Complete guide to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood

Tarah Chieffi

When Mario Bros. made its arcade debut in 1983, an 8-bit star was born. Though Mario had made appearances in a handful of Nintendo games before getting his very own video game, he – along with his brother Luigi – stole the hearts of video game fans everywhere and the release kick-started one of the most iconic gaming franchises ever created.

In the four decades since, kids of all ages have interacted with Mario's world on two-dimensional screens.

Now, you can step through the screen and into a living, breathing, four-dimensional world with Mario, Luigi and the whole gang at Universal Studios Hollywood's Super Nintendo World.

What is Super Nintendo World?

Super Nintendo World is Universal Studios Hollywood's newest land.

As the name suggests, the land is themed around popular Nintendo games and characters — most notably Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach. Of course, no video game would be complete without a big, bad villain, and you'll find Bowser's evil presence looming in the land, as well.

virtual tour super nintendo world

Upon walking through the warp pipe into Super Nintendo World, the land's immersive theming effectively makes you a video game character. There are points to score, achievements to unlock and bad guys to overcome, spanning a multitude of games from the Super Mario multiverse.

Whether you want to race to victory in a real-life Mario Kart game, visit Bowser's Castle or dine at Toadstool Cafe, there are plenty of ways to interact with the various elements of the land during your visit.

Getting into Super Nintendo World

Entry to Super Nintendo World is included with your regular admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. During the busy weeks (and maybe months) after the land's Feb. 17 opening, you may need to make a virtual line reservation to enter.

If the land is at capacity during your visit, a virtual line system will be in place. After you enter the park, you can check the Universal Studios Hollywood app to find out if you need a spot in the virtual line to enter the land. If a virtual line is in place, you'll be able to choose a time to return to the land and you can enjoy the rest of the park until it's time to "warp" over to Super Nintendo World.

Ticketholders and annual pass holders with Universal Express skip-the-line access as well as guests on a VIP tour can use their Universal Express benefits to enter Super Nintendo World once per day if the land is using the reservation system. If the land isn't at capacity, you can enter the land without a reservation and press start on your day of fun.

You can also buy your way into Super Nintendo World an hour before it opens to other guests by adding a Super Nintendo World Early Access Ticket to your regular admission.

The prices vary by day but should generally be between $20 and $25, and allow entry to the land one hour before the park's opening. You'll also get Universal Express access to the Studio Tour before 11 a.m. on the day of your visit.

Rides at Super Nintendo World

The only ride at Super Nintendo World is Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge. To get to the ride, you must pass through the imposing Bowser's Castle. The queue winds through the corridors of his castle, showcasing Mario Kart trophies, memorabilia and evidence of Bowser's plan to defeat Team Mario along the way.

virtual tour super nintendo world

This interactive, multisensory ride puts you behind the wheel in a high-stakes Mario Kart race. Just like in the Mario Kart game you've played at home, you can race through familiar courses, throw turtle shells and fight to beat Team Bowser.

The real-life version relies on a mix of projection mapping technology, colorful physical set pieces and augmented reality goggles to bring the popular racing game to life. The ride doesn't move fast like a roller coaster. It is relatively slow in speed compared to many theme park thrill rides, but the technology makes the ride feel like a high-speed race.

virtual tour super nintendo world

Each car holds four riders, and everyone in your car has to work together to earn enough coins to beat Team Bowser.

How do you earn coins? By successfully "steering" your car in the right direction and throwing turtle shells at the bad guys.

It can be a little tricky at first using the steering wheel to maneuver the car, but to throw turtle shells you simply look at the bad guy you are going for and hit the trigger on your steering wheel. Because Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge puts you in the driver's seat, the outcome changes every time you race.

You must be 40 inches tall to ride Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge and 48 inches tall to ride without a supervising adult.

Related: How Universal is stepping out of the mouse's shadow to become the hottest theme park

Just because Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge is the only ride in Super Nintendo World right now doesn't necessarily mean that will always be the case. Universal Studios Japan's version of the land has a second ride called Yoshi's Adventure and a Donkey Kong-themed roller coaster is scheduled to open in 2024.

It is expected that Super Nintendo World at Universal's new Epic Universe in Orlando will also have all three of these rides when it opens in 2025.

Activities at Super Nintendo World

Like any good video game, Super Nintendo World follows a storyline.

As soon as you walk through the warp pipe and step into the land, it is your mission to retrieve the golden mushroom that Bowser Jr. has stolen from Princess Peach's castle. To complete your mission, you'll need to collect keys from around the land, which you can earn by playing a series of interactive games.

virtual tour super nintendo world

There are four games to choose from, and you need to beat three of them in order to enter Bowser Jr.'s lair for the final boss battle. If you can beat Bowser Jr., the golden mushroom will be restored to its rightful owner, and you'll emerge from his lair victorious.

Each game will have you facing off against various Nintendo baddies like Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Piranha Plant and Thwomp. Some can be done on your own and others are easier to complete with a team.

virtual tour super nintendo world

Completing these "key challenges" isn't the only way to interact with Super Nintendo World. Almost everything you see is meant to be explored or played with ... and all of these things can help you earn stamps that will boost your score. Meet Mario and Luigi? You earn a stamp. Punch a pow block? You earn a stamp. Earn a top score on Mario Kart? You earn a stamp.

To earn coins and stamps, compete in key challenges and keep score within the land, you'll need to purchase a Power-Up Band. Power-Up Bands are available at kiosks inside the land or at Super Nintendo World retail locations inside the park and at CityWalk.

virtual tour super nintendo world

There are six character designs to choose from and each band costs $40. The character you choose determines your "team" in the land. Anyone playing that day with the same Power-Up Band design as yours is now your teammate. You can see how your team stacks up against other teams on the scoreboards or in the app.

You don't need a Power-Up Band to enjoy the land, but it is well worth the money if you want to fully experience the land and compete with your friends and family to see who can get the highest score.

Dining at Super Nintendo World

Toadstool Cafe is Super Nintendo World's signature restaurant and each item on the menu is almost as adorable as Chef Toad himself. Housed within a giant red-and-white mushroom, you can watch Chef Toad preparing dishes like a Piranha Plant Caprese Salad, Mario Burger and Fire Flower Spaghetti & Meatballs on video screens around the restaurant.

virtual tour super nintendo world

Keep your eyes on the screens while you dine, because Bowser may make a surprise appearance during your visit.

virtual tour super nintendo world

For dessert, you can have Question Block Tiramisu, Mt. Beanpole Cake or a Princess Peach Cupcake, and there is also a specialty Super Star Lemon Squash boba drink available, as well as water and soft drinks. There are even specialty souvenir cups you can bring home with you.

Shopping at Super Nintendo World

virtual tour super nintendo world

You can find Super Nintendo World merchandise at the 1-Up Factory inside the land or at the Super Nintendo World store at CityWalk or inside the park at the Character Shop and the Feature Presentation Shop. You'll find everything from plush toy versions of the characters in the land to apparel, mugs, home decor and more.

Super Nintendo World tips and secrets

virtual tour super nintendo world

  • There is no "right way" to experience Super Nintendo World. The land is meant to be explored. If you find a doorway, staircase or anything else that looks as if it's meant to be discovered, give it a try. You never know what surprises you may find.
  • You can use the Super Nintendo World map in the Universal Studios Hollywood app to find the interactive elements, key challenges and character meet-and-greets within the land.
  • When you get into your Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge ride vehicle, remember to tap your Power-Up Band on the steering wheel. This will sync up the points you score on the ride with your daily total so you can see how you rank against your friends and family.
  • If you have a Nintendo Switch, you can tap your Power-Up Band to your Switch to unlock exclusive content.
  • There are four "M" symbols on walls throughout the land. Tap your Power-Up Band over the symbol to discover hidden 8-bit characters from the original Super Mario Bros.
  • If you follow the staircase to the left of the entrance to Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, you'll find binoculars that look out over the land. They show a real-time feed of the land with a few surprises sprinkled in. Zoom in on the characters and objects you see to reveal Easter eggs and earn stamps.
  • Plan to spend at least two to three hours exploring Super Nintendo World. You can always stay longer, but that is the minimum amount of time you need to experience all the land has to offer.

Bottom line

Universal Studios Hollywood's new Super Nintendo World is colorful, vibrant and just plain joyful.

All around you, people are having fun living out their video game dreams and the feeling is infectious. You'll find that you can't walk past a question block without punching it and that you want to ride Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge over and over again to see if you can beat your previous score.

Once you start playing a video game, it's hard to stop. At Super Nintendo World, you don't have to. The land is the game and you are the player. And this time, it's not "game over" until you say so.

Screen Rant

Super nintendo world interactive tour lets you experience it from home.

Super Nintendo World has released an interactive map letting fans fly around the theme park in a 3D virtual tour of every stop to make in the park.

Super Nintendo World's grand opening is coming up, and to give fans a sneak peek of the park that they may not be able to visit for a while, Universal Studios Japan has released an interactive map of the Mario-themed world. Unfortunately COVID-19 will probably be keeping tourists out of the park for several months still, so for now they will have to settle for the virtual tour of this slice out of Mario and the gang's life.

The characters from the Mario games have become iconic ambassadors of Nintendo, so it is only fitting that the next step in Nintendo's alternate media endeavors surround the well-known characters like Mario, Princess Peach and Yoshi. Nintendo saw a decline in popularity after the Wii U came and went, but the Nintendo Switch has taken off thanks to Animal Crossing: New Horizons and global sales for 2020 were excellent . With their IP back in the forefront of gamers' minds, Nintendo was originally going to open their new theme-park in July of 2020 before the Tokyo Olympics. However, the pandemic delayed the launch until it's new and confirmed opening date, February 4th. The Osaka park will be the first Super Nintendo World to open, but Universal Studios plans to build one in all of their locations.

Although the park will open less than a month from now, international travel is still banned in many parts of the world, and will still be a hazardous activity for some months to come. Nintendo has released an interactive map of the park that can be seen on the Super Nintendo World website for fans to travel through until they can visit the real thing. Those taking the virtual tour can fly through the park rendered in 3D, stopping at each attraction where they can click the little button on the bottom right to get more information about what they're seeing, from a Yoshi ride to the food and merchandise stores.

Super Nintendo World is doing something completely new and different from other theme parks as well with the power of technology. While moving around the park visitors can collect various items including virtual coins and character stamps by using an app on their phones connected to a special Nintendo-themed wristband . According to Nintendo, the wristband and app will make visitors use their entire bodies to interact with and explore everything in the park.

Visitors will get the chance to feel just like Mario as they hit Question Blocks around the park, once they are finally allowed to take a trip to see the Mushroom Kingdom. Until then taking a virtual tour through Super Nintendo World will have to satiate fans' anticipation for a long-time favorite franchise come to life.

Super Nintendo World's website is live, featuring a delightful virtual tour

Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World theme park is set to open in February, but the website is live with a virtual tour of the park now.

TJ Denzer

One of the few bright and joyful things in 2020 and coming into 2021 has been the building up of Nintendo and Universal Studios’ Super Nintendo World theme park. The park is a beautiful cornucopia of Super Mario Bros. fanfare and activity and it will be opening up in February of this year with the opening location in Japan. That said, the website for the park has opened up already and you can go to it now to take a virtual tour of Super Nintendo World and its attractions.

The Super Nintendo World interactive website opened up recently, ahead of the first park’s opening in Osaka, Japan on February 4, 2021. Heading to the site invites viewers into a full-on digital tour of the park. Much of what we saw in the December 2020 Nintendo Direct showing is on display here, including a peek Mario Kart Racing inside Bowser’s Castle, a journey with Yoshi to fight Bowser Jr., a look at Kinopio’s Cafe run by Chef Toad, and much more.

Super Nintendo World has always looked like an absolute delight and the website is just another glimpse into the fun. The Japan location will be the first to open, and progress on further parks around the world, including the United States, is currently delayed. That said, it’s worth noting that parks such as the version at Orlando Universal Studios are still in the works, even if the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed things down a bit. With any luck (and some continued efforts to combat the ongoing coronavirus issues), we’ll all be able to enjoy a bit of Super Nintendo World in the near future.

Stay tuned going into February as the first Super Nintendo World Universal Studios park opens. We’ll have more news and information for you as it becomes available.

FULL GUIDE: Virtual Line Reservations for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood will be used ‘as needed’

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood packs a bunch of fun into a very small footprint and that unfortunately does mean that there is limited capacity for not just the new attraction but also the land and all of its offerings. To help manage demand on the busiest days, the park will implement their Virtual Line Reservation system to ease with the flow of guests into the highly-anticipated new area.

Here’s what you need to know about Super Nintendo World Virtual Line Reservations  starting February 17, 2023 . Letsa go!

EDITOR’S NOTE: This post was modified 2/16/23 with additional info about Universal Express and VIP priveleges

First and foremost, Virtual Line Reservation is NOT always going to be needed to enter Super Nintendo World .

To check availability in the Universal Studios Hollywood app, simply navigate to the Virtual Line Reservation section from the homepage of the app; if you see Super Nintendo World listed, you will be able to secure your Virtual Line Reservation. If Super Nintendo World is NOT requiring Virtual Line Reservation on the day of your visit, simply head to the land for entry.

It’s important to keep in mind, that the Virtual Line Reservation is for entry into Super Nintendo World only . There is NOT currently a Virtual Line Reservation system for the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge attraction so everyone must wait in the standard attraction queue upon entering the land.

Reservation-free entry into Super Nintendo World is available to guests with Universal Express and VIP once per day (and after 3pm for Platinum Pass members) when reservations are required to enter the land.

Most of us probably won’t be able to travel to Japan for the opening of Universal Studios Japan’s Super Nintendo World , but there’s a second option for checking out the theme park: a digital walkthrough available on the Super Nintendo World website .

Sure, nothing will be as magical as the real thing, but the interactive map is our best look at the park yet. On the website, visitors are able to fly through the park, checking out different rides, like the Mario Kart Koopa’s Challenge and a Yoshi ride, called Yoshi’s Adventure. Everything is rendered in 3D, with looks at the different interactive elements at the park down to the food and gift shops.

You can see a full overhead view on the map below.

Super Nintendo World map with different locations marked

Nintendo shared details on its food and shopping options last year, but there are plenty more photos available now , including this burger with a very cute Mario hat. There’s also a mushroom pizza bowl with a dough cap, and a Question Block tiramisu. It’s a theme park, so you can also expect souvenir popcorn buckets — both in Mario Kart and Superstar styles.

We’ve also got a great look at the Power Up Bands that will partner with a smartphone app. Naturally, they’re also very cute , and designed to collect points as players “play” their way though the park. Alongside these bands, visitors to the park will also be able to meet Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and toads — and according to the website, people with Power Up Bands may have “more fun.” I don’t know what that means, but I am excited to — one day — find out.

Until then, it’s just me endlessly scrolling through the digital walkthrough.

Universal Announces Super Nintendo World Will Open in Florida

Just as Universal Studios Hollywood was celebrating its opening of the Mario-themed park, it was announced that another iteration will be heading to Orlando.

Universal's Super Nintendo World will be coming to it's Orlando resort.

Announced by Universal Parks & Resorts chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury during last week's grand opening celebration of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood last week, the Orlando location will be the third in the world (with the first two being in Japan and California).

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood has been described as a “innovative, immersive, and highly-anticipated themed land." Guests enter the colorful land via the brand’s signature green pipe entryway and are then fully immersed in the vibrant, 360-degree world of the beloved characters.

The land features headlining attraction Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, inspired by the beloved video game series. The never before done attraction blends augmented reality (AR) with physical set pieces and projection mapping technology set along a moving ride track. A cornerstone of the land is interactive gameplay features which welcomes guests to punch the famed “?” blocks to collect digital golden coins and compete with other park goers.

Much like the video games, real time rankings are depicted on screens in the land. Other interactive games and the land’s signature restaurant, Toadstool Café, round out the experience.

No announcement on whether attractions from the Hollywood or Japan version will be replicated in Orlando has been made, but with the available land space more than one is anticipated.

When Super Nintendo World opens in Florida it will be a part of the upcoming, highly anticipated Epic Universe park, expected to open in 2025.

The news comes at a time of great expansion for the company that includes an upcoming Minion Land set to open summer 2023 at Universal Orlando Resort, an upcoming theme park in Texas , and a year-round immersive horror attraction in Las Vegas.

A Real Life Super Nintendo World (With Mario Kart!) Has Opened In Japan

Alex Landon

And you can take a virtual tour.

There’s no feeling in life quite like the potent mix of frustration, fear, and joy that is tackling Rainbow Road on Mario Kart. At least, not in the UK there isn’t. However, when three new Super Nintendo World theme parks start throwing open their doors around the world, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the world of Mario and pals – complete with a life-size Mario Kart ride! This month, the first of the three parks opened in Osaka, Japan, and it’s only confirmed our belief that London needs one, like now. When and where is Super Nintendo World opening?

Super Nintendo World will be appearing at Universal Studios’ parks around the world, and so far three locations have been announced:

virtual tour super nintendo world

You’ll notice that list (sadly) doesn’t include the UK or even Europe, but it does give you one more reason to jet off in search of a Yoshi-led adventure.

What is the Mario Kart ride at Super Nintendo World like?

Super nintendo world

Now, the bit you’ve all been waiting for! The Mario Kart ride sees four-person karts ‘race’ around a course based on levels from the game, and featuring famous Nintendo characters. Augmented reality headsets are expected to bring the indoor ride to life, and there’s even a prize if you’re able to beat Bowser and his team. The route will take riders through a series of classic Mario Kart worlds, from Wario’s Castle to Jungle Parkway.

Other rides include a gentler Yoshi ride that takes you all around the park (this is expected to follow at the remaining parks), a Mushroom Kingdom, and both Peach’s Castle and Bowser’s Castle.

What about the games and challenges at Super Nintendo World?

Super nintendo world

It’s not just about the rides here, because there’s plenty else to get stuck into! The Super Nintendo Worlds are intended as a fully immersive journey through some of the world’s most beloved video games, which will boast shops, restaurants, and interactive gameplay in addition to the rides.

Super nintendo world

That last part is arguably the most exciting, for the use of hi-tech ‘Power Up Bands’ will invite you to become part of the game. Visitors are invited to explore the park whilst collecting digital coins, participate in challenges, and even go head-to-head with rival gamers through smartphone apps and Nintendo Switches. You’ll even be unable to unlock ‘boss battles’, where perhaps you’ll be able to kick Waluigi in the balls.

And yes, you CAN punch blocks!

Mushrooms that make you twice the size are not currently planned, but you never know. In the meantime, all that’s left to do is start saving for plane tickets, and maybe sharpening your Mario Kart skills on your console of choice…

Universal Studios Japan has offered a virtual web tour of its highly-anticipated amusement park Super Nintendo World . This follows a finalized map of the park that was released around two weeks ago.

The virtual tour takes visitors through the expansive theme park, brought to life by its vibrant Super Mario -themed architecture and animated videos of rides in motion. Attractions like Mario Kart: Koopa’s (Bowser’s) Challenge and Yoshi’s Adventure are shown, which are part of the first phase of Super Nintendo World. The former features a massive staircase alongside a stone statue of Bowser. Exclusive: Virtual Boy Pro Revealed! All the Details on Nintendo's Wildest System Yet

Check out nintendo's surprise headset and its amazing launch game, mario kart: open road.

Brian Altano Avatar

Nintendo has revealed the Nintendo Virtual Boy Pro, a new hardware accessory compatible with Nintendo Switch consoles that looks like one of its wildest projects yet.

The Virtual Boy Pro appears to be a VR headset-style device that docks into the Nintendo Switch system while detached Joy-Con controllers control the action on screen, superimposing gameplay over the player’s real-life surroundings at home or away. The Virtual Boy Pro joins a growing list of official first-party Nintendo Switch accessories like Ring Fit , a hula hoop shaped exercise thing that also involves a different thing strapped to your leg, and Nintendo Labo , a cardboard box that had other smaller cardboard boxes inside it.

Over 140 million Switch consoles have been sold since it was released in 2017.

The Virtual Boy Pro will allow Nintendo Switch owners to experience a wide variety of newly-revealed titles in iconic Nintendo franchises, now playable in augmented reality. In one scene we see a player use the device to play the all-new Mario Kart: Open Road while operating an actual motor vehicle, leading to the sounds of tires screeching and crashing noises followed by cheers of excitement from iconic Mario Bros. character Luigi. It is unclear if the player survives the automobile crash in real life.

Mario Kart: Open Road lets you turn your boring real-life car into a racing kart. Wahoo!

Nintendo had previously experimented with augmented reality (also referred to as “AR” by people who didn’t want to say the word “augmented” a bunch of times a day) with the Nintendo 3DS, a 3D capable handheld device that came bundled with a handful of cards that most players immediately lost or discarded on purpose.

“When we think about our history of beloved and successful handheld and console hardware here at Nintendo,” stated legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, “ we specifically don’t think about the Virtual Boy at all , mostly because it wasn’t beloved or successful. It also wasn’t a handheld or a console, really.”

He then added, “What even was it? That was really weird of us, honestly. Still can’t believe we pulled that off, if you can even call a product that was almost immediately discontinued as ‘pulling that off.’ Anyway, I personally loved it, and I’ve been at Nintendo for a long time so when I wanted to bring it back they had to listen to me. It’s not like they can fire me and I’ll never quit. I invented Donkey Kong. He’s like King Kong but much smaller and he wears a tie, like he’s going to a job interview. He changed the world. I also made up Mario.”

Miyamoto will be turning 72 in November, and has been with Nintendo for almost fifty years. His favorite foods are ramen, pasta and any kind of noodles in general. IGN reached out to Nintendo for more fun factoids, but have not gotten any response.

It's like the Nintendo Switch 2... sort of

While Nintendo fans around the world have spent years anticipating thea Nintendo Switch 2 andor Nintendo Switch Pro — a much-rumored, more powerful follow-up to 2017’s hit Nintendo Switch console — it seems they’ll have to make do with the Virtual Boy Pro instead.

Nintendo hasn’t revealed a price for the device yet, although the original Virtual Boy system had a launch MSRP of $179.95. However, that was in 1995 where the average sitcom family of five could afford a spacious suburban home on a single income and the highest-grossing movie of the year was Batman Forever, so things are definitely a little different now. Demonstrably worse in a lot of ways when it comes to the house stuff, but at least 2022’s The Batman is a better Batman movie than Batman Forever .

Everyone doubted Robert Pattinson as Batman but that’s because they only watched him in Twilight and Harry Potter, and they didn’t watch him in Good Time or The Lighthouse where he totally ruled and showed a lot of range and acting talent.

What did you think of Val Kilmer’s powerhouse performance in Batman Forever ? And more importantly, will you be pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch Virtual Boy Pro? Let us know in the comments!
