Marmaris Warnings and Dangers

There is plenty to see and do while visiting Marmaris . With this though can come some dangers. Common sense will get you far, but it is best to pair it with some advice on skipping out on other potentially dangerous situations.

Booking Day Trips

There are plenty of day-trip opportunities when visiting Marmaris . However, you need to go to the right booking locations for this. Signing up for a tour in your hotel is the best way to go. Outside destinations offer varying levels of service while some are downright scams. Your hotel will not set you up with a scam, so if you want to ensure you avoid any possible loss of cash from paying a fake agency, talk to your hotel.

Paying Extra for AC

It can get hot. The problem is, many places charge far more just to have air conditioning in your room. Some locations may charge you an AC fee by the day. If you’re in town for just a few days you may end up spending $50+ for the AC. Sometimes just a cool breeze is enough to keep you comfortable. At a local super market you can pick up a dirt cheap clip-on fan you can attach to your bed. Many locals use this as a form of cooling and it works great for the price.

Never Jaywalk

Depending on where you are from, jaywalking is almost a way of life. Yes, it technically is illegal, but outside of a few locations (such as Hawaii) where police will stop and write you a citation, you can do as you please. That is not the case here. While the police might not write you a ticket, drivers will be less than likely to look for you as they are accustomed to people crossing in the crosswalk. Failure to do so may end up in you being hit by a vehicle.

Watch Your Drink

Spiking drinks with drugs isn’t as big of a problem here as it is in other locations (simply because drug use can be heavily fined and punished here). However, it still happens, so watch your drink. Don’t leave your drink unattended. If you use the restroom and left your drink, it is best to just get another one (unless a friend was watching it).

Buying Phone Cards

Purchasing phone cards is an inexpensive way to call family back home. It is also a quick way to be scammed out of money. You need to either pick up phone cards before you leave or purchase the cards from the post office when you arrive.

I have been advised, by a reliable source, that there is now a new tourist police in Marmaris.

Wearing a brown uniform they can, apparently, speak English, German and Russian.

If you have any problems then seek them out.

Hopefully they will be of help to everyone.

I have come across them before in Turkey, they are called the Jandarma and are military police part of the Turkish army. A few years ago (2003) we went to Hisaronu, they had just changed over from from the local police (blue uniforms) to the Jandarma (army uniforms) as a result of a boundary change.

An expat told me you could bribe the local police as a lot of bars and restaurants did, but the Jandarma are dead straight and refuse any sort of bribery. In fact they are pro tourist, we saw a dispute in a restaurant between a British tourist and the owner over a bill, the tourist demanded the Jandarma tourist police were called and they colour drained from the owners face, bill settled!!

A lot of them speak English as I asked directions from them and they were very polite and professional. Good news.

I am reliably informed that these new police are not Jandarma.

This is from a friend who lives in Marmaris for a lot of the year.

Hopefully they can get the local taxi drivers in check and stop them making up fixed prices for tourists and use the meter like they are supposed to :)

No they are not Jandarma - they have been in other areas and just now I cannot for the life of me think of their title. Totally escaped me.

Mr Johnson you should insist on the meter and demand he stop and get out of the taxi if he refuses to switch it on.

I do, however the same petty argument and the drivers suddenly unable to speak English gets boring pretty fast, I just stick to using the Dolmus to travel around. Much less hassle

There are two sides to every story!

We use the taxis all the time when in Marmaris and have never had one say he could not speak English.

Last year the police were turning a blind eye to the taxi drivers not using their meters.

The reason for this was that the prices of insurance and fuel had rocketed.

However, the local council had refused to increase the mileage price on the meters and the taxis were running on a negative profit (loss) if they used their meters.

Although we knew this was illegal we also knew enough to understand what a fair price for a particular trip would be. We negotiated and never felt ripped off.

If you don’t like the price on offer get out and get into another taxi. The price will soon come down.

These people need to make a living and the taxi costs in Marmaris, even off the meter is well below what you would pay in the U.K.

So support the taxi drivers and use a bit of common sense and understanding.

Does anybody have the tourist police phone number in Marmaris as we like to have it just in case of emergencies. We usually travel to Egypt and have that number but thankfully never needed it. Thanks in advance for any help.😀😀

Marmaris is a port and beach resort in Lycia , along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. (The boundary of the Mediterranean with the Aegean is generally taken as the Datça peninsula just west.) The town straggles south to run into İçmeler, then the road crosses the mountains to Turunç. This extended township had a population of 95,851 in 2020; this more than doubles in tourist season.

Marmaris is part of the administrative province of Muğla . Public services such as local buses may be listed as if based in Muğla, and if your bag is stolen or you have an accident, that is where the police report will site the incident.

Two large peninsulas extend beyond Marmaris, like the claws of a lobster trying to grab a starfish:

Understand [ edit ]

In antiquity this place was known as Physkos (Φύσκος to its Hellenistic inhabitants). It has a good natural harbour but is hemmed in by mountains, lacking a hinterland, so it never became a major port. Its hills were quarried for marble, hence "Marmaris", though never on the scale of the Marmara Islands closer to wealthy customers in Constantinople. Its invaders (Persians, Alexander the Great, Crusaders then Ottomans) made sure to keep the castle in good repair, but it was the port where you assembled your fleet and sailed on, rather than storming inland. Süleyman the Magnificent did so in preparation for his 1522 assault on Rhodes, a victory which ensured Ottoman control of the East Mediterranean. Horatio Nelson likewise was here in 1798, and Keith and Abercromby in 1801, before sailing on to eject Napoleon Bonaparte's troops from Egypt and the Levant, and tighten Britain's grip on that region.

In peacetime the town remained a small, sleepy commercial and fishing port. It was flattened by the double earthquake of 1957, with only the castle left standing. From the 1980s tourism developed along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts of Turkey, and in 1989 Dalaman airport was upgraded. That put Marmaris within a 90 minute coach transfer, hotels were built over every available space, and the present sprawling resort appeared.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ]

Dalaman airport is 100 km east of Marmaris. Most arrivals are holidaymakers on West European package flights, and are bussed straight to their hotels. Havaş shuttle bus meets domestic flights, which are every couple of hours from Istanbul IST / SAW and from Ankara. This bus takes 90 min from the airport via Dalaman town, Ortaca, Köyceğiz and Gökova, for a fare in 2023 of 110 TL. The airport also has taxis, private transfer companies and car rental.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses from Istanbul take 10-12 hours via Gebze , Izmir and Muğla for a fare in 2023 of 900 TL. Both Pamukkale and Flixbus have buses every two or three hours round the clock, and Metro Turizm run twice a day. At Istanbul, don't be getting aboard that surprisingly cheap quick bus to Marmara Ereğlisi , which will take you to a beach resort but not the one you expected. Buses from Ankara to Marmaris take 12 hours, from Antalya seven, and from Izmir three.

36.8642 28.2757 1 Marmaris Otogarı the bus terminal is north edge of town, 3 km from the beachfront. It's reasonably clean and efficient. You need a dolmuş or taxi to get downtown.

By road [ edit ]

From Istanbul follow O-5 and O-7 (toll) south to Izmir, then Highway E87 / D550 through Aydın and Muğla to Akyaka. The last stretch is on D400 into Marmaris.

By boat [ edit ]

Foot-passenger ferries from Rhodes sail April-Oct, taking an hour. Two companies compete on the route, Feribot Lines and Yeşil Marmaris Lines , with similar fares - in 2023 an adult single is €40. They each have a morning and afternoon sailing so a day trip either way is possible most days, giving you six hours on the other side. There's no car ferry or winter service. Travel via Rhodes for Symi, which has no direct ferry from Turkey.

36.8489 28.282 2 Marmaris ferry terminal is east side of the marina. Taxis await ferries, but it's only 1 km to walk to the castle and downtown via the harbour footbridge. Vehicles have to go around a much longer route, so the taxi driver will wax lyrical about the hike he's spared you.

With your own boat, Marmaris is a Port of Entry into Turkey, so if you arrive from Greek waters you can clear immigration and customs here. Expect quite some uphills and headwinds if trying to do the check-in without an agent as a middleman (as of 2024, it's probably not even possible).

Get around [ edit ]

Dolmuş minibuses are the main way to get around: they ply the city main streets and link the outlying suburbs and villages. You pay a flat fare, which in 2022 within Marmaris was 5 TL (these dolmuşes have a green band across them), and to İçmeler (orange band) was 7 TL.

This site has been fortified for thousands of years but the castle you see now was built by Suleiman the Magnificent in preparation for his 1522 assault on Rhodes. It was shelled by a French warship during World War 1, nevertheless it was one of the few structures in town to withstand the double earthquake of 1957. It was restored from 1979 and opened as a museum in 1991. Adult 75 TL . ( updated Jun 2023 )
• The lighthouse south of the castle is just a harbour light, atop a dinky tower that looks like a sentry box.
• Hafsa Sultan Kervansaray just north of the castle dates from 1545, but it's closed and tumbledown.
• 36.8531 28.2708 2 Atatürk's Statue is the focal point of town, junction of Atatürk Cd along the beachfront with Ulusal Egemenlik Cd through downtown. He looks like he's clinging on to his cap lest the breeze whips it away.
• 36.851 28.2851 3 Günnücek is the easiest entry point to Marmaris National Park, a rugged tract of pine forests with hiking trails.
• 36.8131 28.2964 4 Nimara Cave , Adaköy . The principal attraction of Cennet Island. You can drive or cycle most of the way, then it's a 400 m trail to enter the cave, believed to have been inhabited since 10,000 BC. ( updated Jun 2023 )
• 36.7921 28.2843 5 Phosphorus Cave is Marmaris' equivalent to the Blue Grotto of Capri , a sea cave flooded by ethereal blue light. It's too narrow for boats to enter; you may be able to swim in, but beware sharp rocks above, alongside and below. It's on the south tip of Cennet Island, with no land access. That hasn't prevented idiots from spray-painting the interior.
• 36.992 28.203 6 Sedir Island or Cleopatra Island is in the Gulf of Gökova, reached by boat from Çamlı (off D-400 north of Marmaris) or from Akyaka. Here are the overgrown ruins of Kedrai, with an amphitheatre, sanctuary to Apollo, cistern and city walls. A boardwalk leads through the site and past a small and a large church from the Byzantine era. The cove on the northwest shore is Cleopatra Beach, a gleaming golden strand. This beach is made of ooids, tiny pearl-like limestone spheres, and the Cleopatra legend got started because similar beaches are found in Egypt - Marcus Antonius supposedly imported one such to keep her sweet. But there are several such beaches around Turkey, as well as in the Persian Gulf, Bahamas and elsewhere. The beach material is under strict protection.
• Orata is the smaller island just north with a few similar ruins.

Do [ edit ]

• The beach is sandy though narrow. The strip west of downtown has free public access.
• Water parks are Aqua Dream on Fatih Sultan Mehmet Cd, and Marmaris Atlantis on 203rd Sk. Star has closed down.
• Boat trips circle the bay, usually anti-clockwise via Turunç, Phosphorous Cave, and Cennet island beach.
• Scuba diving centres include Marmaris , Professional Diving Centre and Deep Diving School, all clustered round the harbour.
• The amphitheatre is a modern reconstruction. It remains closed in 2023.
• Jeep safaris explore the Bozburun and Datça peninsulas.
• Hamams - traditional Turkish baths - are in half-a-dozen locations in town, plus the spa hotels offer their own.

Buy [ edit ]

• Grand Bazaar is a covered market along 59th Sk, starting 50 m inland from Atatürk's Statue. It's a modern alley, practical rather than scenic, with most vendors open daily 08:00-01:00.
• Supermarkets: lots of little convenience stores, Migros is the main chain. Somewhat larger is Carrefour on 142nd Sk, open daily 08:00-22:00.
• Pharmacies cluster along Ulusal Egemenlik Cd the main downtown street, and are dotted along the beach strip.
• Reptiles is a fitting name for those who try to sell tortoises and other animals to tourists. The poor creatures will die on your way home of course, but that won't spare you a hefty fine for importing endangered species.

Eat [ edit ]

• Pine honey ( çam balı ) is a local specialty, from the forests around Marmaris. It's darker and more viscous than regular flower honeys, and has woody, resinous undertones. Check your country's import rules before taking any food product home - many prohibit fresh food including honey.

• Taj Mahal is in Karacan Plaza midway along the beachfront, open daily 13:00-23:00. Just to ensure the Brits feel at home, there's also a couple of Chinese restaurants here.

Splurge [ edit ]

The hotels with the best all-round guest ratings usually offer the best dining and can serve non-residents, see Sleep.

Drink [ edit ]

• Beachfront , or rather the main street a block back, has a string of pubs, including two Irish. They also stock the standard Turkish and European beers.
• Bar street is the nickname for Barbaros Cd along the waterfront in the old town. You'll soon figure out why.
• Vineyard: Asarcık is on the Bozburun Peninsula. Most Turkish wine comes from further north.

Sleep [ edit ]

Rates given here are those quoted for independent travellers, but most visitors are on package deals, effectively paying the same room rate but getting a free return flight from Europe. There are some remarkable bargains but you get what you pay for. Rooms with air-con carry a price premium so consider the season when you'll be visiting. Other common gripes are stiff charges to use the room safe, and for Wifi that is ponderously slow, and samey "all-inclusive" meals that impel you out to the town restaurants.

In theory there are by-laws against playing loud music, but they don't apply to hotels, which crank up the volume to ensure every guest enjoys the thumping beat at 1 am. The thinness of the walls also indicates why earthquakes are so destructive in Turkey.

Things To Do In Marmaris

1. go back in time and visit marmaris castle and museum.

One of the most popular things to do in Marmaris is to visit the small and charming Marmaris Castle. Rumoured to have ancient origins dating back to a mind-blowing 3000BC, various civilizations have utilized this incredible fortress over the years including the Persians, Romans, and most recently, the Ottomans. 

One of the most striking features of the castle, and perhaps why it was so vital to various armies, is the fact it is strategically positioned on a hill overlooking Marmaris Bay. Not only would this have been ideal in the event of an invasion, but it provides a commanding view of the surrounding area. 

A bonus of visiting Marmaris Castle is that it includes a visit to the Marmaris Museum located within the castle complex. It houses a huge collection of various artifacts and exhibits from the ancient Greek, Roman, and Ottoman eras including gorgeous pottery, sparkling jewelry, ancient coins, and even stoneware and tools.

The Ottoman section of the museum was the most impressive exhibit, in our opinion, with a wide variety of weapons, uniforms, and naval equipment on display.

2. Explore the quaint streets of Marmaris Old Town (Marmaris Carsi)

Marmaris Old Town, known locally as Marmaris Carsi, is a wonderful place to simply wandering around and explore all the nooks and crannies, shop for boutiques, or relax in a cozy cafe.

These narrow, other-worldly cobbled streets are the epitome of the Mediterranean with the majority of buildings reflecting a stunning blend of Greek, Ottoman, and traditional Turkish influences. It makes for wonderfully picturesque backdrop for photos to capture on a summer holiday. 

As you explore the Old Town, you’ll notice how the streets are lined with a lovely selection of local shops selling handmade jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs, and even small markets where you can haggle for sweet treats and spices.

In the evening, the once quiet streets become a buzzing center point of the city. This is when the best atmosphere for Marmaris’ Old Town can be found, once people have returned from lazying around on the beach, freshened up, and ready to roam the quaint streets in search of some fresh seafood and sip on some tasty cocktails. 

3. Marvel at the Yachts at Marmaris Marina

If you’re looking for things to do in Marmaris at night, then be sure to take an evening stroll around Marmaris Marina and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the South of France.

The luscious tree-covered green mountains nestled in front of a deep orange sunset create a picturesque scene, and a super-impressive display of luxury yachts and boats docked up showcase why this beautiful region of Turkey is a popular favorite amongst the wealthy.

Once you’ve finished dreaming about what you will do with your lottery winnings, you can take a break at one of the many waterfront cafes and restaurants that line the Marina.

Sip on a refreshing Turkish Tea during the day, or sink an Efes or two of an evening, all whilst taking in the Marina’s unique atmosphere.

As well as treating yourself to a tasty meal or some drinks, the Marina also serves as one of the main hubs for various boat trips and excursions where you can book yourself onto a day cruise for the following day.

4. Relax on the Beaches of Marmaris

It’s not a holiday to Marmaris without spending a few days relaxing on the golden sands. There are many beaches in Marmaris and its surrounding areas, but if you want to find the most beautiful, you should opt for a day trip to Cleopatra Beach on Sedir Island.

Admittedly, Marmaris’s beaches aren’t the most picturesque beaches in the world, or in Turkey for that matter, but they are still incredibly popular during the summer months and you’d be crazy not to indulge in some sun, sea, and sand when you’re there. 

Marmaris Beach is the closest to the town center, and as a result, is heaving pretty much for the entirety of summer. The sand is soft, and the waters are clear, though you will be hard-pressed to find a decent spot any time after 11 am.

If you’d like a beach that is a little more idyllic yet still close to Marmaris, then Icmeler Beach is a great choice. Set within a relatively small bay, Icmeler Beach is a hub for water sports and makes for a great day out from Marmaris itself.

Jump on a jet ski and ride the waves, gather up the troops and head out on a banana boat, or even splash the cash and parasail through the deep blue skies with unbelievable views of the beach down below. 

5. Take A Dalyan River Cruise

If you’ve explored pretty much all of what Marmaris town has to offer, then why not jump on a day trip along the Dalyan River? It’s a superb way to see a lesser-visited part of the Dalyan region and you’ll see some incredible sights along the way.

The Dalyan River is a beautiful and quiet reed-lined river that provides a unique opportunity to witness several ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs. These tombs date back hundreds of years and are the final resting place of Kings and Queens of the Lycian era, and showcase the incredible workmanship of the ancient civilizations here. 

After sailing past the rock tombs, you’ll be taken to Dalyan’s iconic mud baths where you’ll be able to indulge in an incredibly therapeutic experience – covering yourself in mineral-rich mud and then letting it harden on your skin. Once the healing properties of the mud have worked their magic, take a dip into the warm thermal springs to wash away the mud and feel how soft your skin has become. 

Following the mud baths, you’ll come across Iztuzu Beach, also known as Turtle Beach, because it’s a significant breeding ground for loggerhead turtles, which sometimes make an appearance by the boats if the captain throws some squid into the waters – this would arguably be the highlight of any trip along the Dalyan River, but it’s not guaranteed. We saw one for all of three seconds and it didn’t come back for another bite.

Most of the Dalyan River cruises also include a lunch on the boat or at one of the riverside restaurants where you’ll be able to enjoy a traditional Turkish meal with your new friends, savouring the delights of fresh seafood.

6. Go On A Day Trip to Rhodes, Greece

If you want to get out of Marmaris for the day, then why not head out of the country altogether and go on a day trip to the Greek island of Rhodes? Marmaris’s proximity to the island makes this entirely possible within a day. 

The best way to visit Rhodes for the day is on a day tour, since they can whisk you around the highlights of the island and take you back to your hotel after.

Your adventure begins by being picked up from your hotel and then enjoy the scenic ferry journey across the Aegean, relaxing on the deck and enjoying the sea breeze. Upon arriving in Rhodes, you’ll usually have around six hours of exploration time before it’s time to head back, which is plenty of time to see the main sights. 

Rhodes’ medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should be the first thing on your itinerary. The Palace of the Grand Master is up next, serving as the residence of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Its medieval architecture is incredibly unique and offers panoramic views from the palace grounds. 

For a spot of lunch, indulge in one of the many Greek tavernas that line the cobbled streets and sample the unique dishes of the region like moussaka or souvlaki. Mandraki Harbor is also a unique stopping point on any trip to Rhodes, with its iconic windmills and the Fort of St. Nicholas an imposing building of the island. 

Before it’s time to return back to your ferry, shop for souvenirs to surprise those back home with something unique and unexpectedly Greek. On your return journey, you’ll be able to witness the gorgeous sunset dip beyond the Aegean which makes for the cherry on the cake of a busy but memorable day trip from Marmaris. 

7. Splash Around Atlantis Water Park

If you’re looking for things to do in Marmaris with the kids, then a visit to Marmaris Atlantis Water Park would make for an excellent, fun-filled day out. It’s the largest water park in the city and features a wide selection of thrilling water slides, a wave pool, soft play areas for the younger ones, and even a mini golf course. 

The water park is only open during the summer months from the beginning of May right through to the end of October. If you’re visiting Marmaris and haven’t rented a car, don’t worry, the water park also offers visitors free shuttle service to and from your hotel.

It’s worth noting that the slides close for 30 minutes from 1pm – 1:30pm, but luckily, the water park is virtually located on a beautiful sandy beach which you also get access to while you wait for it to reopen.

It’s not an issue to leave for the beach and then come back into the park for more slides or even a bite to eat at one of the onsite restaurants. 

8. Marvel at Amos Ancient City

One of the most impressive historical sights local to the Marmaris region is the ancient city of Amos. Situated along the Bozburun Peninsula just a short 20km drive away from Marmaris center, Amos and its crumbling ruins date back to the Hellenistic period with the city thought to have been founded in the 6 th century BC by ancient Greek settlers. 

Being thousands of years old, the archeological site is just ruins, however, some are better preserved than others and provide a valuable insight into the city’s past.

The city walls are the most notable, along with a small amphitheater that would’ve been used for performances and events, a temple, and several towers and tombs. Following examination of several inscriptions found in the ancient city, it is believed that the early inhabitants of Amos had originated from the Greek island of Rhodes just a short boat ride away. 

Visitors can reach Amos by car from Turunc town or Marmaris which is a little further afield but still within a short driving distance. It’s free to enter the ruins however it is possible to get a knowledgeable guide who can provide you with expert information on the ancient city. 

9. Take A Day Trip to Ephesus

Perhaps one of Turkey’s most iconic landmarks is the Ancient City of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the Ancient Wonders of the World.

The city of Ephesus dates back to the 10th Century BC, where it was first settled by the Greeks and used as a port city known for its trading links.

Today, it’s one of the largest and best preserved archaeological sites in the country, and where you can marvel at some grand works of Greco-Roman architecture.

The Temple of Artemis, Library of Celsus, and nearby House of the Virgin Mary are notable landmarks in the complex worth seeing.

Visiting Ephesus from Marmaris is a full day activity, since the ruins are 190km away (2.5 hours drive by car), but fortunately the trip can be made easy by booking onto a day tour.

10. Go Scuba Diving

Diving is another popular thing to do in Marmaris and is one of the main reasons why people flock to this part of the Turkish coast.

With its stunning underwater caves, vibrant reefs, and intriguing shipwrecks, Marmaris has diving sites that have intrigued divers for many years.

One of the most popular diving sites is Baca Cave, also known as Chimney Cave, which is a sea cave that lies between 5-50 meters below the surface.

Another popular site is Kadirga Cove , where you’ll find the shipwreck of a sunken ship from the Hellenistic period.

The crystal-clear waters of Marmaris and the diverse array of marine life and underwater landmarks to explore make it one of the best destinations in Turkey to go diving.

Whether you’ve scuba dived before or it’s your first time, diving in Marmaris promises an immersive journey into the Mediterranean’s treasures.

11. Take A Buggy Safari

Looking for more adventurous things to do? Then perhaps a buggy safari would pump some adrenaline through your veins!

The buggy safari is not only an off-road experience for the adventurous and thrill seeking, but a bonding experience for you and your travel mates.

As you explore the lush landscapes of Marmaris from your 4×4 buggy, passing through pine forests and rivers, you’ll get to battle your mates in a water fight game! That’s right, they give you water pistols so you can turn your experience into a water fight.

What’s more is that you don’t need a driving license for this experience since you’ll be driving around inside a private area, and full instructions are given upon arrival.

If you’re looking for a fun way to kill a couple of hours, this is certainly up there as one of the most fun activities you can do in Marmaris.

12. Relax In A Turkish Bath

If you’re finding Marmaris to be overcrowded and chaotic, then you might want to experience some relaxation instead. A Turkish Bath is the ultimate way to wind down and rejuvenate your body – especially if you’re visiting in the winter.

If you’ve never had a Turkish Bath before, allow me to enlighten you. The Turkish Bath experience is a combination of massage, body scrub, steaming, and washing.

You begin by sitting in a steam room on a marble slab (like the one pictured above), where the steam opens your pours and cleanses your body.

After that, you will be scrubbed down by a natir with a corse mitten, and then massaged with foam on a hot slab. After you have been steamed and washed, you will be taken to a separate area for an oil massage to lock in the moisture.

The result is you feel relaxed, and incredibly clean.

13. Take A Boat Trip From Marmaris

Being a coastal destination, most of the attractions in Marmaris revolve around being on the water. A stroll along the promenade in the evening will show you just how many boat trips and excursions you can take – the choices can be overwhelming.

One of the most popular boat trips you can take is on the huge galleon pirate ships, in which 100+ people all gather on the huge boats and sail around the coves, beaches and islands.

We personally find these ships overwhelming, but some people really enjoy the lively atmosphere. They are known to play really loud music, encourage excessive drinking with an open bar, and are filled with people from all over the world, so you can meet with other travelers and share in the good times.

There are several companies offering boat trips, but they all visit the same destinations, usually secluded beaches and coves where you can go snorkeling and sun bathing on the beach.

The boat trips from Marmaris are a full day activity and include lunch (often a BBQ), and usually have a bar where you can buy soft drinks or alcoholic drinks.

They also include hotel pick up and drop off.

14. Take A Day Trip To Pamukkale

Another day trip you can take, and quite possibly the furthest day trip we would recommend, is to Pamukkale. This natural wonder, also known as Cotton Castle, is a unique phenomenon formed by mineral waters cascading over the white terraces.

The white terraces, complete with several bathing pools, have been a tourist attraction for centuries. Legend has it that people traveling the old Silk Road through the ancient city of Hierapolis(located at the top of the hill), used to bath in these mineral rich waters as they believed them to have healing properties.

Today you can still swim in the pools, as well as check out the ancient ruins of Hierapolis and its grand amphitheatre.

Pamukkale is located 203km away from Marmaris and takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to drive. We highly recommend you visit Pamukkale by day tour or hire a car and drive yourself, as it won’t be possible to visit for a day using public transport.

15. Head Over to Oludeniz & The Blue Lagoon

If you’re thinking the beaches in Marmaris aren’t really living up to your expectations, then I recommend you drive over to Oludeniz to see the world-famous Blue Lagoon .

This lagoon is famous for its bright, turquoise waters and picturesque scenery, backed by the Babadağ mountain which is known as being one of the highest paragliding jump points in the world.

The beach is a protected nature reserve and since it’s protected by a bay, the waters are calm and gentle, perfect for young kids to go swimming in or to explore on a peddle boat.

Though it’s a 139.9 km journey and takes about 2.5 hours to drive, it’s worth the effort. It’s one of the most photographed scenes in Turkey and features on the postcards you find in souvenir stores.

The population normally sits at around 40.000 but during the summer season, can rise to 400.000 people.

The Marmaris peninsula is dotted with magnificent landmarks , from ancient battle sites to uninhabited islands open for tourism and waters home to many sea life unique to this part of the world. But the city center is where most of the attraction lies for many holidayers.

An abundance of world-famous restaurants, hotels, pubs, clubs, you name it, they can all be found right here in the centre of town. But which ones are the best places you can go to to get the most bang for your buck?

Marmaris is famous for its many restaurants . Whatever you may be craving, chances are Marmaris will have a restaurant serving it. But of course, the most sought-after dishes are the mouth-watering kebabs .

And finally, Suleiman the Magnificent of The Ottoman Empire decided it was time for a quick vacation and took the town for himself, after years of bloody battles, that is.

Today, Marmaris still carries the marks of its long history. Mainly, Marmaris Castle , located in the center of town, serves as an exciting monument and a must-visit museum for travelers. The feeling of standing in the same courtyard as many famous conquerors of the past is an especially cool one for the history buffs. The castle is also quite high, providing a panoramic view of Marmaris for those looking to share a few holiday photos.

Level of Crime

Crime is a big concern among travelers when planning a holiday. In many touristic areas of the world, crime is a serious problem, and let's face it, no one wants to go through an unpleasant situation during a holiday.

Luckily, though, Marmaris has always been essentially crime-free . It is, in fact, one of the safest holiday towns in Turkey. However, one aspect of Marmaris that all visitors should be aware of is the traffic .

During summers, the roads are quite populated , and with the bar street so close by, it is very important to be careful when crossing the road. Be sure to double-check at all times and be especially careful around zebra crossings , as many drivers tend to disregard these in Turkey.

2024 Update: Since the publication of this article, new crime figures have been released, and luckily for both holidayers and locals, the crime rates have decreased to record lows. This is in part related to the municipal government's actions to make sure that Marmaris maintains its positive image for potential visitors, especially following the forest fires.

Precautions Against Covid-19

As of 2024, Covid-19 levels have come close to zero in Turkey, and wearing masks is no longer mandatory. By no means does that mean we are completely in the clear, though. So, the municipal government continues taking precautions against the spreading of the virus.

All establishments have redesigned interior areas to accommodate fewer people at the same time, and deliveries of disinfectants are being carried out regularly. Other than that, the government has also audited all restaurants and takeaways to make sure everyone implements the precautionary measures against Covid-19.

Forest Fires

The nearby forest areas were affected very badly by the fires back in August . Some forest sections around Marmaris have burnt down altogether. This brings out the question of whether fires might break out again this summer.

Fortunately, the government has taken many steps to ensure that the forests around Marmaris will be safe against fires this year . This includes extensive monitoring , stationing fire helicopters in Mugla province, and increasing the number of forest rangers .

Dalaman International Airport is the nearest airport to Marmaris. It is also the first destination in Turkey for most visitors flying here. But it is almost 100 kilometers from the city center, which means you may need to make use of one of the airport transfer services to get to your hotel. Private Transfers

Private transfers are cars or luxury vans that visitors can hire to take them into town. With these, you don't have to worry about anything as they pick you up from the airport and drop you off wherever you choose. They are very convenient and you can find a large number of transfer services both at the airport itself and online.

However, private transfers are quite expensive , with a typical return trip costing anywhere between £40-£60 . If you do decide to book a private transfer, make sure to do so with a reputable firm . The prices may be a bit higher, but you won't have to worry about them arriving late, or in fact, not arriving at all .

Public Transport

There are two airport transfer services at Dalaman provided by the government , Havas and Muttas. These are transfer buses located at the airport exit. They are the most common type of transfer used by tourists and are very cheap, priced at 60 - 85 TRY .

Taxis are arguably the most convenient mode of transfer into Marmaris. They are located at the airport exit and operate at all hours of the day. As of 2024, taxis from Dalaman Airport to Marmaris city center cost around 450 TRY (£20) . Mind you, the TRY price may increase as a result of inflation, but GBP-wise prices tend to remain the same most of the time.

Icmeler is Marmaris' neighbor, located 8 km from the city center. It is also a very popular tourist destination thanks to the many beaches and coves that surround it. The settlement itself is quite small, which means however far your hotel is from the center, chances are you can probably walk there in 15 mins.

Icmeler has many hotels and apart-hotels. Hotel prices here are much lower than those in Marmaris city center because of the extra distance, so if you don't mind taking a quick bus into town now and then, Icmeler will probably be the best option.

Typical rates for decent five-star hotels in Icmeler are around £50 per night (per person) , and you can expect to find apart-hotels for around £20.

Hotels in Armutalan

Armutalan is the smallest of the three, located 1.5 km away from the city center. It's very close to the city center, but when you go there for the first time, it seems like a smaller version of Marmaris , with its own shops, restaurants, bars, etc.

Armutalan is a great choice for those that want a reasonably priced stay and don't mind the walk into the city center. A typical apart-hotel in Armutalan costs around £30 per night .

Long Beach spans almost the whole of Marmaris' shoreline, so it might be a bit hard to browse all the bars and events when you're there. Many of the bars along the beach also offer service to the beach area , where you can choose to escape with friends if the activities prove too much for you. The sunbeds are great to enjoy the summer breeze while listening to the waves or chatting with friends.

Most bars along Long Beach charge around 80 TRY for a single beer , but prices may vary depending on location. Some bars bring out kegs straight from the cellar for large groups which are more economical than ordering separately and make for really fun holiday photos (and no, they don't let you keep the keg).

Icmeler is also a popular drinking destination for tourists, supporting some of Marmaris' most famous bars like Tiki Beach and Scotia. Bars here are much more spacey compared to those in the city and offer a peaceful atmosphere where you can take in all the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Most bars in Icmeler are located on the beach, which is perfectly still in the evenings and creates a romantic feel for those looking for a romantic evening meal. The activities are more oriented towards families as well, ranging from Bingo night to Marmaris trivia quest.

Most bars in Icmeler are more luxurious than the ones in the city center, but prices in Icmeler are generally a bit lower because of the extra distance. So, a drink here costs around 60 - 90 TRY in most of the beachside bars.

Seriously, the back exit of The Grand Bazaar looks like the Grammys. Not for no reason though, as the shops in The Grand Bazaar keep a close eye on the newest releases and get them before everywhere else in Marmaris, so if there is a particular pair of trainers or handbag you're looking for, The Grand Bazaar is your best chance of finding it.

The prices in The Grand Bazaar are higher compared to some of the other shopping centers in Marmaris though. It's hard to give an estimated price of items as these vary greatly depending on the design and the particular store, but you can expect the prices to be around 30% more in general, compared to the rest of Marmaris.

Main Street

Marmaris' main street spans the whole distance from the city center to The Grand Yazici and is home to hundreds of replica stores. These are the most convenient stores for those staying near Long Beach because you'll probably be walking past them anyway when going down to the beach.

Shops on the main street are packed full in the summers because of their convenient location. While these may not be as design-oriented as the shops in The Grand Bazaar, they still have quite a variety of designs of some of the biggest brands.

Prices in the main street are not the cheapest in Marmaris, but they definitely are cheaper than The Grand Bazaar.

Icmeler Main Street

Icmeler's main street is also full of replica stores that offer reasonable prices for visitors. It is almost like a smaller version of The Grand Bazaar. Design-wise, it may not be as comprehensive as the prior, but when it comes to prices, the shops in Icmeler blow the rest out of the water.

The stores in Icmeler usually receive fewer customers , but more and more tourists are beginning to make the extra journey to Icmeler to get the biggest discounts. You can shop here for around 20%-30% less than in the city center. If you're planning to do a lot of shopping, Icmeler is a must-see option. It's also a great chance to explore Icmeler for those staying in the city center, as it also has numerous beaches, restaurants, and pubs.

Marmaris Excursions

Marmaris is famous for the countless number of activities you can take part in during your holidays, whether it be sailing away on a pirate ship, or diving for treasure. There are so many activities you can take part in with the family, as a couple or even on your own!

Some excursions, however, offer incredibly unique experiences like the Semi Submarine, where you can see the bottom of the sea while sitting and drinking a beer! Or, the crazy Davy Jones pirate ship tour, which is perfect for families wanting to give their kids lifelong memories.

There are so many different activities you can do in Marmaris, so it would take hours to explain them all, so below you'll find an overview of some of the most common activities and prices you can expect to pay.

Boat tours are the most common sea activities in Marmaris. During the summer, around 70 cruises sail away from the marina to the many coves and sea caves around Marmaris on a daily basis. Cruise tours in Marmaris range anywhere from small boats with sunbeds at the top to ultra-luxe tour yachts cruising to the crème de la crème of Marmaris coves.

The more economic tours cost around 120 TRY per person, and last around 4-6 hours with one complimentary meal and other food and beverage options once on board. These generally travel to the nearby coves and lagoons of Marmaris which are quite nice but can get very crowded during the summer.

Some of the more expensive options, however, like The Davy Jones, or luxury yacht cruises, travel further to the uninhabited islands around Marmaris and visit the best coves and underwater landmarks such as sunken ships, which you can snorkel down to. These are absolutely stunning and definitely worth the price, as some of them are unique to this part of the world. Typical prices for these high-end cruises are around 250 TRY per person.

Jeep Safari

Jeep safaris are very popular among tourists from other parts of Turkey. These sightseeing tours are extremely fun and give you a great chance to experience the beautiful landscape around Marmaris, as well as take photos at some of the most exhilarating and awe-inspiring vantage points.

The guided tours usually take place in convoys of 3-10 Jeeps and offer many activities on the way to keep you excited, such as water cannon fights. These usually travel to Marmaris National Park, where you can see local wildlife like wild horses and deer. Afterward, they visit some of the vantage points like the Beldibi viewpoint and then return to the city center.

The whole safari is a half-day event and usually takes about 6-8 hours and costs about 250-350 TRY per adult. Price rates for children are usually much lower.

Quad Safari

Now that's what I'm talking about! If you're interested in adrenaline-filled, fast-paced, and dangerous activities, the quad safaris are for you. Who wouldn't want to commandeer a kick-ass quad bike through some of the best waterfalls, mud baths, and other points of interest around Marmaris?

Quad safaris take place daily during the summers and travel around some of the nearby landmarks like the Turgut waterfalls. These are a series of waterfalls you may pass through while on safari, and most tours also have their lunch break here so you can dive into the pools at the bottom of the waterfalls. Keep in mind, however, that these pools of water are incredibly cold.

Quad safaris usually take around 6 hours, and typical rates for adults are around 300 TRY.

Rent a Quad!

Most holidayers wanting to travel around in Marmaris hop on a taxi or a minibus. But not you. You know how to travel around with style!

Quad bikes are a popular mode of transport in Marmaris, and chances are you'll be seeing quite a few during your stay. With a quad bike, you have the freedom to explore the vastly underrated attractions dotted around Marmaris without having to bear the responsibility and extra cost of renting a car.

Quad bikes are affordable, hassle-free, and very easy to commandeer. Don't forget to drive on the right side, however, and under no circumstances should you drive these around when intoxicated. Marmaris police are not lenient at all when it comes to drink driving.

You'll find the best prices for quad bikes in Icmeler or Armutalan, but if the distance is an issue and you don't mind paying a little extra, you can get your hands on one of these bad boys in Long Beach for around £20 a day.

Pharmacies in Marmaris

It is very easy to find pharmacies in Marmaris' city center. There are a large number of these dotted around the main hotspots and you can identify them by the big plus sign displayed outside. You can purchase over-the-counter medicines, and if you use prescription medicines, you can purchase these without issue if you can show some sort of document like a prior prescription.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that pharmacies in Marmaris are all closed in the evening, except for some pre-determined pharmacies in the city center that have permission from the municipality to stay open in the evenings and at night to accommodate for any emergency medication needs people may have.

These pharmacies rotate daily, though, so it would be wise to get a hold of these timetables just in case. Most pharmacies in the city center will have these timetables on hand.

Hospitals in Marmaris

The city center houses many hospitals you can make use of if ever in need of some help. Among these, there are some of the more famous ones, like The Yucelen Hospital or Ahu Hospital. Does anybody have the tourist police phone number in Marmaris as we like to have it just in case of emergencies. We usually travel to Egypt and have that number but thankfully never needed it. Thanks in advance for any help.😀😀

Marmaris is mostly known for its all-inclusive resort holidays, which fully focus on sun and sand. Beyond the beach, though, there are plenty of other things to do around this bustling vacation town.

Stunning Marmaris Bay sits just where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet and is speckled with islands and rimmed by dramatically rugged peninsulas. This makes Marmaris a popular base for yachting trips along the coast.

Back on land, the classical-era ruins of Kaunos and Knidos, the Greek island of Rhodes, and many smaller historic sites, are all within easy day tripping distance from town.

This makes it easy for summer sunseekers to mix some sightseeing into their beach vacations.

Marmaris made its tourism name due to its prime coastal position, fronting a beautiful harbor. Unsurprisingly then, the most popular way to experience the lush coastline scenery of Marmaris Bay is to take to the water.

There are plentiful boat tours to choose. With only a short time in town, one-day group tours aboard large boats cruise around the islands of Marmaris Bay, anchoring along the coast for swimming stops.

For many vacationers, though, Marmaris is purely a jumping-off point for a multi-day sailing trip on a gület (Turkish wooden yacht). '

Throughout summer, sailing trips cast off from Marmaris harbor, heading east along the densely forested coast to Fethiye or Göcek or alternatively to sail around Greece's Dodecanese islands.

While experienced sailors can hire yachts for these trips, the more typical option is to book and then hop aboard a fully-crewed vessel where your only responsibility is soaking up the sun and sea. This means Marmaris' yachting trips are suitable for completely unexperienced seafarers.

The tours typically set off either early afternoon, including lunch, or to see sunset, including dinner. The sunset tour option is the most popular, particularly if you want to take stunning photos of Marmaris from the water. Tours typically take three hours, including a 30-minute swim stop at one of Marmaris Harbor's hidden bays.

Marmaris may be a fully fledged resort town but it also has history to explore. Even if you've dedicated your vacation to lying on the beach, or you're only in town for one night before setting sail, make sure to visit Marmaris' bijou old town area.

Lording it up over the harbor, Marmaris Castle and the surrounding cobblestone lanes of the old town are the town's major historic tourist attractions.

The castle was used as the staging ground for Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent's Ottoman troops, when they recaptured the island of Rhodes.

Today, some of the halls are used to display artifacts unearthed in the local region, while the ramparts offer sweeping vistas across the bay.

The route up to the castle is through the old town's narrow cobblestone lanes, rimmed by whitewashed cottages with bougainvillea spilling over the walls. This tiny area is a tranquil respite from the bustle of the harbor, just steps away.

The Greek island of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, is only a one hour journey away on the daily (April to October) catamaran ferry service.

Being so close, one-day return transport tickets make this Greek island one of the most popular places to visit while staying in Marmaris.

With just one day, concentrate your sightseeing in Rhodes Town, where all the main tourist attractions are concentrated within easy walking distance of the port where you disembark.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed walled old town is the main focus, with its cobblestone alleys and its golden-toned stone ramparts leading to the dramatic Palace of the Grand Masters.

The best beaches in the Marmaris area are all out of town, speckled along the hilly, pine-forest-clad coastline.

Both Turunç Beach (20 kilometers southwest from Marmaris) and Içmeler Beach (10 kilometers southwest from Marmaris) have narrow, sandy strips that trail along sheltered bays. Thanks to the shallow shoreline, both offer safe swimming for little ones, making them great beach choices for families.

The beach areas offer full facilities for easygoing days of sun and sand. There are plenty of sun lounges with shades for rent, and restaurants and cafés line the shore.

Be aware, though, that both these beaches are extremely popular during the prime summer months of July and August. Beach space can be a bit of a squeeze.

The quickest way to access both beaches from Marmaris town is by water-taxis, which shuttle between Marmaris harbor and the beaches regularly throughout the day during the summer months. Otherwise, there are regular minibuses that putter between the beaches and the city.

The small town of Dalyan is 90 kilometers east by road from Marmaris. Riverboat cruises, along the winding Dalyan River, which rims the town, are the top activity while here.

The scenery along the river is dramatic, with the high cliff banks bearing ornate tomb facades cut into the rock. The tombs date from between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.

Boats either head downriver to Iztuzu Beach and out along the coastline or, for a longer tour, putter upriver to Köyceğiz Lake. The lake tours include a stop at the Sultaniye hot springs, where you can slather yourself with mineral-rich hot mud.

Plenty of tour operators in Marmaris offer Dalyan day trips (usually booked through your hotel), which include return transport to Dalyan, lunch, and the river cruise as the main activity of the tour.

For a highly scenic road trip, hire a car for a day to drive Turkey's Datça and Bozburun Peninsulas. Marmaris sits just east from these two peninsulas and is the perfect springboard to discover the rugged coastline scenery they both offer.

It's a 99-kilometer drive right to the tip of the Datça Peninsula, where the ruins of Knidos sit.

Along the way, stop off to explore the little village of Eski Datça, with its traditional whitewashed fishing houses and cobblestone lanes. A swim-stop at Kumluk Beach in Datça town is also a refreshing break on a hot, summer day.

The ruins of Ancient Knidos ramble along the peninsula point, sitting between olive groves and forested hills. The main focus is the Hellenistic theater , which fronts the shore, overlooking the sea. The site's other major monument is its Hellenistic temple.

The coastal views along the twisty section of road between Datça town and Knidos is enough of a reason to visit.

Bozburun Peninsula, just to the south, has snoozy villages, dramatically scenic coastline views, and more beaches for swim stops.

The mighty ruins of Ancient Kaunos lie on the opposite shore of the Dalyan River from Dalyan town (88 kilometers east if driving from Marmaris).

Once a major center of Carian culture, Kaunos dates back to 9th century BC, but its heyday began around 400 BC, when its position on the border area between Ancient Lycia and Ancient Caria caused it to bloom into an important seaport and trading center.

The silting up of its ports led to the city's decline in importance, though the site was not fully abandoned until the 15th century.

There are excellent views over the surrounding countryside from the hilltop site. The remnants are scattered along the hill slope and include a large Roman baths area, a theater, a port agora, and the ruins of an acropolis.

Most Dalyan tours from Marmaris focus more on the river pursuits rather than the ruins of Kaunos, so if you want time to explore the ruins, this is best done by hiring a car and heading there independently.

If you arrive early in the morning, you can often get the entire site to yourself.

Protected as part of a nature park, Iztuzu Beach (95 kilometers southeast if driving from Marmaris) is one of Turkey's most famous strips of shore, with its white sand stretching for just under five kilometers.

Unlike many of the beaches in the Marmaris area, the nature park status means there's no major development here, which gives the shore a tranquil, natural feel.

As well as being a beautiful spot for a lazy day of simply swimming and sunbathing, the beach's fame comes from its protected status as a major nesting site for loggerhead turtles. Sections of the beach are out of bounds to sunbathers to help protect the turtle nests.

From Marmaris, plenty of tours head here for a day trip focused purely on beach time. Other trips offer a short stay on the beach before heading up the Dalyan River on a river cruise boat.

On the beach itself, one café offers refreshments and dining, and sun lounges and shades are available to rent.

Marmaris National Park covers most of the rocky, forested coastline that rims the blue waters of Marmaris Bay, stretching eastwards from the bustle of Marmaris town.

Many travelers opt to see this stretch of coast from aboard a yacht on a tour, but you can discover more of this area by heading into the park itself, inland. Jeep tours, ATV tours, and horse riding can all be arranged.

The forest here is mostly red pine, oak, and plane trees. A variety of wildlife live within the park, though the mammal you're most likely to see are wild goats. Bird-watchers should keep their eyes peeled for falcons and eagles.

The most popular destination in the park is Yildiz Adası (Yildiz Island; more often referred to as Paradise Island by tour operators). Despite the name, it's not actually not an island but rather a large peninsula that juts out prominently into Marmaris Bay.

As well as its yacht marina and some resorts in the tiny settlement of Adakoy, Yildiz Adası offers plenty of panoramic vistas. Hike uphill on the rough trail from the village for swooping views across the bay.

A little farther inland are the Nimara Caves, where archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation dating back 12,000 years.

Sedir Island (sometimes referred to as Cleopatra Island) sits in Gökova Bay, just offshore from Çamlı, 23 kilometers north from Marmaris. During summer, regular ferries shuttle between Camlı on the facing shore and the island throughout the day.

Most people are here to spend time on Cleopatra Beach, where the sand laps shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water. Sedir Island, though, is also home to the ruins of the ancient site of Kedrai, a Carian city that later came under control of Rhodes as part of the Rhodian Peraia.

If you're keen on walking and history, there's plenty to explore away from the beach, including a theater with sea views, an agora, two churches from the later Byzantine era, and some remnants of city walls.

The remains of the Sanctuary of Apollo temple at the island's eastern end are the largest section of ruin, so head here first if you're short on time.

There are around 50 dive sites accessible from Marmaris though, obviously, diving here in the Aegean Sea is not going to offer colorful coral reefs and tropical fish.

The most interesting sites here instead offer an opportunity to dive amid classical-era ruins. On all dives there's a good chance of seeing the area's protected loggerhead turtles.

Galleon Cove is one of the best dive sites for underwater photography with the rocky seabed festooned with amphorae, and the ruins of a Hellenistic-age ship that sunk here. It's one of the farthest dive sites from Marmaris, so it usually has to be specially requested by divers.

Aksu Cove sits just off Yildiz Adası (sometimes called Paradise Island) in Marmaris Bay, so it is a popular dive site. There are plenty of amphorae dating from the Byzantine era in this area.

Ince Cape, also near Yildiz Adası, is often visited by divers chiefly for the underwater topography and the variety of sponges and fish in the area.

The hilltop ruins of the theater of Amos overlook tiny Amos village and its beach, just four kilometers south of Turunç and 24 kilometers south of Marmaris.

The theater is the only major monument left from the site of Ancient Amos, which was once part of the Rhodian Peraia group of settlements (under the control of Rhodes) in the classical era.

The theater originally seated 1,300 spectators. Today, a partial section of the seating, as well as most of the orchestra below, has been preserved. The ruins sit surrounded by pine trees, and the site commands excellent views across Marmaris Bay, which are worth the short hike alone.

Transportation in Marmaris

The easiest way of getting around is using the dolmus minibus service. Dolmus buses in Marmaris are color-coded . The buses running within Marmaris have a green band across them, while the buses running between Marmaris and Icmeler have orange bands.

Tourist scam alert: Miami Beach police nab alleged serial fraudster targeting vacationers

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Under the glittering allure of Miami Beach’s shores, an unsuspecting tourist found herself ensnared in a web of deceit spun by a fraudster earlier this year, according to police.

While sitting near the 700 block of Miami Beach around 5 p.m. Jan 15, police said the victim was reading her book, at which time James Jayson Plitsas, 25, of Miami, and an unidentified male approached her, claiming to be club promoters who could grant her entry into any nightclub in the area.

Following a brief conversation, Plitsas asked the victim for her cellphone under the guise of adding his Instagram page to her account to send nightclub flyers, according to an arrest report.

The victim willingly handed over her unlocked cellphone for this sole purpose. However, during this exchange, Plitsas and his accomplice continued to engage with her while his accomplice took possession of the victim’s phone to add his Instagram page as well, the report stated.

After a short period, police said the victim became suspicious that both individuals were attempting to distract her while Plitsas’ accomplice still had possession of her phone.

After being asked about the phone, the accomplice claimed he was simply following people and returned the phone to her after a minute before promptly leaving the area, the report stated.

Police said the victim checked her email and discovered a notification from her bank indicating that a new payee had been added to her Zelle via her Chase account a minute earlier. Suspecting unauthorized access, she contacted her bank, which later confirmed someone had gained access to her Chase Bank application and changed the password, subsequently conducting a $1,500 Zelle transfer.

Miami Beach detectives later identified Plitsas as the suspect, according to the report.

Police said a photographic lineup was also presented to the victim by detectives on March 28, and she identified Plitsas as one of the subjects involved.

Further investigations revealed that Plitsas had been previously arrested for two similar crimes in Miami Beach, where police say he targeted unsuspecting victims on the beach, posing as a club promoter and conducting unauthorized financial transactions through victim’s cellphones, resulting in financial losses of $1,500 and $3,500.

Investigators confirmed all victims in these cases were tourists visiting Miami Beach.

Jail records show Plitsas is facing one count each of organized scheme to defraud and third-degree grand theft.

As of Friday, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond has not been determined due to a Nebbia hold for a previous charge.
