer and the Grateful Dead spinoff band were scheduled to play 24 shows from May to July but have extended their stay by another 10 dates through the end of August, sources said.

However, Dolan’s efforts to bring Beyonce to the LED-wrapped arena have apparently hit a snag — at least for this year.

The Sphere lit up for the Las Vegas Formula One race.

The two have held talks since last November, with Queen Bey, her husband, Jay-Z, and her manager-mom, Tina Knowles, all touring the site, as The Post previously reported .

Buzz about a possible deal surged last month when the “Single Ladies” singer was featured in a Super Bowl ad for Verizon — showing Beyonce on a horse that was perched atop The Sphere.

The hang-up for a deal could be over Dolan’s hesitancy to splash out the millions needed to attract Beyonce and produce the high-tech shows that fit The Sphere, once source speculated.

Beyoncé sitting on some men during a 2023 performance.

The media mogul paid roughly $10 million to U2 for their extravagant production to open the arena last September. Bono and the band closed the last of their 40 shows earlier this month.

Shares in the Dolan-run parent company that owns The Sphere are up more than 40% year to date. They were down slightly on Monday, trading at around $47.

Henley, meanwhile, had taken a break from the Eagles tour earlier this month to testify in a Manhattan court in a trial involving three men accused of a scheme involving the allegedly stolen “Hotel California” lyrics.

The case” imploded mid-trial after  Henley  disclosed new evidence that cast doubt on the prosecution.

In a stunning turn of events, Justice Curtis Farber dropped the charges faced by rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, ex-Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinki — finding that Henley “manipulated” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office by failing to turn over 6,000 pages of key evidence until midway through the trial.

Henley and his lawyers tried to weaponize their attorney-client privilege to “hide information that they believed would be damaging,” Farber said at a hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court on March 6.

Eagles co-founder Don Henley on Monday candidly recounted the cocaine-fueled night when he was busted with a 16-year-old prostitute at his Los Angeles home — calling it a “regret” he still lives with more than four decades later as he took the stand in Manhattan court.

While taking the stand, the 76-year-old Henley was asked about his 1980 arrest shortly after the band broke up.

Henley admitted the breakup made him depressed, prompting him to call a “madam” to provide him with “some company.”

Among those was an underage prostitute who suffered a seizure after a night of coke-fueled commiserating , he admitted.

“I wanted to forget about everything that was happening with the band,” Henley said. “I made a poor decision which I regret to this day. I’ve had to live with it for 44 years. I’m still living with it today in this courtroom.”

Two Holland America Line crew members die in onboard 'incident' in Bahamas

dead bundy tour

Two Holland America Line crew members died on the line’s Nieuw Amsterdam ship on Friday.

The deaths occurred following an “incident in an engineering space” around 9:20 a.m. while the ship was calling at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, according to a spokesperson for the line.

“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

Nieuw Amsterdam is currently sailing a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

“The appropriate authorities were notified, and the cause of the incident is currently being investigated,” the spokesperson added, noting that earlier reports that the crew members died in a fire on board were incorrect.

Holland America is also offering counseling services to team members.

Bad bunny's poor-selling concert saturday night in minneapolis has been canceled.

Minnesota fans of Bad Bunny — who waited six years to see him perform again in the Twin Cities — will have to wait even longer now.

Saturday's concert by the Puerto Rican hip-hop star at Target Center has been canceled for reasons not specified.

Ticket buyers were sent alerts Thursday morning that the Minneapolis show is called off, and refunds or credits are being automatically sent via Ticketmaster — which means there are no plans to reschedule the date. Target Center representatives did not yet respond to request for further explanation.

Poor ticket sales could be a culprit, an issue compounded by the steep prices for most seats. Earlier this week, the arena's available tickets appeared to be less than half-sold, with seats available throughout the venue ranging in price from $122 to more than $600.

The "Dákiti" and "Mía" hitmaker performed Wednesday night at Ball Arena in Denver without any troubles reported. His next gig after Minneapolis is still scheduled in Kansas City on Tuesday, as is a three-night stand later next week at United Center in Chicago.

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.

School Shooting Florida Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks to the media after she and the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention met with families whose loved ones were murdered during the 2018 mass shooting that took the lives of 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. on Saturday. Al Diaz/Miami Herald via Associated Press

PARKLAND, Fla. — Vice President Kamala Harris toured on Saturday the bloodstained classroom building where the 2018 Parkland high school massacre happened, then announced a program to assist states that have laws allowing police to temporarily seize guns from people judges have found to be dangerous.

Harris saw bullet-pocked walls and floors still covered in dried blood and broken glass left behind from the Feb. 14, 2018, attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 14 students and three staff members and wounded 17.

The halls and classrooms inside the three-story structure remain strewn with shoes left behind by fleeing students and wilted Valentine’s Day flowers and balloons. Textbooks, laptop computers, snacks and papers remain on desks. She was told about each victim who died.

“Frozen in time,” Harris said repeatedly about what she saw. She was accompanied on the tour by victims’ family members, some of them pushing for more spending on school safety and others for stronger gun laws.

Harris, who leads the new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, said there are lessons to be learned from Parkland, both for stopping school shootings before they happen and mitigating them with measures such as making sure classroom doors don’t lock from the outside as they did at Stoneman Douglas. She pointed out that shootings are a leading cause of death for children and teenagers.

“We must be willing to have the courage to say that on every level, whether you talk about changing laws or changing practices and protocols, that we must do better,” Harris said. Advertisement

At Stoneman Douglas, former student Nikolas Cruz, then 19, fired about 140 shots from his AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle during his six-minute attack, moving methodically from the first floor, through the second and onto the third.

He pleaded guilty in 2021. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2022 after his jury couldn’t unanimously agree he deserved a death sentence, angering the victims’ families.

The building was preserved so his jury could tour it. It has loomed over the 3,600-student school from behind a temporary fence since the school reopened two weeks after the shooting. It is scheduled to be demolished this summer. No replacement plan has been announced.

Following Harris’ tour, she announced a $750 million grant program to provide technical assistance and training to Florida and the other 20 states that have similar “red flag laws.”

Florida’s law allows police officers, with a judge’s permission, to temporarily seize guns belonging to anyone shown to be a danger to others or themselves. The statute has been used more than 12,000 times since it was enacted six years ago in response to the Parkland shooting.

Harris also called on both Congress and states without red flag laws to adopt them. The Biden administration has called for a national red flag law. Advertisement

Cruz had a long history of troubling and bizarre behavior before the shooting, including animal torture. In the weeks before the shooting, he had been reported to local law enforcement and the FBI by people fearing he was planning a mass shooting, but no action was taken. He legally purchased 10 guns in the 17 months between his 18th birthday and the massacre.

“Red flag laws are simply designed to give communities a vehicle through which they can share … information about the concern of potential danger or the crying out for help,” Harris said.

Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican who signed Florida’s red flag law as governor, issued a statement Saturday calling the Biden administration’s proposed national red flag law “radical,” saying it would be modeled on California’s statute and strip gun owners of their rights. California’s law is broader than Florida’s as it allows family members, employers and others to initiate the process, but the removal also has to be approved by a judge.

California’s law “abandons due process to more quickly and easily take constitutional rights away from law-abiding Americans. That is unacceptable,” Scott said.

Harris’ tour was the latest by elected officials and law enforcement and education leaders in recent months. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona toured it in January, and several members of Congress, mostly Democrats, have gone through since law enforcement returned custody of the building to the school district last summer. FBI Director Christopher Wray and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle visited the building in recent days.

“It is important to bring these people through the building so they can see not only the horror that still exists there but so that we can point to the exact things that failed,” said Tony Montalto, president of Stand With Parkland, the group that represents most of the victims’ families. His 14-year-old daughter Gina died in the shooting. Advertisement

Some Stoneman Douglas families who participate in the tours, along with Harris and President Joe Biden, want the sale of AR-15s and similar guns banned, as they were from 1994 to 2004, but there isn’t sufficient support in Congress. Opponents, which include other victims’ families, argue that such a ban would violate the Second Amendment and do little to stem gun violence.

Linda Beigel Schulman said the tour showed Harris the carnage a mass shooting creates – it no longer will be an abstract concept for her. Beigel Schulman’s 35-year-old son, geography teacher Scott Beigel, was killed as he ushered students to safety in his classroom. The papers he was grading when the shooting began remain on his desk.

“She understands how important gun violence prevention is for us,” Beigel Schulman said of the vice president. “But when you go into the actual building and see what actually happened, it doesn’t matter that it is six years later. It really does something to you.”

Max Schachter, whose son Alex died in the shooting, uses the tours to persuade officials to enact school safety measures such as making doors and windows bullet-resistant. Alex, 14, died from shots fired through the window of his classroom’s door.

Schachter said while there is disagreement over gun laws, school safety brings the sides together. He pointed particularly to a fall visit by Utah officials, leading to that state enacting a $100 million plan to harden its schools.

“I couldn’t save Alex. But every time I have officials come through that building, lives are saved,” Schachter said.

Kamala Harris to tour blood-stained building where 2018 Florida school massacre happened

The Vice President, however, was not welcomed with open arms by some who gathered outside the school to protest.

By Terry Spencer | Associated Press • Published March 23, 2024 • Updated on March 23, 2024 at 6:38 pm

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday toured the blood-stained classroom building where the 2018 Parkland high school massacre happened, accompanied by some victims' family members who are pushing for stricter gun laws and improved school safety.

"I realized our country has become so desensitized to these acts of violence especially gun violence because the amount of mass shootings we have especially school shootings," said Sarah Hingoo, a junior at the time of the shooting who survived the massacre, told NBC6's Christian Colon.

Today, Hingoo is reminding the Vice President to not just address gun violence in America, also calling a ceasefire in Gaza.

"I'll believe she is doing something good by making these commitments to these families in person but I would not believe it if she continues to support the U.S. military sending aide to Israel," Hingoo added.

Harris' visit is the latest by elected officials and law enforcement and education leaders in recent months to the boarded-up, three-story building, which stands on the north side of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The tragic landmark has loomed over the school's 3,600 students from behind temporary fencing since the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting that left 14 students and three staff members dead and 17 wounded.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona toured the building in January and several members of Congress, mostly Democrats, have gone through since law enforcement returned custody of the building to the school district last summer.

Former student Nikolas Cruz, then 19, fired about 140 shots from his AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle during his six-minute attack. He pleaded guilty in 2021.

“The building is a time capsule,” said Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Stoneman Douglas graduate who helped organize the visit. Harris, he said, will “learn about the failures of the building, the failures of the response to the shooting by law enforcement, the failures in the training of the teachers, the failures of threat assessments of the shooter and the failure of all the warning signs.”

Some Stoneman Douglas families who participate in the tours, along with President Joe Biden, want the sale of AR-15s and similar guns banned, as they were from 1994 to 2004, but there isn't sufficient support in Congress. Opponents, which include other victims' families, argue that such a ban would violate the Second Amendment and do little to stem gun violence.

He pointed particularly to a fall visit by Utah officials leading to that state enacting a $100 million plan to harden its schools.

“I couldn't save Alex, but every time I have officials come through that building, lives are saved,” Schachter said.

During Harris' visit, the White House says, she will announce a program to provide technical assistance and training to Florida and the other 20 states that have similar “red flag laws." Florida’s law allows officers, with a judge’s permission, to temporarily seize guns belonging to anyone shown to be a danger to others or themselves. The statute has been used more than 12,000 times since it was enacted six years ago in response to the Parkland shooting. Harris also will call on states without red flag laws to adopt them.

The building where the Parkland massacre happened were preserved as evidence for the 2022 penalty trial of Cruz, who received a life sentence instead of the death penalty, angering the victims' families. The structure also was saved for the trial of the school’s sheriff’s deputy, Scot Peterson, who was acquitted last year on charges that he retreated instead of confronting Cruz.

Cruz’s jury toured the building, but Peterson’s judge rejected prosecutors’ request to bring his panel to the school. The Broward County school district plans to demolish the building this summer over the objection of some victims’ families who want to show it to more officials.

Even officials who don't support stronger gun laws learn from the tours, leading to better discussions, Moskowitz said. He believes there is broad support in Congress for increased school safety spending and a federal “red flag” law.

Cruz had a long history of troubling and bizarre behavior, including animal torture. In the weeks before the shooting, he had been reported to local law enforcement and the FBI by people fearing he was planning a mass shooting, but no action was taken. He legally purchased 10 guns in the 17 months between his 18th birthday and the massacre.
