travelling post for facebook

On social media, the content you post is critical to engaging your audience and creating a solid fan base. Yet, many travel professionals struggle with knowing what to post. Whether you are wondering what to say on Twitter, Facebook, blogs or any other channel, here are some travel content ideas to help get the creative juices flowing:

I’ve said it many MANY times : travel is an experiential product and the best way to get people thinking about travel is to show them fun places to go and fun things they can do while they are there. If you can, share personal or client photos of destinations you want to sell. They don’t need to be professional shots and often work even better if you’re in the photo doing something silly! I’ve had many travel agents report that they sell at least one or two packages they wouldn’t have otherwise every time they post photos of a trip they took.

If you don’t have photos of your own,  Flickr  is a great spot to find amazing shots of every type of destination around the world. Do a quick search and link (don’t steal!) to particularly amazing photography that you think your audience would enjoy.

Videos are also a great way to inspire customers to travel and usually works even better than photos because of their interactive nature. Once again, you don’t always need a professionally shot video to attract attention. A home video of a particularly memorable moment, useful information (like the view of a new cruise ship cabin), fun activities or footage of a new resort will do the trick. Got a knack for humor or publicly humiliating yourself without worry? Great! Use it to your advantage when you create your videos. The funnier the better! For those who are a little camera shy, don’t despair!  YouTube  is a great resource for videos of all kinds.  With a little imagination you can search and find some pretty amazing clips.

3. Useful links

The latest traveler alerts, a list of recommended items to pack, articles about the hottest trends in travel – think about what would be useful for your readership to know and you’ve got some sharable content. This is your chance to show off your expertise as a travel professional and provide your potential customers with information that they may not find otherwise.

Not sure where to find this information? Blogs, news sites, and trade press have articles that can fit the bill. You can also use  Google Alerts  to monitor the web for articles on just about any topic.

4. Blog posts

This one should go without saying, but too many people don’t think about it. If you publish regular blog posts, PLEASE remember to post links to them on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc if you have accounts there. Most blog platforms will allow you to connect your blog to other social channels automatically if you have trouble remembering to post.

5. Destination fun facts

Everyone loves a good bit of trivia or little known facts! It’s entertaining, informative and can again help position you as an expert in your field. Many tourist boards and hotel properties have fun facts available through their marketing department. Just ask to see if they can help you out.  Otherwise, the web is always a good alternative!

Engage your audience by asking them questions about things like their favourite vacation spot, what type of perks they like to get from their agent, what makes their holiday a perfect one, etc. Get them talking to you AND use the opportunity to do a little behind-the-scenes market research to find out what you can do to win and keep their business.

7. Event announcements

Are you attending your local travel show or hosting a consumer evening? Let the world know where you will be and when! Invite your fan base to come see you.  You might be surprised by how many of them show up…and bring a friend!

8. Top 10 lists

Quick, useful and always a good way of giving quick recommendations on destinations to see, things to pack, attractions to visit and more. You can either compile your own top 10 or link to someone else’s. Bonus points if you create your own with photos or video!

9. Community work updates

People like to know that you care about your community.  If you or your team partake in community service or charitable work, share information like updates about your latest donation, photos of your team volunteering, or news about your favourite charity.

10. Contest announcements & updates

Contests are ALWAYS a popular thing. If you choose to run one, you can build anticipation and buzz by posting regular updates. Whether you talk about the prizes, highlight funny entries, countdown the days until the winner is announced or something else, you’re sure to get attention (and probably new followers/fans/readers) really quickly.

11. Travel updates

Here’s another great opportunity to showcase your expertise as a travel expert. Share updates about your favourite suppliers (new bathtubs in every cabin? Service upgrades at a resort? New designer bag with every purchase? Ok…maybe not the last one, but you get the point) or important travel updates about specific destinations (everything from new passport requirements to travel warnings).

12. Ship inspection information

If you are a cruise expert and visit ships while they are in port, by all means, share pictures and reviews with your fans.  They WANT to hear your expert advice to know which ships are worth sailing.

13. Fam trip reports

I know too many agencies who require these reports from staff and then stuff them in a folder where they will never be seen again. You are experiencing travel while on these Fam trips and NEED to share those experiences with your fan base. This can be in the shape of photos, videos or blog updates. It doesn’t really matter. Either way, tell them what you liked, didn’t like, recommend and find amazing. If you do a good job, you may get a booking or two out of the experience.

14. Client stories

Ever get an email from a client who tells you how GREAT their trip was or wants to let you know about something funny that happened? If so, ask for their permission to share it with everyone. It acts as a testimonial for you and can be entertaining all at once.

15. Answers to common questions

If there are travel questions you get regularly, use the opportunity to share the answer with a wider audience. It may even prompt your fan base to ask you more questions and start engaging. Again…show everyone that you know your stuff and the bookings will follow!

16. Opinions

If something is happening in the travel community and you have an opinion to share, you can use your social channel to do so.  However, I would caution you to think twice about being excessively controversial or political as it may turn some people away. Some controversy is ok, but too much can be hard to handle for some people.

17. Travel tips

These can be quick tips or longer blog posts about your recommendations. Just like the fun facts, top 10 lists, and other ideas listed here, they help position you are the expert that your are while being useful.

18. Behind-the-scenes updates

If your teams is planning an event or preparing something big, there is always interest in seeing you have fun behind-the-scenes.  Be creative here with photos, videos, stories and staff comments.

19. Favourite quotes

Inspiring travel quotes are fairly easy to find (Google to the rescue!) and quick to post. If you are out of inspiration for the day, a quick quote can keep the engagement going with minimal effort.

20. Staff picks

Get your whole team involved in recommending hotels, resorts, cruises, activities or whatever else you can think of. This can be really fun for everyone and helps showcase your agency as a whole.

21. Interviews

Think written or video interviews with people on your team, a destination representative, hotel partner, etc.

22. Funny Stories

Whether it’s a cartoon, a funny video, an anecdote or the joke of the week, humor always goes a long way!

23. Updates from the road

This is where you bring out your inner journalist.  If you have access to an internet connection or a smartphone while on the road travelling or attending events, you can provide live updates.  This works particularly well on Twitter or Facebook where updates can be quick and short. Blog posts take some thought, but you could still provide one update per day once you have a chance to slow down a bit in the evening.

24. Milestones

Did you just get a new specialist certification? Did your agency win an important award? Maybe you got featured in the local newspaper. It’s time to let everyone know so they can share in the joy and find out how fabulous you really are!

25. Travel deals

I saved this one for last because it seems like the most obvious choice, yet it’s not always the best one. Depending on your sales goals, you may not want to attract the bargain hunters looking for the best deal. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if deals are a good choice for you.

It’s not as hard as it may seem. Many of the ideas above are already available within your agency or on the web.  A simple Google search or using  Google Alerts  can help you stay in the loop and find interesting content quite easily and without gobbling up your precious time.

Now it’s your turn…

Have you had success with any of the ideas above? Or perhaps I’ve missed a few good ones that you’d like to share?

Choosing the Right Map

When posting a flight map on Facebook, it’s important to choose the right map that effectively portrays your journey. Here are a few key considerations to keep in mind:

Accuracy: The map you choose should accurately represent your flight path. Make sure to select a map that includes all the necessary details, such as the departure and arrival airports, as well as any layovers or connecting flights.

Clarity: A clear and easy-to-understand map is essential for your Facebook post. Look for a map that displays the flight route clearly, with distinct lines and clear labels for each destination. This will help your friends and followers easily comprehend your travel itinerary.

Visual Appeal: While accuracy and clarity are important, it’s also worth considering the visual appeal of the map. Look for a map that has an attractive design and color scheme, making it visually appealing to your audience. A visually pleasing map can enhance the overall aesthetic of your Facebook post.

Customization Options: Depending on your preferences, you may want to choose a map that offers customization options. This could include the ability to add text or markers to the map, highlighting specific points of interest or important landmarks along your journey. Customization options can help add a personal touch to your flight map.

Compatibility: Ensure that the map you choose is compatible with the platform you are using to post on Facebook. Some maps may require additional plugins or software, so it’s essential to check compatibility to avoid any technical difficulties.

Accessibility: Finally, consider the accessibility of the map. Choose a map that can be easily viewed and understood by your friends and followers, regardless of their device or screen size. Opt for a map format that can be zoomed in or out for better visibility on both mobile and desktop platforms.

By considering these factors, you can choose the right map for your flight post on Facebook, ensuring that it effectively showcases your journey and engages your audience.

Preparing the Flight Map

Before you can post a flight map on Facebook, you will need to prepare it in a suitable format. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Choose a flight map with clear and readable markings.
  • If the flight map is in a physical format, such as a paper map or a chart, you will need to digitize it. Use a scanner or a camera to capture the map as an image file.
  • If the flight map is already in a digital format, ensure that it is in a compatible file type. Common file types for digital flight maps include JPEG, PNG, and PDF.
  • If necessary, use image editing software to enhance the visibility and clarity of the flight map. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and color levels if needed.
  • Consider adding labels or annotations to the flight map to provide additional context or information.
  • Resize the flight map to a suitable resolution for online sharing. A width of around 1200 pixels is typically sufficient for Facebook.
  • Save the prepared flight map as a separate file to maintain the original version for future reference.

Once you have followed these steps, you will have a properly prepared flight map that is ready to be posted on Facebook.

Uploading the Map to Facebook

Once you have successfully created and saved your flight map using a mapping software or website, you can easily upload it to Facebook to share with your friends and followers. Here’s how you can do it:

Is there a good group for travelers (both male and female in one group ) over 50?

I’m not an expert in that arena, my audience is recent grads and 20’s, so I don’t know! I’m sorry!

Thanks, these are so helpful! I am curious if you have ever come across any legit, alive Brown/South Asian travel groups, would love to know some. 🙂

I’m looking for a Facebook group for individuals traveling on a safari to Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar or something close. All groups that I find are companies promoting their travel tours.

I’d recommend maybe looking for expat communities in Kenya or Tanzania. What’s your goal with the Facebook group?

Great list, I would also recommend the Travel Fashion Girl group, awesome for packing tips.

Thanks for the great list. Can you recommend any working holiday face book pages? I’m thinking of starting one.

I don’t know of any! If you make it, I will add it to the list 🙂

Great list! You should include Black Travel Lounge! https://www.facebook.com/groups/BlackTL

I ran across your web site. I loved it. I’m a 68 married female. I want to travel different states in the United States. My husband does not want to travel real bad. I would like to meet women who loves to travel also. What is the best Facebook travel site for that.

I think Girls Love Travel, and Solo Female Travel Network will be great for what you’re looking for!

Excellent suggestions!

Now Facebook Wants You To Share Where You’re “Traveling To”

travelling post for facebook

Serendipitous meetups with friends while traveling make us happy and Facebook wants to be the portal to that joy. So this week it quietly rolled out a new feature that lets you share where you’re “traveling to”. Facebook’s Page mentioned it today, so I asked the company which said that after some testing, “traveling to” is now available to all users. It has big potential to bring Facebook valuable data on what’s important to us.

The “traveling to” option is found within the activity and emotion sharing smiley-face button on the Facebook status composer on both web and mobile. One you select it, you can choose a destination city, but not a departure and return time. Facebook will then append “traveling to Boston” with a little plane icon. Some destinations get their own special emoji, like a Statue Of Liberty for New York, or a Hollywood sign for Los Angeles.

(Note: I wouldn’t recommend sharing these posts publicly though, as you don’t want to advertise your absence from home for security reasons. It might be nice if Facebook warned people about that.)

Without “traveling to”, most us just end up posting “I’m coming to New York, who wants to hang out?”. But I’ve found I got little engagement with those posts. If users happen to check in at an airport, Facebook would ask where they were heading and show that in the post, but few people know about this and checking into airports just feels lame and braggadocious. Some people use third-party app like TripIt to share their itineraries.

851570_223148934550320_1065132755_n

All these options will probably see less usage now that there’s an easily accessible “traveling to” feature. And yes, Path has automatically done this for a while by auto-publishing when you appear in a new city. But as Facebook has proven over and over, it doesn’t care who did it first. It wants to do it at scale.

What’s puzzling about the feature is that Facebook confirms that sharing where you’re  “traveling to” won’t change anything else about how Facebook works. But it should.

When you’re in a different city, your Facebook should be different too. It should show you relevant stories from local friends and ads from nearby businesses instead of ones where you live, and let people know you’re in town so you can meet up. None of these happen right now…

…But I wouldn’t be surprised if they did soon. Facebook’s whole value to users and its business model depend on relevancy — knowing what you want to see. Explicitly telling it where you’re traveling to is an extremely strong signal that content from or about your destination is more important to you.

Traveling To

And for its own business as well as making the ads I have to see anyways more interesting, it should show me promos for local businesses where I’ve traveled to. Yes, most people hate ads no matter what, but I’d rather see one for a bagel shop in New York I could try out while I’m there than one back in San Francisco that I’ll forget about before I return. (Plus, SF bagels are a joke. Someone vacuum-seal and send me some from Manhattan, stat.)

A frequent complaint about Facebook is that it’s actually isolating. We sit at home reading News Feed instead of actually calling or visiting friends. “Traveling to” could let Facebook better fulfill its mission to connect us. After all, life on the move is a lot more fun when it’s not spent alone in hotel rooms.

17 Easy Ways For Travel Companies To Keep Their Facebook Page Updated

As a travel company, your Facebook page is a great way to share news and photos, inspire fans and tempt people into following their wanderlust. With the number of Facebook users still  continuing to increase  it is a platform that you can’t afford to ignore whatever kind of business you are, but especially in the travel industry.

There’s no doubt about the fact that the nature of Facebook lends itself very nicely to  travel marketing , and that makes it all the more important that you are participating and giving yourself the opportunity to benefit from its huge reach.

The main reason we hear from clients as to why they don’t have an active page is time.  “We don’t have time to spend all day on Facebook and work out what we should be posting and then actually doing it” . The reality is that if you do it cleverly, keeping an active and thriving Facebook page doesn’t have to be a hugely time consuming job, you just need to have a structured plan and stick to it.

We’ve tried to make that job super easy for you by providing 17 different types of Facebook update which you can easily schedule at the start of each week that will help grow your following as well as keeping them engaged and entertained….

1. ‘THIS OR THAT’

A simple Facebook post to create engagement would be to ask your audience a ‘this or that’ question. To make one of these you need to upload two photos to your status and pose the question. These can be used to make people choose between destinations, activities and even food!

1

2. PLAY ON THE WEATHER

The weather is a topic that always get’s people talking and what better way to get your audience talking about it other than tempting them with a warm and sunny beach or enticing images from one of your destinations.

2

3. JUST FOR FUN QUIZZES

A great way to show off landmarks near your hotels and resorts and is a great way to engage your audience. Posting a ‘Just For Fun’ Quiz regularly can create a following that comment answers each week. Remember to respond after a while to reveal the answer and congratulate those first few who guessed right!

3

4. SHARE YOUR HOLIDAYMAKERS ENJOYING THEMSELVES

With their permission, sharing photos of holidaymakers you’re currently looking after enjoying themselves is a great way to build trust with potential holiday-goers. It also offers an opportunity to show off your hotels, resorts, local area and scenery you can offer. This will help inspire people and potentially make them interested in visiting your destinations.

4

5. SHARE LOCAL EVENTS AND FESTIVALS

There are a lot of events and festivals that occur around the world and whilst some are mainstream and well known, there are many that aren’t. Share these with your audiences and create awareness of all your destinations have to offer and the vibrant activities going on there.

7

6. PROMOTE YOUR BLOG

Sharing a link to your blog and blog posts is a good way to update your Facebook page and make your audience aware that you have content on your website. When you update your blog with new posts you should be sharing it on your Facebook page to draw attention to it. If you’re not sure what to write for you blog you should check out our  epic list of travel blog post ideas …

6

7. INTERACT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

If people are posting comments on your statuses and on your wall you should be communicating with them (and not only negative comments!). If somebody passes comment on one of your photos or posts – respond to them. Facebook can be a great customer service tool and by displaying your great customer service in the public eye you can help build trust with prospective customers.

8. PROMOTE YOUR OFFERS

Facebook is a great place to share your latest offers and deals. When posting be brief but to the point, you want people to be interested by what you post then click onto your site to find out more. You can upload a photo with the post to show the resort or location relevant to your offer, or take the opportunity to have a little fun. Studies have shown that its best to keep to a 9:1 ratio of great content to promotional posts, so make sure you don’t overdo it with the offers and turn off your audience!

9

9. SHARE TESTIMONIALS AND REVIEWS

If you get thank you cards or thank you messages, share them with your Facebook audience. It’s a great way to thank your holidaymakers for being great guests and builds a relationship that will hopefully see them come back again. It’s also a good way to build trust with your Facebook audience and potential holidaymakers who can see that you’re a good company to work with.

10

10. PROMOTE LOCAL BUSINESSES YOUR CUSTOMERS WILL BE INTERESTED IN

Holidaymakers are always looking for good places to visit on their travel, and who better to help them out than the experts! Let potential holidaymakers know about restaurants, cafes and shops that are off the beaten track that you love and you can help both inform your guests but also bolster your relationship with businesses in your local area. Customers will love you for helping uncover the hidden gems that otherwise may slip through the net, and it will demonstrate to other onlookers that you truly are experts.

11

11. CREATE AND SHARE PHOTO ALBUMS

Sharing photo albums on Facebook is a great way to add content to your page as well as advertise future events. Travel is so visual that photo albums for specific locations, events or activities could help convince a fan to visit and book a trip with you. At the very least it will let your fans dream for a few minutes about where they might visit on their next trip and further build the relationship you have with them.

Screen Shot 2015-09-25 at 14.10.42

12. SHARE LINKS TO RELEVANT NEWS

Engaging with your local area and community is a great way to update your Facebook as well as reinforce your position as part of the local community. Sharing local news from trustworthy websites, such as your local or regional paper can help build relationships within your local community. Sharing relevant, national news as well is a good way to get conversations started and provides useful information for your fans which isn’t promotional in anyway. If large authoritative websites are talking positively about places your company visits then there’s no doubt that it will be persuasive for readers who are considering a trip there.

13. SHARE LINKS TO RELEVANT BLOG POSTS  (ON OTHER BLOGS)

A quick and simple way to build relationships with travel bloggers, local organisations and businesses and inform your audience about upcoming events is to share blog posts that have been written by other people. As in the exampl above, third party recommendations for places you offer further reinforce your message to potential customers. If the blogger or organisation who’s post you’re sharing is on Facebook, ensure you tag them in your status so they know you are helping promote their content which they may reciprocate at some point in the future.

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 13.01.42

14. GIVE A SHOUT OUT FOR A SPECIFIC BLOG YOU LOVE

Do you have a favourite blogger? Or know of a blogger who loves to blog about your local town, city, restaurant scene? Engaging with bloggers and blogs that you, your brand and your audience will resonate with is a great way to build a relationship with the blogger, and potentially gain some exposure as well as share useful recipes, news, reviews, itineraries etc with your audience. If you turn this into a regular series, like “Travel Blog Tuesday” when you promote a different blog you love it can have a hugely beneficial effect on your own visibility as people develop a relationship with your brand and bloggers become more likely to interact with you and mention you in other places.

Screen Shot 2015-09-25 at 14.23.17

15. RUN A PHOTO SERIES

Photo series are great ways to post regularly and post content consistently with your audience. You can share historic photos of your resort/hotel, historic photos of  the local town, photos of past events and even post photos of your staff (if they allow you too) and do a ‘meet the team’ feature where each week you introduce a member of your team. Another great idea is to post an image and ask your audience to post their own images in return such as favourite landscapes, flowers and food. You can also turn it into a competition (either just for fun or with a prize).

Screen Shot 2015-09-25 at 13.55.44

16. CROSS PROMOTE WITH OTHER PAGES

Communicating with other businesses active on Facebook is a great way to build your audience, relationships and gain exposure. As well as your own competitors, there will be other businesses who are targeting the same customers but for their own products/services. Local companies such as tour operators, day trip organisers and restaurants would be good to target. The idea is that you post a status, tagging the other business in it and saying something positive about them in return for a positive endorsement back on their page.

You should look to find a business of a similar Facebook audience size that is a good fit with yours so both parties get a good deal and both benefit from the increased visibility of the other’s audience.

Screen Shot 2015-09-25 at 14.28.40

17. FILL IN THE BLANK POSTS

These posts are great for engagement as well as conducting subtle market research. You can also use their answers to influence future posts, if you find a lot of people reply with the same answer you can look to tailor a future post around this answer.

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 13.27.49

So you’ve got lots of great ideas for posts, what now?

Developing a social media content calendar will help you organise the way you curate and distribute your content, as well as keep a record of what you’ve posted so you can plan ahead and develop your strategy.

Being organised in this way will also save you time in the long run and helps you manage your time. Your calendar can also be used to incorporate other social media channels and your blog.

Monday  – A ‘This or That’ photo Tuesday  – Share a link to an interesting news article Wednesday  – Add a new photo album Thursday  – Share a link to one of your blog posts Friday  – Highlight a blog you love Saturday  – Schedule a Fill in the Blank post Sunday  – Highlight a local business that your customers would love

Once you’ve decided what you’re going to be adding to your page you need to make sure you post it in the most effective way to gain as much reach as possible. Buffer  ran a study  to identify the key elements that make up the ‘perfect Facebook post’ and found that it:

  • is brief—40 characters or fewer, if you can swing it
  • gets published at non-peak times
  • follows other posts on a regular schedule
  • timely and newsworthy

Obviously these rules don’t apply to every single post, but are interesting insights into what proves effective on the platform that you can try to stick to with some of your posts. Never stop experimenting though, as your audience may like something different to the average.

Facebook provides the option for you to schedule your posts, which means that after you’ve drawn up your plan for the week you can sit down and spend 10-15 minutes scheduling your posts.

When you type your status click on the drop down arrow next to the Publish button, then click schedule:

19

From here you select the time and date you have planned for the post to go out on. To confirm, click Schedule:

20

This is a useful tool, especially for weekend posts or if you are going to be out of the office/unable to post things on the day.

Finding the balance between annoying and informative can be difficult. Whilst you want to share everything going on you don’t want to bombard your Facebook audience with so many updates that they ‘switch off’ to what your brand has to say and at worst unlike your page.

A survey  conducted by Social Bakers has found that posting once a week is ok, but it won’t help build your audience and you run the risk of losing connection with your audience. They recommend that you should post between  5 and 10 times a week . Track social then followed up this research  and concluded  that you should not post more than twice a day.

So there you have it!  If previously you thought you didn’t have time to keep a Facebook page updated hopefully you will now think otherwise and feel motivated to put a plan like this into action.

With 15 minutes to schedule all your posts, and around 45 minutes to decide what you plan to post you should be able to keep a consistently updated Facebook page using up no more than 1 hour per week. And once you get into the swing of things it will become a doddle!

Don’t expect floods of Likes to pour into the page as soon as you start doing this, but if you keep this kind of strategy up consistently then over time you will accumulate a good increase in your following and form a good foundation for when you wish to invest a bit more time and effort into your Facebook campaigns.

1.5 billion more passengers flew last year than in 2022. These are the 10 busiest airports in the world.

  • New data on the world's busiest airports in 2023 reveals the latest trends in global travel.
  • 8.5 billion passengers traveled by plane last year, almost marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Airports in Asia and the Middle East became busier, but the US has once again clinched the top spot.

Insider Today

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the just-released list of the world's busiest airports in 2023.

8.5 billion passengers traveled globally by plane last year — up from 7 billion passengers in 2022 .

The rise in air travel marks a recovery to 93.8% of levels in 2019 before the world shut down, according to preliminary data published by the Airports Council International (ACI), a trade association that includes 2,600 airports worldwide.

Increasing travel to airports in Asia and the Middle East was one of the key trends to emerge from the data, with Dubai International Airport jumping from the fifth to the second busiest airport in the world.

Airports in India, Japan, and Turkey also made it into the top 10 and were some of the biggest movers in terms of annual gains in passenger numbers.

As the world's largest domestic market for flights , US airports still make up five of the busiest airports in the world, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its No. 1 position.

Despite tough global economic conditions, there was "a growing inclination towards travel," Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the ACI's world director general, said in a press release.

"Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel," said Oliveira.

Here's a closer look at the top 10 busiest airports in the world.

10. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 72.2 million

2022 ranking: 9th

Delhi's main airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, saw a 21.4% increase in year-on-year traffic. While it has dropped a place this year, Delhi has grown significantly as a transport hub since 2019, when it sat at number 19 in the rankings.

9. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, USA

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 73.9 million

2022 ranking: 4th

Travel through Chicago O'Hare jumped by 8.1% throughout 2023. O'Hare is a hub airport for domestic travel, particularly for United and American Airlines flights. It is also a focus city for low-cost rivals Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

8. Los Angeles International Airport, USA

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 75.1 million

2022 ranking: 6th

Travel through LAX was up 13.8% in 2023, however, compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, passengers at the West Coast airport decreased by 14.8% — the largest decrease of any airport in the top ten rankings. LAX is a hub for a number of carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United, American, and Delta. But domestic travel at the airport shrunk dramatically as airlines cut the number of flights following a series of meltdowns in 2022.

7. Istanbul Airport, Turkey

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 76 million

2022 ranking: 7th

Passenger numbers at Turkey's Istanbul airport have increased by 18.3%, making it the only transit hub to keep level with its previous ranking in the top 10. Notably, traffic through the airport has jumped by 45.7% since 2019.

6. Denver International Airport, USA

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 77.8 million

2022 ranking: 3rd

Denver Airport has dropped down several places on the list but still shows strong signs of growth in terms of passengers. In the last year traffic through the Colorado airport was up 12.3%, and it has also grown 12.8% from pre-pandemic levels.

5. Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Japan

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 78.7 million

2022 ranking: 16th

Japan's Tokyo Haneda Airport saw the largest increase in traffic by far, with passenger numbers surging by 55.1%. Some of that jump can be explained by a lag in tourism as Japan only reopened its borders in late 2022. Despite the jump, Tokyo Haneda is still 7.9% under its 2019 level of traffic. This January the airport made headlines after a fatal collision involving a Japan Airlines plane and a coastguard vehicle killed five people.

4. London Heathrow, UK

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 79.2 million

2022 ranking: 8th

Travel through the UK's largest airport shot up by 218% in 2022 and has once again made strong gains throughout 2023, jumping by a slightly more modest 28.5%. The airport has credited travel from the Asia-Pacific region as a major factor in its increased passenger numbers. It hopes to supersede its pre-pandemic level of traffic in 2024 and hit a record 81.4 million passengers, the airport said in a report published in December.

3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, USA

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 81.8 million

2022 ranking: 2nd

Dallas/Fort Worth airport , known as DFW, is American Airlines' busiest hub and the departure city for many of the airline's international flights. Last year traffic through the airport jumped by 11.4%.

2. Dubai International Airport, UAE

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 87 million

2022 ranking: 5th

Dubai took the number 2 ranking in the list for the first time, thanks to a significant 31.7% increase in passenger numbers. Dubai's new position reflects the heavy investment that has gone into the aviation industry and boosting tourism in the region.

1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, USA

travelling post for facebook

Passengers: 104.7 million

2022 ranking: 1st

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport comes in at No. 1 as the busiest airport in the world, a position it has held for more than two decades. In 2023, the Atlanta airport saw an 11.7% increase in passenger numbers.

Here's a look at what it takes to be an air traffic controller at the world's busiest airport.

America’s most loathed airport is cool now

New york city’s laguardia airport went from punchline to a flier favorite.

NEW YORK — From an arriving plane, taxiing up to a gate in the new Terminal B at New York’s LaGuardia Airport is like approaching a steel-and-glass fortress. Flat gray walls at ground level immediately meet the eye. The building’s notable touches — its floor-to-ceiling windows, pedestrian bridges and other architectural flourishes — all rise above you.

After that fortress-like approach, deplaning into the building is a pleasant departure from its dreary reputation . The concourse is light and airy with a rising roofline that visually guides travelers to the bridge to the terminal and the city beyond.

Concessions, including local favorites like Irving Farm coffee roasters and national chains like Wendy’s, beckon with dining options. Forget a book? Grab one at beloved New York bookstore Strand . Need a gift for the kids? The Lego store has you covered.

Or just want to relax away from the traveling masses? Credit card provider Chase recently opened a gleaming new lounge, joining ones managed by Air Canada, American Airlines, United Airlines and American Express.

This isn’t the LaGuardia of “ airport sushi ” infamy anymore.

The airport has come a long way since Vice President Joe Biden described it as “third world” in 2014. Gone is the 1960s-era Central Terminal Building with its leaky roofs , lack of food options and nowhere to sit. Terminal B replaced it in 2020. And Terminal C, which is still under construction, will replace Terminals C and D when it is completed later this year.

“This is gorgeous,” one female traveler stopped to tell Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton, the man who oversaw the transformation of LaGuardia, as he watched a water feature falling from the ceiling in the middle of Terminal B.

“I feel like I’m not at home,” she added before disappearing to catch a flight as “New York, New York” played in the background.

Reactions like these are common, Cotton said on a walk through Terminal B last month. The Port Authority, which operates LaGuardia, receives similar feedback from travelers.

“This is civic architecture,” he said while looking out one of those walls of glass you can see from taxiing planes. “It should be inspiring and appealing.”

And an inspiring and appealing edifice is what the Port Authority and its private partners have achieved: a pleasant, art-filled, Instagrammable place — and this time in a good way.

From last to first place

There are many problems with LaGuardia. For one, in a world of large, mega-airports like Dallas-Fort Worth, it’s minuscule. The airport, with just 680 acres, is smaller than Central Park.

On top of that, LaGuardia was built without a master plan, Cotton said. The original terminal — Terminal A, later known as the Marine Air Terminal — opened in 1940 and Terminal B was completed in 1964. Later came Terminals C and D in the 1980s and 1990s.

“It was ‘we’ll just build this one new terminal building,’ and it was how the Port Authority had approached the airport as a whole … No plan. Piecemeal,” Cotton said.

Then came former New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Cuomo, in January 2015, announced an “aggressive infrastructure redesign” of New York’s John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports after years of inaction. Cotton noted that, among other reasons, rebuilding the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks took “an enormous amount of the resources of the agency.”

By summer 2015, New York State had selected private partners to redevelop Terminals B, C and D at LaGuardia, including LaGuardia Gateway Partners for Terminal B and Delta Air Lines for Terminal C. Construction began on Terminal B in 2016 and Terminal C a year later.

“There was a real continuity of top leadership support,” Cotton said. He cited Cuomo and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for their support.

“You need that in terms of committing the funding, and you need that in terms of a thousand different problems that come into play,” Cotton added, who was named Port Authority executive director in 2017.

What the Port Authority and its private partners did was no small feat. “You have a fully operational airport with passengers and you’re fully reconstructing that facility,” said TJ Schulz, president of the trade group Airports Consultants Council.

He likened the reconstruction of LaGuardia to “changing a tire on a car that’s moving on the interstate.”

It paid off: the trade group Airports Council International World recently named LaGuardia as having the best customer experience for airports its size in North America, which is a dramatic turnaround from its historical last or near-last place standing. Skytrax , the publisher of global airline and airport quality rankings, lists LaGuardia Terminal B as one of just three facilities in North America with the top five-star rating. LaGuardia Airport as a whole is rated four stars.

A work in progress

The design of the new Terminal B, which was completed in 2022, aims to reduce stress and create a “calm, frictionless experience” for travelers, as LaGuardia Gateway Partners CEO Suzette Noble put it.

“Once you’re through security, this great window looks out on the airfield. You can see the two bridges, [and] you can see the airplanes,” said Peter Ruggiero, a design principal at architecture firm HOK that designed Terminal B, in a 2020 talk. “You know where you’re going; you have a sense of those distances.”

When asked about all of the vertical movements travelers must make — at least three from curb to gate — Noble said it was solely the result of the terminal site’s small size. It’s not something LaGuardia Gateway Partners has, at least not publicly, received many complaints about. She said complaints are typically about WiFi and flight delays.

In addition to improving the inside, the Port Authority, along with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and city officials, is working to improve the journey to LaGuardia with bus upgrades. A new direct shuttle service is planned from the end of a nearby subway line. A controversial AirTrain to the subway, like the one at JFK, was canceled in early 2023 due to spiraling costs.

The new Terminal C, which is home to Delta Air Lines, is still under construction with two-and-a-half of the four new concourses open. The rest is expected to open this summer.

Construction on the building is still very obvious. Look out the panoramic windows after security, and you see half of the former Terminal D amid arriving and departing planes with an old Delta sign — “NEW YORK’S #1 AIRLINE” — still hanging above the former curbside drop-off area.

Travelers, though, already like what they see.

“How did LaGuardia went from being a joke to this,” X user umichvoter posted in September , along with an image of one of the new multilevel atriums in Terminal C.

How did LaGuardia went from being a joke to this pic.twitter.com/kLMDDWOfSs — umichvoter 🏳️‍🌈 (@umichvoter) September 8, 2023

Like Terminal B, Terminal C goes up where most airport spaces go out. There’s no great hall welcoming travelers when they enter from departures; instead ticketing is on one level and security a level above connected by two three-story atriums filled with public art. A massive, digital screen spanning the space above the security queues shows changing images that reflect the destination of a soon-to-depart flight.

“New York City is such a vertical city,” said Jay Liese, the project principal on Terminal C at architecture firm Corgan. “In some ways we see the three-level [terminal] as being a little bit of a metaphor for New York.”

One thing Corgan and architectural partner Gensler did after security was create soaring atriums at the entrance to the concourses in Terminal C. That makes the place where travelers wait to board their flights feel much larger, and significantly increases the space for restaurants , restrooms and kid play areas.

The concourse atriums are the concessions space in Terminal C, a more dispersed approach than the central hub in Terminal B.

“It becomes a more organic part of the customer’s journey to their gate,” Liese said of the decision to spread out amenities across the terminal.

You can eat a sandwich or pizza at Sunday Supper looking out a floor-to-ceiling window on the ramp where planes are coming and going, or down on the travelers milling about as they wait for their flights. From there, it’s a quick escalator ride down to the concourse floor and walk to the gate for your flight out.

“It has exceeded, frankly, my highest hopes and expectations,” Cotton said of the new LaGuardia while sitting in Terminal B. “The combination of the architecture — light and airy, and you compare that to the old, dark, undersized LaGuardia. [It’s] night and day.”

American airlines changes passenger rules for earning miles — and travel agencies are pissed.

American Airlines has multiple travel advisors up in arms after it announced plans to restrict AAdvantage Miles earnings for certain booking agencies.

The airline behemoth  announced  in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change will take effect on May 1, but American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

American Airlines announced in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change comes as part of the airline’s effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

The airline has tried to convince agencies using the older booking systems to upgrade to newer platforms like the one American uses on its website.

While American  announced  a list would be shared in “late April,” agencies unsure if they’ll make the cut are expressing their distaste for the major change.

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Advisors (ACTA), Foro Latinoamericano de Turismo (FOLATUR), and World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAA) emphasized that any plans to restrict their clients’ earning miles could be detrimental to their agencies.

“It’s clear from the consensus among WTAAA, ACTA and FOLATUR, representing travel professionals around the world, the detriment that American’s decision will have on the travel industry globally,” President and CEO of ASTA, Zane Kerby, told  Travel and Tour World .

American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

Kerby called out American for “operating in bad faith” and was “looking to pad its bottom line at the expense of our valued clients and the millions of consumers who rely on their trusted travel advisor.”

Henry Harteveldt, president of the travel industry market research firm Atmosphere Research Group, told  Fodor’s Travel  the move is a “very inward-looking” perspective on American Airlines.

“It’s not a very consumer-friendly approach, and American is being a bit of a bully here,” Harteveldt explained — adding the move will put loyalty airline members in the crossfire of the company’s dispute with agencies.

The change comes as part of the airline's effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

Harteveldt believes the move is also being monitored by the company’s competitors, who may adopt the change if it’s a success or whose sales teams may swoop in to poach any American flyers unpleased with the new method.

“As risky as American’s actions are, a lot of airlines are watching to see if it works out well for them, because if it does, I would not be surprised to see United and Delta copy it in certain ways,” he told the outlet.

While the airline is deadset on the change, Brett Snyder — author of the popular travel industry blog Crankyflier and CEO of the travel assistance service Cranky Concierge — said the move could cause “confusion” for the company’s flyers who already are trying to navigate their “frequent changes.”

American Airlines said they change is set to take effect May 1.

“The biggest impact will likely be on business travelers who may not have a choice of where to book depending upon company policy,” Snyder told the outlet.

“The fact that American still hasn’t told everyone who is or is not preferred adds more to the confusion.”

As the airline industry waits to hear who American will list as their “preferred agencies,” occasional travelers may also feel the weight of the change, Snyder explained.

He worries that some agencies may not disclose that to their customers during the booking process.

World Travel Agents Associations Alliance calls itself the global voice of the travel agency distribution channel.

Also, the move could affect cruise lines that book airfares as part of their packages, who may opt against using certain agencies not listed as one of American’s preferred agencies.

The changes will only affect travelers who collect AAdvantage Miles for their flights on American.

Flyers using corporate accounts with American will continue to earn miles for their flights no matter which booking channel they use unless they book a Basic Economy fare.

Travelers collecting miles from other Oneworld partners—the global airline alliance American is a member of with 13 other Airlines, such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Malaysia Airlines—will continue to earn miles for American Airlines flights regardless of booking channel.

UN committee fails to reach consensus on full Palestinian membership, Security Council president says

From CNN’s Richard Roth and Michael Rios

A specialized UN committee failed to reach a consensus Thursday on Palestinian membership in the United Nations, according to the president of the UN Security Council.

Two-thirds of the committee members were in favor of moving on with membership, with many countries arguing that “Palestine fulfills all the criteria that are required” to be granted full state member status, Malta's Ambassador and Security Council President Vanessa Frazier said.

She added that no one explicitly objected to the membership qualifications.

Frazier also said she would circulate a draft report on the deliberations as soon as Friday. If the committee doesn’t agree on the report, it could hold another meeting to iron out any differences.

Asked whether the process of deliberating Palestinian membership in the committee is now over, Frazier said, “Unless the next step of agreeing (to) the report of the committee warrants another meeting to iron out the differences, it’s not foreseen that there would be any further committee action.”

But she noted that any UN Security Council member can still table a resolution to vote on Palestinian membership at any time, regardless of the committee's report.

The US and Middle East brace for a possible Iran attack that could escalate the conflict. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

People attend the funeral procession for seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members killed in a strike in Syria, which Iran blamed on Israel, in Tehran on April 5.

Concerns about a possible Iranian attack against Israel has prompted many diplomatic conversations around the globe.

Here are some developments on diplomacy around the threat of an attack:

  • Iran's statement: The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
  • US and UK diplomacy: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with the foreign ministers of Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to tell them that countries should be urging Iran not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East after  threats made by Tehran against Israel,  according to a State Department spokesperson. The top US general for the Middle East is also in Israel . Additionally, Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict .
  • Israel receives US support: Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The US officials expressed the country's support for Israel against Iranian threats. Gallant warned that such an attack could lead to a regional escalation.
  • Travel restrictions: The US State Department restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran. “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted. US officials  are on high alert  for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.

Meanwhile, here's some other updates:

  • Hamas on hostages: A member of Hamas' political bureau said   a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations. "Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza, Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose."
  • Updates on aid to Gaza: It is clear that Israel is working to ramp up humanitarian aid to Gaza, but it has not yet implemented all of the measures it has announced, a top United Nations humanitarian official said. Aid coming in trucks from Israel has to be "segregated from water, from food, from medical items" before it goes into Gaza, said Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem. “Getting 400 trucks from Kerem Shalom doesn't mean 400 trucks go into Gaza,” he said, adding that the logistical complications are numerous, and take time to resolve. He also said Israel’s restrictions on movement inside the strip complicate matters.

Anera charity resumes work in Gaza after pausing when Israeli strike killed 7 World Central Kitchen staff

From CNN's Tala Alrajjal and Mohammed Tawfeeq

American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) has resumed Gaza operations "after a temporary pause" following an airstrike that killed seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers on April 1.

"As you know, the decision to temporarily pause our operations was not an easy one. We followed the direction of our staff in Gaza, who've faced death, loss, and destruction since the start of the war," Sean Carroll, the president and CEO of Anera, said in a statement on Thursday. "After the killing of Anera staff member Mousa Shawwa , followed by the attack that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, we made the difficult but necessary decision to pause aid operations on April 2," Carroll added in the statement.

Carroll said Israeli authorities informed him during a meeting Thursday that "certain measures would be taken to protect humanitarian aid workers in Gaza – including Anera's staff."

"With the full support of our Gaza team, we have determined that the circumstances have changed sufficiently to resume our vital humanitarian work in Gaza," Carroll said.

Anera on Thursday resumed "full operations in Gaza to deliver meals, food parcels, hygiene kits, tents, medical treatments, and more to families in dire need," according to the statement.

Iran says its imperative to punish Israel could have been avoided had UN Security Council condemned attack

From CNN’s Natalie Barr and Adam Pourahmadi

Emergency services work at a building hit by an air strike in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.

“Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," the  mission said on X.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on April 1, according to a statement from the UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarric. A Security Council discussion was held on April 2 to discuss the attack, but differences among members prevented any formal action or condemnation from taking place.

The United States is on high alert and actively preparing for a “significant” attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region  in response to the strike in Damascus  that killed top Iranian commanders.

UK foreign secretary warns Iran not to draw Middle East into wider conflict

From CNN's Natalie Barr

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron speaks during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, DC, on April 9.

Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict following a series of escalating threats made by Iran toward Israel.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that the United Kingdom was "deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks," according to a post on X .

Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency on Thursday reported that Amir-Abdollahian had told Cameron that the silence from the UK and the United States following Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week only served to encourage Israel to continue waging war in Gaza and expand its conflict in the region.

US and Israeli defense leaders discuss fears of Iranian attack

From CNN’s Michael Conte in Washington, DC, Tamar Michaelis in Jerusalem and Larry Register in Atlanta

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant today to “reaffirm the US ironclad commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson.

The call comes a day after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel " must be punished and it will be" following a strike on an Iranian embassy compound in Syria that killed seven Iranian officials.

Israel “will not tolerate an Iranian attack on its territory,” the statement read, adding that the two defense leaders also discussed detailed preparations “for an Iranian attack against the State of Israel.”

Gallant said an Iranian attack on Israel could lead to a regional escalation.

It is the second discussion held between Gallant and Austin over the past week, according to the statement. Gallant expressed his appreciation for Austin’s personal commitment to the security of the State of Israel and for the deepening cooperation between the defense establishments of both countries, as well as between the Israel Defense Forces and US CENTCOM.

State Department restricts personnel travel in Israel amid concerns over Iranian threats

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

The US State Department has restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran.

“Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice,” a  security alert  posted by the US Embassy Thursday said. “U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel.” “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he would not “speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees and family members’ personal travel, but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel.”

“We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days,” Miller said. “Israel is in a very tough neighborhood and we have been monitoring the security situation. You saw us slightly adjust for travel warnings at the beginning of this conflict and we conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground.”

US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.

Hamas says ceasefire with Israel is essential to collect data on hostages held in Gaza by different groups

From CNN's Abeer Salman and Mohammed Tawfeeq

A member of Hamas' political bureau said   a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations.

"Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose," he added.

Naim's statement was in response to questions from media outlets about whether Hamas has been rejecting the latest proposal, which was made in Cairo over the weekend, because it can not release 40 hostages in the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire deal.

According to an Israeli official and a source familiar with the discussions, Hamas indicated it is currently unable to identify and track down those 40 Israeli hostages, raising fears that more hostages may be dead than are publicly known.

CNN's record of the conditions of the hostages also suggests there are fewer than 40 living hostages who meet the proposed criteria.
